1999 TOYOTA CAMRY - FOR NO APPARENT REASON STARTED ON FIRE AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY - PEDAL FELT LIKE IT COLLASPED AND FIRE APPEARED INSTANTLY GIVING SMOKE STRAIGHT AT DRIVER & PASSENGERS BARELY MAKING THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY BEFORE COMPLETELY TOTALLING CAR
WHILE DRIVING AT 45MPH AND WITH NO WARNING CONSUMER COULD HEAR A LOUD NOISES COMING FROM ENGINE. THEN VEHICLE SHUT OFF, CAUSING CONSUMER TO PULL OVER. DEALER NOTIFIED.*AK
CONSUMER STARTED VEHICLE AND STARTER GOT "STUCK". TURNED IGNITION TO OFF POSITION AND REMOVED KEY, BUT STARTER CONTINUED TO TURN ENGINE. VEHICLE THAN BEGAN TO SMOKE, AND ALMOST CAUGHT FIRE. CONSUMER HAD TO DISCONNECT BATTERY TO STOP STARTER FROM TURNING.*AK
AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHES ON/OFF ACKNOWLEDGING AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY. *AK THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHES ON/OFF DUE TO CENTER SENSOR FAILURE. *YH
DEALERSHIP SAYS THE WATER FROM THE STOPPED UP A/C DRAIN CAUSED THE ELECTRICAL SHORT AND IT WILL COST ALMOST $800.00 TO REPAIR. I DO NOT HAVE $800.00. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THE AIRBAG COULD POSSIBLY DEPLOY WITHOUT NOTICE AND THAT PUTS EVERYONE AT RISK WHEN DRIVING OR RIDING IN THE CAR. IT DOES NOT HAVE AN ON/OFF SWITCH AND THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT DEACTIVATE THE AIR BAG. I TRANSPORT CHILDREN IN MY VEHICLE AND I AM VERY WORRIED ABOUT THEM AND ANYONE ELSE INCLUDING MYSELF RIDING IN THE CAR. PLEASE ADVISE.*AK
THIS IS THE SECOND POWER STEERING PUMP THAT HAS FAILED ON MY TOYOTA CAMRY WHICH WAS PURCHASED NEW.THE FIRST PUMP FAILED AT 7,800 MILES AND NOW THE FRONT SEAL IS LEAKING ON THE REPLACEMENT PUMP AT 76,243 MILES. THIS IS UNACCEPTBLE. *AK

WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED, JUMPING THE CURB AND CRASHING INTO A BUILDING.*AK
ADDITIONAL INFO TO ODI NUMBER 765034 - SHOP MENTIONED THAT THE WATER PUMP DAMAGED CAUSED SCRAPPING ON THE ENGINE BLOCK. SINCE THE ENGINE BLOCK IS MADE OF AN ALUMINUM BASE HIS CONCERN WAS THAT THE MARKS MIGHT CAUSE A CRACK TO OCCUR. HE SAID NO LEAKING WAS SEEN AT THIS TIME BUT I WANT TO PUT ON RECORD THAT DAMAGE WAS MADE TO THE ENGINE THAT MIGHT CAUSE PROBLEMS IN THE FURTURE. THIS SCRAPING WAS DUE TO THE WATER PUMP FAILURE THAT WAS NOTED IN THE ODI NUMBER 765034 QUESTIONNAIRE. THIS INFO WAS ALSO MENTIONED TO TOYOTA IN A CERTIFIED LETTER BUT I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RESPONSE YET FROM TOYOTA.
ON 9/8/2001 I HAD THE 30,000 MILE MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON MY 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. ON JULY 7,2002, THE WATER PUMP FAILED AND DAMAGED THE TIMING BELT. I HAD TO REPLACE THE WATER PUMP, TIMING(CAMSHAFT BELT) , SEVERAL ADDITIONAL BELTS, IDLER , TENSIONER AND ANTI-FREEZE. LABOR AND PARTS TOTALED $710.44. THIS IS THE 5TH OCCURANCE OF A WATER PUMP FAILING ON A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH UNDER 45,000 MILES THAT WAS REPORTED ON THIS WEB SITE ALONE. THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY COVERS THE WATER PUMP FOR 60 MONTHS OR 60,000 MILES. I HAVE SENT A CERTIFIED LETTER TO TOYOTA , WHICH THEY HAVE RECEIVED BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM THEM. THE WATER PUMP SHOULD LAST MORE THAT 45,000 MILE AND WITH THE NUMBER OF FAILURES THAT HAVE OCCURED, THERE IS A TREND THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS PART.*AKI

THE STANDARD TOYOTA WATER PUMP IS WARRANTED FOR 60 MONTHS OR 60,000 MILES. SINCE MY CAR IS ONLY 40 MONTHS OLD AND HAS ONLY 41,562 MILES, IT FALLS WELL WITHIN THE COVERAGE I HAVE CHECKED THE INTERNET PAGE FOR THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION WEB PAGE( WWW.NHTSA.DOT.GOV) AND FOR THIS YEAR AND MODEL. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF THIS SAME EVENT OCCURRING. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA CASE # 200208090013. I HAVE CONTACTED THE CUSTOMER CENTER ABOUT 15 TIMES TO SUPPLY ALL THE NECESSARY PAPERWORK AND SUPPORT DOCUMENTS THEY REQUESTED , BUT THEY REFUSE TO DOCUMENT WHY THE CASE WAS DENIED. TURN SIGNAL BLINKS VERY RAPIDLY WHEN HEADLIGHTS ARE TURNED ON. SPEED RETURNS TO NORMAL WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURN. SIGNALS OPERATE NORMALLY WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ARE OFF. I'VE NOTICED THIS ON MY FATHER'S 1998 CAMRY AND ON ANOTHER DRIVER'S CAMRY (1998-2001 MODEL?- SAME BODY STYLE AS MINE). IT APPEARS THAT A GOOD PORTION OF CAMRY AND SOLARA (BOTH CARS SHARE SAME PLATFORM) OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING A CLUNKING NOISE THAT OCCURS IN THE FRONT. WHAT DOES IT TAKE FOR NHTSA TO EXTEND THE POWER OF CONSUMERS TO GET TOYOTA TO ADMIT TO ITS FAULT, AND TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY? TSB#: SU00299 TSB#: 012199 TSB#: SU00100 GIVEN THAT THE MASSIVE AMOUNT OF 1997-2001 CAMRY'S SOLD, I AM CONFIDENT THAT THERE ARE MANY FRUSTRATED OWNERS WHO WISH TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED AT THE EXPENSE OF TOYOTA MOTOR SALES. SOME OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM EARLY, WITHIN THE 3YR/36K MI. WARRANTY PERIOD, WHILE OTHERS ARE LEFT IN THE COLD TO PAY ABOUT $300 TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. CONSIDERING THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT AND NOT PRIMARILY WEAR AND TEAR, I BELIEVE TOYOTA MOTORS CORPORATION HAS THE OBLIGATION TO EXTEND ITS WARRANTY TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES CAN THE NHTSA DO TO PROTECT CONSUMERS AGAINST DESIGN FLAWS AND DEFECTS SUCH AS THIS ONE? *NLM
THE ENGINE HAS BEEN EMITTING A STRONG BURNING SMELL FOR ALMOST A MONTH. AFTER DRIVING, A HAVE A HEADACHE AND FEEL DIZZY FOR SEVERAL HOURS. MY WIFE REFUSES TO DRIVE THE CAR. TWO WEEKS AGO, THE DEALER CLAIMS HE REMOVED A PLASTIC BAG FROM THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, BUT THE SMELL CONTINUES WITH THE SAME INTENSITY. THE SMELL EXISTS IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT WHILE DRIVING AND STANDING IN SEVERAL PLACES AT THE FRONT HOOD WITH THE IGNITION TURNED OFF. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AGAIN YESTERDAY; THEY CLAIM PLASTIC IS STILL BURNING ITS WAY THROUGH THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. NOT ACCEPTABLE.*AK
CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN ON A GRAVEL ROAD. THE INSIDE OF THE CAR FILLED WITH SMOKE RAPIDLY AND WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS INDICATION OF PROBLEM OR WARNING. ALL GAUGES REGISTERED NORMAL. DRIVER EXITED THE CAR AND SAW FIREBALLS FALLING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE CAR WAS TOTALLY BURNED AND WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THE MAIN POINT IS THAT THERE WAS NO PREVIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR AND IT HAD BEEN MAINTAINED PER THE MANUFACTURERS SPECS. WE ARE NOT SURE OF WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE, BUT HAD TO BE RELATED TO FUEL SINCE IT BURNED SO FAST. *AK
WHILE TRAVELING AT 45 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE TRAVELING IN FRONT OF CONSUMER'S VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOPPED. CONSUMER REAR ENDED OTHER VEHICLE. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH CONSUMER'S VEHICLE RAN INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT HEAD-ON. UPON IMPACT, NONE OF FRONTAL AIR BAGS DEPLOYED.
DURING AN ACCIDENT, AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY RESULTING IN HEAD AND FACIAL INJURIES TO THE DRIVER, THE VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. NLM
MCPHERSON STRUT UPPER BUSHING IS LOOSE AND MAKES LOUD SOUNDS WHEN GOING OVER MOST BUMPS. APPEARS THE UPPER MOUNT OPENING IS TOO LARGE AND ALLOWS THE STRUT TO MOVE AROUND. DEALER QUOTES $585.00 TO REPLACE BOTH FRONT STRUTS. THIS SEEMS A DEFECT AND NOT NORMAL WEAR.*AK
I BOUGHT THIS CAR AS A USED "PROGRAMED CAR" IN FEBRUARY, 2000. IT HAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS DRIVEN JUST FINE UP UNTIL FEBRUARY 24, 2002. IT ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTED TO HAVE CLEAR LIQUID LIKE SMOKE EMIT FROM THE REAR EXHAUST PIPE. I HAD JUST FILLED THE CAR UP WITH GAS. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC THE NEXT DAY. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT I HAD A "BLOWN HEAD GASKET". THIS IS VERY, VERY UNUSUAL FOR TOYOTAS. I HAVE OWNED TOYOTAS FOR OVER 16 YEARS NOW, AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS TYPE OF A PROBLEM IN A NEW CAR. AFTER MY MECHANIC HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO OVER THE CAR, HE CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS INDEED THE "HEAD GASKET". I ASKED HIM WHAT WOULD CAUSE A "HEAD GASKET" TO GO OUT ON A FAIRLY NEW TOYOTA? I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY PROMPT WITH MY GENERAL UPKEEP ON MY CARS, REGULAR OIL CHANGES, TIRE ROTATIONS, AND OTHER NECESSARY FILTER CHANGES. MY MECHANIC SAID, IT'S A GOOD POSIBILITY THAT THE HEAD GASKET COULD HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE. HE ASKED ME TO CHECK WITH SOMEONE TO SEE IF THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON ANY 1999 TOYOTA CAMARYS. IS THIS THE TYPE OF INFORMATION THAT I CAN GET FROM YOU, OR DO I NEED TO CONTACT THE CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS FOR TOYOTA? PLEASE CALL OR E-MAIL ME YOU RESPONSE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. PREMATURE DISC PAD FAILURE- LEFT PADS 0% , RIGHT SIDE PADS HAD 60% REMAINING. COMPLAINED TO DEALER AT 11K MILES THAT BRAKE LIGHT WAS ON. THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME FOR BRAKE SERVICE THAT THEY SAID WAS DUE AT 7,500 MILES AND WOULD NOT ADD FLUID WITHOUT CHARGING. I REFUSED IT AS BEING QUITE PREPOSTEROUS! REPAIR COST ME $75. *AK
WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, VEHICLE STALLED. STOPPED VEHICLE AND GOT OUT, AND VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. DEALER CONTACTED.*AK *JB

IN A FRONTAL COLLISION AT 15-20 MPH AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, CAUSING INJURIES TO DRIVER AND PASSENGER. DEALER HAS INSPECTED VEHICLE AND WILL REPAIR IT. *AK *JB
EVAPORATIVE CONTROL SYSTEM: VEHICLE PURCHASED NEW. AT 43,219 MJILES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. DEALER TEST FORUND DEFECTIVE VACUME CONTRO VALVE. DEALER REPLACED AT A COST TO ME OF $85.98. AT 49,597 MILES ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. DEALER TEST REVELED LEAKING CHARCOAL CANISTER. DEALER ADVISED REPLACEMENT WOULD COST $438.54. DEALER INDICATED PART WAS NOT A WARRANTY ITEM.
HAD I NOT GOTTEN MY FAMILY OUT OF THE CAR PROMTLY AND TAKEN ALL APPROPRIATE ACTIONS, THE RESULTS OF THE FIRE COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. FIRE INVESTIGATOR STATED OIL DRIPPED ONTO EXAHUST MANIFOLD AFTER EXPLOSION CAUSING FIRE. I WONDER, COULD A DRIP SHIELD HAVE PREVENT THE FIRE? I WAS FEATHERING THE ACCELERATOR WHEN THE ENGINE BLEW-UP. COULD THE COMBINATION OF FEATHERING AND HIGHER SPEED HAVE CAUSED AN CONTROL SITUATION THAT CAUSED THE EXPLOSION? IT LOOKS LIKE THE PART FAILED IN A ROTATING PART OF THE ENGINE. WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE PART FAILED IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION; WOULD THER HAVE BEEN ANY RISK TO PASSENGERS OR PEDESTRIANS?*AK
AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS VEHICLE STALLED OUT AND DIED WITHOUT WARNING. AFTER INSPECTION OF VEHICLE MECHANIC DISCOVERED THAT ENGINE LOCKED UP DUE TO LACK OF LUBRICATION.*AK
ALL 4 STRUTS ARE LEAKING AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. DEALER'S ESTIMATED COST IS $1700.00. THE CAR HAS 56K MILES (80% FREEWAY)
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A RIGHT SIDE FRONTAL COLLISION , SPEED WAS NOT DETERMINED. UPON IMPACT, FRONTAL AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
RE: STRUTS 3 SERVICE CENTERS, INCLUDING ANTWERPEN, CHECKED. ALL 3 AGREE ON RR STRUT AND MOUNT. THE OTHER TWO ADDED THAT THE OTHER STRUTS WERE LEAKING. ANTWERPEN SAYS THAT'S "NORMAL" FOR TOYOTA. HOWEVER, A CHECK AT THE SERVICE CENTER OF 2 OTHER TOYOTA'S REVEALED NO LEAKS. AFTER CUSTOMER CALLED A "WISE ASS" BY TOYOTA REP, EFFORTS TO SPEAK TO MANAGERS REVEALED THEM UNAVAILABLE FOR THE ENTIRE DAY (THIS AT 8:30 A.M.) RE: POWER WINDOW. WHEN IT WAS FIRST REPORTED, THE WINDOW BECAME OPERABLE BEFORE I COULD GET IT INTO THE SHOP. IN AUG. 2002 I KEPT THE MOTOR RUNNING AND DROVE DIRECTLY THERE. ANTWERPEN SAID IT WAS THE POWER MOTOR AND THAT THEY WOULD ORDER THE PART. ALTHOUGH I HAVE CALLED SEVRERAL TIMES AND MENTIONED IT AGAIN DURING THIS INCIDENT, THAT HAS NOT YET "COME IN" FROM TOYOTA IT'S NOW 4 MONTHS LATER. DT
ABS BRAKING SYSTEM ENGAGE IMMEDIATELY UPON BRAKING WITH NO IMPENDING SKID RESULTING IN INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCE AND DOG BEING STRUCK. PAVEMENT WAS DRY AND I COULD HAVE AVOIDED THE ACCIDENT IF THE CAR DID NOT HAVE OVERLY SENSITIVE ABS BRAKES. I COMPAINED TO THE SELLING DEALER ABOUT THIS WHEN THE CAR WAS NEW AND WAS TOLD THIS IS NORMAL AND NOT A PROBLEM. THE ABS HAS ACTIVATED ON SEVERAL OTHER OCCASIONS WHEN IT SHOULDN'T HAVE CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL BUT NO ACCIDENT. ABS SHOULD BE REPROGRAMMED TO ONLY ACTIVATE WHEN THERE IS AN IMPENDING WHEEL LOCKUP. *AK

CONSUMER HAS CONCERNS WITH THE DESIGN OF THE AIR CONDITION CONTROL SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHING FROM OUTSIDE AIR TO RECIRCULATED WITH OUT ANY INTENDED ACTION, IN THE RECIRCULATED MODE THE MOISTURE CONTENT SEEMS TO INCREASE RAPIDLY CAUSING UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS. *JG

ON 2 SEPARATE DAYS, THE BRAKES HAVE SEMI-FAILED, IE., WHEN DEPRESSED, THEY DID NOT STOP THE CAR IN THE NORMAL DISTANCE, BUT DID EVENTUALLY BRING THE CAR TO A STOP ABOUT 2-3 CARLENGTHS BEYOND EXPECTED STOPPING POINT. NO OTHER FACTORS CONTRIBUTED, IE., PAVEMENT WAS DRY, CIRCUMSTANCES ORDINARY. VERY FRIGHTENING, LUCKY TO HAVE AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT, PARTICULARLY THE SECOND OCCURENCE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC! BETWEEN INCIDENTS, ALL WORKED NORMALLY. HAVE HAD CAR IN TO A DEALER (AFTER SECOND INCIDENT), BRAKES WORKED ON, CERTIFIED AS SAFE. CONCERNED BECAUSE FOUND SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON NHTSA WEBSITE THAT WERE NOT RESOLVED BY DEALER REPAIR! *AK

A CAR IN THE NORTHBOUND LANE CUT ACROSS TRAFFIC INTO OUR SOUTHBOUND LANE AT THAT TIME I HAD NO WHERE TO MOVE SO I APPLIED MY BRAKES HER CAR PROCEEDED TO ACCELERATE TO APPRX 40-45 MPH AND HIT US HEAD ON. WE HAD INJURIES BRUISES, NECK INJURIES AND THE WORST A BROKEN STERNUM. AT KNOW TIME DID OUR AIRBAGS DEPLOY DURING THIS ACCIDENT. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATION AND THEY SAID WE WERE NOT HIT HARD ENOUGH FOR THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY END OF DICUSSION. TOYOTA HAS GIVEN US THE COLD SHOULDER AND MORE OR LESS NOT TO BOTHER THEM ABOUT THIS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW COME IF WE WERE HIT SO HARD THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE POLICE AT THE SCENE ALONG WITH OTHERS WERE ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE AIRBAGS NOT DEPLOYING AND ALSO THEY INFORMED NOT TO GET INTO THE CAR BECAUSE THE AIRBAGS COULD DEPLOY AT ANY TIME.
