2002 TOYOTA CAMRY SE: WHILE CAR WAS BEING BACKED DOWN A DRIVEWAY AT 2-3 MPH WITH DRIVER'S FOOT ON BRAKE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE CAR ACCELERATED SUDDENLY AND UNCONTROLLABLY BACKWARD FOR ABOUT 66 FEET AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THE CAR THEN SOMEHOW SURGED FORWARD FOR ABOUT 132 FEET. CAR WAS TOTALED. UPDATED 7/2/12 *CN UPDATED 07/17/12
WHEN THE BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED 6 TIMES SINCE OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER, WHO COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. *AK *MR SEE VOQ 10063541. *DSY
BACKING CAR OUT OF DRIVEWAY IN APPROXIMATELY. 6 INCHES OF SNOW (HAD BEEN PARKED NIGHT BEFORE AFTER 1-2 INCHES HAD FALLEN). ROCK GUARD CAUGHT SNOW (GAVE NO FEELING OF RESISTANCE) AND RIPPED OFF, ALSO PULLING OFF FRONT BUMPER (MOSTLY DRIVER SIDE) AND DAMAGING DRIVER SIDE HEAD LAMP ASSEMBLY. DEALER CLAIMS THIS IS "NORMAL." HOWEVER, THE MINIMAL SPEED AND FORCE THAT IT TOOK FOR THIS AMOUNT OF DAMAGE MAKES US QUESTION THE INTEGRITY OF THE PARTS USED IN OUR VEHICLE. TOYOTA REFUSES TO INVESTIGATE OR CLAIM ANY RESPONSIBILITY, AND REFUSES TO GIVE OUT ANY INFORMATION ON HOW TO REACH A FACTORY REP. OTHER THAT TELLING US THEY WILL "RELAY THE COMPLAINT" TO THE FACTORY REP. AND HAVE HER CALL US "WHENEVER SHE WILL BE IN TOWN." THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY BEEN OWNED FOR 8 1/2 MONTHS AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. IT HAD NO PROBLEMS DRIVING FORWARD IN SNOW CONDITIONS. WE WERE TOLD DUE TO THE BUILD OF THE VEHICLE TO WITHSTAND FRONT END COLLISIONS, THAT IT MAKES THE CAR VULNERABLE TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES WE HAVE EXPERIENCED, HOWEVER, WE WERE NOT GIVEN THIS INFORMATION PRIOR TO PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. WE HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE IN EXACTLY THE SAME OR WORSE CONDITIONS IN THE PAST. WE ARE NOW BEING HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR OVER $1400 IN DAMAGES. WE FEEL THAT THERE IS FAULTY MANUFACTURING INVOLVED AND WOULD LIKE THIS INVESTIGATED. WE ALSO WANT TOYOTA TO OWN UP TO SOME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR PRODUCT MANUFACTURING. *JB
ON FOUR OCCASIONS WHEN THE GEAR SHIFT WAS IN DRIVE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. ON ONE OCCASION VEHICLE WAS PUT IN DRIVE AND IT SURGED FORWARD AND COLLIDED WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. DEALER EXAMINED VEHICLE, BUT COULD NOT FIND THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE TIRES CONTAINED BUBBLES . IT WAS LATER TAKEN TO THE HUDIBURG TOYOTA. THEY REMOVED THE TIRE AND PERFORMED AN INSPECTION, THE DEALER STATED THE DEFECT WAS CAUSED BY ROAD HAZARDS. NEW TIRES WERE PLACED ON THE VEHICLE. *NLM *CB *JB
CAR EMITS AN STRONG ODOR OF ROTTEN EGGS (SULFUR DIOXIDE) THROUGH THE INTERIOR VENT SYSTEM. THIS CONDITION IS DOCUMENTED IN TOYOTA TSB EG003-03 DATED 2/24/03. ALTHOUGH THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THE CONDITION, THEY SAY IT IS THE FAULT OF THE GASOLINE. I HAVE TRIED MANY DIFFERENT BRANDS AND MY NEIGHBORS CARS DO NOT EXHIBIT THIS SMELL. SULFUR DIOXIDE IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS TO PEOPLE WITH RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS SUCH AS MY DAUGHTER WHO HAS ASTHMA. HER CONDITION HAS BECOME WORSE THIS WINTER BECAUSE (WE THINK) OF HER CONTACT WITH THIS CAR. TOYOTA HAS SAID THAT THE CONDITION IS NOT COVERED IN THEIR WARRANTY AND THEY REFUSE TO FIX IT. *NLM
CONSUMER BACKED VEHICLE INTO POLE AND APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS PUT INTO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE THEN WENT INTO EXTENDED ACCELERATION WHICH RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. PLEASE PROVIDE DETAILS. UPDATED 7/2/12 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN SHE PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERESE, SHE HIT A POLE WITH HER REAR BUMPER, SHE THEN PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVER, AND THE ACCELERATOR JAMMED INTO THE ON POSITION, AND THEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATOR OUT OF CONTROL. THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS POOR BRAKING DURING HARD STOP. BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO FLOOR. DURING NORMAL BRAKING, BRAKE PEDAL IS VERY LOW. WHEN YOU PUMP BRAKES, THE BRAKE PEDAL SINKS. THE DEALER HAS CHECKED BRAKES AND SAYS THIS IS NORMAL CONDITION.*JB
SINCE I PURCHASED THIS CAR IT HAS BEEN PROBLEMS, FIRST IT WAS THE BRAKES VIBRATING, TOOK IT IN AND RIGHT AWAY THE DEALER KNEW WHAT IT WAS WITHOUT ME EVEN EXPLAINING IT TO HIM, THEY FIXED THAT IN 2 TRIPS. THEN IT WAS THE ROTTEN EGG SMELL, THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG.(THEN WHY DOES MY CAR STINK WHEN I TRY TO GET POWER OUT OF THE ENGINE?) THEN IT WAS THE KNOCKING AND PINGING IN THE ENGINE, (I WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, BUT MY OCTANE LEVEL WAS LOW TO UPGRADE MY GAS. THE MANUFACTURERS PROVIDED OWNERS MANUAL STATES 87 OCTANE GAS OR HIGHER, I ALREADY USE 89 OCTANE AND HAVE SINCE THE DAY I BOUGHT THE CAR, SO WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO SPEND MONEY ON HIGHER PRICED GAS WHEN THE CAR IS ONLY 1 YEAR OLD AND THE ENGINE SHOULD NOT MAKE ANY NOISES. NOW IT IS THE TIRES AND ALIGNMENT THE ALIGNMENT IS COMPLETELY OFF THAT THE TIRES ARE DESTROYED WITH ONLY 17,250 MILES ON THEM, YET THE CAR SHOWS NO SIGN OF THE ALIGNMENT BEING OFF, IT DRIVES STRAIGHT STAYS IN ONE LANE AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS EVEN STRAIGHT, SO HOW AFTER ONE YEAR WITH LOW MILES IS THE ALIGNMENT OFF AND THE TIRES ARE DESTROYED, AND WHY WAS IT UNNOTICED WHEN I HAD MY TIRES BALANCED AND ROTATED 2 MONTHS EARLIER AT 15,000 MILES? BY THE SAME DEALERSHIP! I FEEL THAT THIS CAR HAS ALOT OF PROBLEMS THAT THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT WANT TO ADDRESS, LOOK AT HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS, AND WE ARE ALL TOLD THAT IT IS WEAR AND TEAR OR THAT THERE IS NO PROBLEM AT ALL, WELL THEN WHY ARE WE ALL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS? I CALLED TOYOTA'S MAIN OFFICE LOGGED A COMPLAINT AND WAS TOLD THAT SOMEONE WOULD GET BACK TO ME, IT HAS BEEN 3 DAYS NOW AND NOT ONE CALL HAS COME MY WAY! I FEEL THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS TO THIS CAR SINCE IT IS A NATION WIDE PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS A $27000.00 CAR THAT HAS DEPRECIATED IN VALUE BY MORE THAN $7000.00 IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR, WHAT HAPPENED TO TOYOTA'S RETAINING THERE VALUE? WHILE DRIVING TO WORK CONSUMER HIT A PATCH OF ICE AND HIT A CAR IN FRONT OF HER. UPON IMPACT, THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. *AK *CB *JB
WHEN TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 50 MPH WHEN YOU LET OFF ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR DOWNSHIFTS OR HESITATES WITH A NOTICIBLE CLUNK. THIS HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE.*AK
WHILE TURNING AND DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS DRIVER HEARD A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT STEERING WHEEL NEEDED LUBRICATION. *AK DEALER LUBRICATED STEERING COLUMN BOOTH ACCORDING TO TSB RELATING TO PROBLEM. CONSUMER FELT THIS IS JUST A TEMPORARY FIX, AND PARTS ARE DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. MANUFACTURE NOTIFIED. *TT
CONSUMER HIT A STOPPED VEHICLE, NONE OF THE VEHICLES AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. AS A RESULT DRIVER WAS INJURED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. PH
THE STANDARD TIRES ON THE 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY SE ARE HORRIBLE ON SNOW. WHENEVER THERE IS ANY SNOW ON THE GROUND, THE CAR HAS ABSOLUTELY NO TRACTION. IT CAN'T EVEN MAKE IT UP MY DRIVEWAY.
WHEN THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED, CONSUMER WOULD ALSO HIT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL.*JB THE CONSUMER'S ACCESS TO THE BRAKE PEDAL IS IMPEDED, OR INHIBITED DURING APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE FOOTWELL AND THE BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT ASSEMBLY.
REGARDING 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY. STARTED EXPERIENCING PULLING AND BUMPING SENSATIONS FROM FRONT SOON AFTER 5000 MILES. HAD TIRES REBALANCED AND ROTATED, PROBLEM CONTINUED. TOOK CAR TO DEALER WHO SAID ALIGNMENT WAS OFF AND SUPPOSEDLY CORRECTED. NO CHANGE, IN FACT, STEERING WHEEL WAS STILL SLIGHTLY OFF CENTER. TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALER WHO SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG BUT DID ANOTHER ALIGNMENT, THIS TIME STRAIGHTENING OUT THE STEERING WHEEL. PROBLEM DID NOT GO AWAY. WE ARE NOW AT 19000 MILES HAVING JUST ROTATED THE TIRES AGAIN IN HOPES IT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM, BUT IT HAS NOT. ADDITIONALLY, WE HAVE RECENTLY NOTICED POOR BRAKING TRACTION EVEN AT SLOW SPEEDS IN WET CONDITIONS AND A SPINNING OUT OF A WHEEL GOING AROUND CORNERS AT SLOW SPEED. WE ARE FRUSTATED BY THE INABILITY OF TOYOTA NORTH OF MT. KISCO, NY TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
I OWN A 2002 CAMRY SE, AND IT CAME ORIGINALLY EQUIPPED WITH BRIDGESTONE TURANZAS ON IT. THESE TIRES ARE WORTHLESS IN THE SNOW AND RAIN. I TOOK MY COMPLAINT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER, AND THEY SAID THAT THE TIRES WERE "PERFORMANCE" TIRES AND ALL THEY COULD DO WAS HELP ME GET A DISCOUNT ON ANOTHER SET OF TIRES. THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, AS THIS TYPE OF (FAMILY) CAR SHOULD NOT HAVE COME EQUIPPED WITH A DANGEROUS TIRE. I COMPLAINED TO THE BRIDGESTONE DEALER AS WELL, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THESE WERE VERY HARD TIRES, AND ARE THE TYPE THAT WOULD NORMALLY BE PUT ON A CORVETTE, OR SIMILAR SPORTS CAR. I WAS FORCED TO REPLACE THE TIRES AT MY EXPENSE, WITH ONLY 21,000 MILES ON THEM. THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP IN THE SNOW, AND WOULD SLIP AT TAKEOFF IN THE RAIN AS WELL. THESE TIRES SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN PUT ON THIS CAR. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT TOYOTA WOULD PUT THIS TYPE OF TIRE ON A CAMRY. *NLM
THE THROTTLE STICKS NEVER HAD IT HAPPEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS YET. LIKE WHEN YOU PULL UP TO A LIGHT TO STOP IT STICKS BUT IF YOU HOLD ON TO THE BRAKE IT GOES DOWN TO NOMAL. SINCE I'VE OWNED THIS CAR IT HAS HAPPENED 5 TIMES. THE LAST TIME AS I WAS PULLING INTO THE DRIVE. HARD TO LAY YOUR HANDS ON TO WHAT TO DO. *NLM
I HAVE A 2002 CAMRY THAT I BOUGHT NEW AT SMITHTOWN TOYOTA AND I EXPERIENCED THE VERY SAME PROBLEM WITH MY BRAKES FROM 'DAY ONE' THAT HAS NOW BEEN IDENTIFIED ON THE PRIUS & LEXUS MODELS. I HAD THE BRAKES CHECKED QUITE A FEW TIMES BY SMITHTOWN TOYOTA & AGAIN BY RIVERHEAD TOYOTA WHEN I MOVED TO THE AREA IN AUGUST 2003 & WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. SINCE I WAS THE ONE DRIVING THE CAR, I THOUGHT THE EXPLANATION WAS A BIT CAVALIER SINCE MY BRAKES CONTINUED TO FAIL ON UNEVEN SURFACES. I WROTE TO THE DEALERSHIP & TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS NUMEROUS TIMES BUT WAS IGNORED (I HAVE COPIES OF MY CORRESPONDENCE). AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, I HAVE BECOME ADEPT AT HANDLING THE CAR WHEN THE BRAKES FAIL BUT I HAVE HAD SOME VERY CLOSE CALLS WHEN THE CAR KEEPS MOVING INTO INTERSECTIONS AFTER TRYING TO STOP. APPARENTLY, TOYOTA HAS MISDIAGNOSED MY PROBLEM FOR YEARS. I PAID $700 IN 2007 TO HAVE NEW 'BRAKE SENSORS' INSTALLED BUT THEY DID NOT FIX MY PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN VERY LUCKY TO NOT HAVE HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IN THE LAST 6+ YEARS! THE BRAKES ARE STILL GRABBING AND LOCKING ON ROUGH SURFACES YET TOYOTA HAS CONTINUED TO DENY THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM & THAT IT IS MORE WIDESPREAD THAN BEING ACKNOWLEDGED. *TR
THE FRONT DISK BRAKE ROTORS ARE REPEATEDLY WARPING DESPITE NORMAL DRIVING HABITS, CAUSING SHAKING OF STEERING WHEEL WHEN BRAKING AND POSSIBLY COMPROMISING VEHICLE STOPPING ABILITY. FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS AT 7,000 MILES, SECOND AT 15,000, THIRD AT 27,000. ROTORS WERE RESURFACED AT FIRST TWO OCCURRENCES TO TEMPORARILY CORRECT PROBLEM. TOYOTA WARRANTY SERVICE ONLY PROVIDES FOR RESURFACING RATHER THAN PART REPLACEMENT. IS THIS PROBLEM DUE TO DEFECTIVE ROTOR MATERIALS AND/OR FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM DESIGN?*JB
FRONT ROTORS ARE OUT OF ROUND. DEALER CUT THEM. THEY DEVELOPED THE SAME PROBLEM 4,000 MILES LATER. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER IF I HAD THEM CUT AGAIN IT WOULD COST ME MONEY. I HAD THEM CUT BY MY MECHANIC WHICH HAPPENS TO BE MY COUSIN AT NO CHARGE. I WAS TOLD BY OTHER CAMRY OWNERS THAT THEIR ROTORS WERE REPLACED BY TOYOTA. I HAVE 44,000 MILES ON MY 2002 CAMRY V6. THE ROTORS ARE OUT OF ROUND AGAIN AND TOYOTA HAS NOT RELEASED AFTER MARKET ROTORS FOR THAT CAR. I AM UN-HAPPY WITH THIS WHOLE SITUATION. *NM
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE VEHICLE SLID BACKWARD. TIRES DO NOT HAVE ANY TRACTION ON SNOW OR ICE AND FEELS THEY ARE UNSAFE. PH
WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONT END COLLISION. UPON IMPACT, NONE OF THE FRONTAL AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, AND THE FRONT SEAT BELTS FAILED TO RETRACT. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED BRUISES TO CHEST WHEN COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE STEERING WHEEL. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED A CUT ON FOREHEAD AND BRUISES ON KNEES WHEN COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE DASHBOARD. *AK *SC *JB
CONSUMER CALLED COMPLAINING WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT LOW SPEED WHEN SUFFER A SUDDEN ACCELERATION CAUSING A DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. TS
THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM WOULD COME ON AT DIFFERENT TIMES , MAKING THEM DEFECTIVE. THE MANUFACTURE STATED THAT SYSTEM WAS WORKING INEFFECTIVELY, HOWEVER IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE WORN TIRES. THE CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE HE REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. *AK THE CONSUMER WOULD JAM ON THE BRAKES AS HARD AS HE COULD. THEY WORKED FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, SLOWING THE VEHICLE DOWN TO ABOUT 10 MPH THEN RELEASING COMPLETELY AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ROLL INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. *SC
THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WITH THIS VEHICLE AND A NEWLY PURCHASED 2003 CAMRY. *JB SCC THE CONSUMER STATED THAT HE APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO TRAVEL FORWARD. THE CONSUMER CUT OFF THE IGNITION AND THE VEHICLE FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. *TC
PLASTIC DOOR HANDLES ON TOYOTA SEQUOIAS EASILY BREAK OFF, VERY FLIMSY. THIS COULD LEAD TO SOMEONE GETTING TRAPPED IN THEIR CAR, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND NEED TO OPEN THE DOOR QUICKLY OR AGGRESSIVELY. MY NEIGHBOR HAPPENS TO HAVE THE SAME VEHICLE EVEN THE SAME COLOR AND I ASKED HIM HOW HE LIKES IT AND HE SAID FANTASTIC, EXCEPT WE HAVE BROKEN OFF 2 DOOR HANDLES. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE SERVICE WRITER CASUALLY MENTIONED, "OH, WE GET THESE IN ALL THE TIME". I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THE TOYOTA ZONE OFFICE AND THEY WILL NOT PAY FOR THE $175 REPAIR. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFTEY HAZARD AND A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT.*AK
CONSTANT SQUEAKING FROM MY STEERING WHEEL. REPAIRED TWICE AT TOYOTA DEALER BUT STILL SQUEAKS. BROUGHT CAR TO MY REPAIR SHOP AN IT STILL SQUEAKS. FIRST INCIDENT AN SECOND TOOK PLACE UNDER WARRANTY. USUALLY SQUEAKS IN COLD WEATHER. *TR
THE FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS ARE WARPING DESPITE NORMAL DRIVING, CAUSING SHAKING OF STEERING WHEEL WHEN BRAKING AND POSSIBLY COMPROMISING VEHICLE STOPPING ABILITY. IT OCCURRED AT 10,000 MILES. TOYOTA WARRANTY SERVICE ONLY PROVIDES FOR RESURFACING THE ROTOR RATHER THAN PART REPLACEMENT. IS THIS PROBLEM DUE TO DEFECTIVE ROTOR MATERIALS AND/OR FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM DESIGN.*AK
I BOUGHT A 02 TOYOTA CAMRY SE LAST YEAR. I LIVE IN MICHIGAN AND IN THE WINTER IT SNOWS QUITE A BIT. GENERALLY NORMAL (NOT SNOW) TIRES WORK FINE IN THE WINTER. HOWEVER, THE NEW TIRES THAT COME WITH THE SE ARE NOT MEANT FOR WINTER WEATHER AT ALL. THEY PERFORM TERRIBLY EVEN IN THE LEAST AMOUNT OF NOW AND SKID. I HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS WHERE I ALMOST HAD FATAL ACCIDENTS. LUCKILY I DID NOT GET INTO A CRASH AS I DRIVE EXTREMELY SLOWLY. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY DID NOT DO ANYTHING. HOWEVER, THEY REPLACED THE TIRES FOR A FEW SE BUYERS BUT DID NOT DO SO FOR ME. I THINK TOYOTA KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. DT: THE CONTACT STATES THE REAR SEAT BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY GETS LODGED UNDER THE SEAT. THIS MAKES THE SEAT BELT INOPERATIVE. THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED HIM TO CONNECT THE SEAT BELT WHEN NOT IN USE, SO THE BUCKLE WILL NOT GO UNDER THE SEAT. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE' TO DEALER FOR AN OIL CHANGE, AND SINCE THEN THE VEHICLE EMITTED GRAY SMOKE. DEALER DETERMINED THAT TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO REPLACED CORRODED SPARK PLUG WIRES, AND GAVE THE VEHICLE A TUNE UP. ALSO THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT SMOKE CAME FROM A DEFECTIVE VALVE SEAL OR RINGS . *AK IT WAS FINALLY DETERMINED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS NOT THE PROBLEM IT WAS THE ENGINE WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *JB

AT 1,500 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER ON NOVEMBER 8, 2002 AND WAS TOLD THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR AND THEY RESET THE COMPUTER. THE CAR WAS FINE UNTIL I ARRIVED AT HOME AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AGAIN. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER ON NOVEMBER 11TH AND THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR. THEY WERE GOING TO REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION BUT NEEDED A PART. IT IS NOW NOVEMBER 25TH AND THE PART STILL HASN'T ARRIVED AND THE CAR HASN'T BEEN REPAIRED.

I NARROWLY AVOIDED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS THAT DAY, AS DID OTHERS I AM SURE. HOWEVER, I DISCOVERED WHILE SPEAKING WITH THE TIRE MANUFACTURER(TOYO) THAT THE TIRES ARE CONSIDERED "SUMMER" TIRES AND ARE NOT MADE FOR SNOW AND/OR ICE. THEY STATED THE TYPE OF TIRE PLACED ON THE CAR IS DETERMINED BY THE CAR MANUFACTURER NOT TOYO. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AS I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE PURCHASING CAMRYS WITHOUT KNOWING THEY NEED TO PURCHASE SNOW TIRES OR ALL SEASON TIRES. THEY APPARENTLY ARE NOT AS CONCERNED AS I AS THEY STATED THEY WOULD NOT DEBATE ON WHAT I WAS TOLD AT THE TIME OF THE SALE AND THE ONLY THING THEY COULD DO FOR ME IS TO ORDER REPLACEMENT TIRES AT A DISCOUNT. I THEN PROCEEDED TO CALL THE TIRE MANUFACTURER BACK TO EXPRESS MY CONCERN AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD PAY 75% OF THE COST OF THE SAME TIRE (TOYO, J33, P21560R 16 94V), TO REPLACE THE EXISTING TIRES. THEY STATED I COULD REPLACE THE TIRES WITH ANY MAKE OF MY CHOICE. IT WAS THEIR PREFERENCE THAT I USE A LOCAL COMPANY THAT SELLS TOYO TIRES. I STOPPED TO ORDER REPLACEMENT TIRES AND FOUND AFTER INSPECTION, THE TIRES ARE BARE DOWN THE CENTER AND ARE WORN DOWN TO THE WEARBARS. SO NOT ONLY AM I DRIVING, WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE, A CAR THAT DOES NOT HAVE ANY TYPE OF TREAD FOR SNOW/ICE I AM DRIVING WITH MINIMAL TREAD. I UNDERSTAND THE TIRES ARE HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES, HOWEVER I DO NOT FEEL THEY SHOULD HAVE WORN IN THE MANNER THEY DID AFTER 14000 MILES. I HAVE SEVERAL CONCERNS, ONE BEING WITH TOYOTA AND THE FACT THAT THE DEALER OR DEALERS ARE NOT INFORMING THE BUYER OF THE NEED TO PURCHASE ALL SEASON OR SNOW TIRES AT THE TIME OF THE SALE. HOW MANY CONSUMERS OR INNOCENT VICTIMS WILL BE OR HAVE BEEN INJURED IN ACCIDENTS DUE TO THIS SAME ISSUE. SECONDLY, THE TIRE MANUFACTURER FOR PROCUDING WHAT APPEARS TO ME DEFECTIVE TIRES.

THERE IS A STRONG SULFUR/ROTTEN EGG SMELL EMITTED BY THE VEHICLE WHETHER I DRIVE FOR ALONG TIME OR NOT. SERVICE FOLKS OVER PHONE INDICATED THAT IT WAS JUST A "NEW CAR" SYNDROME AND WOULD GO AWAY SHORTLY. 11,000 MILES LATER IT HAS NOT GONE AWAY. I LIVE IN ATLANTA WHERE WE HAVE LOW SULFUR CONTENT FUEL AND IT SHOULD NOT BE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. ON SHORT TRIPS, THE ENTIRE OUTSIDE AROUND THE CAR STINKS LIKE A SEWER WHEN I STOP. AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS, THE SMELL IS REALLY BAD. I CAN NOT USE THE FRESH AIR CIRCULATION BECAUSE OF THE SMELL. SEEMS LIKE THE PCV SYSTEM MAY NOT BE WORKING RIGHT, BUT THERE ARE NO MILS ON INDICATING A PROBLEM. IF THERE IS A CIRCULATION PROBLEM WHICH INCLUDES THE EXHAUST SYSTEM THERE COULD BE A SIGNIFICANT CO ISSUE THAT WE WOULDN'T BE AWARE OF UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE. PLEASE HELP GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS. *AK
BRAKES(ABS) ARE MUSHY AND PEDAL TRAVELS SO FAR DOWN I FEEL IT TAKES A LONGER TIME TO STOP THE CAR. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE BUT WAS TOLD THIS WAS NORMAL WITH THE 2002'S CAMRY. THEY ADJUSTED THE BRAKES BUT IT MADE NO DIFFERENCE. I TOOK OTHER 2002 CAMRY'S OUT FOR A TEST DRIVE ONLY TO FIND THERE BRAKES THE SAME. I HAVE DRIVEN SEVERAL TOYATO'S OVER THE YEARS AND NEVER HAD BRAKES LIKE THE 2002 CAMRY. SHE WAS CITED FOR FAILING TO YIELD. THE SECOND TIME, HER HUSBAND WAS STOPPING ON A SIDE STREET BEFORE ENTERING A MAIN STREET AND HE DISCOVERED HE WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND CONSEQUENTLY, HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE LAST ACCIDENT, THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND SHE CRASHED INTO HER GARAGE WALL CAUSING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGE. THE CONSUMER STATED PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENTS. THERE WERE RARE OCCASIONS, AT ANTICIPATED STOPS WHEN SHE LIFTED HER FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR TO SLOW DOWN TO PLACE IT ON THE BRAKE, THE BRAKE WOULD NOT ENGAGE.
