TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER WAS TRAVELING 15 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE UNCONTROLLABLY. THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE, BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESPOND. THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS UNRESPONSIVE. THE DRIVER CRASHED AGAINST THE PAVEMENT, A FENCE AND THEN DOVE INTO A CREEK. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION AND INJURIES TO THE BACK AND NECK. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT THE VEHICLE STALLED A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,300.

CRACKS IN DASHBOARD IN TWO PLACES ON PASSENGER SIDE. ONE VERTICAL ABOUT 3 INCHES LONG AND ONE HORIZONTAL JUST ABOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT RUNNING THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF GLOVE COMPARTMENT. AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE, I SEE THAT MANY TOYOTA SOLARA, SIENNA AND AVALON OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING OF SAME PROBLEM WITH CRACKS IN DASHBOARD. IT SEEMS TO BE MAINLY THE 2004 MODELS, BUT SAME COMPLAINT WITH 2005, 2006, 2007 MODELS. OBVIOUSLY, PROBLEM IS IN MATERIAL OF DASHBOARD AND IT SEEMS SINCE NEWER MODELS DO NOT SEEM TO HAVE THIS ISSUE, POSSIBLY TOYOTA FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM EXISTED AND CHANGED SUPPLIERS OR MATERIALS FOR DASHBOARD. I FEEL LIKE TOYOTA OWES IT TO LOYAL TOYOTA OWNERS (THIS IS MY 2ND TOYOTA - 1ST WAS '95 CAMRY COUPE WHICH I REPLACED IN '05 WITH THE '04 SOLARA SLE) TO REPLACE THE CRACKED DASHBOARDS SINCE IT SEEMS TO BE A TREND IN THE '04 - '07 SOLARA, SIENNA, AVALON. *TR
AT A STOP SIGN, A WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. FROM THAT POINT, THE VEHICLE AT SPEEDS UNDER CA. 40 MPH SURGED FASTER THEN SLOWER IN A JERKY SORT OF FASHION. AT SPEEDS ABOVE 50 IT SEEMED TO DRIVE NORMALLY. THE DEALER SAID THE VEHICLE WAS UNDRIVEABLE UNTIL THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. IT WAS REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. TOYOTA HAS REPEATEDLY REFUSED REIMBURSEMENT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN ACCELERATION THAT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO JUMP A CURVE AND CRASH INTO BRICK STEPS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AWAY AND REPAIRED. THE CONTACT HURT THEIR WRIST IN THE CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND IT WAS REPORTED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE PER THE DEALER. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,200. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
I TURNED ON THE MOTOR OF MY CAR WHICH WAS PARKED AT A HOME DEPOT. WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE (AND NOT ON THE GAS), THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND DID NOT STOP UNTIL IT HAD TRAVELED ABOUT 15 YARDS. *JS

AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A GROCERY STORE AND INJURED TEN PEOPLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED FOR THE INCIDENT AND THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED DURING THE CRASH. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED AND NO REPAIRS HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 79,000.

OUR 2004 CAMRY 2.4 ENGINE HAS JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH THE STRIPPED HEAD BOLTS AT 155,000 MILES AND IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP. THEY ARE TELLING ME IT MAY NEED A NEW ENGINE DUE TO THIS COMMON FAULTY TOYOTA DEFECT ON THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE. I AM OUTRAGED TO KNOW THAT I'M GONNA BE CHARGED ALMOST 6000 DOLLARS TO REPLACE A FAULTY ENGINE. WHY ISN'T TOYOTA DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS?! HOW MUCH CAN THEY GET AWAY WITH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. *TR

I WAS SLOWLY PULLING MY 2004 CAMRY INTO A PERPENDICULAR PARKING SPACE IN A PUBLIC PARKING LOT, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. AS I APPROACHED THE CURB TO COME TO A STOP, THE CAR SUDDENLY LEAPED FORWARD AT WHAT SEEMED LIKE FULL THROTTLE, JUMPED THE CURB, LUNGED UP A FLIGHT OF THREE CONCRETE STEPS, AND CRASHED THROUGH THE GLASS DOORS OF THE ENTRY OF THE BUILDING. MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, AT THE HOUR OF THE DAY WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED (3:30 PM), THERE ARE SMALL GROUPS OF YOUNG PEOPLE WAITING FOR RIDES OR CHATTING IN FRONT OF THIS FACILITY. BY SOME MIRACLE THERE WERE NO PEOPLE PRESENT ON THE SIDEWALK IN FRONT OF THE CAR OR COMING OUT OF OR GOING INTO THE BUILDING WHEN THIS HAPPENED. TRULY A MIRACLE THAT NO ONE WAS HURT OR WORSE. THERE WERE NO WITNESSES. THE POLICE HAD THE CAR REMOVED BY FLATBED TO A BODY SHOP YARD. I LATER LEARNED THAT THE POLICE HAD DRIVEN THE CAR IN THE BODY SHOP YARD AND COMMENTED THAT THE CAR DROVE WITHOUT ISSUES. I SUBSEQUENTLY RECEIVED A CARELESS DRIVING CITATION IN THE MAIL. A LOCAL MEDIA REPORT OF THE INCIDENT, CRIBBED FROM THE POLICE BLOTTER, STATED THAT THE POLICE BELIEVED THE CAUSE OF THE INCIDENT WAS DRIVER ERROR. THERE IS NOT THE LEAST DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT MY FOOT WAS FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHICH WENT TO THE FLOOR AND DID NOT STOP THE CAR! THE CAR ACTED ON ITS OWN AS IF POSSESSED! I WILL NEVER DRIVE THIS CAR AGAIN! I BOUGHT A NEW CAR AND TOOK A HUGE LOSS ON THE VALUE OF THE TOYOTA BY SELLING IT FOR PARTS TO A LOCAL MECHANIC FOR A TENTH OF ITS RETAIL VALUE SO IT WOULD NEVER FIND ITS WAY BACK ONTO THE ROAD TO THREATEN OTHER PEOPLE WITH INJURY OR DEATH! *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY, ALL OF A SUDDEN WHEN I TRIED TO PRESS ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO ACCELERATE, NOTHING HAPPENED, AND VEHICLE STARTED TO SLOWLY SLOW DOWN. I PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD, TURNED OFF VEHICLE AND RESTARTED. VEHICLE ACCELERATE FINE AFTER THAT. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. THE TOYOTA DEALER CHECKED AND FOUND THROTTLE BODY FAILURE AND REPLACED IT. COST MORE THAN $1300. *KB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE AT A STOP LIGHT, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE THEN REVERSED AND CRASHED INTO THE VEHCLE A SECOND TIME FROM THE FRONT END. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND ONE INJURY WAS REPORTED. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE REAR PASSENGER WHEEL FELT ABNORMAL AND AS A RESULT THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO AN EMBANKMENT. THE AIR BAGS AGAIN DID NOT DEPLOY AND THE CONTACT INJURED HER BACK AND LEGS. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

APPROXIMATELY EIGHT MONTHS LATER, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO AVOID BEING STRUCK BY ANOTHER VEHICLE, LOST CONTROL, DROVE ACROSS FOUR LANES, AND CRASHED INTO A DITCH. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED AND WAS TOWED TO A POLICE IMPOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS RETRIEVED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 25,000.
NO INCIDENT, PROGRAM KEEP ASKING FOR DATE: ITS A DUMMY DATE. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF TOYOTA CAMRY LXI 2004. AROUND 35,260 MILES AND BEFORE 3 YEARS (UNDER WARRANTY) STEERING STARTED CAUSING TROUBLE, STARTED TO FEEL AND HEAR CLLCKING IN THE STEERING WHEN EVER THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED OR DURING DRIVING IN EITHER DIRECTION. IN ADDITION TO THIS PROBLEM SOME TIMES STEERING GETS REALLY HARD DURING DRIVING. I TOOK THE CAR TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER IN CHICAGO AND IT WAS TESTED BY A MECHANIC AND I WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM. AFTER 16 MONTHS AND AT 43,752 MILES THE PROBLEM GOT WORST AND I HAD TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO THE SAME AUTHORIZED DEALER IN CHICAGO, AND AFTER CHECKING IT I WAS TOLD THAT YES THEIR IS A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING AND IT WILL COST ME $520 + LABOR TO FIX IT. I REFUSED TO PAY AND TOLD THEM THAT I WILL FILE A COMPLAIN WITH TOYOTA CORP THAT WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR FOR THE SAME REASON UNDER WARRANTY IT WAS NOT FIXED AND NOW YOU WANT TO FIX THE SAME PROBLEM CHARGING THE CUSTOMER. FINALLY THE MANAGER GOT THE OK FROM TOYOTA CORP AND FIXED THE PROBLEM WITHOUT CHARGE. NOW AFTER 3 YEARS AT 63,632 MILES SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING RETURNED AND A AUTHORIZED DEALER IN CALIFORNIA WANTS TO CHARGE ME $715 + LABOR. I FILED A ONLINE COMPLAIN WITH TOYOTA CORP (MAIN OFFICE IN TORRANCE, CA) AND AFTER INVESTIGATION THEY TOLD ME THAT WHEN THE AUTHORIZED DEALER IN CHICAGO FIXED THE PROBLEM, HE FIXED IT AS A GOODWILL ! WHAT DOES IT MEAN? WHEN I TOOK THE CAR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND IT WAS FIXED FOR NO CHARGE. I DON'T THINK I LIKE TO PAY ANY MONEY FOR THIS KIND OF PROBLEM AND TOYOTA CORP SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WITH NO CHARGE TO CUSTOMER. *TR

ALTHOUGH CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN GARAGED THE DASHBOARD IS CRACKED AND MELTING AND EVERY DAY THE MATERIAL CRACKS ARE GETTING WIDER. *TR

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO PROBLEMS WITH THE FRONT SEAT BELTS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED ABOUT A YEAR AGO, THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT STARTED FOLDING OVER ITSELF IN THE SLOT MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO PULL OUT. AFTER PULLING HARD AND MANIPULATING IT TO STRAIGHTEN IT OUT, IT WOULDN'T TIGHTEN UP OR RETRACT. THE CONSUMER STATED IT USED TO HAPPEN OCCASIONALLY, BUT NOW HE HAS TO STRUGGLE WITH IT OVER 50% OF THE TIME. THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT, HAS DEVELOPED THE SAME PROBLEM. *JB

SATURDAY AFTERNOON 19 NOV 2011, THE ACCELERATOR ON MY 2004 4-CYLINDER CAMRY BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE -- INEXPLICABLY SLOWING TO A CRAWL AND/OR SURGING FORWARD SEEMINGLY INDEPENDENT OF HOW HARD I DEPRESSED THE GAS PEDAL. I BARELY GOT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WITHOUT BEING HIT FROM BEHIND OR SMASHING INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR HAD DIED, AND REPLACED IT AT A COST IN EXCESS OF $600!!! I'VE SEEN REPORTS THAT THIS IS RELATIVELY COMMON IN THIS "FLY-BY-WIRE" DESIGN AND AM VERY CONCERNED THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THIS MODEL TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. NO WAY SHOULD SUCH AN ISSUE ARISE AFTER ONLY 40000 MILES ON MY CAR. I CONTACTED TOYOTA ABOUT REIMBURSING ME FOR CORRECTING THIS SAFETY DESIGN DEFECT, AND BOTH THE LOCAL DEALER AND TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE TOLD ME IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS WHERE TO GO -- THE LOCAL DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS ALMOST LITERALLY TELLING ME TO F...O..! *TR
THE LEFT FRONT TIRE ( NEW TIRE, I PUNCHED 4 NEW MICHELIN TIRES 7/11) ON MY CAR POPPED. I AM NOT SURE IF THE CAR PEDAL GOT STUCK FIRST, EVERYTHING HAPPENED FAST. STEERING BECAME IMPOSSIBLE AND THE CAR WHEN SIDE TO SIDE AS I ATTEMPTED TO STEER THE CAR. THE STEWING WHEEL WOULD TURN, BUT IT DIDN'T WORK. THE MAJOR THING IS THAT I COULDN'T OPERATE THE CAR BECAUSE OF THE PEDAL GETTING STUCK AND THE STEERING WAS IMPOSSIBLE AFTER THAT. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO CARRIAGE CAGE AUTO REPAIR BY AAA, WHO RECOMMENDED I TAKE IT THERE, SINCE THE CAR COULD NOT BE DRIVEN. I THEN WENT TO THE ER ROOM FOR CARE. NATIONWIDE INSURANCE WAS NOTIFIED, THEY GAVE AN ESTIMATE OF OVER FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPAIR THE CAR. TOYOTA IN LAKE CITY, WA -BRUCE IN AUTO CARE WAS NOTIFIED REGARDING THE PEDAL BECOMING STUCK. I WILL HAVE TO TAKE THE CAR THERE ONCE IT IS REPAIRED. I WONDER HOW SAFE IS THE CAR AND WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT. *TR
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH 35,000 MILES WHEN I BOUGHT IT. I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR STALLING WHEN ACCELERATED, I TOOK IT TO AUTO ZONE TO HAVE THEM CHECK WITH A COMPUTER WHICH IT SHOWED THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE THROTLE. I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER AND I HAVE BEEN GETTING THE RUN AROUND, AS DAYS GOES BY THE PROBLEM HAS INCREASED, NOW THE GAS PEDAL DOESNT NEED TO BE PRESSED FOR THE CAR TO TAKE OFF, THE RPM GOES TO 1500 EVEN WITH THE BREAKS ON. I WORK 6 MILES FROM THE HOUSE AND I HAD TO START THE CAR 8 TIMES TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO WORK. I REALLY THINK THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE INSTEAD OF IGNORING PEOPLE WHEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THEIR PRODUCTS. DOES THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED IN 2009 NEED TO HAPPEN TO ME BEFORE I GET A SOLUTION OR AN ANSWER TO MY QUESTIONS. BACK THEN TOYOTA KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND AS USUAL THEY SWEPT IT UNDER THE RUG. STARTED THE VEHICLE ON SATURDAY 10/29/2011, PUT IT IN REVERSE AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY ONTO THE STREET AND PUT IT ON DRIVE. I STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE VEHICLE MOVED FORWARD ABOUT 30FEET AND STALLED OUT. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO STARTED AND IT WOULD NOT. AFTER I COMPLETELY TURNED OFF THE IGNITION, I WAS ABLE TO RESTARTED IT. I TOOK IT TO GET IT CHECKED OUT AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY ACTUATOR STUCK ON THE CLOSED POSITION. I LOOKED IT UP ON LINE AND FOUND MANY, MANY INCIDENTS OF THE SAME NATURE. ON MONDAY, I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THAT PROBLEM AND IT'S NOT A RECALL. THE DEFECTIVE FACTORY INSTALLED PART COSTS $1000 PLUS ABOUT $300 FOR LABOR. I CONTACTED TOYOTA USA, BUT THEY HAVE NOT ACKNOWLEDGED ME, SO FAR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. WHEN WE TOOK IT TO GET IT CHECKED OUT IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AS WE WERE CROSSING ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. AND, I GUESS, THIS IS NOT A CONCERN FOR TOYOTA. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,941.
ON I-5, IN THE FAST LANE OUTSIDE PORTLAND, OREGON WITHOUT WARNING THE CAR LOST ALL POWER. I WAS ABLE TO DRIFT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BUT WAS STILL IN TRAFFIC. WHEN I REACHED A REPAIR SHOP THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A CHIP FAILURE IN THE GAS PEDAL. THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED ANYWHERE, WITHOUT GAS THE CAR JUST STOPS, AND THE RESULT COULD BE FAR MORE SERIOUS. *TR

THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 26,000.
WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY CITY HIGHWAY, THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLE STUCK WIDE OPEN. THE CAR'S COMPUTER SHUT IT DOWN, CAUSING THE CAR TO STOP IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESTART, AS THE STUCK OPEN THROTTLE BODY MADE THE ENGINE RACE AND THE COMPUTER SHUT IT DOWN. AS THIS WAS A KNOW FACTORY DESIGN DEFECT, THE NEWLY REDESIGNED REPLACEMENT THROTTLE BODY FIXED THE PROBLEM BUT TOYOTA CHARGES ABOUT $1000 FOR THE REPLACEMENT PART. WITH THE MANY REPORTED FAILURES OF THIS PART AND THE DECISION TO MAKE A REDESIGN TO CURE THE PROBLEM, IT APPEARS THAT THE CUSTOMER ABSORBS THE CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY. THERE WAS NO HELP FROM THE LOCAL DEALER ETC! ERGO MY INITIATION OF A COMPLAINT! HEAD GASKET SCREWS ARE STRIPPED. ENGINE LOST COOLANT BUT NO LEAK WAS EVIDENT. AFTER NUMEROUS REPAIRS TO COOLING SYSTEM, EVENTUALLY HEAD GASKET BLEW AND HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE WITH A REBUILT ONE. COOLANT LOSS CONTINUED WITH SECOND ENGINE. RADIATOR WAS REPLACED. COOLANT LOSS CONTINUES WITH NEW RADIATOR. NOW WE KNOW THAT THE HEAD GASKET SCREWS ARE STRIPPED, THE ORIGINAL AND ONLY SOURCE OF THE LEAK. DESIGN FLAW CAUSES STRIPPED HEAD BOLTS IN THIS MODEL. *TR

ANOTHER TOYOTA ACCELERATOR PROBLEM I WAS A GREAT BELIEVER IN TOYOTA'S RELIABILITY REPUTATION UNTIL 6/3/2011 WHEN MY WIFE CALLED FROM THE SIDE OF A ROAD TO SAY THAT THE GAS PEDAL DIDN'T WORK. LUCKILY, BEFORE SHE HAD PULLED OUT INTO THE TRAFFIC LANE THE ONCOMING CAR HAD ALREADY STOPPED TO TURN INTO THE ROAD SHE WAS LEAVING; OTHERWISE SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN T-BONED. SHOP DIAGNOSTICS INDICATED FAILURE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR (APPS). THE CAR IS A 2004 V-6 CAMRY WITH 140,000 MILES ON IT. WHEN CONTACTED ABOUT THE PROBLEM, TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS IN CALIFORNIA DENIED CULPABILITY. THE APPS IS AN ELECTRONIC GADGET WHICH REPLACES THE OLD CABLE/PULLEY GAS PEDAL LINKAGE BETWEEN THE GAS PEDAL AND THE FUEL INJECTORS OR CARBURETOR(S). ITS PURPOSE IS TO IMPROVE EMISSIONS CONTROL. THERE IS NO DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE TO TEST ITS REMAINING LIFE. THE OLD CABLE/PULLEY SYSTEM COULD BE CHECKED VISUALLY AND BY TOUCH AND BE REPLACED RATHER CHEAPLY IF NEED BE. APPS FAILURE RESULTS IN THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY REVERTING TO IDLE SPEED. IF IT FAILS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT HIGH SPEED, THERE WILL BE AN INSTANTANEOUS LOSS OF SPEED AND POWER. THE PERSON BEHIND YOU WILL HAVE NO WARNING AND YOU WILL PROBABLY BE REAR-ENDED. IF IT FAILS DURING ACCELERATION TO CROSS TRAFFIC OR MERGE INTO TRAFFIC YOU WILL PROBABLY BE HIT FROM THE SIDE. CLEARLY THE APPS TRADES OFF VEHICLE SAFETY FOR IMPROVED EMISSIONS CONTROL. IF THE OLD CABLE/PULLEY WERE STILL IN PLACE AS A FAIL-SAFE MEASURE, THEN APPS FAILURE WOULD NOT PRESENT A SAFETY HAZARD. HOWEVER, IT WOULD STILL COST YOU ABOUT $600 TO REPLACE. WHEN HYDRAULIC BRAKES WERE INTRODUCED THE CABLE/PULLEY SYSTEM FOR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS WISELY RETAINED AS A FAIL-SAFE MEASURE. DUH. *TR

OUR CONCERN IS THIS IS A POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUE, AS THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IS DEPLOYED THROUGH THE DASHBOARD. IF THE DASHBOARD IS WEAKENED BY THIS CRACKING. WOULD THIS INCREASE THE POSSIBILITY THE AIRBAG DEPLOYING INCORRECTLY, THUS RAISING THE POSSIBILITY OF INJURY OR DEATH?
