I WAS DRIVING FORWARD SLOWLY IN A DRIVEWAY AND WAS BRAKING LIGHTLY TO STOP BEFORE TURNING ONTO A STREET. ALTHOUGH I WAS BRAKING, MY CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE. I PRESSED THE BRAKE HARD AND IT BUCKED BRIEFLY. THEN I PUT IT IN PARK. THE ENGINE RACED FOR A FEW MORE SECONDS AND THEN DROPPED BACK TO NORMAL. *TR
SINCE TOYOTA IS HAVING ALL THESE PROBLEMS I WANT TO BRING UP A PROBLEM WITH MY TOYOTA CAMRY THAT IS A SAFETY ISSUE BUT HAS NOT CAUSED A PROBLEM YET. IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. ABOUT A TWO MONTHS AGO I GOT AN AIRBAG MALFUNCTION LIGHT. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE LIGHT ON THE CONSOLE THAT TELLS YOU WHETHER THERE IS A PASSENGER IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WAS MALFUNCTIONING TOO. SO WITH SOMEONE IN THE FRONT RIGHT SEAT, THE INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE SYSTEM THINKS THERE IS NO ONE THERE SO THE AIRBAG IS OFF. I SAID SOMETHING TO THE DEALER BUT HE DID NOT MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT A RECALL. THERE IS 122K MILES ON THE CAR. MAYBE THIS IS JUST SOME SENSOR THAT WORE OUT BUT I WANTED TO MENTION IT WITH ALL THE OTHER SAFETY ISSUES GOING ON WITH TOYOTA. *JB
2004 CAMRY XLE WAS PARKED AT TOP OF DRIVEWAY WHICH HAD AN INCLINE OF APPROX 25%.WHEN PLACED IN REVERSE, THE CAR RACED BACKWARDS AT HIGH SPEED - TOO FAST FOR ANY VISUAL OR PHYSICAL CONTROL. CAR WAS STOPPED BY APPLYING VERY FORCEFUL BRAKE PRESSURE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH WITH HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN OVER A CONCRETE BARRIER, HIT A VEHICLE AND THEN HIT A GAS METER. HE SUSTAINED MINOR BACK INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. A POLICE REPORT IS AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 46000.
I WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, BUT SAW A CAR COMING, SO I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE. THE CAR ACCELERATED AT A VERY FAST PACE OUT OF THE PARKING SPACE, INTO THE ROAD, JUST MISSING THE CAR, BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO STOP IT. ON DECEMBER 14, 2009, I HAD BACKED UP MY DRIVEWAY (TO A LEVEL SPOT) . I DECIDED TO STRAIGHTEN OUT THE CAR, SO I DROVE THE CAR FORWARD, PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO PUT IT IN REVERSE AND THE CAR WENT SPEEDING DOWN THE DRIVEWAY, THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK, UNTIL I GOT OUT INTO THE ROAD, THEN THE CAR STOPPED. DURING ROUTINE VEHICLE MAINTENANCE TOYOTA MECHANIC REPORTED LOOSE STEERING COLUMN. LOTS OF PLAY IN STEERING WHEEL WHEN DRIVING - VERY POOR RESPONSIVENESS. VEHICLE TAKEN TO TOYOTA DEALER - NEW INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT REPLACED AT MY COST. *TR
LTR OF THANKS FOR THE FEBRUARY 24TH TESTIMONY BEFORE THE HOUSE COMMITTEE, WHICH DETAILED NHTSA'S SUPERVISION OF SEVERAL TOYOTA VEHICLE RECALLS; IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THIS ISSUE BE THOROUGHLY ASSESSED TO DETERMINE THE SAFETY OF ALL TOYOTA VEHICLES. *TGW WHEN THE CONSUMER ATTEMPTED TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THE CONSUMER AVOIDED A COLLISION, BY MAKING A SHARP RIGHT TURN AND WITHIN A FEW MINUTES THE VEHICLE WAS BACK UNDER HER CONTROL. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REMOVED THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR MAT AND PLACED IT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, BUT COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE CONSUMER DIDN'T EXPERIENCE ANOTHER PROBLEM UNTIL JANUARY 15, 2010 SHE WAS LEAVING THE SERVICE STATION, TURNED RIGHT ONTO THE MAIN STREET AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TWICE FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THE DEALER CHECKED THE VEHICLE AGAIN, BUT TO NO AVAIL. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STARTED THE IGNITION. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO STOP. THE IDENTICAL FAILURE OCCURRED ON THE NEXT DAY. CURRENTLY, THE VEHICLE IS PARKED AND NOT BEING DRIVEN DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 45,300. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46.650. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 25 MPH AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING UP HILL WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED AND WAS MOVING SLOWLY. THE MANUFACTURER AND AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND A COMPLAINT WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE CONTACT WAS FORCED TO USE ANOTHER VEHICLE BECAUSE HE FEELS THAT THE VEHICLE ISN'T SAFE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT DID TAKE THE VEHICLE TO SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS TO FIND OUT THE PROBLEM. THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE PEDAL SYSTEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 111,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 111,000.
MY SON REPORTED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY HE TOOK HIS FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR TO BEGIN BRAKING, THE CAR/ENGINE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE FORCING HIM TO APPLY FULL FORCE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN. HE ALSO REPORTED THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS "SURGING." HE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND EXIT THE HIGHWAY SAFELY. THE NEXT DAY, WE TOOK THE CAR TO NORTH HILLS TOYOTA (PITTSBURGH) WHO REPORTED THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE PROBLEM. NO SURPRISE! HE IS AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER WITH A PERFECT DRIVING RECORD AND WAS TRULY UPSET BY WHAT HAPPENED. HE IS ALSO THE SOLE DRIVER OF THIS VEHICLE, SO HE KNOWS HOW THE CAR DRIVES, ETC. BY THE WAY, WE DO NOT HAVE FLOORMATS ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE OF THE CAR DUE TO THE RECENT REPORTS OF ACCELERATORS BEING WEDGED IN THE FLOORMAT. *TR
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: WITHOUT HEARING THE NEWS RELATED TO TOYOTA VEHICLE RECALL, I HAVE FELT REALLY STUPID HOW I COULD HAVE HAD THE ACCIDENT. RECALLING THE PROCESS OF THE ACCIDENT, I MIGHT HAVE TO SAY IT WAS WEIRD. BEFORE THE CRASH, I CLEARLY NOTICED THE RED LIGHT AND A STOPPED CAR JUST IN FRONT OF ME ON N PERKINS RD, CLOSE TO MCELROY RD IN STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA, AND THE DISTANCE WAS MORE THAN 20 METERS APART AT THAT MOMENT. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AS USUAL, BUT MY CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN UNTIL HIT THE CAR BEFORE MINE, AND THE AIRBAG DID NOT POP OUT. MY FACE WAS KNOCKED ONTO THE STEERING WHEEL AND ONE OF MY GLASSES SMASHED, FORTUNATELY NOT MAKING ME BLIND, AND TWO TEETH IN MOUTH WERE BLEEDING ALONG WITH SOME SCRATCHES ON MY FACE. THE CAR WAS TOTALED AT THE SPEED OF LESS 40 MI/H. PEOPLE LOVE TOYOTA VEHICLES FOR THE REASON OF SAVING GAS AT THE SACRIFICE OF SAFETY. SHORTLY, THE POLICE AND AMBULANCE ARRIVED. I DECLINED ANY MEDICAL ARRANGEMENT AFTER BEING TESTED THAT MY MIND WAS UNDER CONTROL AND COULD MAKE DECISION CLEARLY BECAUSE I WAS NOT SURE WHETHER MY INSURANCE COVERS THE COST OR NOT. AND NOW, AS THE PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA VEHICLES WAS DISCLOSED, I FEEL MY ACCIDENT MIGHT ALSO BE DUE TO THE SAME GAS PEDAL DEFECT. (IN STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA, CALL: 405-372-4171 TO REQUEST A REPORT). I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. IT HAS A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY WHICH HAS LEFT MY WIFE STRANDED AND COST $1000 TO FIX FROM THE DEALER. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND A FEW OF MY FRIENDS HAVE HAD TO PAY TWICE TO GET THIS FIXED. THE OTHER ISSUE IS THERE A DEFECTIVE PART IN THE STEERING LINKAGE THAT POPS WHEN YOU TURN. THIS EVENTUALLY LEADS TO SLOP IN THE STEERING AND IT CAUSE MY TO GO IN THE DITCH. THIS ACCIDENT HAS GIVEN ME A CHRONIC BACK CONDITION AND PREVENTED ME FROM COMMISSIONING IN THE MILITARY. THIS ISSUE IS ALSO KNOWN TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE CAMRYS BUT TOYOTA REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTED IT; HOWEVER, IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 10 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE THROTTLE BODY; THE MECHANIC ADVISED HER TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP. THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THEY COULD OFFER NO ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 106,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 86,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH ATTEMPTING TO STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED WITH AN UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO STOP WITH EXTREME PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE. THE IDENTICAL FAILURE OCCURRED ON TEN SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74,197. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA SOLARA. THE DRIVER STATED THE DASHBOARD HAD BEGUN TO EXHIBIT SEVERE CRACKING. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND PICTURES WERE TAKEN TO SUBMIT TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR EVALUATION. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT HAD NOT PROPERLY ADDRESSED THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,400 AND THE CURRENT WAS 14,260. I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY ALONG WITH MY DAUGHTER IN MY 2004 CAMRY WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT WENT ON BY ITSELF. THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. I COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHY THE CAR WAS DOING THIS, AND HIT THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTON OFF. THAT TOOK CARE OF THE ISSUE, BUT IT WAS VERY FRIGHTENING. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED REPEATEDLY AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. SUDDENLY, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN ON ITS OWN. THE FAILURE OCCURRED TWICE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE THIRD TIME, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING IN A PARKING LOT, AT WHICH TIME A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO PERSONAL INJURIES OR VEHICLE DAMAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE DEALERS POSSESSION FOR FOURTEEN DAYS TO PERFORM FURTHER INSPECTION OF THE ACCELERATION FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED, AND THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 43,593. IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY ON A BUSY STREET, MY CAR EXPERIENCED A THROTTLE BODY FAILURE. THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND MY CAR STALLED IN MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. WE HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL TO PULL IT OFF FROM THE ROAD AND WAIT FOR A TOW TRUCK. THE SERVICE SHOP ADVISED ME THAT IT WILL COST OVER $1000 TO FIX THE FAULTY THROTTLE BODY. TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND FIXED IT IN LATER MODEL YEARS, BUT TO DATE, NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AS IT DOES AFFECT ALL 2004 CAMRYS. MY CAR ONLY HAS 45,000 MILES ON IT. *TR
ON SEPTEMBER 28, 2009 MY MOTHER WAS DRIVING HER 2004 TOYOTA SOLARA AND HAD AN ACCIDENT. THE CAR JUMPED THE CURB, HIT A TREE, A LAMP POST, AND CRASHED INTO A STONE SIGN. SHE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE THEY FOUND A LARGE BRUISE ON HER ARM. THE DOCTORS SENT HER FOR A SCAN RIGHT AWAY, BUT SHE HAD A STROKE AND NEVER RECOVERED. SHE DIED FOUR DAYS LATER. I REALIZE THAT THE CURRENT TOYOTA ACCELERATOR RECALL DOES NOT INVOLVE THE SOLARA AT THIS TIME, BUT OUR FAMILY IS NOW SUSPICIOUS. A CAUSE OF MY MOTHER'S ACCIDENT HAS NOT BE DETERMINED. SHE DIED BEFORE THE POLICE WERE ABLE TO ASK HER ABOUT THE ACCIDENT. THE CAR IS STILL SMASHED UP AND HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. SHOULD WE INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER FURTHER? THE KEY IN MY TOYOTA SPECIAL EDITION 2004 CAMRY IS DESIGNED TO BE REMOVED ONLY WHEN THE GEAR SHIFT IS IN THE PARK POSITION. HOWEVER, MINE CAN BE REMOVED REGARDLESS OF THE POSITION OF THE GEAR SHIFT. EX: ONCE THE CAR IS STOPPED AND SHUT OFF AND SHOULD IT STILL BE IN THE DRIVE POSITION, THE KEY CAN BE REMOVED. THIS SHOULD NOT BE.. AS A RESULT , I HAD AN ACCIDENT AS THE CAR ROLLED DOWN AN INCLINE AND STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE..NO ONE WAS IN THE CAR AT THE TIME, BUT A CHILD COULD HAVE BEEN IN A CAR SEAT IN THE REAR AND I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP THE CAR. I T HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST THREE TIMES WHILE UNDER WARRANTY, BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS MY FAULT FOR NOT PLACING THE CAR IN THE PARK POSITION BEFORE EXITING THE VEHICLE. DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL THE ACCIDENT THAT IT WAS NOT DESIGNED THAT WAY. NOTIFIED THE CORPORATE OFFICE OF TOYOTA AND THEY RESPONDED WITH THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND WOULD NOT ACKNOWLEDGE ANY SAFETY PROBLEM. WORLD TOYOTA IN ATLANTA WILL REPAIR THE PROBLEM FOR APPROXIMATELY $424.00, BUT I FEEL IT SHOULD BE TOYOTA'S RESPONSIBILITY AND DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN HER HUSBAND WAS DRIVING, THE VEHICLE WENT FROM THE LEFT LANE TO THE RIGHT LANE, DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THE VEHICLE THEN ERUPTED INTO FLAMES. THE DRIVER WAS KILLED AS A RESULT OF THE CRASH. THERE WERE THREE WITNESSES WHO STATED THAT THEY NEVER SAW ANY BRAKE LIGHTS OR SKID MARKS. ALSO THE STATE TROOPER WHO INVESTIGATED THE CRASH STATED THAT HE ALSO NOTICED NO SKID MARKS. IT WAS NOT DETERMINED AT WHAT SPEED THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELLING BUT IT WAS TOTALED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER TO-DATE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 70,000.
I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA SOLARA, LIKE A CAMRY, I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM THE ST. CLOUD, MN TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN THE SUMMER OF 2009. I COMPLAINED OF AN OCCASIONAL SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHEN I WOULD SHIFT INTO DRIVE. THEY SAID TO BRING IT IN, I DID, THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING. THE FRONT WHEELS WERE SPINNING AND THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A ROW OF STONES. THE CONTACT WAS UNINJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE SUSTAINED DAMAGES TO THE UNDER CARRIAGE AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE DAMAGES. I WAS DRIVING ON NJ PARKWAY SOUTH AT APPROXIMATELY 55MPH IN THE LEFT LANE. SUDDENLY THE CAR HAD NO TRACTION AND WENT OUT OF CONTROL. I APPLIED BRAKES TO SLOW IT DOWN AND TRIED TO BRING IT UNDER CONTROL. THE CAR SWERVED TO THE RIGHT INTO THE NEXT LANE, THEN TURNED LEFT ONTO THE SHOULDER , BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY (SECOND LANE FROM THE LEFT) AND EVENTUALLY STOPPED FACING TRAFFIC COMING SOUTH. IT HAD BEEN RAINING SINCE THE PREVIOUS NIGHT, BUT THE RAIN WAS LIGHT. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY USUALLY REPAIR SHOP. THEY DID A SYSTEM COMPUTER SCAN, RESULTING IN SEVERAL PAGES OF OUTPUT WHICH I TOOK TO TOYOTA SERVICE STATION. THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO INTERPRET THE PRINTED SCAN. THEY PERFORMED THEIR OWN SCAN AND TOLD ME THE OUTPUT DID NOT SHOW ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THE ONLY EXPLANATION THEY COULD GIVE ME WAS AN OIL SLICK OR A PEBBLE ON THE ROAD AND EMPHASIZED THAT THE TRACTION CONTROL WORKS ONLY AT LESS THAN 5MPH. WE OWN A 2004 CAMRY LE. THIS CAR HAD BEEN IN TWO SEPARATE ACCIDENTS - ONE IN 23 DECEMBER 2007 AND 21 AUGUST 2009 WHEREIN THE ACCELERATOR TOOK OVER THE CAR CAUSING ACCIDENTS AND EXTENSIVE HOOD DAMAGES COSTING THE INSURANCE WELL OVER $5,000. "I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER MY CAR" WAS THE ONLY REASON I CAN GIVE FOR THESE TWO INCIDENTS. THE CONTACT WAS NOT IN AGREEMENT WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND A SECOND DEALER DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE AND CONFIRMED THAT IT COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, WHILE THE DRIVER WAS AT A STOP LIGHT, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS NOT IN THE VEHICLE AND COULD PROVIDE ADDITIONAL DETAILS REGARDING THE MOST RECENT FAILURE. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. ACCELERATION ON MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY BEGAN TO FLUCTUATE WILDLY WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. CAR WOULD SUDDENLY ACCELERATE, THEN DECELERATE ALMOST NON-STOP. I SHUT ENGINE OFF, CALLED TOYOTA AND HAD THE CAR TOWED IN. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD BE REPLACED UNDER A FEDERALLY MANDATED WARRANTY - CAR HAD 76,000 MILES, AND WARRANTY WAS GOOD TO 80,000 MILES. HOWEVER THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY HAD SIMULTANEOUSLY FAILED. THAT WOULD COST ME $681. TOYOTA'S OWN TECHNICIAN SAID THAT THE ECM FAILURE CAUSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY TO FAIL. TOYOTA CORPORATE, HOWEVER, TOLD ME THAT THE TWO INCIDENTS WERE UNRELATED. AFTER READING ABOUT THE "ACCELERATOR PEDAL STICKING" PROBLEM IN THE NEWS LATELY, I WONDER IF MY PROBLEM IS NOT PART OF A MUCH LARGER PROBLEM INVOLVING THE ECM ON TOYOTAS CARS. THIS COMPLAINT DEALS WITH ALL TOYOTA CARS WITH REAR WHEEL DRUM BRAKES. ON MY CAR AND MANY OTHERS POSSIBLY THE PEDAL IS SOFT HAS TO GO DOWN QUITE A WAYS TO ACTIVATE BRAKES. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS ALTHOUGH I DRIVE CONSERVATIVELY I FEEL MY BRAKING WAS COMPROMISED WHEN I NEED QUICK BRAKING RESPONSE. I BELIEVE THE REASON IS THE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM ON MY REAR BRAKES WAS AND IS NOT WORKING. THIS MECHANISM ON ALL MODERN CARS WITH REAR DRUM BRAKES ADJUSTS FOR WEAR BY BRINGING THE BRAKE SHOES CLOSER TO THE DRUM WHEN BACKING AND BRAKING. AN AUTOMATIC ADJUSTMENT. WHEN THE MECHANISM ISN'T WORKING THE REAR BRAKE SHOES GET FARTHER AND FARTHER FROM THE DRUM DUE TO WEAR AND ONE MUST PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL FARTHER AND FARTHER DOWN ON BRAKING TO GET THE SHOES TO CONTACT THE DRUMS BEFORE BRAKING CAN BEGIN. THIS DELAYS THE BRAKING TIME OF THE DRIVER CONSIDERABLY. RECENTLY GETTING NEW TIRES THE MECHANIC NOTED MY SOFT BRAKE PEDAL AND REMOVED THE REAR BRAKE DRUMS AND MANUALLY ADJUSTED THE SHOES TO BRING THEM IN LIGHT CONTACT WITH THE DRUM. MY BRAKE PEDAL GOT HARD AGAIN AND ACTIVATED AT THE TOP. TOYOTA SHOULD BRING THE CARS IN TO CHECK THIS LACK OF ADJUSTMENT PROBLEM AS I WOULDN'T DOUBT THERE HAVE BEEN ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF IT. WITH THE NEW CARS WITH DISK BRAKES THE PADS ARE ALWAYS AGAINST THE DISK AND THE IS NO SOFT PEDAL PROBLEM. *TR
