NOISE IN STEERING COLUMN AND TOO MUCH PLAY IN STEERING. REPLACED INTERMEDIATE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT. MAJOR ISSUE AVERTED SINCE MY MECHANIC PICKED UP ON THE ISSUE. SIGNIFICANT AUTOMOBILE PART, SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED. TOYOTA HAS A SERVICE BULLETIN BUT NOT A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. *TR
THE VEHICLE'S REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER, WHICH I BELIEVE IS A REQUIRED SAFETY ITEM IN NJ, DOES NOT WORK. PER TOYOTA, ENTIRE CONVERTIBLE TOP MUST BE REPLACED TO REPAIR WINDOW, AND THE NEW DEFROSTER DOES NOT WORK EITHER. TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW AND REFUSES TO REPLACE THE TOP UNDER WARRANTY OR REPAIR THE WINDOW SO THAT THE DEFROSTER WORKS. THIS PROBLEM WITH THE SOLARA CONVERTIBLE HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SPANNING MANY YEARS, STARTING WITH 2004 MODEL. *TR

THE 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY SE WAS DRIVEN ABOUT 25 MILES ON THE FREEWAY PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. I WAS PARKING IN A HOSPITAL PARKING GARAGE. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AS I WAS PARKING. THE CAR WAS ABOUT 3 FEET FROM A CONCRETE WALL, THEN THE CAR ACCELERATED FORWARD. THE CAR CRASHED, RUINED THE BUMPER AND OTHER PARTS BENEATH THE FIBERGLASS. I HAD A LARGE BRUISE FROM THE SEATBELT AND MY 6 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER WAS SCREAMING IN THE BACK SEAT. I GOT US OUT OF THE CAR QUICKLY, THE CAR HOWEVER WAS STILL TRYING THE GO FORWARD INTO THE WALL SINCE IT WAS STILL IN DRIVE. I GOT BACK IN AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. THE POLICE WOULD NOT COME AND FILE A REPORT SINCE IT WAS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY, SO WE FILED A REPORT WITH THE HOSPITAL'S BUILDING SECURITY. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A TOYOTA COLLISION SHOP AND STILL REMAINS THERE TODAY. WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR TOYOTA TO COME OUT AND "INSPECT" THE CAR AND WE CANNOT MOVE OR FIX THE CAR UNTIL THEY HAVE THEIR INSPECTION. THIS WAS ABOUT A MONTH AGO. WE HAVE BEEN GETTING NOTHING BUT THE RUN AROUND FROM TOYOTA BOTH AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE BOUGHT THE CAR AND FROM THE NATIONAL CORPORATION OF TOYOTA. WE WILL BE SEEKING A LAWYER. *TR
I PURCHASED MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY IN FEB. '04. FROM THE DAY I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT, THE CAR SURGES AS YOU BEGIN TO ACCELERATE. I RETURNED IT FOR REPAIR AND THE TECHNICIANS COULD NOT FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. IT HAS BEEN A CONTINUAL PROBLEM AND STILL OCCURS DAILY. IN DEC. 2004 AS I WAS PARKING MY CAR AT THE HOTEL WHERE I WORK THE CAR SURGED, JUMPED THE CURB AND DROVE INTO A HOTEL ROOM CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING AND THE CAR. TODAY IS 3/23/10 AND ON THE WAY TO WORK THIS MORNING IT SURGED TWICE.
TOYOTA CAMRY 2004 GOT CAUGHT ON FIRE I DROVE MY TOYOTA CAMRY 2004 THE OTHER DAY AND SUDDENLY THE ABS SYSTEM WAS TRIGGERED. ENGINE DIED. WHEN I CRANKED IT BACK UP AGAIN, SMOKES STARTED COMING OUT. I CHANGED MY OIL REGULARLY. THE LAST ONE WAS A WEEK BEFORE AT VALVOLINE (THEY CHECKED ALL FLUIDS) TOYOTA RAN AN INVESTIGATION AND THIS IS WHAT THEY MADE UP: "SERPENTINE BELT IS FAULTY, CONTINUED TO BE OPERATED, PRESSURE IN RADIATOR CAUSED IT TO BURST AND SPRAYED COOLANT ONTO THE BATTERY AND FUSE BOX AND RELAY PANEL WHICH LED TO A SHORT CIRCUIT" I TALKED TO A NICE SERVICE TECHNICIAN AT TOYOTA AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT MIGHT BE SOMETHING THAT THEY MADE UP TO GET AWAY IT. HE EXPLAINED TO ME HOW THAT WASN'T TOO LIKELY TO HAPPEN TOYOTA TOLD ME THAT THEY'LL CALL ME BEFORE INSPECTING THE CAR. THEY NEVER DID . THEY SENT ME A LETTER, WHICH ARRIVED A DAY AFTER MY VEHICLE IS SUPPOSED TO BE TOWED FROM THE DEALER (ON FRIDAY). I HAD TO WAIT TILL MONDAY TO TOW IT AWAY AND THEY CHARGED ME WEEKENDS STORAGE FEE ($25 A DAY) I PLANNED TO JUST DONATE THE CAR AND IT WILL USUALLY TAKES 2-3 DAYS. I THOUGHT I'LL DO THAT BY THE TIME THEY ARE READY TO INSPECT MY CAR. I CALLED TOYOTA EARLIER AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD CALL ME BACK (2 DAYS - EVEN AFTER INSPECTION). AGAIN, THAT NEVER HAPPENED TILL NOW THE WHOLE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS BURNED UP. MOST STUFFS MELTED, BUT I'M SURPRISED THEY CAN CONCLUDE THAT IT'S THE SERPENTINE BELT. YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT MY VEHICLE TO BELIEVE. EVERYTHING THERE MELTED AND TURNED BLACK BEFORE FIREMAN CAME (HUGE FIRE). I WENT TO CHECK AND RETRIEVE THE BELT AND IT LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE CUT IT DELIBERATELY. I EVEN HAD HARD TIME OPENING THE HOOD BECAUSE THEY DAMAGED IT..... DO YOU GUYS THINK THIS IS A FOUL PLAY? I GOT NO FULL COVERAGE ON THE CAR. I'M PRETTY MUCH BROKE NOW....AND THEY SORTA PUSH ME TO GET RID OF MY CAR THEY SAID THEY'LL CALL ME TO ARRANGE A MEETING FOR INSPECTION. THEY NEVER DID AND INSPECTED MY CAR ANYWAY THEY CUT SOME STUFFS LIKE SERPENTINE BELT FROM MY ENGINE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT OPERATE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. HE CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND ADVISED HIM TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED INTO THE DEALER. THEY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD AN ELECTRICAL SHORT GOING TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 103000.
MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY LE HAD RAPIDLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN SHORTLY AFTER PLACING GEAR SELECTOR IN PARK. I WAS SLOWLY BACKING UP MY CAMRY LE ON AN INCLINE. I HAD MY LEFT FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND LIGHTLY TOUCHED THE GAS PEDAL WITH MY RIGHT FOOT. (N.B. I USED BOTH FEET, BECAUSE ON TWO OCCASIONS WHILE BACKING UP WITH MY BODY TURNED, MY RIGHT FOOT TWISTED AND GOT CAUGHT BETWEEN THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS--WHICH ARE THE SAME HEIGHT.) I BARELY GOT A FEW FEET BEFORE I HEARD AN ODD NOISE--A SOUND THAT I CAN NEITHER REMEMBER OR DESCRIBE --SINCE I HAVE NO FRAME OF REFERENCE FOR THIS SOUND. I BELIEVE THE CAR WAS VIBRATING WHEN THIS SOUND OCCURRED. I PUT MY RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND MOVED THE GEAR SELECTOR TO THE PARK POSITION. WITHIN ABOUT 3 SECONDS THE ENGINE RACED SO HIGH--AS IF THE CAR WAS TRAVELING 120 MILES +. I HAVE NEVER HEARD AN ENGINE ACCELERATE AS RAPIDLY AND AS HIGH AS THIS. IT WAS AS IF ROCKET FUEL WAS SUDDENLY ADDED TO THE FUEL LINE. IF THIS VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE, I WOULD HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO STOP. MY RELATIVE IS PROFICIENT IN BOTH COMPUTERS AND CARS. HE SUGGESTED THAT THERE COULD BE SEVERAL REASONS FOR THIS PROBLEM INCLUDING CORROSION ON COMPUTER PARTS, IC CHIPS NOT SEATED PROPERLY, PROBLEMS WITH THE WIRING HARNESS, AND THE LAST SUGGESTION, THAT THE ECM (CAR COMPUTER) GAVE THE WRONG COMMAND TO OPEN UP THE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO RACE. AFTER I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND BACK ON, THE CAR WORKED NORMAL--MY RELATIVE SAID THAT THE ECM COULD HAVE RESET ITSELF. EVEN IF TOYOTA COULD CLAIM THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN THE GAS PEDAL, ITS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT THERE IS A SENSOR BY GAS PEDAL (WIRES ATTACHED) WHICH I UNDERSTAND WOULD TELL THE ECM WHERE ITS [PEDAL] POSITION IS. SINCE THERE IS NO MECHANICAL LINKAGE (CABLE) THAT CONNECTS TO THE THROTTLE BODY--THE ACCELERATOR WOULD HAVE TO BE CONTROLLED ELECTRONICALLY. UPDATED 03/30/10.*JB THE CONSUMER WHAT HE EXPERIENCED COULD NEVER BE EXPLAINED AWAY AS A STICKY GAS PEDAL, FOOT ENTRAPMENT, A FLOOR MAT ISSUE, OR OPERATOR ERROR. THERE WERE 3 INCIDENTS OF UNWANTED ACCELERATION HE EXPERIENCED IN HIS VEHICLE. UPDATED 01/14/14
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. SHE STATED THAT WHILE SHE WAS PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVE WAY SHE NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE WILL NOT GO FASTER THAN 10MPH. SHE STARTED TO DRIVE, BUT ENDED UP PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT AND PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE DEFECT TO BE THE WIRELESS THROTTLE BODY. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 52,000.
2004 TOYOTA CAMRY GAS PEDAL STOPPED WORKING, THE CAR WENT TO IDLE AND WOULD NOT INCREASE RPM. NO CONSEQUENCES BECAUSE I WAS IN ISOLATED RURAL AREA. TURNED CAR OFF AND RESTARTED, IT WORKED AS NORMAL. *TR

WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH IN REVERSE OUT OF HER DRIVEWAY, THERE WAS A SUDDEN INCREASE IN ENGINE RPMS AND THE VEHICLE PROCEEDED TO ABNORMALLY ACCELERATE IN THE FORWARD POSITION. THE VEHICLE CRASHED THROUGH HER GARAGE DOOR AND CONTINUED TO IDLE. SHE WAS ABLE TO PUT THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL AND TURN THE VEHICLE OFF. THE CONTACT WAS UNINJURED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND WOULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 39,000.
SUDDEN ACCELERATION THAT SO FAR HAS BEEN CONTROLLED BY APPLYING THE BRAKES. THE SURGE IS SMALL BUT STILL NOTICEABLE. THIS HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES BUT I HAVE NOT COMPLAINED BEFORE AS I THOUGHT THE PROBLEMS WERE ONLY WITH THE 2007 AND UP MODELS AND FIGURED I WAS IMAGINING IT DO TO THE ALL OF THE RECENT RECALLS. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO NAVIGATE INTO A PARK SPACE, THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. HE WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AND PROCEEDED TO CRASH INTO AN EMBANKMENT. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 49000.
THE FRONT LEFT OF THE CAR WAS MAKING NOISE. WHEN I DRIVE, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VIBRATING WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKE. WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, THE STEERING WHEEL STOPPED WORKING. AS THE STEERING WHEEL DID NOT WORK, I TRIED TO STOPPED THE CAR BY PRESSING THE BRAKES, BUT THAT DID NOT STOP THE CAR. THE FRONT OF MY CAR HIT INTO THE CENTER DIVIDER ON THE FREEWAY AND THEN THE BACK OF MY CAR ALSO HIT THE DIVIDER. WHEN THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED I WAS BLOCKING 3 LANES ON A 5 LANE FREEWAY FACING TRAFFIC. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY EVEN THOUGH I WAS DRIVING 55 MPH. THE FRONT BUMPER COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE CAR. I SUFFERED WHIPLASH INCLUDING NECK AND SHOULDER PAINS. I JUST HAD MY CAR MAINTAINED ABOUT A MONTH AGO. *TR
CAR:2004 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE MODEL WHEN I DRIVE ON A CITY ROAD WITH POT HOLES/ROUGH SURFACE INTERSECTION MY BRAKES DOES NOT SEEMS TO EFFECTIVE. YOU ALMOST SEEMS TO FEELS ITS NOT GOING TO STOP, BUT WHEN YOU PUSH HARD AND KEEP IT EVENTUALLY STOP. OTHER WISE BRAKES PERFORM AS EXPECTED IN HIGHWAYS. *TR
ALTHOUGH MY TOYOTA XLE V6 IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL, I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY BRAKES SINCE 2004, THE YEAR OF MY CAMRY. WHEN I'M DRIVING SLOWLY, (APPROXIMATELY 15MPH) GOING OVER A BUMP AND I NEED TO BRAKE, MY BRAKES DO NOT RESPOND. I HAVE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKES WITH GREAT FORCE AND THE ANTI-LOCKS KICK IN. . I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF MY DEALER IN 2004. I WAS TOLD THEY COULD DO SOMETHING MINOR (OF WHICH I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND) BUT IT WOULD CONTINUE TO OCCUR. I HAVE BEEN UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE BRAKING ON THIS CAR FOR YEARS. THIS IS A CONTINUAL PROBLEM. ALTHOUGH THIS HAPPENS CONSTANTLY, IN ORDER TO PROCEED, I NEED TO INPUT A DATE. *TR
OUR 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY STALLED YESTERDAY AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. WE ARE TOLD THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR IS DEFECTIVE AND MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST TO US OF $600. NHTSA SHOULD INVESTIGATE WHETHER ALL TOYOTA ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLIES AND ELECTRONICS SINCE 2001 SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR

TL* CONTACT OWNED A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED HE WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 5MPH WHEN HE WAS TURNING IN A PARKING LOT TRYING TO PARK. THE VEHICLE TOOK OFF AND HE HIT A STORE FRONT WHICH WAS 7 FEET FROM THE PARKING LOT. THE CONTACT STATED HE DOES NOT REMEMBER MUCH, BUT HE HAD GLASS SHATTER ALL OVER HIM. HE WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL BUT WAS NOT INJURED AT ALL. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. CONSUMER STATES THROTTLE BODY AND GAS PEDAL MALFUNCTIONING. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED HE STARTED THE VEHICLE AND WHEN HE PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO LEAVE HIS DRIVEWAY, NOTHING HAPPENED. MEANING, THE GAS PEDAL DID NOT WORK, BUT RATHER HE SIMPLY COASTED. HE SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTED IT, BUT RECEIVED THE SAME RESULTS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND IT STAYED ON FOR SOME TIME AFTER THE SECOND EFFORT. LATER THAT DAY, THE VEHICLE DROVE FINE WITH NO PROBLEMS. THE CONSUMER WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE THROTTLE CIRCUIT. *JB
MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY FAILS TO DECELERATE WHEN I TAKE MY FOOT OFF OF THE GAS PEDDLE. IT HAS BEHAVED THIS WAY SINCE I BOUGHT IT IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR. IT FRIGHTENS ME IN LIEU OF THE RECALLS MADE ON TOYOTA VEHICLES. NOW MY 'NEEDS MAINTENANCE' LIGHT IS ON IN THE DASH. *TR
MY DAUGHTER'S 2004 CAMRY ACCELERATED AS SHE WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE, JUMPED THE CONCRETE BERM, AND SMASHED INTO THE CONCRETE WALL. SHE HAD HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND PUMPED ONCE AS SHE SUSPECTED BRAKE FAILURE, BUT IT ONLY SPED UP. THE CAR WAS TOTALED, BUT MY TWO DAUGHTERS WERE UNHARMED EXCEPT FOR MINOR ACHES AND BRUISING AND WERE A BIT SHAKEN UP. INSURANCE ADJUSTER AND FORD DEALER WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AT THE SHOP. A POLICE REPORT WAS MADE. *TR
MY WIFE'S 2004 CAMRY HESITATES ON ACCELERATION AT TIMES. THERE IS A BRIEF, FEW-SECOND HESITATION, FOLLOWED BY A SURGE WHERE THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHES FORWARD. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED FREQUENTLY WHENEVER EITHER OF US DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND EVER SINCE SHE FIRST PURCHASED IT (USED) ABOUT A YEAR AGO. WE THOUGHT IT MAY HAVE BEEN TRANSMISSION-RELATED, BUT TOYOTA HAS INSPECTED THE VEHICLE A COUPLE TIMES TO NO AVAIL AND HAS DENIED ANY PROBLEM. *TR
2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. CONSUMER STATES THE ENGINE SURGED AND THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD AS HE WAS PARKING. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE RAN OVER THE CURB, ACROSS THE SIDEWALK AND STRUCK AND DAMAGED A COLUMN ON THE FRONT OF A BUILDING. THE VEHICLE SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT FRONT RESULTING IN A REPAIR BILL IN EXCESS OF $4,000. ON A PREVIOUS OCCASION WHEN EXITING THE FREEWAY AND MAKING A RIGHT TURN, THE ENGINE SURGED BETWEEN GEARS BUT WHEN IT ENGAGED, THE CONSUMER DID NOT NOTICE A PROBLEM. SIX MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED. *JB
I HAVE THE SAME BRAKING PROBLEM WITH MY 2004 TOYOTA SOLARA THAT HAS BEEN RECENTLY DESCRIBED IN THE 2010 PRIUS. I FIRST REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO KERRY TOYOTA IN COVINGTON, KENTUCKY ON OCTOBER 11, 2005. I HAVE A COPY OF THE SERVICE REPORT INCLUDING TOYOTA'S CLAIM THAT THE BRAKES WERE WORKING PROPERLY. I HAVE DISCUSSED THE PROBLEM WITH EVERY TOYOTA DEALER WHO HAS WORKED ON THE CAR SINCE I HAVE OWNED IT. NONE HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM AND AS A FEMALE, I DON'T REALLY FEEL LIKE I HAVE BEEN TAKEN SERIOUSLY. I AM AN EXCELLENT DRIVER WITH NO ACCIDENTS IN 30 YEARS OF DRIVING. MOST RECENTLY, ON THIS PAST MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, AS I DROVE TO WORK, THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME PUT ON BRAKES SUDDENLY. WHEN I APPLIED MY BRAKES, I HIT A POT HOLE AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME. THE BRAKE PEDAL SOFTENED AND THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN AT ALL. I PUMPED THE BRAKES AND THIS TIME THE BRAKES ENGAGED AND THE CAR SLOWED. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN COMPLETELY CONSISTENT. SUDDEN BRAKING, A BUMPY ROAD OR LOOSE TRACTION, ABS SEEMS TO ENGAGE, ABSOLUTELY NO BRAKES. THE REPAIRS HAVE NOT BEEN COMPLETED DUE TO THE AVAILABILITY OF PARTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CRASH WAS DUE TO RAPID ACCELERATION.

WHILE DRIVING MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY (ABOUT 83,000 MILES ON IT), THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT, THE CAR REQUIRED GREAT FORCE TO STEER, AND "STEAM" WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I SLOWLY PULLED TO THE CURB TO LOOK UNDER THE HOOD AND THEN DROVE ABOUT A QUARTER MILE (WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY) TO A NEARBY TOYOTA DEALER. THE FOLLOWING DAY I WAS INFORMED THAT AN ALTERNATOR BOLT HAD "BACKED OUT." THIS CAUSED THE ALTERNATOR TO LOOSEN WHICH RELEASED THE SERPENTINE BELT. AS A RESULT THE WATER PUMP AND ALTERNATOR WERE DAMAGED AND COOLANT SPRAYED OVER THE ENGINE. TOYOTA WANTED ABOUT $1100 TO REPAIR ALL OF THE DAMAGE. I COMPLAINED AND THE COST WAS REDUCED BY THE PRICE OF A RECONDITIONED ALTERNATOR, I.E., $400. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THEY RECENTLY HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM. MY CAR HAD BEEN IN FOR SERVICE TO THE SAME TOYOTA DEALER JUST 3 WEEKS EARLIER. HAD I BEEN DRIVING ON A FREEWAY (INSTEAD OF A LOCAL STREET WHERE I SLOWLY PULLED TO THE CURB), MY TOYOTA COULD HAVE BEEN STRUCK BY ANOTHER VEHICLE, SINCE I COULD HARDLY STEER THE CAR. I PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED A 2004 NEW CAMRY AT A CAR DEALERSHIP IN CALIFORNIA. AT 17,000 MILES I NOTICED A THUMPING SOUND AND VIBRATION IN THE STEERING COLUMN. I WAS INFORMED THAT THIS YEAR CAR WAS EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS AND THE STEERING COLUMN WAS FIXED. THE REPAIR WAS MADE UNDER WARRANTY. JUST RECENTLY AT 49, 000 MILES, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. I WAS TOLD THAT THE STEERING COULD HAVE GONE OUT ANY TIME AND I WOULD HAVE LOST COMPLETE CONTROL. I WAS AGAIN INFORMED THAT THE 2004 CAMRY'S HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THESE REPAIRS DONE UNDER WARRANTY. MICHAEL'S TOYOTA IN BELLEVUE HAS STATED THAT THEY "REPLACED" THE SENSOR LAST TIME IT FAILED BUT IT ONCE AGAIN HAS FAILED; WHICH MEANS THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. MICHAEL'S TOYOTA'S SERVICE MANAGER HAS STATED THAT THE LAST REPAIR WAS THE LAST ONE THEY WOULD ABSORB. I BELIEVE THIS AIRBAG SENSOR WAS NOT REPLACED AND REMAINS FAULTY; EITHER BY DESIGN OR IN THIS PARTICULAR ONE. I SLAMMED THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK , PULLED UP THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND THAT STOPPED THE CAR. MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE (6 CYLINDER) HAS A STICKING GAS PEDAL PROBLEM. WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STATIONARY POSITION, THE GAS PEDAL IS DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS FROM THE "UP" POSITION. IT TAKES A FAIR AMOUNT OF PRESSURE WHEN PRESSING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL TO GET IT TO RELEASE FROM THE STUCK POSITION AND ALLOW THE PEDAL TO FURTHER DEPRESS FOR PROPER ACCELERATION. WHEN THE GAS PEDAL FINALLY DOES RELEASE AFTER APPLYING PRESSURE, THE MOTOR HAS REVVED UP CAUSING THE CAR TO, IN ESSENCE, POP A WHEELIE, SPIN ITS WHEELS, AND ACCELERATES IN A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS MANNER. THIS TOYOTA MODEL HAS NOT YET BEEN INCLUDED IN THE CURRENT RECALL, BUT I AM CONCERNED THAT IT SHOULD BE RECALLED SINCE IT IS EXHIBITING SIMILAR SYMPTOMS AS THOSE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THIS PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH THE POWER DOOR ACTUATOR ON THE DRIVER DOOR. THE MALFUNCTION STARTED INTERMITTENTLY AT CERTAIN TEMPERATURES. THE DOOR LOCK ON DRIVER SIDE WOULD NOT WORK WHEN PRESSING THE REMOTE OR PRESSING THE POWER DOOR LOCK BUTTON ON DRIVER DOOR. AS THE PROBLEM PROGRESSED THE INTERIOR DOOR LOCK BUTTON AND LATCH STOPPED FUNCTIONING IN MANUAL MODE. NOT ALLOWING THE DRIVER TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE LOCK DOES NOT OPEN ANYMORE AND DOES NOT OVERRIDE THE MALFUNCTIONING DOOR ACTUATOR. AS A RESULT, SHOULD I NEED TO QUICKLY EGRESS THE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY SUCH AS A FIRE OR OTHERWISE I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO SO. THE ONLY WAY TO OPEN THE DOOR AT THIS TIME IS TO PRESS THE POWER DOOR LOCK BUTTON BACK AND FORTH UNTIL SOMETHING CATCHES ON, AND THE BUTTON OPENS. HOWEVER, THIS WILL LIKELY NOT WORK IN AN EMERGENCY. I'VE REQUESTED THAT TOYOTA REPLACE THE FAULTY PART, BUT WAS INFORMED THAT GIVEN THAT THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. I REQUESTED THAT THEY TAKE MY CASE TO SOUTHEASTERN TOYOTA UPPER MANAGEMENT TO MAKE A DECISION. ACCORDING TO THE TOYOTA DEALER I WAS AT, THE SERVICE MANAGER FOR THE ENTIRE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES DID NOT AGREE WITH MY COMPLAINT AND DID NOT THINK IT WAS WITHIN THEIR DUTIES TO REPLACE THE PART. MOVING THE TRANSMISSION LEVER FROM DRIVE TO PARK THE DOORS DID NOT AUTOMATICALLY UNLOCK. TURNING THE IGNITION KEY TO OFF POSITION WAS THE ONLY SOLUTION TO STOPPING THE RACING ENGINE. ON CHRISTMAS DAY, DECEMBER 25, 2009, I WAS DRIVING OUR 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY ON THE 880-N FREEWAY IN OAKLAND, EXITED THE FREEWAY, AND WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP AT THE FIRST INTERSECTION AFTER EXITING, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FORWARD. THIS WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. THE INCIDENT WAS ALSO NOT THE RESULT OF DRIVER ERROR ' MY RIGHT FOOT HIT THE BRAKES. THE WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS WERE GOOD. THE WEATHER WAS DRY AND PARTLY CLOUDY. THE ROADS WERE DRY. AFTER THE INCIDENT, I CONTACTED THE SAN BRUNO, CA BASED MELODY TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND A LOCAL INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. BOTH TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM UNDER SIMILAR DRIVING CONDITIONS BEFORE THEY COULD DO ANYTHING. WHILE THE INCIDENT HAS NOT REPEATED ITSELF, I AM CONCERNED THAT THE PROBLEM COULD POP UP AT ANY TIME. I BELIEVE TOYOTA SHOULD, AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE, INSPECT AND REPAIR MY VEHICLE SO THE BRAKES FUNCTION AS INTENDED. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY 2004 CAMRY VEHICLE AND BELIEVE OTHER 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY OWNERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCE. AS OF TODAY, I BELIEVE TOYOTA HAS ONLY PARTIALLY ADDRESSED THE SUDDEN, UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE AND I AM CALLING ON THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER MORE THOROUGHLY. I WOULD LIKE TOYOTA TO INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER AND BELIEVE THAT GOVERNMENT LEGISLATORS AND REGULATORS OUGHT TO PROD TOYOTA TO DO MORE. TOYOTA HAS STATED THAT IT DOES NOT BELIEVE ITS CURRENT RECALL SHOULD REACH BACK TO THE 2004 MODEL YEAR. I DISAGREE. I WOULD LIKE TOYOTA TO FIX THE DEFECT TO ENSURE THAT MY BRAKE SYSTEM FUNCTIONS PROPERLY. BEYOND SAFETY CONCERNS, I AM ALSO DISAPPOINTED THAT TOYOTA'S CAMRY TROUBLES HAVE CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT DECLINE IN THE VALUE OF MY CAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD EXHIBIT AN UNUSUAL NOISE WHEN ATTEMPTING A TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT REMAIN STRAIGHT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN, WHICH WAS A CONSTANT FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE STEERING COLUMN WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT HE WOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR PARTIAL REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 39,027.
