DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE APPLYING BRAKE PRESSURE AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY PULLED TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE BRAKING FROM A SPEED OF 25 MPH, THERE HAS BEEN A MOMENT OF RESISTANCE IN THE BRAKE PEDAL, THEN THE PEDAL DEPRESSES TO THE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHERE THE PROBLEM WAS DETERMINED TO BE A NORMAL OCCURRENCE WITH ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEMS IN THE NEWER MODELS.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY WHILE THE DRIVER'S FOOT WAS PLANTED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING PARKED WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE HIT A POLE AND STOPPED. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED ON 06/26/06 AND COULD NOT DETERMINE WHY THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED.
LTR FM (MA) RE TOYOTA BRAKING AND SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION, OWNER OF A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY LE. *TGW AS THE CONSUMER STARTED TO PARK, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. SHE TRIED TO BRAKE, BUT THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO A BUILDING. NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE STORE AS WELL AS THE VEHICLE. *JB
CONSUMER 2005 CAMRY HAS A PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. *TS THE CONSUMER STATED FROM A STOPPED POSITION, ABOUT 20% OF THE TIME , THE FIRST TWO TRANSMISSION SHIFTS WILL EXTEND BEYOND A NORMAL TIME PERIOD WHILE THE CAR'S ENGINE REVS TO ABOUT 3000 RPMS. AT TIMES, WHEN SLOWING TO ABOUT 10 TO 20 MPH AND THEN ACCELERATING, ABOUT 80% OF THE TIME THE TRANSMISSION WOULD HESITATE FOR 2 TO 3 SECONDS WHILE IT SELECTS A GEAR AND WILL THEN ENGAGE, SOMETIMES IN A HARSH MANNER DEPENDING UPON THE PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL. THERE WAS NO SPECIFIC TIME WHEN THE ERRATIC SHIFTS WOULD OCCUR. *JB
ACCELERATION HESITATION WHILE PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC OR MERGING INTO TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY. *TR
INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) DURING THE YEARS 2006-2007-2008 I LEASED AND DROVE A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY LE. SHORTLY AFTER I GOT THE CAR I NOTICED THE VEHICLE PULLED TO THE RIGHT AND I FELT AS THOUGH I HAD NO CONTROL DURING SPEEDS OF 50 MPH OR OVER. WHEN I REPORTED THIS TO THE SERVICE DEPT OF MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER DURING VISITS FOR OIL CHANGES, THEY TOOK THE CAR OUT, TEST DROVE IT AND TOLD ME THEY SAW NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I WAS CONVINCED THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE, BUT NO ONE BELIEVED ME. I HAVE SINCE TURNED IN THE CAMRY AT THE END OF THE LEASE DATE AND WAS VERY HAPPY TO DO SO. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH TOYOTA AND RELAYED THE ABOVE INFO RECENTLY. MY CONCERN IS THAT SOMETHING COULD BE WRONG WITH THE CAMRY AND THAT SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT BE DRIVING IT. I ASKED TOYOTA IF THEY COULD FIND OUT WHO OWNS THIS VEHICLE AND THEY SHOULD BE ALERTED. I NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT; I ONLY ALWAYS FELT SCARED TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ON ANY MAJOR HIGHWAY THAT WOULD REQUIRE ME TO TRAVEL AT SPEEDS HIGHER THAN 50 MPH. HOPEFULLY SOMEONE COULD FIND OUT WHERE THIS CAR IS NOW. VIN# [XXX] . *TR
I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK WHEN I NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD OF MY CAR. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER ON THE SERVICE ROAD TO THE MAJOR HIGHWAY I WAS ABOUT TO GET ON. UPON GETTING OUT OF MY CAR AND OPENING THE HOOD I WAS FACED WITH FLAMES. CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY AS WELL AS THE SAFETY OF PASSERS-BY, MY FIRST REACTION WAS TO TRY TO PUT OUT THIS FIRE. I RAN TO MY TRUNK, WHERE I ALWAYS KEEP A CASE OF BOTTLED WATER, AND TOOK APPROXIMATELY 8 WATER BOTTLES. I WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. I AM CERTAIN THAT, HAD I NOT BEEN ABLE TO PULL SAFELY OFF THE ROAD OR DID NOT HAVE THE CLEAR MIND TO TRY TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE, THE CAR WOULD'VE BEEN ENGULFED IN FLAMES AND TOTALED CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY TO ME AND POTENTIALLY THOSE CLOSE TO THE INCIDENT. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. I AM TOLD THAT THERE IS "SEVERE DAMAGE" BUT DO NOT HAVE ALL OF THE DETAILS YET. *NM
I WAS DRIVING AT 15 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED SUDDENLY, AND I REAR-ENDED IT. *NM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE TIRES HAD TO BE REPLACED EVERY 10,000 MILES. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A SERVICE STATION AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE STRUT BOLTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE STRUTS WERE REPLACED WITH A CAMBER BOLT KIT. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 31,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000. UPDATED 5/5/08 *CN
>RE: TOYOTA CAMRY ISSUES AUGUST 2005 I PURCHASED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY FROM BEAVERTON TOYOTA WITH ODOMETER READING OF 9 MILES. I DROVE WORKDAYS APPX 24 MI ROUNDTRIP. MARCH 20, 2006 (5300 MILEAGE) I COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP OF A RAW GAS SMELL THAT WAS IN MY GARAGE (WITH GAS FURNACE PRESENT) AND SO STRONG WHEN DRIVING, I ALMOST PASSED OUT AT THE WHEEL. I DROVE WITH WINDOWS DOWN. I INITIALLY THOUGHT I WAS INHALING EXHAUST FUMES FROM COMMUTER TRAFFIC. I ALSO COMPLAINED AT THAT TIME THAT MY ACCELERATOR "LURCHED" FROM A STOP. DIAGNOSIS & REPAIR: DEALERSHIP COULD NOT VERIFY MY "LURCH" BUT NOTICED A "SLIGHT HESITATION CAUSED BY THE FLY BY WIRE THROTTLE. THIS IS NORMAL. NO TSB'S." AS FOR THE RAW GAS ODOR. THERE WAS FLUID DRIPPING BEHIND THE RT FRONT WHEEL WITH THE TEXTURE OF "OIL" BUT FUEL DRIPPING FROM BEHIND THE FR TIRE, WHICH WAS "CURED" BY PUTTING IN A NEW INJECTOR. AUGUST 24, 2006 (7000 MILEAGE) I COMPLAINED THAT VEHICLE WAS "LEAKING OIL" AND AGAIN SMELLING OF RAW GAS. DIAGNOSIS & REPAIR: DEALERSHIP "VERIFIED RR STRUT IS LEAKING, THROUGH THE SEAL, REPLACED RR STRUT." NOTE: BOTH TIMES I WAS INSTRUCTED NOT TO DRIVE MY CAR INTO THEIR SERVICE AREA, BUT TO LEAVE MY CAR OUTSIDE. ALTHOUGH THE GAS FUME ISSUE WAS RESOLVED IT HAS ALWAYS JERKED OR LURCHED FROM A DEAD STOP. I HAVE JUST ADAPTED MY DRIVING TO ACCOMMODATE THIS. IN LIGHT OF THE CURRENT TOYOTA RECALL AND SITUATION (MY 05 CAMRY IS NOT ON THE LIST OF RECALLS TO MY KNOWLEDGE.) DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A COMPLETE LACK OF BRAKE PRESSURE WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AT 20 MPH. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS USED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE ENOUGH TO REACH A RESIDENCE SAFELY. FROM THERE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, THEREFORE NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. BRAKES TRAVELED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR IN ORDR TO ACTIVATE THE BRAKES. VEHICLE HAS BEEN TOWED TWICE TO THE DEALER FOR BRAKE FAILURE. VEHICLE WAS TEST AGAIN FOR BRAKE FAILURE ON MARCH 20, 2006 AND NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND. *AK
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 24 AND 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE, INTERMITTENTLY, LOST POWER THEN SLAMMED INTO GEAR. THE DEALERSHIP DID ACKNOWLEDGE THERE WAS A PROBLEM, BUT STATED INSTALLING A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD CEASE. UPDATED 03/28/06. *JB
I WAS SLOWLY TURNING LEFT INTO A PARKING SPACE AT ABOUT 3:30 P.M., WHEN MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY SUDDENLY, AND QUITE RAPIDLY, ACCELERATED WITHOUT ANY INPUT FROM ME. IT JUMPED A CURB, CROSSED A SIDEWALK, AND A TREE STOPPED THE CAR. IT FELT LIKE I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE CAR. ALSO, THE STEERING WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. SOMEHOW, I MANAGED TO STEER THE CAR AWAY FROM THE APARTMENT BUILDING AND MY NEIGHBOR GLASS SLIDER. THE CAR TRAVELED ABOUT 30 PLUS FEET IN ITS ACCELERATION, WHEN A TREE STOPPED IT. IT LEFT ABOUT 20 FEET OF SKID MARKS. I WAS NOT HURT IN THE CRASH. THE CAR SUSTAINED DAMAGE, MAINLY TO THE FRONT BUMPER, COOLANT SYSTEM, AND HOOD, FOR APPROXIMATELY $5,400. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA CORPORATION, TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA, AND THEY INVESTIGATED THE CAR. THEY REPORTED THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR, AND THERE WERE NO DESIGN FAULTS. THE TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I HAD BOUGHT THE CAMRY ADDITIONALLY TESTED THE CAR COMPUTERS, AND ALSO CALLED IN A TOYOTA FACTORY REPRESENTATIVE TO TEST THE CAR. THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I SOLD THE CAMRY BACK TO THIS DEALER. THE CAR HAD ABOUT 5,400 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH. THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING WELL UNTIL THIS SUDDEN, UNEXPLAINED ACCELERATION THAT RESULTED IN A CRASH. *JB
WHEN THE CAR WAS ONLY SIX MONTHS OLD, THE POWER STEERING STARTED TO MAKE NOISE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE POWER STEERING PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED, BUT THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO ORDER THE PART. SO, I HAD TO MAKE ANOTHER TRIP TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE WORK DONE (UNDER WARRANTY). AFTER THE REPAIR THE NOISE STOPPED, BUT THE STEERING STILL DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT TO ME. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY DROVE THE CAR AND INSPECTED THE STEERING SYSTEM AND TOLD ME EVERYTHING LOOKED FINE. NONETHELESS, I AM QUITE SURE THE STEERING IS DIFFERENT THAN WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR. SOMETIMES THE STEERING SEEMS TO CATCH AND I FEEL LIKE I DON'T HAVE GOOD CONTROL, PARTICULARLY DURING A WIDE LEFT TURN THROUGH A LARGE INTERSECTION. *JB
THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP TO ODI NO. 10172668 ON THE STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT. WHEN THE PROBLEM CONTINUED AND THE DEALER COULDN'T DIAGNOSE IT, I COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA CORP. THE DEALER REVISITED THE PROBLEM AND REPLACED THE STEERING RACK (UNDER WARRANTY). THE CAR DRIVES GREAT AGAIN. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH THERE WAS A HEAD ON COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE TRAVELING 20 MPH. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. SEAT BELTS WERE IN USE HOWEVER; SERIOUS HEAD AND NECK INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AT THE SCENE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH WITH HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN BETWEEN 70 AND 80 MPH. HE THEN APPLIED A LOT OF PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL WHICH ONLY FUNCTIONED WHEN THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL GEAR. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE SINCE THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE WHICH OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY 10 TIMES. PREVIOUSLY THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS REPAIRED WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5311 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21825. 2005 CAMRY PURCHASED USED AS A PROGRAM CAR IN NOV 2005 WITH 12K MILES ON IT. WHEN STARTING UP VEHICLE, THEN DRIVING AT LESS THAN 10 MPH IN REVERSE (TO BACK UP OUT OF A DRIVEWAY OR PARKING SPACE), APPLYING THE BRAKE AND THEN PUTTING CAR INTO DRIVE, THE CAR WILL ACCELERATE INTERMITTENTLY ON ITS OWN BEFORE DRIVER DEPRESSES THE GAS PEDAL. DRIVER ALWAYS HAS HAD TO CONTINUE TO APPLY THE BRAKE FOR SEFVERAL SECONDS, TO BE CERTAIN THE VEHICLE WILL NOT SURGE FORWARD, ESP IF APPROACHING A CORNER LESS THAN 100 FT AWAY. THE DEALER WAS INFORMED OF THIS PHENOMENA IN EARLY 2006, WHILE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. DEALER EXAMINED THE VEHICLE BUT COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. OWNER HAS "LEARNED TO LIVE WITH" THE SAFETY DEFECT. DRIVER NEVER KNOWS WHEN EVENT WILL HAPPEN. MOST RECENT OCCURENCE WAS 4/10/16. NO ONE BUT OWNER IS ALLOWED TO DRIVE THE CAR. VEHICLE NOW HAS 120K MILES ON IT, AND HAS OTHERWISE BEEN RELIABLE.
I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY THAT I BOUGHT NEW IN 9/05 THAT I DRIVE FOR WORK & HAVE PUT APX 21000 MILES ON TO DATE. I HAVE ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS HAD TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT GOODYEAR TIRES (INTEGRITY) DUE TO HOLES IN THE SIDEWALLS ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRES. I MAY NOW HAVE TO REPLACE A FIFTH, I HAVE A TIRE WHICH IS NOW LEAKING AIR & WILL RETURN TO GOODYEAR ON 1/5. I DO DRIVE FOR WORK & I AM CAREFUL, BECAUSE IF I AM NOT WORKING, I AM NOT MAKING ANY MONEY, DOWN TIME IS COSTLY. I FEEL THERE MAY BE A WEAKNESS DEFECT IN THE SIDEWALLS THAT NEEDS FURTHER ATTENTION. *JB
I HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM THAT I'M READING ABOUT IN THE TOYOTA PRIUS (BRIEF BRAKE FAILURE AT SLOW SPEEDS ON WET OR UNEVEN SURFACES) IN A 2005 CAMRY. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, WHO WOULD NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM, TELLING ME THAT THE BRAKES "CONFORMED TO STANDARDS." SO I DON'T BELIEVE ANY TALK FROM TOYOTA THAT THE PROBLEM IS SOME KIND OF DESIGN FLAW LIMITED TO THE PRIUS. *TR
WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BUY THIS CAR THEY TOLD ME THAT THE TOTAL COST FOR THE CAR WOULD BE AROUND SIXTEEN THOUSAND. HOWEVER THE REAL TOTAL WAS AROUND THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. WHEN I NOTICE IT WAS TOO LATE I HAD ALREADY SIGN. AT THAT MOMENT I TRIED TO FIX THAT PROBLEM WITH THE DEALERSHIP BUT THEY COMPLETELY IGNORE ME. AND JUST TO MAKE THINGS WORST THE CAR DOESN'T FUNCTION RIGHT; OUT OF NO WHERE IT JUST TURNS OFF. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO THE DEALERSHIP DOES NOT WANT TO COOPERATE. I WANT TO CANCEL THE PURCHASE OF THIS CAR. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PULL IN A PARKING SPACE AT 2 MPH, THE VEHICLE SURGED AND SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WENT THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AND OVER A PUBLIC SIDEWALK BEFORE CRASHING INTO A FIRE HYDRANT. THE CONTACT AND PASSENGER WERE WEARING SAFETY RESTRAINTS. THE VEHICLE IMPACTED THE FIRE HYDRANT WITH SUCH FORCE THAT THE FIRE HYDRANT WAS EXTRACTED 3 FEET ABOVE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WERE DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WAS PERFORMED. THE LOCAL SERVICE DEALER COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT; HOWEVER THE DEALER ADDITIONAL TESTING WILL BE PERFORMED BEFORE THE VEHICLE IS REPAIRED. THE POLICE FILED A REPORT AT THE SCENE AND THE CONTACT'S INSURANCE COMPANY ALSO FILED A REPORT. THERE WAS ADDITIONAL PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE SIDEWALK, FIRE HYDRANT AND A CHILDREN'S MUSEUM THAT WAS FLOODED BY THE WATER FROM THE FIRE HYDRANT. *NM UPDATED 2/27/2006 - THE AIR BAGS ALSO FAILED TO DEPLOY. *NM
BRIDGESTONE TURANZA P215/55R/17/ M+S/ EL4PBZ TOURING TIRE TIRE DEVELOPED LATERAL CRACK NEAR JOINT SEAM. AIR PRESSURE ESCAPED IMMEDIATELY. *NM
2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. CONSUMER SENT ADDITIONAL CORRESPONDENCE RELATED TO TRANSMISSION AND DRIVER SIDE WINDOW ISSUES. NOTE CONSUMER HAS PREVIOUS CORRESPONDENCE IN THE SYSTEM UNDER ODI 10186844 *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE TEST DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITH THE TECHNICIAN, THE TRANSMISSION HESITATED ON ACCELERATION AND SLIPPED A FEW TIMES. AFTER WAITING FOR THE VEHICLE FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES, THE TECHNICIAN COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO EXIT THE SNOW COVERED DRIVEWAY AT A LOW SPEED, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE BRAKES LOCKED UP CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SKID OUT OF CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WAS RECOVERED AND TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, AN ITEM FLEW OUT OF A TRUCK WHILE IN MOTION. THE CONTACT MOVED INTO THE RIGHT LANE SAFELY, THEN SAFELY WENT OVER BACK TO THE LEFT LANE. THE CONTACT THEN MANEUVERED THE STEERING WHEEL SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT, AND THE STEERING WHEEL SPIN OUT OF CONTROL. EVER SINCE THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED IT HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY A SUPER SENSITIVE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. TOYOTA REPORTED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG. WE SOLD THE CAR BACK TO TOYOTA AT A $10,000 LOSS. AFTER A MONTH, THE DRIVER DEVELOPED A SEVERE RIGHT HIP PAIN, ATTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT BY TWO DOCTORS. AFTER PUSHING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, I WAS ABLE TO STEER AWAY FROM OTHER CARS AND WAS FINALLY ABLE TO STOP THE CAR ONLY BY USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE.
