BACK DOOR AJAR, INTERIOR LIGHT AND A BING SOUND COME ON WHEN I TURN LEFT
THE REAR HATCH GIVES A CHIME AND SAYS IT IS OPEN WHEN IT IS CLOSED. THIS IS A 2010 HIGHLANDER AND I SEE THAT THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ONLINE. THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW IF IT IS ACTUALLY OPEN OR IF IT ACTUALLY CLOSED BUT JUST CHIMING FOR NO REASON. IT HAPPENS VERY INTERMITTENTLY, BUT OFTEN WHEN GOING OVER A BUMP BUT OTHER TIMES THERE IS NO PATTERN, IT JUST HAPPENS SOMETIMES AND NOT OTHERS. IT HAPPENS WHEN STATIONARY AND WHEN MOVING. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AT LEAST.
WHILE DRIVING AND MAKING A RIGHT TURN THE RED DOOR INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS UP,THE CAR CHIMES AND THE INTERIOR CEILING LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF.
FALSE BACK DOOR AJAR WARNING. SAFETY CONCERN
POOR INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY! POPPING NOISE WITH CLUNKING FEEL IN STEERING WHEEL WHEN TURNING AT SLOW SPEEDS AND HITTING BUMPS. BEGAN AROUND 60,000 MILES AND HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE (NOW AT ABOUT 102,000 MILES) TOOK IN AT ONSET AND TOLD IT'S THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY. AS IT'S GETTING WORSE, IT'S STARTING TO FEEL VERY UNSAFE. THIS LOOKS TO BE A VERY FREQUENT ISSUE WHEN LOOKING INTO IT ONLINE. DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS NOT A RECALL! MY FAMILY IS TRUSTING TOYOTA AND NHTSA TO MAKE CORRECT DECISIONS FOR OUR SAFETY!
THE REAR LATCH ON THIS VEHICLE FAILED. IT COST $600 TO REPAIR
2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER REAR LATCH WAS DEFECTIVE. INSIDE LIGHTS KEPT GOING ON AND CHIMED. LATCH REPLACEMENT COST $601
MY FAMILY WAS INVOLVED IN A MULTI CAR ACCIDENT WHERE WE WERE STRUCK FROM BEHIND AND DRIVEN INTO THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF US (FROM A NEAR STOPPED POSITION). THE FORCE OF IMPACT ON THE FRONT BUMPER WAS HARD ENOUGH TO DRIVE THE TRAILER HITCH OF THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF US THROUGH THE LICENSE PLATE ON THE FRONT BUMPER. THE BUMPER AND GRILL WERE SEVERELY DAMAGES BUT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DRIVER WAS TAKEN TO ER FOR HEAD/NECK INJURIES WHICH WERE DEEMED TO BE MINOR.

I ALMOST GOT IN TO AN ACCIDENT ON 5/11/2018 DUE TO THE ABS SYSTEM NOT STOPPING THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING IN I-95. I GOT A WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH AS I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKES, LATER THE CAR DID NOT WANTED TO STOP, BUT IT DID NOT PREVENT ME FROM HITTING THE OTHER CAR. I PRESS ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR. LATER, I TOOK THE CAR TO GET DIAGNOSE AND PUT ERROR CODES C1391, ABS ACCUMULATOR LEAK OR MALFUNCTION. CONTACTED DELRAY TOYOTA IN DELRAY BEACH, FL AND THEY DENY TO DO A RECALL WHEN THERE IS AN EXTENTED WARRANTY RECALL ON CAMRY AND PRIUS MODEL LINE FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. CALLED TOYOTA CORP. AND THEY ARE DENYING TO DO ANYTHING TO FIX THE SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. THEY STATED THAT SINCE THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH BUYERS FOR THIS MODEL, THEY WILL NOT COVER OR MAKE A RECALL ON SAFETY FOR THE PUBLIC. I HAVE FOUND OVER ALL THE INTERNET COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. I AM LOOKING FOR A RESOLUTION. A PICTURE OF THE ERRORS CODES ON THE VEHICLE IS INCLUDED ON THE COMPLAINT.
REAR HATCH SENSOR AJAR WHENEVER THE WINDOWS ARE OPEN AND CAR EXCEEDS 30 MPH. WINDOWS MUST REMAIN CLOSE FOR THE SENSOR CHIME AND ACTIVATION TO CEASE. SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR HATCH SENSOR. THE CAR HAS BEEN OWNED FOR 8 YEARS AND HAS 77000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. NO ACCIDENTS.
THE DOOR SENSOR IS FAULTY. ITS COMES ON, THE WARNING SOUND DINGS AND LIGHT ON CONTROL PANEL LIGHTS UP SAYING THAT A DOOR IS AJAR. IT HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING, AND NONE OF THE DOORS ARE OPEN. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT HAPPENS SO FREQUENTLY THAT IF THE DOOR IS ACTUALLY OPENED YOU WOULD NOT KNOW SINCE IT GIVES FALSE ALARMS. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND MANY OTHERS WITH THIS COMPLAINT, AND FEEL THAT TOYOTA SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL.
FAILURE OF TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID. SOLUTION TORQUE CONVERTER REPLACEMENT. ~80,000 MILES ON TOYOTA U760E 6-SPEED TRANSMISSION. SAME TRANSMISSION USED IN TOYOTA CAMRY (U760E) WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM - ZE5. MANUFACTURER WILL NOT COVER ANY COST OF THIS TRANSMISSION FAILURE.
WHEN WE OPEN A WINDOW OR THE SUNROOF THE DOOR AJAR SIGN COMES ON AND STARTS TO BEEP ALSO THE INTERIOR LIGHT COMES ON. SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS WHEN WE TURN A CORNER OR HIT A BUMP JUST RIGHT. I AM AFRAID OF SOMETHING SHORTING OUT AND STARTING A FIRE! ALSO THE FRONT HEAD LIGHTS KEEP BURNING OUT WE HAVE TO REPLACE THEM AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. THE HIGHLANDER RUNS GREAT BUT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS SCARE ME. TOYOTA REALLY NEEDS TO RECALL AND FIX THIS PROBLEM.THE PROBLEM WITH THE DOOR OPEN ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN WE ARE DRIVING. THE PROBLELM HAPPENS EVERY TIME WE DRIVE THE CAR.
REAR WHEEL HUBS. I REPLACED THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL HUB AT ABOUT 6500 MILES AND 92000 MILES. I REPLACED THE LEFT REAR WHEEL HUB AT ABOUT 85000 MILES. IS THERE AN ISSUE WITH THESE ITEMS WEARING OUT PREMATURELY? I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER 50 YEAR AND HAVE NEVER HAD AN ISSUE LIKE THIS.
IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS, MY DOOR AJAR LIGHT AND DOOR CHIME HAVE BEEN INTERMITTENTLY COMING ON WHEN TURNING EITHER DIRECTION. ALL DOORS ARE CLOSED, AND STILL THE LIGHTS COME ON AND CHIME. THIS IS CAUSING ME CONCERN AS I HAVE A YOUNG CHILD AND AM UNAWARE OF WHETHER DOORS ARE TRULY CLOSED PROPERLY. PLEASE OPEN AN INVESTIGATION AS THIS IS NOT THE ONLY COMPLAINT REGARDING THIS MATTER.
STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH THE BRAKE APPLIED, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV UNCONTROLLED AND BEGAN TO MOVE FORWARD TOWARDS THE CAR AHEAD OF US, EVEN WITH THE BRAKE FULLY APPLIED. TO STOP THE PROBLEM, THE TRANSMISSION WAS SHIFTED TO PARK AND IGNITION TURNED OFF.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A SUSPENSION FAILURE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE THAT WAS PROGRESSING. THE FIRST DEALER (LOMBARD TOYOTA, 725 ROOSEVELT RD, LOMBARD, IL 60148, (855) 890-2899) PROVIDED AN ALIGNMENT AND DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUSPENSION ARM SEIZED, AND THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM AND TOE ADJUST CAM SUB-ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SECOND DEALER (ST CHARLES TOYOTA, 2651 E MAIN ST, ST CHARLES, IL 60174, (630) 584-6655) DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR ALIGNMENT WAS SLIGHTLY OFF AND THAT THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT ISSUED ANY RECALLS TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 51,442.
DEFECTIVE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. CLUNKING, ETC. SEEMS DANGEROUS, NO RECALL.... THIS IS ONE COMPLAINT TO ADD TO THE NUMEROUS OTHERS. TOYOTA, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS?
THE REAR LIFTGATE DOOR AJAR KEEPS GOING OF EVERY TIME I TURN OR HIT A BUMP. WHEN THIS WARNING KEEPS GOING OF I DO NOT KNOW IF ANY OTHER DOOR IS OPEN AND RISK ONE OF MY CHILDREN FALLING OUT OF THE CAR WHEN DRIVING AND RISKING DEATH OR INJURY. THE ONLY REASON I KNOW IT IS THE REAR LIFTGATE IS THAT I FOUND THIS ISSUE ALL OVER THE INTERNET AND FOUND YOUTUBE VIDEOS ON THE ISSUE
STEERING HAS POPPING AND CLICKING WHEN TURNING FROM A STOPPED POSITION. THE STEERING HAS ALWAYS SOUNDED LIKE IT'S STRAINING/HARD TO TURN. POPPING GETS WORSE AND MORE FREQUENTLY. IT SHOULD BE RECALLED LIKE IT HAS ON OTHER TOYOTA MODELS THAT HAVE RESULTED IN STEERING FAILURE. INTERMEDIATE SHAFT IS FAULTY ON MANY TOYOTA HIGHLANDERS BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. FOR 2010 MODEL YEAR.
BACK DOOR STATES THAT IT IS AJAR EVEN WHEN IT IS COMPLETELY CLOSED. THIS SEEMS TO BE SAFETY ISSUE TO ME AND TOYOTA SHOULD CHECK AND ISSUE AN RECALL.
I WAS DRIVING TO PICK UP MY SON WHEN A BRAKE MALFUNCTION WARNING LIGHT CAME ON INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH ABS SYSTEM. AFTER PICKING UP MY SON I WENT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER AND THE FOUND THE PROBLEM WAS GIVEN BY CODE C1391, A BRAKE ACCUMULATOR VACUUM LEAK. WAS TOLD VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITHOUT REPAIR, INTERNAL PRESSURE LOSS COULD PREVENT CAR FROM STOPPING IN A PANIC SITUATION. ALTHOUGH IT APPEARS THIS IS COVERED BY WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR SOME MODEL YEARS OF HIGHLANDER, CAMRY AND PRIUS, TOYOTA WOULD NOT EXTEND SAME COURTESY TO ME, NOR WAS DEALER ABLE TO OFFER ME A GOODWILL ADJUSTMENT. PUMP ASSEMBLY AND ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY PARTS AND REPAIR COST ABOUT $5300.00. VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW FROM THE DEALER, HAD ALL RECOMMENDED AND NECESSARY MAINTENANCE AT DEALER ON DEALER SCHEDULE. *BF *TR
WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL A CLICKING NOISE IS HEARD. THERE IS A TSB OUT ON THIS PROBLEM WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION A NOISE WAS HEARD, AND A LOUD HUMMING NOISE IS COMING FROM THE REAR. VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED TO FIND PROBLEM AND DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY NEED TO BE REPLACED. THERE IS A TSB OUT ON THIS PROBLEM
THE BACK UP LIGHTS ON MY HIGHLANDER ARE ALMOST NON EXISTENT. I HAVE TRIED TO USE THEM TO BACK UP AT NIGHT AND THERE IS NOT LIGHT AT ALL. YOU CAN BARELY SEE ANYTHING AT NIGHT USING THESE "BACK UP LIGHTS" I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. I LIVE OUT IN THE COUNTRY AND NEED THESE BACK UP LIGHTS TO SEE ANY OBSTRUCTION AT NIGHT. I TOOK THE HIGHLANDER TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID THAT WAS JUST HOW TOYOTA MADE THESE BACK UP LIGHTS. I FEEL THIS IS INSUFFICIENT AND DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO BACK OUT OF MY DRIVE WAY AT NIGHT. I CANNOT BELIEVE NO ONE HAS ADDRESSED THIS PROBLEM .
WHILE DRIVING (IN MOTION), FREQUENT WARNING MESSAGE COMES ON THE DISPLAY PANEL THAT SAYS THE BACK (REAR) DOOR IS OPEN WHEN IT'S NOT. ALSO, INTERIOR LIGHTS COME ON, AND THERE IS THE WARNING / BEEP THAT KEEPS FLASHING. SOMETIMES, WHEN THE BACK GATE ALERT COMES ON, DOORS GET UNLOCKED. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE SEPTEMBER 2017.
WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS THERE IS A POPPING NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE STEERING WHEEL CAN BE TURNED SLIGHTLY LEFT OR RIGHT AND THE NOISE IS HEARD.
INDICATOR WARNING FOR REAR BACK DOOR OPEN WHEN IT IS SECURE AND LOCKED. INTERIOR LIGHTS GO ON AS WELL AS WARNING BELL. VEHICLE BROUGHT TO TOYOTA SERVICE DEPT. STATE THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE-HOWEVER IT IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT EACH TIME I DRIVE VEHICLE.
SUNROOF EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH ON INTERSTATE 44. SOUND RESEMBLED GUNSHOT. NO EXTREME TEMPERATURES. NO PROJECTILES. OVERREACTION COULD HAVE CAUSED ACCIDENT. CAUSE OF NOISE UNKNOWN UNTIL ABLE TO PULL OVER TO ROADSIDE. IF INTERIOR SHIELD HAD BEEN OPEN, SHARP GLASS PARTICLES WOULD HAVE SHOWERED OVER OCCUPANTS. INTERNET REVIEW DISCLOSES MANY SIMILAR EXPLODING SUNROOFS ON MANY MODELS AND BRANDS.
HYBRID BREAKING SYSTEM. THE HYBRID BREAKING SYSTEM (ACTUATOR, ACCUMULATOR, & PUMP) ON MY 2010 HIGHLANDER HYBRID ARE FAULTY AND HAVE FAILED. MY FAMILY PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM TOYOTA DEALER WHEN IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 1.5 YEARS YOUNG, AND HAVE PERFORMED ALL NECESSARY SERVICE AT CAMELBACK TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN A TIMELY FASHION. (23 SERVICE HISTORY REPORTS SHOWN ON CARFAX.) OUR HIGHLANDER HAS LESS THAN 100K MILES AND IS LESS THAN 10 YEARS OLD (APPROXIMATELY 8 YEARS OLD). THE FAULTY HYBRID BREAKING SYSTEM IS A KNOWN ISSUE, THAT TOYOTA HAS ISSUED 'LIMITED EXTENDED WARRANTIES' ON AT LEAST 736K VEHICLES (WHICH WOULD COVER MY REPAIR FREE OF CHARGE IF MY VEHICLE WAS OLDER ('WEP-ZG1' COVERS FULL REPLACEMENT OF BREAKING SYSTEM AT NO COST TO CUSTOMER FOR VEHICLES WITH 150K MILES OR LESS OR 10 YEARS OR NEWER) AND FULL RECALLS ON THE PRIUS BREAKING SYSTEM. CAMELBACK TOYOTA FIRST QUOTED ME $2,500 FOR THE REPAIR' BUT THAT FIRST REPAIR WAS ONLY TO REPLACE THE ACCUMULATOR AND THE PUMP. THE NEXT DAY, THE BRAKE MALFUNCTION LIGHTS CAME ON, AND NOW THEY'RE QUOTING ME ANOTHER $2,064 TO REPLACE THE ACTUATOR. MY FAMILY HAS CARED FOR THIS CAR PROPERLY, AND DONE NOTHING THAT WOULD CAUSE A TOTAL BREAK MALFUNCTION. THIS IS A MALFUNCTIONING BREAK SYSTEM THAT TOYOTA (AND THEIR PARTS MANUFACTURER) NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR. A BREAKING SYSTEM IS ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT SYSTEM ON ANY VEHICLE! THIS IS PUTTING MY FAMILY, AND OTHER FAMILIES AT RISK. I ASK THE NTSB TO FORCE A RECALL ON MY 2010 HIGHLANDER HYBRID MODEL. THANK YOU. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE FREE OF CHARGE SINCE THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RELATED RECALL. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO ADVISED THE CONTACT TO CALL THE NHTSA HOTLINE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER 1705112724. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 137,300. CLUNK IN STEERING WHEN TURNING AT LOW SPEED FROM STOP FOUND TO BE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT-REPLACED AT DEALER.GOOGLE SEARCH SHOW VERY COMMON IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT TOYOTA VEHICLES.
FAULTY REAR DOOR AJAR SENSOR REPORTS REAR DOOR OPEN INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DOOR IS CLOSED CAUSING INTERIOR LIGHTS, WARNING LIGHTS, AND CHIMES. STARTED WITH ONLY TURNS, ACCELERATION, DECELERATION, BUT RAPIDLY DETERIORATED TO NEAR CONSTANT FAILURE, PARTICULARLY IN WARM WEATHER. INITIALLY STARTED NEAR 2 YEARS AGO (25K MILES), BUT WAS ONLY MILDLY IRRITATING. NOW VEHICLE CANNOT BE LOCKED WITH THIS CONDITION.
STEERING WHEEL WOULD EXHIBIT A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WHEN TURNING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT. DID NOT FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE. TOYOTA MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT WHICH HE RECOMMENDED REPLACING. TOYOTA KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM SINCE THEY ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB) T-TT-0223-13 FOR THIS REPAIR. THERE IS ALSO AN NHTSA # 10062035 ON THIS SITUATION. TOYOTA SHOULD PAY FOR THIS COSTLY REPAIR SINCE I FEEL IT IS A SAFETY DEFECT AND SHOULD BE RECALLED
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, A RATTLING NOISE WAS HEARD UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALER REPLACED THE WATER PUMP, WHICH WAS RUSTED AND FRACTURED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,973.
AS I SLOWLY PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE HIGHLANDER SUDDENLY ACCELERATED QUICKLY, JUMPED THE CONCRETE PARKING STOP AND SLAMMED INTO A RETAINING WALL. IT HAPPENED VERY QUICKLY AND UNEXPECTED. I AM ORIGINAL OWNER. THE VEHICLE HAS 56000 MILES AND HAS BEEN SERVICED ONLY BY THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVABLE AND WAS TAKEN IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALER FOR 2 DAYS TO INSPECT THE SYSTEMS. BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE, THE REPAIR SHOP GOT THE VEHICLE IN IMMEDIATELY AND ESTIMATE REPAIRS AT $10,000. I AM VERY FRIGHTENED OF THIS VEHICLE RIGHT NOW AS ANOTHER INCIDENT LIKE THIS COULD PRODUCE MUCH WORSE RESULTS.
THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE CONCERNING WEATHERTECH MATS THAT RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. I AM ATTACHING A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCIDENT, WEATHERTECH'S RESPONSE, AND RESPONSE BACK TO THEM.
THE DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR WILL NOT STAY UP FLUSH WITH THE CEILING OF THE VEHICLE. THE VISOR HANGS AT ABOUT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE AND BLOCKS VISIBILITY WHILE DRIVING. MY HUSBAND IS UNABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR SAFELY AND IS AN AVERAGE HEIGHT MAN OF ABOUT 6 FEET TALL. *TR
POWER LIFT HATCHBACK DOOR NOT COSED ALL THE WAY. VERY DANGEROUS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. TWO YEARS AGO, THE DEALER REPLACED THE FLEXIBLE FLAT CABLE (FFC) PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V168000 (AIR BAGS). THE FFC THAT WAS REPLACED BECOME FAULTY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FFC NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,856.
FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR IS DEFECTIVE. FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT DISPLAYS "OFF" ON THE DASH AND ON THE DRIVER'S DISPLAY PANEL. AIRBAG WON'T DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT (BECAUSE THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR ISN'T WORKING). EVEN WHILE AN ADULT IS SEATED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THE AIRBAG SENSOR STAYS ILLUMINATED IN THE "OFF" POSITION. IT POPPED UP LAST YEAR AND NO ACCIDENTS OR ANY OTHER VEHICLE ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED DURING THAT TIME PERIOD.
IN LATE 2012, TOYOTA ISSUED A TSB RELATED TO THE REAR POWER LIFT GATE. INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO REPLACE THE HINGES, MOTOR UNIT, ETC... IF EVIDENCE OF FAILURE. LIMITATIONS WERE 3 YR 36,000 MILE WARRANTY. EXPLANATIONS FROM THE DEALER WERE THAT THE HINGES FOR THE BACK HATCH WERE UNDER MANUFACTURED FOR THE WEIGHT OF THE DOOR CAUSING THEM TO TWIST/WARP AND PULL AWAY FROM THE DOOR AND/OR FRAME. THIS ALSO CREATED UNDUE STRESS ON THE MOTOR ASSEMBLY UNIT OFTEN TIMES LEADING TO FAILURE. I HAD SERVICE PERFORMED IN EARLY 2013 AS RECOMMENDED BY THE TSB. I AM CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING THE IDENTICAL ISSUES AS STATED ABOVE BUT WORSE. THE DOOR NO LONGER OPERATES BY USING THE POWER LIFT FEATURE ON THE KEY FOB. THE DOOR IS AGAIN WARPED CAUSING THE GRINDING AND CLICKING NOISES WHEN YOU OPEN IT MANUALLY. THE MOTOR HAS FAILED AND I AM AFRAID MY ACTUAL DOOR IS WARPED. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MY DEALER AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE WORK WAS COMPLETED AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO FOR ME. THIS IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE LESS THAN EFFECTIVE. I DO NOT FEEL THIS IS A CAR MILEAGE ISSUE. IT IS SIMPLY A MANUFACTURING ERROR THAT HAS YET TO BE RESOLVED. TOYOTA FAILED TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. AFTER RESEARCHING MY PROBLEM I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN VERY LARGE CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS RELATED TO THIS VERY ISSUE. MANY TIMES THESE DOORS ARE NOT CLOSING AT ALL CREATING A POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE.
THIS MORNING AT 7:45 AM EST MY CAR SELF BROKE WHILE IN DRIVE AND TRAVELING AT 45MPH. I WAS LUCKY THE DRIVER BEHIND ME WAS ABLE TO AVOID HITTING ME. IS THIS A KNOW PROBLEM? I AM FEARFUL TO DRIVE ME CAR AGAIN
WHILE IN MOTION THE HEADS UP DISPLAY INDICATES THAT THE REAR DOOR IS OPEN. THIS COMES ON PERIODICALLY WHEN WINDOWS ARE DOWN OR WHEN MAKING TURNS OR ACCELERATION. THE DOME LIGHTS COME ON AND THE DOOR OPEN CHIME DINGS. THE COMPUTER THINKS THE REAR DOOR IS OPEN. I HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE AN ISSUE WHILE RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET. WHEN THE SERVICE MANAGER FROM COPELAND TOYOTA IN BROCKTON, MA AND I LOOKED AT THE TRUNK HINGES TOGETHER IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE TRUNK NOT CLOSING WAS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE WAY THAT THE HIGHLANDER WAS MANUFACTURED VERSUS DUE TO ANY FAULT OF OUR OWN. THIS ISSUE HAS LEFT MY CHILDREN AND I WITH A DRAINED BATTERY ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, WHICH IS NOT ONLY INCONVENIENT BUT A SAFETY ISSUE GIVEN THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH BEING STRANDED IN UNFAMILIAR TOWNS. THE MALFUNCTION AND INOPERABILITY OF OUR TRUNK DOOR LEAVES MY FAMILY AT RISK OF DANGER. HOWEVER, I WAS QUOTED $3,600 TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE BY A THIRD PARTY BODY SHOP THAT COPELAND TOYOTA USES. HOWEVER, THE REPAIR EXPENSES SHOULD NOT BE PAID BY MY FAMILY BUT RATHER TOYOTA SINCE THE ISSUE IS A DIRECT RESULT OF FAULTY MANUFACTURING. TO THIS POINT, I RECOGNIZE THAT I AM NOT ALONE, THERE ARE SEVERAL VIDEOS AND ENDLESS COMPLAINTS OF SEVERAL TOYOTA HIGHLANDERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE (NEWER MODELS AS WELL). DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR FAILS TO CLOSE THEREBY BLOCKING SOME FORWARD VISION.
I BOUGHT MY HIGHLANDER USED IN MARCH 2016. THE CAR HAS HAD THE CLUNKING NOISE SINCE I BOUGHT IT BUT I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH TOYOTA. I BOUGHT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT OF COURSE IT DOESN'T COVER THE DEFECT. I AM VERY UPSET BECAUSE I HAVE PAID FOR A WARRANTY THAT DOESN'T FIX WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CAR. I ALSO FEEL LIKE IT FALLS ON THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SHOULD HAVE FIXED IT BEFORE SELLING. EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE I DON'T WANT IT TO BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE IN THE FUTURE. I DON'T FEEL LIKE I SHOULD HAVE TO COME OUT OF POCKET $650 TO FIX AN ISSUE THAT IS KNOWN WITH THE MANUFACTURER.
VERY COMMON PROBLEM IS BEING REPORTED IN ALL OF THE HIGHLANDERS OF 2008 FORWARD. AT LOW MILEAGE, THE STEERING COLUMN HAS A BEARING IN IT CALLED A STUB SHAFT BUT APPARENTLY GETS LOOSE LEAVING TO A CLUNK AND LOOSENESS IN THE STEERING. IT IS SO COMMON THAT OUR DEALER HAS TO KEEP MULTIPLE REPLACEMENT PARTS IN STOCK. PEOPLE ARE REPORTING THIS WITHIN THE 36,000 MILE WARRANTY, MY CAR BEGAN TO DO IT AT ABOUT 60,000 MILES. IT IS A $700 REPAIR. LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IS POSSIBLE.
