TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 75 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE OFF ROAD TO A SAFE AREA WHERE IT WAS TOWED TO A DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE INVERTER MODULE ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,100. UPDATED 03/21/14*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE FAILURE OCCURED JUST AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK. UPDATED 03/28/2014 *JS
AFTER LEAVING A SKATING EVENT WITH 4 KIDS IN MY CAR AT APPROXIMATELY 8:30 PM, I NOTICED THAT I HAD NO HEADLIGHTS WHICH HAD WORKED 2 1/2 HOURS PRIOR. BOTH LIGHTS WENT OUT AT THE SAME TIME. ALL OTHER LIGHTS WORKED, INCLUDING HIGH BEAMS WHICH I USED TO CONTINUE DRIVING THAT EVENING. I CALLED THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT "THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM IN THE 2010 PRIUS. I MADE THE APPOINTMENT TO TAKE MY CAR IN FOR REPAIR AND WAS INFORMED THAT IT WOULD BE $800 TO FIX THE PROBLEM SINCE MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. WHEN I DROPPED MY CAR OFF, THE SERVICE REP SHOWED ME A SPEC SHEET STATING THAT I NEEDED A "HEADLAMP DURABILITY ENHANCEMENT" (SPEC SHEET WAS ISSUED OCT 2012) AND STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS "LOW BEAM HEADLAMP BULB LIFETIME WAS SHORTER THAN CUSTOMER EXPECTATION". THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM, THE PROBLEM WAS THAT BOTH LIGHTS WENT OUT AT THE SAME TIME WHICH IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I REQUESTED TO HAVE THE OLD PARTS RETURNED AND AN EXPERIENCED FRIEND WENT WITH ME TO QUESTION WHY I WAS CHARGED FOR JOINTS WHEN NONE HAD NOT BEEN TAKEN OFF MY CAR. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS NOT ON MY CAR PREVIOUSLY AND THAT I COULD REVIEW A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETING (TSB-0204-12) ON THE TOYOTA WEBSITE WHICH I CANNOT LOCATE THIS DOCUMENT ANYWHERE ONLINE. A FORMAL RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM WAS NEVER ISSUED EVEN THOUGH TOYOTA KNEW THAT THIS WAS A RECURRING PROBLEM IN THE 2010 PRIUS MODEL. *TR
THE INSTRUMENT PANEL VISIBILITY HAD DIMINISHED TO THE EXTENT THAT WHEN DRIVING IN BRIGHT SUN LIT DAYS THE INSTRUMENTS WERE UN READABLE, AS THE INCIDENT LIGHT FROM THE SURROUNDING AREA IN THE VEHICLE WASHED OUT THE DISPLAY VISIBILITY. NOT BEING ABLE TO READ THE PANEL, ESPECIALLY THE SPEED, BECOMES DANGEROUS. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CHECKED THE 12 VOLT BATTERY AND FOUND THAT IT WAS NOT AS IT SHOULD BE. BATTERY WAS REPLACED.. THINKING THAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM, AND AFTER REVIEWING THE INFO AVAILABLE FROM THE MANUFACTURER THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. IT HAS NOT. THIS CONDITION DOES NOT EXIST AT NIGHT WHEN THE RHEOSTAT DIMMER IS ACTIVATED. THE DIMMER DOES NOT AFFECT THE DISPLAY WHEN IN THE DIMMER OFF, OR ON, IN THE DAYLIGHT. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE HYBRID FAILURE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AS THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY STATED THAT THE INVERTER ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. EVER SINCE ACQUIRING THIS VEHICLE EARLIER THIS YEAR, I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING LOSS OF BREAKING FOR A SECOND EVERY TIME I HIT A POTHOLE AND BUMPY SPOT. IT HAPPENS EVERY OTHER TIME. UPON GOGGLING THIS PROBLEM, I LEARNED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS FIRST REPORTED TO NHTSA WAY BACK IN 2009. BUT I DO NOT SEE ANY RECALLS RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM. YOUR WEBSITE SAYS YOU HAVE RECEIVED ABOUT 33 COMPLAINS. UNLESS I MISSED SOMETHING, IS THERE ANY STATUS REPORT FROM TOYOTA OR THE RECALL THAT SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSES THIS PROBLEM? ALSO, I LIVE IN THE EAST COAST, SPECIFICALLY IN NJ. WE HAD A BRUTAL WINTER THIS YEAR. IN ONE INCIDENT, I WAS DRIVING UP A SLIGHTLY ELEVATED ROAD (BARELY 2--5% INCLINE) IN A 25MPH RESIDENTIAL ROAD WITH SLIGHTLY SLIPPERY ROAD (NOT REALLY BLACK ICE PER SE). I LOSS CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL LITE UP AND STARTED BEEPING. WHILE TRYING TO BRING THE CAR IN CONTROL, MY CAR ENDED UP ON THE OTHER SIDE (THANKFULLY THERE WERE NO VEHICLES PARKED ON THE OTHER SIDE OR ANY ONCOMING VEHICLES) AND THEN SHIFTED TO THE RIGHT BUT FINALLY MANAGED TO BRING IT BACK IN CONTROL. OTHER MISC INFORMATION: I LEARNED ABOUT A RECALL EARLIER THIS YEAR RELATED TO ECU BOARD PROGRAMMING UPDATE FROM THE NEWS MEDIA (SINCE I WAS A NEW OWNER, TOYOTA PROBABLY DIDN'T HAVE MY INFORMATION SO NEVER GOT RECALL NOTICE) AND I WENT TO THE DEALER FOR UPDATE. I WAS HOPING SOFTWARE UPDATE MIGHT ALSO ADDRESS POTHOLE/LOSS OF BREAK PROBLEM BUT IT HAS NOT HELPED. *TR
AROUND 4PM ON THU JAN 2ND 2014, WE WERE DRIVING EASTBOUND ON BEL-RED RD JUST ABOUT TO COME TO THE INTERSECTION OF NE 116TH ST WHEN I NOTICED THE ABS LIT UP, ALONG WITH THAT A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER LIGHTS LIT UP ON THE DASHBOARD AND I LOST POWER TO THE CAR (NO ACCELERATOR/BRAKE/STEERING). ALL ELECTRICALS SEEMED TO WORK. I TRIED TO POWER DOWN AND RESTART THE CAR. I CALLED TOYOTA OF KIRKLAND AND CHECKED IF THEY HAD A TOWING SERVICE, THEY DIDN'T. A COP OFFERED TO CALL A TOWING SERVICE. THE TOW TRUCK CAME BY AND HE AGREED TO GIVE ME A RIDE TO TOYOTA OF KIRKLAND AS WELL. AT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY JUST DID THE PAPERWORK AND SAID THEY'D CALL TOMORROW. FRIDAY JAN 3RD 2014 I WAITED UNTIL 11:15AM. NO CALL FROM TOYOTA OF KIRKLAND. I CALLED THEM. I SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR THE ERROR CODES. HE CALLED BACK A LITTLE WHILE LATER AND SAID THAT IT LOOKED LIKE THE INVERTER WAS FAULTY. THIS WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY WHICH WAS FOR 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES WHICHEVER CAME FIRST. SO, I WOULD BE LOOKING AT PAYING ABOUT $3300 FOR THE PART, $300 FOR LABOR, $110 FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND TAXES. THEY COULD GET THE PART IN TOMORROW AND POTENTIALLY HAVE IT FIXED SAT OR LATEST MONDAY. THE ERROR CODES WERE P0A94 & P324E I LOOKED UP ONLINE FOR THESE ERROR CODES. THERE WERE SOME OTHER COMPLAINTS THAT WERE VERY SIMILAR TO THE ONE I HAD AND THE PROBLEM WAS THE INVERTER. AND IT ALSO SEEMED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE INVERTER (OR PARTS) FOR THE MODELS FROM 2005-2009. SO, CALLED 1-800-331-4331 (TOYOTA CUSTOMER SOMETHING). SHE TOOK DOWN ALL THE DETAILS. WHILE SHE PUT ME ON HOLD TO LOOK UP THE WARRANTY INFORMATION, TOYOTA OF KIRKLAND CALLED AND LEFT A MESSAGE SAYING THAT HE HAD MISUNDERSTOOD THE WARRANTY AND THAT IT WAS ALL COVERED AND HE COULD ORDER THE PART IN, IT WOULD BE THERE TOMORROW (SAT) AND THE CAR WOULD BE READY MONDAY! TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS OVER A BUMP OR POTHOLE, THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY EXPERIENCE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED EVEN WHEN THE BRAKES WERE ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
DESIGN FLAW....LOSS OF BRAKE FUNCTION DURING BRAKING EVENTS WHILE GOING OVER BUMPS AND POTHOLES (LOWER SPEEDS <30MPH). I BELIEVE THE ROOT CAUSE IS THE TRANSITION BETWEEN REGENERATIVE BRAKING AND HYDRAULIC BRAKE. I ALWAYS FEEL UNSAFE DURING BRAKING EVENTS, AND ALWAYS HAVE TO BE PROACTIVE AND CALCULATE THE DISTANCE IN FRONT OF ME TO ACCOMMODATE THE LOSS IN STOP DISTANCE . VERY UNCOMFORTABLE FEELING!

DRIVING THE CAR AT 40 MPH WENT IT SUDDENLY STOPPED. WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. FOUND OUT TODAY THAT THE WATER PUMP CAUSED THE INVERTER TO BECOME NON-WORKING WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN. VERY DANGEROUS. LUCKY I WAS NOT ON THE INTERSTATE. *TR
THE HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT SUDDENLY WHILE DRIVING. MY HUSBAND CHANGED THE BULBS BUT THAT DIDN'T HELP. ALL FUSES ARE GOOD. I READ ONLINE THAT IT IS THE RELAY AND THAT MANY OTHER PRIUS OWNER'S HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
I BELIEVE THE NHTSA SHOULD INVESTIGATE WHETHER TOYOTA HAS UNDERSTATED THE NUMBER OF 2010 PRIUS CARS WITH POTENTIALLY FAULTY BRAKE ACCUMULATOR PUMPS. THE COMPANY RECALLED THOUSANDS OF THE CARS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JUNE AND OCTOBER, 2009. MY DEALER RECENTLY TOLD ME THAT MY 2010 PRIUS, MANUFACTURED IN DECEMBER, 2009 ? JUST TWO MONTHS LATER ? HAS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS A ?SAFETY CONCERN? AND THAT THE PUMP SHOULD BE REPLACED ?AS SOON AS POSSIBLE,? AT A COST OF OVER $4,000. BUT BECAUSE MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED TWO MONTHS AFTER THE LAST CARS COVERED IN THE RECALL, THEY HAVE REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT. I AM VERY DOUBTFUL OF THE IDEA THAT PROBLEM AFFECTING MY CAR IS DIFFERENT FROM THE DEFECT RESULTING IN THE RECALL. FIRST, THE KEY ISSUE IS ESSENTIALLY IDENTICAL: CONTAMINATED FLUID THAT COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF BRAKING POWER. SECOND, THE CAR IS THE SAME MODEL AND YEAR AS THOSE RECALLED, JUST MANUFACTURED A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER. THIRD, THIS SORT OF REPAIR ? THE NEED TO REPLACE A SINGLE, VERY EXPENSIVE COMPONENT LESS THAN FOUR YEARS AFTER PURCHASE ? OUGHT TO BE RARE. IF IT?S NOT, THIS SUGGESTS A SYSTEMATIC DIFFICULTY. *TR
WHEN DRIVING OVER BUMPY OR ROUGH SURFACES OR POT HOLES, WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE BRAKES OFTEN SEEM TO STOP WORKING. AND THE CAR SEEMS TO HAVE A LITTLE BOOST FORWARD. IT HAPPENS WHEREVER THE ROAD SURFACE HAS BUMPY AREAS ON STRAIGHTAWAYS OR CURVES. AND MOSTLY WHEN APPLYING LIGHT PRESSURE TO THE BREAK, LIKE SLOWING FOR AN UPCOMING TURN. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE I GOT THE CAR IN 2013. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO A MECHANIC, BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES OVER LAST 3 1/2 YEARS.
REVERSING INTO MY DRIVEWAY WHICH IS A SLOPE DRIVEWAY. TRYING TO GO SLOW AS POSSIBLE. WHEN TRY TO STOP THE CAR WITH BRAKES THE CAR DID NOT STOP. CAUSING A CRASHED THROUGH MY GARAGE DOOR WHICH WAS CLOSE AT THAT TIME. *TR
I OWN A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WHICH I BOUGHT IN AUGUST 2013. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, APPROXIMATELY, 4-5 TIMES A WEEK, EVERY TIME I RUN OVER A ROAD BUMP OR PATH HOLE AT SLOWER SPEEDS (10-20 MPH), THE CAR ACCELERATES ITSELF. WHEN I SEE THE BUMP OR PATH HOLE, I PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL TO TRY TO SLOW DOWN BUT IT ACCELERATES INSTEAD. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO ME SINCE I PURCHASE THE VEHICLE, THE MOST RECENT TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS TODAY, TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 2014. TODAY'S SURGE IN THE ACCELERATION WAS MORE THAN BEFORE. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED TOYOTA AND REPORTED THE INCIDENT. I UNDERSTAND THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE THIS CAR WAS RELEASED IN 2009-2010 AND MANY OTHER OWNERS REPORTED IT IN THE PAST. I AM CONCERNED FOR SAFETY REASONS, KINDLY HAVE TOYOTA ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU. *TR
CAR FAILS TO STOP ON BUMPY SURFACES. STREET UNDER CONSTRUCTION WAS COVERED WITH METAL PLATES WITH BUMPY SURFACE (THE RIDGES ARE ARRANGED IN SQUARES AND I THINK ARE LESS THAN AN INCH HIGH; THEY ARE NOT THE PLATES WITH A SMOOTH SURFACE). AS THE CAR WENT OVER THE PLATES, BRAKING FAILED. THE PLATES ENDED A SHORT DISTANCE BEFORE THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL AND REGULAR PAVEMENT RESUMED. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO STOP IN TIME. I CHECKED ONLINE AND I SEE THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. SOMEONE SUGGESTED THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. THIS HAPPENED ON S. LEIMERT BLVD. APPROACHING VERNON, BUT THESE PLATES ARE ALL OVER THIS PART OF LOS ANGELES. *TR
WE NOTICED THAT THE CARPET WAS SATURATED. THE DEALER TOLD US IT WAS BECAUSE THERE WERE SPIDER WEBS BLOCKING THE DRAIN FROM THE A/C. IT WAS REPAIRED AT A COST OF $1,554, THE WORK INCLUDED DRYING THE AIR BAG MODULE AND REPLACEMENT OF CARPET. WE BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE THE SUBJECT OF A RECALL AS IT IS THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM RECALLED FOR THE TOYOTA CAMRY. *TR
ON OCTOBER 10TH, 2013 AT 7 PM, I NOTICED SEVERAL BRAKE LIGHTS, ABS, AND SLIDING SIGN LIGHT CAME ON WHEN I STARTED MY CAR. I THOUGHT IT WAS SOME KIND OF ELECTRICAL GLITCH SO I TURNED MY CAR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON. THE LIGHTS STAYED SAME. MY HUSBAND WHO SAT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE LOOKED INTO THE MANUAL BOOK AND TOLD ME THOSE LIGHTS WERE INDICATED FOR BRAKE SYSTEM. WE DECIDED TO GO HOME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WE NEEDED TO DO. AS SOON AS I STARTED TO DRIVE, I NOTICED BRAKE PEDAL WAS MUCH LOWER THAN IT USUALLY IS AND ALSO NOTICED BRAKE WAS NOT WORKING. MY CAR KEPT MOVING EVEN WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE ALL THE WAY. AT THAT MOMENT, I KNEW I HAD TO TAKE MY CAR TO DEALER RIGHT AWAY. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS OR NOISE FOR A DRIVER TO NOTICE BEFORE THE WHOLE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS COMPLETELY FAIL TO PERFORM. IN JANUARY 2013, TOYOTA RECALLED MANY PRIUS IN SAME MODEL AND SAME YR AS MINE FOR TOTAL BREAK SYSTEM FAILURE. EVEN THOUGH MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT UNDER THEIR RECALL LIST, MY CAR'S BRAKE SYSTEM BROKE DOWN COMPLETELY TO FUNCTION DUE TO SAME REASONS TOYOTA RECALLED MANY PRIUS 2010 THIS YEAR. TOYOTA REFUSED TO FIX MY CAR UNDER THEIR RECALL SYSTEM WARRANTY BECAUSE MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT UNDER THEIR RECALL LIST. TOYOTA DEALER CHARGED ME $4300 TO REPLACE THE WHOLE BRAKE SYSTEM FOR MY CAR AND IT TOOK 4 WEEKS TO FIND THE PARTS IN NORTH AMERICA TO FIX MY CAR. IT COST ME ANOTHER $1000 TO RENT A CAR WHILE MY PRIUS AT TOYOTA DEALER TO FIND THE PARTS TO FIX IT. I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH THAT MY BRAKE SYSTEM DIDN'T BLOW OUT ON ME WHEN I WAS DRIVING 75MPH ON FREEWAY. I'M SURE THERE ARE MANY OTHER PRIUS 2010 HAVE BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE LIKE MINE EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE NOT UNDER THEIR RECALL LIST. *TR
UPON BRAKING OVER A BUMP, POTHOLE, WET LEAVES AND/OR ANY COMBINATION OF THE AFOREMENTIONED CIRCUMSTANCES, THE PRIUS ACCELERATES FORWARD, THUS CREATING A VERY UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITION. SINCE I ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, IT HAS DONE THIS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AND AM AFRAID THAT THIS BRAKING ISSUE MAY RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT THAT OTHERWISE WOULD HAVE BEEN A NON-ISSUE FOR ANY OTHER VEHICLE. IN MY 19+ YEARS OF DRIVING, I HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE DO THIS WHILE BRAKING. I, THEREFORE, IMPLORE THE NTSB TO DUTIFULLY CARRY OUT ITS MISSION STATEMENT OF PROTECTING MOTORISTS BY FORCING TOYOTA TO RECALL SAID VEHICLE IN ORDER TO PROPERLY REMEDY THIS ISSUE BEFORE PREVENTABLE ACCIDENTS OCCUR AND LIVES ARE POTENTIALLY LOST. *TR
BOUGHT THIS CAR CERTIFIED USED FROM TOYOTA DEALER IN MID-MAY 2013. FIRST PRIUS I'VE OWNED, AND NOT USED TO DRIVING IT, SO THE FIRST COUPLE TIMES IT 'LURCHED FORWARD' WITH THE BRAKES ON, I WAS SURPRISED, BUT FIGURED IT WAS JUST RELATED TO THE 'HYBRID'. IT HAPPENED AGAIN LAST WEEK AT A STOP SIGN WITH ROUGH ROAD - BRAKING, HIT BUMPS, AND BRAKES DISAPPEAR! TOOK IT INTO DEALER THIS MORNING, AND THEY'RE SAYING IT'S 'NORMAL'. THEN I START RESEARCHING AND WHILE CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS, IT'S THE SAME PROBLEM INVESTIGATED IN NTSB 10V039000. EXACTLY! CAR IS STILL AT DEALER, AS I HAVE ASKED TO SPEAK TO SERVICE MGR. THE ONLY WAY TO GET IT TO LOOSEN UP IS TO PUSH THE RELEASE LATCH , UNBUCKELING CHILD AND RETRACTING SEAT BELT ALL THE WAY,THEN REATTACHING SEAT BELT AND HOPE IT WILL NOT HURT MY GRANDSON AGAIN . I WAS DRIVING 15 MPH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STALLED AND STATED, "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM". STOPPED THE CARE RIGHT AWAY CALLED AAA AND TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA FACILITY WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAILED INVERTER, WHICH IS PART OF THE HYBRID SYSTEM. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND MUST BE ADDRESSED. *TR
THIS HAPPENED MORE THEN ONCE, ALL PRETTY MUCH THE SAME WAY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, APPLYING THE BRAKES COMING TO A STOP AND TRAVELING OVER A ROUGH ROAD THE BRAKES FEEL LIKE THEY RELEASE AND THE VEHICLE DOES NOT STOP. AFTER THE VEHICLE PASSES THE ROUGH ARE I HAVE TO RELEASE THE BRAKES AND REAPPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDDLE FOR THE VEHICLE BRAKES TO REENGAGE AND STOP THE FORWARD MOMENTUM. LAST MONTH WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALER IN OLYMPIA WA, I ASKED THEM TO CHECK FOR ANY RECALLS AND MAKE A NOTE OF THE ISSUE. THIS ISSUE HAS ALMOST CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *TR
COMING TO A STOP LIGHT, I APPLIED THE BRAKES. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH MY CAR THAT WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES AND A BUMP IN THE ROAD IS DETECTED, THE CAR SUPPOSEDLY SWITCHES TO ABS BRAKING. THE NET EFFECT OF IT IS THAT THE BRAKES TEMPORARILY DISENGAGE CAUSING THE CAR TO ACCELERATE FOR A BRIEF PERIOD UNTIL YOU REAPPLY THE BRAKES AND EVENTUALLY COME TO A STOP. SO AS A RESULT, THE FROM THE MOMENT YOU APPLY THE BRAKES TO THE TIME YOU STOP, THERE IS A "LURCHING FORWARD" OF ABOUT 5 FEET UNDER WHICH YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE CAR. THAT IS QUITE SCARY SINCE IF PER CHANCE A PERSON WERE CROSSING THE ROAD WHILE YOUR CAR HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD, YOUR VEHICLE COULD THEORETICALLY HIT THE PERSON BEFORE THE BRAKES HAD A CHANCE TO KICK IN. I'VE CHECKED THE BLOGS AND HAVE NOTICED THAT PEOPLE WITH PRIUSES FROM VARIOUS YEARS HAVE REPORTED THE SAME PROBLEM. I NOTICED THIS PROBLEM EARLY ON IN MY OWNERSHIP OF THE CAR, AND ACTUALLY ASKED THE DEALER TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY REPORTED TO ME THAT EVERYTHING WAS WORKING PROPERLY. RECEIVED SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES USA. MADE APPOINTMENT WITH LIBERTYVILLE TOYOTA (AUTONATION TOYOTA LIBERTYVILLE IN LIBERTYVILLE, ILLINOIS), THE DEALER FROM WHOM I BOUGHT THE CAR. ON 9/13/13 LIBERTYVILLE TOYOTA INSPECTED MY VEHICLE AND ADVISED ME THAT THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLY WAS ON THE RECALL LIST THAT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. WHILE BRAKING OVER AN UNEVEN SURFACE COMING UP TO A STOP LIGHT, THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD, CAUSING IT TO SEEMINGLY ACCELERATE INTO THE CROSSWALK. I WAS COASTING UP TO THE STOPLIGHT AND APPLIED THE BRAKES CLOSER TO THE LIGHT, AS THE CAR WAS TRAVELING OVER THE UNEVEN SURFACE. THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH REGULAR CONSISTENCY EVEN THOUGH THE CAR GOT THE SOFTWARE FIX WITHIN A FEW MONTHS OF PURCHASE IN 2010. IT MOSTLY HAPPENS DECELERATING OVER POTHOLES IN THE ROAD, WHEN GOING FROM COASTING (REGENERATIVE BREAKING) TO APPLYING THE BRAKES BY FOOT. *TR

EVERY TIME I RUN OVER A ROAD BUMP AT SLOWER SPEEDS (10-20 MPH) WITH LIGHT TAP ON THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN, THE CAR ACCELERATES ITSELF AT THE TOP OF THE BUMP. WHEN I SEE THE BUMP, I PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL TO TRY TO SLOW DOWN BUT IT ACCELERATES INSTEAD AT THE TOP OF THE BUMP. I CALLED TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE DEPT AND REPORTED THE INCIDENT. MAYBE THE COMPUTER'S ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL IS INVOLVED IN THE PROBLEM, EVEN THOUGH THE CAR DID NOT INDICATE THAT ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL WAS ENGAGED. BOTH TIMES I WAS DRIVING ON A SLIGHT DOWNHILL AT ~20 MPH. IMMEDIATELY AFTER I PASSED OVER SOME BUMPS, I DEPRESSED THE BRAKES, AND THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT DELAY IN THE BRAKES BEING ENGAGED (1S). WHILE ON VACATION ON AUG 3, 2013, WE WERE DRIVING IN THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS IN GATLINBURG, TN, VIA THE SCENIC LOOP DOWN FROM CADES COVE. PANICKED, I PULLED OVER AT THE NEXT LOOKOUT LEDGE, TURNED THE CAR'S POWER OFF AND ON SEVERAL TIMES, TURNED THE LIGHTS OFF AND ON SEVERAL TIMES WHILE THE CAR WAS RUNNING - NOTHING. NO CELLPHONE SERVICE WAS AVAILABLE IN THE AREA. AS I WAS HYSTERICAL AND TERRIFIED BEYOND MY WITS, MY HUSBAND TOOK OVER DRIVING DUTY AND DROVE WITH THE EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON. AFTER A FEW MILES OF SHEER PANIC AND INCOHERENCE, IT OCCURRED TO US TO TRY THE HIGH BEAM, WHICH FORTUNATELY WORKED AND WE ARE ALIVE TO TELL THE STORY TODAY. I WAS DRIVING WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC (AROUND 30 MPH) ON A MAIN SURFACE STREET IN A MIDDLE LANE OF A MULTILANE STREET WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE STOPPED, AND I WAS UNABLE TO MAKE THE ENGINE RESPOND. I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND REPEATEDLY TRIED TO RESTART IT TO NO AVAIL. I CALLED FOR TOWING SERVICE AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY TOYOTA DEALER, WHERE THE SERVICE PEOPLE SAID IT WAS AN "INTERNAL FAILURE" AND REPLACED THE INVERTER ASSEMBLY. WHAT HAS TERRIFIED ME IS THAT I COULD HAVE BEEN ON THE FREEWAY DRIVING AT LEAST 60 MPH, WHERE THE CONSEQUENCES WOULD BE DEVASTATING TO ME AND OTHERS. I ASKED IF TOYOTA WOULD BE REPORTING THIS TO THE NHTSA, AND THEY SAID THAT WAS AN INTERNAL DETERMINATION. I ASKED IF THIS HAD HAPPENED BEFORE TO OTHERS AND DID NOT RECEIVE A CLEAR ANSWER. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT CA. 20 MPH A SUDDEN JOLT AND CLUNK OCCURRED AND THE CAR WAS STALLED. VARIOUS DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON, AND THE DASH DISPLAYED "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM." TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER, THE PROBLEM WAS STATED TO BE A FAILED INVERTER-CONVERTER THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
THIS IS RELATED TO REPORT RECEIPT DATE: FEB 09, 2010 (I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN MAY, 2013). NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V039000 COMPONENT(S): SERVICE BRAKES, AIR - THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME WHEN THE CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT. I COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA AT THE TIME THAT THIS CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE RECALL LIST - IT DOES EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THIS CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION...THE BRAKES RELEASE WHEN BRAKING OVER BUMPS OR SLIPPERY SURFACES. THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT IN, THEY SAID THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG, AND THEY WERE 'WORKING AS DESIGNED'. I CALLED TOYOTA TODAY AFTER READING MORE ABOUT THIS RECALL, AND THEY TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE TO SERVICE AND GIVE THEM A RIDE TO SHOW THEM HOW IT HAPPENS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS CAR WASN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR ASSISTANCE? ARE YOU STILL GETTING COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE BRAKES WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT NITROGEN GAS WAS LEAKING INTO THE BRAKE FLUID. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V235000 (SERVICE BRAKES) THAT COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000. *TR
WHILE TRAVELING ON AN EXPRESSWAY, DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC,EVERY LIGHT ON THE DASH BOARD LIT UP THEN THE CAR COMPLETELY DIED. A MESSAGE OF 'HYBRID SYSTEM FAILED' SHOWED BEFORE IT DIED. THERE WAS NO SLOW DOWN OR WARNING. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THE INVERTER WAS REPLACED. *TR
