TL * THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE FIRST TIME SHE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WAS ON JANUARY 15, 2010. WHILE STOPPED AT THE RED LIGHT WITH HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. SHE PUT THE GEAR IN NEUTRAL AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED, AS SOON SHE TOOK THE GEAR OUT OF NEUTRAL THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AGAIN. SHE EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE FIVE TIMES. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FEBRUARY 13 2010 THE DEALER REPLACED ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND RESET THE ACCELERATOR COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM. AND ON MARCH 18, 2010 SHE EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE AGAIN WHILE STOPPED AT THE RED LIGHT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT STATED SHE WILL TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. THE CURRENT FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 4,200.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT PROJECT FAR ENOUGH DOWN THE ROAD, CAUSING HIM TO HAVE TO DRIVE WITH THE HIGH BEAMS ON. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE HEADLIGHTS WERE LINED UP BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 4,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100.
WHEN THE CAR GOES OVER AN UNEVEN OR BUMPY [SURFACE,] OR DOWN AN INCLINE, THE CAR ACCELERATES OR LURCHES FORWARD. THIS HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES AND IS UNNERVING TO THE POINT I HAVE SWITCHED CARS WITH MY HUSBAND. ALSO, WHEN COMING OUT OF MY GARAGE MOST EACH DAY, THE CAR ROLLS BACK ON BATTERY POWER, BUT THE BRAKES ARE STIFF, JUST LIKED YOU WOULD PUMP THEM WHEN THE CAR IS OFF (REAL HARD) UNTIL THE CARS MOTOR TURNS ON. BUT BY THEN, YOU HAVE ROLLED 15 OR SO FEET BACKWARD WITH LITTLE TO NO BREAK CONTROL. THEY FEEL LIKE THEY WON'T STOP THE CAR. *TR
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE WHILE COMING TO A TRAFFIC LIGHT ON A SLIGHTLY ICY ROAD, THE CAR ACCELERATED. IT WAS NOT THE FUNCTION OF ANTILOCK BRAKES, BUT RATHER A SURGE THAT WAS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED AND SOMEWHAT FRIGHTENING. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO CAR IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF ME, OR I WOULD HAVE SURELY REAR ENDED IT. I REPORTED THIS TO TOYOTA AND THERE IS A CASE NUMBER - 1001142944. GIVEN TOYOTA'S SLOWNESS TO REACT TO THE GAS PEDAL ISSUE, I WANT TO NOTIFY NHTSA. *TR
WHEN DRIVING AND BRAKING, IF YOU HIT A BUMP OR POT HOLE, THE BRAKES RELEASE AND THE CAR DOESN'T SLOW DOWN. THIS HAS HAPPENED A NUMBER OF TIME SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN AUGUST 2009. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THIS WEEK, TOYOTA IS SUPPOSED TO ANNOUNCE WHETHER THE 2010 PRIUS WILL BE RECALLED FOR PROBLEMS WITH ITS BRAKING SYSTEM. I BROUGHT MY PRIUS ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2009 FROM SAN FRANCISCO TOYOTA. I HAVE THE PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED IN THE MEDIA: THOUGH I HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT IN RAINY CONDITIONS, THE BRAKING SYSTEM FAILS WHEN I HIT A POT HOLE WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES. THERE IS A HILL NEAR MY HOME THAT I DRIVE MOST EVERY DAY. IT HAPPENS IN THE SAME PLACE EVERY TIME: I AM HEADED DOWNHILL TOWARD A STOP SIGN; I HIT THE POT HOLE AND FOR A SECOND MY CAR FEELS AS THOUGH IT WERE HYDRO PLANING--I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL. I DIDN'T THINK TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS BEFORE I BEGAN HEARING THE NEWS. I DON'T DRIVE VERY MUCH IN THE CITY AND IT WAS ONLY IN THIS ONE SPECIFIC PLACE THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM SEEMED TO FAIL. BUT IT IS TERRIFYING TO FEEL THAT YOUR CAR IS OUT OF CONTROL. IF I DROVE MY PRIUS MORE I AM CERTAIN I WOULD BE EXPERIENCING THIS DESIGN FLAW MORE. I ENCOURAGE NHTSA TO BRING ITS REGULATORY WEIGHT TO BEAR TO FORCE TOYOTA TO FIX THIS PROBLEM--WHICH IT HAS FOR 2010 PRIUS'S SOLD AFTER JANUARY 2010. I WOULD LIKE THE SAME SAFETY MEASURES TAKEN FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE DEFECTIVE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS VEHICLES, BUT WHO BOUGHT OUR PRIUS'S BEFORE JANUARY 2010. *TW
BRAKES SEEM TO FAIL WHEN BRAKING OVER A DEPRESSION IN THE ROAD OR WHEN BRAKING ON ICY PATCHES OF THE ROAD. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST FIVE TIMES IN DECEMBER, 2009 AND JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010. PRIUS *TW
TODAY AT AROUND 220- PRIUS JUMPED OR .. LURCHED FORWARD AS I WAS BRAKING - I THINK ON BUENA VISTA - FRONT OF ST JOES - I HAD COME FROM PARTNERS CREDIT UNION - WAS GOING TO FREEWAY 134 - I WAS GOING SLOW MAYBE 20 MPH - CARS WERE COMING TO STOP AT STOPLIGHT BEFORE FREEWAY ON RAMP - AS I BRAKED GENTLY I HIT A METAL COVER ON GROUND - BUT INSTEAD OF STOPPING THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD - FORTUNATELY - THERE WAS AMPLE ROOM IN FRONT OF ME- I WAS GOING SLOW AND BRAKED EARLY - OTHERWISE I MIGHT HAVE HIT THE STOPPED CAR IN FRONT - MORE THAN JUST SLIPPING - LIKE WHEN BRAKING ON ICE.. THE CAR ACTUALLY JERKED FORWARD - EARLIER IN WEEK - I WAS BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY AT HOUSE - AND AS I WAS BACKING UP AND BRAKING THE BRAKES WERE REAL JERKY - HARD - OVER - RESPONSIVE - THEN WHEN I HIT THE ROAD - GOING FORWARD - BRAKES WENT BACK TO NORMAL. *TR
WHEN MY VEHICLE IS FIRST STARTED IN THE MORNING THE BRAKES GRAB SUDDENLY. THIS OCCURS AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK. I HAVE OWNED THE NEW CAR FOR 1.5 MONTHS. I HAVE NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. *TR
MY 2010 PRIUS ACCELERATES OVER BUMPY ROAD CONDITIONS IRRESPECTIVE OF WHETHER OR NOT MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE OR NOT ON ANYTHING AT ALL.
I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES ON MY NEW 2010 PRIUS WHICH I PURCHASED A FEW DAYS BEFORE XMAS. I HAVE REPORTED TWO OF THE EPISODES WITH TOYOTA - THE FIRST TIME THE PHONE REP SEEMED TO LISTEN CAREFULLY TO MY ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED - THE LAST TIME I CALLED THE PHONE REP SEEMED TO BLOW ME OFF AND DIDN'T' ASK ANY FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS BUT SAID TO TAKE IT TO MY LOCAL DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THIS WAS BEFORE THE BRAKE ISSUE BECAME KNOWN AS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM - THE LOCAL DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR TOLD ME THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS - AGAIN THIS IS BEFORE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE POTENTIAL RECALL - BOTH TIMES - I WAS DRIVING SLOWLY AND WHEN I PUT MY FOOT ON THE B RAKE IT NOT ONLY DIDN'T STOP BUT ACTUALLY SEEMED TO JUMP FORWARD SEVERAL FEET. FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO CARS IN FRONT OF ME SO I DID NOT HIT ANYTHING. I HAVE ALSO HAD REPEATED BRAKING PROBLEMS WHEN I AM BACKING UP- AND WHEN I FIRST DRIVE THE CAR AFTER NOT DRIVING IT FOR AN HOUR OR SO - JUST A BARE TOUCH OF THE BRAKE AND IT STOPS SO HARD - THE FIRST TIME I THOUGHT I HAD HIT SOMETHING - THE BRAKES WILL CONTINUE TO JERK AND JOLT ME UNTIL I START TO DRIVE FORWARD - THEN IT SEEMS TO CORRECT ITSELF. I HAVE HAD THE CAR ONE MONTH - I LIVE IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA. *TR
I HAVE A 2010 PRIUS AND AM ALSO HAVING BRAKE PROBLEMS. THE BRAKES INTERMITTENTLY SEEMS TO SLIP FOR A COUPLE SECONDS. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN AT LOW SPEEDS, ON HILLS, AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TIME I AM PRESSING ON THE BRAKE. IT HAS HAPPENED BOTH WHILE CONTINUOUSLY PRESSING THE BRAKE AND ALSO AS I EASE OFF THE PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE. THE BEHAVIOR IS OCCASIONAL, BUT RECURRING. *TR
BRAKING DOES NOT OCCUR IMMEDIATELY ON OCCASION ON TOYOTA 2010 PRIUS. TRACTION LIGHT EVEN COMES ON AS IF YOU ARE SKIDDING. THIS HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIME FOR ME SINCE OWNING THE CAR IN SEPT 2009. I HAVE HAD A PRIUS FROM EACH GENERATION (THIS IS MY THIRD PRIUS) - THIS DID NOT OCCUR IN THOSE. DID CALL DEALER ON THIS. EXACT DATES NOT KEPT BUT WILL PUT AN ESTIMATE OF LAST TIME BELOW. *TR
BRAKE PROBLEM WITH 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. *TR
01/13/2010 - I WENT TO THE SERVICE DEPT AT TOYOTA OF WALLINGFORD TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LOSS OF BRAKES IN A NEW 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WHILE DRIVING OVER UNEVEN GROUND. I HAD OWNED THE CAR ONE MONTH WITH 1500 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE CAR IS TERRIFYING BECAUSE THE CAR SEEMS TO ACCELERATE FORWARD. THE SERVICE ATTENDANT WAS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND DESCRIBED THE SITUATION. HE TOOK THE CAR ON A TEST DRIVE. HE ASSURED ME IT WAS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHENEVER SHE ATTEMPTS TO STOP ON AN UNEVEN ROAD, THE BRAKES FAIL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. WHENEVER THE FAILURE OCCURRED THE SPEED VARIES. THE VEHICLE ALSO BRIEFLY LUNGED FORWARD AND ACCELERATED. THE BRAKES SQUEAK CONTINUOUSLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO CONFIRMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS FUNCTIONING NORMALLY SINCE IT HAS AN ELECTRICAL ENGINE COMBINED WITH A GASOLINE ENGINE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000.
NOTICED THE BRAKING ON MY 2010 PRIUS HAS A FEW PROBLEMS EVERY NOW AND THEN. WHEN PRESSING DOWN ON THE BRAKE PEDAL IT FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES AREN'T WORKING OR THAT THE VEHICLE IS ACCELERATING. I LIVE IN FAIRBANKS, ALASKA AND HAVING BRAKES THAT WORK IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT HERE WHERE THE ROADS ARE COVERED WITH ICE SIX MONTHS OF THE YEAR. I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND INFORMED THEM OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WASN'T A RECALL FOR THE PRIUS AND TRANSFERRED ME TO THE MAIN TOYOTA LINE TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS, BUT THAT CALL ENDED DUE TO HIGH PHONE CALL VOLUME. *TR
WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES ON MY 2010 PRIUS, THERE IS A SURGE IN THE CAR WHEN IT HIT A MANHOLE COVER (BUMP). THIS HAPPENED UNDER 20 MPH ON GENTLE BRAKE APPLICATION. UPON PUSHING ON THE PEDAL FURTHER, THE CAR RESUMED BRAKING AND STOPPED. THIS "SURGE" LASTED ONLY A FRACTION OF A SECOND BUT WAS VERY DISTURBING AND SHOULD NOT OCCUR. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS AS SHE WAS DRIVING AT 45MPH AND COMING TO A STOP WITH HER FEET ON THE BRAKES THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD BEFORE STOPPING. THE CONTACT CALL THE DEALER AND INFORM THEM OF THIS AND WAS TOLD THERE IS NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE AND THEY NEVER HEARD OF THIS FAILURE. THERE HAD BEEN NO PRIOR MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,500.
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS SEEMS TO ACCELERATE WHEN I APPLY BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND CAR GOES INTO SHALLOW POTHOLE. THIS EVENT IS REPEATABLE AND HAPPENS EVERY TIME I SLOW DOWN AT A PARTICULAR STOP SIGN WITH A POTHOLE IN FRONT OF IT. FORTUNATELY THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND I NOW KNOW TO AVOID THIS SPOT. CAR BEHAVES NORMALLY ONCE IT HAS CLEARED THE POTHOLE. THIS OCCURS AT SLOW SPEEDS ( 20MPH DOWN TO 0 ) HAS NOT HAPPENED ANYWHERE ELSE, BUT HAPPENS EVERYTIME AT THIS LOCATION. *TR
I BOUGHT A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IN JUNE OF 2009. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, I HAVE NOTICED THE BRAKES NOT WORKING PROPERLY WHEN I HAVE TRIED BRAKING WHILE GOING OVER A SPEED BUMP. INSTEAD OF SLOWING OR STOPPING, THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT ACTUALLY IS LURCHING FORWARD. IT CORRECTS ITSELF ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, BUT THERE IS THAT SECOND WHEN IT FEELS LIKE IT ISN'T GOING TO STOP. IN READING SEVERAL STORIES ABOUT REPORTED BRAKE ISSUES WITH THE PRIUS, I REALIZED THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. I HAVE PUT IN BELOW THE APPROXIMATE DATE THAT WAS THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED. *TR
MULTIPLE EVENTS/FAILURES, HERE IS A SUMMARY: 1) WHILE BRAKING OVER ROUGHER ROAD CONDITIONS -- NOT POTHOLES, BUT REGULAR ROUGHNESS/BUMPS IN ROADS -- BRAKES FEEL LIKE THEY MOMENTARILY NO LONGER FUNCTION/GO OUT. AS SOON AS YOU RETURN TO SMOOTH ROAD SURFACES, THE PROBLEM CORRECTS ITSELF. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, THE DEALERSHIP WITH WHOM I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE WERE UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM WHEN I CALLED THEM, EVEN THOUGHT IT HAS BEEN DISCUSSED IN THE NATIONAL NEWS. 2) BRAKE MALFUNCTION ON SLIPPERY ROADS. I WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND GOING VERY SLOW, LEAVING MORE THAN ENOUGH SPACE TO STOP FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I APPROACHED A RED LIGHT AND LIGHTLY APPLIED THE BRAKES. HAVING PLENTY OF SPACE TO STOP, I REALIZED THAT MY CAR WAS NOT SLOWING AS IT SHOULD. REGARDLESS OF THE PRESSURE APPLIED THERE WAS NO CHANGE. I ENDED UP STOPPING BY REARENDING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THE DAMAGE WAS MINIMAL, BUT SCARY NONETHELESS. *TR
LISTED ONE DATE, BUT NOT A SINGLE INCIDENT - HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED CAR IN AUG 2009. WHEN BRAKING AND HIT A POTHOLE OR BUMP IN THE ROAD, CAR ACCELERATES/JERKS FORWARD FOR A MOMENT. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY SO FAR THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN CLOSE TO ANOTHER CAR OR A PEDESTRIAN WHEN THIS HAS HAPPENED - THOUGH I CAME VERY CLOSE TO HITTING THE BACK OF ONE CAR THAT STOPPED QUICK IN FRONT OF ME WHEN THIS HAPPENED. *TR
I HAVE A 2010 PRIUS THAT "LURCHES" WHEN I BRAKE. THIS ONLY HAPPENS EVERY ONCE AND A WHILE. I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, THEY LOOKED IT OVER AND SAID IT WAS FINE. TO SAY THE LEAST I CONTINUE TO BE VERY CONCERNED. *TR
SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS ON DEC. 23RD 2009, I'VE EXPERIENCED MOMENTARY LOSS OF BRAKE CONTROL WHILE BRAKING. IT HAPPENS FOR LIKE A SPLIT SECOND THEN RETURN TO NORMAL. I HAVEN'T NOTICED ANY CONNECTION BETWEEN WHEN IT HAPPENS AND ROUGH ROAD SURFACES. *TR
I WANT TO REGISTER A COMPLAINT THAT I AM EXPERIENCING LOSS OF BRAKING IN MY 2010 PRIUS WHEN THE CAR HITS A BUMP OR POT HOLE IN THE ROAD. HAVE BEEN IN CONVERSATIONS WITH TOYOTA PERSONNEL. NO SATISFACTION TO DATE WITH POSSIBLE FIX. NO ACCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED THUS FAR WITH MY VEHICLE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 20 MPH, SHE ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED HESITATION WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 2747.
DRIVING A 2010 PRIUS WITH A HALF INCH OF FRESH SNOW ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AT 20 DEGREES. DRIVING AT 12 MPH, SLOWING TO A STOP AT A STOP SIGN. TWICE THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING, CAUSING ME TO COME TO A STOP BEYOND THE PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK. FORTUNATELY, NO PEDESTRIANS WERE THERE. IT FELT AS IF ABS HAD ENGAGED, CAUSING ME TO LOSE CONTROL OF BRAKING. EVEN IF THIS IS A DESIGN ELEMENT, IT CAUSED ME TO NOT BE ABLE TO STOP IN TIME. I WAS GOING 7 MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND WOULD HAVE EASILY STOPPED THE CAR IN TIME IF THIS HAD NOT HAPPENED. AFTER THIS INCIDENT I HAD TO APPROACH INTERSECTIONS AT 3-5 MPH, AFRAID THAT MY SLOW SPEED WOULD CAUSE SOMEBODY BEHIND ME TO REAR END ME. *TR
WHEN BRAKING, THE BRAKES SEEM TO LOOSE PARTIAL GRIP ON AND OFF. ALSO WHEN BRAKING OVER A POTHOLE OR UNEVEN ROAD THE CAR SEEMS TO ACCELERATE SUDDENLY AND THERE IS A FEEL OF LOSS OF CONTROL. THESE ARE BOTH VERY SCARY. *TR
I GOT INTO A WRECK WHEN DRIVING MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS BECAUSE I FEEL THE BREAKS DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. THE DRIVER IN FRONT OF ME SLAMMED ON HIS BRAKES AND I SLAMMED ON MINE, I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A 3 CAR PILEUP. I DID NOT RECEIVE A CITATION BECAUSE I WAS NOT FOLLOWING TO CLOSE, WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THE BREAKS WERE NOT WORKING AS GOOD AS THEY SHOULD HAVE. I AM IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER AND I BELIEVE THIS IS MOST LIKELY A COMPUTER PROBLEM. I DROVE A HONDA CIVIC FOR 13 YEARS AND THE BREAKS WERE MUCH SHARPER, ONCE ACTIVATED THEY STOPPED THE CAR MUCH FASTER. I NEVER GOT INTO A WRECK WITH MY CIVIC, HOWEVER, AFTER OWNING MY PRIUS FOR ONLY 2 WEEKS I GOT INTO A WRECK. THE INCIDENT NUMBER PROVIDED BY THE OKLAHOMA CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT IS 102719. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS BRAKING PROBLEM. I BOUGHT A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS APPROX 4 MONTHS AGO. DURING THE APPROX 10000 MILES I HAVE PUT ON THE CAR, I HAVE EXPERIENCED A BRAKING ISSUE APPROX 5 TO 6 TIMES. MOST TIMES I WAS BRAKING FOR A STOP SIGN IN A 30 MPH ZONE. ONCE I WAS BRAKING FOR A RED LIGHT IN A 45 MPH ZONE. EACH TIME, THERE WAS BUMPY ROAD DURING THE BRAKING, AND THE BRAKES RELEASED. I CAN'T SAY IF THE CAR ACCELERATED, OR IT JUST SEEMED THAT WAY BECAUSE OF THE BRAKE RELEASE. IT DID NOT CAUSE ANY ACCIDENTS, BUT ONCE IT WAS ON A SNOW COVERED HILL AND I SLID OUT INTO A 2 LANE 50 MPH HIGHWAY. THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC, AND THEREFORE NO ACCIDENT. ANOTHER TIME, I WAS STOPPING FROM 45 MPH AT A RED LIGHT, AND UNDER BRAKING, AGAIN ON BUMPY ROADS, THE BRAKES RELEASED AND I NEARLY HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE BRAKES RELEASED ENOUGH ALLOW ME TO PANIC AND JAM THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR. THE CAR STOPPED QUICKLY. *JB
MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WAS A WEEK OLD. I WAS EXITING ON A SLOPING DOWNWARD RAMP FROM LAKE SHORE DRIVE IN CHICAGO AND GETTING READY TO STOP AND TURN RIGHT. ROAD CONDITIONS WERE WET AND COLD BUT NOT ICY. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE CAR FAILED TO STOP. I PUMPED THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THEY "GRABBED." LUCKILY THERE WAS NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME OR BEHIND ME. IF THERE HAD BEEN A CAR IN FRONT, I WOULD SURELY HAVE REAR ENDED IT. I THOUGHT BEING A "NEW" PRIUS DRIVER I HAD DONE SOMETHING WRONG BUT IT DEFINITELY CAUSED ME SOME PANIC. I NOW HAVE 456 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE BRAKES HAVE NOT SLIPPED SINCE THE FIRST INCIDENT BUT I HAVE BEEN VERY CAUTIOUS IN APPLYING THEM IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS. *TR
AT LEAST 4 TIMES WHILE BRAKING AS I TURN ONTO ANOTHER ROAD IN MY 2010 PRIUS, THE CAR SEEMINGLY JERKS FORWARD/ACCELERATES FOR A SPLIT SECOND. IT IS VERY JARRING AND FRIGHTENING AND THERE IS CLEARLY SOMETHING WRONG. *TR
THE CRUISE CONTROL ON MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS DOES NOT ALWAYS CANCEL WHILE BRAKING. THIS HAS RESULTED IN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AFTER BRAKING WHILE THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS BEEN SET. A DRIVER EXPECTS THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL AUTOMATICALLY CANCEL WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES BUT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN UNDER LIGHT BRAKING. THIS IS EVEN MORE PRONOUNCED WHILE DRIVING UP A STEEP HILL. ON JANUARY 11TH, 2010, I WAS IN A SITUATION WHERE I ACTUALLY APPLIED THE BRAKES TO REDUCE MY SPEED WHILE TRAVELING UP A STEEP HILL AND FELT THE CAR "FIGHTING" AGAINST ME TO MAINTAIN A STEADY SPEED. AFTER I HAD SLOWED MY PRIUS TO MATCH THE SPEED OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, THE CRUISE CONTROL UNEXPECTEDLY CAUSED THE CAR TO ACCELERATE AGAIN, PLACING ME AT A LESS THAN SAFE DISTANCE TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AS WE CRESTED THE HILL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH AND APPLYING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND. SHE FELT THE VEHICLE ACCELERATING WHILE ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE. ON ONE OCCASION, WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL ON A HILL, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED DOWN THE HILL. THIS OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED BRINGING THE VEHICLE IN FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO DATE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNDER 67,000. BRAKING IRREGULARITY ON ICY SURFACES, VEHICLE FEELS LIKE REAR WHEELS SKID 4-8 FEET THEN ALL WHEELS GRAB WHEN NORMAL BRAKING FOR A STOP SIGN. ENOUGH DECELERATION TO HAVE SEATBELT GRAB AND DOG PROJECTED INTO FRONT SEAT AREA FROM REAR CARGO PLATFORM. SAME FEELING AS IF BRAKES WERE LOCKED UP WHILE MOVING ON SOLID ICE AND THE SURFACE CHANGED TO DRY ROAD. *TR
I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG, EVEN BEFORE READING THE ONLINE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE 2010 PRIUS AND ITS BRAKING PROBLEMS THAT ECHOED MY SUSPICIONS---- WHEN SOMETIMES BRAKING OVER A POTHOLE OR RAILROAD TRACKS OR ICE OR ANY KIND OF BUMP, THERE IS A SURGE OF ACCELERATION. TO THE EXTENT THAT ONE TIME MY 15 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER SAID, 'WHAT WAS THAT?" I'D DRIVEN A SAAB 93 FOR 130,000 MILES BEFORE WE RECENTLY BOUGHT THE PRIUS--I NEVER FELT ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE. *TR
WHEN I HIT PARTICULAR INTERSECTIONS OR WHEN THE GROUND IS COVERED WITH ICE OR SNOW, MY BRAKES WILL BEGIN TO SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE. BUT THEN THEY FAIL. I LOSE CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE. I HAVE TO RE-PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL FOR IT TO ACTUALLY BRAKE. IT IS SCARY AND DANGEROUS BECAUSE I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER MY CAR WHEN THE BRAKES ARE OUT AND ONE OF THESE TIMES IT IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR BRAND NEW IN JULY, IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME OVER 10 TIMES. I ONLY HAVE 5300 MILES ON MY CAR. I'M NOT SURE WHAT I CAN DO TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR
2010 PRIUS - BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS IS LOST ON ROUGH SURFACES. THE CAR GIVES THE SENSATION OF LURCHING AHEAD. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED SURGING PROBLEMS WHEN USING THE CRUISE CONTROL. RATHER THAN ACCELERATIONS TO THE PRESET SPEED, THE ACCELERATION CONTINUES PAST THE SETTING UNTIL THE CRUISE CONTROL IS CANCELED BY TAPPING THE BRAKES. *TR

THE CAR HAS HYPER-SENSITIVE BRAKES WHENEVER I AM BACKING UP FROM A PARKED SPOT (E.G. BACKING UP FROM A PARKING SPACE AT A STORE.) WHEN BACKING OUT OF A SPACE (USING JUST IDLE SPEED AND TAPPING LIGHTLY ON THE BRAKES TO CONTROL THE SPEED) TAPPING LIGHTLY RESULTS IN THE CAR BRAKES FORCEFULLY ENGAGING AND SLAMMING THE CAR TO A STOP. THIS HAPPENS ONLY AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN WARMED UP; PARKED (LIKE GOING TO THE STORE TO SHOP) AND THEN YOU RE-ENTER IT TO LEAVE. THE HYPER SENSITIVE BREAKS CONTINUE FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME WHILE I AM POSITIONING THE CAR TO GET OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AND ONTO THE ROAD. AFTER THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF THE FORCEFUL BRAKING, PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK, PUMPING ON THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES USUALLY CORRECTS THE PROBLEM. SINCE IT HAPPENS RANDOMLY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT WILL OCCUR. TOYOTA SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO THEIR ATTENTION. THEY SAID IT IS COMMON WITH PRIUSES. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I OWN A 2007 PRIUS AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN MENTIONED SEVERAL TIMES BY OTHER 2010 PRIUS OWNERS ON THE PRIUSCHAT.COM WEBSITE. *TR

WE OWN A 2010 PRIUS AND SEVERAL TIMES SINCE WE PURCHASED IT IN NOVEMBER 2009 WE HAVE NOTICED ISSUES WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM. ON EACH OCCASION WE WERE DRIVING OVER AN UNEVEN OR SLIPPERY SURFACE (E.G., POTHOLES, ICY MANHOLE COVERS) AND WHEN THE BRAKE WAS PRESSED IT DIDN'T IMMEDIATELY ENGAGE OR CATCH. RATHER, THE BRAKES ENGAGED AFTER THE CAR PASSED THE SLIPPERY OR BUMPY SURFACE. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO RESULT IN AN ACCELERATION (OR PERHAPS SLOWER DECELERATION) WHEN ONE STEPS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. ON AT LEAST ONE OCCASION, AN INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE DASH DISPLAY LIT UP. *TR
I DRIVE A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WHILE ATTEMPTING TO SLOW DOWN ON ROUGH SURFACES, THE BRAKES TEMPORARILY STOPPED WORKING FOR 1-2 SECONDS EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE EXITING THE HIGHWAY AND ATTEMPTING TO SLOW DOWN QUICKLY ON ROUGH PAVEMENT. LUCKILY, THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS IN FRONT OF ME OR THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A COLLISION. IF A CAR HAD BEEN IN FRONT OF ME ON ANY OF THE OCCASIONS THEN THERE WOULD HAVE LIKELY BEEN A COLLISION. *JB
WHEN BRAKING AT LOWER SPEEDS AND TRAVELING OVER A TRANSITION (MANHOLE COVER, PAVEMENT BREAK), THE CAR WILL ACT AS THOUGH THE BRAKES LOSE GRIP FOR A SECOND, THEN REGAIN STOPPING POWER. I HAVEN'T HIT ANYTHING, BUT IT'S BEEN UNSETTLING. *TR

INCIDENT 1: WEATHER CONDITION - COLD AND DRY. ROAD CONDITION - BUMPY, WASHBOARD JUST BEFORE A STOP SIGN PRESSED ON BRAKE PEDAL, CAR SLOWED UNTIL WASHBOARD SECTION OF ROAD CAME UP, THEN BRAKE SEEMED TO DISAPPEAR BRIEFLY AND THEN CAR STOPPED. VERY FRIGHTENING. IF THERE WAS SOMEONE IN FRONT OF ME I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. NO INJURIES, NO CRASH. INCIDENT 2 WEATHER CONDITION: SNOW, SNOW FALLING, 1" ON ROADWAY. LOCATION: PARKING LOT. CAME AROUND CORNER VERY SLOWLY DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS. ABS CAME ON EARLY WHEN APPLYING BRAKES AND THE BRAKES APPEARED NOT TO WORK FOR A BRIEF TIME AND THEN THEY WORKED BUT STOP WAS MUCH LONGER THAN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. I ALMOST HIT A WALL. *TR
