I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING A FAILURE OF THE BRAKES ON UNEVEN PAVEMENT OR WHEN GOING OVER MAN HOLE COVERS. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME THREE TIMES IN THE FIRST MONTH OF OWNERSHIP OF MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. *TR
HIS HAPPENS ABOUT ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS WITH OUR NEW 2010 PRIUS. WHEN WE PRESS THE BRAKE THE CAR ACCELERATES FOR A SECOND. IT SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS. WHEN I CALL MY DEALERSHIP THEY HAVE BEEN DISMISSIVE AND SAID IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE MATS, WE TRIED DIFFERENT MATS AND EVEN TOOK THEM OUT AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. I HAVEN'T CALLED THE DEALERSHIP I N A WHILE BUT LAST TIME THEY STILL SAID IT WAS A FLOOR MAT PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON UNEVEN ROADS, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP IMMEDIATELY WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE VEHICLE ALSO LUNGED FORWARD. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 5300.
ANTILOCK BRAKES DON'T SEEM TO WORK EFFECTIVELY ON MY 2010 PRIUS, BROUGHT JUNE 2009. I'VE BEEN DRIVING FOR 48 YRS IN UPSTATE NEW YORK; AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER IN THE SNOW/ICE ROADS. THIS 2010 PRIUS IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE ON SNOW/ICE ROADS. I THOUGHT MAYBE THE TIRES WERE LOUSY OR THAT I'M NOT ACCUSTOMED TO ANTILOCK BRAKES. BUT NOW THAT I'M HEARING ABOUT THIS VERY PROBLEM WITH OTHER 2010 PRIUS, I'M CONVINCED THAT THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE CAR'S ANTILOCK BRAKES. IF THERE'S ANY SNOW ON THE ROAD, I KNOW THAT I NEED ALOT OF ROOM TO COMPLETE A STOP AND THIS IS NOT GOING FAST AT ALL. I'VE HAD TWO NEAR CRASHES SO FAR AND AT VERY LOW SPEEDS. *TR
I HAVE A 2010 PRIUS PURCHASED IN DEC 2009. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE LURCHING FORWARD WHEN GOING OVER BUMPY ROADS (INCLUDING POTHOLES) WHEN THERE ARE ICY CONDITIONS AND MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 3 TIMES. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS - SOMETIMES WHEN BRAKING THE CAR HAS A POWER SURGE AND YOU START MOVING FASTER. *TR
I OWN A BRAND NEW 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WITH APPROXIMATELY 3,000 MILES AT THIS POINT. I HAVE EXPERIENCE ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS A COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY WHEN I FORCEFULLY APPLIED THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO COME TO STOP WHILE TRAVELING OVER A POTHOLE OR A SERIOUS PAVEMENT DEFORMATION. MY WIFE HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM ON A COUPLE OF INSTANCES TOO. THE LOSS OF BRAKES IS VERY SHORT IN DURATION BUT IS ABSOLUTELY FRIGHTENING SINCE THE CAR TRAVELS QUITE A BIT BEFORE THE BRAKES TAKE EFFECT AGAIN. ON ONE OCCASION THE PRIUS WAS ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF A CAR LENGTH INTO THE INTERSECTION BEFORE IT CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS HAPPENED WHILE TRAVELING ONLY 35 MPH ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AND ATTEMPTING TO COME TO A FULL STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. FORTUNATELY NO OTHER CARS WERE TRAVELING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AT THE TIME. I ATTEMPTED TO CALL TOYOTA ABOUT THIS ISSUE BUT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THROUGH TO A LIVE PERSON AT THIS TIME DUE TO THE VOLUME OF CALLS GENERATED BY THE RECALL. *TR

I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 BRAKING SYSTEM. BRAKE FAILS SOMETIMES ON STOP SIGNS. THE BRAKE CONTROL IS LOST FOR A FEW SECONDS AT THAT TIME. I FEEL LIKE THE CONTROL IS LOST. THE VEHICLE MOVES FORWARD AND STOP. I SPOKE WITH MY NEIGHBORHOOD DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT TOYOTA IS WORKING ON THIS ISSUE AND NOTHING CAN BE DONE UNTIL A RECALL IS ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TW *TR
THE BRAKES ON OUR 2010 PRIUS HAVE REPEATEDLY HAD PROBLEMS. MOST HAVE OCCURED WITH MY WIFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. SHE HAD TOLD ME SEVERAL MONTHS AGO ABOUT THE CAR FEELING LIKE IT WAS "SLIDING" OR THE BRAKES NOT BEING VERY EFFECTIVE FOR A SHORT TIME. I PASSED THIS OFF AS THE THE CAR BEING DIFFERENT THAN OTHER CARS SINCE IT WAS A HYBRID. THEN ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO I HAD IT HAPPEN TO ME. WHILE TURNING AND GOING OVER A SMALL HUMP IN A DRIVEWAY ABOUT 15 MPH, THE BRAKES JUST SEEMED TO RELEASE FOR ABOUT A HALF SECOND AND I ALMOST RAN INTO AN IRON GATE. I CANNOT DESCRIBE THE OTHER EVENTS THAT MY WIFE HAS HAD IN DETAIL BECAUSE OCCURRED OVER THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS AND SHE DOES NOT REMEMBER THE SPECIFIC DETAILS BESIDES THAT THEY HAPPENED OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES. *CN
AFTER OWNING THE CAR FOR 1 MONTH, I HAVE NOTICED THAT ON OCCASION, WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKES, THE CAR WILL AUTOMATICALLY ACCELERATE FOR A SECOND BEFORE BREAKING. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME, BUT IT DOES HAPPEN A FEW TIMES DAY. I HAVE NO WAY OF FIGURING OUT WHAT COULD BE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS SINCE IT JUST HAPPENS WHEN I AM BRAKING JUST BEFORE IT COMPLETELY STOPS, NO MATTER WHAT SPEED I AM DRIVING. *CN
TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 - IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME, MULTIPLE TIMES THIS WINTER, DURING ICY ROADS THAT WHEN I TRY TO BRAKE THE CAR ACCELERATES AS IF SOMEONE HIT THE CAR FROM BEHIND. I OWN A TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 MODEL. I ACQUIRED THIS VEHICLE IN SEP OF 2009. I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN THE CAR WAS TRAVELING ON A BUMPY ROAD, THE BRAKES DOESN'T SEEM TO ENGAGE. IT SEEM TO ACCELERATE. I HAVE NOTICED THIS ONLY IN SLOW SPEEDS AND IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME THAT IT COULD BE A MANUFACTURING MISTAKE. I BLAMED IT ON THE ROAD CONDITION. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES AND JAN 10 WAS AN APPROXIMATE DATE. NOW REALIZING THAT I SHOULD HAVE VOICED MY CONCERN EARLIER. DURING BRAKING, MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WOULD "LUNGE" FORWARD AS THOUGH THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK FOR A FEW SECONDS WHEN "HITTING" SMALL BUMPS IN THE ROAD. THIS HAPPENED TWICE. *TR
I HAVE HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. I HAVE FOUND THE BRAKES TO BE UNDEPENDABLE IN SITUATIONS OF UNEVEN PAVEMENT OR ANYTHING BUT PERFECT ROAD CONDITIONS. AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE CAR CONTINUES TO MOVE FORWARD AS IF THE BRAKES WERE NEVER APPLIED. THIS CONTINUES FOR SEVERAL SECONDS CAUSING A DANGEROUS DELAY IN PERFORMANCE OF THE BRAKES. THIS HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES THIS WINTER, AND IS UNFORTUNATELY NOT PREDICTABLE. ONE INSTANCE LED TO MY CAR SLAMMING INTO AN SNOW AND ICE BANK DAMAGING THE LOWER FRONT PART OF THE CAR. ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE DRIVEN WOULD HAVE STOPPED LONG BEFORE HAVING CONTACT WITH THE BANK, AS THE PAVEMENT WAS DRY YET UNEVEN. ANOTHER ISSUE I HAVE HAD IS UNRELIABLE ACCELERATION, AGAIN A HESITATION OF SEVERAL SECONDS AFTER THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS PUSHED THAT IS DANGEROUS AS WELL MAKING PERFORMANCE UNPREDICTABLE. BOTH THESE SITUATIONS LEAVES ME UNCERTAIN OF WHAT KIND OF PERFORMANCE I CAN EXPECT FORM BOTH THE BRAKES AND ACCELERATOR AT ANY GIVEN TIME. SINCE I DRIVE MY DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL EACH DAY, I AM NERVOUS EVERY TIME I GET INTO THE CAR AND CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY DAUGHTER AND THE OTHER STUDENTS. I ALSO REGULARLY WAKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT FEARFUL ABOUT DRIVING MY PRIUS TO SCHOOL AND WORK THE FOLLOWING DAY. SO FAR I HAVE DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT THE SITUATION AS TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS ARE SO SWAMPED BY OTHER RECALL APPOINTMENTS THAT IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET AN APPOINTMENT FOR ANYTHING BUT A RECALL. SO FAR TOYOTA HAS NOT CONTACTED ME ABOUT THE BRAKE RECALL SOLUTIONS OR RECALL PROCESS, SO I AM AT A LOSS ABOUT WHERE TO TURN. *TR
WHILE BRAKING ON A SHORT HILL WITH UNEVEN PAVEMENT SURFACE VEHICLE BRAKES FAILED MOMENTARILY AND THEN TOOK HOLD AS I PRESSED HARDER ON THE PEDAL. THIS OCCURRED 3 TIMES ON THE SAME HILL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED WHEN DRIVING DOWNHILL AND ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE, THE BRAKES WOULD NOT ENGAGE AND INTERMITTENTLY COULD NOT BE DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT HAD RECEIVED REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V039000 (SERVICE BRAKES, AIR: ANTILOCK: CONTROL UNIT/MODULE). THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND NO FURTHER REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED VIA EMAIL AND THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE. THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 9,000. MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS LOSES BRAKING ABILITY AND LUNGES FORWARD WHILE BRAKING ON ANY UNEVEN SURFACE I.E. POTHOLE, MANHOLE COVER, BUMP METAL PLATE OR STRIP, ETC... THIS HAS LEAD TO SEVERAL NEAR MISS COLLISIONS AND DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF TIME I SPEND IN THE CAR HAPPENS AN AVERAGE OF 3 TIMES PER DAY. BECAUSE I FEAR FOR MY OWN SAFETY I DO NOT ALLOW PASSENGERS IN MY CAR AND I WILL NOT LET ANYONE ELSE DRIVE MY CAR. I'VE HAD TO ADJUST MY DRIVING TO TRY AND COMPENSATE FOR NO BRAKING ABILITY AT ANY GIVEN TIME. I HAVE NOW REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO MY DEALER TOYOTA OF MERRILLVILLE IN PERSON 3 TIMES AND OVER THE PHONE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND EACH TIME I WAS TOLD THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THEREFORE THERE WAS NO FIX THEY COULD OFFER. THEY ALSO TELL ME THAT I AM THE ONLY CUSTOMER REPORTING THIS TYPE OF CONCERN BUT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONNECT WITH MANY PRIUS OWNERS EXPERIENCING THIS LOSS OF BRAKING WHILE OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT. I BELIEVE TOYOTA IS DOWNPLAYING THIS PROBLEM AT THE RISK OF PUBLIC SAFETY. *TR
THE BRAKES RELEASE FOR A "SECOND" OR TWO WHEN THE CAR HITS A BUMP, ESPECIALLY IN COLD OR WET WEATHER. MY CAR HAS SLID THROUGH INTERSECTIONS IN THE WINTER A NUMBER OF TIMES BECAUSE OF THIS. I HAVE TO START BRAKING THREE BLOCKS AHEAD IN BAD WEATHER BECAUSE I NEVER KNOW WHEN THE BRAKES WILL RELEASE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
CAR DID NOT BRAKE PROPERLY AND SLIGHTLY SURGED FORWARD ON MANY OCCASIONS WHEN I DROVE OVER A MANHOLE COVER AND SPEED BUMPS AT LOWER SPEEDS. IN ONE OCCASION, I REAR ENDED A CAR AND CRACKED MY LICENSE PLATE FRAME BUT SINCE THERE WAS NO FURTHER DAMAGE ON ANY OF THE CARS INVOLVED, WE AGREED TO DRIVE AWAY. *TR
I HAVE A NEW GEN III 2010 PRIUS II AND HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN BRAKING THE CAR SEEMS TO SURGE FORWARD BEFORE DECELERATING WHEN I HIT A SERIES OF BUMPS OR A POTHOLE. IT IS UN-NERVING IN THAT EVEN AT SLOW SPEEDS LIKE WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT A STOP LIGHT, THE CAR WANTS TO CONTINUE FORWARD WITH AN UNCONTROLLED BURST. I HAVE CHANGED MY DRIVING SLIGHTLY TO GIVE MY SELF MOVE STOPPING ROOM, BUT SOMETIMES THERE IS A SERIES OF BUMPS IN THE ROAD AND IT JUST HAPPENS. I HAVE 10,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE AND THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 8 TO TEN TIMES TO ME, USUALLY WHEN I'M NOT EXPECTING ANYTHING TO HAPPEN BUT A SLOW BRAKING STOP. AS AN INCIDENT DATE IS REQUESTED, I AM PUTTING IN JUST ONE OF THE DATES THAT THIS OCCURRED, I HAVE NOT KEPT A RECORD OF THE DAYS, TRAVEL CONDITIONS, OR TIMES THAT THE INCIDENTS OCCURRED. THIS HAPPENS EVERYTIME MY WIFE DRIVES OVER A PARTICULAR SET OF TRAIN TRACKS NEAR WHERE WE LIVE. ALSO THIS OF COURSE HAS HAPPENED OVER TIME AND THE MILEAGE GIVEN IS ACTUALLY FROM THE DAY WE GOT IT TILL NOW, THIS IS AN ON GOING EVENT. *TR
BRAKES MOMENTARILY DISENGAGED ON 2 OCCASIONS WHILE I WAS TRAVELING AT A LOW SPEED ON A SLIPPERY SURFACE. *TR
SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHEN PASSING OVER ROUGH SPOTS(HAS HAPPENED WITH MANHOLE COVER). BRAKING STOPS THE ACCELERATION. *CN
THE BRAKES ON MY 2010 PRIUS DID NOT ENGAGE TWO TIMES WHILE DRIVING IN SNOWY CONDITIONS THIS WINTER. I ALMOST CRASHED INTO A CAR BOTH TIMES.
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS - WHILE BRAKING CAR HAS OCCASIONALLY LUNGED FORWARD - SEEMINGLY WHEN HITTING AN UNEVEN SECTION OF ROAD. FEELS AS IF CAR SUDDENLY HIT A PATCH OF ICE -NONE PRESENT OF COURSE. MORE NOTICEABLE WHEN TURNING. THIS HAS HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY 6 DIFFERENT TIMES. *TR
FROM AUGUST 1ST OF 2009, I HAD BEEN DRIVING A 2010 PRIUS. IT IS A GREAT VEHICLE FOR ECONOMY BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH BRAKES. WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED AND IF THERE IS A BUMP, THE VEHICLE JUMPS FORWARD OR ACCELERATES AND THE STOPPING DISTANCE INCREASES. USUALLY A SAFE DISTANCE BEHIND A VEHICLE IS WHEN THE TAIL PIPE OF THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF YOU IS VISIBLE. WITH THE PRIUS, TO BE SAFE, I STOP AT LEAST TEN FEET BEHIND A VEHICLE BECAUSE IF THERE IS A BUMP, THE VEHICLE WILL JUMP FORWARD. *TR
APPLIED BRAKES AT A STOP LIGHT. THE PRIUS (PURCHASED IN JULY OF 2009) RAN OVER A BUMP, AND IT SEEMED LIKE THE BRAKE DISENGAGED. I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL AND REAPPLIED THE BRAKES. THE BRAKES SEEMED TO ENGAGE AND CAME TO A STOP. *JB
UPON BRAKING APPROACHING A STOPLIGHT, MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS HIT A POTHOLE AND SUDDENLY JERKED FORWARD, THEN RETURNED TO SLOWING. I KEPT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR STOPPED NORMALLY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20- 25 MPH ON A SLIGHTLY SNOW COVERED ROAD SURFACE THERE WAS PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, FOLLOWED BY AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THE DRIVER CONTINUOUSLY APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SLOW DOWN WHILE PROCEEDING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. AN OPPOSING VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE POLICE WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,700. UPDATED 03/12/10. *LJ THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN HE APPROACHED A STOP SIGN WITH ADEQUATE DISTANCE TO STOP, PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP, HE HAD TO PRESS HARDER TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. UPDATED 07/13/10.*JB
CONTINUAL BRAKING PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR. AT LOW SPEEDS APPLYING THE BRAKES ON A SLIPPERY OR BUMPY SURFACE, THERE IS A COMPLETE LACK OF BRAKING FOR A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THE CAR SEEMS TO ACCELERATE. THIS WAS SUPPOSEDLY FIXED BY A TOYOTA RECALL. (SSC AOB) WHICH I HAD PERFORMED. STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM. I HAVE COMPLAINED MANY TIMES TO DIFFERENT TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENTS. THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. (THIS LAST TIME THEY TOLD ME THAT, AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN ROAD TEST IT.) HAVE COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA CORPORATE 5/26/2010, FILE #[XXX]. THEY CALLED ME BACK, ON 6/7/2010, STILL NO FIX YET, WILL CONTACT ME WHEN A FIX IS AVAILABLE. OUR 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IS EXPERIENCING PERIODIC, TEMPORARY BRAKE FAILURE/UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. MY WIFE IS THE PRIMARY DRIVER AND STATES THAT ON 4-5 OCCASIONS OVER THE PAST 9 MONTHS, WHEN BRAKING OVER UNEVEN SURFACES AT SPEEDS OF 10-30 MPH, THERE CAN BE A TEMPORARY PERIOD OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION LASTING 1-2 SECONDS. *CN
WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES ON A BUMPY ROAD THE CAR SPEEDS UP. *TR
THERE APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES ON MY 2010 PRIUS. THERE IS A SUDDEN LOSS OF BRAKING FORCE IF I APPLY THE BRAKES WHILE ROLLING OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT. WHEN IT FIRST OCCURRED, IT WAS ON SNOW. ONCE I SAILED INTO THE INTERSECTION. THE SECOND TIME, I ALMOST REAR ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I WENT HOME AND THEN DROVE MY WIFE'S ACURA IN THE SAME SNOWY CONDITIONS AT THE SAME INTERSECTIONS AND DIDN'T EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS. I KNOW THE PROBLEM WASN'T DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS. I HAVE SINCE THEN BEEN ABLE TO REPRODUCE IT IN DRY CONDITIONS. THE COMMON CONDITION IS BRAKING OVER UNEVEN SURFACES. SOME PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT IT FEELS LIKE SUDDEN SURGE OF ACCELERATION. THE GASOLINE ENGINE ISN'T (USUALLY) ON WHILE THE CAR IS BRAKING. THE SURGE ISN'T DUE TO THE ELECTRIC MOTOR MALFUNCTIONING BECAUSE ON SMOOTH SURFACES, IT BEHAVES AS EXPECTED. I BELIEVE WHAT THEY FEEL IS A LOSS OF BRAKING POWER WHICH MAKES THE CAR FEEL LIKE IT IS ACCELERATING. SOME PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS IS NORMAL ABS BEHAVIOR. I'VE OWNED SEVERAL CARS WITH ABS AND THIS IS NOT THE SAME NOR WHAT I WOULD CONSIDER 'NORMAL' BEHAVIOR. IT COULD BE A COMBINATION OF THE UNEVEN SURFACE WITH ABS, REGENERATIVE BRAKES, FRICTION BRAKES, SUSPENSION SPRING RATE AND TIRES. WHILE NORMAL ABS WILL EXHIBIT LESS BRAKING FORCE AND LONGER DISTANCES TO STOP WHEN IT IS ENGAGED, IT ISN'T THE SAME AS THIS CONDITION. OR AT LEAST IT SHOULDN'T BE THIS TOUCHY TO ENGAGE. WHEN IT HAPPENS, IT IS RATHER ALARMING. I REALLY LIKE THIS CAR. I THINK IT IS A GREAT PIECE OF AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY. HOWEVER THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. I CAN'T ACCEPT IT BEING A NORMAL QUIRK OF THE CAR. I TRAVEL WITH MY WIFE AND YOUNG KIDS IN THIS CAR. IF I CAN'T BE MADE TO FEEL SAFE IN THE CAR, I WILL BE TRADING IT IN SOONER THAN EXPECTED. *TR
MY VEHICLE HAS GONE INTO A SLIDE WHEN BRAKING...FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES ARE LOCKED ALTHOUGH I HAVE ANTILOCK BRAKES. I HAVE SLID INTO AN INTERSECTION TWICE AND I WOULD SAY THERE WAS SAND LEFT OVER FROM SNOW MELT. THIS IS A BRAND NEW CAR AND I DEFINITELY CAN FEEL A DIFFERENCE THAT HAS CAUSED ALARM POSSIBLY 4 OR 5 TIMES IN 4 MONTHS. *TR
WHEN DRIVING AT MODERATE SPEEDS ON CITY/SURFACE STREETS IN MY 2010 PRIUS, A BRAKING PROBLEM OCCURS. IF I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD WHILE BRAKING, THE VEHICLE LURCHES FORWARD AS IF THE BRAKES HAVE DISENGAGED, EVEN THOUGH I AM STILL PRESSING THE BRAKE. I PUSH THE BRAKES DOWN HARDER AND NOTHING HAPPENS. A FEW SECONDS LATER, THE BRAKES COME BACK INTO PLAY AND THE CAR SLOWS DOWN AGAIN. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES, AND I HAVE NARROWLY AVOIDED ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY THIS SEVERAL TIMES. *TR
I BOUGHT AT 2010 PRIUS ON NEW YEAR'S EVE, AND SINCE THEN, ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS (PROBABLY ABOUT 7-8 TIMES) WHEN HITTING A POTHOLE, THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT LUNGES FORWARD, OR ALMOST ACCELERATES. I HAVE A 2010 PRIUS I PURCHASED IN OCTOBER OF 2009. TWO DIFFERENT TIMES I WAS DRIVING ON ICE AND WAS SLIDING WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES. I OWN A TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 AND I LIVE IN A SNOWY CITY. I HAVE EXPERIENCED "UNUSUAL" PROBLEMS WITH BRAKES THREE TIMES IN MONTH OF JANUARY. FIRST TIME I WAS TAKING MY TWO CHILDREN TO SCHOOL AND AS I WAS APPROACHING STOP SIGN, I SLOWED DOWN AS USUAL AND APPLIED BRAKE. WHEN I WAS ALMOST AT THE STOP SIGN, I REALIZED THAT CAR WASN'T STOPPING, SO I PANICKED AND PRESSED BRAKE PEDAL HARD AND THEN I NOTICED THE ABS STARTED TO WORK AND I PASSED THE STOP SIGN ABOUT THREE METERS, ROAD WAS COVERED WITH SNOW. SECOND TIME I WAS GOING TO WORK ON A WET ROAD AND NOT ICY. I WAS APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND AS I SLOWED DOWN I ALSO CHANGED LANE AND APPLIED BRAKE. BEFORE THE TRAFFIC LIGHT I NOTICED THAT AS IF I WAS NOT BRAKING, SO I PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKES AND IT STOPPED. THIRD TIME I DROPPED MY CHILDREN TO SCHOOL AND STARTED TO GO TO WORK AND I EXPERIENCED SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH BRAKES, WET ROAD AND NOT ICY, BUT THIS TIME I PANICKED BECAUSE OF SOME CARS ON THE ROAD, I PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKE AND IT STOPPED IN FRONT OF THE STOP SIGN AND I HAD TO BACK UP. SO I CALLED MY HUSBAND AT HIS WORK AS I WAS VERY NERVOUS ABOUT THIS SITUATION. HE SAID IT IS PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER AND MAY BE BECAUSE I AM VERY CAREFUL ABOUT THE NEW CAR. SO HE SAID THAT HE WOULD TEST DRIVE THE CAR TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY PROBLEM. HE DROVE THE CAR TO WORK FOR TWO WEEKS, 700 MILES, AND HE TOLD ME THAT HE HAD ONLY ONCE "UNUSUAL" PROBLEM WITH BRAKES SIMILAR TO WHAT I HAD. TWO DAYS AGO I HEARD ABOUT PRIUS BRAKE PROBLEMS AND I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER. DEALER SAID THAT INSPECTION HAS FOUND NO PROBLEM. AND HERE I AM DRIVING THIS CAR AGAIN. *TR
I HAVE ON AT LEAST 4 OCCASIONS EXPERIENCED THE BRAKING ISSUE (THAT IS BEING INVESTIGATED) ON MY 2010 PRIUS. IT HAPPENS WHEN I GO OVER RAILROAD TRACKS, OR HIT A POTHOLE. PLEASE ADD MY COMPLAINT TO THE OTHERS THAT REPORT SIMILAR PROBLEMS.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH THE CONTACT APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HER HEAD AND A TORN MENISCUS TO HER KNEE. THE TREATMENT FOR HER RELATED INJURIES HAD BEEN ON-GOING SINCE THE CRASH OCCURRED. THE CONTACT NO LONGER OWNS THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER ASSUMED OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000.
PRIUS 2010 PURCHASED 12/26/2009. WHEN I'M BRAKING DOWNHILL AND HIT A POT-HOLE, I GET A BIG KICK FROM THE CAR. IT FEELS LIKE THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGES. IT'S HAPPENED A FEW TIMES, AND IS PREDICTABLE IN CERTAIN ROUTES. OVER TIME, I'VE ADJUSTED TO IT AND LEARNED TO APPLY THE BRAKES DIFFERENTLY. I'M ALSO MORE CAREFUL TO AVOID THE POTHOLES. IT'S NOT HAPPENING AS OFTEN NOW. IT'S STARTLING, BUT I'M NOT SURE IT'S DANGEROUS. *TR
I HAVE A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS THAT HAS OFTEN QUIT BRAKING WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON (A) A BUMPY DIRT ROAD (2 TIMES), (B) BUMPY PAVED ROAD (BUMPS CAUSED BY COMPACTED SNOW) (2 TIMES) AND (C) A LARGE DIP IN A ROAD NEAR MY HOUSE (APPROX.10 TIMES). THE LAPSE IN BRAKING IS PROBABLY LESS THAN A SECOND, BUT SCARES ME EVERY TIME. BEFORE MY PRIUS, I HAVE ALWAYS OWNED ALL-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES, AND I JUST ATTRIBUTED THE LACK OF BRAKING ON THE FACT THAT I NO LONGER HAVE ALL WHEEL DRIVE. BUT NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT. THAT SHOULDN'T AFFECT THE BRAKING! I CAN PRETTY MUCH COUNT ON THIS HAPPENING OVER A BUMPY ROAD, OR JUST ONE BIG BUMP, SO IF SOMEONE WANTS TO DRIVE MY CAR AND SEE WHAT IT DOES, THAT IS FINE WITH ME.
