1. WE PURCHASED A 2010 PRIUS SIX MONTHS AGO. WE HAVE HAD FOUR INCIDENTS BRAKING WHERE WE FEEL THE ABS OVER-COMPENSATES WHEN THE WHEELS ARE ON DIFFERENT SURFACES (E.G. GRAVEL/PAVEMENT, PUDDLE/PAVEMENT, ETC.). TWO OF THE FOUR INCIDENTS ARE NOTABLE BECAUSE IT FELT AS THOUGH I HAD LOST CONTROL OF BRAKING AND I WAS GOING TO 1. REAR-END ANOTHER CAR AND 2. GO OFF AN EMBANKMENT. I AM NOT AN AGGRESSIVE DRIVER. TODAY, I WAS ALARMED TO LEARN,--REPORTED IN THE NEWS--THAT OTHER DRIVERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. TOYOTA HAS CHECKED OUT MY CAR (AT THE 5,000 MILE OIL CHANGE), BUT REPORTS NOTHING WRONG. SOMETHING IS WRONG! IF FEELS AS THOUGH THE ABS OVER-COMPENSATES ON ALL FOUR WHEELS WHEN THE SURFACE UNDER ONE WHEEL IS "IRREGULAR" AND CAUSES THE ABS TO REACT TO SLIPPING/SLIDING. I'VE OWNED SIX CARS WITH ABS, BUT NONE OF THEM GAVE ME THE FEELING THAT I'D LOST CONTROL BRAKING. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS CAR'S ABS AND I AM CONCERNED THAT TOYOTA WILL NOT ADDRESS IT IN A PROMPT MANNER. YOUR AUTO-FILL FORM REQUIRES THAT I SPECIFY A DATE OF INCIDENT. FOUR TIMES, BETWEEN NOVEMBER 2009 AND JANUARY 2010, WE FEEL WE'VE LOST CONTROL OF OUR ABILITY TO BRAKE THIS CAR AT VERY REASONABLE (BRAKING) SPEEDS AND DISTANCES. IT'S NOT JUST ONE INCIDENT. *TR
2010 PRIUS BRAKE FAILURES AT LEAST 4 TIMES IN PAST 6 MONTHS AFTER HITTING POTHOLE OR ICE ON ROAD AT ABOUT 30MPH OR LESS; BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO FLOOR AND CAR SORT OF SHIMMIES. *TR
I HAVE A 2010 PRIUS PURCHASED IN LATE JULY 2009. I HAVE DEFINITELY HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM IN WINTER WEATHER ON SLIPPERY SURFACES. WHEN BRAKING, IT FEELS LIKE THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM FAILS AND THE WHEELS LOCK UP MOMENTARILY. I DON'T LET MY WIFE OR KIDS DRIVE THE CAR IN SLIPPERY CONDITIONS. THIS IS DEFINITELY AN ISSUE FOR ME AND I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND PURSUED. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALER - ALDERMAN'S TOYOTA OF RUTLAND, VT ABOUT THE ISSUE. THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. *TR
I OWN A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, AND LIKE MANY HAVE EXPERIENCED THE BRAKES "CUTTING OUT" WHEN SLOWING DOWN AND GOING OVER A ROUGH SECTION OF ROAD. I DRIVE THROUGHOUT THE HOUSTON, TEXAS AREA AND HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE HAPPEN MANY TIMES, USUALLY UNEXPECTEDLY. THERE ARE A FEW PLACES I DRIVE REGULARLY THAT CREATE THE ISSUE AND I ANTICIPATE THEM AND ADJUST MY DRIVING ACCORDINGLY. *TR
I'M THE OWNER OF A 2010 PRIUS AND TWICE NOW WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES FIRMLY DURING A RAIN SOAKED DAY WHILE GOING OVER THE TEMPORARY STEEL PLATES USED DURING ROAD REPAIRS AS SOON AS THE BACK WHEELS HIT THE SURFACE THE CAR SHOOTS A HEAD AS IF THE BRAKES ARE TEMPORARILY NOT APPLYING PRESSURE AT ALL. NO ONE WAS HURT IT IS JUST VERY UNSETTLING . *TR
WHEN DRIVING THROUGH AN ALLEY, AT THE END, BEFORE I STOP FOR THE STREET, THERE IS A POTHOLE. TWICE I HIT IT WHILE BRAKING FOR THE STOP SIGN AT THE STREET AND SOMETHING FELT WEIRD, LIKE THE BRAKE DIDN'T QUITE HOLD. HONESTLY I THOUGHT I MOVED MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE OR SOMETHING. I THINK IT MAY HAVE HAPPENED ONE OTHER TIME. I AM CONSCIOUS OF IF BECAUSE I WANTED TO BE AWARE IF I WAS DOING SOMETHING WRONG SO I COULD CORRECT IT. *TR
DURING THE FIRST SNOWFALL IN DEC 09 I WAS DRIVING MY WIFE'S 2010 PRIUS BECAUSE I WANTED TO TAKE THIS NEW CAR OUT TO SEE HOW IT WOULD PERFORM IN ICY CONDITIONS. AS I APPROACHED A ROUNDABOUT/TRAFFIC CIRCLE AT LESS THAN 10 MPH THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AT FIRST. I NEARLY REAR ENDED THE SUV THAT WAS STOPPED AT THE CIRCLE. THE GROUND WAS COVERED IN ICE. I HAD TO SPIN THE CAR AT AN ANGLE TO AVOID HITTING THE SUV. I AM NOW READING THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I READ THAT TOYOTA HAS ADDRESSED THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL. I HAVE EXPERIENCED BRAKE SLIPPAGE/NOT ENGAGING WHEN FIRST PRESSING ON THE BRAKES 6-10 TIMES WITH THIS CAR. APPLYING THE BRAKES OVER POTHOLES SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME EFFECT BUT IT SEEMS MORE DANGEROUS THAT THIS HAPPENS ON ICY ROADS SINCE I LIVE IN THE FROZEN TUNDRA OF GREEN BAY WISCONSIN. *TR
TOYOTA PRIUS 2010: WHEN THE CAR HITS A BUMP IN THE ROAD IT WILL ACCELERATE SO FAST BY ITSELF WHICH CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS AND FATAL. IT CAN HIGHLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF THE DRIVER CANNOT STEP ON THE BRAKES IN TIME TO STOP THE CAR ACCELERATION. I WENT TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER HERE IN QUEENS NEW YORK AND TO MY SURPRISE THE REP SAID" I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THAT COMPLAINT" AND DID NOT PURSUE THE MATTER AT ALL. ANOTHER SAFETY CONCERN IS THAT I HIT A SMALL POTHOLE AND THE WHOLE TIRE WAS DAMAGED ON MY BRAND NEW 2010 PRIUS WHICH I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR BARELY TWO MONTHS. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THESE SAFETY PROBLEMS AND DO NOT REALLY KNOW WHERE TO START GETTING ASSISTANCE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS BRAKES BRIEFLY FAIL DURING LOW SPEED BREAKING. CAR FEELS LIKE IT SURGED FORWARD EVEN WHEN FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. *TR
I PURCHASED A NEW TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 IN DECEMBER 2009. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY I NOTICED BRAKING WAS 'ODD' AND I FELT LIKE WHEN I WOULD BRAKE SOMETIMES, THE CAR JOLTED FORWARD BEFORE STOPPING. AFTER SOME SELF MONITORING, I REALIZED THIS PARTICULARLY HAPPENED WHEN CROSSING RAILROAD TRACKS NEAR MY HOME EN ROUTE TO WORK. I HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT BUT INSTEAD, HAVE TRIED TO BRAKE MORE SLOWLY AND IN GENERAL THIS HAS HELPED. HOWEVER, A FEW TIMES IN TRAFFIC I HAVE HAD TO STOP ABRUPTLY AND ABOUT HALF THE TIME IT DOES THE SAME THING, CAUSING ME TO FULLY SLAM ON THE BRAKES. IN THE PAST I HAVE HAD SEVERAL TOYOTA CARS AND RARELY NEEDED THE FULL FORCE OF MY ANTI-LOCK BRAKES IN SUCH SITUATIONS. I HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO THE DEALER AND HE REQUESTED I WAIT UNTIL THE 'BREAK-IN' PERIOD WAS OVER BEFORE MAKING ANY DECISIONS. THAT BREAK-IN PERIOD WAS DEFINED AS 5000 MILES AND I AM NOW AT ABOUT 4800, AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT CHANGED. WHEN I REPORTED IT TO THE DEALER, I HAD ABOUT 3000 MILES ON THE CAR, AND IT WAS ABOUT ONE MONTH AFTER PURCHASE (EARLY JANUARY). AT THE TIME, THE BRAKES WERE CHECKED AND NO PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED. TODAY I CONTACTED THE DEALER ABOUT TURNING THE VEHICLE BACK IN SINCE I AM CONCERNED AND NOT HAPPY WITH THE VEHICLE'S PERFORMANCE. *TR
I HAVE CONTACTED MY AUTO MANUFACTURER ABOUT A STEERING PROBLEM. THE CAR WILL NOT DRIVE IN STRAIGHT LINE, IT IS ETHER GOING LEFT OR RIGHT. THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO MY COMPLAINT. I HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL DRIVING THIS CAR BECAUSE IT WILL WONDER OFF OF THE ROAD. *TR
WHEN DRIVING MY PRIUS, I HAVE NOTICED THE FEELING OF BEING THROWN FORWARD FOR A SPLIT SECOND AFTER I HAVE APPLIED THE BRAKES WHEN ON AN UNEVEN SURFACE, IE A GRATE IN THE ROAD. THIS OCCURS NEARLY EVERYTIME I ROUND A CORNER BY MY APARTMENT IN WHICH I AM FORCED TO BRAKE AS I GO ACROSS A METAL PLATE IN THE ROAD. *TR
I PURCHASED MY 2010 PRIUS IN NOV 2009. AS ADMITTED BY TOYOTA THIS FEB 4, 2010, WHILE BRAKING, I HAVE MOMENTARILY LOST BRAKING AND THE PRIUS LURCHED FORWARD. *TR
BOUGHT A 2010 PRIUS IN OCTOBER 2009. IT CURRENTLY HAS 3500 MILES ON IT. AT LEAST THREE TIMES THE CAR FELT AS IF IT SLIPPED ON ICE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES (WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE PERFECT - NO ICE, SNOW OR RAIN). THEIR IS DIFFICULTY IN CLEARING FOG FROM THE WINDOWS AND ONE TIME I HAD TROUBLE SETTING THE CRUISE CONTROL. *TR
1. I BOUGHT MY 2010 PRIUS NEW FROM A TOYOTA DEALER IN EARLY DECEMBER OF 2009. 2. WHEN I AM APPLYING THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN, IF I HIT A POTHOLE, BUMP, OR SPEED BUMP THE BRAKES WILL STOP WORKING AND THE CAR WILL LURCH FORWARD. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS BRAKE FAILURE AT LEAST 20 TIMES, WITH VARYING SEVERITY. IT CAN HAPPEN ANY TIME I AM TRYING TO SLOW DOWN AND HIT A BUMP OR POTHOLE (E.G.. TRYING TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME IS STOPPING, OR BECAUSE I AM APPROACHING A STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT, OR BECAUSE I AM TURNING OR GOING INTO A CURVE). SO FAR, THIS BRAKE FAILURE HAS NOT CAUSED AN ACCIDENT BUT IT HAS CAUSED ME TO COME VERY CLOSE TO HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME ON ONE OCCASION. I HAVE COME TO NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY PRIUS BECAUSE I CANNOT TRUST THE BRAKES WHEN THERE ARE BUMPS OR POTHOLES IN THE ROAD. 3. I BROUGHT MY PRIUS TO THE SERVICE CENTER OF THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN ON 2/4/2010. THAT EVENING WHEN I SPOKE TO THE MECHANIC, HE TOLD ME THAT THE BRAKES ARE NORMAL AND THAT HE DID NOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX MY CAR AND THAT I COULD PICK MY CAR UP. I THEN SPOKE WITH THE MANAGER AND TOLD HIM THAT I DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL THEY FIXED THE BRAKING PROBLEM. MY CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP AND HAS NOT BEEN FIXED BECAUSE THEY ARE REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE BRAKES ARE NOT FUNCTIONING SAFELY. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID BRAKE PROBLEM: PURCHASED NEW IN OCTOBER, 2009, MY PRIUS HAS EXPERIENCED MOMENTARY BRAKE FAILURE WHILE STOPPING UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. SPECIFICALLY, WHEN I HIT A BUMP WHILE BRAKING SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES MOMENTARILY RELEASE AND THE CAR LAUNCHES FORWARD. THIS HAS HAPPENED 6 TO 10 TIMES SINCE I PURCHSED THE CAR. I ALERTED THE DEALER (BERNARDI TOYOTA IN FRAMINGAHM, MA) ABOUT 3 - 4 WEEKS AGO, AND THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. NO SOLUTION HAS BEEN OFFERED YET. *CN
1) WHILE DRIVING MY NEW 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS STRAIGHT AHEAD AT APPROXIMATELY 10-15 MPH ON A DRY, SUNNY DAY, I HIT THE BRAKES HARD TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT. THE CAR SKIDDED LOUDLY ENOUGH THAT SEVERAL BYSTANDERS LOOKED AT ME. THIS WAS CLEARLY A FAILURE OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. I RECENTLY BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO MY TOYOTA DEALER (TOYOTA SANTA CRUZ), WHICH INSPECTED THE BRAKES AND DECLARED THEM TO BE FINE. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT RECURRED, THOUGH I HAVE NOT HAD TO APPLY THE BRAKES IN SUCH A STRONG MANNER SINCE THAT ONE INCIDENT. 2) ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, WHILE DRIVING THE SAME PRIUS AT VERY SLOW SPEEDS (PERHAPS 5 MPH) SHORTLY AFTER STARTING THE CAR, MY WIFE GENTLY APPLIED THE BRAKES; THE VEHICLE JERKED ALMOST TO A STOP. IN OTHER WORDS, A GENTLE APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL LED TO A VERY RAPID, JERKY, STOP AS IF SHE HAD SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. *CN
HALFWAY DOWN A HILL IN THIS VERMONT VILLAGE IS A RIGHT TURN THAT GOES UPHILL. I HAVE DRIVEN THIS IS IN WINTER WEATHER IN MANY DIFFERENT VEHICLES FOR OVER 40 YEARS. ON THIS DAY THERE WAS SNOW ON THE ROAD SO I WAS DRIVING SLOWLY GOING DOWN THE HILL AND WAS GOING TO MAKE THE RIGHT HAND TURN BUT WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES THEY REACTED UNLIKE ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE DRIVEN IN THOSE CONDITIONS AND JUST SEEMED TO CAUSE ME TO SLIDE INSTEAD OF SLOWING DOWN. AT THAT POINT I DECIDED NOT TO TURN AND CONTINUED CAREFULLY DOWN THE HILL. FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME OR I FELT I MIGHT HAVE SLID INTO THEM. LATER THAT WEEK I CALLED AND TALKED TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE MANAGER WHERE I HAD BOUGHT THE CAR. HE SAID HE WASN'T AWARE OF ANY PROBLEM WITH BRAKES, THAT HE HAD A PRIUS, ALTHOUGH AN OLDER MODEL, AND HADN'T HAD ANY PROBLEM. HE HAD HEARD FROM ONE OTHER PERSON WITH A BRAKING COMPLAINT ON THE 2010 MODEL. I ASKED HIM TO INFORM ME IF HE FOUND OUT ANYTHING BUT I NEVER HEARD FROM HIM. THE CONDITION WAS SERIOUS ENOUGH FROM MY POINT OF VIEW THAT SINCE I HAVE A SECOND CAR I HAVE NOT USED THE PRIUS IN INCLEMENT WEATHER. I WOULD CONSIDER THIS, IN LIGHT OF RECENT DISCLOSURES, TO BE A VERY SERIOUS AND UNSAFE CONDITION TO PUT ME, ME FAMILY AND OTHERS ON THE HIGHWAY AT RISK AND WOULD HOPE THAT A RECALL AND RESOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE QUICK AND FORTHCOMING. *CN
I HAVE A NEW 2010 PRIUS II WITH ONLY 2500K MILES ON IT. NOW THREE TIMES FOR ME AND ONCE FOR MY HUSBAND WE'VE HAD PROBLEMS GETTING THE CAR TO STOP/SLOW DOWN WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE ON WET RAILROAD TRACKS AND PRIOR TO APPROACHING A PATCH OF ICE IN THE ROAD. YOU PRESS THE BRAKE EXPECTING IT TO SLOW DOWN. INSTEAD A HELPLESSNESS TAKES OVER AS YOU FEEL AS THOUGH THE CAR HAS SUDDENLY GONE INTO AUTO PILOT AND YOU GO SAILING ON AS THOUGH THE BRAKES NEVER ENGAGED AND YOU INSTEAD HIT THE ACCELERATOR. THANK GOD I'M A CAUTIOUS DRIVER AND HAVE NEVER IN 44 YEARS HAD AN ACCIDENT OF ANY KIND BUT, EVEN MY DEFENSIVE DRIVING SKILLS WOULD BE USELESS IF THE CAR DOES NOT DO WHAT I'M TELLING IT TO! I USE THIS CAR DAILY TO TRANSPORT MYSELF AND TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND NOW I'M SCARED TO DEATH TO DRIVE IT. I WAS GLAD MY HUSBAND HAD IT HAPPEN TOO. I HAD NOT TOLD HIM WHEN IT DID IT TO ME AND THE LOOK ON HIS FACE AS HE TURNED TO ME GOING OVER WET RAILROAD TRACKS AND SAID "DID YOU FEEL THAT?" I FELT VALIDATED KNOWING THAT IT WASN'T JUST ME. TODAY WHILE WITH MY MOM AND THE KIDS I SLOWED DOWN TO NAVIGATE OVER AN UNAVOIDABLE PATCH OF ICE IN AN INTERSECTION. THANK GOODNESS NO ONE WAS IN FRONT AND THE ONCOMING CAR ATTEMPTING TO TURN LEFT DIDN'T GO BECAUSE I APPLIED THE BRAKE AND WE JUST SAILED ON THROUGH, BARELY MAKING THE TURN THAT I NEEDED TO MAKE JUST BEYOND THE INTERSECTION. MY POOR MOTHER SAID, "DID YOU MEAN TO DO THAT?" HAD ANY CAR OR PERSON BEEN IN THE WAY I HAVE NO DOUBT I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. THIS IS MY FIRST NEW CAR IN YEARS AND NOW I'M PETRIFIED I'M GOING TO CRASH IT AND HURT MY FAMILY AND OTHERS. THIS HAS TO BE INVESTIGATED ASAP. PLEASE HELP! *TR
TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 BRAKES WHILE ON REVERSE GEAR SUDDENLY BECOMES TOO SENSITIVE AND BRINGS THE VEHICLE TO COMPLETE HALT EVEN ON THE SLIGHTEST APPLICATION OF BRAKE AND WHEN RELEASED THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES VERY FAST AND THERE BY NEEDING TO HIT BRAKES AGAIN WHICH JOLTS THE CAR BACK TO HALT. THOUGH IT HAPPENS ONLY ON REVERSE IT MAKES THE CAR HIGHLY UNPREDICTABLE WHILE BACKING UP. TOYOTA DEALERS SEEM TO IGNORE THIS COMPLAINT WHEN TAKEN FOR SERVICING AND HENCE REPORTING ON THIS PORTAL. *JB
MY 2010 PRIUS WON'T STOP ON ROUGH OR ICED UP ROADS. *TR
MY 2010 PRIUS BRAKES SKIP WHEN GOING OVER LARGE BUMPS OR HOLES MAKING THE CAR SURGE FORWARD RATHER THAN SLOW. I NOTICE IT AT A HIGHER RATHER THAN LOWER SPEEDS. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME UNTIL I HEARD OTHERS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. IT WAS A DAILY PROBLEM AS I GO TO WORK THE SAME DAY AND IT HAPPENED IN THE SAME SPOT SO THE APPROX. INCIDENT DATE BELOW IS SORTA INVALID. IN ADDITION, I DON'T KNOW I CHECKED THE CORRECT "BRAKE" SECTION, I JUST KNOW IT'S THE BRAKES. *TR
2010 PRIUS WITH ABS PROBLEM. ON UNEVEN SURFACES (I.E. POTHOLES) OR ICY ROADS I HAVE NOT HAD 3 EVENTS WHERE THE BRAKES WERE NOT EFFECTIVE. ONE SITUATION WAS SO BAD AND ALMOST CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT UNDER SNOW/ICY CONDITIONS THAT I BROUGHT THE CAR TO TOYOTA IMMEDIATELY. I HAVE A SERVICE RECORD OF THAT IN MID DECEMBER 2009. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT KEPT MY VEHICLE FOR A COUPLE DAYS AND DID ICY ROAD TESTING BUT NEVER FULLY RECREATED THE SITUATION. I HAVE DOCUMENTATION FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ON THIS DESPITE THEIR NOT ACKNOWLEDGING A PROBLEM. I HAVE A LOT OF RECOLLECTION OF THE DETAILS LEADING UP TO THE 3 SCENARIOS THAT HAVE OCCURRED NOW AND CAN LIKELY GIVE GOOD INSIGHT. BTW, FROM THE STORIES I READ TODAY IN THE PRESS I THINK TOYOTA (AND THE STORIES) HAVE THE PROBLEM MOSTLY DESCRIBED. I STILL HAVE OTHER CONCERNS BASED ON MY EXPERIENCES FROM THE 3 EVENTS. *TR

I HAVE NOTICED A BRAKING PROBLEM WITH MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. I WAS SLOWING DOWN BECAUSE OF A COW IN THE ROAD AND AS I WAS SLOWING I HIT A SMALL BUMP AND SUDDENLY MY BRAKES COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING FOR ABOUT A SECOND AND IT ALMOST FELT LIKE THE CAR WAS ACCELERATING. I BOUGHT MY 2010 PRIUS IN JULY 2009. SINCE THEN THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL INCIDENTS IN WHICH MY CAR SEEMED TO SURGE FORWARD WHILE I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BRAKING AND HIT A BUMP, RAILROAD TRACKS OR POTHOLE. INITIALLY, I CONVINCED MYSELF I MUST HAVE BEEN LETTING UP ON THE BRAKE WHEN I HIT THE BUMP BUT WHEN THIS SAME THING HAPPENED 3 DAYS AGO ON SLIPPERY, ICY ROADS, I KNEW FOR 100% CERTAIN I HAD NOT LET UP ON THE BRAKE. MY CAR SURGED AS I WAS SLOWLY PULLING UP TO A STOP SIGN AND GENTLY BRAKING. I CAME VERY CLOSE TO HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, HAD TO PUSH DOWN ON THE BRAKES VERY HARD, WHICH ACTIVATED THE ABS. THE ABS HAD NOT BEEN ACTIVATED IN ANY OF THE PREVIOUS INCIDENTS BECAUSE I HAD NOT NEEDED TO PUSH HARD ON THE BRAKES AS I WAS IN NO DANGER OF HITTING ANYTHING. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING TOYOTAS SINCE 1992 AND AM STUNNED THAT THIS PROBLEM IS HAPPENING WITH NO FIX IN SIGHT. IT FEELS ALMOST LIKE THE VEHICLE IS SLIDING OR SPEEDING UP FOR JUST A SECOND BEFORE RESUMING A DESCENT IN SPEED. ALTHOUGH, TOYOTA CORRECTED THE BRAKE ISSUE, THE CONSUMER HAS COSTS AND OUTSTANDING PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE DONE IN FIRST INCIDENT, INCLUDING PROBLEMS WITH THE WHEEL BEARING. THE CONSUMER IS REQUESTING TOYOTA REIMBURSE HIM FOR MONIES PAID TO FIX THE VEHICLE AND ALSO TO FIX THE WHEEL BEARING THAT WAS NOT IDENTIFIED AND NOT REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN. THERE WAS SNOW ON THE ROADS AND AS HE WAS MAKING THE TURN, TRAVELING ABOUT 9 OR 10 MPH, HE STARTED SLIDING TOWARD THE CURB ON THE OTHER SIDE. HE TRIED TO BRAKE, BUT HE CONTINUED TO SLIDE. AN INSTANT BEFORE HE HIT THE CURB, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATED, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. HE SLID INTO THE CURB WITH THE WHEEL TURNED, BROKE THE WHEEL RIM AND FLATTENED THE TIRE. THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED WHEN HE WAS COMING OUT OF A MALL PARKING LOT HEADING TOWARD A MAIN STREET. THE CONSUMER STATED HE WAS COASTING TO THE STOP SIGN AND APPLIED THE BRAKES, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. HE PUSHED THEM AS HARD AS HE COULD AND AGAIN AT THE LAST SECOND THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATED. *JB

THE THREE INCIDENTS I HAVE MENTIONED WERE DURING WINTER AND DURING POSSIBLY ICY CONDITIONS. HOWEVER, I KNOW HOW TO OPERATE A VEHICLE ON ICE, AND I AM AWARE OF HOW ABS BRAKING FEELS. DURING EACH INCIDENT, I WOULD BE BRAKING SLOWLY, WITH PLENTY OF TIME, THEN HIT A BUMP, AND EXPERIENCE A FEELING OF SKIDDING WHILE THE BRAKES DISENGAGED FOR A FEW SECONDS. I ALMOST HIT A PEDESTRIAN AT A TOLL BOOTH, A CONCRETE DIVIDER DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING, AND ANOTHER MOTORIST AT A SUDDEN STOP CONDITION ALONG ANOTHER HIGHWAY. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THESE CARS. I CAN COMPENSATE MY DRIVING SKILLS TO ADJUST FOR ROAD CONDITIONS THAT I AM AWARE OF. IF ANY SUDDEN BRAKING IS REQUIRED, AND I HIT A POTHOLE AT THE RIGHT TIME, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP. *TR

THIS 2010 PRIUS HAS MORE SQUEAKS, RATTLES AND STRESS NOISES THAN ALL OF MY OTHER TOYOTA PRODUCTS COMBINED. WE PURCHASED A 2010 PRIUS IN AUGUST OF 2009 AND HAVE HAD THE FOLLOWING RECURRING ISSUES: 1. LOSS OF BRAKING WHEN SLOWING DOWN OVER ROUGH OR UNEVEN PAVEMENT, GRAVEL, WET LEAVES, SNOW, ICE, CRACKED PAVEMENT, POT HOLES... THE BRAKES ENGAGE FOR A SECOND, AND THEN WE EXPERIENCE NO BRAKING AT ALL FOR NUMBER OF SECONDS. WE TOOK OUR PRIUS INTO JON LANCASTER TOYOTA IN MADISON, WI WHERE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND TOLD THE MECHANIC OF THE BRAKING ISSUES WE WERE EXPERIENCING . HE CHECKED OUT THE VEHICLE AND SAID HE COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUES WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM AND SAID THAT HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM AND NEITHER HAD TOYOTA. THIS LACK OF BRAKING RESULTED IN A REAR END COLLISION IN DECEMBER 2009. MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING AT VERY LOW SPEED IN TOWN ONE EVENING AND THIS LACK OF BRAKING ISSUE OCCURRED AND HE SLID INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. MY HUSBAND PUMPED THE BRAKES FOUR TIMES AND EACH TIME THIS DELAY IN BRAKING OCCURRED. THERE WAS NO BRAKING HAPPENING AT ALL. THE CAR WAS SLOWING DOWN FASTER WHEN THE BRAKES WERE NOT APPLIED, THAN WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THERE WAS FRESH SNOW ON THE ROAD. THERE WAS A DANE COUNTY SHERIFF AT THE INTERSECTION AND MY HUSBAND AND THE PERSON HE HIT RAN THE INCIDENT BY THE STATE PATROL WHO AGREED THAT IT WAS APPROPRIATE FOR THE TWO PARTIES INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT TO EXCHANGE INSURANCE AND CONTACT INFORMATION AND LEAVE THE SCENE WITHOUT CALLING THE LOCAL POLICE. THERE WAS DAMAGE TO OUR PRIUS FRONT BUMPER, AND TO THE BACK BUMPER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE. 2. OCCASIONALLY WHEN STARTING UP THE PRIUS, THE BRAKE FEELS HARD AND CAN'T BE DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY. I WOULD DESCRIBE THE FEELING AS "FLOATING" OR HITTING A PATCH OF EXTREMELY SLIPPERY ICE OR LIKE MY FOOT HAS SLIPPED OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL. I AM CONFIDENT THAT THIS EVENT INCREASES STOPPING DISTANCE BUT I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH AND IT MAY ONLY BE INCHES. I KNOW FROM READING, THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED YEARS AGO WITH THE PREVIOUS GENERATION PRIUS. OVERALL, I AM EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH THE CAR BUT THIS IS SOMETHING I BELIEVE SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. OH YES, IT IS FAIRLY EASY TO REPRODUCE AND HAS HAPPENED TO ME 3-5 TIMES IN THE 6000 MILES I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR. IT IS NOT NEARLY AS TERRIFYING NOW AS IT WAS THE FIRST TIME BUT WHEN IT HAPPENS IT DEFINITELY GRABS YOUR ATTENTION! IT HAS NOT CAUSED ME TO GET IN AN ACCIDENT BUT I BELIEVE THE POTENTIAL IS THERE FOR AN ACCIDENT TO OCCUR. *TR

I HAVE A 2010 PRIUS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN I GO OVER UNEVEN GROUND (LIKE POTHOLES OR BUMPS) OR SLICK SURFACES (ESPECIALLY TRAIN TRACKS AND SEWER COVERS) MY BRAKES DON'T SEEM TO WORK. IT FEELS LIKE I AM NOT IN CONTROL OF MY CAR, AND FOR 2-3 SECONDS THE CAR IS NOT BRAKING EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT IS PRESSING ON THE BRAKE. *TR
