OCCASIONALLY WHEN BRAKING AT A RELATIVELY SLOW SPEED ON A BUMPY OR SLIPPERY SURFACE THE BRAKES FEEL LIKE THEY STOP WORKING. MY IMMEDIATE RESPONSE IS TO PRESS THE BRAKES HARDER AND THAT SEEMS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. I DON'T REMEMBER ANY SENSE THAT THE ABS SYSTEM KICKED IN DURING THESE SITUATIONS. I HAVE NEVER NOT PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKE PEDAL SO DON'T KNOW WHETHER THE LOSS OF BRAKING SENSATION WOULD CONTINUE IF NO MORE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKES. I HAVE ALSO FELT THIS SENSATION WHEN BRAKING WHILE CORNERING AT SLOWER SPEEDS. I DON'T KNOW IF A SLIPPERY OR BUMPY SURFACE IS ALWAYS INVOLVED WHEN I EXPERIENCE THE LOSS OF BRAKING WHILE TURNING, BUT AT LEAST ON ONE OCCASION DURING CORNERING THERE HAS BEEN A BUMP GOING FROM A SLIGHTLY RAISED ASPHALT SURFACE TO LOWER CONCRETE SURFACE ATTACHED TO THE CURB FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL ONLY. *TR
I HAVE HAD MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IV SINCE AUGUST 2009. OVER THE PAST TWO TO THREE MONTHS, I NOTICE THAT SOMETIMES WHEN I BRAKE, MY CAR JUMPS FORWARD A LITTLE BIT BEFORE BRAKING. IT FEELS LIKE SKIDDING ON ICE BUT THERE IS NO ICE AROUND. IT HAPPENS AT LEAST A FEW TIMES EVERY WEEK. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY SO FAR THAT THIS ISSUE HASN'T CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I NOW MAKE SURE I HAVE EXTRA SPACE WHEN BRAKING BECAUSE I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND A REASON FOR THIS HAPPENING. THERE IS NO WAY TO PREDICT WHEN THE BRAKES WILL REACT THAT WAY. I AM PLANNING ON CONTACTING MY DEALERSHIP TODAY. *TR
MY WIFE AND I PURCHASED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS (NEW) IN JULY, 2009. WE HAVE DRIVEN IT SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 8,000 MILES. I HAVE TWO SAFETY RELATED COMPLAINTS TO REPORT WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM: COMPLAINT #1 - SEVERAL TIMES (PERHAPS 10-15) WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES AFTER COASTING A SHORT DISTANCE AS I PREPARE TO STOP, I HAVE MOMENTARILY LOST ALL BRAKING. IT FEELS AS IF I HAVE HIT A PATCH OF GLARE ICE WITH ALL FOUR WHEELS. IT ALWAYS HAPPENS THE MOMENT I FIRST APPLY THE BRAKES, AND THEN AFTER A MOMENT (PERHAPS A SECOND OR LESS) THE BRAKING SYSTEM RETURNS TO NORMAL OPERATION. FOR THAT BRIEF TIME THERE IS NO BRAKING ACTION AT ALL. COMPLAINT #2 - SEVERAL TIMES (PERHAPS 8-10) WHEN TAKING THE CAR FROM "PARK" TO "REVERSE" TO BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, THE BRAKING SYSTEM IS SO SENSITIVE THAT IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE CAR'S SPEED. THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS NEARLY NO "PLAY" OR "FEEL" TO IT, CAUSING THE CAR TO JERK TO A STOP WHEN THE SLIGHTEST PRESSURE IS APPLIED. THIS RESULTS IN A PATTERN OF "COAST A FEW FEET AND JERK TO A STOP, COAST A FEW FEET AND JERK TO A STOP", REPEATED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE BACKING UP THE NECESSARY 30 +/- FEET. I DON'T RECALL EVER EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM WHILE MOVING FORWARD. SINCE I HAVE EXPERIENCED EACH OF THESE MALFUNCTIONS MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THESE PAST SEVEN MONTHS, THE "APPROXIMATE INCIDENT DATE" BELOW IS ARBITRARY. *TR
I HAVE NOT YET HAD THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED, BUT WHEN I DECELERATE IN MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS AND I HAPPEN TO GO OVER A BUMP (CAN BE A POTHOLE, OR ICE, ETC.), IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE BRAKE SOMETIMES DISENGAGES BRIEFLY AND I HAVE TO RE-ENGAGE TO RE-ESTABLISH BRAKING. THE LOSS OF BRAKING IS UNRELATED TO THE POSITION OF MY FOOT, IT'S AS IF THE BRAKE SUDDENLY IS NOT PRESENT (NOT A DECREASE IN BRAKE PRESSURE). I'VE CAUGHT IT QUICKLY EACH TIME, SO NEVER THOUGHT TO COMPLAIN UNTIL THE RECENT RECALLS. *TR
WHILE BRAKING MY 2010 PRIUS THERE ARE TIMES WHERE THE CAR APPEARS TO SURGE FORWARD. THE INITIAL BRAKING OCCURS FINE BUT NEAR THE POINT OF COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP (IE LESS THAN 10MPH) IS WHEN THE SURGE OCCURS. INITIALLY I ATTRIBUTED THIS TO ICY ROAD CONDITIONS BUT THIS HAS NOW OCCURRED ON DRY PAVEMENT. THE DASH LIGHT INDICATING SLIPPAGE OF THE CAR DOES NOT APPEAR WHEN THIS OCCURS. THE PROBLEMS SEEMS TO OCCUR MORE OFTEN WITHIN THE FIRST 5 MILES OF STARTING THE CAR. THIS SURGE DOES NOT OCCUR EVERYDAY NOR EVERY TIME THE CAR IS STARTED. IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE STRICTLY TEMPERATURE RELATED ALTHOUGH IT HAS STARTED OCCURRING ONLY IN THE WINTER (CAR PURCHASED IN JULY). *TR
I OWN A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS AND HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL TIMES THE BRAKING FAILURE PROBLEMS RECENTLY DISCUSSED IN THE NATIONAL MEDIA ON SNOW AND ICE AND ON ROUGH ROAD SURFACES. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH ON AN UNEVEN ROAD SURFACE APPROACHING A TRAFFIC SIGNAL WHEN THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED. THE DRIVER HAD TO APPLY EXCESSIVE FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER ENCOUNTERING AN UNEVEN ROAD SURFACE AND POTHOLES. THE FAILURES OCCURRED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WILL BE TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,800.

I HAVE A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, BOUGHT IN NOVEMBER 2009. I HAVE NOTICED THAT IF I AM DRIVING OVER A SPEED BUMP, POTHOLE OR EVEN AN UNEVEN ROAD SURFACE AND I BRAKE, THE CAR EITHER ACCELERATES OR SLIPS FORWARD. THE BRAKES DON'T WORK. I EXPERIENCED THIS SOON AFTER I GOT THE NEW CAR. YESTERDAY, I SLOWED DOWN TO ENTER A GAS STATION, BUT THE ROAD SURFACE WAS DRIVEN WITH HOLES AND THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN EVEN THOUGHT I BRAKED AND IT OVERSHOT THE ENTRANCE. I'M NERVOUS THAT I MAY HIT SOMEONE IN FRONT OF ME AND EVEN WORSE, IF I AM SLOWING DOWN FOR A PEDESTRIAN, I MAY HIT A PERSON. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IN NOVEMBER 2009. ABOUT 10 TIMES SINCE THEN, I'VE FELT THE SENSATION OF 'GOING AIRBORNE' WHEN BRAKING ON A SPEED BUMP OR UNEVEN PAVEMENT. THE SENSATION IS MOMENTARY, AND THE BRAKES HAVE ALWAYS 'RECOVERED'. THERE WAS ONLY ONE TIME WHEN I THOUGHT THAT AN ACCIDENT MIGHT HAPPEN, WHEN I NEEDED TO BRAKE SUDDENLY BEHIND ANOTHER CAR. *TR
WHEN I BRAKE WHILE GOING OVER A SPEED BUMP, THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD. PLEASE NOTE: I REALLY AM NOT SURE OF THE DATE. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN JULY OF 2009. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME A FEW TIMES AND IT WAS SUCH A BIZARRE COMBINATION (ACCELERATING WHILE BRAKING) THAT I REALLY DIDN'T CLUE IN TO IT AS A CAR ISSUE RIGHT AWAY. WHEN I SAW PRESS ON IT AND DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS AN ACTUAL ISSUE AND NOT A "FLUKE" I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE DEALER WHERE I GOT THE CAR (NORTH HOLLYWOOD TOYOTA). THEY BASICALLY REFUSED TO EVEN DISCUSS IT, SAYING THEY'D ONLY FOLLOW THE ORDERS OF TOYOTA CORPORATE. THEY GAVE ME A NUMBER TO CALL, AND OF COURSE, IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT ISSUES, THEY ARE SWAMPED. THE RECORDING INDICATED THEY WERE NOT ACCEPTING CALLS. SO NOW I HAVE A CAR THAT ACTUALLY HAS AN ISSUE AND CANNOT GET IT FIXED. *CN
I OWN A 2010 PRIUS. I NOTICE THAT ON MANY OCCASIONS, THE WARNING LAMP ON THE DASHBOARD FOR THE ANTI-SKID SYSTEM COMES ON VERY EASILY, WHEN THE CAR IS NOT IN ANY DANGER WHATSOEVER OF SKIDDING, AND THAT IT SOMETIMES COMES ON WHEN THE CAR IS ACTUALLY AT A STOP. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN DRIVING ON UNEVEN PAVEMENT, AT MODERATE SPEEDS OF ABOUT 30 MPH, THE BRAKES DO NOT FEEL RELIABLE, AND THAT SOMETIMES THEY FEEL VERY SLOPPY: SLOW TO REACT AND VERY SOFT IN THEIR IMPACT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING EARLIER MODEL PRIUS CARS FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND DID NOT NOTICE THIS SAME PROBLEM BEFORE I STARTED DRIVING MY 2010 PRIUS. I AM NOT CONFIDENT ABOUT THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND FEEL RELUCTANT TO DRIVE THE CAR, EXCEPT AT VERY LOW SPEEDS.

WITHIN A SECOND OF HITTING THE POT-HOLE I FELT AS IF THE CAR SLID FORWARD WITHOUT RESISTANCE RATHER THAN FEELING IT BEING SLOWED BY THE BRAKES. A FEW SECONDS LATER THE CAR SEEMED TO RECOVER AND FEEL NORMAL. I EXPERIENCED THIS TWO MORE TIMES AT THE SAME INTERSECTION WHEN HITTING THE SAME POT-HOLE. I ALSO EXPERIENCED SOMETHING SIMILAR WEEKS LATER ON A DIFFERENT ROAD. MY WIFE REPORTED SIMILAR EXPERIENCES 3-4 TIMES. WE FELT THIS WAS CAUSED BY UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE CARS TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM. 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, PURCHASED NOV. 2009. USING CRUISE CONTROL, THE CAR ACCELERATED QUICKLY ON IT'S OWN WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO CHANGE SPEED BY USING THE CRUISE CONTROL LEVER ON THE STEERING WHEEL. HAPPENED TWICE, THEN I STOPPED EXPERIMENTING FOR REASONS OF SAFETY. THE PROBLEM IS IDENTICAL TO THE ONE DESCRIBED BY STEVE WOSNIAK IN PUBLIC TWO WEEKS AGO--ONE THAT GOT A LOT OF PRESS. WHILE DRIVING MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, I NOTICE THAT AT TIMES THE CAR FAILS TO BRAKE ADEQUATELY. THIS HAPPENS WHEN BRAKING OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT. THE FEELING IS AS IF THE CAR SPEEDS UP A LITTLE. IT'S DISCONCERTING. *TR

WHILE BRAKING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND DRIVING OVER A POTHOLE, A BUMP OR ANY CHANGE IN THE ROAD SURFACE, THE VEHICLE WOULD MOMENTARILY ACCELERATE BEFORE THE BRAKES WOULD ENGAGE. THE DEALER STATED THAT WAS NORMAL FOR THE BRAKING SYSTEM FOR HIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 19,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT 15 MPH THERE WAS A REDUCTION OF THE SPEED RATE. THE DRIVER ENCOUNTERED A SPEED BUMP WITH PRESSURE OF THE FOOT APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SURGE FORWARD. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO THE DESTINATION AND PARKED THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED TWO DIFFERENT TIMES. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 5000.

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE AT A STOP SIGN AS I WAS MOVING SLOWLY UP AN INCLINE IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD, MY 2010 PRIUS HYBRID SEEMED TO LURCH FORWARD. THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED ONCE IN THE THREE MONTHS SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, BUT IT STARTLED ME. THANK GOODNESS THERE WAS EXTRA DISTANCE BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME, OR THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A FENDER BENDER. *TR
UNEXPECTED TOTAL LOSS OF PROPULSION AFTER DRIVING ON WET ROAD CONDITIONS AT APPROX 35 MPH. . 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WITH ENHANCED STABILITY CONTROL. NO RESPONSE FROM GAS PEDAL. NEEDED TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND RESTART VEHICLE TO OBTAIN POWER. LIGHTS AND DASH DISPLAY REMAINED ON BUT VEHICLE HAD NO POWER TO MOVE. HAD TO COAST SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET AVOIDING TRAFFIC TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND "RESTARTING" VEHICLE. ESC/TRAC SQUIGGLY SYMBOL APPEARED ON DASH MOMENTARILY. ON OTHER OCCASIONS I HAVE NOTICED WHEN STOPPING ON LOOSE SURFACE MATERIALS OR STOPPING WHEN DRIVING OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT THAT THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY LURCHES FORWARD IN A MOST UNPREDICTABLE AND UNNATURAL WAY ALMOST AS IF THERE WERE NO BRAKES AND THE VEHICLE MOMENTARILY ATTEMPTS TO ACCELERATE. THE FIRST CONDITION COULD EASILY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC OR ON A BUSY FREEWAY SINCE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RETURNED TO THE OPERATOR UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALLY STOPPED AND THEN SHUT DOWN AND RESTARTED. MY SENSE IS THAT THE ENHANCED STABILITY CONTROL AND TRAC SYSTEM IS OVERLY RESPONSIVE TO ROAD CONDITIONS AND IS SLOW OR INHIBITS THE RETURN OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE TO THE OPERATOR. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER. THEY REPORT NO ERROR CODES OR TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON THE ISSUE. NO CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKEN. MY CONFIDENCE IN THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN SEVERELY DAMAGED. I CAN'T IMAGINE THE DANGER OF LOSS OF PROPULSION WHEN DRIVING AT A HIGH SPEED ON A HIGH TRAFFIC/SPEED HIGHWAY. *TR
OUR 2010 PRIUS BOUGHT IN OCTOBER 2009 FAILED TO STOP IN TIME AND GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT IN NOVEMBER 2009. WE HAD SUSPECTED A BRAKE ISSUE SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR BUT WERE NOT CONCERNED UNTIL NOW THAT TOYOTA HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THIS ISSUE WITH BRAKES, WE WANT TOYOTA TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND ISSUE A RECALL. *TR
I HAVE BEEN HAVING BRAKING FAILURE SINCE THE FIRST WEEK I BROUGHT THE CAR HOME. I COMPLAINED ABOUT IT TO TOYOTA ARDMORE, WHERE I HAD BOUGHT THE CAR, AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK IT OUT. SPECIFICALLY, I FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO BRAKE ON WET SURFACES AFTER RAIN. BECAUSE I WAS BRINGING THE CAR IN THE FIRST WEEK I TOOK POSSESSION FOR ANOTHER ISSUE, I WAS TOLD THIS WOULD BE LOOKED INTO. AFTERWARD, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. BUT THE ISSUE OF FAULTY BRAKING CONTINUED. MY SON WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND HIT A POTHOLE AND FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR. THIS PAST WEEK WITH MAJOR SNOWFALL IN THE PHILADELPHIA REGION, THE CAR HAS BECOME VIRTUALLY UNDRIVABLE. IT HITS ICY PATCHES AND SKIDS FORWARD WHEN WE TRY TO BRAKE. I HAVE TWO ADDITIONAL MESSAGES WITH TOYOTA ARDMORE ASKING THEM TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE NOT YET HEARD BACK FROM THE, *CN
I HAVE A 2010 PRIUS BOUGHT IN SEPTEMBER. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SURGE WHILE BRAKING ABOUT 4 OR 5 TIMES IN 5,000 MILES OF DRIVING. I DIDN'T CONNECT IT WITH BRAKING AS IT WAS A SURGE. I THINK THAT THE ROADS WERE WET EACH TIME THIS HAPPENED. I STEPPED DOWN HARD EACH TIME AND THE SURGE DISAPPEARED AFTER ABOUT A SECOND OR SO. *TR
1. I WAS DRIVING ON A LOCAL ROAD AND WAS SWITCHING LANES. I PRESSED MY BRAKE PEDAL VERY SLIGHTLY AS I WAS CROSSING THE LANE DIVIDER AND AS I HIT ONE OF THE PLASTIC BUMPS, MY CAR ACCELERATED FORWARD. 2. THIS HAS RECURRED MANY TIMES AND THERE WERE NO VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME EVERYTIME IT HAPPENED SO I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A STOP. SEVERAL TIMES I WOULD EITHER CROSS THE PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY AT THE INTERSECTION WHEN THIS ACCELERATION OCCURS. 3. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND EVERYTIME THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NORMAL AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. THEY WERE LYING AND COMPLETELY CLUELESS!!!*JB
THIS PROBLEM HAS EXISTED SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. CRUISE CONTROL EITHER DOES NOT FUNCTION AT ALL OR FAILS TO FUNCTION CORRECTLY. SOMETIMES THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL NOT ENGAGE. SOMETIMES THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL ENGAGE PROPERLY, BUT AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKES (AND DISENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL) THE CRUISE CONTROL CANNOT BE REENGAGED. TWO OPERATIONS WILL CAUSE THE CRUISE CONTROL TO BEGIN FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AGAIN: 1) TURN THE VEHICLE OFF; 2) PUT THE SHIFT LEVER INTO THE NEUTRAL POSITION, THEN BACK INTO DRIVE. RETURNED VEHICLE TO DEALER THREE TIMES FOR REPAIR. THEY DID NOT FIX THE MALFUNCTION DURING ANY OF THE THREE REPAIR VISITS. THEIR FINAL RESPONSE WAS TO CLAIM THAT THE VEHICLE WAS "FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED". *TR
BRAKE PEDAL LOSES PRESSURE WHILE BRAKING OVER BUMPS IN ROAD. PRESSURE RETURNS AFTER BUMPS ARE PASSED. RECALL ISSUED AND SOFTWARE FIX PROVIDED BY DEALER IN MARCH 2010. SOFTWARE FIX DIDN'T HELP. I HAVE A TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 AND IT ACCELERATES WHILE BRAKING ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS ESPECIALLY WHILE APPLYING BRAKE DURING CRUISE CONTROL AND BREAKING ON GOING THROUGH UNEVEN SURFACE. STARTED UP MORNING AFTER RAINY DAY, DROVE DOWN HILL TO STOP SIGN. APPROACHING STOP SIGN I APPLIED BRAKES AND NOTICED BRAKES DIDN'T IMMEDIATELY SLOW ME DOWN. ONLY AFTER FLOORING THE PEDAL AND FEELING A METAL ON METAL TYPE REACTION DID I COME TO A STOP. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT REPEATED ITSELF. *TR

MY WIFE AND I HAVE BOTH EXPERIENCED RARE BUT SCARY BRAKING IN OUR NEW 2010 PRIUS. UNDER THE RIGHT CONDITIONS THERE IS A DEFINITE LAG (LESS THAT TWO SECONDS)BETWEEN APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND WHEN THE BRAKES ACTUALLY ENGAGE. I SUSPECT AN ELECTRONIC PROBLEM IS NOT TELLING THE ELECTRIC TRACTION MOTOR TO SHUT OFF FAST ENOUGH DURING THESE BRAKING EVENTS, SO THE CAR IS BRAKING AGAINST ITS TRACTION MOTOR WHICH IS STILL PUSHING THE CAR. WE'VE ATTEMPTED TO PINPOINT THE CONDITIONS WHEN THIS UNUSUAL BRAKING BEHAVIOR OCCURS AND HERE IS OUR BEST DESCRIPTION: 1. HAPPENS WHEN ONE FRONT WHEEL HITS A SLICK SPOT LIKE A WET MANHOLE COVER OR STORM GRATE DURING BRAKING AND THE ABS CUTS IN 2. IT HAPPENS DURING BRAKING ON VERY BUMPY ROADS ESPECIALLY IN TIGHT CORNERS WHERE TRACTION MAY BE LOST MOMENTARILY ON BRAKING CAUSING THE ABS SYSTEM TO CUT IN. 3. IT HAPPENS AT RELATIVELY LOW SPEEDS BELOW 25MPG AND WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IN NOT PRESSED AND USUALLY WHEN THE TRACTION MOTOR IS RUNNING. WE DRIVE TWO OTHER CARS (NON-HYBRID)OVER THE SAME ROADS IN SIMILAR CONDITIONS AND DON'T EXPERIENCE THESE BRAKING ANOMALIES. THE TOYOTA DEALER CAN'T IDENTIFY A PROBLEM. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE'S 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS FROM COLORADO SPRINGS TO ALAMOSA WE EXPERIENCED THE FOLLOWING ANOMALY. WE WERE ON THE FREEWAY (I-25) DRIVING SOUTH ON LEVEL TERRAIN WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET AT ~70MPH. I NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE ENGINE RPM AND COULD SEE THE ENGINE DISPLAY FOR THE ENGINE IN THE PWR MODE. I DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL AND WAITED A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND REENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL. A SHORT TIME LATER (~15 MINUTES) THE RPM INCREASE OCCURRED AGAIN AND I ONCE AGAIN DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL. I DID NOT USE THE CRUISE CONTROL AGAIN ON THE TRIP. OCCURRING SEVERAL TIMES SINCE PURCHASE IN OCTOBER 2009, I EXPERIENCED A SLIGHT BURST OF ACCELERATION WHEN HITTING A POTHOLE OR SIZEABLE BUMP IN THE ROAD. DURING AN EXIT ONTO A HIGHWAY ACCESS ROAD (20-30 MPH) AND A SLOWING FOR A 90 DEGREE TURN (10-20 MPH) THE CAR EITHER DISENGAGED THE BRAKES OR ACCELERATED CAUSING A VERY BRIEF AND UNEXPECTED LURCH FORWARD. AFTER PASSING THE ROAD IMPERFECTION NORMAL BREAKING RETURNS. 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, I PICK UP THE CAR AT THE DEALER ON 20 NOV 2009. WHEN EVER I SET THE CRUISE CONTROL IT WORKS FINE UNTIL I TAP THE BRAKE TO TURN IT OFF. THE CAR SPEEDS UP. I HAVE TO PRESS HARDER ON THE BROKE TO GET THE CRUISE CONTROL TO DISENGAGE AND SLOW DOWN. ITS AS IF THE CRUISE CONTROL IS NOT SENSING THAT THE BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED AND RELEASING. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER ON 12-20-2009 HAVING DRIVEN IT A MONTH AND HAVING A CHANCE TO GET A FEEL FOR THE CAR. THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG THAT ALL THE CARS DID THIS.
