TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS AND TRYING TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL, SHE NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES FAILED TO RESPOND. SHE WOULD APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THEY WOULD LOCK FOR A FEW SECONDS. SHE NOTICED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED 5 TO 6 TIMES. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE OR DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED TO HAVE THE BRAKING SYSTEM LOCK FOR 3 SECONDS WHEN THEY ARE ENGAGED FORCEFULLY; AFTERWARDS THE DRIVER HAD PRESS THE PEDAL AGAIN TO RELEASE THE LOCKED POSITION. SHE HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER TO-DATE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 4,600. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 1,500.
THE ROADS WERE COVERED WITH SNOW AND WERE QUITE SLIPPERY. I WAS COMING DOWN A HILL TO A STOP SIGN AT ABOUT 10 MPH. I HIT THE BRAKES LIGHTLY, THE ABS ENGAGED (I COULD HEAR/FEEL THE BRAKES PULSE), BUT THE CAR DIDN'T SLOW DOWN MUCH. I JAMMED ON THE BRAKES, THE ABS WAS STILL ENGAGED AND THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION, AGAIN SLOWING DOWN VERY SLOWLY. IF IT HAD NOT BEEN A FOUR-WAY STOP, SOMEBODY WOULD HAVE HIT ME! I KEPT DRIVING AND THE SAME THING KEPT HAPPENING TO ME: I HIT THE BRAKES, THE ABS ENGAGED AND THE CAR STOPPED VERY SLOWLY. IN SOME CASES, IT FELT LIKE THE CAR EVEN ACCELERATED A LITTLE BIT BEFORE FINALLY (AND SLOWLY) COMING TO A STOP. I AM A MECHANICAL ENGINEER AND USED TO WORK FOR GENERAL MOTORS - I HAVE DRIVEN LOTS OF CARS - AND THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE HOME AND DROVE MY 2002 HONDA CIVIC (WHICH DOES NOT HAVE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES) DOWN THE SAME ROAD. WHILE THE CAR DID SLIDE IN THE SNOW, IT STOPPED IN ABOUT ONE-THIRD THE DISTANCE OF MY PRIUS. THERE IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING THE MATTER WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM AND/OR THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WHEN THE ABS ENGAGES. *TR
BRAKE FAILURE WHILE GOING OVER SPEED BUMPS. SOMETIMES ON FLAT SURFACES. *TR

WE PURCHASED OUR 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IN JUNE OF 2009. I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN I ACCIDENTALY HIT POTHOLES AND TRY TO APPLY THE BRAKES AT THE SAME TIME IT FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES DO NOT HOLD. I DO NOT HAVE A SET DATE WHEN I FIRST NOTICED THIS, SOME TIME IN LATE FALL ON A RAINY NIGHT. I THOUGHT I WAS JUST IMAGINING THIS UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN I HEARD OTHERS WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING.I LOVE THIS LITTLE CAR, BUT NOW I AM AFRAID TO TAKE IT ANYWHERE.HOW DO I FIND OUT THE RESULTS OF YOUR INVESTIGATION? *CN
I EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF BRAKES AT LEAST TWO OR THREE TIMES A DAY WITH MY 2010 PRIUS. THIS HAPPENS EVERYTIME I PRESS ON THE BRAKE AND HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD. I LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS AND OUR ROADS ARE NOTORIOUSLY BUMPY SO I LOOSE MY BRAKES OFTEN. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BACK IN NOVEMBER. THE DEALER REFUSED TO DO ANTHING ABOUT IT, SAYING THAT IT WAS ACTING HOW IT WAS DESIGNED. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE THAT LOOSES IT BRAKES WHEN THE CAR HITS A BUMP. *CN
NOT JUST THE BRAKES, IT'S ALSO THE PARK BUTTON ON THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. BESIDES THE CARS BRAKES NOT WORKING AND BEING THE CAUSE OF A RECENT COLLISION, THERE IS ANOTHER SAFETY ISSUE. THE CAR HAS A PARK BUTTON AND THAT I ACCIDENTALLY PUSHED WHEN I WAS DRIVING, THINKING I WAS REACHING FOR THE HEATER BUTTON. THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. I WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND THE CAR ENGINE WAS CUT OFF. WHEN I STEPPED ON THE GAS, THE CAR WOULD NOT GO. I WAS ALMOST HIT IN THE REAR END BY A SEMI TRUCK UNTIL I COULD GET THE CAR PULLED OVER AND STOPPED. TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE A SAFETY FEATURE ON THIS CAR SO THAT THE PARKING BUTTON WILL NOT OPERATE WHILE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN. *TR
WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL INSTANCES OF BRAKE MALFUNCTION IN OUR 2010 PRIUS. WHEN BACKING OUT OF OUR GARAGE, ON 3 OCCASIONS, WHEN MY FOOT WAS JUST RESTING GENTLY OVER THE BRAKE, IT FELT AS THOUGH I WAS STOMPING ON THE BRAKE. IT DID THIS 4-5 TIMES WHERE IT LURCHED TO A STOP WHEN I WASN'T APPLYING IT BUT JUST RESTING MY FOOT ON IT AS I BACKED UP. I HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE I WAS ENTERING A CAR WASH AND WHEN I WENT OVER A BUMP INTO THE CAR WASH STALL, THE CAR LURCHED UNCONTROLLABLY FORWARD. I TRIED TO PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND IT WOULDN'T STAY IN NEUTRAL BUT KEPT POPPING BACK INTO DRIVE AN LURCHING FORWARD.. ALSO, WE HAVE 3 INCIDENTS IN INCLEMENT WEATHER WHERE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES DID NOT WORK AT ALL OR DID NOT WORK CORRECTLY. ON A SNOWY DAY, I SLID RIGHT THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AND THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES DID NOT KICK IN NOR DID THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHT COME ON. MY HUSBAND HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE IF FELT AS THOUGH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES FUNCTIONED ONLY ON ONE SIDE OF THE CAR, PROPELLING HIM STRAIGHT SIDEWAYS UPON BRAKING. WE FEEL VERY STRONGLY THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL OF PRIUS THAT POSES A SIGNIFICANT RISK TO OUR SAFETY. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2010 PRIUS IN OCTOBER, 2009. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAVE BEEN BRAKING AND HIT A POTHOLE OR BUMP IN THE ROAD AND MY VEHICLE HAS ACCELERATED MOMENTARILY. THE FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES THIS HAPPENED, IT WAS RATHER CONCERNING AND DANGEROUS, AS I WAS CONCERNED I'D HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. SINCE THEN, I ATTEMPT TO NOT BRAKE DIRECTLY OVER A POTHOLE. *TR
WHEN I BRAKE ON BUMPY RAODS, THE CAR SOMETIMES LEARCHES AND THEN THE BRAKES ENGAGE, AND STOP THE CAR.
WE HAVE A 2010 PRIUS. MY WIFE HIT A POT HOLE WHEN SHE WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN. WHEN SHE STOMPED ON THE BRAKE THE CAR DIDN'T STOP AND IT DROVE INTO THE CURB SMASHING THE FRP GROUND EFFECTS MOLDING BELOW THE PASSENGER DOOR AND BEHIND THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE. I THOUGHT THIS WAS HER FAULT BUT I BELIEVE WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKING ON OUR CAR. CAN I RETURN THIS CAR?
PRIUS 2010 BRAKING ISSUE - PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED AT LEAST 5 TIMES; ON ROUGH SURFACE, DOWNHILL SURFACE OR WHEN WHEELS ENCOUNTER A MANHOLE OR STEEL PLATE ROAD COVER. PROBLEM IS RECURRING. CAR HAS 12,600 MILES ON IT. *CN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. SHE STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH SHE DROVE OVER A BUMP ON THE ROAD. WHILE HAVING HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD, A FEW SECONDS LATER THE BRAKES ENGAGED. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED 5 ADDITIONAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED AND NO REPAIRS HAD BEEN DONE AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT VARIOUS SPEEDS USING THE HEADLIGHTS DURING THE DAY THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 13000.

WHENEVER THE CONTACT ATTEMPTS TO BRAKE TRAVELING OVER A ROUGH TERRAIN AT A LOW SPEED THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WILL SUDDENLY DISENGAGE AND THEN CORRECT ITSELF. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 5600.
I HAVE HAD THE FOLLOWING OCCUR SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN JULY 2009: WHEN BRAKING ON SNOW OR ICE OR BRAKING WHEN PASSING OVER A BUMP OR POTHOLE THE BRAKES WILL FEEL AS IF THEY ARE SLIPPING AND THE CAR WILL ACCELERATE FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND. IT'S AS IF THE ABS IS RELEASING THE BRAKES TOO LONG BEFORE REENGAGING THEM, RESULTING IN THE CAR TO STOP DECELERATING MOMENTARILY. *TR

WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 30MPH TRAVELING OVER A ROUGH TERRAIN HE ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE AND NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD BEFORE THE BRAKES WOULD ACTIVATE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 1500.
I BOUGHT A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS II NOVEMBER 2009. WITHIN 1 MONTH PERIOD, I HAD EXPERIENCE TWO SEPARATE BRAKE PROBLEM. ONCE WAS PASSING A RAILWAY TRACK AND THE OTHER TIME WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN. BOTH TIMES I STEPPED THE BRAKE TO REDUCE SPEED AND FAILED. THAT MEANS THE BRAKE DID NOT REDUCE THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. FORTUNATELY, NO CAR WAS IN FRONT ME AND NO ACCIDENT HAPPENED. I THEN REPORTED TO MY DEALER AND SENT MY CAR BACK TO CHECK. THE DEALER TOLD ME THEY FAILED TO REPLICATE THE SITUATION AND EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL. NOTHING WAS DONE. THEY THEN TALKED TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE AND TOYOTA SAID IT IS NORMAL TO FEEL THE BRAKE DID NOT ENGAGE WHEN CROSSING A BUMP. I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED. *TR
MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, HAS ON AT LEAST FIVE OCCASIONS, SURGED FORWARD WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES, ESPECIALLY COMING OFF OF CRUISE CONTROL HEADING TO A HIGHWAY OFF RAMP. THESE HAVE OCCURRED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1 AND THE PRESENT, FEBRUARY 2. THE CAR SURGES FORWARD EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT ACCELERATING AND HAVE IN FACT HIT THE BRAKES. I THEN HIT THE BRAKES HARDER AND THE CAR HAS SLOWED. *TR
BRAKE PROBLEM WHEN ON UNEVEN SURFACE OR HILL, SOMETIMES TURNING. CAR HYDROPLANES AND BRAKES DO NOT WORK. HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES SINCE BUYING THE CAR LAST AUGUST. THREE TIMES HAVE COME CLOSE TO HITTING ANOTHER CAR. REPORTED PROBLEM TO DEALERSHIP. WAITING TO HEAR BACK. *TR

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD WHEN BRAKING UNDER NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. THE FAILURE HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING OVER A SPEED BUMP OR A POT HOLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS TOLD TO REMOVE THE FLOOR MATS BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED.THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE BECAUSE IT HAPPENS RANDOMLY . THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT THE CONTACT DID NOT RECEIVE AN ACCEPTABLE ANSWER FROM THEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,362.
AS I WAS GOING DOWNHILL, THE ROAD SURFACE WAS UNEVEN. I ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES. THE PEDAL WENT ALMOST TO THE FLOOR AS IF THERE WAS NO BRAKE FLUID. THE CAR CONTINUED TO GO FORWARD AS THE BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE. AS I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL FURTHER, THE BRAKES ENGAGED. *JB

2010 PRIUS PURCHASED JULY 2009. TURNING INTO MY DRIVEWAY WHILE BRAKING (WHICH HAD A POTHOLE IN FRONT OF IT) MY CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS LURCHING FORWARD OUT OF CONTROL AFTER IT HIT THE POTHOLE. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT THE POTHOLE WOULD IMPEDE MY FORWARD PROGRESS NOT INCREASE IT! I WAS GOING VERY SLOWLY SO THE INCIDENT WAS MOMENTARY, BUT IT DID SCARE ME. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE I LEARNED HOW TO AVOID THE POTHOLE. I THOUGHT IT WAS VERY STRANGE BUT ONCE I STARTED TO AVOID THE POTHOLE I FORGOT ABOUT IT. SO I DID NOT PURSUE IT UNTIL I READ THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ROUGH ROAD COMPLAINTS AND REALIZED THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO ME AND THAT I SHOULD REPORT IT HERE. THE DATES, TIME AND MILEAGE ARE ACTUALLY UNKNOWN BECAUSE I DID NOT MAKE A NOTE OF IT AT THE TIME. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2010 PRIUS IV IN JUNE 2009. I LIVE IN THE KANSAS CITY AREA. BEGINNING IN NOVEMBER WHEN THE WEATHER TURNED COLD, USUALLY BELOW FREEZING, I NOTICED THAT WHEN I APPLY MY BRAKES SOMETIMES THEY WILL SLIP JUST FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND. THIS USUALLY OCCURS BEFORE THE CAR HAS A CHANCE TO WARM UP BUT HAS OCCURRED WHEN THE CAR IS WARMED UP. THE BRAKES WILL SLIP WHEN I GO OVER A PORTION OF THE ROAD WHERE THE PAVEMENT IS BUCKLED, OR THERE IS A DEPRESSION SUCH AS DRIVING OVER A MANHOLE COVER, POTHOLE OR CONSTRUCTION CUT THAT WAS NOT PROPERLY FILLED. THE EXPERIENCE IS LIKE BRAKING OVER A SMALL PATCH OF ICE. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER OF THIS PROBLEM IN DECEMBER BUT DIDN'T MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED. AFTER READING AN AP NEWS RELEASE ON THIS TOPIC, WHICH DESCRIBED THE EXACT SYMPTOMS I AM EXPERIENCING, I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR 12 FEB TO HAVE THE BRAKES INSPECTED. I DON'T CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AS I ONLY EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM ONCE EVERY FEW WEEKS. *TR
ON THREE OCCASIONS, MY 2010 PRIUS "LEAPT FORWARD" WHEN I DROVE OVER A MAN-HOLE COVER. I HAVE READ THE DESCRIPTION OF THE BRAKING ISSUE ON THE 2010 PRIUS AND IT SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE MY EXPERIENCE. IT ONLY LASTS FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND, BUT IT IS QUITE FRIGHTENING WHEN IT HAPPENS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH HE APPLIED THE BRAKE PEDAL; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW DOWN INSTEAD IT ACCELERATED AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE DURING A TEST DRIVE. HE STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED SIX TIMES INTERMITTENTLY CONTACT IS CONCERNED THAT IF HE CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE THE FAILURE COULD CAUSE A CRASH TO OCCUR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 10,500.
DECELERATION, ROUGH ROAD SURFACE, BRAKES FAIL FOR A SHORT TIME. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 OR 4 TIMES SINCE PURCHASING THE CAR. I DID MENTION THIS TO MY SERVICE PERSON ON TUESDAY FEB 2 WHEN I WAS AT THE DEALER FOR A DIFFERENT ISSUE AND HE SAID HE HADN'T HEARD OF ISSUE ON MY PRIUS, AFTER HEARING THE NEW ON WED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM I CALLED DEALER BACK AND WILL HAVE CAR INSPECTED MONDAY MORNING FEB 8. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IN SEPT 2009. SINCE THEN, I HAVE HAD 3 OR 4 INSTANCES WHERE THE BRAKES LET GO MOMENTARILY AS MOUNTING REPORTS ARE SIMILARLY DESCRIBING. EACH INSTANCE HAS OCCURRED AT ROUGHLY THE SAME PLACE ON MY DRIVE HOME FROM MY CHILD'S DAY CARE, WHERE THE ROAD IS SLIGHTLY UNEVEN AND SLOPING DOWN, AS I AM BREAKING FOR A STOP SIGN. SINCE THIS IS A RESIDENTIAL AREA, I AM NOT DRIVING FAST TO BEGIN WITH (<20 MPH), AND THE BRAKES ONLY LET GO FOR 1-2 SECONDS. PRIOR TO HEARING ALL OF THESE OTHER REPORTS, I HAD NOT THOUGHT TO FILE MY OWN AND FOR THAT I APOLOGIZE. MY FEELING IS THAT UNLESS THIS ISSUE IS CORRECTED SOMEHOW BY TOYOTA, THESE INSTANCES WILL CONTINUE, AND I DO SEE POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT. *TR
WHEN DRIVING ON WET SURFACES, MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID WILL OCCASIONALLY SKID WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN AT SPEEDS UNDER 25MPH AND ONLY ON WET SURFACES. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN I WAS APPROACHING A STOP SIGN AT A LOW SPEED. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE CAR BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN WHEN IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT CAUSE. THE ACCELERATION ONLY LASTED FOR A SECOND OR TWO BEFORE THE BRAKES STARTED WORKING AGAIN. I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THE ENTIRE TIME AND APPLIED EVEN PRESSURE. THIS ISSUE ALSO OCCURS OFTEN WHEN PULLING INTO THE UNDERGROUND PARKING GARAGE OF MY CONDOMINIUM BUILDING. WHEN THE RAMP IS WET, THIS PROBLEM WILL OFTEN OCCUR. TO AVOID THIS OCCURRENCE WHEN PULLING INTO THE GARAGE, I MUST PROCEED AT A CAUTIOUS PACE, 5-7 MPH. THIS IS VERY DISCONCERTING BECAUSE I MUST MAKE A RIGHT-HAND TURN WITH THREE FEET FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE RAMP TO AVOID HITTING THE WALL OF THE GARAGE. THE LAST OCCURRENCE WAS ON JANUARY 29TH AT 7PM. THE ROADS WERE WET. AS I APPROACHED A STOP LIGHT TO MAKE A LEFT-HAND TURN, I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS I NORMALLY WOULD IN SUCH CONDITIONS. THE AFTER THE INITIAL DECELERATION, THE BRAKES FELT LIKE THEY HAD SLIPPED AND I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE (AS DESCRIBED BEFORE). I HAD TO TURN INTO THE ADJACENT LANE TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME BEFORE THE BRAKES WERE FULLY APPLIED. I ALL, THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED THREE TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON WET ROADS, AND 8+ TIMES WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE WET RAMP TO MY UNDERGROUND GARAGE. I HAVE CONTACTED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE TO MAKE THEM AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND WAS DIRECTED TO FILE A REPORT TO NHTSA. I ALSO CALLED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE AND WAS UNABLE TO READ A REPRESENTATIVE. *TR
I HAVE BRAKE PROBLEMS WITH MY 2010 PRIUS. NOW THAT I SEE IT'S IN THE NEWS I REALIZE I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. THE PRIUS HAS ISSUES WHEN I'M BRAKING AND I GO OVER ANY TYPE OF A BUMP IN THE ROAD, OR I GO OVER A POTHOLE COVER. REALLY THERE IS A BRAKING PROBLEM WHEN I AM BRAKING AND THE CAR IS DRIVING OVER DIFFERENT ROAD SURFACES, OR THERE IS BAD WEATHER. THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD- ALMOST FEELS LIKE IT'S SKIPPING A BEAT. IT MAKES MY HEART JUMP, SIMILAR TO A JOLT. I FEEL EVERY TIME THAT I WILL GET INTO AN ACCIDENT, BUT I HAVEN'T YET... THANKFULLY. THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY BEFORE SOMEONE DIES, OR GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED. THIS HAPPENS ON AVERAGE ABOUT 1-2 TIMES A WEEK. I HAVE NOTICED ISSUE WITH BRAKING. I REMEMBER IT HAD RAINED THE PREVIOUS NIGHT AND THE MORNING IT WAS FREEZING. I WAS DRIVING ON RT. 76 TO DROP MY SON OFF TO HIS WORK. ON SMALL STRETCH OF RT. 76 HAS THE 'CEMENT PATCH' - THOSE YOU TYPICALLY SEE ON A OVER PASS. FEARING ICING, I HIT THE BRAKE ONLY TO FEEL IT NOT RESPONDING. IN FACT, I FELT THE CAR SPEEDING UP. THE PATCH WAS JUST ABOUT 10-15 FT WIDE; THE MOMENT WE WERE OVER IT, I FELT THE BRAKES RESPOND. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IN AUGUST, 2009. DURING THE FALL, 2009, I EXPERIENCED TWO INCIDENTS, WHICH IN RETROSPECT, I THINK INVOLVED SUDDEN ACCELERATION. ON BOTH OCCASIONS, I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND WENT OVER A SPOT ON THE ROAD WHICH, BECAUSE IT WAS DARK, I COULDN'T SEE FOR SURE, BUT WHICH FELT LIKE A POT HOLE. (I ALSO THINK IT MAY HAVE BEEN RAINING ON BOTH OF THESE OCCASIONS, ALTHOUGH I CAN'T RECALL FOR SURE). IMMEDIATELY AFTER HITTING WHAT I THINK WAS A POT HOLE, I FELT THE CAR SUDDENLY AND DRAMATICALLY ACCELERATE. BOTH TIMES I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING. AT THE TIME, IT DID NOT OCCUR TO ME WHAT WAS GOING ON. BUT, NOW THINKING ABOUT IT, I THINK IT LIKELY THAT THE SUDDEN JOLT TO THE CAR, PERHAPS COMBINED WITH MOISTURE, CAUSED SOME TYPE OF ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION, WHICH THANKFULLY, WAS SHORT-LIVED (OR AT LEAST STOPPED BY BRAKING). SHORTLY AFTER THESE INCIDENTS, I MENTIONED THEM TO MY WIFE. SHE REPORTED THAT SHE HAD EXPERIENCED VERY MUCH THE SAME THING ON A SEPARATE (I.E., A THIRD OCCASION) DRIVING OUR PRIUS. *CN

I WAS DRIVING MY NEW 2010 PRIUS (APPROX. 250 MILES ON ODOMETER) WHEN APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT EARLIER TODAY WITH MY FOOT GENTLY APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE WHEN SUDDENLY THE CAR SURGED FORWARD ACCELERATING. I AM CERTAIN MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL NOR WAS ANYTHING ON THE FLOOR AND THE FLOORMAT WAS APPROPRIATELY POSITIONED. THE ACCELERATION ONLY LASTED A SECOND, IE ONCE I APPLIED MORE PRESSURE SHARPLY TO THE BRAKE PEDAL THE CAR SLOWED AND THE ACCELERATION CEASED. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME THIS HAS OCCURRED. *TR
THIS HAS HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY TEN TIMES SINCE WE BOUGHT OUR 2010 PRIUS IN AUGUST. I APPLY THE BRAKES, THE CAR STARTS TO SLOW DOWN, AND THEN ACCELERATES BRIEFLY. I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS JUST THAT THE BRAKES LET UP FOR A MOMENT, BUT THE LAST COUPLE OF TIMES IT HAS HAPPENED I REALIZED THAT IT'S MORE LIKE THE CAR ACTUALLY ACCELERATES FOR A MOMENT. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHEN I'M GETTING OFF THE HIGHWAY, ON THE EXIT RAMP, SO I'M GOING FOR A RELATIVELY FAST SPEED TO SLOWING DOWN. BUT IT HAPPENS OTHER TIMES, TOO--FOR INSTANCE, WHEN I'M DRIVING IN THE CITY AND STOPPING FOR A RED LIGHT. TONIGHT IT HAPPENED AND I WOULD SAY THAT THE CAR MOVED FORWARD QUICKLY FOR ABOUT 15 FEET. TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 MODEL: BRAKE LAG. I GATHER NHTSA IS CONSIDERING A RECALL. THIS IS TO FURTHER YOUR DATA. I TOOK MY 2010 PRIUS IN TO 355 TOYOTA, ROCKVILLE, IN NOVEMBER TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE BRAKES DISENGAGING WHEN BEING APPLIED OVER ROUGH TERRAIN, LEADING TO A 4 - 6 FOOT JUMP FORWARD THEN RE-ENGAGEMENT OF THE BRAKES. I LODGED THIS CONCERN AS PART OF GETTING AN OIL CHANGE SERVICE, AND I HAVE THIS COMPLAINT IN WRITING ON THE DOCKET. THEY TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS JUST NORMAL ANTILOCK BRAKING. THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE, CAUSING ABOUT A 4 - 6 FOOT JUMP BEFORE THE BRAKE REENGAGES. WITH ALL THE ICE WE HAVE HAD RECENTLY, I CAN NOW ASSURE MYSELF THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT ABOUT THE ANTILOCK BRAKES, WHICH HAVE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT FEEL, AS THEY SHOULD. I THINK THE PRIUS IS A GREAT CAR, BUT, THIS PROBLEM IS DANGEROUS AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED. MY WIFE'S 2010 PRIUS OCCASIONALLY SURGES FORWARD WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THIS TYPICALLY OCCURS WHEN DRIVING DOWN HILL AND OVER BUMPS. IT HAPPENS ABOUT 1 TIME PER 14 DAYS. THE SURGE IS ONLY FOR A SPLIT SECOND. CONTROL OF THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN LOST YET. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM
I WAS UNABLE TO SLOW DOWN GOING INTO AN INTERSECTION AT A REASONABLE RATE OF SPEED. WHILE I WAS NOT ACCELERATING, WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN AS I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED. THIS SAME BEHAVIOR HAS OCCURRED IN THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS SINCE I'VE OWNED THE PRIUS 2010 MODEL. IT SEEMS TO SKIP FORWARD OR ACCELERATE WHILE BRAKING ON A DOWNHILL OR UNEVEN SURFACE. BY THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO STOP I THE AIRBAGS HAD GONE OFF AND I HAD HURT MY NECK AND BACK. IT IS A NEW VEHICLE THAT NOW HAS ALMOST $14,000 DAMAGE AND WON'T BE FIXED FOR A MONTH. IF ANYTHING, I'M AN OVERLY CAUTIOUS DRIVER AND WONDERING WHAT I COULD HAVE DONE TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT. *TR

EACH TIME THE BRAKING RESUMED AFTER A SHORT MOMENT, AS THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS KEPT PRESSED. WHEN THE BRAKES WENT OUT, IT FELT AS IF THE CAR STARTED LURCHING FORWARD, CAUSING MOMENTARY PANIC WITH THE DRIVER AND THE PASSENGERS. I WAS CONCERNED AND ALARMED BY THE PROBLEM AND CALLED TOYOTA MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY (THE CAR DEALER WHERE WE BOUGHT THE CAR) TO REPORT THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS NOT SERIOUS AND THAT I DID NOT NEED TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT IT.. WHILE I DID NOT REALLY BELIEVE THE DEALER'S STORY, IT DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN SO I DID NOT PURSUE THE MATTER. AFTER TODAY'S ARTICLE IN THE NEW YORK TIMES, I NOW SEE THAT A NUMBER OF PRIUS 2010 OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND I WANT TO LET YOU KNOW I EXPERIENCED IT AS WELL. EVERY TIME WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED AND CAR THEN ROLLS OVER A BUMP OR HOLE IN PAVEMENT THIS ACCELERATION OCCURS. LAST TIME WAS ON DEC. 15. EAST HOUSTON IN NYC. COMING TO A LIGHT. BRAKES APPLIED. CAR WAS ALMOST AT A FULL STOP. TIRES TOUCHED ON GOOD SIZED FLAW IN THE PAVEMENT AND THE CAR SLIGHTLY SPED UP. I WAS REALLY FEARFUL THAT TIME THE PRIUS WAS GOING TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT. *TR
