MY 2007 RAV 4 HESITATES WHEN I DEPRESS GAS PEDAL. IT BEGAN HAPPENING SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE IN 2007 AND THE PROBLEM HAS INCREASED IN FREQUENCY & DURATION. YESTERDAY I STARTED A LEFT HAND TURN WHILE ONCOMING TRAFFIC WAS CLEAR, BUT BECAUSE OF VEHICLE'S HESITATION, IN MID-TURN, ONCOMING TRAFFIC SUDDENLY APPEARED AND HAD TO STOP FOR ME TO COMPLETE MY TURN. I NARROWLY AVOIDED BEING IN AN ACCIDENT, FOR WHICH I WOULD HAVE BEEN FOUND AT FAULT, AS I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. *TR
THIS IS A POSSIBLE EXPANSION OF THE PRESENT TOYOTA "SUDDEN ACCELERATION" INVESTIGATION. IT INVOLVES ONE MOMENTARY INCIDENT OF UNCOMMANDED ACCELERATION ON A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 VEHICLE IN SEPT. 2009. IT HAS NOT RECURRED NOR WAS IT REPORTED TO TOYOTA NOR THE NHTSA. WHILE TRAVELING ON AN OPEN HIGHWAY, WITH THE VEHICLE UNDER CRUISE CONTROL, I ATTEMPTED TO RESUME MY NORMAL CRUISING SPEED AFTER AN APPARENTLY SUCCESSFUL "BRAKE SHUTDOWN" OF THE SYSTEM. ON APPLYING THE "RESUME SPEED COMMAND", THE ENGINE WENT TO AN APPARENT FULL THROTTLE POSITION WITH THE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTING INTO "PASSING GEAR". THIS CONTINUED FOR A SHORT TIME, ESTIMATED TO BE LESS THAN 2 SECONDS, FOLLOWED BY A SHARP DECELERATION AND A SECOND FULL ACCELERATION (AGAIN OF A MOMENTARY LENGTH OF TIME). AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION WITH CONTINUED CRUISE CONTROL. AT NO TIME DID I APPLY MANUAL BRAKES OR SHIFT OUT OF "DRIVE". THE INCIDENT HAS NEVER REPEATED. THE REPORT IS STRICTLY TO INFORM YOU THAT THE APPARENT PROBLEM UNDER INVESTIGATION SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO 2009 MODEL YEAR TOYOTA'S BUT SHOULD GO BACK FURTHER INTO THEIR FLEET WITH "ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL". *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 RAV 4. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN THE GAS PEDAL REMAINED STUCK CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT HAD TO PUMP THE BRAKES WHICH RELEASED THE GAS PEDAL. OCCASIONALLY, THE CONTACT HAD TO SHIFT THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL AND PUMP THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN. THE CONTACT HAS CALLED THE MANUFACTURER BUT THEY COULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY RISK WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
I HAVE 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4. THE STEERING START MAKING KNOCKING / POPPING SOUND WHENEVER I TURN RIGHT OR LEFT. I FOUND TSB FROM THE WEBSITE WHICH IS T-SB-0318-08. THIS TSB IS TO REPLACE STEERING SHAFT. 2006,2007,2008 RAV 4 IS FALL INTO THIS TSB. THE PROBLEM IS TOYOTA WILL DO THIS TSB REPAIR ONLY THE CAR IS BELOW 36K MILE/36 MONTH WHICH IS UNDER MANUFACTURE WARRANTY. IF THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, CONSUMER HAS TO PAY ABOUT $700. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY CONSUMER HAS TO PAY FOR DEFECTIVE PART REPLACEMENT. IF I DON'T REPLACE THE STEERING SHAFT, I DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL BE SAFE FOR KEEP DRIVING OR NOT. TOYOTA MUST RECALL THE RAV 4 TO REPLACE THE STEERING SHAFT INSTEAD OF TSB REPAIR UNDER THE WARRANTY. STEERING IS DIRECTLY RELATED WITH DRIVER'S SAFETY. *TR
I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4. I NOTICED A CLANKING NOISE WHEN I TURNED THE WHEEL ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT. SO I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD "INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT NEEDS REPLACEMENT." MY CAR WAS JUST 1000 MILES OVER OF THE 36000 MILES WARRANTY. DEALER SAID IT WILL COST ME 600 PLUS TAX TO FIX IT. BUT THEY ALSO MENTIONED THIS IS NOT SOMETHING I HAVE TO FIX RIGHT AWAY. I FOUND OUT LATER THAT MANY TOYOTA RAV4 OWNERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. TOYOTA HAS A BULLETIN STATING THIS IS CAUSED BY A LACK OF GREASE AT ONE OF THE JOINTS. IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT TOYOTA SHOULD FIX AT THEIR COST. I THINK IT IS TIME FOR THE DEALER TO TAKE SOME ACTION REGARDING THIS. *TR
FELT A LOOSENESS IN THE STEERING, A POPPING NOISE WHEN MAKING TURNS. UNDER WARRENTY, AT APPROXIMATELY 33,000 MILES, THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT WAS REPLACED. AT APPROXIMATELY 56,000 MILES, THE SAME PROBLEM RECURRED. WAS ADVISED BY THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT HAD FAILED ONCE AGAIN. COST OF REPLACEMENT ESTIMATED AT $628.00. CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER AND RECEIVED A CASE MANAGER. CASE MANAGER INFORMED ME THE FINAL OFFER TOYOTA WOULD MAKE IS TO PAY THE COST OF THE PART, I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE APPROXIMATE $300.00 LABOR COSTS. THEY WOULD NOT GUARANTEE FUTURE REPLACEMENTS SHOULD THE PART FAIL AGAIN. CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT TOYOTA REFUSES TO PROPERLY ADDRESS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WITH MY 2 CHILDREN AND THE OIL HOSE BROKE. NO FAILURE LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASHBOARD. TOOK CAR TO CLOSEST REPAIR SHOP. THEY HAD TO ADD 5 QTS OF OIL SINCE IT LEAKED OUT. FOUND OUT THIS HAPPENS QUITE FREQUENTLY ON THE SAME ENGINE IN ANOTHER MODEL. THE OIL HOSE WAS REPLACED.*TR
I RECENTLY HAD TO REPLACE THE STEERING SHAFT ON MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. MY CAR WAS MAKING POPPING NOISES WHEN STEERING LEFT AND RIGHT. COME TO FIND OUT IT WAS THE STEERING SHAFT. MY CAR WAS ABOVE THE MILEAGE AND OUT OF THE MANUFACTURES WARRANTY. SINCE THERE WAS A TSB THEY SAID THEY WOULD TEMPORARILY FIX IT BY LUBING IT. THE ACTUAL REPLACEMENT OF THE STEERING SHAFT ON MY CAR COST ME OVER $755.08 OUT OF POCKET. I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY THIS SINCE I AM NOT SURE IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SAFE TO EVEN CONTINUE DRIVING MY CAR. I KNOW OF ONE COMPLAINT ON THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE AND I THINK IT IS RIDICULOUS THAT WE CONSUMERS SHOULD HAVE TO PAY THIS OUT OF OUR OWN POCKETS. TOYOTA SHOULD BE ISSUING A RECALL FOR THIS. *TR
MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 4CYL 4 X 4 HESITATES FOR SEVERAL SECONDS WHEN I DEPRESS THE GAS PEDAL. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE NEW IN 2007, BUT HAS RECENTLY BEGUN TO GET WORSE. TODAY AS I ATTEMPTED TO PULL INTO TRAFFIC WITH MY WIFE AND TWO SMALL CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE, IT HESITATED AND NEARLY GOT US INTO AN ACCIDENT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV-4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF SMOKE WAS RELEASED FROM THE TAIL PIPE WHEN FIRST STARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS BURNING 1.1 QUARTS OF OIL EVERY 2,300 MILES. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS RECOMMENDED TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE PERFORMED EVERY 5,000 MILES AND THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE FAILURE WOULD DESTROY THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THE OIL CONSUMPTION WAS NORMAL AND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED TO BURN 1 QUART OF OIL EVERY 1,200 MILES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE MADE A TURN IN ANY DIRECTION IT MADE A CLANKING SOUND IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT SINCE THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THE STEERING GEAR SHAFT, NUMBER ST001-08. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55000.
STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT CLUNKS AND IT IS GETTING WORSE. TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THE COMMON PROBLEM. *TR
2007 TOYOTA RAV 4 - CLUNKING AND POPPING NOISE WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. I WAS ADVISED BY MY SERVICE MANAGER TO REPLACE STEERING SHAFT BUT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY SINCE THERE IS NOT A RECALL. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR APPROX A YEAR NOW WITH NO RESOLUTION. THE NOISE IS GETTING WORSE AND HAPPENING MORE OFTEN. I HOPE WE DO NOT HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING BEFORE A RECALL IS DONE. *TR
1. LEADING UP : A FAULTY AND POORLY DESIGNED RUBBER OIL LINE WEATHERED WITHIN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. 2. FAILURE: WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, THE WEATHERED HOSE SNAPPED. THE CAR IMMEDIATELY SPILLED FOUR QUARTS OF OIL. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER LIT. THE WATER TEMPERATURE STAYED WITHIN RANGE. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. 3. REPAIR: TOYOTA REPLACED THE FAILED OIL LINE WITH THE SAME PART. NO ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS WERE PERFORMED DESPITE THE LIKELIHOOD OF SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE. THE OIL COMPARTMENT WAS LEFT DIRTY. THE ENGINE COVER WAS LEFT SOAKED IN OIL (IT'S A FOAM PART). *TR
ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE'S 2007 TOYOTA RAV4, THE MOTOR REVVED MOMENTARILY WHILE I WAS BRAKING. THE LAST INSTANCE WAS IN THE SUMMER OF 09 WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A CAMPGROUND AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH. A PERSON CROSSED THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME AND I APPLIED THE BRAKE TO LET HIM PASS. WHILE DRIVING THROUGH THE CAMPGROUND, THE MOTOR REVVED (I AM ESTIMATING IT REVVED FROM IDLE TO ABOUT 17-1800 RPM) AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD, STARTLING THE PEDESTRIAN CROSSING IN FRONT OF ME. FORTUNATELY MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AND I JUST APPLIED THE BRAKE HARDER AND NO ONE WAS HURT. ON SEVERAL OTHER OCCASIONS PREVIOUS TO THESE INCIDENTS, I EXPERIENCED SIMILAR PROBLEMS, AND I HAD PREVIOUSLY DISMISSED THEM THINKING THAT PERHAPS I COULD HAVE STEPPED ON THE BRAKE AND GAS AT THE SAME TIME. I KNOW THIS NOT TO BE THE CASE IN THIS LATEST INSTANCE BECAUSE MY WIFE AND I WERE RETURNING FROM THE BEACH AND I WAS BAREFOOT, SO I KNOW DID NOT STEP ON BOTH THE GAS AND BRAKE SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE GAS PEDAL ALSO DID NOT STICK. I WAS IDLING THROUGH THE CAMPGROUND AT THE TIME WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE GAS AT ALL. *TR
2 YEAR OLD 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. NO PRIOR ACCIDENTS. I WAS IN A PARKING LOT AND PARKED. I TURNED THEY KEY IN THE IGNITION AND THE SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. TOYOTA HAS DONE NOTHING HELP THE SITUATION. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TOYOTA WILL DO FOR ME BUT I AM LOOKING FOR SOMETHING. *TR
ENGINE OIL LEAK OVER SEVERAL WEEKS. UPON OPENING THE OIL FILL CAP, THE REST OF THE OIL CAME OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR. I WAS FORCED TO HAVE IT CARRIED TO THE DEALER BECAUSE OF THAT. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT IT IS V V T I HOSE ON ENGINE BANK 1 THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, THAT TOYOTA KNEW OF THE PROBLEM BUT THEY NEVER RECALLED TO FIX THE CARS, THEY FIXED THEM AS CUSTOMERS BROUGHT THEM IN (ACCORDING TO BULLETIN). IT TOOK ABOUT 10 DAYS TO FIX. A MECHANIC I KNOW WHO SAW THE INVOICE TOLD ME THAT TOYOTA REPLACED ALMOST HALF THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE( REPLACED BANK VTI HOSE, BOTH V V T I GEARS, CAM SHAFTS AND HOUSING A TOTAL OF 31 PARTS. I DID NOT HAVE TO PAY , BUT I WAS VERY UPSET AT TOYOTA FOR KNOWING THAT A PROBLEM EXISTED BUT DID NOT ALERTED CUSTOMERS. *TR
CLUNKING SOUND WHILE TURNING STEERING WHEEL AT LOW SPEEDS. TOYOTA ISSUED TSB 0318-08 REGARDING ISSUE AND HAS PER THE TSB "A NEW INTERMEDIATE SHAFT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ADDRESS THE CONDITION." DESPITE WIDESPREAD FAILURE OF STEERING LINKAGE MECHANISM TOYOTA WILL NOT REPLACE PART AT NO COST TO CONSUMER. *TR
WHENEVER I TURN THE WHEEL (DOES NOT MATTER WHAT DIRECTION) IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TURN IT MAKES A CLUNK NOISE, AND YOU CAN FEEL IT IN YOUR HANDS. *TR
AN INTENSE SQUEAK INITIATED THE VISIT TO THE AUTO DEALER. WE WERE INFORMED THAT THE WINDSHIELD WAS RUBBING ON THE VEHICLE FRAME AND TO FIX THE PROBLEM THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE WINDSHIELD. THE WINDSHIELD WAS REPLACED WHICH SOLVED THE PROBLEM FOR NOW. *TR
I OWN A TOYOTA 2007 RAV4 WHICH AS BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIPS SHOP OVER 10 TIMES FOR THE SAME TWO ISSUES BRAKES AND GRINDING NOISE, PER TOYOTA EACH TIME IT WAS DIFFERENT, BUT I KNOW IT WAS THE SAME TWO THINGS. IT'S LIKE TOYOTA IS FALSIFYING CUSTOMER'S CAR ISSUES WITH THEIR OWN WORDS INSTEAD OF MAKING PROPER DOCUMENTATION. IT STARTED OFF WITH THE BRAKES WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR THEY WERE MAKING A NOISE AND WHEN GOING OVER SPEED BUMPS THE CAR WOULD ACCELERATE INSTEAD OF STOPPING, BUT I THOUGHT THIS MAY BE AN ADDED FEATURE TO THE NEW CAR. THE FIRST REAL INCIDENT IS WHEN THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP AND I CRASHED INTO TO A SIDE RAIL. IT DIDN'T DO MUCH DAMAGE AND IT TOTAL ABOUT $400.00. THE CAR IS MAKING A METALLIC NOISE IN THE SUSPENSION AND THIS WAS REPORTED, BUT EACH AND EVERY TIME TOYOTA'S TECHS DRIVES WITH ME AND MY HUSBAND WHILE WE DRIVING THE CAR TO DUPLICATE THE NOISE TOYOTA'S TECHS SAID THIS NOISE WAS NORMAL. WE KNEW THIS NOISE WASN'T NORMAL BEHAVIOR OF A BRAND NEW CAR, I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER AUTO SHOP AND THEY VERIFIED THAT THE NOISE WAS IN THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM, THAT TOYOTA WOULD NEED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE BECAUSE THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, AND IT WOULD COST ME MONEY TO LOCATE THE NOISE. WHEN I TOLD TOYOTA THEY SAID THEY GIVE A CAR UNTIL THEY COULD FIND THE ISSUE, BY LETTING THEIR FIELD TECH LOOK AT THE CAR, AND I ASKED WHEN THIS TECH WOULD BE AVAILABLE. I WANTED TO SEE THIS PERSON LOOK AT THE CAR, BUT THEY CAME UP WITH A MILLION AND ONE REASONS THAT I COULD MEET WITH THE TECH? AFTER TALKING TO PEOPLE FROM THEIR CORP OFFICE ABOUT THE METALLIC NOISE AND THE BRAKES TOYOTA SAID, 'SINCE WE CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR IT'S UNDER WARRANTY SO IF SOMETHING HAPPENS IT WILL BE FIXED'. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THIS CAR TO KILL ME OR MY FAMILY FOR THE COMPANY TO LOOK AT THEIR FAULTS BECAUSE ALL WE DID WAS PURCHASED A CAR FROM THE TOP OF THE LINE AUTO MAKERS TO GET THIS KIND OF TREATMENT? *TW
AT LOW RPM THE ACCELERATOR AND/OR THE TRANSMISSION HAS A NOTICEABLE LAG. THIS OCCURS APPROX 50 % OF THE TIME. SEVERAL TIMES IT HAS PUT ME INTO A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN TRYING TO BLEND INTO TRAFFIC. MOST RECENTLY I WAS TAKING MY SON TO COLLEGE AND WAS ALMOST HIT BY A TRUCK ON THE PENN TURNPIKE. I HAVE BROUGHT IT IN TWICE TO THE DEALER ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT A ROAD TEST SHOWED "NORMAL OPERATION OF THE ACCELERATOR". I RECENTLY DID A WEB SEARCH AND FOUND THAT TOYOTA HAS STOPPED SELLING RAV 4 WITH V6 ENGINES IN AUSTRALIA FOR JUST THIS PROBLEM. IN JUNE , WHILE ALSO DRIVING MY SON TO COLLEGE I HAD THE AIR CONDITIONER ON FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS OF A 11 HOUR DRIVE. THE DRIVER SIDE FLOOR, AND TO A LESSER EXTENT THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR, FLOODED. UPON MY ARRIVAL I DRIED IT OUT THE BEST I COULD USING HOTEL TOWELS. A MUSTY SMELL LASTED ABOUT A DAY OR TWO THEN SUBSIDED. DRIVING BACK HOME SEVERAL DAYS LATER IT RAINED FOR MOST OF THE TRIP AND AGAIN THE CAR FLOODED . I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER SINCE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THEY TOLD ME THAT WEEP VENTS UNDER THE VEHICLE FOR THE AIR CONDITIONER AND MOON ROOF WERE CLOGGED THEREBY DIRECTING THE WATER INTO THE VEHICLE. THE CLEANED IT UP AS BEST THEY COULD BUT THAT THE MUSTY SMELL WAS STRONGER NOW. TO GET RID OF THAT WOULD REQUIRE PULLING THE SEATS AND RUGS TO PROPERLY CLEAN THE VEHICLE AND THAT WOULD COST APPROX $250. I OPTED NOT TO DO THAT AND DROVE FOR THE NEXT WEEK WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON TO DEHUMIDIFY THE CAR. I CHECKED TO OWNERS MANUAL AND FOUND NO MENTION OF CLEANING THESE WEEP HOLES/VENTS, AND IT IS NOT PART OF THE DEALERS MAINTENANCE POLICY TO CLEAN THEM. THE OWNERS MANUAL DID MENTION THAT IF THE FLOOR WAS TO GET WET THEN THERE WAS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE SIDE AIRBAG AND CURTAIN SHIELD AIRBAG ACTIVATING CORRECTLY (PAGE 379 OF OWNERS MANUAL). WATER MAY ALSO GET INTO AUDIO COMPONENTS OR OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ABOVE OR UNDER THE FLOOR CARPET AND CAUSE MALFUNCTION AND IT MAY CAUSE BODY CORROSION. *TR
WITHIN APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS OF THE PURCHASE OF OUR NEW 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 WE NOTICED A "CLUNKING" SOUND AND FEEL IN THE STEERING AT SLOW SPEED. THE PROBLEM WAS REPORTED TO THE DEALER, GETTLE TOYOTA OF BRADENTON, FLORIDA, AND WAS REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. THEY REFERRED TO THE PARTS REPLACED AS INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT/ STEERING SHAFT ASSY. (THE SERVICE WRITER SEEMED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS). THE SAME APPARENT PROBLEM APPEARED AGAIN IN APPROXIMATELY JUNE OF 2013 AND IS WORSE NOW IN JANUARY 2014. IT HAS BECOME QUITE ANNOYING AND NOW BOTH MY WIFE AND I WONDER IF THIS WILL BECOME A SAFETY CONCERN, I.E. LEADING TO A STEERING FAILURE. OUR ORIGINAL DECISION TO BUY THE RAV4 WAS PRIMARILY BASED ON A VERY HIGH SAFETY RATING AFTER WE WERE INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS INJURY CRASH WHICH DESTROYED OUR PREVIOUS VEHICLE. THE THROTTLE IN MY 2007 RAV4 V6 LIMITED HAS STUCK OPEN THREE TIMES IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS. IT HAPPENS AFTER I "FLOOR" THE ACCELERATOR. THE FIRST TIME OCCURRED IN MY GARAGE AS I WAS TRYING TO START THE ENGINE. I HAD TO TURN IT OFF. THE SECOND TIME WAS A WEEK LATER AS I WAS PASSING A TRUCK GOING UP A HILL ON A 3 LANE HIGHWAY. I WAS SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT, BUT IT WAS SCARY. I TOOK THE CAR TO A DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THE THROTTLE BODY HAD A LEAK, SO THEY REPLACED THE SEAL. I DID NOT EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM AGAIN FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN TWO DAYS AGO. I WAS ACCELERATING TO MERGE WITH TRAFFIC ON A FREEWAY. ABOUT 8 OR 9 MONTHS AGO, I WAS DOING MAYBE 45 MILES PER HOUR WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE RPMS WENT WILD, THE ENGINE HOWLED, AND MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 LIMITED SPED OFF AS IF SOMEONE HAD DUMPED A BOULDER ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. MY HEART WAS IN MY THROAT AS I TRIED TO STOP THE CAR. PRESSING THE BRAKE HARD DIDN'T DO IT. I THEN STUCK MY FOOT UNDERNEATH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND PUSHED UP WITH THE TOE OF MY SHOE A FEW TIMES. THAT WORKED AND SUBSEQUENTLY I COULD DEPRESS THE BRAKE AND THE CAR RESPONDED NORMALLY. I ASSUMED AT THE TIME THAT MAYBE THE DRIVER'S-SIDE FLOOR MAT HAD SOMEHOW CREPT UP AND IMPEDED THE FREE OPERATION OF THE PEDAL, A THEORY THAT TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS ALSO SEEMED TO FIND PLAUSIBLE (THOUGH NOT FOR THE RAV4, APPARENTLY). SO I THREW OUT THE MAT AND DIDN'T REPLACE IT WITH ANYTHING. WE HAVE DIRTY CARPETING NOW, BUT WE ARE ALIVE. OF COURSE, IN RECENT WEEKS, THE WORLD HAS LEARNED THAT MILLIONS OF TOYOTAS ARE POTENTIALLY AFFLICTED WITH A STICKY ACCELERATOR PEDAL. TWO WEEKS AGO, WE DROVE OUR CAR TO THE DEALER, DOWNEAST TOYOTA IN BREWER, MAINE, WHEN IT WAS TIME FOR ITS 60,000-MILE SERVICE ANYWAY, AND WE INSISTED THAT THE ACCELERATOR BE REPLACED. WE DISCOVERED LATER THAT THEY HADN'T DONE SO, EVEN THOUGH WE ADVISED THEM CLEARLY THAT WE?D HAD A POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING INCIDENT INVOLVING THE ACCELERATOR. SEVERAL YEARS AGO I NOTICED A POPPING NOISE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED. I THOUGHT IT WAS IN THE STEERING WHEEL BECAUSE I FREQUENTLY USED THE TILT AND TELESCOPE FEATURES TO LET ME USE MY WORK LAPTOP WHILE IN THE CAR. (I AM A RETIRED HOSPICE NURSE.) I JUST FIGURED IT WAS AGING FROM OVERUSE. HOWEVER, LAST WEEK I TOOK THE 2007 RAV4 IN TO MY TIRE DEALER AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE ALIGNMENT WHILE THEY DID SOME OTHER WORK. THE MECHANIC WAS SHARP AND TOLD ME THAT HE HAD FIRST THOUGHT THE SAME THING ABOUT THE STEERING WHEEL BEING THE SOURCE OF THE NOISE, BUT INVESTIGATED FURTHER AND FOUND IT WAS THE "INTERMEDIATE SHAFT" OF THE STEERING SYSTEM. HE TOLD ME THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT IT. I'VE LOOKED UP THE TSB'S AND THEY ARE 0318-08 AND ST001-08, AND THEY DESCRIBE MY CAR EXACTLY. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TOMORROW-2-3-12-TO HAVE A LOCAL DEALER LOOK AT IT. THE CAR HAS 69659 MILES ON IT NOW, BUT ONLY 49882 WHEN I RETIRED IN MAY OF '10 AND IT WAS MAYBE A YEAR BEFORE THAT (AT 33842 MILES) THAT THE NOISE STARTED. I WAS TURNING INTO A DRIVEWAY WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHEN MY 2007 RAV4 SUDDENLY BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. THE RPM'S WERE OVER 6000. I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER THAT DAY AND THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK BUT TOLD ME THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. AFTER A DANGEROUS SURGE-AT-STOP PROBLEM, WE TOOK OUR 2007 RAV4 TO OUR DEALER YESTERDAY, BUT SO FAR THEY CLAIM THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. WE TOLD THE DEALER THAT WE DON'T WANT THE CAR BACK UNTIL THEY FIX THIS LIFE-THREATENING CONDITION. YESTERDAY WAS ACTUALLY THE THIRD TIME THAT THIS HAPPENED, AND EACH TIME THE PROBLEM WAS MORE INTENSE THAN THE PRIOR INCIDENT. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, AROUND THREE WEEKS AGO, MY HUSBAND WASN'T SURE IF HE HAD ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE ACCELERATOR, SO HE IGNORED IT. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED, FIVE DAYS AGO, HE WAS MORE AWARE, AND KNEW WHERE HIS FOOT WAS PLACED, AND KNEW FOR SURE THAT THIS WAS AN ENGINE SURGE ENTIRELY UNRELATED TO ANYTHING HE WAS DOING. IT WAS ONLY BECAUSE HE HAD HIS FOOT PLACED FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE THAT HE WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE RAV4 AND PREVENT IT SURGING PAST THE RED LIGHT. YESTERDAY WAS THE WORST INCIDENT, SINCE THE SURGE HAPPENED, AGAIN AT A RED LIGHT, WITH CARS PASSING IN FRONT OF OUR RAV4 (WE WERE FIRST IN LINE) AND WHEN MY HUSBAND JAMMED HIS FOOT HARDER ON THE BRAKE, THE ENGINE SURGED EVEN HARDER, AND LOUDER, AND HE HAD TO REALLY FORCE THE BRAKE PEDAL DOWN. IF OUR DAUGHTER HAD BEEN DRIVING THE RAV4 THERE IS NO DOUBT IN OUR MINDS THAT SHE WOULD HAVE GONE RIGHT INTO THE INTERSECTION, AND EITHER BROADSIDED A VEHICLE, OR BEEN BROADSIDED HERSELF, WITH CATASTROPHIC RESULTS. HAD TO REPLACE WHEEL BEARING AND WIRING DUE TO CORROSION, FREE OF CHARGE NOW OTHER SIDE HAS SAME WHEEL BEARING, CORROSION PROBLEM AND THEY WANT $1000.00. HAVE ALSO HAD A CLUNKING IN STEERING COLUMN (BAD KNUCKLE JOINT) THAT TECH'S HAVE NOT FOUND. HEAR THAT WOULD COST AT LEAST $800.00. THEY ALSO SAY WATER PUMP LEAKING AND NEED REPLACEMENT TO PREVENT ENGINE DAMAGE ANOTHER APPROX. $1000.00. I'VE BEEN ONLINE AND THESE ARE ALL PROBLEMS DISCUSSED BY OTHER RAV4 OWNERS. MY WIFE WAS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF AN INTERSTATE WHEN OUR TOYOTA 2007 RAV4 V6 HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF AN OIL HOSE WHICH RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF ALMOST ALL THE OIL IN THE ENGINE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. THE 3.5L V6 ENGINE IN THIS VEHICLE IS IDENTICAL TO THE V6 IN THE TOYOTA AVALON WHICH IS EXPERIENCING A VERY LARGE NUMBER OF FAILURES SUCH THAT A TSB WAS ISSUED. THE AVALON STARTED USING THIS ENGINE PRIOR TO THE RAV4. I WAS TOLD BY A PARTS MANAGER THAT THERE ARE SO MANY OF THESE FAILURES THAT OWNERS ARE WAITING 6 WEEKS FOR THE BACKORDERED REPLACEMENT PART AND THAT 2500 PARTS ARE ON NATIONAL BACKORDER. TOYOTA KNOWS THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS WITH THE V6 RAV4 SINCE THE ENGINE IS IDENTICAL BUT REFUSES TO PUT OUT AN ASSOCIATED TSB FOR THE RAV4. THIS FAILURE IS DANGEROUS IN THAT IT CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO LOCK UP ON THE HIGHWAY POTENTIALLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. TOYOTA IS "QUIETLY" REPLACING THE FAILING HOSE WITH A METAL HOSE ONLY AFTER A FAILURE HAS OCCURRED.(A DEFECT ADMISSION OF A DESIGN FLAW). A RECALL IS COMPLETELY WARRANTED FOR THIS DEFECT. OIL HOSE RUPTURED ON '07 TOYOTA RAV-4 DUMPING ALL ENGINE OIL. ENGINE THEN WAS STARVED FOR OIL AND RUINED INTERNAL ENGINE PARTS. TOYOTA IS AWARE THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS HOSE LEAKING AND A TSB EXISTS FOR THE FIX. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO RECALL OR EVEN A MANDATORY INSPECTION OF THIS HOSE AT REGULAR SERVICE INTERVALS. OUR ISSUE WAS A COMPLETE RUPTURE AND IT WOULD HAVE COST US THOUSANDS TO REPAIR ON OUR OWN IF THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. IT COULD HAVE EVEN LEAD TO A CRASH AS THE TIRES AND BRAKES GOT COVERED WITH OIL. *TR

IN 2009 I COULD HEAR WIND IN THE DRIVER'S WINDOW; I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO BE CHECKED, TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID I WAS HEARING THINGS. 2.THE DRIVER'S DOOR CAUGHT FIRE (I HAD THE KEYS WITH ME) I HAD TO SPEND $606.01 TO FIX IT, TOYOTA SAID THERE WAS WATER INTRUSION (I THOUGHT, IT PROBABLY WAS, BECAUSE OF THE AIR LEAK PREVIOUSLY REPORTED IN 2009) 3. THE STEERING WHEEL FELT STRANGE WHEN I DROVE, I TOOK IT BACK FOR SERVICE, THE DIAGNOSIS WAS STEERING SHAFT INTERNAL FAILURE WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED; I FOUGHT TO GET THAT FIXED OUT OF WARRANTY. 5. ON NOVEMBER 25, 2011 I WAS DRIVING, THE WINDOW FELL IN ON ME AND ON NOVEMBER 26, 2011, I HAD TO HAVE THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW REGULATOR REPLACED FOR $338.30 7. NOW, OIL IS LEAKING INTO THE MUFFLER. (I PURCHASE OIL FREQUENTLY) THIS VEHICLE IS ONLY 4.5 YEARS OLD AND SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY OF THESE MAJOR PROBLEMS, WHEN I PURCHASED THIS RAV4, IT WAS GOING TO BE MY LAST VEHICLE PURCHASE BECAUSE TOYOTA ADVERTISES LONGEVITY OF THEIR PRODUCTS. I ALSO KNOW PEOPLE WHO DRIVE 1990 AND 1995 TOYOTA PRODUCTS WHO HAVE NEVER HAD ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS. I WAS ALSO TREATED VERY POORLY DURING SOME OF MY REPAIR VISITS. AFTER THE DOOR CAUGHT ON FIRE, I HAD A MEETING WITH THE OWNER OF TOYOTA OF BRAINTREE, [XXX] BUT HIS RESOLUTION WAS GIVING ME $13,000.00 FOR MY VEHICLE (WHICH I OWN) AND ME PURCHASING A BRAND NEW VEHICLE, WHICH MEANT I WOULD HAVE A MONTHLY PAYMENT. I DID CONTACT TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS IN CALIFORNIA AND FILED A COMPLAINT AND NEVER RECEIVED ANY RESOLUTION. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY HER LOCAL DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 9,563. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER REQUESTED A TOYOTA ENGINEER COME TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. TOYOTA RAV4 2007. I'VE BEEN HEARING UNUSUAL SOUND WHEN I TURN STEERING WHEEL SPECIALLY FROM PARKING POSITION. TOYOTA ELK GROVE CA SAID THIS IS NORMAL. I DON'T THINK THIS IS NORMAL.
