THE REAR FRAME HAS EXCESSIVE CORROSION ALONG LONGITUDINAL STRUCTURAL MEMBERS AND THE CROSS MEMBER ABOVE THE SPARE TIRE. *TR
I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR LATCH ON MY DOOR 5 TIMES. THE BODY SHOP SAYS THAT THE REAR DOOR IS SO RUSTED OUT THIS TIME, THAT IT CANNOT BE FIXED. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM TO TOYOTA AND THEY IGNORE IT. I HAVE SEEN MANY WEBSITES WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. IT IS A POOR DESIGN AND THE DOOR IS RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE! *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHEN THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT THE ENTIRE FRAME WAS SEVERELY RUSTED. THE CONTACT WAS ALSO ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO OPERATE. THE CONTACT DID NOT CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 104,000.
WAS ACCELERATING ONTO THE FREEWAY TODAY AND IT FELT AS IF THE LEFT BRAKES CAME ON ALONG WITH A SCREECHING SOUND AND IT MADE ME SWERVE LEFT. I WAS ABLE TO AVOID SWERVING INTO MERGING TRAFFIC BUT I NEARLY CRASHED. OVER THE LAST WEEK THE VSC OFF LIGHTS HAVE STARTED GOING ON AND OFF AND AFTER REVIEWING SOME LITERATURE ON LINE IT SEEMS THAT HUNDREDS OF OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM. THE 2003 SEQUOIA WAS ACTUALLY RECALLED FOR THIS SAME THING. VERY DANGEROUS AND NOW I WILL HAVE TO CONTACT THE DEALER TO SEE ABOUT IT GETTING FIXED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. I HAVE TWO YOUNG CHILDREN AND THIS REALLY PISSES ME OFF. EVEN IF THERE IS NOT A RECALL I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF THE DANGER I WAS PUTTING MYSELF IN. I HAVE BEEN HAPPY WITH MY TRUCK FOR 8 YEARS BUT AFTER THIS INCIDENT AND SEEING WHAT OTHERS HAVE GONE THROUGH I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA!!! *TR
STARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE VSC AND THE TRAC OFF LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AND WOULD NOT TURN OFF. TOOK TO AUTHORIZED TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER. WAS INDICATED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND THAT THERE HAS BEEN A SERVICE RECALL ON 2003 MODELS BUT NOT FOR 2002. APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM ACROSS MODEL YEARS. *JS
I WAS DRIVING ON THE FWY AN THE LIGHTS OF THE TRACTION CONTROL TURN ON. THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND TURN OFF. SINCE THEN IT HAPPEND MANY TIME A LOW SPEED. *JS

THE VEHICLE WAS EXAMINED AT OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER ON 1/5/2012 BECAUSE OF MAKING A GRINDING NOISE AND SHAKING WITH ACCELERATION AT SPEEDS ABOVE 20 MPH. IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE EXTENSIVE RUST DAMAGE TO THE FRAME WITH A LARGE RUST HOLE IN THE RIGHT FRONT AREA AT THE SWAY BAR BUSHING BRACKET. THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING WAS RUSTED AND LEAKING FLUID, THE RIGHT AND LEFT SWAY BARS WERE BROKEN, BOTH FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS WERE STUCK AND THE ROTORS BADLY RUSTED. REPAIRS FOR THE FRAME ALONE WERE ESTIMATED AT OVER $10,000 WITH MORE THAN THAT AMOUNT TO TAKE CARE OF THE OTHER ISSUES. THIS SEQUOIA HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED ON A REGULAR SCHEDULE, WASHED REGULARLY AND KEPT AT NIGHT IN A GARAGE. THE BODY AND INTERIOR ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE CAR HAS ONLY 76,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. IT WAS QUITE A SHOCK TO GO FROM A CAR WE RELIED UPON TO CARRY US SAFELY IN WINTER WEATHER TO ONE WHICH HAS HAD TO BE ABANDONED FOR SCRAP. I UNDERSTAND THAT FRAME RUST ISSUES HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS PROBLEM FOR MANY TOYOTA MODELS INCLUDING THE TACOMA AND TUNDRA RESULTING IN RECALLS. THE SEQUOIA NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO THIS LIST. *TR
I WENT TO EXIT MY CAR ONE NIGHT AND THE DRIVERS DOOR HANDLE SNAPPED OFF IN MY HAND LEAVING ME TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO EXIT MY VEHICLE OTHER THAN THE ONE THAT ALL PEOPLE USE TO EXIT THEIR VEHICLE THE DRIVERS DOOR. SHOULD I HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AT THE TIME I WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAPPED IN MY VEHICLE. PRIOR TO THAT MY REAR LID HANDLE STOPPED WORKING. TOYOTA REFUSED TO FIX IT BECAUSE THE WARRANTY IS UP AND THEY FEEL THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. IN CONTACTING MY LOCAL DEALER I WAS TOLD THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AND WAS JUST LAUGHED AT I WAS TOLD WHAT DO YOU EXPECT IT IS ONLY PLASTIC.
MY 2002 SEQUOIA KEEPS MAKING A GRINDING NOISE WHEN I HIT THE GAS FROM A STOP LIGHT AND THE STABILITY CONTROL KEEPS COMING ON AND THERE IS A LOSS OF POWER AND I CANT DO NOTHING UNTIL HE STABILITY CONTROL QUITS WHAT ITS DOING. POINT BLANK TOYOTA NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING WITH ALL THESE 2002 SEQUOIAS AND THERE FAILING TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM. THERE ARE PEOPLES LIVES AT STAKE AND I'VE DONE HAD ALL THE WHEEL SENSORS CLEANED AND THE SYSTEM RESET AND THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR KIDS THAT HAD TO DRIVE AN UNCONTROLLABLE VEHICLE YOU WOULD DO EVERYTHING YOU COULD TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS OR IF IT CAN BE FIXED. WERE SPENDING LOTS OF MONEY FIXING THESE SEQUOIAS AND IT NEEDS TO STOP. ALL IM ASKING IS PLEASE JUST TO CONSIDER RECALLING THESE DANGEROUS VEHICLES. *TR
DRIVING ON NY THRUWAY TRANSMISSION WENT. TOWED TO NEAREST SERVICE STATION WHERE NEW TRANSMISSION WAS INSTALLED AFTER WHICH WE WERE TOLD THAT THE CHASSIS WAS EXTREMELY RUSTY. TWO DAYS LATER, THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON - TOOK CAR TO SEARS TO FIND OUT TRANS FLUID LEAK AND FRAME ROTTED AND DECLINED SERVICING VEHICLE. FOLLOWED UP AT TOYOTA DEALER FOR LEAK AND FRAME INSPECTION. TECHNICIAN FOUND POWER STEERING LINE LEAKING POWER STEERING FLUID AND EXCESSIVE FRAME PERFORATION / CORROSION. THEY WOULD NOT WORK ON IT. TECHNICIAN INSTALLED A NEW HOOK LOCK AND CABLE ASSEMBLY AS HOOD WOULD NOT LOCK.
MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAS EXTENSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. OTHER SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT THEIR SEQUOIA WITH RUSTY FRAME IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. TOYOTA TUNDRA FROM SAME YEAR, BUILT ON SAME FRAME HAVE BEEN SAFETY RECALLED DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE RUSTY FRAME. UPDATED 12/29/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED SINCE FILING THE COMPLAINT, HE HAD HIS VEHICLE INSPECTED AT THE DEALER AND IT WAS DETERMINED THE RUST ON THE VEHICLE WAS SURFACE RUST AND THERE WAS NO LOSS OF STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. UPDATED 12/30/11 *TR
VSC LIGHT, TRAC OFF LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALL CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. I TOOK VEHICLE TO AUTOZONE AND THEY CHECKED THE COMPUTER WITH THE RESULT ERROR 5 CYLINDER MISFIRE, FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, THE OTHER 2 WARNING LIGHTS THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME ANY ADVICE ON. *TR
2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 - 66,462M. MECHANIC DISCOVERED THAT THE FRAME OF THIS VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY RUSTED. HOLES IN THE FRAME AND LOTS OF RUST IN KEY JOINS COMPROMISING THE SAFETY OF VEHICLE. TOYOTA CORP. HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE FRAMES OF THE TACOMAS AND TUNDRAS HAD A PREMATURELY RUSTING PROBLEM. THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAVE THE SAME FRAME. TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL ON THESE TWO VEHICLES BUT NOT THE SEQUOIAS. UPON CONTACTING TOYOTA CORP. THEY ASKED THE VEHICLE BE TAKEN TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR FRAME INSPECTION. THE INSPECTION REPORT SAY: CUSTOMER REQ. INSPECTION - -> LOOKS LIKE HAMMER HOLE IN BOTTOM OF LT RAIL @ TRANS MOUNT CROSS MEMBER LOTS OF ROT/ MISSING METAL FROM FT RT SWAY BAR MOUNT LOTS OF ROT AT RR CROSS MEMBER (THAT SPARE HANGS FROM) WHERE MEETS RAIL ON LT SIDE. MY MECHANIC SAID THAT IN ALL HIS LIFE WORKING WITH VEHICLES HAS NEVER SEEN A VEHICLE SO DETERIORATED FROM RUST. ADVISED TO CONTACT TOYOTA BECAUSE OF THE TUNDRA'S RECALL. TOYOTA CORP. WILL NOT ADDRESS MY VEHICLE NOR THOSE OF OTHER SEQUOIA OWNERS THAT I FOUND ON INTERNET FORUMS WITH THE EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEMS. THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW INSTANCES WHERE TOYOTA HAS REPLACED THE FRAME IN VEHICLES WITH HIGHER MILEAGE AND OLDER VEHICLE. TOYOTA CORP. CLAIMS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF THE 36K MILE WARRANTY THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PREMATURE ROTTING OF THE FRAME. VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN AN AVERAGE OF 7K MILES A YEAR, MAINTAINED PROPERLY AND IN MINT CONDITION. THE SEQUOIAS SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE FRAME RECALL FROM TOYOTA SINCE IT IS THE SAME FRAME AND MANUFACTURER OF THE TACOMA AND TUNDRA MODELS WHICH TOYOTA HAS ACCEPTED THESE VEHICLES WERE MANUFACTURED WITH SUBSTANDARD FRAMES WHICH LEADS TO PREMATURE ROTTING. I ASK YOUR AGENCY TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE THIS FRAME ISSUE WHICH MAY BE A SERIOUS SAFETY VIOLATION SPECIALLY FOR THOSE UNAWARE THAT THEIR VEHICLES ARE ABOUT TO COLLAPSE BECAUSE OF FRAME ROT. *TR
I HAVE A SEQUOIA 2002. NO PREVIOUS HISTORY OF BIG MECHANICAL OR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. RECENTLY I EXPERIENCE AN INCIDENT WERE I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING IN THE HIGHWAY. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE YAW RATE SENSOR AND THAT IT WAS VERY COSTLY TO REPAIR. I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT MANY SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCE. I UNDERSTAND MY VEHICLE IS WAY PAST WARRANTY PERIOD BUT LET ME TELL YOU, IN SECURITY ISSUES WARRANTIES DOES NOT EXPIRES AND TOYOTA SHOULD PROVIDE FOR REPAIRS OR RECALL OR WHATEVER RESOURCES THEY HAVE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. *TR
DRIVING AT 60 MPH THE VSC LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE WENT TO THE RIGHT BY ITSELF.I SLOW DOWN, AND THEN THE SKID TRACTION LIGHTS CAME ON AND A LOUD NOISE WAS COMING OUT OF THE FRONT....I THINK THAT IF I WAS DRIVING FASTER I COULD OF HAVE AN ACCIDENT...THE SAME THING HAPPENED YESTERDAY... *TR
5TH/REAR DOOR FLEW OPEN SOMETIME BETWEEN COMING TO A NORMAL STOP AT 40 MPH EMPTYING ALL THE CONTENTS OF THE REAR. THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN FOR TWO DAYS OR SO PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT, (FOR THE SECOND TIME IN ABOUT A MONTH). *TR
WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY, SUDDENLY THERE WAS A LOUD GRINDING NOISE IN THE FRONT END OF THE CAR, THE CAR LOST ALL POWER, AND THE VSC ALARM WENT OFF AND THE VSC DASHBOASD LIGHTS WERE FLASHING. THIS LASTED FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS AND THEN STOPPED. THIS HAS HAPPENED AGAIN AND AGAIN AT ALL DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND NOW THE VSC LIGHTS ARE ON ALL THE TIME AND THE GRINDING HAPPENS INTERMITTENLY. *TR
THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS NEEDED REPLACING THE MECHANIC CALLED ME INDICATING THE CALIPERS ALSO NEEDED REPLACING DUE TO RUST. ALSO THE ENTIRE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE IS RUSTED HE INDICATED OTHER TOYOTA CUSTOMERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM FRAME CORROSION. I CALLED TOYOTA AND FILED A COMPLAINT, I FOUND OUT TOYOTA HAD REPLACED TUNDRA FRAMES (SAME FRAME AS THE SEQUOIA) BUT THEY WOULD NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 89,000 MILES AND IS VERY WELL MAINTAINED. THE FRAME IS IN VERY BAD SHAPE I FEEL IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I UNDERSTAND OTHER TOYOTA SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN A VERY EXPENSIVE VEHICLE. ANOTHER REASON TO BUY AMERICAN! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT ABNORMALLY ILLUMINATED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO DECELERATE INDEPENDENTLY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE TURNED THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL OFF BUT IT RE-ENGAGED INDEPENDENTLY AS THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.
IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC AT LAUNCH VEHICLE ABS ENGAGED WITHOUT WARNING REPEATEDLY WITH LOUD GRINDING NOISES AND THE ABS LIGHT, TRACTION LIGHT AND VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT ALL CAME UP. STOPPED VEHICLE, TURNED OFF ENGINE, WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND ALL LIGHTS WERE GONE UPON RESTART. HOWEVER THIS PROBLEM WORSENED CONSIDERABLY AND MORE OFTEN THROUGH THE OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 2011 MONTHS, TO THE POINT OF OCCURRING EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AS THE DATE OF THIS WRITING, DECEMBER 3RD 2011. NEW WORSENED SYMPTOMS NOW INCLUDE FLASHING VSC (VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL) AT LAUNCH FROM A STOP, WHICH CUTS ENGINE POWER AND COMPROMISES ACCURATE STEERING. SOMETIMES THE ABS, TRAC AND VSC LIGHTS COME UP IMMEDIATELY, SOMETIMES ONLY AFTER REPEATED INTRUSIVE ACTIVATIONS OF ABS/TRAC/VSC. ALL THESE WARNING LIGHTS ALSO STAYED ON ONCE FOR TWO ENTIRE DAYS AFTER LEAVING THE VEHICLE REST OVERNIGHT. ALL THESE DANGEROUS RANDOM INTERVENTIONS OF THE ABS/TRAC/VSC ELECTRONICS STARTED AFTER THE FRONT ROTORS AND PADS WERE CHANGED BY A PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC (A1-UNITY BODY, 1420 HOWE ST IN VANCOUVER, BC, CANADA). THE VEHICLE WAS FEDERALLY AND PROVINCIALLY INSPECTED FOR CANADIAN IMPORTATION BY THE SAME MECHANIC BEFORE THESE PROBLEMS STARTED TO HAPPEN. IT WAS DEEMED TO BE IN EXCEPTIONAL MECHANICAL AND WORKING CONDITION FOR ITS AGE AND MILEAGE. HOWEVER THE VEHICLE IS NOW LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE OF THIS ABS/TRAC/VSC DEFECT, DESPITE IT BEING OTHERWISE PERFECTLY DRIVABLE. TOYOTA MUST ISSUE THE SAME RECALLS THAT THEY POSTED FOR DEFECTIVE TRAC AND VSC FOR THE 2003 YEAR SEQUOIA MODELS FOR THE 2002 SEQUOIA MODELS. SEQUOIA VEHICLES HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE UPDATES AS FAR AS ABS/TRAC/VSC SYSTEMS ARE CONCERNED BETWEEN 2001 AND 2003, PROOF BEING THAT SUBSEQUENT MODEL YEARS FROM 2001 ALL EXPERIENCE THE SAME DEFECTS FOR THE SAME REASONS. 2001-2002 SEQUOIA VSC RECALLS NEED TO BE ISSUED NOW! *TR
THE ABS LIGHT IS ON CONSTANTLY EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE HAS NOT SUFFERED ANY INCIDENTS, THE VSC/TRACK LIGHT IS ON SOMETIMES IT LASTS UP TO ONE WEEK UNTIL I DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE CABLE OF THE BATTERY, RECENTLY THE SECURITY LIGHT STARTED FLASHING CONSTANTLY, I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT CARS AND IS ALREADY ALTERING MY BLOOD PRESSURE. *TR
MY 2002 SEQUOIA HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BY THE BOOK YET THE RUST OF THE FRAME AND THE DIFFERENTIAL HAVE LEFT THIS VEHICLE AS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. I AM TOLD THAT THE LEAK OF TRANSMISSION FLUID IS BECAUSE THE DIFFERENTIAL IS ALMOST RUSTED THROUGH. I KNOW TOYOTA HAS HAD RUST ISSUES AND MY PREVIOUS TOYOTA LANDCRUISER HAD RUST ISSUES AS WELL. NOW THAT IT HAS HAPPENED A SECOND TIME I DECIDED TO INVESTIGATE. PLEASE UPDATE ME. *TR
THE VSC OFF INDICATOR LIGHT ALONG WITH THE VSC AND SKID LIGHT AND BUZZER ACTIVATES. THIS CAUSES THE SKID CONTROL TO ACTIVATE FRONT BRAKES ON ONE SIDE WITH A GRINDING NOISE AND THE STEERING WHEEL TO PULL HARD TO ONE SIDE. I'M CONCERNED THIS MAY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT !
FAILED COMPONENTS: PREMATURE FRAME ROT I'M AN OWNER OF A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA LOCATED IN THE NORTHEAST US. I RECENTLY LEARNED THAT THIS VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS STATE SAFETY INSPECTION, DUE TO RUST HOLES IN THE FRAME. I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF THIS VEHICLE, KEEPING IT WASHED ESPECIALLY IN WINTER MONTHS. THE BODY IS IN SPOTLESS CONDITION WITH NO RUST. TOYOTA BLAMES THE HEAVY USE OF SALT IN THE NE. THIS IS NO EXCUSE...I HAVE A 1990 MINIVAN THAT IS GARAGED ALONG WITH AND DRIVEN SIMILAR TO MY TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND THE MINIVAN'S FRAME HAS VERY LITTLE RUST. I RECENTLY LEARNED FROM MY MECHANIC THAT THE FRAME OF MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAS MULTIPLE RUST HOLES AND IS SO BADLY ROTTED THAT IT WILL NOT PASS THE STATE SAFETY INSPECTION. THEREFORE, I HAD MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SCHEDULE AN INSPECTION BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM TOYOTA. THESE REPRESENTATIVES AGREED THAT MY SEQUOIA FRAME IS BADLY RUSTED AND FULL OF RUST HOLES, BUT ARE BLAMING THE SALT USED IN THE NORTHEAST AND NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE MATERIALS USED TO CONSTRUCT THE VEHICLE. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ON FREEWAYS OR INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS THAT REQUIRE HIGHER SPEEDS. IN ADDITION, I WAS TOLD NOT TO TOW ANYTHING BEHIND IT, BECAUSE THE STRENGTH OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE WAS COMPROMISED AND WHATEVER I WAS TOWING COULD SEPARATE FROM THE CAR. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS IS A MAJOR CONCERN REGARDING THE SAFETY FACTOR AND USE OF THE CAR. MY WIFE AND I INTENTIONALLY BOUGHT OUR SEQUOIA FOR TOWING PURPOSES AND LONG TRIPS WITH FAMILY. THEY TOOK PICTURES, MEASUREMENTS OF HOLES, AND OTHER INFO AND TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD FILE A REPORT AND GET BACK TO ME WITHIN TWO WEEKS. AFTER READING MANY STATEMENTS FROM OTHER TOYOTA SEQUOIA OWNERS, I AM NOT CONFIDENT THAT TOYOTA WILL RESOLVE THIS MAJOR ISSUE WITH THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA, AND WILL CONTINUE TO REFUSE TO RESOLVE THIS SERIOUS SITUATION TO PROTECT THE CONSUMER. THE VSC/TRAC ACTIVATION AND SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON WHILE THE SYSTEM INTERMITTENTLY ACTIVATED, LOCKING UP/LETTING GO OF THE RIGHT REAR TIRE WHILE ON DRY LEVEL PAVEMENT AND DRIVING FORWARD. I TOOK IT TO A SHOP, WHICH FOUND A PROBLEM IN A STEERING SENSOR, "THE COMPUTER" AND POSSIBLY A WHEEL SENSOR. THEY SUGGESTED THAT THE SYSTEM BE DISABLED UNTIL IT COULD BE TROUBLESHOOT IN MORE DETAIL. I HAD THEM DISABLE IT SO THAT IT COULD BE DRIVEN WITHOUT THE DANGER OF A WHEEL LOCKING UP ON THE HIGHWAY. IT IS STILL DISABLED, WITH DASH SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTS ON DURING OPERATION. *TR
ON AUGUST 13, 2011 WHILE TRAVELING ON I-75 SOUTH OF ATLANTA A VEHICLE LEFT THE ROAD & ATTEMPTED TO RETURN AND OVER CORRECTED, HE STRUCK OUR SEQUOIA WITH SUCH FORCE IN THE REAR DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER DOOR THAT THE REAR OF THE OUR SEQUOIA IMMEDIATELY TURNED SIDEWAYS AND WE BEGIN TO FLIP. AFTER FLIPPING WE LANDED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND SLID APPROX 1/4 OF A MILE BEFORE COMING TO RESTING PLACE IN THE MEDIAN ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE. MY WIFE &13 YEAR OLD SON WERE SEVERELY INJURED, MYSELF AND MY OTHER 2 SONS SUSTAINED INJURIES BUT NONE WERE LIFE THREATENING. NEITHER MY WIFE'S NOR MY SONS SEAT BELT LOCKED AND ONCE THE WINDOWS BLEW OUT MY SON WAS DRAGGED DOWN THE INTERSTATE CAUSING SEVERE INJURIES TO HIS HEAD, BACK, ARM AND LEG. MY WIFE SUSTAINED WORSE INJURIES, HER ARM 6 INCHES & 6 INCHES BELOW HER ELBOW WAS CUT OFF. NONE OF THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND NEITHER SEATBELT "FIRED" PROPERLY ALLOWING MY WIFE AND SON TO SUSTAIN LIFE ALTERING INJURIES. NO ONE DOUBTS THAT IF THE SAFETY FEATURES WE PAID ADDITIONAL $ FOR HAD FUNCTIONED PROPERLY, THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER. SOON AFTER THE ACCIDENT I CONTACTED TOYOTA TO HAVE THE INCIDENT INVESTIGATED. AN "INDEPENDENT" INVESTIGATOR READ THE VEHICLE EDR (BLACKBOX) SOON THEREAFTER I RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT TOYOTA HAD NO RESPONSIBILITY. WHEN I CALLED AND SPOKE TO THE TOYOTA REP THAT SIGNED THE LETTER, HE WAS IMMEDIATELY ON THE DEFENSIVE. HE YELLED AND TRIED USING INTIMIDATION TECHNIQUES TO GET ME TO "GO AWAY". MY WIFE IS NOW PERMANENTLY DISABLED AND UNABLE TO WORK AS AN RN. I HAVE OWNED 7 TOYOTA VEHICLES & PAID EXTRA FOR THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS, WE AS CONSUMERS HAVE BEEN DECEIVED BY TOYOTA SELLING US ON SAFETY AND RELIABILITY. I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER TOYOTA. PART# 89541-0C050. VEHICLE LIGHTS ARE OFF WHEN VEHICLE IS STARTED, AFTER 2-3 MILES ALL THE LIGHTS COME ON THEN THE CAR IS HARD TO HANDLE DUE TO TRACTION CONTROL MAKING THE CAR UNSTABABLE. I AM THE OWNER OF A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 186,000 MILES. ON JULY 19TH I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE FROM SOME MY REPAIR SHOP AFTER SOME ROUTINE MAINTENANCE (TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT). THE MECHANIC NOTED THAT '' WHEN CHECKING THE VEHICLE ON LIFT, FOUND FRONT FRAME ARCHES NEAR FEET RUSTED THROUGH AND CRACKED ALMOST A FOOT LONG ON BOTH SIDES.' I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH GRAPPONE TOYOTA IN CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE AND ON JULY 21ST THEY CONFIRMED THE DAMAGE AND REPORTED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE DAMAGE IS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE FRAME DESIGN THAT ALLOWS WATER TO COLLECT AND NOT DRAIN. MY RESEARCH SHOWS THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS FRAME AS USED ON THE SEQUOIA AND TUNDRA. IT ALSO APPARENTLY WAS A PROBLEM ON THE TACOMA WHICH HAS A SIMILAR DEFECTIVE DESIGN. I CONTACTED THE TOYOTA US CORPORATE OFFICEBY PHONE ON THE 21ST AND WAS INFORMED THAT TOYOTA DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM ON THE SEQUOIA AS REQUIRING ANY PROGRAM TO RECTIFY SUCH AS TOYOTA HAS REPORTEDLY DONE FOR THE TUNDRA AND TACOMA. GIVEN THE UNSAFE NATURE OF THE DEFECTIVE DESIGN, AND THE IMPLICATIONS SHOULD IT FAIL ON THE ROAD, I FIND THIS UNACCEPTABLE. I SUBSEQUENTLY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REPUTABLE WELDING SHOP WHO FOUND THE DAMAGE WAS MORE EXTENSIVE AND WELDED 21 INCH LONG PLATES ON BOTH FRAME ARCHES. HE CONFIRMED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY A FRAME DESIGN THAT ALLOWED WATER TO ACCUMULATE IN THE FRAME AND CORRODE THE METAL. *TR

THE VEHICLE IS A TOYOTA SEQUOIA 2002 2 WHEEL DRIVE, AND I HAVE HAD THREE INCIDENTS SO FAR. THE VEHICLES VSC SYSTEM ENGAGES WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN DRY CONDITIONS LEADING TO A MOMENTARY LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKES GRAB AND CAUSE YOUR VEHICLE TO SWERVE TO THE LEFT SIDE. THIS HAPPENS OUT OF THE BLUE WITH NO WARNING. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND OUT OF NO WHERE I STARTED SKIDDING AND MY STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHAKING. THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE ROAD, THE WEATHER WAS HOT AND DRY, AND I WASN'T SWITCHING LANES. SIMULTANEOUSLY THE "VSC TRAC" AND "TRAC OFF" LIGHTS CAME ON. MY FIRST INSTINCT WAS TO APPLY THE BRAKE, AND UPON DOING SO THE ABS KICKED IN. I PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY TO LET THE CAR REST AND SO THAT I COULD CHECK EVERYTHING OUT. EVERYTHING APPEARED FINE, SO I CONTINUED ON MY JOURNEY. THE LIGHTS STAYED ON FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE 50 MILE TRIP, BUT NO FURTHER INCIDENT OCCURRED. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR THE NEXT MORNING, THE LIGHTS WERE OFF. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME I HAD AN ECU SKID CONTROL FAILURE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I FOUND THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED AT LEAST FOUR TIMES PRIOR WITH THIS VEHICLE, STARTING WHEN THE CAR WAS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD AND HAD APPROXIMATELY 35,000 MILES. ALL FOUR TIMES THE CAR HAD BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS THEN CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED THE CONTACT A REPAIR DEAL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 253,000.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM ENGAGES SUDDENLY WITH POWER LOSS AND FRONT END VIBRATION. VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS ILLUMINATE ON DASH. ABS AND VSC LIGHTS REMAIN ON (ABS AND STABILITY CONTROL THEREFORE DISENGAGED) AND CANNOT BE TURNED BACK ON BY OPERATOR. WHEN VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF, SYSTEM APPEARS TO RESET, BUT THE PROBLEM REPEATS AFTER RESTARTING AND DRIVING SEVERAL MILES. PROBLEM OCCURRED TWICE TODAY, ON TWO SEPARATE DRIVE EVENTS WITHIN A 2 HOUR PERIOD. *TR
I HAVE EXPERIENCED CHILLING AND DANGEROUS MALFUNCTIONS OF THE ABS, VSC/TRACK SYSTEM IN MY (OWNED SINCE NEW) 2002 SEQUOIA. THE "VSC/VSC TRACK" LIGHTS ILLUMINATE AND A DISCONNECT ALARM (BEEPING TONE) IS INITIATED. THE SYSTEM FAILURE PULLS THE CAR ABRUPTLY OFF COURSE. IMMEDIATE CORRECTION MUST BE MADE TO STAY ON THE ROAD. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WITHIN THE PAST 6 MONTHS WITH THE SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY RE-SETTING ITSELF AFTER TURNING OFF THE KEY AND RE-STARTING THE ENGINE. TODAY'S INCIDENT WAS THE MOST VIOLENT AND THE SYSTEM DOES NOT RE-SET. PROBABLY A GOOD THING. LOOKING AT USER COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET CAUSES ONE TO WONDER WHY THE PUBLIC HAS NOT BEEN PROTECTED BY THE NHTSA REQUIRING A RECALL. THE REAR HATCH ON MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WILL OPEN INTERMITTENTLY. SOMETIMES IT WILL OPEN , BUT MOST OF THE TIME IT WILL NOT. WHEN IT DOES OPEN, IT WILL NOT LOCK. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE A FLAT TIRE, THERE IS NO WAY TO LOWER THE SPARE. *TR
VSC LIGHTS CAME ON AFTER HAVING THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BRAKE BOOSTER REBUILT. NOW WHEN BRAKING OCCURS THERE IS PULSATION OF THE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE PULLS TO THE RIGHT UNDER NORMAL BRAKING CONDITIONS (DRY LEVEL PAVED ROAD CONDITIONS) - THIS PULLING IS MORE SEVERE IF BRAKING OCCURS WHEN CORNERING.
