WE OWN A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE MINIVAN AND AT 75,000 MILES THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR HINGES/ROLLERS AND LATCHING MECHANISM HAVE FAILED AND THE MOTOR AND CABLE FOR THE POWER DOOR OPENING SYSTEM ALSO NEED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE DEFECTIVE HINGES/ROLLERS AND LATCHES PUT TO MUCH STRAIN ON THE MECHANISM. TOYOTA WANTS OVER $2,000 TO SERVICE THIS DOOR AND THE OTHER DOOR (PREVENTABLE MAINTENANCE). BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR IS UNUSABLE WHICH NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY RISK. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT THIS DOOR MECHANISM HAS FAILED AFTER LESS THAN 5 YEARS OF NORMAL USE. *TR
THE A/C IN MY 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA STARTED BLOWING HOT AIR OUT OF THE DRIVER SIDE VENTS. THE COMPRESSOR KEPT KICKING ON AND OFF. THIS OCCURRED EVERYTIME I USED THE A/C. AFTER REPLACING THE COMPRESSOR TWICE, WE STILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH HOT AIR COMING OUT OF THE VENT WHILE THE A/C IS ON. NOW THE VAN TODAY 4/5/2010 HAS COMPLETELY STOPPED BLOWING COLD AIR AND ONLY BLOWS HOT AIR WHEN THE A/C IS TURNED ON. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WERE TOLD THE A/C PULLEY HAS NOT BURNED UP. THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ON THIS ISSUE. TOYOTA TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN AC003-05 BUT IT ONLY COVERS VEHICLES UNTIL 36,000. SINCE THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AFTER THAT MILEAGE, WE ARE NOT COVERED. THIS IS THE THIRD MAJOR ISSUE I HAVE HAD WITH THIS 2005 VAN. I HAVE HAD THE BACK DOOR GAS SHOCKS REPLACED UNDER A RECALL AND THE ENTIRE FRONT DRIVER'S DOOR REPLACED UNDER A RECALL. THE FIX FOR THE A/C IS ESTIMATED AT $4,000! *TR
TOYOTA SIENNA SLIDING DOOR PROBLEM I COULD NOT SOMETIMES CLOSE THE SLIDING DOOR. SO I VISITED THE DEALER NEAR MY HOUSE. I HEARD THAT THE HINGE WAS ALMOST BROKEN AND NEED TO BE CHANGED. *TR
THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ON MY 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA BINDS AND LOCKS CAUSING TOUGH STEERING AND MANY NEAR MISS ACCIDENTS DUE TO DIFFICULT STEERING. REPAIR IS TO COST $800.00 DOLLARS WHICH IS RIDICULOUS FOR SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
I CAN'T OPEN MY DRIVER OR PASSENGER SLIDING DOORS ON MY 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN. IT STARTED ABOUT A YEAR AFTER I PURCHASED. THE DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER WOULD JUST OPEN WHEN IT WANTED TO DIDN'T DO NOTHING TO IT. ONE DAY IT WOULD OPEN, THE NEXT DAY IT WOULDN'T DID THIS FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS NOW IT WON'T OPEN AT ALL. THE PASSENGER REAR POWER SLIDING DOOR STARTED MAKING NOISE LIKE SOMETHING WAS STUCK IN IT. HAD IT CHECKED AT DEALER NOTHING STUCK WOULD STOP ON AND OFF FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW IT WON'T OPEN AT ALL. I HAVE 3 CHILDREN THAT HAS TO CLIMB THROUGH THE FRONT TO GET TO THE REAR. CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY THE NOTE AND GET IT FIXED. *TR
ELECTRIC DOOR CLOSER FAILED IN PARKING LOT AND WE WERE UNABLE TO GO ANYWHERE BECAUSE WE COULDN'T CLOSE DOOR. *TR
WHILE DRIVING FROM CA TO VA IN MAY OF 2009 I EXPERIENCED AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHILE IN CRUISE CONTROL. THIS OCCURRED AFTER I WOULD SLOW DOWN FOR TRAFFIC AND THEN ACTIVATE THE RESUME CONTROL. THIS HAPPENED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS DURING THE TRIP EAST AND ON THE RETURN TRIP BACK TO CA. THE SPEEDS WITH THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION REACHED 95MPH ON THE FIRST OCCASION AND STOPPED ONCE I APPLIED THE BRAKES. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT I WAS ABLE TO KEEP THE ACCELERATION FROM REACHING MORE THAN 10 TO 15 MPH OVER THE ASSIGNED CRUISE CONTROL SPEED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE VEHICLE HAS DUNLOP RUNFLAT TIRES, SIZE P225 60 R17 (NA). WHILE THE CONTACT WAS EXAMINING HER VEHICLE, SHE NOTICED A BUMP NEAR THE RIM OF THE TIRE. WHENEVER SHE WOULD DRIVE 40 MPH OR GREATER, THE VEHICLE WOULD BEGIN TO SHAKE. THE DEALER COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE TIRE MILEAGE WAS 15,000. THE VEHICLE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA DRIVER SIDE DOOR MAKES LOUD NOISE WHEN OPENING -- CABLE COVERING IS CRACKED EXPOSING WIRE TO THE ELEMENTS. CABLE MAY EVENTUALLY BREAK PREVENTING DOOR FROM OPENING. *TR
2005 TOYOTA SIENNA LE THIS VEHICLE HAS ONE ELECTRIC SLIDING DOOR, ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THIS ELECTRIC DOOR HAS FAILED, AND IS STUCK IN THE CLOSED POSITION. DEALER HAS SAID THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDS A NEW LATCH ASSEMBLY AND CABLES. WE HAVE HAD SOME TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH THIS DOOR SINCE WE PURCHASED IT, INCLUDING PRIOR INCIDENTS WHERE THE DOOR WAS INOPERABLE. THESE PREVIOUS FIXES OCCURRED WHEN THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY, WHICH IT IS NO LONGER UNDER. IN EACH CASE, THE DEALER MADE AN ADJUSTMENT TO GET THE DOOR TO WORK, BUT AT NO TIME CHANGED ANY PARTS. DEALER INFORMED ME THAT TOYOTA IS WILLING TO PROVIDE THE PARTS (LOCK ASSEMBLY 146.35 AND CONTROL 693.04) BUT THAT WE WILL NEED TO PAY LABOR OF 660. *TR
TOYOTA SIENNA 2005 OEM TIRE VALVE STEM CRACKED. *TR
LAST YEAR I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA, AND A LINE OF DUCKS WALKED OUT IN FRONT OF MY CAR. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES BUT THE CAR JUST KEPT GOING, RUNNING OVER A DUCK AND STOPPING ABOUT 30 FT LATER. I THOUGHT MAYBE I WAS TOO SLOW TO BRAKE. THEN A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER A MAN WALKED OUT FROM BEHIND A TRAILER AND I TRIED TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES (I WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT 20 MPH). THE MAN SAW ME AND HAD TIME TO GET OUT OF THE WAY THANKFULLY SINCE THE CAR DIDN'T STOP UNTIL 10 FT AFTERWARDS. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY DEALER AND THEY SAID 'THE MASTER CYLINDER IS BYPASSING' AND REPLACED IT. I DON'T HAVE THE OLD PART. HOWEVER, I WANTED TO MAKE SURE YOU KNEW ABOUT IT, BECAUSE IT WAS NOT OBVIOUS DURING NORMAL DRIVING, ONLY WHEN I HAD TO STOP QUICKLY. AND SOMEONE COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN KILLED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. WHEN THE CONTACT LIFTED THE LIFTGATE ON HER VEHICLE, IT DROPPED DOWN ON HER HEAD. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED. THE HINGES FAILED AND CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED FOR FREE SINCE IT WAS PART OF AN EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE POWER LIFTGATES, BUT NOT FOR THE MANUAL LIFTGATES. THE CONTACT FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS FAILURE AND FEELS THAT IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER BEING REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 43,000.
THE SLIDING DOORS ON THE VAN FREEZE SHUT WHEN WEATHER IS COLD AND NOW ONE OF THEM CAN NOT BE OPENED EVEN IN WARM WEATHER. IT APPEARS THAT THE LOCK ON THE SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT DISENGAGE. THE SECOND DOOR IS STARTING TO FAIL AS WELL. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT HAS NOT BEEN A PROBLEM WITH OTHER SIENNA VEHICLES BUT THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINT OF IT ON THE WEB. TOYOTA COULD NOT OPEN IT EITHER AND SUGGESTED I PAY $875.00 TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT REMOVE CHILDREN FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR WITHOUT THEM CLIMBING TO ANOTHER DOOR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR WAS NOT OPENING AND CLOSING ON ITS OWN. SHE MUST OPEN AND CLOSE IT MANUALLY. THE CONTACT WILL NOT TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION BECAUSE IT WOULD COST OVER $1,200 TO REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WILL BE NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.
DASH COVER CRACKED AND I'M WORRIED THAT THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY PROPERLY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SIDE SLIDING DOORS COULD NOT BE OPENED WITH THE AUTOMATIC KEY-LESS REMOTE AND COULD ONLY BE OPENED MANUALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE A FAILURE WITH THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 300,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 376,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
DRIVER'S SEAT LOOSE. I FOUND A BOLT (A SHOULDER BOLT) ON THE FLOOR OF OUR 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 48,000 MILES ON IT AT THAT TIME. THE SEAT IS LOOSE AND WHEN THE POSITION IS CHANGED, FORWARD OR BACK, THERE IS A GRINDING NOISE LIKE THE GEARS (IT IS ELECTRIC SEAT) ARE NOT MESHING. MY CONCERN IS IF I AM IN AN ACCIDENT THE SEAT WILL COME LOOSE (AS IT MOVERS AROUND NOW) AND I WILL TAKE THE FORCE OF THE SEAT AS WELL AS MY BODY IF IT COMES LOOSE. THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE SEAT WILL CHANGE POSITION IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENT AND I WILL NOT BE RESTRAINED BY THE SEATBELTS PROPERLY BECAUSE THE SEAT SHIFTED MY POSITION AND IN ADDITION I WILL NOT GET THE FULL EFFECT OF THE AIR BAGS AND AIR CURTAINS WHEN THEY DEPLOY. WHEN I FOUND THE BOLT I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAD NEVER MENTIONED WARRANTY THE SERVICE WRITER BROUGHT IT UP.. I SPOKE WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AFTER THE DEALERSHIP SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND TOYOTA SAID THE SAME THING. THEY SUGGESTED I BUY A $125 REPAIR MANUAL IF I WANTED TO FIX IT MYSELF. I ASKED IF THEY WOULD SEND ME A COPY OF THE PAGE THAT PERTAINS TO THE SEAT AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD TRY. (I WAS SUBSEQUENTLY TOLD BY ANOTHER PERSON IN TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT THE PERSON WROTE THAT I HAD REFUSED TO BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL. APPARENTLY HE JUST SAID HE WOULD LOOK FOR THE PAGES AND E-MAIL THEM TO ME TO GET ME OFF THE LINE. HIS NOTE CERTAINLY INDICATES HE HAD NO INTENTION OF HELPING ME GET COPIES OF THE PAGES FROM THE REPAIR MANUAL. ) IT IS OBVIOUS THERE IS EITHER A DESIGN ISSUE OR FLAW OR THE SHOULDER BOLT WAS NOT ASSEMBLED OR TORQUED PROPERLY. BOLTS DO NOT SIMPLY FALL OUT OF THEIR OWN ACCORD. IF THIS WERE NOT AN IMPORTANT BOLT TOYOTA WOULD CERTAINLY NOT HAVE GONE TO THE EXPENSE OF INSTALLING A HARDENED SHOULDER BOLT AS OPPOSED TO A REGULAR BOLT THAT IS MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE. *TR
POWER SLIDING DOOR FAILED IN MY 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. THIS IS A MANUFACTURER'S SAFTY-RELATED DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE FIXED AT TOYOTA'S COST. *TR
OUR PASSENGER-SIDE SLIDING REAR DOOR HAS FROZEN IN PLACE AND WILL NOT OPEN. IT IS A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA C MODEL. WE HAVE HAD OTHER ISSUES AS WELL, SUCH AS THE REAR HATCHBACK SUPPORTS FAILED WITHIN 3 YEARS, OUR DRIVERS-SIDE FRONT DOOR MAKES A POPPING SOUND WHEN OPENED, WE HAVE REPLACED THE FRONT BRAKES THREE TIMES WITHIN 65,000 MILES, AND SEAT BELTS THAT CONSTANTLY STICK. *TR
2009: ONE INCIDENT SEVERAL MONTHS TO A YEAR AGO IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN THAT MY CAR ACCELERATED. IT FELT LIKE MY CAR HAD INCREASED BY A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT IN MPH. I THOUGHT I PRESSED THE GAS. I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATED A BIT BUT THE CAR APPEARED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. I BELIEVE I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE AT SOME POINT BUT IT DID NOT CHANGE THE ACCELERATION. I CAN'T SAY IF I PUT ON BRAKES FIRST TO SLOW MYSELF DOWN OR ACCELERATED. HOWEVER, I DO KNOW NEITHER ONE AFFECTED THE CAR FROM THE ACCELERATION. THE ACCELERATION STOPPED ON ITS OWN. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY OTHER INCIDENT BUT I AM ACUTELY CAUTIOUS WHEN DRIVING BECAUSE THAT INCIDENT DID SEEM UNUSUAL AND WORRISOME AT THE TIME. I DID NOT REPORT B/C I PLACED IT AS ISOLATED. I , HOWEVER, WANT TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AND MY FAMILY. I AM SURE OF THIS EXPERIENCE AS AN OCCURRENCE THAT SHOULD BE REPORTED. *TR
FOR 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA FACING PROBLEM WITH RIGHT SIDE POWER SLIDING DOOR. WENT TO DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE CABLES WHICH ACTUATE DOOR MOVEMENT ARE BINDING AND STRIKING OUT OF TRACTS. NEW MOTOR/CABLE ASSEMBLY IS REQUIRED TO REPAIR THE DOOR. THE TOTAL COST FOR DOOR REPLACEMENT IS AROUND $1700 + LABOR. IT SEEMS THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH 2004/2005 TOYOTA SIENNAS AND TOYOTA HAS NOT ACKNOWLEDGED THIS TO BE AN ISSUE. A LOT OF SIENNA OWNERS HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA IN THE PAST AND THE RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA HAS BEEN DIFFERENT WITH EACH PERSON. CAN THIS ISSUE BE TAKEN WITH TOYOTA MOTOR SO THAT A RECALL IS ISSUED AND TOYOTA ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY FOR FLAWED DESIGN. *TR
PROBLEM WITH POWER STEERING SHAFT. ONE OF THE UNIVERSAL JOINTS ON THE "SEALED" SHAFT RUSTED ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE PROPER STEERING. THIS WAS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE! IT MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. IT WAS VERY EXPENSIVE TO FIX. *TR
2005 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN - SLIDING DOOR FAILURE (DRIVER'S SIDE). DEALER SAYS IT IS A BROKEN MOTOR & CABLES. VEHICLE HAS ONLY 41,000 MILES ON IT (WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 36,000). DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME $2,000. SEARCHING THE INTERNET I FOUND HUNDREDS OF POSTS FROM PEOPLE WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT AND SHOULD RECALL AS THEY DID WITH BOTH THE REAR HATCH STRUTS AND BOTH FRONT DOOR HINGES. I JUST HAD MY VEHICLE IN THE SHOP LAST MONTH FOR BOTH OF THESE FIXES. *TR
TL*-THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THE CONTACT OBSERVED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR WOULD NOT FUNCTION UNLESS OPERATED MANUALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED UNDER THE SERVICE WARRANTY WITHOUT AN INVOLVEMENT OF A CRASH. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
2005 TOYOTA SIENNA CE, MANUAL REAR LIFT GATE STRUTS HAVE FAILED, WILL NO LONGER HOLD THE LIFT GATE OPEN. TOYOTA SENT OUT A NOTICE FOR POWER LIFT GATES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I TOOK THIS COMPLAINT TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE NOTICE, I THEN PROCEEDED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE TO TOYOTA CORPORATION AND THEY HAVE DECLINED MY REQUEST TO REPLACE A PART THAT IS DEFECTIVE ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP. I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED AT THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE TO SPEND MORE MONEY TO BUY A MORE EXPENSIVE VERSION OF THIS VEHICLE TO GET TAKEN CARE OF. WE ARE FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT RESULT IN ANY INJURIES, AS THIS DOOR ALMOST FELL ON MY 3 YEAR OLD CHILD WHILE I WAS HOLDING IT UP AND HE WAS HELPING ME REMOVE SOME STUFF FROM THE BACK. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHTS ILLUMINATED, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE, AND MOVE TO THE LEFT WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. WHENEVER DRIVING OVER A BUMP OR A POT HOLE, THE BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE RECALL NOTICE MUST BE PRESENTED FOR RECALL REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. THE CONTACT WAS UNCERTAIN OF THE REMEDY FOR THE RECALL DEFECT, AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD POSSIBLY NEED AN ALIGNMENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 33, 000.
REPLACED COMPLETE STEERING MECHANISM - SHAFT AND GEAR AFTER MAKING SOME NOISE. THE STEERING WILL LOCK OR HARD TO TURN DURING DRIVING. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 5-6 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE RAN A STOP SIGN AND STRUCK THE LEFT REAR DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. HER VEHICLE FISH-TAILED AND TURNED TO THE LEFT. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AND STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE CONTACT HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE STRUCK A CURB, A BOULDER, AND THEN A PALM TREE BEFORE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE BRAKES FAILED TO OPERATE DURING THE INCIDENT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A GMC DEALER AND THEY TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE, BUT WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE IS STILL AT THE GMC DEALER AND WILL BE APPRAISED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
2005 TOYOTA SIENNA, DRIVER SIDE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR JAMMED. THE DRIVE CABLE FOR DOOR JAMMED SO MY WIFE WAS UNABLE ABLE TO MANUALLY OR ELECTRICALLY OPEN THE DOOR TO GET MY TODDLERS OUT OF THE VAN. 5 YEARS AGO, WE NEEDED A MINI VAN AND SHOPPED TOYOTA, HONDA, AND MITSUBISHI. AFTER SOME RESEARCH, WE CHOSE A NEW TOYOTA SIENNA FOR IT'S VALUE, IT'S RELIABILITY, AND IT'S STRONG RATING FROM CONSUMER REPORTS. I HAVE, IN THE PAST, DRIVEN ONE TOYOTA TO ALMOST 200,000 MILES WITH LITTLE REPAIR, JUST REGULAR MAINTENANCE! WHEN THE SIENNA WAS ABOUT 39 MONTHS OLD, WE BEGAN TO HAVE SOME STEERING ISSUES. OCCASIONALLY, IT WOULD BE "STIFF" TO STEER. IT WAS STILL DRIVABLE AND AFTER TAKING IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC, WE WERE CONVINCED WE NEEDED NEW TIRES, SO PURCHASED 4 NEW TIRES. THE STEERING ISSUE CONTINUED, HOWEVER, AND BECAME WORSE AND WORSE. WE WERE PERPLEXED BECAUSE THE SIENNA WAS A NEW CAR PURCHASE, GARAGED YEAR ROUND, AND WAS A TOYOTA. WHEN WE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT THE SPARE TIRE RECALL, WE TOOK THE SIENNA TO HALEY'S AUTOMALL IN FARMVILLE, VA FOR REPAIR AND ASKED THEM TO ALSO REPLACE THE TAILGATE STRUTS AND INVESTIGATE OUR STEERING ISSUE. THE MECHANIC THERE REPLACED THE TAILGATE STRUTS, TOLD US IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY, THEN REMOVED THE SPARE TIRE FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE SINCE TOYOTA ADMITTED "THE CORROSION RESISTANCE OF THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER CABLE IS INSUFFICIENT WHEN VEHICLES ARE OPERATED IN AREAS WHERE A LARGE AMOUNT OF ROAD SALT IS APPLIED. IN THE WORST CASE, THE CARRIER CABLE MAY FAIL AND THE SPARE TIRE COULD BECOME SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE, A ROAD HAZARD FOR FOLLOWING VEHICLES. ". HE PUT THE TIRE IN THE BACK OF THE MINI VAN, AND THEN TOLD US OUR U-JOINT WAS CORRODED IN OUR STEERING SHAFT FROM THE STEERING COLUMN TO THE STEERING RACK. THE COST FOR REPAIR WAS QUOTED AT $1169.00. SINCE THE RECALL ADMITTEDLY INVOLVED "INSUFFICIENT CORROSION RESISTANCE", WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT ALSO HAPPENED TO OUR U-JOINT, CAUSING FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE STEERING COLUMN AND RACK, WE WERE CERTAIN TOYOTA WOULD ALSO COVER THIS REPAIR, AS CLEARLY A NEW VEHICLE SHOULD NOT HAVE CORROSION OF THIS MAGNITUDE AFTER ONLY 3 YEARS OF USE! *TR
MY 2005 TOYOTA SIENNA LIFTGATE STRUTS FAILED ON 2-27-2009 WHEN THE OPEN DOOR COLLAPSED WITHOUT BEING SUPPORTED AS IT NORMALLY WOULD BY THE STRUTS. MY WIFE STILL HAD HER HANDS UNDER THE DOOR AND WAS ABLE TO CATCH IT TO PREVENT IT FROM FALLING ONTO MY SON WHO WAS UNDER THE DOOR. THIS IS A MANUALLY OPERATED DOOR, NOT A POWER OPERATED DOOR, AND THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAYS IT IS NOT COVERED BY THE PREVIOUS RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN ON A FOUR YEAR OLD CAR, AND IS STILL A SAFETY ISSUE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD REPAIR. WHY IS THIS FAILURE COVERED UNDER A RECALL FOR A POWERED DOOR BUT NOT FOR A MANUALLY OPERATED ONE? THIS DOOR CAN FREEFALL ALL THE WAY DOWN, SO IS POTENTIALLY MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE POWERED ONE DUE TO THE SPEED WITH WHICH IT CAN FALL, IN MY OPINION. AS A RESULT OF THE FAILURE TO INCLUDE ALL STRUTS IN THS RECALL, I WILL NOW BE FORCED TO CARRY A 2X4 TO PROP OPEN THE LIFTGATE WHILE WAITING FOR A NEW RECALL TO BE ISSUED BEFORE I CAN GET IT FIXED. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED ALONG WITH THE OTHER FAULTY DOORS, AND IT APPEARS THAT SOMEONE OR SOME ORGANIZATION(S) DECIDED THAT ECONOMICS WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAT CONSUMER SAFETY. WATER WAS POURED TO REPLACE MISSING COOLANT ALLOWING OWNER TO GET HOME. BROUGHT TO TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER THE NEXT DAY. OWNER OPTED FOR A NON-TOYOTA REPLACEMENT RADIATOR (OWNER WAS TOLD THE OLD RADIATOR WAS BEYOND REPAIR) SINCE A TOYOTA PART WOULD HAVE TAKEN DAYS TO PROCURE. TWO SUCH REPLACEMENTS WERE ATTEMPTED TO BE INSTALLED. NEITHER ONE FIT. NOT ONLY WAS A TOYOTA RADIATOR UNAVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY, IT COST $200 MORE. OWNER HAD TO BE WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION FOR AT LEAST 4 DAYS AT HIS EXPENSE (A RENTAL). EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 100,000 MILES; INCIDENT HAPPENED AT 104,000 MILES. *TR

THE CONTACT IS OVER BY 1,500 MILES ON HER EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,400.

IN THREE YEARS I OWN THIS MODEL, I HAD TO JUMP CHARGE MY BATTERY AT LEAST 10 TIMES IN DIFFERENT OCCASIONS DUE TO ABOVE. 2) AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT FEATURE DOES NOT TURN OFF THE HEADLIGHT WHEN ENGINE IS TURNED OFF, DRAINING BATTERY. 3) DRIVER SIDE REAR SLIDING DOOR DOES NOT OPEN SOMETIMES USING REMOTE KEY, INSIDE CONTROL, OR OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE 4) BOTH SIDE REAR SLIDING DOORS SOMETIMES DO NOT OPEN ALL THE WAY USING THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE 5) BOTH SIDE REAR SLIDING DOORS WOULD NOT OPEN WHEN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING. *TR

AFTER THE CAR IS USED FOR A WHILE THE DOORS START WORKING AGAIN. I AM AFRAID MY PASSENGERS WILL GET LOCKED IN THE BACK AND THAT I WILL BE UNABLE TO GET THEM OUT OF THE CAR.
