When getting on the gas from a complete stop the engine hesitates to get going. I use sport mode and it helps lessen the effects.
Engine hesitation. When I go to accelerate there is a noticeable lag/hesitation before power is applied
Consistent hesitation with throttle application, usually from a standstill.
Hesitation when pulling out from a stop. Enough of an unplanned delay that it’s dangerous from cross-traffic at an intersection. Complained to dealer and they “updated” the computer and it still happens.
Multiple times a day, when I push on the accelerator there is a delay. I’ve almost been hit a couple of times.
My vehicle experiences throttle lag/hesitation from a stop or rolling start. The issue is intermittent and the delay can vary on how long untill the vehicle goes.
First I had my engine replaced in May 2025 under the recall and service advisor informed me it would be about 3 days before they completed the engine swap and it had to sit to make sure there were no leaks anywhere and in less than 24 hrs the called me and told me my truck was all done. I went to pick my truck up they had it waiting in the service line with the engine running, I heard a strange ticking noise coming from under my hood that sounded like a lawnmower engine, the service tech tells me that is normal with the replacement engines which is absolutely false. Being a woman they tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. I got frustrated and got in my truck and when I came to the first stoplight when the light turned green and I stepped on the gas pedal, my truck would not move, after about 5 seconds it surged forward and then again wouldn't move, then again my truck surged forward with a loud thud in the rear like somebody hit me from behind. It feels like it isn't kicking into gear and also my steering wheel was not centered when they swapped the engine so I have to hold my steering off to one side for my truck to drive straight. This has been a nightmare for me and Toyota refuses to acknowledge there is anything wrong. I've also been waiting for 7 months to get my front brakes fixed under the TSB and all they say is we don't have parts available, meanwhile they're building new trucks with new brake pads, rotors and calipers before taking care of the people waiting months and months? They try and wait until your warranty runs out so I have to pay for the fix. Please help. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Delay acceleration hesitation
Vehicle has lag when accelerating from a stop as well as when in motion.
The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 70 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the messages “Low Power Mode” and “See Dealer” were displayed on the instrument cluster before the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle and had the vehicle towed to a local dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine control software had failed and reinstalled a "Mechanic" software solution. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V381000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was repaired; however, the contact was advised by the dealer that the engine recall would be completed in phases, and the VIN was not part of the current phase of repairs. The manufacturer was informed of the failure, and the agent informed the contact that the recall would run through 2029, or if the vehicle exceeded 100,000 miles, the recall repair would not be performed. The failure mileage was 82,170.
My engine was replaced under the recall at 75,000 miles. One day and less than 100 miles later, the engine lost motive power on the upgrade side of an overpass on the highway at 75 MPH. The vehicle slowed so quickly that if other vehicles would have been near, it undoubtedly would have caused an accident. I had it towed to the shop and they are investigating the problem. I also called Toyota Corporate HQ and notified them about the problem.
Hesitation at acceleration. Especially from start
The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Tundra. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V381000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); however, the parts to do the recall repair were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact stated while driving at 60 MPH, the vehicle started to lose motive power. The reduced power and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The contact merged to the side of the road and the vehicle kept losing power. The contact attempted to allow the vehicle cool down; however, the contact was not able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Tire size 265/60R20. All tires have cracked around the bead of the rim. This was discovered at 24,663 miles during regularly scheduled maintenance at Copeland Toyota in Brockton, MA on March 20, 2025. Defective manufacturing suspected. Upon further investigation of this tire model on the Internet, I discovered dozens of reports of the same sidewall failure by Toyota Tundra owners with very low mileage. I contacted Bridgestone Support on March 20, and per their instruction, took the vehicle to a Bridgestone authorized dealer (Firestone Complete Auto Care, Warren Ave. Brockton, MA) on March 21. The inspection determined that the tires have failed. The technician indicated that Bridgestone has very limited inventory of this tire model, indicative that the tire is being discontinued. I contacted Bridgestone Support on March 21, indicating that there is likely a manufacturing defect, and was advised to report this to the NHTSA, because the Bridgestone employee stated that they have no internal capability to report a potential manufacturing defect. I suspect there is a likelihood that these tires have been discontinued because of defects, but Bridgestone has not alerted customers of such a safety hazard. My Bridgestone Support reference number is [XXX]. Please investigate this as I believe there is a safety hazard due manufacturer defect. When I step on the accelerator the engine will sometimes have a very long lag which has almost caused me to get in a wreck when crossing traffic.
Hesitation when trying to accelerate after slowing down or coming to a stop.
What component failed and is it available for inspection? The front driver-side roof seam on my 2022 Toyota Tundra developed corrosion under the paint and eventually opened enough for rainwater to enter the cabin. Water drips directly into the A-pillar area onto the side curtain airbag wiring, squib connector, and padded harness. It also reaches the dashboard and electrical buttons near the steering wheel during rain. The roof seam, A-pillar wiring, interior rust staining, and all affected components remain available for inspection. How was safety put at risk? The A-pillar contains the SRS curtain airbag system, its wiring, and connectors that should never be exposed to moisture. Continuous water intrusion over many months can cause corrosion, increased resistance, short circuits, or damage to the airbag inflator/squib circuit, which may lead to unintended deployment or failure to deploy in a crash. Water reaching the dashboard controls and electrical switches could cause intermittent electrical faults or malfunction of driver controls. These issues present a significant safety risk because the vehicle’s airbag and electrical systems may not function as designed. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed? Yes. The Toyota dealer has repeatedly observed the active leak, interior rust streaks, and bubbling/corrosion along the roof seam. The water intrusion occurs every time it rains. Has the vehicle been inspected? Yes. Toyota has inspected the truck multiple times, including by a Field Technical Specialist. However, Toyota has been unable to provide complete documentation or photos from the FTS inspection, and the underlying safety issue remains unresolved. No inspections have been done by police or insurance. Warning lamps or messages? No warning lamps appeared. The first symptom was water leaking into the cabin around March 2024, followed by rust streaking inside the A-pillar and exterior bubbling. The issue continues during rainfall.
Acceleration hesitation and lag especially in 1st gear.
Vehicle hesitates when pressing the accelerator, especially when pulling off after a complete stop. This doesn't happen 100% of the time. From my experience, this happens 65-70% of the time with varying degrees of hesitancy. It's a safety issue as you never know when this is going to happen and to what degree; especially when crossing traffic lanes at an uncontrolled street crossing. I have spun out of my gravel driveway many times due to the hesitation.
Hesitattaion/dead pedal when accelerating from a stop. Happens often off and on
Major throttle response issues. Long delay when pressing accelerator, and when under heavy acceleration, if you let off the gas because of an obstacle, the truck continues to apply propulsion. Both issues could create an unsafe situation or cause a collision
Have constant hesitation when accelerating, especially at higher speeds. Only thing that has fixed it is when dealer resets computer, after a week issues comes back. Happens also when at a stop and try to accelerate rapidity.
Vehicle began with a knocking noise which occurred for approximately 3 days. Before being able to get an appointment at the dealer the vehicle shut off and would not move with our family in it in a lane of traffic. The vehicle has since been towed to Toyota and no clear guidance on the resolution of the engine seizing up has been shared.
There is a significant lag on acceleration when coming to a slow stop. Best way to describe it...California rolling to a stop sign and when you want to go, it delays and then suddenly goes. And if you’re in any traffic heavy environment, it always seems to lag you harder than expected, then suddenly surges. It seems to always surprise you even though you’ve been experiencing it so many times already. I’ve found driving other vehicles gets me into trouble now, too. My daily driver is this Tundra, and I try to consciously adjust for the lag. When I get into any other vehicle it responds appropriately and, well, my expected lag isn’t there and I accelerate faster than usual and has also almost caused a collision, such as turning left into traffic, trying to time it just right between oncoming vehicles.
Truck will hesitate to respond to throttle pedal input when attempting to accelerate from a stop. This has occurred numerous times over the 3 years I’ve owned it and appears to happen randomly. This 1-2 second delay puts driver safety and other drivers at risk due to inability to quickly enter or cross lanes of traffic.
The engine hesitated going up a hill by my house. I’ve gone up the hill many times in this truck and other cars and never had the problem. I turned it off and started it again but I do t know if I should keep driving. The dealer says I can’t get the recall done yet.
When pulling out onto roadway after stopping there is a hesitation for a few seconds and the vehicle hesitates which is very dangerous and could cause an accident.
After Toyota replaced the engine on my 2022 Tundra under recall, the truck developed serious issues that were not present before. The engine and powertrain system now knock, shake, stutter, and in multiple instances, the vehicle has shut off completely—including while driving and while stopped at intersections. These failures pose a significant safety risk to myself and others. Sudden loss of power in traffic or while braking has created close calls, especially when other vehicles are nearby. I no longer feel safe driving it. I have taken the truck to the Toyota dealership six times. They claim they cannot replicate the problem, but the symptoms return every time shortly after I leave. So far, the problem has not been confirmed by the dealer or any third party, but the issue is persistent and serious. The truck has only been inspected by the Toyota dealership. No inspections have been done by police, insurance, or other agencies. There are no warning lights or dashboard messages before or during these events. The symptoms began shortly after the engine was replaced and continue today. The vehicle is available for inspection if needed. Toyota has not resolved the issue, and I am concerned other owners who had the same recall engine replacement may be experiencing similar problems. I’m filing this to report a potential safety defect and ask NHTSA to investigate.
Engine locked up on the highway at 70mph. It’s Known issue but as it’s a hybrid they said no recall. It makes no sense as I lost power and if I was passing a semi or on a hill I would have been in trouble and risked causing an accident. I was lucky to be on a downhill and near a ramp. The hybrids need to be recalled and this problem creates a real risk.
The fuel gauge sometimes does not read properly. It's happened a few times where the gauge reads inaccurate.
I received a recall notice for my 22 tundra for the engine replacement. I scheduled the service and the dealers wanted to charge me doing the engine swap. They stated that due to me having a lift kit (which I had years prior to this recall) that they couldn’t do the engine swap without removing the radiator and other front end pieces or removing the body from the frame which they stated would cost me thousands of dollars. I’m trying to understand why would I have to pay for a mishap on Toyota ‘s part with the engine recall remedy that came about 3 years after my truck and me getting a lift kit installed. Why should I have to pay thousands of dollars for something that I was unaware would need to be done years later after purchasing.
This is a safety engine recall identified by the manufacturer. I have taken the truck to the dealer for remediation. At this point they do not have a date for correction.
Hesitation when I press the accelerator almost causing several accidents as I get stalled in the middle of an intersection. This has happened approximately five times in the last several months. A very scary situation. Very dangerous several times almost was T-boned
Throttle response is delayed intermittently. When proceeding from a stop or slow speed the truck will randomly have delayed acceleration. Then all of the sudden begins to accelerate with greater power and breaks the rear wheels free.
The vehicle's accelerator consistently fails to respond when entering traffic from a stop or a rolling stop. Toyota attempted to remedy the problem with a TSB, but the problem returned within a week.
Occasionally when accelerator is pressed at a stop sign or light there is hesitation before the engine rpms increase. Also happens frequently going up my steep driveway at under 5mph, at half to 3/4 up my 100 yard driveway it will just almost stall out to an idle for a few seconds then will continue on as nothing happened
Lack of throttle/ engine response while accelerating from a stop. Trying to pull put onto the highway and the truck just hesitates and doesn't want to go. Has almost gotten me got a few times from the lack of response time from the pedal to the Engine. TSB did not fix the problem
Occasionally (more frequently when cold) the vehicle does not accelerate from a stop or rolling stop. You depress the accelerator pedal and nothing happens, the vehicle does not accelerate. After a few seconds the vehicle will sometimes catch and rapidly accelerate and other times you have to release the pedal and depress the pedal again.
When accelerating from a stop, occasionally my truck has a delay in acceleration. Typically worse when cold and consistantly reproducable within 5 minutes of cold start. My concern is primarily when turning into traffic on cold mornings. Earlier this week the delay seemed to be 2 or 3 seconds and I had to make a split-second decision to not pull out when previously I had plenty of space to get across the intersection. I have been experiencing this since I purchased the vehicle with ~24k miles on the odometer (currently more than 50k). The vehicle was brought to the dealership for inspection on this issue 2 times while under warranty. Dealer states they were unable to reproduce, but asked I leave the vehicle with them for an extended period of time (several days) for diagnosis, but without the option for a loaner car to cover my travels. I declined because it was my only vehicle at the time.
The vehicle has a delay in the throttle in some situations immediately following a deceleration. For example, when braking onto a yielding on ramp to check for traffic while coming to a near stop then pressing the throttle there is an obvious lag. That second or so of lag often results in the tires spinning due to a spike in throttle. In more than one instance I've experienced it from a dead stop but this is not as common as a slow deceleration to a roll.
Hesitation upon acceleration causing dangerous situations and have almost been in an accident 3 times.
I knew this was coming but I'm stunned by this notice and that NHTSA lets Toyota get away with this. Note the bolded warning in the attached notice. Sounds pretty serious and potentially catastrophic. I called the dealer on January 4th. I'm the third one to call into this dealership for this recall. They have no ETA on the replacement engine. So, I guess I should just continue to drive the truck and hope the engine doesn't seize while I'm going down the freeway? Wouldn't it make sense for NHTSA to direct Toyota to provide "us" with a loaner until the vehicle is repaired? Toyota and NHTSA may incur huge liability costs even if only one truck crashes because of this serious failure in workmanship. Every time I use the truck my "safety or the safety of others is put at risk." No kicking the can down the road NHTSA! Toyota screwed up BIG TIME! NHTSA needs to step up and protect consumers before something happens (again?).
There is a hesitation when applying a gas pedal after a stop or rolling stop. This is a safety issue when trying to merge into traffic as the small delay in acceleration can cause an accident. The dealer stated that this is normal operation for the vehicle.
Delayed acceleration. Pulling into roadway and vehicle hesitant to go when gas pedal pressed. Unsafe condition
My name is [XXX] . Phone number [XXX] My mail [XXX] My 2022 Toyota tundra [XXX] )won’t run likely due to the engine recall (24TA07). I hear knocking. and it stalled completely. It’s been undrivable since [XXX] .The dealer says parts aren’t available yet ,and im stuck without not drive to that truck .I think it’s matching debris issue from recall causing bearing failure. It happened while driving on the highway it stop running reduce power .it’s left me stranded with no truck and it’s safety risk because it stop while driving. i can’t wait month . I want Toyota to fix it early ,tow it now ..please share this with Toyota so they contacted me directly INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
2022 Tundra, especially when the engine is cold, has issues accelerating well beyond what would be expected with "Turbo lag". On several occasions when entering a roundabout from a dead stop, the engine does not have any responsiveness at all (extends for several seconds), requiring the driver to release and re-engage the pedal. This creates a safety issue. The date reported on 12/30/24 is the most recent instance, but happens routinely.
See attached document for complaint.
Driving down the Highway at about 75-80 MPH and my Passenger side mirror camera flys off lost to the highway.
The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving on the highway at 70 MPH, the automotive power was reduced and a "Power failure get to nearest dealer" warning message illuminated. The contact was able to pull over onto the side of the road, idled, and then attempted to restart. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired as of yet. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact mentioned that the failure had occurred on three separate occasions. The approximate failure mileage was 19,800.
Vehicle has experienced several times a severe hesitation from both complete stop and rolling stop. Seems as though it is stalling. Then will accelerate.
