NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2024 Toyota Tundra. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Throttle hesitation when leaving from a stop. Completely random and occurs maybe a few times a month.
My 2024 Tundra has a throttle delay at times. When you go to accelerate quickly there is a second where the throttle cuts out and the truck stalls. This has almost caused me to get in multiple accidents.
Intermittent throttle response issues or engine lag. When coming from a complete stop, the truck will sometimes move slightly once the throttle is applied, then lose all engine power momentarily before beginning to move again. This is a recurring issue.
At a stop, there is a delay when accelerating. It almost feels like it is "thinking" before it starts to go. There are no warning lamps. It is unsafe when pulling out of highway because of the uncertainty of when the vehicle feels like its going to go. Some call it turbolag but it feels more than that.
My 2024 Toyota Tundra Platinum Non/Hybrid regularly stalls when trying to accelerate from a stop. This happens every day. When accelerating from a stop, the truck takes several seconds to move the truck to the point of almost being hit by oncoming traffic that I should have plenty of time to turn in front of. This is a very common problem among the Toyota Tundra community. I’ve brought this up to my dealer several times. They document it and call it normal operation.
When I am coming to a stop , but not a complete stop ( such as at a yield sign) the vehicle hesitates when I hit the throttle. It takes a second for the truck to engage. This is very dangerous. I believe that this could potentially cause a collision due to the vehicle not beginning motion when the throttle is pushed.
Vehicle consistently exhibits throttle lag from a stop. It is almost like the engine is not responding to the throttle input. This condition is unsafe when pulling into oncoming traffic as the vehicle does not accelerate and then lurches out into traffic as it finally responds to the throttle input
I am experiencing an ongoing issue since the truck was new: the engine hesitates upon acceleration at any speed. When stopped this lag in throttle response makes it difficult to navigate in heavy or unpredictable traffic as the vehicle does not response to the pedal instantly and making intentional sudden speed changes is all but impossible to do safely. Depressing the pedal heavy to try and hasten the response makes the truck surge into hard and fast acceleration, worsening the issue. I have discussed this with the dealer and they said this is “normal” for this truck, and I have heard the same from numerous other 3rd generation Tundra owners. This is a safety issue because I don’t have adequate control of the vehicle’s dynamics as the computer is overriding my control of the acceleration, presumably to improve fuel economy. Ultimately this seems to be an intentional design decision by Toyota and puts me and my passengers at risk.
When starting from a very slight rolling stop I sometimes get no throttle response at all. When this happens i end up applying more throttle and I still do not move. Then after a second or two the truck takes off like a rocket. This usually happens at an intersection with the steering wheel turned one way or the other. Not sure if this is an engine or transmission issue or both.
The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving in inclement weather, the rearview camera became inoperable, and moisture was visible in the displayed image. The contact also stated that while driving at 50 MPH, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle did not need to be restarted. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 25V322000 (Exterior Lighting) and 25V767000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the parts to perform the recall repairs were not yet available. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
Several situations where the throttle hesitates when entering traffic or trying to come to interstate speeds on merge ramps. 1-2 sec delay has caused potential close calls while merging, when plenty of room existed to merge at speed.
I periodically have throttle lag issues when starting to roll and take off from a stop - a lot of times this is in the middle of an intersection or pulling out into traffic lanes. The throttle almost doesn't respond or drops and then a few moments later takes off trying to make up for the throttle lag.
Vehicle hesitates to accelerate from stop or slow roll when pedal is engaged. This hesitation nearly caused a collision when attempting a left-hand turn in heavy traffic. Problem can be reproduced easily and is exacerbated when on an incline. It has not been confirmed by dealer or service center. Occurs regardless of whether auto start/stop feature is enabled or not. Putting transmission in "S" mode and manually down shifting to first gear appears to prevent the issue. After the hesitation, when the vehicle begins to accelerate, it performs a "hard" acceleration, like the pedal was slammed to the floor, even though consistent pressure was maintained on the the pedal. Problem has existed since purchasing the vehicle new in Dec. 2023.
Vehicle periodically fails to accelerate from a stop. Causing a 2-3 second delay in throttle response. This has been happening since new.
There is acceleration lag with my truck. Primarily happens when pulling into traffic which dangerously slows the vehicle down in traffic.
Vehicle lost power and wouldn’t speed up while I was on the freeway and nearly caused a wreck because I couldn’t get the vehicle up to the speed limit. I pulled over and after shutting the vehicle off for an extended amount of time I then restated my truck but still experienced a lag in the engine. I would press the gas pedal and it took a while for the engine to seemingly engage and take off. The dealer was notified and they stated “we know of the issue but there is no fix, no need to bring it in as we are aware of the issues”
I was at a stop sign making a left turn across four lanes of travel. I had a gap in traffic with ample time to make the left turn so I pressed on the gas pedal to begin the turn. The vehicle did not move forward upon me pressing the gas pedal. After about one second the vehicle finally moved. At that point cross traffic was closing in so I pressed the gas pedal to the floor. The vehicle lurched forward and the rear end broke loose causing me to fishtail the vehicle while making the turn. This delay in acceleration put me and my family at risk of being struck by oncoming traffic. The delay in acceleration caused me to mismanage the throttle sending the vehicle into an out of control turn which could have resulted in a crash had I not been able to regain control. I presented this information to the dealership mechanic and they told me that’s just how the gas pedals work in the tundra. That is not an acceptable answer. I paid too much for this vehicle for it to not be safe to drive.
On Sunday November 30th, I was driving my 2024 Tundra with 30k miles on highway AZ-260 on my way back home to Phoenix. The stretch between Forest Lakes and Payson has an altitude drop of 2500 feet with many areas having a 7% drop. During this drive, my engine shut down with no warning while I was going 65 MPH on a mountain highway with a 7% decline in altitude. The truck had 5 people in it with no power brakes, no engine and going 65 MPH downhill. There was no warning at all. We were able to stop at a safe spot and called a tow truck. The engine started making a loud clanking noise. We had to arrange a ride for all five of us from Payson to Phoenix (~100 miles). This was a very scary situation and it left us shaken. This could have been catastrophic for an inexperienced driver. The truck is currently at AutoNation Toyota Tempe. It has been there for 5 weeks. The dealership told me it needed a new engine. I have now received the official letter mailed to me about the recall. I also called Toyota Corporate and they told me a remedy is not yet available. Not sure how long this is going to take for it to be resolved, but its very frustrating purchasing a new vehicle and having this issue. Any help would be appreciated. The Tundra is still under the factory warranty, plus I also purchased the Toyota extended warranty and Toyota maintenance package.
Was driving with flow of traffic and the Engine lost power went to zero RPM check engine light came on. It’s a non hybrids motor. Wouldn’t turn over once pulled on side of road Check underneath engine bay for leaks of fluid nothing was leaking.
Throttle lag happens quite frequently. Transmission issues dumping into gear stalling at times delayed start. Dealer says it was normal.
On 11/28/2025 I was driving to work and all the warning lights on my 2024 Toyota lit up and the engine shut completely off. I had the vehicle towed to Performance Toyota Dealership in Bountiful, UT. I learned that there is a recall for the engine on these vehicles. The vehicle is still under factory warranty and had 34k miles on it. After a week of my truck sitting at the dealership they still are waiting on a decision from “Corporate” on whether they want to replace the engine under the factory warranty or they want to replace the engine under the recall which they are saying “no remedy” has been put out on the 2024 Tundra recall yet. The outcome of either remedy is a new engine. I also asked about just trading the truck in for a newer model which when I asked they took the Blue Book trade in value down $10k since it had a recall on it. This is no fault of my own and this is terrible customer service from Toyota. I also received a loaner car from them which I cannot drive because I don’t meet the age requirement so my dad has to drive the loaner vehicle which he is very unhappy about since I’m having to borrow his new vehicle to drive back and forth to work and putting miles on his new car. This whole process is very frustrating and unfair to not have a decision made on the engine replacement or being treated fairly on a trade in. Thankfully there was no accident with injuries.
My 2024 tundra with 33000 miles is part of the latest recall, I called the dealership and was told I got to wait ( wait for what a XXX accident to happen) until Toyota sends me a letter and then dealerships get the parts! My truck is ticking, and not even running rite and no parts to fix it? Does anybody know how dangerous this is? XXX I drive myself and family in a 70000 truck that can literally blow up and cause a severe deadly situation especially living in southern Maine, and instead of fixing it rite away I gotta wait months from the sound of it.. no letter, no parts, no loaner, just prayers that God is with us until this XXX is fixed.. sad thing people with a brain know how dangerous it but nobody offers XXX. Hesitation and throttle lag when accelerating the vehicle from a slow speed.
Transmission hesitation when starting from a stop/ stop sign. Will take 1-2 seconds before transmission kicks in after coming to a stop and then proceeding with no one else in the intersection. Happens about 95% of the time. Has put me in a few near- misses where I expected the truck to get out before oncoming traffic. a similar issue occurs when starting on an incline- press the accelerator and it takes a few seconds for the transmission to catch up. Ongoing issue since about 7, 000 miles. Seems to be getting worse
Throttle lag/hesitation. Significant throttle lag/hesitation when trying to accelerate from a dead stop. Throttle input isn’t instant, sometimes the delay in acceleration from a dead stop has put me in dangerous situations when pulling out to the road way or having to move out of the way.
I own a 2024 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition equipped with Falken Wildpeak A/T 265/60R20 112H tires (original equipment). The vehicle currently has 17,000 miles, and the tires have been rotated at regular intervals according to Toyota’s maintenance schedule. Despite proper care, the right front tire has shown excessive wear on the outer edge. This issue first appeared at 5,000 miles and was noted by my Toyota dealer, who performed an alignment and rotation at that time. The same wear pattern has now reappeared and worsened.
Truck has had several instances where there is throttle lag when accelerating from a standstill and from a rolling stop. Happens more often when making a right hand turn. This is a safety issue when turning at a stop sign or stop light in heavy traffic.
The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Tundra. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 25V767000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) and 25V322000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The message "Engine Stopped" was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road, and the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that there were metal shavings inside the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, four weeks after the engine was replaced, while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that force was used to maneuver the steering wheel. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road. There was an unknown message displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that an unknown cable was not attached when the engine was replaced. The dealer tested the battery, and the battery failed the test. The battery was replaced. The contact stated that the infotainment screen displayed the message "Passenger Side Window Open" while the passenger side window was closed. The contact stated that when the passenger’s side window was rolled up, the window independently rolled down a few inches. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.
Both front tires have premature wear to the outer edge. Additionally, all four tires have warned to 3/32" with less than 30,000 miles on them. Vehicle has been serviced by Toyota every 5,000 miles. All components have been inspected and per Toyota the vehicle alignment is within spec per manufacture. That being the case, the tires shouldn't wear unless there is a manufacture defect. Toyota nor Falken wants to honor the warranty or take responsibility for the defect of the OEM equipment. Toyota has a TSB for the Tundra alignment with 18" tires but refuse to add trucks with the 20" tires. They keep pointing the finger at each other leaving the customer with zero resolution. Others have replaced the tires but having the same issue reoccur. This is a safety concern as premature wear can contribute to poor cornering in curves, turns, and handling in wet or icy conditions.
Known issue with these trucks apparently. Occasional throttle lag after stopping at a stop sign, with little response from the gas pedal. On november/december of this month pulling out into a main road with traffic coming, I stepped on the gas and experienced a complete "dead pedal". I stepped on the gas and had 0 response from the truck staying at 5-10 MPH. With cars now coming towards me quickly as I was not moving I floored the gas pedal and had 0 response for another 2-3 seconds until finally the truck jolted at an extreme rate of speed. *Also have a dash cam that recorded in the incident of me flooring it with some vulgar words as cars were coming and the truck was not moving at all.
Severe throttle hesitation/lag when accelerating from a rolling stop for at least 2 seconds. This has happened at least 20 times since purchasing the vehicle in September 2024. On a few occasions, I had to abort acceleration completely to avoid an accident. It’s a very dangerous situation, especially with my family in the vehicle. I have noticed that putting the gear selector into ‘S’ manual mode seems to help considerably, therefore, this appears to be some form of a TCM problem. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they said that it performs like similar trucks. This problem is embarrassing and dangerous, and it needs an expeditious resolution.
Component: Electrical Harness + Vehicle Shakiness Problem: Car would enter LIMP mode randomly and shut the car down to 18 MPH and can cause accidents anywhere, especially in highway where speed limits are 65+. Car also now starts shaking violently when 48 MPH is reached which is a safety concern. Reproduce: First turn taking into dealer they found issue then “disappeared” and they could not reproduce, went in again and they produced it then said that I tried tampering the engine then got corporate involved and they paid all of it. Now they are ghosting me and will not check out the shakiness. Inspected: Only by Summit Toyota Dealership (Akron Ohio) Warning Lamps: Only appeared after issue happened and disappeared when first issue was solved.
Numerous times (4-5) the truck has failed to accelerate from a rolling stop and/or a full stop. One time recently, I stopped and quickly tried to turn left onto another road. As I accelerated, the engine lagged and the truck felt as if it would stall. In all instances, the transmission seems as if it has not downshifted into 1st gear... and appears as if it is stuck in 3rd or 4th gear and the engine struggles to keep up. No warning lights or messages appeared in any of the instances. I am taking it to the dealer for them to look at.
Toyota has just extended the engine recall for debris left in it thru the 2024 year model for all non-hybrid Tundra vehicles. This recall makes no sense the Hybrid vehicles have the exact same engine and therefore have the exact same safety issue. The claim they are not being recalled because they can still be powered by the hybrid system, but this is false. If the engine seizes from this debris it will render the vehicle inoperable and cause a safety issue too. Those with the Hybrid who have experienced the failure confirm the vehicle becomes inoperable. When they take it to Toyota if still under warranty they are only offered a short block rebuild and not the long block and turbos as all non-hybrid receive under the recall. Please look into this issue and force Toyota to extend the recall to both Hybrid and Non-Hybrid as they both have the same engine and pose the same safety risk to the driver and other vehicles on the road.
I experience hesitation when applying the throttle from a stop followed by surging. This is incredibly alarming when trying to pull away from a stop sign or light, especially in residential areas with pedestrian traffic.
While driving the vehicle there is excessive lag in throttle response when giving the vehicle gas pedal input. Example being when you push gas to accelerate there is a 1-2 second delay from the vehicle before there is movement or acceleration. This happens every time i drive the vehicle and has almost caused numerous accidents due to the inconsistent response to throttle input.
Engine hesitates momentarily when pressing accelerator from a complete stop. 98% of the time.
On Wednesday 10/21 at approximately 11:30pm I was traveling on the Clearview Expressway. While changing from the middle last to the left lane at 20mph due to a construction merge with some traffic. When trying to accelerate the truck lost all throttle power and my speed quickly dropped to 12mph before throttle response came back. No noticeable or harsh change of gear for this episode.
On Tuesday 10/21 at approximately 4:30pm I was on the Grand Central Parkway traveling about 50mph. When trying to accelerate the truck lost all throttle power and I quickly lost speed down to 40mph before throttle response came back. There was a noticeable change in gear upon throttle resuming.
I am the second owner of a 2024 Toyota Tundra that is branded as a manufacturer buyback/lemon. The first owner had the engine short block replaced at around 31,000 miles due to bearing failure. I later bought this truck at around 36,000 miles specifically because Toyota stated that the engine problem had been fixed with the short-block replacement. I relied on that representation and believed I was buying a vehicle whose defect had been properly remedied. Toyota has now issued safety recall 25V767 / 25TA14 (“engine may stall during driving”) for this same V35A engine, including service short blocks. I am concerned that the earlier short-block repair either did not fully fix the underlying defect or may have introduced additional problems. At around 41–42k miles, the truck developed starting issues and then completely failed to start, leaving me stranded in the middle of an intersection in town. The vehicle would not crank or start and had to be towed out of traffic, which I consider a serious safety risk. The dealer ultimately replaced a 50-amp fusible link, the 12V battery, and the starter. The total repair bill was about $2,100 before my third-party extended warranty paid a portion of it. Even with that coverage, this is an extremely expensive repair for a relatively new truck that has already had major engine work. Now I have engine history, electrical/starter problems, and I do not know what other issues may appear. I trusted Toyota’s assurance that the engine problem was fixed, and that is why I felt comfortable buying a branded lemon; this now feels like I was misled or cheated. I am also aware of ongoing engine and reliability complaints on newer 2024–2025 Tundras, which suggests there may be a broader design or quality issue. My concern is that my truck remains defective despite the prior engine short-block replacement and that other owners could experience similar no-start or stall situations in traffic.
On Saturday 10/18 I was traveling about 60mph on the Long Island Expressway at approximately 12:30pm when I went to accelerate to pass a vehicle. Immediately upon pressing the accelerator the truck lost all throttle power and I quickly lost speed down to 45mph before throttle response came back. The truck harshly went into gear once throttle power resumed.
Was driving at approx 35mph when engine started making clanking noise and truck shut off. Stalled on main road and barely made it into parking lot. Tried to started it again and did not start. Had truck towed to dealership where dealership assumed engine has ceased at 32k miles. No warning, messages, or symptoms.
I have taken my vehicle in more than 3 times, regarding braking issues, the vehicle would brake automatically even when there is nothing in front of it, the pre collision sensor comes on in rain when there is no debris in front of it.Vwhicle was having throttle lag when come to a complete stop at a light. Now the panoramic roof is leaking, took it to the dealer more than 3 rimes for some these issues, regarding the roof leak, they said they were unable to duplicate it, I have videos showing it was leaking & pictures of all the malfunction from the dashboard.
Complete engine failure at 62,000 miles. This has been an ongoing problem with Toyota tundras with a V6 twin turbo. I was told that the dealership that the 2024 models were not affected by the known manufacturing defect. There’s been a complete recall of the 2022 and the 2023 models. This could be a safety issue if I was driving on the highway and had the engine failure. The dealer confirmed that this is an ongoing issue, and there may be an expansion of the recall.
2024 Toyota tundra limited Engine locked up 47k miles and changed oil 5000 miles .good thing i wasn't in a turn would have gone off road .
Hybrid 2024 Toyota, was accelerating on freeway on ramp when I received a notification of hybrid system malfunction and engine shutdown notice, "pullover". I was not able to use either system as there was no charge on the hybrid system and the hybrid system was not functioning due to the error, and the engine was shutdown. I was put in a situation of having to coast in a location of high vehicle traffic and greater relative speed to the road shoulder until I could safely stop.
Fuel gauge won’t reset after filling the tank or it will stay on full after using the entire tank of gas. Running out of fuel on the freeway is a major safety issue!
Both passenger seats by controls plastic cracking. Infotainment center blacks out and marker bars and back up lines for both back up and front parking have disappeared. GPS even when linked to my phone screen will black out but phone gps will still work. I have complained about this multiple times. Toyota did a factory reset on it and didn’t fix the issue took it back and a tech had to re-install program said the Infotainment center has a known issue where it forgets the program. I also informed Toyota about the engine seems to be really sluggish when at a complete stop and then start again taking a few seconds to go along with shifting hard from stop and go. Toyota did say they saw what I saw and this usually happens when people double foot pedals. I told them I don’t do that. I am frustrated and don’t know what to do I have a 72k truck that just turned 17k miles on it with a lot of issues what will I have to deal with down the road once the warranty is up? I love Toyota but this time seems like I got a lemon from Toyota with all the issues and continued rising issues.
Vehicle completely shut off on remote 2 lane country road while traveling. No warning lights were noted or noises observed before the engine failure. Truck power steering failed to operate at optimal due to the engine cutting off. Was hard to get vehicle off into the grass as there were no shoulders to pull off to. Vehicle behind me as coming up a hill when this occurred had to break as well. The vehicle was towed to a dealership and they have confirmed catastrophic engine damage, and found metal in oil pan. This same problem occurred with the 23 Toyota Tundra's as well. The vehicle is currently at Bruner Toyota in Brownwood, Texas and a Toyota technician has been brought in. The truck has 47,698 miles on it.
While moving through an intersection the vehicle will occasionally loose power and the engine returns to idle. I will press on the gas for 3-4 seconds before the engine throttle reacts and the vehicle starts to accelerate. This has happened many times. The vehicle will turn or brake but it will not accelerate.
