NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Brakes are squealing and grinding noises when i break. This noises are present no matter the speed. VW Dealership from Kearny Mesa VW, San Diego, California USA. Engine: Start/Stop does shutdown during driving after the autostop system. Electric: Sensors is causing false alerts. I deactivated the system, because the system is constantly detecting alerts for no real threats,
This safety recall has been open for quite some time. I feel unsafe driving with anyone in the passenger seat. When I contacted VW, they simply informed me that a remedy is not yet available. VW says that owners should avoid use of the front passenger seat if possible until the recall repairs have been made.
I was made aware of this recall in June of 2024. I called to schedule my car and when I showed up was told the repair was not available. I was told when the letter was mailed in August I could get my vehicle repaired and advised not to use the front passenger seat. I tried calling again in August and was told still no repair available and "don't use the front passenger seat". I most recently called in November of 2024. Our local dealer told us no repair was available and to call VW's 1800 number. The local dealer also gave misinformation about the recall and when I asked they told me they didn't know. I called VW customer service and was told my car is in wave 3. I asked for reasoning about why my car is in wave 3 and they couldn't give any explanation. When I asked when wave 3 repairs would be available, they didn't have an answer. I was told wave 1 and wave 2 had started but there was no ETA for wave 3 to start and to not use the front passenger seat. This car is our family car. We have enough seatbelts in the car for each person in the family. We have been told for close to 6 months now not to use our primary mode of transportation with no reasoning on why we are in wave 3 and no estimate for a repair to be made. I requested to speak with a supervisor and was denied. I also reached out through the Facebook page of VW and received similar information. (No idea why you are in wave 3 and no ETA on a fix).
Frontal detection sensors randomly go off usually while sitting stationary at traffic lights or stop signs, when there are no cars around the vicinity of my vehicle. Screen displays false detections and alerts with annoying beeps making you think something is going to collide with you. Dealership says there's an internal TSB on this problem, but they don't know how to fix it.
I have owned this vehicle for not even a year and bought it as a family car. It only has 24k miles. I have had consistent problems with it since the purchase. The vehicle has shut off SIX times while I've been driving. The first time I was stopped at a stop light when my car shut off. I took it in for service and VW said they couldn't "replicate the issue" so they wouldn't do anything. It has shut off five more times since then. A few of the incidents I wasn't even stopped at a stoplight but was breaking to slow down and the car shut off. My airbag warning also pops on and off all the time. It dings constantly. I took it in for service and they told me the item was being recalled and there is no fix. I now cannot have passengers in my family vehicle. I have now learned that the car has oil leaking onto the engine. This vehicle is in warranty, so at least I won't have to pay for it but it is the most unreliable car I have ever owned. I have a five year old Subaru that has not had a single problem. I do not feel safe driving my Atlas, and I do not feel safe putting my child in it. I need to get a new reliable vehicle but I have a loan on the atlas. I feel stuck in a death trap. I will never buy a VW again.
While driving, the steering wheel warning light briefly flashed on my dashboard and then disappeared. Later, it came back on and stayed illuminated. A few minutes after that, my car caught fire, which spread to my garage and caused significant damage to my house.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the daytime running lights failed to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the lights were not operating as designed. The contact was informed that the front driver’s side headlight unit needed to be replaced. The headlight unit was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure; however, no assistance was provided. The contact was referred to the dealer to pay for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact received notification on NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V464000 (AIR BAGS); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and confirmed that the part was not yet available. The failure mileage was 56,000. VIN too confirms parts not available.
Vehicle was left parked over the weekend and on Tuesday I went to start the car and got errors of a low coolant. Vehicle suffered a massive coolant leak just sitting on the weekend. Two year old vehicle with 27K miles.
The auto start function shuts my car off when I am stopped for a certain amount of time and will not turn back on. The first time it happened I was 10/7/2024 at a stop light in traffic and took it to the dealership to only be told it was a battery issue. I got the battery replaced and have since experienced the issue 3 more times. The night before Thanksgiving at midnight I was stopped on a hill where I could not shift my car in neutral. I had to sit on the road for 40 minutes before I could get my car back on. On the back country roads going to work(12/14), I again experienced the car shutting off at a stop light in the middle lane. I called the dealership to set up an appointment. They said they ran a diagnostic test on the car and only found the battery needed to be replaced. Nothing else. No matter where I am if I fail to manually turn off the auto start feature I risk my car randomly shutting off on me and not turning back on. I have maintained the maintenance on my car. There are no lights on until the auto start stops my car from turning on I will get an EPC light. Once the car sits for a while, I can start my car and the light doesn’t come back on. This is a major issue and I believe this is truly a manufacturing issue that should be resolved immediately.
Randomly stalled out and shut off. Had the auto start disabled. This happened three times today and has happened totaling 4 more before this- all randomly.
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the recurring brake issues I have experienced with my 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. On December 23, 2023, I took my vehicle to the Alexandria VW dealership in Virginia due to a water-gargling sound that turned out to be related to the brakes. The dealer recommended replacing the brake pads, which I agreed to, at a cost of $700. However, in October 2024, less than a year later, the same issue reoccurred. The same dealership is now recommending that I replace the brake pads again. When I questioned the short lifespan of the brake pads, I was told that modern brake pads typically last less than a year due to California brake laws. This explanation does not seem reasonable, as brake pads should generally last much longer under normal conditions. Furthermore, I believe there may be an underlying issue with the brake system that has not been adequately addressed, leading to this premature wear. I am very disappointed with the quality of service and the lack of a permanent solution to this issue. I kindly request: A thorough investigation into the cause of the recurring brake problem. A permanent fix for the issue, or guidance on how to proceed if the vehicle cannot be repaired to meet reasonable standards. Reimbursement or compensation for the repeated cost of brake pad replacement, if applicable. I need your assistance for this matter. Thank you!
I came to a stop at a red light and the car turned off/battery died. The car was stuck in the middle lane on a 3 lane road during rush hour. There was no warning of a low battery weeks and days before this issue. I had to push the car into a gas station that was luckily right besides the road with oncoming traffic. Again, I was in drive and came to a stop at a red light then the car died.

I discovered my car was leaking a small amount of oil on 08/26/2024. I made a service appointment to get it looked at and found out that the crank case oil separator and the upper timing case were both leaking. These were both found at my local Volkswagen Dealership. I was told to continue driving it but to check my oil levels weekly. On 09/14/2024, I put oil in my car that morning and at 4:30pm my car was smoking, and my oil cap had exploded off from pressure. This caused my car to no longer be safe to drive. No warning lights came on until after the leaks were found then it caused an error with my start-stop which when brought in to be inspected was told this is all related to the issue with the oil leaks.

I contacted VW several times about the faulty airbag sensor/electrical system not working. Was told parts not available. If I’m to get into a crash with a passenger. They will be severally injured due to this part not being available. Recall #24V464 Action Code #69PZ
Fuel, gas tank , start-stop, ignition faulty filter and fuel tank collapsing on itself. Diagnosed at dealership. Car stalled in road, at intersections and inability to start , almost rear-ended , and side collision at traffic lights. (With Children in car) break won't compress to start vehicle. They say they know of problem but don't have parts on hand to fix . And no recall cause they can't determine which ones got faulty parts so seen at dealership. Key fob battery was replaced and epc light came on. Immediately stalled in traffic. Wednesday 28th of August.
Brand new vehicle comes with horrible quality brake pads. The sounds come and go, but usually happens on the initial start of driving. The sounds do not sound normal and multiple 2021 Atlas' have this issue. It's really a shame that they are allowed to sell "new" vehicles with quality of brakes.
Airbag warning light appeared on the dash. I have called the dealership and they haven't offered any way to remedy the issue.

Twice in the last month, while I was driving and slowing to a stop, my 2022 VW Atlas has randomly shut off while in Drive. This is an extremely dangerous situation as I have then had to put the car in neutral to get it started again. I was slowing to a light and had just passed a set of railroad tracks today. I was stuck just past the intersection in heavy traffic. My car is equipped with the “start/stop” feature; however, I had it off both times and was not at a complete stop. No warming systems prior to this happening, after the screen said “start the vehicle manually” I do have an appointment scheduled with my dealer on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while the twelve-year-old child was seated in the second-row passenger side captain's seat, the seat belt locking mechanism malfunctioned and the seat belt was unable to be unlatched, causing the child to become trapped in the seat. The contact stated that scissors were used to cut the seat belt strap to free the child. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the seat belt assembly. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred with the replacement seat belt, and again the seat belt strap was cut to free the child. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 44,000. The VIN was not available.
This vehicle is part of the 69PZ recall. The manufacturer has still not come up with a remedy for my vehicle. It has been close to four months, and I am not able to have anyone use the passenger seat because of this. The company is unwilling to offer any solutions. My passenger airbag light turns on and off and the check engine light is on and the dealership did not fix it.

The air bag warning light would illuminate. The contact stated that the lights on the instrument panel would fail intermittently. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 42,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The PODs system is still hasn't been repaired since the recall was announced in June. I was told a fix was coming in August, but to no avail. I haven't been able to have someone in the passenger seat of the car since the recall.
We have encountered two recalls (one that we are still expecting a fix for) and multiple issues with our VW Atlas that we purchased new in June 2022
Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am writing to formally express my concern about the ongoing recall on my 2024 Volkswagen Atlas due to a faulty airbag issue. This recall, which I was notified of in June 2024, has yet to be resolved, and Volkswagen has not provided any timeline for a fix. This unresolved issue is significantly impacting my family’s safety and quality of life. As this is our only vehicle, we rely on it daily to transport our children to school and ourselves to work. However, I am deeply anxious every time we drive it, especially with my husband in the passenger seat, knowing that Volkswagen cannot guarantee the airbags will function properly in the event of a crash. I contacted Volkswagen directly and asked for reassurance regarding the safety of the airbags, but they were unable to confirm that the system would not pose a danger in an accident. To make matters worse, Volkswagen has offered no support—such as a loaner vehicle or temporary replacement—despite the serious nature of the recall. Selling the vehicle is also not an option, as the unresolved recall renders it practically unsellable. This situation has left me feeling trapped and worried for my family’s safety. I respectfully urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter further and ensure Volkswagen addresses this recall with the urgency it demands. Families like mine should not be left in limbo for months on end with no resolution in sight. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical safety issue. Please let me know if additional information is needed. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
While operating the vehicle at about 50 to 60 mph the automatic emergency breaking system activated without warning and with no vehicles in front, and violently slammed on the breaks causing the vehicle to go into emergency stop in the middle of the highway. This then caused numerous vehicles following to take measures to avoid crashing into the rear of our vehicle. Numerous lights and warning lights started flashing on and off and parts of the screens went black and turned off and on. The car then kept the breaks locked down and we had to limp the car along the shoulder of the road to the dealership to have them look at it. This incident jeopardized the Safety of my family and other drivers and passengers around them. The dealership has not been able to replicate this issue so far. Prior to this incident the technology portion of the vehicle stopped responding, and we were unable to link devices to the vehicle.
Steering gear failed twice i have the first one make my car shake so bad and second it makes horrible noise every time i moved the steering wheel . Both front head light led failed for the day running light. Car has misfiring problems with spark plugs and injectors making driving unpredictable and engine start shaking out of nowhere and epc (electronic power control )light comes on
Panoramic Sunroof on VW Atlas spontaneously exploded. It is at the dealership currently for repair which I was told was an "outside" force that hit it, which is not true! My entire family was in the car while we had to be out of our house for a showing and while returning home we heard what sounded like a gunshot and glass breaking. I started shaking and my husband's ears started ringing it was so loud. I immediately, looked around and asked my kids if they were ok, and they stated yes. We looked up and as we heard wind and above our heads we saw the sunroof explosion. If we didn't have the sunroof shade shut glass would have rained in on us while we drove down the road. The dealership and VW refuse to take responsibility for the $4300+ repair. I was forced to claim it on my insurance which I assume was going to take care of it after reading numerous other reports that the dealer wouldn't take responsibility. There was no prior notice there was any issue with the vehicle.
Using adaptive cruise control with lane departure. Driving on a straight stretch of interstate with audio (music) at high level. Car suddenly braked and jerked wheel right risking a crash. Vehicle does not do well on straight stretches of road. Thinks driver is not steering, and will populate a msg on dash, followed by a red light and a signal tone. These aren't easily noticed when head is up and eyes on road with audio level high. VW should change this to remove braking and instead it deactivates cruise and/or wheel vibrate only.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the front passenger’s side occupant detection system was faulty and needed to be replaced along with the front passenger’s seat wiring harness and front passenger’s seat sensor. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 54,000.

Navigation system is useless. Constantly telling me I’m on a road I’m not actually on. Thousands of people with the same issue in forums online and VW does not appear to know how to fix. Seems to be a CarPlay/navigation issue. Maps are wrong regardless if phone is connected. Reset of infotainment only fixes problem for a few minutes. Currently it tells me I’m driving off road in the middle of a lake, although the car is currently parked in my driveway.
The brakes in this vehicle grind, squeal and jutter and have done so since 3k miles. Under hard stopping conditions I am not confident with this braking system. We have taken the car to the dealership multiple times and every time they advise there is nothing they can do. We have reported the issue to VW of America and they have told me that this is normal, but brakes making these types of sounds and operating this way is not normal.
The atlas has shit off mid drive twice so far. Once with the auto shut off button turned off and once not turned off. It cause the vehicle to suddenly brake and nearly get my family rear ended. Many times it detects objects not there and tries braking in the middle of intersections, while making turns nearly causing us to be tboned. It is not worth my families life so it is currently sitting at the dealership No lights are on the dashboard at this time
Leased vehicle in Aug 2022, brand new. Approx. six months later the vehicle exhibited a recurring noise when braking which sounds like a grinding. The noise is also accompanied with a gurgling sound when stopping originating from the engine compartment on the driver's side. Dealership said it might be break dust, they cleaned the area and test drove the vehicle. It worked fine for less than a day before the noise returned. Additionally, the car has surged when at a stop and turned off unexpected with Auto Start/Stop off. Dealership diagnosed the issues as related to the battery from the factory but stated it is not yet with in the failure limits to constitute a warranty replacement. Just to be clear, the battery is failing but not at the rate the manufacture would cover the replacement. Told by the dealer to wait until the problem becomes worse so they can replace it under warranty.
The collision alert system is activated when we brake and a terrible grinding noise occurs. It seems that the brake issues makes the collision system think the car is not being stopped by the brakes. The dealer refuses to do anything about the issues because there is no nhtsa recall. They claim the issue is humidity.
The infotainment system which displays the backup camera does not come on when the vehicle is started. It can take from 3 to 15 minutes to come on. The dealer has reset the system. They then told us a couple “hacks to try” like putting the parking brake in and off several times. No of this works and they say since NHTSA have not issued a recall the can not do anything. This issues means the vehicle if frequently backed up without the back up camera an important safety feature. Could you please issue a recall so they will finally do. The issues
The brakes make an awful grinding noise that sounds like metal on metal . When braking the collision alert system will go off as if a crash is inevitable like no one is braking. I have had pedestrians flag me down and tell men that the noise is a brake rotor issue and that the pads must be completely gone cause they have never heard them sound that bad. The dealer claims they are fine and it is a know issue and safe even if the collision alert system goes off unnecessarily. The most dangerous thing is the lack of interest they have in investigating the problem.
There needs to be a recall on all 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. There is a major issue with the braking system that if goes unaddressed, will cause accidents. There are many, many people complaining about it and I’m guessing until we start seeing deaths related to it, nothing will get done. The braking system is grinding, squealing and jumping when attempting to brake. This is going to continue to get worse until something gets fixed.
Breaks grind as if they are used up but vehical is new and shouldnt have run through the pad so quickly Breaking becoming harder to stop
My vehicle warning sensors continue to fail despite having them replaced and now their is an unrepairable recall that my cause my passenger airbag to not deploy during head on collision. I feel these are critical safety features are main reasons for purchasing my vehicle. I do not feel safe driving my vehicle with failing and/or potentially failing safety features. I was widowed 18 months ago. If my vehicle causes me to inadvertently harm my passenger due to a safety feature failure I will not be able to live with that. I am very disappointed in VW for the suggestion to turn off the warning features as a solution and the fact that they have yet to come up with a fix for the recall. My vehicle is only 2 years old and I do not feel safe in it. In addition, I am having to have a second fuel injector replaced due to it failing. I believe I was sold a lemon.
Occasionally when the auto stop is on, and I’m a red light the car will obviously stop. However when it’s time to press the gas the car doesn’t move. I make sure it’s in drive. I then press brake again and go back to pushing gas and car won’t even accelerate. I’m then left to turn the car in and off again and then the car will drive. I’ve reported this issue to my dealership and they say they’ve had a few complaints. This is a safety issue because if I’m at a red light that turns green and a car is driving at regular speed thinking I’m about to drive for the green light, yet my car is having this issue I will get hit one day. This happened I. A flat road 4 times now. And it’s random. It’s haplened once whole the auto stop was off too.
vehicle has recurring noise when braking, sounds like a grinding. There is also a gurgling noise when stopping coming from the engine compartment on the driver's side.
When I start driving the vehicle after it has been sitting for a little while (anywhere between a couple hours to overnight), the first few times I use the brakes, it sounds and feels like the brakes are grinding. There is a loud metallic grinding noise until I come to a full stop. This will last for several miles, and eventually go away. At the same time it does this, the driver side alert (cameras) start beeping like crazy. I have taken it in once as it started very shortly after I got the car and they replaced the brakes to appease me even though they said everything looked perfectly fine. They also said the sensors for the camera just needed cleaning off. All of this started happening again about 6 months later. In addition, I also have issues with the car shutting off whenever it feels like it and requiring a manual restart, In the middle of intersections, etc.
brand new car of VW 2022 Atlas Premium, but, with the brake grinding noise issue from starting driving this brand new car. The dealer acknowledged this noise issue, but, stated no safety issue, and asked me to call VW directly. We called VW directly, they said, no safety issue. We questioned we spent about $60k for this brand new car, why having such extremely brake noise from driving from day #1 , why the manufacture and dealer did not take care and fix this issue? and such grinding noise made my wife not dare to press the brake hardly. Such noise made the driver feel so scared, and this scare potentially cause the safety issue.
My brakes have been making a weird sound when I break and at times grind as if the brakes need to be changed. I have taken my car to be serviced for this issue and they tell me that my brakes are great with no issues. That the Atlas have that issue but it’s normal. There are times that it seems my brakes fail. This poses a safety risk for me and my family
While driving the engine just stops running, no power at all and then it tells me to manually start the engine. This has happened at least 5 times in traffic!! Yesterday I was backing up and almost got hit because my engine died and I couldn't steer!
