WHILE ON A TRIP DRIVING 35 MPH, THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP) ON MY 2010 JETTA TDI FAILED, CAUSING THE CAR TO LOSE POWER. THE SQUIGGLY LIGHT CAME ON AND I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT WHERE THE CAR STALLED AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. HAD WE BEEN ON THE FREEWAY, IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, HENCE THE COMPLAINT. ALSO, I HAVE SOME CONCERN THAT VW AMERICA IS BLAMING CUSTOMERS BY SUGGESTING THIS HAPPENS WHEN GASOLINE INSTEAD OF DIESEL IS USED. I WANT TO STATE UNEQUIVOCALLY AS THE ONLY ONE WHO EVER FILLS UP THE TANK THAT I HAVE ALWAYS PUT DIESEL IN THE TANK AND HAVE A RECEIPT INDICATING I HAD PUT IN DIESEL THE DAY BEFORE THE CAR STALLED. I BELIEVE THIS MAY BE A DESIGN FLAW OF THE HPFP AND IF SO, THE CAR SHOULD BE RECALLED AND THE ISSUED FIXED. *TR
THE SEAT BELTS BUCKLES ARE CRAKING IN HALF ON MY CAR. THE DEALER REPLACED ONE ON THE FRONT RIGHT OF THE CAR. IT WAS TOTALLY CRACKED IN HALF, THE PLASTIC COVER OVER THE METAL BUCKLET THAT THE STRAP PASS THROUGH. THE REAR BUCKLES ARE BEGINNING TO SHOW THE SAME CRACKING BUT THEY DID NOT REPLACE THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT TOTALLY CRACKED IN HALF YET. I THINK THAT MANY PARTS OF THE CAR HAVE TO BE TAKEN APART TO DO THIS WORK WHICH RUINS THE INTERIOR. I SAW OTHER USED 2010 CARS ON THE LOT THAT HAVE THE SAME CRACKING OF THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE. *TT
JETTA TDI, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND GLOW PLUG WARNING LIGHT FOLLOWED BY REDUCED POWER. VEHICLE RAN FOR SEVERAL MILES BEFORE STALLING. WOULD NOT RESTART. DEALER REPORTED FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND METAL IN THE FUEL FILTER. *TT
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT APPROX 72 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LURCHED, THE INDICATOR LIGHT FOR THE GLOW PLUG CAME ON, AND THEN ALL POWER WAS LOST AS THE ENGINE STALLED. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY MANEUVER THROUGH TRAFFIC TO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND STOP. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. I HAD REFUELED THE VEHICLE APPROX 168 MILES EARLIER AND HAD BEEN RUNNING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE ENTIRE TIME UNTIL THE VEHICLE MALFUNCTION. I HAVE A 2010 VW JETTASPORTWAGEN TDI. DIAGNOSTIC TESTS RUN BY THE VW DEALER TWO DAYS LATER REVEALED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP HAD DISINTEGRATED, SENDING METAL DEBRIS INTO THE FUEL FILTER AND THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE HAD UNDERGONE A 40K SERVICE JUST THREE DAYS PRIOR BY A VW DEALER. *TR
I'M WAS DRIVING UP HILLS WITH 38 MPH NOTICE THAT GLOW PLUG LIGHT FLASHING THE CAR LOST ALL POWER ALMOST INSTANTLY. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO MANAGED THE CAR TO EMERGENCY LANE. LUCKY THAT I'M NOT ON THE FREEWAY AND I DIDN'T HAVE MY 6 YEARS OLD SON WITH ME AT THAT TIME. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT WE NEED TO ADDRESS TO VWGOA SO THEY CAN DO A RECALL. YOU CAN FIND 100 OR MORE SAME FAILURES AT WWW.TDICLUB.COM, SOME OF THE MEMBER HAD TO REPLACED THE HPFP TWICE. DEALER FOUND HPFP FAILURES. METAL FOUND IN THE FUEL PUMP DUE TO HPFP SELF-DESTRUCTION. REPAIRED AND PAID FOR BY VW. REPLACED THE WHOLE FUEL SYSTEM, TANK, 3 FUEL PUMPS, ALL LINES AND HOSES. *TR
I WAS AT A LIGHT IN FIRST GEAR AT A COMPLETE STOP. THE ENGINE WAS IDLING ROUGH. (NOT THE FIRST TIME, BUT VW COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG). THE RPM ON IDLING IS NORMALLY 800. IT WAS UP TO 1,000. IT SPUTTERED TWICE AND HICUPPED FROM 1000 TO 700 TO 1000 TO 700 IN THE PERIOD OF 3 SECONDS. MY CLUTCH WAS IN AS WAS THE BRAKE AND I WAS IN FIRST GEAR SINCE I WAS AT A LIGHT BUT AT A STANDSTILL. THE CAR SUBSEQUENTLY STALLED WITHOUT ME HAVING MOVED THE CAR. THE CAR RESTARTED AND I STILL DETECTED THE ROUGH IDLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WHEN THE CONTACT NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AREA. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND SENT AN ENGINEER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINE A CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE ENGINEER DISCOVERED THAT THERE WERE LEAVES IN THE ENGINE, CAUSED BY RODENT INFESTATION, WHICH RESULTED IN THE FIRE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER A VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE RECALL COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FIRE AND DID NOT AGREE WITH THE ENGINEER'S FINDINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000. OVER THE PAST 4 YEARS EVERY DOOR ONE BY ONE THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS HAVE FAILED AND NEED TO BE REPLACE. I HAVE RESEARCHED ON-LINE AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON FAILURE FOR VW
THIS VEHICLE IS A DIESEL. AS I WAS PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR TO INCREASE MY SPEED FROM A CONSTRUCTION ZONE SPEED TO 55 MPH THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THE CAR BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND ACTED AS IF NO FUEL WAS BEING INJECTED TO THE ENGINE, AS I PULLED OFF THE ROAD THE CAR KEPT RUNNING BUT IF I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN, NO MOVEMENT ON THE RPM INDICATOR. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR OFF THE HIGHWAY VIA THE EXIT RAMP. IT STARTED UP AND IMMEDIATELY THE WARNING MESSAGE CAME ACROSS THE VEHICLE INFORMATION SCREEN TO SERVICE IMMEDIATELY AND I CAN'T RECALL THE EXACT WORDING BUT BASICALLY SAYING DAMAGE COULD OCCUR. CAR WAS TOWED FOR SERVICE. CAR WAS FIXED ON 4/24/2012 REPLACING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR AND THE ENGINE SPEED SENSOR. PRIOR TO THIS MAJOR MALFUNCTION, THE CAR HAD DIED WHILE IN TRAFFIC TWICE AT A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT, TWICE WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. ALL OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AND DROVE JUST FINE. VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR ROUTINE 40000 NOTHING FOUND AMISS BY MECHANIC. JUST RECENTLY ON 7/12/2012 DIED @ A RED LIGHT. VEHICLE STARTED UP FINE AND NO MESSAGES ON THE SCREEN. 7/19/2012 VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR AFTER STOPPING FOR 20 MINUTES, TURNED CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT WENT INTO GEAR NO PROBLEM. ON 7/28/2012 VEHICLE AGAIN DIED @ A RED LIGHT, STARTED UP JUST FINE, NO WARNING MESSAGES. *TR
DRIVING ON INTERSTATE AT 70MPH. ENGINE GLOWPLUG LIGHT AND MAIN FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON AND ENGINE QUIT. DEALER ADVISED FAILURE WAS DUE TO HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. *JS
ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS WE HAVE HIT POT HOLES IN THE ROAD AT MODERATE SPEED RESULTING IN AN ALUMINUM, WHEEL INCURRING SUBSTANTIAL BENDING AND GOING OUT OF ROUND. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE WHEEL GOES OUT OF BALANCE AND THE CAR LOOSES STABILITY ON THE HIGHWAY. BOTH MY WIFE AND I HAVE EACH BEEN DRIVING FOR MORE THAT 40 YEARS AND WE HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS DEGREE OF FRAGILITY IN THE WHEELS OF ANY OF OUR PRIOR VEHICLES. THE WHEEL DESIGN IS OF SOFT ALUMINUM AND THE STRUCTURE IS CANTELEVERED OVER THE BRAKE DISC GIVING IT VERY LITTLE CENTRAL SUPPORT TO RESIST BENDING WHEN CONFRONTED WITH ORDINARY ROAD DEFORMITIES. WE HAVE KEPT THE LAST TWO WHEELS THAT WERE DAMAGED IN THIS MANNER AND WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO MAKE THEM AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. THE FIRST TWO WERE KEPT BY THE DEALER AT THE TIME OF REPLACEMENT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING IN THE CITY, THE CAR DIESEL ENGINE STARTED TO LOOSE POWER AND VIBRATE. THE CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH TRAFFIC HAVING TO STOP BEHIND US. WE MANAGED TO MOVE ASIDE AND PUSH THE CAR TO A LOW TRAFFIC ROAD. WE TOWED THE CAR TO THE NEAREST GARAGE. AN INITIAL INSPECTION INDICATED THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS DAMAGED, REASON FOR SENDING IT TO THE VW DEALER AT CLEAR LAKE. THE DEALER TOLD US THAT VW OF AMERICA IS CONSIDERING HELPING US WITH THE REPAIR, QUOTED BETWEEN $7,200 TO $10,000, AND HAD INSTRUCTED THEM TO ORDER THE PARTS. TODAY, HOWEVER, IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT I COULD APPROVE THE REPAIRS FOR THEM TO START WORKING ON THE CAR AND NO RESPONSE WAS AVAILABLE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE PROGNOSIS IS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP THAT RELEASED METALLIC DEBRIS INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM. AT THE MOMENT OF THE INCIDENT THE CAR WAS BARELY 15 MONTHS OLD, WITH 43K MILES AND PROPERLY MAINTAINED. IT DOES NOT GO THROUGH HEAVY TRAFFIC AND ONLY RIDDEN ON REGULAR ROADS. TO MY QUESTION ABOUT HOW COULD I HAVE AVOIDED THIS PROBLEM, THE VW SERVICE REP STATED THAT IT WAS A SIMPLE MECHANICAL FAILURE. *TR
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING JETTA TDI TO/FROM WORK. TOOK IT TO DEALER AND THEY REPORTED IT WAS THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SENSOR (VEHICLE STORING FAULT P0191). THEY REPLACED THE SENSOR (THINKING IT FAULTY), BUT THE FOLLOWING DAY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPORTED THE SAME FAULT. DEALER KEPT VEHICLE FOR INVESTIGATION. THEIR INVESTIGATION REVEALED METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE REMAINED WITH THE DEALER BETWEEN 03/23-03/27 WHEREIN THEY REPLACED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. ON THE MORNING OF 06/29 WENT TO START CAR AND COULD NOT GET IT TO START. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALER AND THE REPLACEMENT HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WAS DETERMINED FAULTY. *JS
OVER A WEEK AND 200 MILES AFTER FILLING UP. WITH DIESEL. THE CAR SUFFERED A FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE RESULTING IN A COMPLETE ENGINE SHUTDOWN AT 45 MPH WITH NO RESTART. THIS INCLUDED A REDUCTION IN STEERING AND BRAKING POWER. VW DEALER STILL HAS THE CAR AS OF 3/27/2012. CLAIMING HIGH LEVELS OF GASOLINE IN THE FUEL. WHEN ASKED HOW THEY DETERMINED THE PRESENCE OF GASOLINE THEY SAID THEY COULD SEE IT IN A SAMPLE. NO REAL ANALYSIS. JUST VISUAL ASSESSMENT. OPENED AN INCIDENT REPORT WITH FUEL SUPPLIER AND THEY SAY IT IS MOST LIKELY A DIFFERENCE IN SEASONAL MIXES OF DIESEL FUELS. VW SAYS THEY ARE GOING TO REPAIR THE CAR FOR FREE THEN VOID MY WARRANTY ON THE FUEL SYSTEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WHILE TRAVELING 30 MPH THE CONTACT NOTICED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL GEAR AND WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO ANY OTHER GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,600.
ICE IN THE AIR INTAKE CAUSED THE ENGINE TO VAPOR LOCK WHICH CAUSED A BENT PISTON ROD. DEALER IS GOING TO REMOVE THE FACTORY AIR INTAKE AFTER INSTALLING A NEW ENGINE UNDER WARRANTY AND CLAIMS THIS IS AN ENGINEERED FIX. DEALER ALSO SAID THAT VOLKSWAGEN IS WORKING ON SOME HEATER ADD ON IN THE POSSIBLE FUTURE. I SUSPECT THAT THE CURRENT FIX IS NOT A FIX AS THE TROUBLE WAS NOT WHEN DRIVING IT WAS AFTER THE CAR SET FOR A FEW DAYS AND ICE FORMED IN THE INTAKE. NHTSA SHOULD INVESTIGATE TO CONFIRM THE ENGINEERING ISSUE IS ADDRESSED CORRECTLY TO PROTECT CONSUMERS. *KB
VEHICLE STALLED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS. IN MARCH THE CAR CUT OFF WHILE SITTING AT A LIGHT. ON 4/17/12, THE VEHICLE STALLED WHEN COMING TO A STOP FROM AN OFF RAMP. *JS
I HAVE EXPERIENCED REPEATED PROBLEMS WITH MY TDI MANUAL TRANSMISSION JETTA SPORTWAGEN. WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH OF BUYING THIS VEHICLE, I EXPERIENCED A LURCHING SENSATION WHICH WOULD COME AND GO RANDOMLY ESPECIALLY WHEN IN THIRD GEAR. BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY COULDN'T REPLICATE. THIS HAS CONTINUED SPORADICALLY FOR OVER A YEAR AND A HALF. THE VEHICLE ALSO SOMETIMES IDLES VERY ROUGHLY WHEN AT A STOP. MORE RECENTLY, IN MARCH 2012, THE VEHICLE STALLED TWICE WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 30 - 40 MPH AND ALSO NOW IN MAY 2012 IT HAS DONE THIS AGAIN. THERE ARE NEVER ANY WARNING LIGHTS THAT GO ON, ONLY THE ENGINE LIGHT ONCE IT HAS ACTUALLY STALLED. BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER EVERYTIME THIS HAS HAPPENED AND THEY ARE NEVER ABLE TO REPLICATE THE SITUATION, SO THEY SEND ME HOME WITH IT. I WAS VERY UPSET WITH THIS AND CONFRONTED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS WHEN I REALIZED HOW MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS. THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING TO FIX. THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOTIFY VOLKSWAGEN AND I CALLED THEM AS WELL AND HAVE NOW BEEN GIVEN A CASE NUMBER. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR MAJOR LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS IF A CAR STALLS WHILE DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. I FEEL LIKE I AM DRIVING AROUND IN A TIME BOMB, BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. *TR
ENGINE COMPLETELY AND SUDDENLY STALLED OUT AFTER STOPPING AT AN INTERSECTION. THE CAR WAS RESTARTED WITHOUT HESITATION OR DELAY. *TR
COMPLETE ENGINE SHUT-OFF, WITHOUT WARNING OR STUMBLING, INCLUDING ALL SUPPORT SYSTEMS (POWER STEERING AND BRAKES, ETC). NO DASH LIGHTS, ETC. AFTER 30 SECONDS, CAR RESTARTS. HAS NOW HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. DEALER HAS EXAMINED AND OFFERS NO EXPLANATION OR FIX, BECAUSE THEY CAN'T "REPLICATE" THE PROBLEM, AND CAR THROWS NO CODES WHEN FAILURE OCCURS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE SUDDENNESS OF THE FAILURE LEAVES LITTLE TIME TO PULL OFF THE ROAD, SOMETIMES FORCING DRIVER TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD! *TR
VW HAS REPLACED CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS AND THE NEW BUSHINGS HAVE FAILED SHORTLY THEREAFTER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF HIS VEHICLE, CAUSING HIM TO BE PUSHED INTO A PRECEDING VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE HEAD, NECK AND BACK. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A SALVAGE LOT. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THAT THE AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE IMPACT. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 39,000.
ENGINE SPUTTERED AND QUIT WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT NORMAL SPEED. WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP SAFELY DUE TO PROXIMITY OF EXIT RAMP. WOULD NOT RESTART. VEHICLE TOWED TO VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY CLAIMED FUEL CONTAMINATION, RESULTING IN FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. REPAIRS WERE NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY BECAUSE THEY CLAIMED FUEL CONTAMINATION WAS THE CAUSE. I HAVE THE FUEL RECEIPT FROM THE PREVIOUS FILL-UP WHERE IT SHOWS BP DIESEL WAS USED. I HAVE COMPLETE SERVICE RECORDS AND MAINTAIN THE VEHICLE IN PERFECT CONDITION. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE DESIGN OF VOLKSWAGEN'S FUEL PUMP. *TR
WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO A STOP THE CAR HESITATES WHILE IDLING AND THEN WHEN YOU START TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL TO GO IT HESITATES MORE AND ALMOST STALLS. THE COOLING FAN SEEMS TO RUN EXCESSIVELY AFTER TURNING OFF MOTOR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THERE WERE NO FAILURES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR THE SAME FAILURE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,758. UPDATED 2/25/2013 *JS
THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE IN TWO WEEKS WHERE MY VW JETTA TDI AUTOMATIC (DSG) 2010 CAR WITH 58K MILES STALLED. I AM ORIGINAL OWNER, HAVE NO PREVIOUS ISSUES WITH THE CAR AND HAVE COMPLETED ALL REQUIRED MAINTENANCE. SYMPTOM. SHORTLY AFTER STARTING CAR AND COMMENCING TO DRIVE, THE ENGINE SPUTTERED AND STALLED WITH JUST OVER 100 FT OF MOTION. I PLACED THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND WITH SLIGHT HESITATION, THE ENGINE STARTED AND I WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMAL DRIVING. IN THE FIRST OCCURRENCE (APPROXIMATELY 1/5/12), THE CAR WAS PARKED OUTSIDE AT WORK FOR 8 HOURS AND THE OUTSIDE TEMP WAS IN THE LOW 30S. THIS STALL OCCURRED IN THE PARKING LOT THE SECOND EVENT (1/15/12), THE CAR HAD BEEN IN THE GARAGE FOR JUST OVER 2 HOURS AND THE OUTSIDE TEMP WAS 20. CAR WAS DRIVEN DAILY AND AIR BAG ERROR INDICATOR CAME ON AND HAS STAYED ON. VW NOT WILLING TO FIX ISSUE AT ALL. *TR
DRIVING SOUTHBOUND ON INTERSTATE I-75 AT APPROXIMATELY 12:30AM VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND ENGINE STALLED OUT. VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT OFF INTERSTATE SAFELY AND COAST TO A STOP FIVE MILES FROM OUR EXIT. VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AT ALL, ENGINE WOULD CRANK OVER BUT NOT START. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP LATER THAT MORNING. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT OF VEHICLE LOSING POWER AND NOT BEING ABLE TO RESTART IT. FIRST INCIDENT WAS APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS PRIOR TO THIS ONE. THERE HAVE BEEN ONLY TWO DRIVERS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND THERE HAS BEEN NO ISSUE OF CROSS CONTAMINATION OF FUELS. 2010 JETTA WAGON TDI (35,500 MILES); WOULDN'T START IN AM BEFORE WORK. WOULD CRANK BUT NOT TURN OVER. HAD IT TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. SAID "FUEL WAS CONTAMINATED" AND THAT THE TECH SAW SPECKS OF SOMETHING THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. THEY TRIED THE LINE ON ME OF "YOU MUST HAVE MIXED IT WITH GAS". I BOUGHT A DIESEL B/C I WANTED TO DRIVE A DIESEL. I DIDN'T MIX THEM UP. NOT TO MENTION I HAD ALREADY DROVE THROUGH HALF A TANK OF FUEL BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. VW AGREED TO WARRANTY THE REPAIR HOWEVER AT $7500. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT TIME? AM I OUT $8K? I HAVE THE TOP TIER "PLATINUM" WARRANTY BUT WILL IT BE COVERED FOR "CONTAMINATION?" I FIND IT ODD THAT VW IS COVERING THE COST YET IT'S "NOT THEIR FAULT". WHAT COMPANY HONORS A WARRANTY WHEN THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGE? SO WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE TDI OWNERS? ARE WE SUPPOSED TO CARRY AROUND A CHEMISTRY SET AND TEST THE FUEL BEFORE WE FILL UP? I HAVE HAD SEVERAL ISSUES IN THE PAST MONTH WITH MY VEHICLE EITHER STALLING IMMEDIATELY AFTER START (WHILE CLUTCH STILL DEPRESSED) OR SHORTLY AFTER DRIVING. VOLKSWAGEN HAS IDENTIFIED THIS AS AN ISSUE WITH THE INTERCOOLER; THERE IS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN THAT IS LETTING WATER INTO THE AIR PIPES WHICH IS COLLECTING AND FREEZING. THREE TIMES THIS HAPPENED IN TRAFFIC, ONE TIME WHILE CROSSING A LANE WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC GOING 50MPH. VW DRAINED THE INTERCOOLER TWO WEEKS AGO AND SENT ME ON MY WAY BECAUSE THE PART IS BEING REDESIGNED AND IS ON BACKORDER. A WEEK LATER MY CAR FAILED SHORTLY AFTER LEAVING MY DRIVEWAY, STRANDING ME ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED BACK TO MY DRIVEWAY. VW DEALERSHIP AND CUSTOMER CARE WERE CLOSED FOR THE WEEKEND. MONDAY I HAD TO TAKE A TOW TRUCK RIDE 1.5 HOURS TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY'VE DRAINED IT AGAIN AND WANT ME TO PICK IT UP BUT HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE IS NOT FIXED. THEY ACKNOWLEDGE IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE, THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY AND YET THEY WANT ME TO PICK UP AN UNREPAIRED CAR BECAUSE VW DOES NOT HAVE PARTS TO REPAIR IT. THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ON MY 2010 VW TDI FAILED ON THE HIGHWAY CAUSING A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. THE VEHICLES WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE INJECTOR PUMP WAS THE PROBLEM. *KB
THE CAR AFFECTED IS A 2010 VW JETTA TDI. EVER SINCE I'VE OWNED THE CAR, IT HAS HAD AN ISSUE WITH RUNNING RUFF OR STALLING OUT. AT 30,426 MILES I HAD THE DEALER LOOK AT THE VEHICLE. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND TEST DRIVE WITH NO ISSUES FOUND. THIS ENOUGH FOR IT TO BE NOTICEABLE, BUT NO SYMPTOMS ARE PRESENT. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN AGAIN FOR THE SAME ISSUE ON 12/8/14 AT 83748 MILES, BUT THIS TIME THERE WAS AN ESP ERROR THAT FLASHED IN THE MDI DISPLAY AND THEN WENT AWAY. THE DEALER COULD NOT VERIFY THE CUSTOMER COMPLAINT. THE SERVICE MANAGER ALSO STATED THAT HE HAD A SIMILAR VEHICLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE COULD ALSO NOT BE DIAGNOSED. AT THE TIME THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT I COULD HAVE THE SOFTWARE UPGRADED AND THAT WOULD BE A CHARGE TO ME OR I COULD HAVE THE INJECTORS CHANGED OUT AND THAT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE WERE CHARGING ACCORDING TO HOW THEY WERE GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM, NOT ON THE ISSUE ITSELF. VW SENT ME THE PAPERWORK IN APRIL OF 2015 TO GET MY MONEY BACK. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED CHANGING THE MDI DISPLAY, BUT WAS NOT SURE THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. MY CONCERN IS THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE THAT VOLKSWAGEN CANNOT DIAGNOSE THAT COULD POSSIBLY TURN INTO A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE CAR STALLING. *TR
ACCELERATING AT 40MPH CAR BEGAN TO RUN ROUGH AND LOSE POWER. ENGINE GLOW PLUG LIGHT BEGAN TO FLASH. CAR STALLED AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. CAR TOWED TO HILEY VOLKWAGEN IN ARLINGTON TEXAS. SERVICE DEPARTMENT STATES THAT HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP DISINTEGRATED AND THAT METAL PARTICLES WERE FOUND IN THE FUEL LINES. WILL BE REBUILDING THE FUEL SYSTEM AND REPLACING THE FUEL TANK. *TR
VEHICLE QUIT ON A MAIN STREET GOING UP A BRIDGE RISE. HAD HE CAR TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE WE PURCHASED FROM. SERVICE MANAGER SAID THERE WAS A LARGE AMOUNT OF METAL FOUND IN THE FILTER ELEMENT. THEY WHERE SENDING FUEL SAMPLES TO VW FOR ANALYSIS. THREE DAYS LATER THEY GAVE ME A RENTAL CAR FOR 10 DAYS. THEY ARE REPLACING EVERYTHING IN THE FUEL SYSTEM, INCLUDING THE TANK. *TR

I ASKED WERE THERE ANY WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH THAT WERE ON SHE SAID THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON WAS ON AND THAT WAS ALL. SHE MADE IT HOME , CALLED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. WE CARRIED THE CAR THEY SAID THEY CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER. BROUGHT THE CAR HOME ,IT RAN FINE FOR A FEW DAYS THEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. THE NEXT DAY I CONTACTED VOLKSWAGEN ASSISTANCE FOR THEM TO TOW IT TO THE SHOP. THE CAR WAS UNDER THE CARPORT , I WAS GOING TO PUSH IT OUT TO GO ON THE TOW TRUCK , BUT IT STARTED AND RAN FINE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ENGINE LIGHT BEING ON. THE WRECKER CARRIED IT TO THE SHOP. THE DEALERSHIP CALLED ME ONJAN. 03 2012 AND TOLD ME THE FUEL WAS CONTAMINATED WITH WATER, AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO FLUSH THE SYSTEM($500_+). THEY CALLED BACK THE NEXT DAY AND SAID THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE EVERYTHING IN FUEL SYSTEM($8500 +). AFTER SOME RESEARCH MY CAR IS DOING THE SAME THINGS AS IF THE FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WOULD NOT TAKE THE LIABILITY FOR REPLACING ANY ADDITIONAL PARTS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 29,000. KMJ
WHEN SITTING ON A UPHILL INCLINE PREPARING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC I PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR AND STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS. THE TRANSMISSION FINALLY TOOK HOLD AFTER THE PEDAL WAS PRESSED A NUMBER OF TIMES TO THE FLOOR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE! I HAVE READ ONLINE FORUMS AND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED. DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT 45 MPH THE CAR DASH DINGED, I LOOKED DOWN AND IMMEDIATELY THE CAR LOST POWER. I WAS ALMOST IN MULTIPLE ACCIDENTS AS THE CAR SLOWED RAPIDLY WITHOUT BRAKE LIGHTS (THE CAR ENGINE STOPPED SO SUDDENLY THAT IT TOOK THREE OR FOUR SECONDS TO COMPREHEND THE SITUATION AND ACTIVATE HAZARD LIGHTS AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION) TO WARN OTHER CARS THAT I NO LONGER HAVE POWER. DIESEL ENGINE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED WHILE I WAS TRYING TO PASS ANOTHER CAR ON THE FREEWAY. THIS IS A 2010 TDI WAGON WITH THE DSG AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION WAS A PROBLEM FROM THE START BEING VERY JUMPY STARTING OFF AND STALLING REPEATEDLY IN STOP-AND-GO TRAFFIC. THE DEALER AFTER NUMEROUS REQUESTS FINALLY AGREED TO LET ME DEMONSTRATE THE PROBLEM WHICH I DID. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC CONTROLLER BUT THEN FOUND THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED COMPLETELY. I REPLACED THE CAR WITH A 2012 MODEL BUT WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THE DSG IS A DANGEROUS TRANSMISSION MAKING THE CAR OPERATION ERRATIC AND UNPREDICTABLE. *TR
2010 VW JETTA TDI WITH ROUGHLY 35,650 MILES. WHILE DRIVING UP THE ON-RAMP TO ENTER THE INTERSTATE, GLOW PLUG DASH LIGHT CAME ON AND WARNED TO "CHECK ENGINE NOW." WITHIN 20 SECONDS, THE CAR LOST ALL POWER, AND LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COAST OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE INTERSTATE (WITH DRIVERS FLYING BY AT 65+MPH AT 9:45PM). VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE VW DEALERSHIP. SERVICE REP CLAIMED "FUEL CONTAMINATION," WITH METAL SHARDS ALL THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM HAS TO BE REPLACED ($10,000 REPAIR) WITH EQUIVALENT, NEW PARTS. ACCORDING TO VW SERVICE TECHNICIANS, THE PARTS HAVE NOT BEEN UPDATED DESPITE VW'S KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM. AS A RESULT, "FUEL CONTAMINATION" COULD HAPPEN AGAIN, AND THE CAR COULD SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AT ANY TIME WITHOUT NOTICE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. LUCKILY, BECAUSE I WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT, THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF CONGESTION ON THE ROAD. HAD THIS HAPPENED DURING RUSH HOUR, THERE VERY LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN A SEVERE ACCIDENT. VW CLAIMS THE PROBLEM IS A RESULT OF THE POOR QUALITY OF AMERICAN DIESEL FUEL SUPPLY, SAYING THE TDIS ARE DESIGNED IN GERMANY TO RUN ON 100% DIESEL THAT'S FOUND IN EUROPE. IF THIS IS THE CASE, WHY ARE THEY SELLING GERMAN DESIGNED CARS IN THE UNITED STATES THAT DOESN'T HAVE FUEL SUPPLIES THAT ARE 100% DIESEL? I THEN TAKE IT TO DEALER THEY TAKE A LOOK AND REPLACE THE TANK FUEL PUMP.... I THEN DRIVE IT BACK TO PORTLAND NO PROBLEM UNTIL ALMOST AT MY HOTEL LIGHT STARTS BLINKING AND LIMP MODE. NEXT DAY MANAGE TO JUST MAKE IT BACK TO DEALER THEY GIVE ME A RENTAL AND ORDER IN A VALVE OR SENSOR NOT SURE. CAR IS READY LATE THE NEXT DAY SO I PREFER TO PICK UP TO SAT MORNING.SAT MORNING I GET LESS THAN 1 MILE FROM DEALER AND THE WARNING LIGHTS STARTS AGAIN AND LIMP MODE TAKE IT BACK. FOLLOWING MONDAY I GET A CALL TO ORDER IN SOME PARTS, NEXT DAY I GET ANOTHER CALL THAT THEY ARE REPLACING THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. REPLACED THE ENTIRE DIESEL FUEL SYSTEM 26+ COMPONENTS UNDER WARRANTY. GOT CAR BACK ON THE 23RD OF NOVEMBER 2011. *TR

WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A BUSY DOWNTOWN, OUR CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT RESTART. IT WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST VW DEALERSHIP. THE NEXT DAY, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS RELATED TO A FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THE FUEL PUMP HAD "COME APART" AND SENT METAL SHARDS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. WHEN ASKED WHY THIS WOULD HAPPEN HE STATED THAT "IT WASN'T THE KIND OF THING THAT YOU COULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING TO AVOID OR PREVENT". AT THE TIME, WE WERE NOT AWARE OF THE FEDERAL INVESTIGATION AND DID NOT ASK ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS. THE CAR WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR 5 BUSINESS DAYS AND MOST OF THE FUEL SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED (FILTERS, PIPES, HOSES, PUMP, FUEL DISTRIBUTOR, ETC.). WHEN WE TRIED TO GET MORE INFORMATION FROM A CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE LATER IN THE WEEK (AFTER WE LEARNED OF THE INVESTIGATION), HE DENIED ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL PUMP BUT DID SAY THAT OUR FAILURE APPEARED NOT TO BE CAUSED BY CONTAMINATED DIESEL. HE REFUSED TO COMMENT FURTHER ON THE SITUATION AND WOULD NOT TELL US WHETHER OR NOT THE PUMP HAD BEEN REDESIGNED SINCE OUR VEHICLE WAS MADE. WHEN WE PICKED UP OUR CAR THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS ALSO "UNSURE" WHETHER OR NOT THE PUMP HAD BEEN REDESIGNED. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE ARE STILL VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OUR CAR AND WE?RE THINKING ABOUT TRADING IT IN. IT WAS A VERY FRIGHTENING AND FRUSTRATING EXPERIENCE. *TR
