There are 50 owner-reported electrical system complaints for the 2006 BMW 3 Seriesin NHTSA's database. These are unverified consumer reports and may not reflect confirmed defects.
While driving the vehicle, the blower (A/C) began to cycle on and off. Then I began to smell electrical smoke. Then I began to see smoke coming from vents and where the windshield meets the dashboard, closer to the passenger side. I pulled over and shut off the car as the smoke was getting worse inside the car. I popped the hood and saw smoke coming from the passenger side. I then called 911. Smoke was beginning to billow from engine compartment. As I was talking to the 911 dispatcher, I saw flames beginning in the engine bay close to the firewall on passenger side. The car was a total loss and is in a tow yard. It can be inspected upon request. The 911 operated told me to be aware of smoke and explosions so I backed away about 30ft. Many cars were passing by, close to the car. There are 2 safety recalls on this vehicle that are related to possible fire. I have an open case with BMW USA. They have not inspected the car. I have liability only for insurance so they will not cover. There were no warning lamps or indicators before fire.
The Valvetronic Actuator malfunctions. The malfunction may have been caused by a Battery Positive Cable that has corroded over time. The result is that the vehicle stops unexpectedly during acceleration. Driver safety and that of others is put at risk due to the vehicle suddenly losing power and stoping while being driven. The vehicle was evaluated by the dealer. Warning lamps were intermittent and inconsistent. To my knowledge there is no Valvetronic Actuator or Battery Cable specific warning lamps or messages. There was a 2017 recall for the Battery Positive Cable, but my specific VIN was not covered (by a few months). My VIN (1986 325I) should have been included in the 2017 recall.
Internal Adaptive bi-xenon headlight wiring insulation flaking off exposing bare wire, thus causing headlight to fail
After recall done pvc valve and blower heat a/c now not working the car engine light come up abs /brake and more
All door lock actuators (including the fuel cap door cover) stopped working after driving the vehicle. The passenger and both rear doors were able to open via the inside door handle, but the driver side door could not be unlocked via the key fob, console lock button, or manually pulling the inside door handle. The fuel cap door cover could only be opened via the emergency release pull in the trunk. After inspecting the fuse box, I found that fuse 57a was blown. I replaced the fuse and the locking mechanisms started functioning again. weeks later the same issue occurred, only replacing the fuses remedied the problem for only a day or two. The fact that the driver's side door could not be opened by ANY means from inside or outside the vehicle poses a severe safety risk in situations where the driver of the car needs to exit the vehicle themself or be evacuated carefully in the event of injury. There are NO warnings, messages or warning signs before this occurs. This appears to be a common issue on my model and others, originating from issues with the door lock actuators. BMW even has a service information bulletin about it: "SI B51 19 07". The fact that the driver-side door can spontaneously become unopenable from inside or outside while the driver is in the car is a HUGE safety risk.
BMW has issued a recall with no resolution. My engine is making noises from the crankcase and no alternative has been offered at this moment. The dealer does not want to address the issue.
The contact owned a 2006 BMW 330i. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 MPH, the air conditioning unit suddenly shut off and smoke began to come out of the air conditioning vents. After the contact exited the vehicle flames were present coming from under the passenger side dashboard. The fire and police departments were called to the scene and the flames were extinguished. During the incident, the vehicle was destroyed. A fire and a police report were taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The local dealer was notified of the incident. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 190,000.

Parts distribution disconnect.
Over heating and smell of burning plastic
GOING THROUGH MY NEWLY PURCHASED, USED 2006 330XI, I FOUND SEVERAL WARNINGS FOR FRONT HEADLIGHT MALFUNCTIONS. FURTHER INVESTIGATION SHOWED ADAPTIVE FUNCTIONS WERE DISABLED AND THE LEFT LOW BEAM WAS STUCK POINTING LEFT. WHILE THE BULBS THEMSELVES WERE STILL FUNCTIONING, THE LIGHT WAS POINTED DIRECTLY AT ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND DID NOT ILLUMINATE THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME. OPENING THE ACCESS PANEL AT THE REAR OF THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY SHOWED MULTIPLE BARE WIRES INSIDE OF THE SEALED HOUSING, THE INSULATION HAD SIMPLY STARTED TO FLAKE OFF OF THE WIRES RENDERING ALL CENTERING AND LEVELING FUNCTIONS OF THE LIGHT INOPERABLE. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH BMW HEADLIGHTS, FOR ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTED DATA AND CASES PLEASE REFERENCE THE FOLLOWING FORUM THREAD : HTTPS://WWW.BIMMERFEST.COM/THREADS/

I WAS TRAVELING TO A LOCAL STORE. MY CAR SUDDENLY JERKED,RADIO TURNED OFF WHILE LIGHTS ON DASH FLICKERED ON AND OFF. I LOST POWER TEMPORARILY AND I BEGAN SMELLING WIRES. I ALSO NOTICE A 'POP' AS I ATTEMPTED TO PULL OVER AND NOTICE NO BRAKE OPERATIONS SO I HAD TO COAST TO A STOP WITH MY 2 YEAR OLD IN THE BACKSEAT. I STARTED MY FLASHERS AND TURN OFF CAR TO SEARCH FOR SMELL. IT SEEMS LIKE DASH BUT I DIDN'T SEE ANY SMOKE. I GET BACK IN CAR AND ATTEMPT TO START IT AND NOTHING! I STILL HAVE POWER SO I WAS CONFUSED, I CHECK TRUNK ULTIMATELY AND REMOVE BATTERY COVER AND THIS IS WHAT I FOUND! THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND VERY DANGEROUS. I GOT THE CAR TOWED HOME AND WON'T DRIVE UNTIL IT IS REPAIRED OBVIOUSLY. I AM UPSET BUT EVEN HAPPIER ME AND MY KID MADE IT HOME SAFELY, SOMETHING KEEPS TELLING ME TODAY WAS A BLESSING WE MADE IT.
HAVE HAD THE CAR LESS THAN TWO MONTHS AND I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING NON-SAFE SITUATIONS. THE CAR JUST ONE DAY SUDDENLY DOESN?T COME OUT OF PARK. IT FINALLY GOT OUT OF PARK AND WHEN I TRY TO DRIVE AND IT REVERSES AND MAKE ALOT OF NOISE AND WHEN I SOMETIMES TRY TO REVERSE. IT DRIVES. THIS IS NOT SAFE. I?VE NEARLY GOTTEN MYSELF KILLED DUE TO THIS FAULTY BAD CAR. I TRIED TO CALL FOR A TRADE OR A REFUND AND THE COMPANY WAS RUDE TO ME. THIS CAR TAKES MY GIRLFRIEND AND I TO WORK AND THIS IS THE ONLY CARE WE HAVE. IT HASN'T BEEN A YEAR AND THE CAR HAS SO MANY ISSUES DOWN TO CAR NOT READING GEARS, BAD SPARK PLUGS , HOLE UNDERNEATH, FAULTY AIRBAGS, WINDOWS NOT WORKING, TIRE PRESSURES UNSAFE AND MUCH MORE THAT NO ONE WOULD WANT TO EXPERIENCE. *TR
Intermittently on startup/ignition, car electrical shuts completely down. No power to anything and key fob becomes locked in the ignition. After a few minutes the electrical comes back on on its own. This usually only happens in park on startup, however on one occasion, the electrical shut off for about 5 seconds as I was driving 70 MPH on the highway. Car went totally dark and I was fortunately able to control the wheel until power came back.
AC STOP WORKING AND A BURN WIRING SMELL CAME OUT
2006 BMW 325I THE BIODEGRADABLE WIRING HAS DETERIORATED CAUSING THE DIRECTIONAL AND HEADLAMPS TO FAIL RESULTING IN EXPENSIVE REPAIRS AND JEOPARDIZES THE SAFETY OF THE DRIVERS OF THE VEHICLE WHILE IN USE.
WHEN THE IBS IS PLUGGED IN IT DRAINS THE BATTERY FAST , THEN IT WON'T START UNLESS I UNPLUG THE B+ BLUE PLUG , THEN PLUG THE B+ CABLE BACK IN AFTER STARTED SO THE VALVETRONIC ECCENTRIC SHAFT MOTOR HAS POWER , OTHERWISE IT GOES INTO LIMP MODE WITHOUT IT PLUGGED IN , I THOUGHT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS BUT IT STARTS ON THE 2007 E90 I GUESS MINE IS A 2006 .
COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER, SHUT CAR OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES, WHEN TRYI G TO RESTART VEHICLE NOTICED ZERO POWER TO ANY COMPONENTS
I HAVE A RECALL ON THE HEATER DEVICES, NOT QUIT SURE WHAT THAT IS BUT IT CAN CAUSE MY ENGINE TO OVERHEAT AND CATCH FIRE. I'VE ALREADY REPLACED THE COOLANT SYSTEM BECAUSE OF OVER HEATING I'M VERY SCARED OF DRIVING THE CAR. I WOULD LIKE TO GET IT FIXED A SOON AS POSSIBLE, ITS NICE CAR AND I'VE PUT A LOT OF MONEY IN IT ALREADY, TRYING TO KEEP IT ON THE ROAD,ITS MY WORK TRANSPORTATION.
My car was just sitting in my driveway and my roommate noticed she said is there is your car supposed to be on fire and we went out there had to break the windows and it was already on fire and totally ruined from any repair. I didn't receive a recall until a year after it had already caught on fire. The car is totaled in my backyard. And is beyond repair because of the fire
