CAR PULLS VIOLENTLY TO THE RIGHT UNDER *INITIAL WET BRAKING*, AT ALL SPEEDS. SUBSEQUENT BRAKING TRACKS STRAIGHT AHEAD, UNTIL BRAKES GET WET AGAIN. NO STANDING WATER, NO TIRE TREAD OR INFLATION ISSUES, NO ALIGNMENT ISSUES. THIS PROBLEM IS APPARENTLY WELL-KNOWN IN THE INTERNET FORUMS, AND HAS BEEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS, YET BMW HAS NEITHER ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM, OR MADE A FIX AVAILABLE. THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DEADLY PROBLEM, RESULTING IN UNPREDICTABLE BEHAVIOR AT THE WORST-POSSIBLE MOMENT. *CONTACT ME FOR MORE INFORMATION!* PROBLEM HAS BEEN OBSERVED SIGN DAY ONE WITH THIS CAR -- BUT ONLY IN WET WEATHER (SO, IT SURFACED AGAIN LAST NIGHT, DURING THE FIRST RAINSTORM OF THE SEASON).
SUDDEN UNEXPECTED LOSS OF POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEED DUE TO DEFECTIVE ECCENTRIC SHAFT SENSOR
COOLANT / WATER PUMP HAS FAILED AT 57,000 MILES. THE PUMP SEIZED, WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT AND SHUT OFF AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. A WATER PUMP SHOULD NOT FAIL AT SUCH AN EARLY AGE. INTERNET SEARCHES INDICATE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON 3-SERIES (EXTREMELY EARLY FAILURE OF THE WATER PUMP). THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL WRECK COMING INTO CONTACT WITH A BOX TRUCK AT A DEAD STOP FROM 55MPH, THE DRIVER AIRBAG DEPLOYED, BECOMING PUNCTURED AND PARTICLES FLYING ALL OVER AND CUTTING UP MY ARM. THIS CAUSING THE AIRBAG TO BE COMPLETELY FLAT. THANK GOD FOR THE WORKING SEAT BELT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 335I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A PREMATURE LEAK AND STRONG FUMES OF FUEL COMING FROM THE VEHICLE, WHICH PROGRESSED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED NO REMEDY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
PURCHASED CAR AUGUST 29 2015. ON SEPTEMBER 15 2015 AFTER FUELING AND TURNING ON CAR THE BRAKE, ABS, TRACTION CONTROL AND SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED. WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE VEHICLE OUT OF GAS STATION PARKING LOT. LIGHTS WENT AWAY BUT INTERMITTENTLY WOULD COME ON WHILE DRIVING WHICH CAUSED SUDDEN INABILITY TO ACCELERATE WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IT CANNOT SWITCH AND GEAR AND IS BEING PUSHED BACK.WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE RESR LIGHTS STOP WORKING SO DRIVERS BEHIND COULD CRASH INTO ME BECAUSE OF SUDDEN DECREASE IN SPEED.TOOK TO DEALER SEPTEMBER 22. SAID THEY FIXED CONTROL MODULE. BUT PROBLEM CONTINUES
DOOR FAILED, UNABLE TO OPEN FROM INSIDE, OUTSIDE OR THROUGH KEY. I AM AN R&D ENGINEER AND UPON EVALUATING THE FAILURE MODE OF THE DOOR I AM CONCERNED AT A OPERATORS ABILITY TO ESCAPE A VEHICLE THAT IS DISABLED AND IN A DANGEROUS STATE. I WOULD BE SURPRISED F THIS DEFECT CANNOT BE LINKED TO FATALITIES.
CAR WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY, DROVE IT EARLIER THAT DAY FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, PARKED IT 3PM AND 2 HOURS LATER NEIGHBOR CAME KNOCKING SAYING CAR WAS SMOKING. RAN OUTSIDE AND CAR WAS ON FIRE. INTERIOR WAS SMOKED OUT. KEYLESS ENTRY WAS DEAD. BROKE THE WINDOW TO GET THE CAR OPEN, TURNED THE GARDEN HOSE ON TO TRY AND STOP THE CAR FROM BURNING. CALLED 911 FIRE DEPT ARRIVED AND HAD TO PRY THE TRUCK OPEN BECAUSE IT WAS STILL SIZZLING. FIRE DEPT CUT THE BATTERY CABLES AND SAID IT LOOKED LIKE AN ELECTRICAL FIRE UNDER THE DASH. GLOVE BOX AND PASSENGER SIDE FRONT SEAT WAS COMPLETELY CHARRED. AFTER 22 DAYS, A BMW ENGINEER AND ALLSTATE INS CALLED IT A TOTAL LOSS. BMW ENGINEERS REPORT STILL HAS NOT BEEN PUBLISHED. TOTAL LOSS ON A PARKED VEHICLE; CLEARLY THIS VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE AND A DESIGN FAULT. MANUFACTURERS ARE SUPPOSE TO ENGINEER CARS TO WITHSTAND FIRES.
PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME WHEN I STARTED THE CAR, THEN IT SHOWS LIKE PASSENGER AIRBAG IS OFF. FOR THE PAST 2 WEEKS THE LIGHT WAS COMING INTERMITTENTLY, BUT NOW IT IS ALWAYS ON WHEN I START THE CAR AND IT SHOWS PASSENGER AIRBAG IS OFF. I SEARCHED ONLINE ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND WENT TO MECHANIC. THEY GAVE ME ERROR CODE "93C3" WHICH IS PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG SENSOR IS NOT WORKING IN THE SEAT AND IT WILL COST AROUND 1300$ TO FIX THIS ISSUE. BMW HAD A RECALL ABOUT THIS ISSUE BUT IT DOESN'T COVER 2008 MODELS. I HAVE A SPORT SEAT, AND WHEN I CHECKED ONLINE, I SAW IN THE FORUMS THAT LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THIS IS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM AND BMW SHOULD RECALL EFFECTED CARS. BECAUSE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE...
ON THE MORNING OF JULY 25TH, 2015, MY FRIEND WENT TO PICK ME UP FROM NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN MY 2008 BMW 328 XI COUPE. MY CAR HAS BEEN PARKED AT HER HOME IN FAIRFIELD, NJ FOR APPROXIMATELY 7 DAYS WHILE I WAS AWAY ON BUSINESS. SHE DROVE MY CAR TO THE AIRPORT FROM FAIRFIELD, WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 35 MINUTES. THEN ON OUR WAY BACK TO MY HOUSE, ABOUT 30 MINUTES INTO OUR RIDE, THE SUNROOF EXPLODED DURING THE DRIVE. I HAD THE INSIDE PIECE, CLOSED WHICH SAVED ANY PERSONAL INJURY FROM THE GLASS. I BROUGHT IT TO BMW TO GET THE WINDOW FIXED AND THE TOTAL COST WAS APPROXIMATELY $1,250. BMW SAYS THAT IT WAS NOT A MANUFACTURER DEFAULT, BUT ON A CAR THAT HAS ONLY 53K MILES, IT WAS RATHER ODD FOR THAT SUNROOF TO JUST EXPLODE. ALSO TO NOTE, THAT DURING OUR DRIVE BACK BECAUSE IT WAS 7AM ON A SATURDAY MORNING, THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS OR TRUCKS AROUND US THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THIS DAMAGE WHICH IS WHAT BMW SUGGESTED.
I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AROUND 60 MPH SPEED AND SUDDENLY MY CAR COULDN'T SPEED ANY FURTHER AND LUCKY FOR ME I WAS DRIVING NEXT TO CENTER DIVIDE AND COULD PULL IT, I WAS ABLE TO AVOID ANY ACCIDENT. IT WAS PEAK TRAFFIC TIME ( EARLY MORNING COMMUTE ). SO I BELIEVE THIS NEEDS TO LOOKED INTO THAT IF THERE WAS A RECALL WHICH WAS NOT APPLIED TO ALL THE MAKE, MODELS. AFTER DIAGNOSIS IT WAS FOUND THE ISSUE WAS WITH FUEL PUMP ON WHICH THERE ARE CERTAIN RECALLS ON THE NEWER MODELS BUT FOR 2008 MODEL THEY WAS NONE I CONFIRMED WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE.
ELECTRONIC DOOR LOCKS FAILED TO UNLOCK THUS TRAPPING MYSELF IN THE CAR. NO MECHANICAL OVERRIDE EXISTS TO MANUALLY UNLOCK THE DOORS. I HAD TO ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN AND CLIMB OUT THROUGH THE WINDOW. THE 4 DOOR SEDAN HAS SMALL WINDOWS AND I HURT MYSELF (PULLED MUSCLES AND JOINTS) CLIMBING OUT. IF THE WINDOWS FAILED (THEY DID NOT), I WOULD HAVE HAD TO BREAK THE WINDOWS AND THEN CLIMB OUT. ELDERLY OR HANDICAPPED OCCUPANTS WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET OUT! ANY POWER FAILURE WILL TRAP OCCUPANTS SINCE NO MECHANICAL OVERRIDE EXISTS!
2008 BMW 335I COUPE PURCHASED ON JULY 15TH, 2013 FROM CARMAX. CURRENTLY DRIVABLE BUT HAS MAJOR MECHANICAL PROBLEMS. THE EXTENDED SERVICE CONTRACT IS STILL UNDER COVERAGE AND IS VALID AT THE BMW DEALER OR ANY CARMAX NATIONWIDE. WHEN CARMAX CAN'T FIX THE CAR IT'S HAULED OVER TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR AND A CHECK WOULD BE WRITTEN BY MAXCARE TO THE BMW DEALER. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT I'VE HAD TO TAKE THIS VEHICLE IN FOR MAJOR REPAIRS SEVERAL TIMES AND I'M NOT COUNTING MAINTENANCE VISITS. MOST OF THESE MAJOR REPAIRS WERE REPETITIVE MAJOR JOBS SUCH AS OIL LEAKS, FUEL PRESSURE SYSTEM, INJECTORS. AT ONE TIME MY CAR PING PONGED BETWEEN CARMAX AND BMW FOR CLOSE TO 2 MONTHS. CONSIDER THE TIME I'VE OWNED THIS CAR FOR AND HOW LONG AND HOW MANY TIMES IT'S BEEN OUT OF MY POSSESSION. I WAS PAYING A CAR NOTE FOR A BMW BUT DRIVING AROUND IN A A BASE MODEL RENTAL CAR MOST OF THE TIME. I'VE GOT INVOICES/ESTIMATES WHERE THE CAR WENT IN FOR MAJOR REPAIR OR DIAGNOSIS DURING THESE DATES: 07/22/2013 05/30/2014 06/13/2014 07/01/2014 11/05/2014 06/25/2015 THE REPAIR INVOICE/ESTIMATE ON 11/05/2014 WAS THE BIGGEST ONE. I WAS VERY FRUSTRATED WITH THE AMOUNT OF WORK BEING DONE ON THE VEHICLE SO I GOT THE CAR APPRAISED TO SELL BACK TO CARMAX AND THEY TOLD ME $10,000 WHICH I THOUGHT WAS RIDICULOUS. THE WORK DONE ON THAT CAR AMOUNTED TO ALMOST $7,000 OR MORE JUST ON THAT ONE INVOICE WHICH IS 70% OF THE CAR VALUE. ALSO, WHILE THE CAR WAS IN THE SHOP I ACQUIRED THE HISTORY OF THE VEHICLE DIRECTLY FROM BMW. THE HISTORY STATED THAT THE CAR HAD OIL LEAK REPAIR AT THE PAN AND GASKET AND THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAD A LEAK IN 03/06/2013 AND THE MILEAGE FOR THIS RECORD WAS COMPLETELY OFF. AS YOU CAN SEE THE DATE OF THIS DIAGNOSIS WAS A FEW MONTHS PRIOR TO ME PURCHASING THE VEHICLE.
EXPERIENCED SAME PROBLEM NOTED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN # 14V176000. VANOS BOLT SHEARED OFF, CONNECTED TO THE INTAKE CAMSHAFT, THEN TIMING CHAIN BROKE AND CAME OFF.
AFTER A SCHEDULED SERVICE THE ELECTRONIC LOCKS ON THE DOORS WOULD NOT WORK. RETURNED THE CAR THE SAME DAY FOR A "FUSE" THAT HAD BLOWN. WITHIN A FEW MORE DAYS, THE DOORS WOULD NOT OPEN, AND REMAINED LOCKED. I HAD TO USE THE VALET/METAL KEY TO OPEN THE DRIVER DOOR AND WAS TOTALLY UNABLE TO OPEN ANY OTHER DOORS. NONE WOULD OPEN FROM INSIDE, OUTSIDE OR THE REMOTE FOB. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THEY SAID IT WOULD TAKE A DAY TO REPAIR AFTER A DAY OF TEARING THE DOORS APART AND DIAGNOSING THE PROBLEM. THEY WERE UNABLE TO GET PARTS AND TOOK SEVERAL DAYS TO REPAIR THE DOORS WITH NEW "LOCK ACTUATORS" THAT HAD ALL FAILED. WHY? HOW CAN THREE DOORS FAIL ALL AT THE SAME TIME? IT MUST BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM? DANGEROUS!!! THANK GOD I DID NOT HAVE TO DRIVE MY GRANDCHILDREN AROUND THAT WEEK. THE ONLY WAY TO GET INTO AND OUT OF THREE OF THE SEATS WOULD BE TO USE THE WINDOWS OR CLIMB OVER THE DRIVER SEAT/ CONSOLE. THIS IS SCARY AND DANGEROUS, TO NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN THE CAR DOOR. WHY HASN'T BMW HAD A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE? I'M OUT ALMOST $2K FOR THE REPAIRS!
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 335XI. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ENGINE MISFIRED AND FAILED TO RESPOND WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CASEY BMW LOCATED AT (12861 JEFFERSON AVE. NEWPORT NEWS. VA) WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL INJECTORS WERE DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION "REDUCED POWER " MESSAGE KEEPS COMING ON AND OFF , LOW ENGINE OIL MESSAGE KEEPS COMING ON EVEN THOUGH ITS GOOD ON OIL , THE STEERING WHEEL WAS HARD TO TURN WHILE I WAS DRIVING CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND THE STEERING WAS OK AFTER THAT. IT'S CURRENTLY BEING LOOKED AT MY THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED IT ONLY 3 MONTHS AGO.
AFTER THE CAR WAS SERVICED ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, THE AIR BAG LIGHT WENT ON. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER, HE SAID THE SENSORS ARE REALLY SENSITIVE ON THE BMWS. I RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT THIS YEAR AND MODEL HAD A RECALL ON AIRBAGS. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER THEY ASKED THAT I REFER THIS TO YOU GUYS BECAUSE MY PARTICULAR VIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I AM NOW CONSTANTLY DRIVING IN FEAR OF A AIRBAG MALFUNCTION.

THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REPAIR FOR OVER A YEAR. THE DEALER DID NOT GIVE A SPECIFIC DATE FOR WHEN THE PART WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER COULD NOT PROVIDE AN ESTIMATED DATE FOR WHEN THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WOULD RECEIVE THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
WHILE DRIVING AND EXITING A PARKING LOT, VEHICLE AUTO-LOCKS ENGAGED. DRIVER DOOR AUTO-LOCKED AND UNLOCKED REPEATEDLY ABOUT 6 TIMES; STOPPING IN THE LOCKED POSITION. ONCE ARRIVING HOME, DRIVER DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN WITH THE DOOR HANDLE OR THE INTERIOR UNLOCK BUTTON. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND REMOVED THE KEY FOB AND HAD TO UTILIZE THE KEY FOB TO LOCK AND UNLOCK THE DOOR. THE DRIVE DOOR WAS AT THIS POINT ON THE OPPOSITE POSITION OF ALL THE OTHER DOORS. WHEN THE DRIVER DOOR IS LOCK, THE PASSENGER DOORS ARE UNLOCKED AND VICE VERSA. THE NEXT DAY THE DRIVER DOOR WOULD OPEN WITH THE KEY, BUT NOT WITH THE KEY FOB. THIS IS OF GREAT CONCERN BECAUSE THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. LOOKING AT THE DATABASE AND ONLINE FORUMS, THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT HAS YET TO BE ADDRESSED.

VEHICLE 2008 BMW 335I LOST ALL POWER WHILE ACCELERATING ON HIGHWAY (APPROX. 55MPH). FORCED TO WEAVE THRU LANES / TRAFFIC TO A COMPLETE STOP ON SHOULDER OF ROAD. IN ADDITION, VEHICLE 2008 BMW 335I HAS ENGINE LIGHT ON DURING "COLD START". DURING COLD START VEHICLE STATES "REDUCED POWER, ENGINE MALFUNCTIONING". CAR DIAGNOSED: DIAGNOSIS <REPLACE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND LOW PRESSURE SENSOR>
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 328I. WHILE PARKED, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AND THE BATTERY AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY AND THE POSITIVE CONNECTION CABLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND ENGINE MALFUNCTION WAS DISPLAYED ACROSS THE MESSAGE BOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO ANOTHER INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE VALVE COIL, THE SPARK PLUGS, AND THE VALVE GASKET COVERS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT WAS AWARE OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V044000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,025. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL INJECTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,000.
THE DOORS WILL NOT UNLOCK. THE LIGHTS FLASH ON THE OUTSIDE BUT EVEN WHEN PUSHING THE UNLOCK BUTTON FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR THE DOORS STAY LOCKED. WIFE HAD TO EXIT MY CAR WAS BY CRAWLING OUT OF THE WINDOW. ABLE TO USE THE KEY FOR MANUAL UNLOCK OF DRIVER DOOR ONLY; GAS TANK DOOR REMAINS LOCKED SO I CANNOT PUT GAS IN MY CAR AND, THEREFORE, CANNOT DRIVE MY CAR. *TR
ABS SYSTEM FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER 20000 MILES. DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST $4800 TO FIX BUT THAT BMW WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS THAT PEOPLE WERE HAVING AND TYPICALLY OFFERED A BREAK ON THE COST OF THE PARTS AS A "GOODWILL" GESTURE. THIS SO CALLED "GOODWILL" WAS NOT OFFERED TO US AND WERE ADVISED THAT THE CAR COULD BE DRIVEN WITHOUT THE REPAIRS AS LONG AS WE REALIZED THAT WE "WERE DRIVING A CAR FROM THE '70S". HOW CAN YOU GARAGE KEEP A $52000 CAR AND HAVE SUCH A SYSTEM/SAFETY BREAKDOWN AFTER 20,000 MILES. IN ADDITION, HOW CAN A MANUFACTURER RECOGNIZE THIS FAILURE IN THE FORM OF "GOODWILL" GESTURES UNTIL THEY TIRE OF DOING SO? PASSENGER SAFETY RESTRAIN SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS, WHEN A PASSENGER IS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, THE SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS. THIS MEANS THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY SHOULD THERE BE A CRASH. THIS VERY ISSUE IS A CAUSE OF A RECALL BY BMW IN 2008, BUT THIS MODEL IS NOT CURRENTLY COVERED DESPITE THIS BEING A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL.

THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER AIR BAGS DEPLOYED WITH FORCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIR. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAIULRE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH IN AN AREA WHERE THERE WAS NO PULL OFF AND A BLIND TURN AND THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WAS WELL WITHIN THE NORMAL RANGE, AN OVERHEAT ENGINE LIGHT INDICATOR CAME ON AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER LEAVING US IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD OBSTRUCTED AROUND A TURN. THE TIME BETWEEN THE WARNING AND THE CAR LAST POWER WAS A FEW SECONDS WITH NO OTHER WARNING. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES, WE WERE ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND GET IT ABOUT 1/2 MILE, THUS REMOVING IT FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, AGAIN LOSING POWER WITH NO WARNING. A QUALIFIED CAR REPAIR CENTER SAID IT WAS A FAULTY WATER PUMP (THE CAR HAS 56,000) AND THEY SAID THAT MANY OTHER BMW OWNERS WITH MY TYPE OF CAR ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE; IN FACT THEY TOLD ME ANOTHER OWNER HAD THEIR CAR IN FOR REPAIR WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND BMW WAS NOT COOPERATING. I RESEARCHED BOTH COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE (WHICH CONFIRM THE SAME ISSUE) AS WELL AS BMW OWNER'S FORUMS WHICH LIKEWISE CONFIRM THE SAME ISSUE AS WELL. I CALLED BMW AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS AND UNFORTUNATE POSITION FOR BMW TO TAKE. NOT ONLY IS IT UNACCEPTABLE FOR BMW TO IGNORE A KNOWN WATER PUMP ISSUE THAT FAILS PREMATURELY, BUT THE CAR LOOSES POWER WITHOUT TIME TO REACT. AN OIL LEAK FROM THE TOP MOUNTED OIL FILTER HOUSING SPILLED ONTO THE RUBBER ACCESSORY BELT CAUSING IT TO OVERHEAT AND DISINTEGRATE. THE RESULT WAS A TOTAL LOSS OF ALL POWERS, MOST IMPORTANTLY THE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL CHARGING AND POWER STEERING. THIS OCCURRED AT HIGH SPEED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE. THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING CREATED A SITUATION WHERE THE AUTO WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. THE LOSS OF THE CHARGING SYSTEM, ALTERNATOR NOT CHARGING, CAUSED AN EVENTUAL COMPLETE SHUTDOWN OF POWER AND SHUTDOWN OF THE ENGINE LEAVING ME ON THE SIDE OF A HIGHWAY. THIS WAS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR, BUT FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO AVOID A COLLISION. THIS OCCURRED AT ONLY A 65,000 MILE ODOMETER READING. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THE MECHANIC REPLACED THREE OF THE SIX HIGH PRESSURE CYLINDERS THAT MALFUNCTIONED. AT SOME POINT, THE OTHER THREE CYLINDERS MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,138.
ELECTRONIC DOOR LOCKS HAVE STOPPED WORKING ON TWO OCCASIONS NOW. THE FIRST WHEN OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE THAT LATER REQUIRED A NEW FUSE. THE SECOND ON MARCH 5TH HAPPENED AFTER ENTERING VEHICLE, BUT 3 OF THE DOORS REMAINED LOCK, AND MY ELDERLY FATHER COULD NOT GET INTO THE VEHICLE. THE DASHBOARD LOCKING BUTTON THEN SUBSEQUENTLY LOCKED THE DRIVER'S DOOR, AND UNLOCKING WAS SUBSEQUENTLY NOT POSSIBLE FOR ANY DOORS. IN EFFECT TRAPPED INSIDE THE VEHICLE, AND THE DOORS COULD NOT BE MANUALLY OPENED NOR ELECTRONICALLY. I WAS ABLE TO PASS THE MECHANICAL KEY THROUGH THE SUNROOF FOR ASSISTANCE IN OPENING THE DRIVER'S DOOR TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. MY CONCERN IS IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION (E.G. A CAR CRASH), THE OCCUPANTS WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE QUICKLY OR SAFELY. BOTH BMW AND NHTSA APPEAR TO BE AWARE OF THE ISSUE FROM OTHER POSTINGS, BUT NO RECALLS ISSUED. ON THE AFTERNOON OF NOVEMBER 10TH, WHILE DRIVING, A RED LIGHT WITH A PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEM MALFUNCTION MESSAGE LIT UP ON THE DASHBOARD. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY AND THEY SAID THEY HAD TO ORDER THE PART. THEY WERE UNABLE TO TURN THE LIGHT OFF, WHICH AFFECTED MY ABILITY TO RETRIEVE TIME AND TEMPERATURE ON THE DASHBOARD READER. THEY HAD TO ORDER THE PART, WHICH WAS REPLACED ON NOVEMBER 26TH. THE PART IS CALLED SOP BATTERY SAFETY TERMINAL (BATTERY CABLE PLUS POLE). I WAS TOLD THAT THE WIRES TESTED AS "BROKEN INTERMITTENTLY." I WAS TOLD THAT WHEN THIS BATTERY CABLE WORKS CORRECTLY IT WILL SHUT OFF THE GAS PUMP SO THAT THERE WAS NO DANGER OF FIRE. I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT DRIVING THE CAR EVEN WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE SEEMED TO BE ALL RIGHT, BECAUSE IF GAS LEAKED THE WHOLE CAR WOULD BE ON FIRE, NOT JUST THE PASSENGER SIDE. SINCE THERE WAS A RECALL OF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM, I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE ALSO RELATED. THE DEALER SAID HE HAD SEEN THIS BEFORE ON OTHER CARS BUT HE COULD NOT SAY HOW MANY. I AM UNABLE TO OPEN/UNLOCK THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. OTHER DOORS ARE FINE BUT I WOULD BE TRAPPED IN CASE OF FIRE OR ACCIDENT. DOOR DOES UNLOCK THROUGH MANUAL KEY (NOT FOB). *TR
THIS IS WELL-DOCUMENTED ON BMW FORUMS. THE ADAPTIVE DRIVER MEMORY LOGIC CAUSES A THROTTLE LAG OF UP TO 1 SECOND. THIS LAG CAN BE TEMPORARILY ELIMINATED BY RESETTING THE THROTTLE BODY ADAPTION. THE UNNECESSARY THROTTLE LAG CAUSES AN UNNECESSARY SAFETY HAZARD BY DELAYING THE CAR'S THROTTLE RESPONSE. BMW SHOULD ISSUE A SOFTWARE UPDATE THAT ALLOWS OWNERS TO PERMANENTLY DISABLE OR LOCK DOWN THE FEATURE. THE PROBLEM HAPPENS MAINLY WHEN THE CAR IS STOPPED AN IN-GEAR. WHEN THE DRIVER DEPRESSES THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE COMPUTER DELAYS THE SIGNAL TO THE THROTTLE BODY BY UP TO 1 SECOND. THIS DELAY INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF A COLLISION BY CAUSING AN THE CAR TO UNNECESSARILY RESPOND IN A MANNER THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE DRIVER'S INTENT. THERE IS A 5-STEP PROCEDURE THAT OWNERS CAN FOLLOW TO TEMPORARILY RESET THE THROTTLE BODY ADAPTION, BUT THE COMPUTER EVENTUALLY RE-LEARNS THE UNSAFE BEHAVIOR. BMW HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED IN SEVERAL BMW MODELS, ENGINES, AND MODEL YEARS, INCLUDING THE 328I, THE 528I, THE 750LI, AND OTHERS. IN MY CASE, I WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC AND ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE AND CHANGE LANES QUICKLY IN ORDER TO AVOID AN OBSTACLE. THE DRIVER BEHIND ME INTERPRETED THE CAR'S DELAY AS INACTION AND PERFORMED THE SAME MANEUVER, SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSING A REAR-END COLLISION WHEN ANOTHER CAR IN FRONT ALSO ACCELERATED AND MOVED INTO THE OTHER LANE AND CAUSED SEVERAL CARS TO STOP. IF MY CAR HAD RESPONDED APPROPRIATELY WHEN I APPLIED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE TOW TRUCK BEHIND ME MIGHT HAVE DELAYED HIS ACTION.
MOTOR MOUNT BOLTS BROKE WHILE TURNING OUT OF MY BANK PARKING LOT. CALLED DEALERSHIP. ADVISED NO RECALL NOTED. MY EXTENDED WARRANTY HAD ALSO ENDED. I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS. WHEN I WAS TOLD THAT MY DRIVER SIGNAL IS NOT WORKING, I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, I WAS INFORMED THAT NOT ONLY THE CONTACT BETWEEN THE LIGHT SOCKET AND ASSEMBLY WAS BURNED AND MELTED, BUT THERE WAS ALSO DAMAGE TO THE ASSEMBLY, SO I NEED TO CHANGE THE WHOLE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY, I WAS VERY SHOCKED, BECAUSE MY CAR ONLY HAS 27030 MILES, AND THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY WAS SUDDENLY BURNED. I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS AS THE WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH BOARD DID NOT SPECIFY WHICH LIGHT WAS IT FOR. I HAD NOTICED A MELTING PLASTIC SMELL FOR A FEW WEEKS BUT COULDN'T IDENTIFY THE SOURCE AND SHORTLY AFTER THIS MY HEADLIGHT BURNT OUT SO I WENT TO REPLACE THE BULB. BY THIS TIME, I NOTICED SMOKE COMING OUT OF MY HEADLIGHT MOUNT. UPON OPENING THE HEADLIGHT I NOTICED ALL OF THE WIRE SHIELDING HAD FALLEN OFF OF THE WIRES INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT MOUNT, CAUSING THE WIRES TO ARK AND MELT. UPON COMPARING AGAINST THE OTHER HEADLIGHT, I FOUND THE SAME THING- ALL OF THE WIRE SHIELDING HAD FALLEN OFF. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, SIMPLY DUE TO HOW HOT AND DRY THIS MODEL GETS UNDER THE HOOD AND THE HEADLIGHTS BEING SEALED. THEY SAID IT'S USUALLY COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, HOWEVER NOT IN THE CASE OF MY VEHICLE'S MILEAGE. SINCE THE HEADLIGHT IS A SEALED UNIT, YOU CANNOT ACCESS THE WIRES TO REPLACE THEM AND CANNOT PURCHASE A HARNESS, THE WHOLE UNIT MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $800 EACH. I GOOGLED AND FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME ISSUE. UPON CONTACTING BMW HQ DIRECTLY, THEY SAID IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE, BUT NOT COVERED, AND GOT BACK TO ME SEVERAL WEEKS LATER OFFERING TO PAY $200 TOWARD THE COST OF THE $1600 REPAIR IF I HAD IT DONE AT THE DEALER, OR $2000 TOWARD THE PURCHASE OF A NEW BMW. *TR
