AFTER HAVING BEEN REPAIRED SEVERAL TIMES UNDER THE POWER STEERING RECALL, THE PROBLEMS HAVE BECOME WORSE. THE CAR STALLS, LIGHTS FLICKER, THE LOW FUEL MESSAGE WILL FLASH DESPITE THERE BEING GAS IN THE CAR, THE POWER STEERING IS COMPLETELY INOPERABLE, THE SPEEDOMETER RESTS ON ZERO AT ALL TIMES, VARIOUS WARNING LIGHTS ARE ALWAYS ILLUMINATED AND THE CAR STRUGGLES TO GET OUT OF SECOND GEAR (IT IS AN AUTOMATIC.) THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER GAVE DIAGNOSTIC CODES INDICATING POSSIBLE ISSUES WITH THE BODY CONTROL MODULE AND ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE AND STATED THAT IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER THE RECALL, BUT THAT THE POWER STEERING MOTOR HAD AGAIN GONE OUT, BUT THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT. THE CAR HAS STALLED NUMEROUS TIMES ON -RAMPS TO HIGHWAYS AND IN INTERSECTIONS AND HAS BECOME TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE, BUT CHEVROLET HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND ONLY TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS EXIST, THOUGH THEY WILL NOW ACKNOWLEDGE THEM WHEN ASKED, AS THOUGH THE PROBLEM IS NOT A DANGEROUS ONE. THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF THE CAR IS FAULTY AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AS IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
I WAS IN TOWN WITH MY 5 MONTH OLD BABY AND MY DOOR HANDLE MESSED UP. I HAD PARKED, AND EXITED THE CAR AND WENT AROUND TO PASSENGER SIDE OF CAR TO OPEN THE DOOR AND GET MY SON BUT THE DOOR WOULDN'T OPEN. I LOCKED AND UNLOCKED THE CAR DOOR AND IT WAS STILL STUCK. IT WAS AS THOUGH THE DOOR HANDLE WASN'T LATCHED TO ANYTHING. IT WAS JUST THERE, IT WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING. I BEAT AND BANG ON THE DOOR FOR ALMOST AN HOUR UNTIL THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR FINALLY OPENED. THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR STILL WON'T OPEN, INSIDE OR OUT. THIS CAR NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. I HAVE READ OF MANY OTHERS WITH SAME PROBLEM. MY CHILD WHO IS ONLY 5 MONTHS OLD WAS SCREAMING AND I COULDN'T GET TO HIM. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY TRAGIC HAD IT BEEN HOT OUTSIDE. SOMEONE NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND UPON EXITING, THE FRONT DRIVER'S DOOR WOULD NOT CLOSE PROPERLY. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY SHUT THE DOOR AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE SAME DOOR WOULD INTERMITTENTLY FAIL TO OPEN FROM THE INSIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR TO BE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 113,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000.

A POWER STEERING SERVICE LIGHT ALSO ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DURING THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP AND THE WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH INTO AN INTERSECTION, THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AND THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMALLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON A SEPARATE OCCASION. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000.
MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT CUTS OFF ON ME WHENEVER I AM ON HILLS, GOING THROUGH CURVES, STOPPING AT RED LIGHTS OR STOP SIGN AND SOMETIME WHEN I AM SIMPLY DRIVING DOWN THE STREET. IF I AM IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IT CUTS OFF ON THE HIGHWAY AS WELL. ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK MY POWER STEERING WILL GO COMPLETELY OUT WHILE I AM DRIVING. I JUST READ IN THE NEWSPAPER THAT IF YOU ONLY HAVE THE ONE KEY THAT IT WILL NOT CUT OFF BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE EITHER. MY CAR CUTS OFF WEATHER I USE MU KEY ON THE KEY RING OR THE KEY THAT I HAVE THAT IS NOT ON THE KEY CHAIN. NOT KNOWING WHAT WAS CAUSING THE CAR TO CUT OFF ALL OF THE TIME, I HAVE CHANGED THE BATTERY, IGNITION SWITCH, AND THE THROTTLE SOMETHING OR ANOTHER. I HAVE INVESTED A LOT OF MONEY INTO THIS CAR TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WOULD VIOLENTLY JERK WHILE MAKING TURNS AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD SEIZE. NEITHER A DEALER NOR A MECHANIC WAS NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 168,267.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE STOPPED, THE CONTACT PLACED THE GEAR SHIFTER IN PARK AND NOTICED THAT THE INDICATOR WAS STILL ILLUMINATED IN DRIVE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF BUT WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR RUNNING LIGHTS AND ALL OF THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 78,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN TRAVELING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL INTERMITTENTLY. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND BECAME HARD TO STEER. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND STOP AS THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE ON THE HIGHWAY AT THE TIME. I'VE THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE PART BUT WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER THEY SEEM TO THINK THEY HAVE ALREADY FIXED THE PROBLEM BUT I WILL BRING IT IN TOMORROW. AFTER READING ALL THE STORIES ABOUT THIS MODEL ITS A WONDER GM HAS DONE NOTHING ABOUT IT. I WILL HAVE TO PAY ALMOST 100 DOLLAR FOR THEM TO JUST LOOK AT THE CAR. LORDS ONLY KNOWS WHAT ITS GOING TO TAKE FOR THEM TO ATTEMPT TO REPAIR IT FOR GOOD. I'M NOT REALLY SURE ITS WORTH FIXING BUT WHO CAN JUST GO OUT AND BUY A NEW CAR BECAUSE GM SOLD JUNK IN THE FIRST PLACE. *TR
WHEN PULLING OUT OF OUR DRIVE WAY THIS MORNING, THE CAR SUDDENLY BEGAN TO JERK, I THOUGHT IT WAS NOTHING. THEN AS I PULLED TO THE STOP SIGN, THE CAR THEN JERKED AGAIN AND SOMEWHAT SLOWED DOWN AND THE LOW BRAKE FLUID LIGHTS BEGAN TO FLASH AND A DINGING NOISE CAME ON AS WELL. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE CAR BACK INTO OUR DRIVEWAY BUT BARELY COULD BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL WAS SO STIFF IT WOULD HARDLY BUDGE. *TR
POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING AND THEN STARTS WORKING SOMETIMES WHEN DRIVING. POWER STEERING PUMP WAS CHANGED BY CHEVROLET DEALER IN MARCH, 2011. BY MAY, 2011, SAME PROBLEM OF POWER STEERING WORKING ERRATICALLY RESUMED. DEALER LOOKED AT IT AGAIN ON 9/30/11 AND WAS UNABLE TO FIX. ON OCTOBER 18, 2011, A NEAR ACCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN THE POWER STEERING STARTED WORKING DURING A SHARP TURN AT 25 MPH WHILE ENTERING AN ON RAMP. THE FORCE IT TAKES TO TURN THE WHEEL AT THAT SPEED IS ESTIMATED AT 30 LBS AND WHILE APPLYING THAT FORCE IN THE SHARP TURN AND THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY STARTED WORKING, RESULTING IN MY MAKING A SIGNIFICANT TURN TO THE RIGHT AND ALMOST RUNNING OFF THE RAMP AND DOWN A 15' EMBANKMENT. THE VEHICLE IS TOO HAZARDOUS TO DRIVE. *TR
I OWN A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT, THE POWER STEERING AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE THEN BEGAN TO JERK AND BECOME DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V073000 (STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM); BUT THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THERE NO RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE, APPARENTLY THEY WAS BASE ON THE VEHICLE VIN # INSTEAD OF MODEL/MADE/YEAR OF THE CAR. THE DEALER TOLD ME I NEED TO REPLACE STEERING COLUMN WHICH WILL COST ME CLOSE TO $1000 W/PART, LABOR & TAXES. PICKUP MY CAR ON THE SAME DAY LATE AFTERNOON, WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME WITH NO INCIDENT. HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED THE NEXT DAY, AGAIN TOWED THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS AWAITING FURTHER INSPECTION AT THE DEALERSHIP, IN THE MEANTIME I'M DRIVING THE RENTAL THAT WAS PROVIDED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THIS IS MFG DEFECTED PROBLEM, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAID TO FIX THE STEERING COLUMN. *TR
THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED AT ABOUT 9:30PM ON THE NIGHT OF 9/21/11. THE FAILURE OF THE AIR BAGS AND STEERING OCCURRED ON NJ STATE ROUTE 78 WEST, ABOUT 50 FEET BEFORE THE RAMP TO ROUTE 31. THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC CONGESTION ON THE ROAD, AND VISIBILITY WAS GOOD. I WAS FULLY AWAKE, AND WAS FAMILIAR WITH DRIVING THIS ROUTE ON A DAILY BASIS. WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT HOME FROM COLLEGE, MY VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING RIGHT BEFORE I GOT ONTO THE RAMP. KEEP IN MIND THAT MY VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING COMPLETELY STRAIGHT AT THE TIME WHEN THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON, AND ABOUT HALF A SECOND LATER MY VEHICLE BEGAN SPINNING TO THE RIGHT. BEFORE I COULD SLOW DOWN OR STRAIGHTEN THE CAR, MY VEHICLE HAD ROTATED ALMOST A FULL 90 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT. AT THIS POINT THE RAMP HAD STARTED, AND THUS TO AVOID HITTING THE GUARD RAIL ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD I MADE A STRONG EFFORT TO TURN THE WHEEL TO THE LEFT AND STRAIGHTEN MY CAR. I SUCCEEDED IN TURNING THE WHEEL TO THE LEFT, AND THUS STRAIGHTENED MY CAR OUT UNTIL MY CAR THEN STARTED TO SPIN TO THE LEFT, AND BOUNCED OFF OF THE GUARD RAIL ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RAMP AT APPROXIMATELY 40MPH. A COUPLE SECONDS ELAPSED FROM WHEN THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON, TO WHEN MY CAR HIT THE GUARD RAIL. AFTER THE CAR BOUNCED OFF OF THE GUARD RAIL, IT CONTINUED TO SPIN FOR ANOTHER 270 DEGREES, AND CAME TO REST ON THE NARROW SHOULDER, PARALLEL TO THE ROAD. THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY, AND AFTER I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON, THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT HAD DISAPPEARED ENTIRELY. ALTHOUGH I DROVE THE CAR OFF OF THE RAMP, AS I WAS INSTRUCTED TO BY POLICE, THE CAR WAS TOTALED DUE TO SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE BODY AND FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE INCIDENT I DISCOVERED THE PREVIOUS RECALL ON THE POWER STEERING MOTOR, HOWEVER WHEN I CHECKED WITH THE DEALER, THEIR RECORDS INDICATED THAT THE RECALL WAS FULFILLED. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND SEVERAL WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED AFTER THIRTY MINUTES AND RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON FIVE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CPU WAS FAULTY AND REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,500.
MY 05 CHEVY COBALT WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGH WAY GOING ABOUT 70MPH SWITCH LANES AND MY POWER STEERING GOT OUT OF CONTROL AND GOT INTO A WRECK HIT SOME ONE BESIDE ME. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING A RECURRING FAILURE IN WHICH THE POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL AND CAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL TO SEIZE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INITIALLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V073000 (STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 89,000.
RANDOMLY, CHIMES SOUND, GAUGES ON INSTRUMENT PANEL CYCLE TO ZERO AND BACK, POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT, FUEL LOW WARNING SHOW, SOMETIMES THEFT LIGHT COMES ON AS DOES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. ELECTRICAL ASSIST TO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS LOST RESULTING IN HARD SHIFTS. MUST MANUALLY SHIFT INTO 1ST GEAR WHEN STOPPING TO AVOID ENGINE STALLING. PARKING CAR SEEMS TO FIX/ALLOW CAR TO RESET. HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES OVER PAST TWO YEARS. HAD MECHANIC LOOK AT IT FIRST TIME. SAID EVERY COMPUTER ON THE CAR HAD TO BE RESET TO THE TUNE OF $100. RECURRED TWO DAYS LATER. FIXED ITSELF BEFORE TAKING IT BACK IN. NOW I JUST LIVE WITH THE PROBLEM BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO LET THESE GUYS TROUBLE SHOOT AND FIX THINGS THAT ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. AM HAVING THE POWER STEERING RECALL DONE TOMORROW HOPING THAT IT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM BUT APPARENTLY IT DOESN'T. PROBLEM OCCURRENCE IS TOTALLY RANDOM. SOMETIMES THERE IS 6 MONTHS BETWEEN EPISODES, SOMETIMES WEEKS, DAYS. IT IS REALLY ACTING UP AFTER THE HEAVY RAINS OF IRENE. *TR
BOUGHT THE CAR ON 08/03/2011 WITH 40,933 MILES ON IT. THE STEERING COLUMN WAS DEFECTIVE AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE (FOUND OUT AFTER THE FACT). HAD THAT REPAIRED AT LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP BETWEEN 8/13/2011 AND 8/16/2011(I CAN'T FIND THE RECEIPT FOR THE MILEAGE AT TIME OF REPAIR). ON 8/18/2011, RECALL REPLACED STEERING MOTOR FAILED. THE ONLY REASON WE MADE IT HOME WITHOUT A WRECK WAS THAT WE WERE EXITING THE HEAVILY TRAFFIC URBAN AREA HEADING FOR OUR RURAL HOME. AM CURRENTLY REFUSING TO DRIVE THE CAR AGAIN AND SEEKING RESOLUTION TOMORROW MORNING. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THE STEERING IN THIS VEHICLE WILL NEVER BE RELIABLE. TOTAL OF 3 STEERING FAILS ON THIS CAR IN 41,581 TOTAL MILES.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AS THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 31,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 71,155.
I HAVE A 2005 COBALT THAT HAS LESS THEN 70,000KM ON IT AND HAVE RECENTLY BEEN HEARING A LOUD CLUNKING COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE CAR. I HAVE JUST HAD A LICENSED MECHANIC LOOK AT THE CAR AND WAS INFORMED THAT MY FRONT REAR CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS ARE COMPLETELY GONE AND THE CAR IS NOW A HAZARD TO DRIVE TILL IT CAN BE FIXED. WITH SUCH LOW KMS THE MECHANIC HAD NO REASON OR IDEA AS TO WHY THEY WOULD BE SO FAR GONE. I WAS ADVISED THAT IF THE CAR WAS DRIVEN ANY FURTHER, THE TIRES COULD FALL OF AND THE CAR WOULD CRASH. *TR
THIS SUBMISSION IS AN ADDENDUM TO THE REPORT THAT I SUBMITTED ON AUG 15, 2011; REFERENCE NUMBER 10419491 WITH THE ATTACHMENTS THAT INCLUDE THE POLICE REPORT, MAY STATEMENT AND PHOTOS. I SUBMITTED MY REPORT TWO DAYS AFTER THE ACCIDENT. NOW, AFTER READING THE NEWS ARTICLES AND THE GM STATEMENTS REGARDING THE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH, IT IS APPARENT THAT WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A STEERING MALFUNCTION (PER THE RECALLS I RECEIVED AND THE STATEMENTS MADE TO ME BY GM REPRESENTATIVES) WAS CLEARLY THE IGNITION SWITCH. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT 60 MPH MY DASH LIGHTS TURNED ON, I IMMEDIATELY LOST STEERING CONTROL (I COULD NOT TURN MY STEERING WHEEL) AND SWERVED HAD TO THE LEFT CRASHING INTO THE GUARD RAIL. I WAS BELTED IN SO AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM (I WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE FROM THE CRASH SITE) I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A CERVICAL SPRAIN, MULTIPLE CUTS AND BRUISES, SPRAINED ANKLE AND KNEE. THE 05 COBALT, REGULARLY SERVICED BY THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS BOUGHT CRASHED AFTER GOING OUT OF CONTROL WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCHED OFF ON THE INTERSTATE AT 60 MPH. THE STEERING LOCKED, THE ABS DID NOT FUNCTION, WHEN IT CRASHED INTO THE GUARD RAIL THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE ONLY WARNING WAS THE DASH WARNING LIGHTS ALL LIGHTING UP AND THE ALARM SOUNDS. THE ONE SECOND OR SO DID NOT ALLOW ANY CHANCE TO THE DRIVER TO REACT BEFORE THE CRASH. AFTER THE ACCIDENT, WHEN THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED, WE WERE ADVISED TO CONTACT THE GM PERSON. THE GM PERSON WAS FRIENDLY AND NICE, BUT VERY FIRM IN STATING THAT WE NEEDED TO HAVE PROOF THAT THE CAR FAILED, RATHER THE DRIVER AT THE WHEEL. THE CARS COMPUTER WAS NOT ANALYZED BECAUSE THE WRECKING YARD DEMANDED OVER $700 TO TOW THE CAR OUT OF THE WRECKING YARD SO ANY INVESTIGATOR COULD LOOK OVER THE CAR. GM TOLD US THAT IT WAS OUR PROBLEM TO PAY THE BILL TO ALLOW THEIR INVESTIGATOR TO LOOK AT THE CAR. WE DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY. AFTER READING NUMEROUS COMMENTS ON THE NHTSA SITE AND BLOGS, PEOPLE NEVER HEARD A WORD FROM GM AFTER THEY RETRIEVED THE COMPUTER. THE SALIENT POINT IS THAT MANY OF THE OVER A THOUSAND COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE COBALT AND OTHER SIMILAR GM CARS THAT IDENTIFIED THE POWER STEERING AS THE PROBLEM THAT CAUSED A CRASH ARE WRONG. THE POWER STEERING WAS NOT THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH TURNED OFF. THE GM RECALLS ABOUT THE POWER STEERING PROBLEM HIDE THE FACT THAT THE IGNITION SWITCHES WERE TURNING OFF WHILE THE CAR WAS MOVING DOWN THE ROAD. WE KNOW THAT THE LACK OF POWER ASSIST ONLY AFFECT THE CAR AT A STOP OR VERY SLOW SPEEDS. MORE WARNING LIGHTS ARE TURNED ON, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, THEFT DETERRENT LIGHTS, WARNING CHIME ETC. THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER READS JUMP UP AND DOWN. I CAN'T ACCELERATE IT CONTINUOUSLY. NOISE CAN BE HEARD SOMETIMES. IT WILL COME TO A SUDDEN STOP AND THEN PICK UP SPEED AGAIN WHEN I AM DRIVING. IMAGINE I WAS DRIVING 70MPH ON A HIGHWAY! I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD IN THAT ONE MIGHT BE TRAPPED INSIDE OF THE CAR WITH NO QUICK MEANS OF EXIT. *TR

THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD NO MILEAGE OR SPEEDOMETER READING. I TOOK IT TO MR. TIRE WHICH WAS ABOUT 3 MILES AWAY. THEY PUT THE CAR ON A MACHINE AND FOUND MIL CODE U0101. THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS. I CALLED THE DEALER THE NEXT MORNING AND TOOK IT RIGHT OVER TO THEM. THEY HAD THE CAR FOR TWO DAYS AND FINALLY CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE TCM AND REPROGRAM IT, CLEAR THE CODES AND RETEST. THIS WAS GOING TO COST $500. I HAD TAKEN THIS CAR TO BOB BELL LAST JUNE WHEN I RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE. IT WAS REPAIRED. AFTER A FEW MONTHS I NOTICED THAT THREE OR FOUR TIMES THE SIGNAL CAME ON ABOUT BRAKES BUT THEN DISAPPEARED AND EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE. THEN THIS MONDAY THIS HAPPENED.

NOT SURE EXACTLY WHEN IT HAPPENED, BUT IT HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR YEARS NOW. I HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN DIAGNOSTICS, PARTS, AND LABOR TRYING TO FIX THE MYSTERY PROBLEM! I'M FED UP! IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN RANDOMLY AND FIX ITSELF RANDOMLY. SOMETIMES IT LASTS A COUPLE DAYS AND SOMETIMES LONGER THAN A COUPLE WEEKS. THE PROBLEM: MY CAR WILL LOSE POWER STEERING, IT STARTS SHIFTING REALLY HARD AND THE GAUGES INSIDE GET ALL SCREWED. OCCASIONALLY WHEN IT HAPPENS IT JUST WON'T SHIFT AT ALL. IT WILL STAY IN FIRST GEAR. THE INSIDE GAUGES: THE SPEEDOMETER WILL BOUNCE ALL OVER THE PLACE, NEVER STAYING STILL. THE RADIO WILL ALSO GET LOUD AND QUIET BY ITSELF. THE POWER LOCKS WOULD FRANTICALLY GO UP AND DOWN THEMSELVES, UNTIL I TOOK OUT THE SPARK PLUG FOR THOSE. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE WHEN THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT, NOT LIKE CARS THAT WERE BUILT WITHOUT IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. THE VERY HARD SHIFTING CANNOT BE GOOD FOR THE CAR AND IS DANGEROUS WHEN I AM DRIVING DURING WINTER MONTHS OR RAINY WEATHER. I LIVE IN MICHIGAN AND IT SNOWS A LOT. IT'S FUN TO WATCH YOUR CAR LOCK YOUR KEYS INSIDE RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. - PASSENGER SEAT HEATER BUTTON SUCKED INTO THE DASH AFTER BEING PRESSED USING A NORMAL AMOUNT OF FORCE. - BOTH SEAT HEATERS FAILED WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF EACH OTHER, FUSES AND CONNECTIONS ARE GOOD. - HEATER RANDOMLY LOSES TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND WON'T SWITCH BETWEEN ANY OF THE SETTINGS, THE HEATER WON'T STOP BLOWING HOT AIR IN YOUR FACE, EVEN WITH THE AC ON, AND THE COLDEST SETTING. - DRIVER SIDE DOOR RANDOMLY WON'T ENGAGE FROM THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE HANDLE WHILE UNLOCKED, AND IF IT IS LOCKED, THE KEY DOES NOTHING. IN A CRASH, IT MAY MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. - DRIVER'S SIDE TOP CORNER WINDSHIELD SEAL FAILED. COULD LEAD TO WATER IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, AND FIRES. - CRUISE CONTROL WON'T REENGAGE AFTER BRAKING. THE FIX FOR THIS IS TO PUSH THE CC BUTTON (TURNING IT OFF) AND PRESSING THE BRAKES. IT RESETS THE CC, AND WILL WORK AGAIN, UNTIL IT FAILS LATER. - PASSENGER SIDE FRONT MUDFLAP CAME OFF BACKING (SLOWLY) OVER AN AVERAGE-SIZED SPEED BUMP. LUCKILY, THE FRONT FASTENERS ARE INTEGRATED INTO THE FRONT BUMPER, SO TO REPLACE THE MUDFLAP WOULD REQUIRE REPLACING THE ENTIRE FRONT BUMPER. - DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SIDE REAR WHEEL WELL SKIRT PLASTIC FASTENERS HAVE MOSTLY FALLEN OUT, CAUSING THE FOAM FILLER TO DROOP DOWN AND RUB THE TIRES, OR FALL OUT COMPLETELY. - PASSENGER SIDE REAR SEAT LATCH IN THE TRUNK (THAT RELEASES THE SEAT TO FOLD DOWN) BROKE OFF DURING NORMAL USE. - AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE FRONT END SHAKES VIOLENTLY (ALSO ON A COMPLETELY RANDOM SCHEDULE) TO THE POINT THAT BRAKING NEARLY CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO GO OUT OF CONTROL. 2 VISITS TO TWO DIFFERENT (GM CERTIFIED) DEALERSHIPS AND ALL THEY COULD TELL ME WAS, "WE CAN'T REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM, AND DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT". *TR

THEY TOOK THE CAR REPLACED THE ELECTRIC MODULE..TOLD ME THEY TOOK IT FOR RIDE AND THE POWER STEERING MODULE BURNED OUT THE POWER STEERING ELECTRIC MODULE AND THAT I WOULD NEED ANOTHER $800 SOME ODD DOLLARS. I TOLD THEM I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY. THEY SAID THEN THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THEY CHARGED ME $363.00 AND TOLD ME THE CAR WAS VERY VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE..BUT YET THEY LET ME DRIVE IT OFF OF THE LOT LIKE THAT IN THE SAME CONDITION. THEY SAID THEY DID NOT CONNECT THE POWER STEERING MODULE BACK TO THE POWER ELECTRIC STEERING MODULE SO IT WOULDN'T BURN IT OUT. I TOLD THEM MAYBE THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM. IF THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MODULE WAS REPLACED IN JUNE..IT WASN'T EVEN A YEAR BEFORE IT WAS NO GOOD. OF COURSE THE WARRANTY WAS OVER. I CALLED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE OFFICE AND DEMANDED MY MONEY BACK. I'M OUT $363.00 AND NOTHING IS FIXED. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I TOLD THEM THEY NEED TO DO A RECALL ON THE POWER STEERING MODULES. I WISH THAT YOU WOULD INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM. AS I WAS READING ON THE AUTOGUIDE.COM..THERE ARE ALOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY DIDN'T CARE THAT I COULD HAVE AN ACCIDENT OR KILL SOMEONE ELSE. ALL THAT MATTERED IS THAT I DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY. BY THE WAY THE PART WAS SUPPOSEDLY $140.00 BUT THE LABOR WAS $230.00. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD BANGING NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE CONTACT STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND BEGAN TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND HEARD A POPPING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V073000 (STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 65,000. UPDATED 12/19/11
SUPER LATCH BELT ON MY RADIAN XTSL (NITRO) LOOSENS VERY EASILY. WE HAVE 2 XTSL SEATS 1 IN FLORA AND ONE IN NITRO. THE FLORA SEAT DOES NOT HAVE THIS ISSUE. THE INSTALL FOR THESE SEATS ARE PERFECT AND EXACTLY THE SAME, BOTH INSTALLED WITH SL AND BOTH ARE REAR FACING INSTALLED OUTBOARD. HOWEVER I CAN JIGGLE THE NITRO XTSL SEAT NEAR THE BELT PATH AND THE SL BECOMES UNSAFELY LOOSE. (RELATED VEHICLE INFORMATION: MODEL YEAR=2005, MAKE=CHEVROLET, MODEL=COBALT). *TR
LAST YEAR, MY 05 COBALT EXPERIENCED POWER STEERING FAILURE AND CONCURRENT HARD SHIFTING BETWEEN GEARS UPON POWER STEERING NOTICE OF FAILURE. I TOOK MY CAR IN TO THE DEALER TO BE FIXED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ASSOCIATED RECALL. LAST WEEK, ONE YEAR LATER, I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME EXACT PROBLEMS AGAIN. THE CAR WILL CHIME AND REPORT "POWER STEERING FAILURE". IF DRIVING ABOVE 15 MPH, THERE ISN'T MUCH TO NOTICE REGARDING POWER STEERING, HOWEVER, IF CHANGING SPEED REQUIRES YOUR CAR TO SHIFT UP OR DOWN TO A DIFFERENT GEAR, THE CAR WILL JERK ("HICCUP") HEAVILY, AS IF AN INEXPERIENCED DRIVER WAS TRYING TO DRIVE A CAR WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THE CAR HAS 46,000 MILES ON IT AND THIS IS CLEARLY NOT MY PROBLEM. PLEASE INSIST THAT GM ISSUE A RECALL WITH A REAL REMEDY FOR THIS ISSUE. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000.

DURING THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT ALSO BEGAN TO HEAR A CLICKING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND SHUT OFF. UPON RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE POWER STEERING SERVICE LIGHT AND ANOTHER WARNING BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THERE WAS NO STEERING FAILURE EVEN THOUGH THE POWER STEERING SERVICE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,300.
