I WAS DRIVING MY CHEVY COBALT ON TUESDAY AROUND 25 MPH WHEN SOMETHING POPPED UP SAYING POWER STEERING, THE STEERING WHEEL GOT COMPLETELY HARD AND I COULDN'T TURN IT. ALMOST GOT INTO A CAR ACCIDENT WHILE MAKING A LEFT. NEXT DAY, NOTHING HAPPENED. A DAY AFTER, IT STARTED WITH THE PROBLEM AGAIN. TOOK MY CAR TO THE MECHANIC AND HE TOLD ME THAT IT MIGHT BE THAT THE PUMP WENT BAD. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS AND REALLY SCARY. GM HAS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT CONSIDERING I AM NOT THE FIRST ONE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS. *TR
ON NOVEMBER 11TH, 2013, I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE DOWN MY STREET WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY CAR READS POWER STEERING AND THE TC LIGHT ALSO COMES ON. THE CAR BEGINS TO JERK AS IF IT WAS GOING TO TURN OFF ON ITS ON. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WAITED ABOUT 5 MINUTES BEFORE I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN THE LIGHTS WENT OFF AND THE CAR DROVE AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. ON NOVEMBER 24TH, 2013, I WAS LEAVING WORK AND AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT INTO INCOMING TRAFFIC, THE WHEEL ALL OF A SUDDEN JUST LOCKED UP ON ME AND I ALMOST HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. WHEN I PULLED OVER, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN BUT THIS TIME SO DOES THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT. I DROVE IT TO THE NEAREST AUTO ZONE TO GET A DIAGNOSTICS ON IT AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE CODES THAT HAD SHOWED UP WERE DEALER CODES AND ONLY THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I STOPPED AT THE GAS STATION TO TRY AND CHECK THE POWER STEERING FLUID ON IT BUT THERE WAS NO DIPSTICK. WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON AGAIN, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT AND TRANSMISSION LIGHT BOTH TURNED OFF AND THE CAR DROVE AS IF NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. I GOOGLED THE CODES THAT THE GENTLEMAN GAVE ME AT AUTO ZONE AND IT TURNS OUT THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON MY TYPE OF VEHICLE FOR THE SAME EXACT ISSUES. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO TRY AND GET THE ISSUE FIXED FOR FREE, BUT WHEN I GAVE THE MECHANIC THE LAST 8 DIGITS OF MY VIN, HE STATED TO ME THAT MY CAR WASN'T LISTED ON THE LIST OF RECALLS DESPITE THE FACT THAT IM HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AS THE CARS THAT HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN RECALLED. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AND I FEAR FOR MY SAFETY AS WELL AS THE SAFETY OF MY KIDS AND OTHER DRIVERS. PLEASE HELP ME TO GET THIS ISSUE REPORTED ASAP TO GM. SITTING AT A TURN LIGHT, CARS STARTED TO MOVE AND I STARTED TO ACCELERATE WHEN I HEARD A LOUD POP NOISE (WAS NOT GOING OVER MORE THAN 10MPH). SO I PULLED OVER AND LOOKED OPENED THE HOOD TO FIND MY OIL CAP, FILTER, A BLACK PIECE, AND SPRING HAD POPPED OUT OF THE OIL FILTER LOCATION WHICH WAS IN THE BLOCK. OIL HAD BEEN SPEWED ALL OVER. I TOOK THE OIL CAP TO A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE GUY SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN THE OIL CAP AND FILTER POP OUT OF THE BLOCK, HE EXAMINED THE CAP AND ONLY NOTICED ONE MINOR BREAK IN THE THREADS OF THE CAP. HE SAID THAT THE BLACK PIECE AND THE SPRING THAT GO IN THE CAP MUST HAVE FAILED WHICH IN TURN CAUSE THE CAP TO POP OUT OF THE BLOCK, HE ALSO TOLD ME TO LOOK AT THE BLOCK TO MAKE SURE IT WAS NOT CRACKED. I THEN INSPECTED BLOCK TO MAKE SURE IT WAS NOT CRACKED, WHICH IT WAS NOT, AND HAD A NEW CAP, FILTER AND OIL INSTALLED. *TR
2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO IGNITION SWITCH AND STALLING PROBLEMS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE BEGAN STALLING OUT AND RUNNING ON REDUCED POWER IN NOVEMBER 2013. THE CONSUMER ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE PROBLEM HIMSELF, BUT TO NO AVAIL. HE THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO TWO DIFFERENT MECHANICS WHO WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AT RESOLVING THE ISSUE. HE THEN WENT TO THE DEALER, WHERE HE WAS INFORMED MULTIPLE CODES WERE DISPLAYING, AND THEY SPENT QUITE SOME TIME, IN FIXING THE ISSUE. EVERYTHING SEEMED OK FOR A WHILE, AND THEN THE PROBLEM RETURNED. THE DEALER THEN REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND LOCK CYLINDER. THE CONSUMER DID NOT BELIEVE, THE IGNITION SWITCH AND LOCK CYLINDER WERE THE MAIN PROBLEM WHICH CAUSED HIS VEHICLE TO STALL. THE STALLING CONTINUED TO BE AN ONGOING ISSUE. *JB

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND REPAIRED BUT THE CONTACT DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS SPECIFICALLY REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 205,510.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 31,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 31,500.
THE LATCHING MECHANISM ON THE DOORS STOPPED WORKING PROPERLY, USUALLY WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURES BEGIN TO DROP, BUT IT ISN'T ALWAYS THE CASE. THE DOORS EITHER WON'T OPEN OR WON'T CLOSE, AND THE HANDLES DON'T WORK INSIDE OR OUTSIDE OF THE CAR WHEN THE LATCH WON'T RELEASE. SOMETIMES BANGING VERY HARD ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE DOOR AT A CERTAIN LOCATION RELEASES IT AND IT WORKS AGAIN UNTIL THE NEXT TIME YOU NEED TO OPEN IT. I'VE SEEN MANY POSTS ONLINE OF COBALT OWNERS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD, AND SHOULD REQUIRE A RECALL. IF BOTH DOORS STOPPED WORKING AT THE SAME TIME I WOULD BE STUCK INSIDE THE CAR, OR STUCK OUTSIDE NOT BEING ABLE TO GET IN AND DRIVE MY CAR. AND WHAT IF THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY? UNFORTUNATELY REPAIR SHOPS HAVE NO CLUE WHAT'S GOING ON OR HOW TO FIX IT, AND I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE WHO CAN'T GET IT REPAIRED. *TR
I REPLACED IGNITION SWITCH AS PER PROCEDURES FOR RECALL AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED REIMBURSEMENT AS PROMISED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE POWER STEERING WOULD BECOME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER AND THE VEHICLE WOULD VIBRATE VIOLENTLY. THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURES OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF WHILE RUNNING. I'VE STOPPED AT STOP LIGHTS AND WHEN I TRY TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE CAR WILL SHUT TOTALLY OFF WHILE IN DRIVE. THE DOOR LOCKS ARE CONSTANTLY RUNNING UP AND DOWN AND WILL NOT STAY LOCKED. MANY TIMES I'VE COME BACK TO THE CAR THINKING IT WAS LOCKED TO FIND IT UNLOCKED ITSELF. THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEM HAS CREATED A PROBLEM WITH BRAND NEW BATTERIES. I'VE REPLACED IT TWICE SINCE PURCHASING THE CAR IN 2010. *TR
CAR SIMPLY STALLED ON I 376 AT HIGHWAY SPEED. CAR WON'T START UNLESS IGNITION KEY IS "JIGGLED". *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S DOORS CONSTANTLY LOCKED INDEPENDENTLY. THE CONTACT HAD TO CRAWL IN AND OUT OF THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE WINDOW. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND THE POWER STEERING AND CHECK ENGINE INDICATORS ILLUMINATED AND REMAINED LIT. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND POWERED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER RESTARTED AND DRIVEN TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT CALLED HARRY GREEN CHEVROLET AT 304-624-6304 (1858 E PIKE ST, CLARKSBURG, WV 26301) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT ABOUT NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V014000 (STRUCTURE). THE CONTACT HAD NOT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V073000 (STEERING). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 156,635.

THE APPROXIMATE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
ON SATURDAY MORNING 8/24/13 I GOT INTO MY CAR AND BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. ONCE I BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE THE CAR STARTED TO JERK. I KEPT DRIVING FOR ABOUT ANOTHER 50 FEET TO A STOP SIGN. IT JERKED TO WHOLE WAY TO THE STOP SIGN. THERE I MADE A U TURN TO GO BACK HOME TO GET MY FATHER. HE GOT IN THE CAR AND WE DROVE BACK TO THE SAME CORNER AND ONCE AGAIN IT JERKED THE WHOLE WAY TO THE STOP SIGN. SO WE WENT BACK TO THE HOUSE SO MY DAD COULD GET SOME HIS SHOES ON SO WE COULD TAKE IT TO WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR. WHILE HE WAS IN THE HOUSE I TURN THE CAR OFF. WHEN MY DAD GOT BACK IN THE CAR AND I TURN THE CAR BACK ON AND DROVE TO THE SIGN THE JERKING HAD WENT AWAY. I DROVE THE CAR THE REST OF THE DAY AND PUT AROUND 75 MILES ON IT THAT DAY WITH NO OTHER PROBLEMS. ON SUNDAY NIGHT 8/25/13 I GOT INTO MY CAR TO DRIVE INTO TOWN. I DROVE ABOUT BLOCK AND THE CAR BEGAN TO JERK AND SHAKE AGAIN. I DROVE ABOUT ANOTHER BLOCK AND PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT. ONCE I STOPPED I NOTICED THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD HAD COME ON. I TURNED MY CAR OFF AND SIT THERE FOR A LITTLE WHILE TURNED IT BACK ON AND DROVE IN TOWN WITH NO PROBLEMS THE REST OF THE NIGHT. ON MONDAY 8/26/13 I DROVE THE CAR 30 MILES BACK TO WHERE I BOUGHT IT WITH NO PROBLEMS. THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN TRYING TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM NOW FOR 3 DAY WITH NO SUCCESS. *TT

REAR DOOR OPENED WHILE DRIVING. POWER STEERING CUTS OFF. *TR
AT RANDOM TIMES, MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT WILL POP UP A "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AND A "TRACTION CONTROL" LIGHT, WHERE I LOSE MY POWER STEERING, THE MOTOR SHIFTS HARD INTO EACH GEAR, AND THE MOTOR RUNS VERY ROUGH. ALSO, THERE ARE CLICKING SOUNDS AT THE SHIFTER, LIKE IT IS TRYING TO SHIFT INTO A GEAR OR SOMETHING. THIS IS A SERIOUS HAZARD AND AS I'VE READ ONLINE, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF OTHERS. THIS ENTIRE CAR NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BECAUSE NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IS DOING THIS! *TR
2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. CONSUMER REQUESTS REIMBURSEMENT FOR POWER STEERING MOTOR RECALL REPAIRS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT ON THE VEHICLE. IF SHE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND BACK ON, THE STEERING WOULD RESUME NORMAL OPERATION MOMENTARILY. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT DID ILLUMINATE AND THERE WAS AN ALERT SOUND. A DIAGNOSIS REVEALED THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING MOTOR FAILED. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER, WHO ORIGINALLY PERFORMED THE RECALL, IN 2010. THEY INFORMED HER THEY WERE NO LONGER REQUIRED TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING MOTOR AGAIN. THE CONSUMER WENT TO ANOTHER ESTABLISHMENT AND HAD THE STEERING MOTOR REPLACED AT A COST OF $ 633.11. *JB
WHILE DRIVING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE INFORMATION DISPLAY ON THE DASHBOARD FLASHED "POWER STEERING." THE CAR BEGAN SHIFTING IN AND OUT OF GEAR. THE SHIFTS ARE VERY ROUGH AND CAUSE THE CAR TO JERK. THERE IS ALSO A RAPID CLICKING SOUND THAT COMES FROM THE AREA OF THE GEAR SELECTOR. THE CODE FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT RELATES TO THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING IN TO MY APARTMENT COMPLEX WHEN MY CAR COMPLETELY LOSS POWER. I WAS ABLE TO STEER, HOWEVER I WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCELERATE. THE RADIO TURNED OFF AND THE AIR CONDITIONER QUITE WORKING. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE SINCE I'VE GOTTEN MY CAR. LUCKILY, I WAS IN PLACES WHERE I COULD SAFELY PULL OVER. I HAD TO TURN MY CAR OFF, WAIT FOR A FEW MINUTES AND TURN IT BACK ON TO GET IT TO WORK CORRECTLY. I AM ALSO HAVING ISSUES WITH MY POWER STEERING. I AM STARTING TO THINK THAT THIS CAR JUST ISN'T SAFE ANYMORE AND I AM LOOKING INTO POSSIBLY GETTING A NEW CAR BECAUSE OF IT. IT IS BECOMING DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THIS CAR! *TR
THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON, THE CAR STARTED JERKING REALLY BAD. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE "POWER STEERING" STARTED FLASHING ON MY DASHBOARD. MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT, I WAS UNABLE TO STEER THE CAR. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY COULD NOT GET IT TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. EXACTLY ONE WEEK LATER, IT DID IT AGAIN, ONCE AGAIN I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 WEEKS AND COULD NOT GET IT TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. SO, ONCE AGAIN I HAVE THE CAR BACK, LETS SEE HOW LONG IT TAKES TO SCREW UP THIS TIME. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HILL AND MY CAR MADE A "DING NOISE" THREE TIMES AND ON THE DISPLAY IT SAID POWER STEERING AT WHICH TIME IT MADE A CLICKING NOISE AND I COULD BARELY TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, I MADE IT ABOUT 3 FEET WITH THE CAR "BUCKING" AND WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO THE NEAREST PARKING LOT AND SAT THERE AND TURNED MY CAR OFF AND THEN TURNED IT ON THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD ONLY TURN SLIGHTLY AND MY CAR WOULD NOT REVERSE. THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO AND I HAD IT FIXED FOR $800 AND NOW IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN. I AM FEARFUL THAT THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND I DON;T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY POWER STEERING. I HAD A NEW ENGINE PUT IN LAST YEAR AND ALL THIS FOR A CAR THAT IS ONLY 7 YRS OLD. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO KEEP REPLACING PARTS AND I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS IS NOT A SAFE CAR FOR MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY, "POWER STEERING" MESSAGE IS DISPLAYED ON DASH, WARNING CHIME SOUNDS REPEATEDLY, POWER DOOR LOCKS CYCLE AT RANDOM, INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES STOP WORKING INTERMITTENTLY AND JUMP AROUND, COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER, AND RANDOM WARNING LIGHTS APPEAR ON DASH. AT TIMES THE GAS PEDAL WAS COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE, THEN VEHICLE WOULD LURCH FORWARD - HAD A NEAR MISS INCIDENT WHEN THE LOSS OF POWER ON ACCELERATION FROM A RED LIGHT ALMOST CAUSED ANOTHER VEHICLE TO HIT US. ISSUE HAS OCCURRED AT RANDOM INTERVALS SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW, BUT HAS BECOME MORE FREQUENT LATELY AND TENDS TO OCCUR MORE OFTEN ON HOT DAYS. DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE CONCERN, DESPITE HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 10V073000 (STEERING) WAS PERFORMED HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE STALLED NUMEROUS TIMES AFTER THE REPAIRS. ADDITIONALLY, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED AN ABNORMAL AND SPORADIC CLICKING NOISE. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS WERE ABNORMALLY DIM AND THE TRANSMISSION EXHIBITED A LOUD NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 39,000.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE POWER STEERING GAVE OUT. I HAD THIS REPLACED IN 2010 AND IT HAS ALREADY GIVEN OUT. AT SOME POINT DURING THE CRASH, THE CAR SHUT OFF AND THE AIRBAGS NEVER DEPLOYED. WHEN THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED, MY FIANC WAS UNABLE TO TURN IT BACK ON AND HAD TO PUSH IT OFF THE BUSY HIGHWAY BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE HIT THE CAR. *TR
ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS THE SPRING MECHANISM IN THE REAR DRUM BRAKES OF MY CHEVROLET COBALT HAVE BROKEN CAUSING THE REAR DRUM BRAKE TO LOCK UP THE WHEEL WHILE IN MOTION, MEANING THE BRAKE BECOMES FULLY ENGAGED AND THE WHEEL STOPS ROTATING DRAGGING THE TIRE DOWN THE ROAD. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE NEW IN FEBRUARY 2005. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN VERY DILIGENT IN MAINTAINING AND CARING FOR MY CAR. THIS SUMMER I HAD NOTICED A GASOLINE ODOR SEVERAL TIMES WHEN I GOT INTO MY CAR. I ALWAYS LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE FOR WET SPOTS OR DRIPPING BUT NEVER FOUND ANYTHING. IN JANUARY 2014 I TOOK MY CAR IN TO HAVE THE ANNUAL SAFETY INSPECTION DONE. THE INSPECTOR TOLD ME MY CAR NEEDED BRAKES ON BOTH AXLES AND FRONT ROTORS. HE ALSO TOLD ME HE SMELLED A GASOLINE ODOR BUT COULD NOT FIND AN ACTIVE LEAK EVEN THOUGH HE TURNED THE KEY ON AND PRIMED THE FUEL SYSTEM SEVERAL TIMES. BECAUSE IT WAS RAINING THAT DAY HE TOLD ME THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS WET WHICH PREVENTED HIM FROM FINDING ANY WET AREAS DUE TO A FUEL LEAK. HE TOLD ME HE WOULD CHECK AGAIN WHEN I BROUGHT IT BACK FOR THE RE-INSPECTION. A FEW DAYS LATER, AFTER THE BRAKE REPAIRS, THE INSPECTOR PUT MY CAR ON THE LIFT AND FOUND THE FABRIC HEAT SHIELD/SLEEVE WAS DAMP WITH GASOLINE. HE REMOVED THE HEAT SHIELD/SLEEVE AND FOUND THAT THE SUPPLY FUEL LINE HAD RUSTED THROUGH. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE COBALT MODEL. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND THEY GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $647 TO REPLACE THE ONE BAD FUEL LINE! A FUEL LINE RUSTING THROUGH IN LESS THAN 9 YEARS? TERRIBLE DESIGN HAVING FUEL LINES RUN A FEW INCHES FROM THE EXHAUST PIPES. TERRIBLE QUALITY PARTS THAT FAIL PREMATURELY AND CAUSE A FIRE HAZARD MAKING THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE CAR FUNCTIONED NORMALLY UNTIL MARCH 31 OF 2013 WHEN THE COBALT, WITH ONLY 17, 321 MILES, WAS BROUGHT TO THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AFTER MY WIFE EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF THE POWER STEERING. NEXT I ACCOMPANIED MY WIFE TO THE PARKING LOT WHERE IT HAD BEEN PARKED AND DISCOVERED THAT UPON RE-STARTING, THE CAR FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HOWEVER WAS ON. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP ON FEB. 1, 2013 WHERE THE POWER STEERING PROBLEM AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS DISCUSSED. THE TECHNICIANS INDICATED THAT THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE POWER STEERING, SIMPLY STATING THAT, "'IT WORKS NOW!" ON FRIDAY MARCH 8, 2013, THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE SPEEDOMETER, A CHIME SOUNDED, AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I MANAGED TO DRIVE THE CAR HOME AND PARK IT. THE STEERING WAS VERY HARD TO OPERATE, AS THE POWER STEERING WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. IF MY WIFE HAD BEEN DRIVING, I SERIOUSLY DOUBT WHETHER SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC, WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST BUT WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AFTER DIAGNOSIS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE VEHICLE AND OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,000.
