EVERY 50 OR SO ATTEMPTS AT STARTING MY 2000 MALIBU THE CAR WON'T START UNLESS I LEAVE THE IGNITION SET TO "ON" FOR 10 MINUTES. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM SO FAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ANTI-THEFT SENSOR WAS ILLUMINATING INTERMITTENTLY. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT WAS NOT ABLE TO GET THE KEY TO TURN FROM AN OFF POSITION TO AN ON POSITION. ON SOME OCCASIONS, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V224000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 112,000.
I WAS DRIVING TO TEXAS FROM MISSOURI, DOING THE SPEED LIMIT WHICH IS 70 AND ON A BUSY INTERSTATE AND ON A BRIDGE WITH KNOW SHOULDER,AND MY 2000 CHEVY MALIBU JUST SHUTS OFF ,NO WARNING AND WAS NEARLY HIT BY A SEMI 18 WHEELER ON THE BRIDGE, I FINALLY GOT OFF THE BRIDGE ,AND 15 MINUTES IT STARTS BACK UP AGAIN AND I GO ANOTHER 20-30- MILES AGAIN SAME PROBLEM,SO A CHEVY DEALER IN ARK BY THE NAME OF PETUS .WORKS ON MY CAR ,PUT A MAP SENSOR ON CAR AND CHARGES ME $158.00 AND TELLS ME IT IS FIXED. AND TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED,WELL 100 MILES DOWN THE ROADS IT HAPPEN AGAIN,WELL TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, AND THE LAST 60 MILES I HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED AT $4.00 A MILE . I READ THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY CAR. I NEED ANSWER, I WANT TO BE ABLE TO GO BACK TO MY HOME IN MISSOURI, IF NEED TO MY MOTHER IS SICK AND I AM STUCK AND AFRAID TO TRAVEL FOR FEAR OF BREAKING DOWN. HER FATHER CHECKED THE FUSE AND EVERYTHING APPEARED TO BE NORMAL; HOWEVER, HE DISCOVERED THAT BY WIGGLING THE HAZARD LIGHT SWITCH THE LIGHTS WOULD OPERATE, BUT FAIL SHORTLY AFTER. I OWN A 200 CHEVY MALIBU AND HAVE HAD TO REPAIR AN INTAKE MANIFOLD TWICE- ONCE AT 92,000 MILES AND AGAIN AT 105,000 MILES. GM KNOWS THAT THEIR DEX COOL ANTIFREEZE EATS THROUGH THE GASKETS BUT DOES NOTHING TO FIX IT. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THE GOV.'T LETS THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS. THIS IS VERY EXPENSIVE AND NOT SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE TO BE REPAIRED WITHIN 100,000.00 MILES. THE SPEEDS ON THE FAN DID NOT WORK SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE AND AROUND 50,000. MILES THE TURN SIGNAL DID NOT WORK . I DID HAVE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND BOTH WERE COVERED BUT THESE ARE NOT THINGS THAT SHOULD BREAK DOWN. THE RIGHT AND LEFT SIGNAL TURN LIGHTS FAIL TO OPERATE AT INTERMITTENT TIMES. I WAS NEARLY INVOLVED IN SEVERAL REAR END CRASHES BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. I HAVE TO PUSH THE EMERGENCY FLASHER BUTTON TO OPERATE THE TURN SIGNALS. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 03V327000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS:SWITCH). THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST TO BE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU , BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2005. THE ANTI-THEFT LIGHT COMES ON AND CAR WON'T CRANK, OR A FEW MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD IF IT DOES CRANK IT STALLS LOOSES ALL POWER ,AND THEN WON'T CRANK FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES LATER IF NOT I MIGHT HAVE TO BEAT WITH MY HAND ON THE DASH JUST UNDER THE IGNITION SWITCH FOR ALL POWER TO REGAIN ITS SELF. THIS PROBLEM STARTED BACK IN 2008, BUT MY HUSBAND GOT IT DOING RIGHT AGAIN AFTER ABOUT A MONTH OF TAPPING THE COMPUTER PART OF THE SWITCH FROM THE INSIDE OF THE DASH WITH A SCREW DRIVER HANDLE EVERY TIME HE WENT TO CRANK IT. IT DID FINE UP UNTIL RECENTLY , ABOUT SOMEWHERE IN FEBRUARY OF 2011, IT STARTED DOING IT AGAIN, DEALERSHIP CAN SEEM TO TELL ME NOTHING, THEY HAVE NO IDEA EVEN AFTER RUNNING IT ON A COMPUTER OVER NIGHT, ALL BECAUSE THE COMPUTER THEY SAID CAN'T FIND ANYTHING, HOW DUMB. I AM POOR, CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER CAR. I LOVE MY MALIBU APART FROM WHAT IT IS DOING TO ME, I HAVE 2 KIDS, SMALL KIDS, THEY ARE WITH ME 24/7 AND THE CAR WILL JUST DIE ON ME LEAVING ME TO USE ALL ,Y STRENGTH AND POWER TO STEER AND STOP THE CAR ON TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. TO TOP IT OFF MY AIR ISN'T WORKING ANYMORE, AND BEING STUCK LIKE THAT IN THE HEAT FROM THIS STATE OF ALABAMA, IS NOT FUN OR HEALTHY FOR MY 2 KIDS OR ME. I JUST WANT IT TO WORK LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO . I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY OVER 300 DOLLARS FOR A SWITCH AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF THAT IS THE PROBLEM, MY CAR SURGES, AND NO ONE CAN SEEM TO TELL ME A STRAIGHT ANSWER , BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. HE CANNOT USE THE TURN SIGNALS TO INDICATE HIS INTENT TO TURN THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED FROM NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 03V327000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS:SWITCH); THEREFORE, HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY $300 TO HAVE THE COMPONENT REPLACED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
CAR DROVE WELL FOR 4 YEARS NO PROBLEM, THEN SIGNAL LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING, WORKS SOMETIMES, BUT MOST OF THE TIME DOESN'T, HAVE HAD BULBS CHANGED MANY TIMES, BRAND NEW BULBS, SIGNALS WORKS WHEN THEY WANT TO. I'VE BEEN HONKED AT & CARS HAVE BLEW THEIR HORNS AT MY VEHICLE BECAUSE I HAVE TO TURN SOMETIMES & IT FAILS TO WORK,THEN I SAW RECALL ON INTERNET. *TR
I BOUGHT THE CAR AT THE END OF 2000 AND HAD TO REPLACE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS AT AROUND THE SAME TIME (THANKSGIVING) IN 2001. MY FUEL PUMP WENT OUT IN 2002 AND MY MECHANIC JUST TOLD ME THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS ARE LEAKING AGAIN. HE SUGGEST TO REPLACE THEM SOON. IT COST $900 TO GET IT FIXED THE FIRST TIME WHICH WAS NOT UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY PLAN. I JUST PAID THE CAR OFF AND HAVE TO FORK OUT ANOTHER $700-900 TO GET IT FIXED AGAIN. IT IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE TO GM THAT THERE IS A HISTORY OF GASKETS PROBLEMS IN SEVERAL CHEVY MODELS ESPECIALLY THE MALIBU, BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED AND NO COMPENSATION HAS BEEN AWARDED TO ALL THOSE HARD WORKING PEOPLE WHO TRUST THE CHEVY NAME. IF NOTHING IS DONE I WILL NEVER BUY CHEVY AGAIN. PONTIAC HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH SOME OF ITS CARS A FEW YEARS BACK AND RECALLED ALL MODELS WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON THEM. WHY WONT CHEVY. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL OR A LEMON LAW ON THE CHEVROLET MALIBU!!! I AM SURPRISED THAT A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT HAS NOT BEEN FILED AGAINST GM FOR SELLING SUCH A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT!!! I HOPE THAT NO ONE HAS HAD AN ACCIDENT, INJURY, OR EVEN DEATH RESULT FROM THIS DANGEROUSLY DEFECTIVE CAR!!! *TR

THIRTY MINUTES LATER, THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH. THE LOW COOLANT WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE CONTACT VERIFIED HIS VIN; HOWEVER, IT WAS INVALID. THE ENGINE SIZE AND NUMBER OF CYLINDERS WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 125,000.
WHILE WE WERE DRIVING OUR 2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU HAD A SUDDEN FAILURE OF SOME COMPONENT IN THE GASOLINE STORAGE OR DELIVERY SYSTEM. WE SMELLED GAS AND SAW IT BEING SPILLED ON THE ROAD BEHIND US. WE PULLED OVER, CUT OFF AND EXITED THE CAR. WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF EXITING THE CAR, IT BURST INTO FLAMES AND WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY FIRE. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS BURNED OR HURT, BUT THE POTENTIAL FOR CATASTROPHIC INJURY WAS APPARENT. THE VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 CHEVY MALIBU WITH A FAULTY HAZARD SWITCH. AS PER GM MY CAR DOES NOT HAVE ANY RECALLS BASED ON MY VIN#. THE COST FOR THE PART IS UNDER $30 BUT THE COST FOR LABOR AT THE CHEVY DEALER IS MORE THAN $200 FOR A TOTAL OF ALMOST $300. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED THIS PART MYSELF AND MY TURN SIGNALS AND HAZARD'S ARE IN WORKING ORDER. I PAID THE $30 FOR THE PART AND IT TOOK ME LESS THAT 6 MINUTES TO REPLACE. NOW SINCE I'M SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HIS WAY AROUND A CAR, IT UPSETS ME THAT A DEALERSHIP WOULD CHARGE THAT MUCH. SINCE THE PART FOR THE RECALL FIXED MY PROBLEM AND GM SAYS IT HAD NO RECALLS I WOULD LIKE THEM TO PAY ME FOR THE REPAIR OF THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE STATED IN THE PAST THAT IF THEY FOUND THAT THIS WOULD BECOME A RECALL ISSUE THEY WOULD REIMBURSE ME FOR THE REPAIR. IT'S ONLY FAIR SINCE THEY WOULD CHARGE ME IN THE FIRST PLACE TO MAKE THE REPAIR SINCE IN THEIR SYSTEM MY CAR DOES NOT NEED ANY RECALLS. I COULD SEE THEM CHARGING FOR AN HOUR OF LABOR, PARTS AND TAX. BUT THAT WOULD BE ABOUT $100. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND OUT. THANKS. *TR

INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET REPLACED THREE TIMES UNDER AND OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY. HAZARD SWITCH MALFUNCTIONING - ALMOST CAUSED ACCIDENT TURNING SIGNAL/WIPER WASHER SWITCH MALFUNCTIONING PREMATURE BRAKE WEAR UNTIL CALIPERS REPLACED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT VARIOUS EMISSIONS AND FUEL VAPOR LEAKS. *JB

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH FOR APPROXIMATELY TEN MINUTES, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE DISPLAYED HOT. THE COOLANT LIGHT ILLUMINATED, WHICH INDICATED THAT THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS LOW. THE CONTACT STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND CHECKED THE LEVEL. HE THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO CARMAX AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET CAUSED THE FAILURE. CHEVROLET STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 133,000. UPDATED 12/12/07 *BF UPDATED.
2000 CHEVY MALIBU MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO PAY FOR REPAIRS ON THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH. CUSTOMER RECEIVED A LETTER FOR THIS REPAIR. VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. GM STILL REFUSES TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. *KB THE CONSUMER STATED 7 MONTHS AFTER RECEIVING THE NOTICE, SHE SOON BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS WITH THE TURN SIGNAL/HAZARD WARNING FLASHERS. THE CONSUMER HAD THE PROBLEM FIXED AT HER LOCAL DEALER, HOWEVER LESS THAN 2 YEARS LATER, SHE BEGAN EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE SERVICE WOULD NOT BE COVERED. THE CONSUMER STATED HER VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER 150,000 MILES AND WAS LESS THAN 10 YEARS OLD. *JB

APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES LATER SHE WAS UNABLE TO ACTIVATE THE TURN SIGNAL. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE EXTERIOR LIGHTING: HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS: SWITCH (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID # 03V327000) HOWEVER; THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED AS PART OF THE RECALL. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 131,000.

THE ANTI-THEFT IGNITION LOCK DEVICE MALFUNCTIONS EVERY DAY, 3 OR MORE TIMES IN MOST CASES, YOU HAVE TO WAIT 10 MINUTES TO ATTEMPT TO START THE CAR AGAIN AND EVEN THEN IT MAY NOT START AND YOU HAVE TO WAIT 10 MORE MINUTES, NOW ITS NOT A "CRASH YOUR CAR THROUGH A BUILDING AND KILL PEOPLE" TYPE OF PROBLEM BUT IT IS A "SIT IN YOUR CAR IN A TERRIBLE NEIGHBORHOOD AND PRAY YOU DONT GET RAPED, MURDERED, ROBBED, ETC" PROBLEM. I RECENTLY WAS WORKING IN INNER CITY BALTIMORE AND WAS REQUIRED TO PARK MY CAR ON GREENMOUNT AVENUE, WHICH IS THE WORST OF THE WORST AND SOMETIMES IT WOULD TAKE ME AN HOUR TO START MY CAR!!!!!!!!! I AM REPORTING THIS BECAUSE 2 SEPARATE REPAIR SHOPS INFORMED ME THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT FOR THIS MODEL, TO THE EXTENT THE DEFECT IS POSTED ON ALL REPAIR DATA BASES. IN HOT AND HUMID OR WET WEATHER, MY 2000 CHEVY MALIBU'S PASSLOCK SYSTEM GOES INTO FAIL SAFE/STANDBY MODE WHEN I ATTEMPT TO START THE VEHICLE WHICH RENDERS MY VEHICLE UNABLE TO START FOR A MINIMUM OF 10 MINUTES. THIS HAS LEFT ME INNUMERABLE TIMES STRANDED FOR 10 MINUTES IN RATHER DANGEROUS LOCATIONS SUCH AS ILL-LIGHTED PARKING LOTS AFTER DARK. THE FREQUENCY OF THESE FAILURES RECENTLY BEGAN TO INCREASE, SO I RESEARCHED INFORMATION ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF DISABLING THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM THAT FAILS TO DO LITTLE MORE THAN CAUSE A HEADACHE FOR MY MECHANICS. TO MY DISMAY, I FOUND THAT CHEVY'S PASSLOCK SYSTEM CANNOT BE OVERRIDDEN BY ANY METHOD SHORT OF A DO-IT-YOURSELF RE-WIRING PROJECT. TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED TEMPORARILY, I COULD HAVE THE ENTIRE IGNITION SYSTEM REPLACED BY CHEVROLET FOR SOMEWHERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF $450. NOTE THAT I SAID TEMPORARY BECAUSE FROM THE STORIES OF THOSE WHO HAVE HAD THE REPAIR DONE, IT WILL NEED TO BE DONE AGAIN A FEW YEARS LATER AS THE IGNITION WEARS DOWN ONCE MORE. I AM ALSO CONCERNED BY STORIES I HEAR ABOUT FURTHER PROBLEMS THAT DRIVERS HAVE HAD WITH THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM WHERE THE CAR ENGINE TURNS ITSELF OFF WHILE BEING DRIVEN AND REQUIRES THAT THE DRIVER PULL OVER TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. I WAS INFORMED RECENTLY , DURING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE IN MAY, 2007, OF A COMMON PROBLEM OFTEN OBSERVED IN GM 3.1 L AND 3.4L V-6 ENGINES. THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET LEAKED AND ALLOWED CROSS CONTAMINATION OF THE COOLANT AND OIL SYSTEMS. THE OIL SYSTEM LEAKED INTO THE COOLANT SYSTEM, CLOGGING THE FLOW OF ENGINE COOLANT AND DAMAGING OTHER SYSTEMS, GASKETS AND FLUIDS. THE COOLANT LEAKE D INTO THE OIL SYSTEM AS WELL, CAUSING ENGINE WEAR.*AK NOW I AM TOLD IT WILL COST ABOUT $1000.00 TO REPLACE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET, IN ADDITION TO ALL THE OTHER GASKETS AFFECTED BY THIS LEAK. THE MAIN EXPENSE IS FOR THE LABOR TO REACH THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET IN MID-ENGINE. I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS ALL GM 3.1L AND 3.4L V-6 ENGINES SINCE 1996, AND THAT THESE ENGINES HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED, IN SPITE OF THE FREQUENCY OF THIS COMPLAINT.
