NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced catastrophic engine failure. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. Before the most recent failure, the contact heard an abnormally loud clicking sound coming from the engine and returned to the residence. The vehicle was driven to the dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was diagnosed with engine lifter failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 146,000.
A lifter has failed on the driver side of the engine. Dealer is going to replace the bad lifter, but I’m worried about all the metal debris that has been put into the motor, especially after the recall for the bad crankshaft bearings that could cause it to lock up at any time. There was no warnings or check engine light if they’re just had a very bad tick all of a sudden
While driving at highway speed with cruise control engaged, the vehicle experienced a sudden loss of propulsion. The engine began jerking and the vehicle rapidly decelerated from highway speed (50 mph) to 10–15 mph. The transmission appeared to disengage or shift to neutral around 10 mph, and the vehicle was unable to maintain speed, creating a hazardous situation in traffic. The vehicle then shut down and displayed a message to restart the engine along with a check engine light. When attempting to restart, the engine would not turn over properly and produced a loud clicking/struggling noise, similar to a failed or seized engine. The vehicle was towed and is currently awaiting diagnosis at a dealership. This failure occurred without warning and created a serious safety risk due to sudden loss of power while driving.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced transmission failure. The contact stated that the transmission struggled while changing gears. Additionally, while shifted into drive(D), the vehicle lunged forward with much force. The contact stated that when the vehicle was first started, the vehicle operated normally; however, once the engine had warmed up, the failure occurred. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 81,600.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly decelerated, lost automotive power, shifted to neutral, and then shifted into park. During the failure, the contact depressed the brake pedal and pressed the start button for approximately 10 seconds to restart the vehicle. The failure had occurred five times, and the contact was able to reset the computer and restart the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil, and the transmission was shifting hard. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the contact was informed that the engine in the vehicle was a replacement engine. The dealer had not diagnosed or repaired the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 4,000.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 72 MPH and towing a trailer, the vehicle stalled while on the off-ramp. The vehicle failed to restart with an abnormal clicking sound coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that the RPM was elevated. The contact was unsure if the sound was coming from the vehicle or another vehicle nearby. The message “Engine Oil Hot - Idle Engine” was displayed. The contact had previously received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 56,000.
McCredy Motors replaced the engine due to a recallin 6/2025. Husband was driving from our home [XXX] to town and we had made it to [XXX] . Husband stated there was no warning, no engine light, no oil lights, no indication of over heating. Just a loud clunking all of a sudden, nocking, grinding and crackling. Husband immediately pulled over left the truck over night at the Greene town barn and we called in the morning to have the truck towed back to McCredy motors on the morning of 4/4/26. Reading up on this I have found the even after the recall and a new engine customers are still having catastrophic engine failures. This is absolutely what I feel we are currently experiencing. McCredy Motors will diagnose on Monday when the Certified Chevy dealership opens. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I was driving in a 70mph zone and lost all propulsion. Vehicle said to shift to neutral to start. Pulled to the side of the highway and it would not crank. Had to have the vehicle towed.
Telematics module failure. Causing loss of Onstar, self driving feature, compass, navigation.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 45 MPH, the tailgate unintendedly opened unintentionally while there were items stored in the trunk. Upon coming to a stop at the red light, another driver alerted the contact that the tailgate was open. The contact pulled over to the side of the road, and the tailgate was closed. The vehicle was driven to the residence and was parked and turned off; however, the contact became aware that the tailgate had opened while the vehicle was turned off. The contact disconnected the tailgate switch to prevent the battery from draining. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the tailgate switch had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in GM Campaign Number: N232426400. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.
Vehicle experienced a sudden rough shift followed up by hard shifting and transmission locking up rear wheels. If I was traveling at a higher rate of speed (over 30mph) a accident could've easily resulted. Check engine light and vehicle went into reduced acceleration mode after 3 to 4 severe shift occurances. Dealer has vehicle and found the valve body of transmission was faulty and will be replacing entire valve body. Still under factory warranty. Mileage at occurance was 45,006 miles.
Truck went in for the recall around Nov/Dec 2025. Passed recall for 6.2l crankshaft and new oil was put in the vehicle. Today the truck lost power while driving and the check engine light came on to include a message saying the transmission went out. The vehicle is now un drivable and with a Chevrolets dealership waiting to be fixed
1. The fuel pump power control module on my 2022 Chevy Silverado failed. It was 38 months old and had 14,970 miles on it. I purchased it only 2 months ago. I believe the specific part number was 13554060. It was replaced with part number 13554821. The dealer retained--or more likely, disposed of--the old part. The cost of the repair was $762.87. 2. I was driving on Rt. US 20 in Toledo, Ohio. My truck experienced a sudden loss of power without warning. The vehicle stalled and would not restart. I had to call a tow truck. The truck was towed to Ballas Buick, where the part was replaced. 3. There was a voluntary recall of other vehicles that utilize this same part, so the manufacturer should be aware of the flaw in this component. The recall number is N252516900. 4. No warning light came on before the vehicle stalled, stranding me on the road. I had just enough of a sense of the impending failure to pull to the side of the road.
The vehicle experienced a sudden loss of 4WD capability and transmission communication while driving. The dealership diagnosed a defective battery ground cable. GM has issued Customer Satisfaction Program N252515590 for this exact issue, but they are refusing to cover my specific VIN despite the truck exhibiting the exact failure described. This defect causes the vehicle to lose critical powertrain functions, posing a safety risk on the road.
My L87 6.2L engine shut off on the interstate while driving in traffic at 70mph. I coasted to the left shoulder and attempted to restart it, but it would not turn over. I had it towed to a dealer where they diagnosed it as seized. Currently waiting for a new engine to arrive with no ETA. I had no warning signs or sounds. Two months prior it had the recall completed passing the PICO test and changed to the heavier oil.
My coolant control valve has failed, the dealership is saying the radiator is now leaking at a weld. They said this is a know issue, but are refusing to repair it. It is caused by the know failing ccv, causing the radiator to overheat.
The tailgate is clicking continuously and dropping at random moments when I’m stationary as well as driving. It is draining the battery and leaving me stranded with zero power or resources for help.
Year: 2022 Make: Chevrolet Model: Silverado 1500 Engine: 2.7L TurboMax (L3B) VIN: [XXX] Mileage at Failure: 119,139 Description of Problem: 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2.7L L3B TurboMax engine is completely inoperable due to Cylinder 4 exhaust roller follower failure causing exhaust camshaft failure and bent exhaust valves. Vehicle shakes severely, will not accelerate, check engine light on, and has gone into limp mode. Diagnostic codes P0304 (Cylinder 4 misfire) and P2101 (electronic throttle actuator fault triggered by engine shaking and limp mode) were recorded. All external components including spark plugs, coils, and injector harnesses were inspected and ruled out as causes. Failure is confirmed mechanical and internal. This failure was diagnosed and documented in writing by an authorized Chevrolet dealership on March 12, 2026 (Repair Order XXX, Service Advisor [XXX] ). The dealer's written estimate states verbatim: "Failed Cylinder 4 exhaust roller follower failure causing exhaust camshaft failure and bent exhaust valves. Cylinder head replacement required to correct this concern. Direct cause of engine noise and misfire condition." Dealer repair quote: $10,371.34. A second independent shop confirmed the same failure and cited Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) as known contributing design factors in this engine's oil consumption and internal wear pattern. That shop quoted between $11,876.88 and $14,897.35. This is a known pattern in the L3B engine platform. Consumer Reports has documented a 4% catastrophic failure rate in this engine. Multiple NHTSA complaints exist for this same failure across 2019-2022 model years. GM has issued technical service bulletins but has not issued a recall. General Motors was formally notified of this failure via certified mail and executive email on March 24, 2026. Vehicle is inoperable and poses a safety risk as the failure causes sudden loss of power and engine shaking w INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
While driving with my trailer my Tailgate opened by itself and hit my trailer when backing up. There is a open recall for a faulty switch that may allow the Tailgate to open unexpectedly. I called my dealer and said they could only replace the faulty switch and not my damaged tailgate. It was due to the faulty switch that led to my Tailgate getting damaged. I believe this switch and my Tailgate need to replaced.
The transmission died on my 2.7L Turbo Max engine in my 2022 Silverado. The "D" was flashing and giving no acceleration when pressing on the gas. The vehicle was also hard to shift. From my understanding the 2.7L turbo max is the only engine in this time frame that hasn't been re-called due to transmission issues.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the battery failed. The battery was replaced, and the next day the same failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the tailgate suddenly opened without the vehicle being started. The contact became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V060000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages); however, the VIN was not available. The recall information suggested that water was entering the vehicle and causing an electrical short. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the liftgate exterior release assembly had failed, Part Number: 85734717, and needed to be replaced with a new Part Number: 85877552. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 52,689.
Component Involved: Visibility/Backup Device, Electrical System, Forward Collision Avoidance Description of Incident: The Android 12-based infotainment system in this vehicle is suffering from a progressive hardware/software failure that creates a severe, multi-layered safety hazard. CRITICAL DRIVER DISTRACTION: The system has become largely non-responsive, requiring me to repeatedly press on-screen buttons to perform basic functions. This forces me to divert my eyes and manual attention away from the road for periods far exceeding 2 seconds. This "visual-manual distraction" is a direct result of the system's inability to process commands, making safe operation impossible while attempting to use vehicle controls. VISIBILITY FAILURE (FMVSS 111): The failure impacts the digital rearview mirror and the safety camera feeds. These cameras frequently glitch, lag, or freeze, depriving me of necessary rear and surround visibility while moving. This is a violation of federal safety standards for rearview visibility. SYSTEMIC ELECTRICAL FAILURE: This "slowly dying" system is also interfering with the vehicle's communication bus, causing the power door locks to malfunction. This creates an entrapment or security risk. I have reported these issues to General Motors/OnStar. Despite their awareness of these "electrical gremlins" and the existence of limited service updates (like Program #N242435631), no permanent fix has been provided. This is a systemic safety defect that requires a mandatory recall to prevent accidents caused by driver distraction and visibility loss. The system needs updating to Android 14. It is Android 12 now. This is the fix. Gm want me to pay $250 for a hour for a macanic to update it. Gm was updating over the air, but it was causing the battery on the vehicle's to prematurely die under warranty. It was affecting their bottom line.
L87 6.2L engine failure after doing recommended recall for a different oil
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado1500. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle in the driveway, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was jump-started, and the instrument panel was black. The contact was unable to see the speed, fuel gauge, and other important information. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with battery failure. The battery was replaced; however, the instrument panel was still black. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The mechanic informed the contact that when the vehicle was started, the battery charge immediately started to drain. The mechanic was contacted and reached out to the manufacturer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 13,000.
I went to Chevy in Warwick Rhode Island a few months back after all my adaptive cruise control and lane departure stuff stopped working. They reset it and it was fine for a couple months and now it isn’t working again. I went there and they said that my camera is not getting enough power and they have seen so many of these problems happening with these trucks but still no recall. Was waiting to get one because there should be a recall on these if so many trucks are having issues with it
I replaced rear brakes and rotors after getting brake monitor warning on 2022 silverado 1500. I have been having problem with amount of force needed to stop truck for quite a while. The pads were not worn much at all but brake pad clips were broken on both sides of rear brakes. Rotors were rusted which looked as if rear brakes have not been contacting rotors. The brakes work significantly better now. I live in NC where rust is not serious problem. I feel there is a problem with rear brake hardware on these trucks
2022 Silverado 1500 6.2L total engine failure, replacement needed
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH on four occasions, the rear wheels locked up. The contact slowed down and steered to the side of the road, and inspected the vehicle, but found no fault with it. The vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 101,411.
The rear tailgate started opening when I opened my doors and also when driving down the road. I would pull up and tail gate was wide open. I was okay but thankfully nothing in the back came out and hit vehicles behind me. No warning lights and anything. Dealership said it’s a faulty tailgate switch. Which 800,000 vehicles were recalled but not mine. Even though it’s the same year as the recalled vehicles. Gm needs to be held accountable for all of them. This was a problem for 3 weeks. Constant dead batteries, jumping vehicle, closing tailgate and causing lights to go crazy. This is a definite safety concern. Had to wait a week to get into dealership for diagnosis. Than over a week for the parts.
The truck is jumpy during stops. I get a low voltage code but the battery is fine I had it checked out. Reduced acceleration has been activated and after I turn the truck off it is fine. The check engine light comes on and turns off on it's on sometimes same day. I know there is a recall on certain 2022 Silverados but they told me this one wasn't on the recall. It did have one for the brake system they said.
The onstar module goes bad I have a 2022 with 60,000miles and they won't replace it and want to charge me $1,000 on a $80,000 truck. I'm not the only one I've seen multiple people with GM vehicles with the same exact issue. The people with super cruise (car drives itself) it will cause it to stop working. Not even the clock will work because onstar controls updating it I can't even connect to WiFi to have it fixed. If I manually set the time the next week it is 5 min behind the next 10 and within a month it's 20 mins behind. I'm pretty sure the SOS button won't work either
The transmission valve body failed. Even after the recall software update that it received. There were no warnings or codes, the transmission simply just started shifting hard and would not go in reverse. This type of incident could prove to be very dangerous especially in high traffic areas. There are only 35,000 miles on the Silverado 1500 trail boss. I took it in to the local Chevrolet dealership, and they confirmed that it was the valve body.
The engine seized while at highway speed in traffic during evening rush hour. The engine failure has been confirmed by a GM dealer and is set for replacement. There was no warning or indication that total engine failure was imminent.
While turning left, the transmission stuttered and got stuck in first gear. I did some basic research and learned that this is a known issue with 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado vehicles. I attempted the suggested fix which worked briefly. I then took the vehicle to my local Chevrolet dealer for repairs. After further research I learned that this is a known issue with my year and model of Silverado. GM further voluntarily offered a 15 year, 150,000 mile warranty for this issue. According to GM, my particular VIN is not included in this recall. I am concerned as to how many other trucks are not included. This issue also cost nearly 4,000 for the repair.
the rear window did not stop when a child's hand was in the closing space. The [XXX] old's hand was caught, causing injury and pain. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
My GM Silverado 2022 with 68k miles was recalled at 60k miles for the P0016 failure code involving the internal components of the L87 6.2L engine. The truck was promptly scheduled for testing and taken into the authorized dealer. The truck passed inspection. A very short time later (approx 8k miles or less) the 6.2L engine had a CRITICAL ENGINE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, the truck lost power after alerting a "CRITICALLY LOW OIL PRESSURE, SHUT ENGINE DOWN IMMEDIATELY". The vehicle shut itself down and I was left in a very dangerous situation with traffic and other serious hazards. The truck lost oil pressure and shut down which is a major safety concern as this rendered my GM truck without power; engine shutdown occurred WHILE DRIVING. This is AFTER I was assured the vehicle was 100% ok and NOT defective. It is not only defective, itr had to be towed on a semi truck and left us stranded in an unfamiliar place, again safety is a major concern in this area in addition to the earlier safety issues presented for my truck. It did have the P0016 code, which was found out when towed to the dealer, who also stated that the oil filter was "absolutely full of metal shavings". The dealers shop foreman stated they were going to disassemble the engine and see how bad the damage is as he stated it was VERY SEVERE. So much so that the dealer ordered a completely new engine but have no idea of arrival or when the vehicle will be done/completed. I reported this to GM Corp. office and stated my valid safety concerns but was quickly denied any resolution even in the face oif evidence by the dealer and my repeated efforts to tell them that I do NOT trust this specific truck any longer because it is a safety hazard and has already placed me in harms way. GM is not working to resolve my extreme concern regarding safety of this specific vehicle that had passed the engine recall test yet had a critical engine failure and loss of power while driving.
While stopped at a stop light engine quit running and after three attempts to restart MIL appeared and stated low oil pressure. Safety hazards included; being stuck at an intersection blocking traffic and putting myself at risk of being rear ended. was below freezing temperatures and stranded for an hour before tow arrived GM dealership found engine to be bad and needs replaced.
Fuel tank and def tank issues that throws error codes that will make your engine go into slump mode
While driving on interstate the screen said press button to start and the engine turned off on a steep uphill. After attempting to restart I tried to safely get to the shoulder without causing a wreck. This left us on the side of interstate for hours on a blind hilltop with trucks coming feet from us. After towing to the dealership they notified me that the engine was done and it fell victim to the recall that Chevy just had on the 6.2. Mind you I had already brought this truck in for the recall inspection and it supposedly passed
The automatic shifting gear is not shifting the vehicle won't speed up.
Hi, I would like to report an issue with my vehicle. The transmmision has been experiencing problems, and the dashboard radio display has been flickering intermittently.
Truck shift irratically and engine revved high and engine oil too hot message came up. Truck started to shut down on highway at 65mph pulling trailer and side by side in traffic. Once stopped truck would not restart. Engine oil temp was pegged too hot. Had to have truck towed.
Loud chatter/rattle noise under acceleration and idle loss of power with no engine lights on dash metallic shards in oil.
Was driving down the road at 35 mph and I instantly lost forward drive. Reverse worked but I could not drive forward. Got the vehicle towed and had to have the valve body in the transmission replaced.
I had the GM 6.2L motor recall test, it passed. Catastrophic engine failure at 50mph roughly 6000-7000 miles later. Luckily I got off the road safely. Confirmed by GM dealer, new engine has been ordered. No warning lights.
The engine coolant control valve went out on my vehicle. It is an 2022 LM2 engine. I found that that part frequently goes bad prematurely on this model. I also determined that this should be covered under N252508341. I was told by GM customer support that based on my vin it is not covered and they would not give me any further information. This is outrageous as this is the same defective part covered on their extended warranty.
On 2/5/2026, the 6.2 liter L87 engine in my 2022 ZR2 Silverado locked up and is currently located at Edwards Chevrolet on highway 280 in Birmingham, AL. While on I-65 in Birmingham, AL. and prior to locking up, the engine power decreased, and RPM's increased, followed by a dash message that oil temperature is high; pull over and idle. After idling the engine the dash message disappeared and oil pressure was good. We drove approx. 1.5 miles to a parking lot where the engine seized or locked up. The truck was towed to the above referenced dealership. The dealership confirmed the engine was locked up the next day. During the Summer of 2025, the dealership inspected the engine and performed an oil consumption test after I reported the engine had burned two quarts of oil between oil changes. Their fix was to transition from 0W-20 to 0W-40 oil, which has been adhered to since. The truck only has 56,000 miles on it.
Brought my 2022 Chevy Silverado 6.2 L engine into dealership for Safety Recall N252494001 L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion. Engine passed this initial inspection, Oil, Oil Filter and Oil cap was changed and was sent on my way. February 4th, 2026, Engines lost propulsion while traveling at highway speed, (75mph) causing a serious safety concern with rush hour traffic. After pulling over to the side of the highway, I reset the truck by cycling the ignition and was able to start the truck. On February 5th, 2026, Engine lost propulsion again at neighborhood speed, (20) in a construction site. Truck was blocking traffic at this point. Engine was unable to be started, transmission was locked in Parked and unable to be shifted. Had to have truck "dragged" out of traffic. Dealership was notified that I had possible catastrophic engine failure. I was advised by dealership to have it towed, at my expense to them. Truck was towed at a cost of $196 out of pocket. Tow cost an extra $50 due to the electronic shift no allowing for transmission to be shifted into neutral or linkage to be released by tow company. February 6th, 2026, dealership notified me that the engine had a catastrophic failure and would need to be replaced. Dealership has motor but trying to source one time use parts that were currently unavailable. No time frame given on sourcing those parts as of February 10th, 2026. Dealership/GM arranged for a rental car but financial limits set by GM does not include the ability to be given a truck as a rental. I am in construction and need a truck and have a once in a lifetime trip coming up March 13th. I am in need of a truck for the trip to haul my SxS and gear to another state. Very frustrated at GM for doing a piss poor job on rectifying the engine issue in the L87. The personal safety of loosing engine propulsion at 75mph during rush hour traffic could have ended in a bad accident.
I was driving on the highway and there was a sudden drop in power and hesitation in the engine. I slowed down too quickly on a busy highway and almost got rear ended. I took it to the shop and found out I had to replace the engine due to the cam and lifters were bad. It cost $12,000 to replace a four year engine with 148,000 miles. The time before that this happened, I had to replace the engine wiring harness
My wife borrowed my truck and went to Costco, after backing out of the parking spot the truck sputtered and stalled in the lane of travel. The truck would not start and more importantly she was not able to get it into neutral. The truck would simply state "shift conditions not met" and would stay in park. There is no options listed in the manual to get the vehicle into neutral manually. This "shift conditions not met" bricked my truck in the entrance / exit of a busy Costco. What would have happened if this happened on a main road or a freeway?
