The contact owns a 2011 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. There was an abnormally loud cranking sound upon starting the vehicle. While driving at highway speeds, there was a steady abnormal sound detected. The engine, traction control, low tire pressure, fuel, and oil warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, tires were inflated by an independent mechanic. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to three independent mechanics who determined that the steering angle sensor and steering wheel module needed reprogramming, an alignment was needed. Additionally, the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module), BCM (Body Control Module), and the drivers and front seat module needed to be replaced. The restraint control module, steering wheel module, and brake system had failed, and the powertrain control module (PCM) needed to be replaced. The contact was unsure if the manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
WHEN DRIVING I WOULD HEAR CLUNKING NOISES, WHEN TURNING AND BREAKING. MY AIR BAGS SENSOR IDEALLY OFF, AND I'M EXPERIENCING ELECTRICAL ISSUES.
TUESDAY NIGHT 1/22/2019, MY DAUGHTER DESCRIBED THAT HER CAR HAD LOST ALL POWER WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING DOWN A SMALL MOSTLY DESERTED STREET IN OUR TOWN WHEN SHE BRAKED AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN. SHE HAD AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TIME BRAKING AND TURNING THE CAR TO GET OFF OF THE ROADWAY. SO, THAT SAME EVENING, I DECIDED TO SEE IF IT HAPPENED TO ME. IT WAS NOTED THAT SHE HAD JUST OVER A QUARTER TANK OF GAS SO I THOUGHT MAYBE HER GAS GAUGE WAS WRONG SO I FILLED THE CAR. WE DROVE AROUND 6 MILES WHEN IT DID HAPPEN TO ME AS I BRAKED AND ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLES HEADED MY WAY WERE QUITE A BIT DOWN THE STREET, AND I ALLOWED MYSELF AMPLE TIME TO GET ACROSS WERE THIS TO HAPPEN. HOWEVER, THIS WAS AT NIGHT WHEN THAT STREET ISN'T BUSY. WE LIVE OFF OF THIS STREET SO AVOIDING DURING THE DAY ISN'T AN OPTION. DURING THE DAY WHEN TRAFFIC IS BUSY AND CONSTANT, THERE WOULD BE NO WAY TO ALLOW THAT MUCH TIME TO GET ACROSS SAFELY. IN THE MONTHS LEADING UP TO THESE POWER FAILURES, THERE WERE AT LEAST THREE INSTANCES WHERE WE WERE IN A DRIVE THRU OR STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT WHERE POWER WOULD BE LOST, BUT NEVER WHEN THE CAR WAS ACTUALLY IN MOTION AS HAPPENED TWICE ON 1/22/2019. I FOUND A FORUM WHERE THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED MANY TIMES NOT ONLY TO FORD, BUT TO THE NHTSA AND NOTHING BY WAY OF A RECALL HAS BEEN CALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM AND IT APPEARS THAT SOMEONE WILL BE KILLED PRIOR TO SOMETHING BEING DONE. I'VE READ THAT THE THROTTLE BODY SEEMS TO BE THE ISSUE HERE AND THAT FORD HAS DENIED A PROBLEM SAYING THEY'VE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM WHEN PEOPLE TAKE THESE CARS TO THE DEALERSHIPS. THE EVIDENCE IS ALL OVER THE INTERNET WHERE PEOPLE DESCRIBE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. THIS CAR WILL ONLY BE DRIVEN AS NEEDED AND ABSOLUTELY IS NOT ALLOWED ONTO THE HIGHWAY. PLEASE HELP RESOLVE THIS KNOWN PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED.
STALLS AND WON'T ACCELERATE WHILE GOING DOWN THE ROAD. JUST IDLES REAL ROUGH. CAN ONLY COAST TO A STOP. CAN'T STEER. WRENCH COMES ON THE DISPLAY. EVERYTHING I HAVE READ SAID IT IS PROBABLY THE THROTTLE BODY. HAS LESS THAN 40,000 MILES.
THE AWS LIGHT STAYS ON AND SAYS THE DRIVER STABILITY CONTROLS ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY. TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICING, CHARGED 800 PLUS AND THE ISSUE IS STILL OCCURRING. THEY CLAIM IT'S A SENSOR ISSUE BUT IT'S STILL HAPPENING! IF I TURN LEFT OR RIGHT THE WARNING LIGHT COMES ON, IF IT'S WET OR DRY THE LIGHT COMES ON AND WHEN BREAKING THE SUV SLIDES. WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER FORD AGAIN. NOT SURE OF THE ACTUAL DATE THE ISSUE STARTED HAPPENING.
DRIVING TO WORK ABOUT TEN MILES OF HIGHWAY, MY CAR STARTED RUNNING ROUGH AND SHAKING. I WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO A PARKING LOT THEN MY HEATER STOPPED WORKING A WARNING LIGHT CAME ON "ENGINE COOLANT TEMP" THEN IT DIED COMPLETELY IN A MATTER OF SECONDS, I SAW SOME SMOKE UNDER THE HOOD SO I CALLED FOR HELP. THERE WAS NO OTHER WARNING WHATSOEVER! THE MECHANIC TOLD US THAT THE WATER PUMP HAD GONE OUT AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT. IT SHOT COOLANT INTO THE ENGINE AND IT WAS TOTALED. AGAIN THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING AT ALL. NO SENSORS NO ANYTHING. I MAINTAIN MY VEHICLE WITH REGULAR OIL CHANGES ETC. AND IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY WARNING LIGHT I WOULD HAVE TAKEN IT TO MY MECHANIC IMMEDIATELY.
THIS IS THE SECOND REPORT I HAVE MADE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE FIRST WAS ON/ABOUT SET. 26, 2015. WHEN I WAS DRIVING, THE CAR IN MOTION, THE POWER TRAIN MALFUNCTION INDICATOR (A WRENCH) COMES ON, THE CAR LOSES ALL POWER, GOES DOWN TO PERHAPS 2 MILES PER HOUR, AND THEN STOPS. IT FEELS AS THOUGH THE POWER STEERING ALSO GOES OUT. WHEN THE CAR STOPS, IT SHAKES AND JERKS. YOU CANNOT ACCELERATE. I TURN THE MOTOR OFF AND THEN ON, "RESETTING" THE INDICATOR (PER THE FORD DEALERSHIP). AND THE ISSUE STOPS. IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN TODAY, OCT. 23RD. TWICE (IN THE MORNING AND AGAIN THIS AFTERNOON). I CALLED SAM GALLOWAY FORD IN FORT MYERS, FL AND WAS TOLD TO BRING IT IN ON NOV. 4TH. AGAIN, TODAY IS OCT. 23. I WAS TOLD, BY DANIELLE (SERVICE ADVISOR), THAT "SINCE IT IS NOT HAPPENING ALL THE TIME IT WAS FINE TO WAIT" UNTIL NOV. 4, 2015. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME, ANYONE I HAVE IN THE CAR, AND OTHER DRIVERS. ARE YOU GOING TO WAIT UNTIL SOMEONE GETS KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE? ON 9/9 I LEFT ORANGE BEACH AL TO DRIVE HOME TO JONESBORO AR WITH MY 2011 FORD EDGE - IT QUIT ON ME AT LEAST 45 TIMES. I WENT TO 2 FORD DEALERS, ONE MECHANIC ON THE ROAD. FIRST FORD DEALER HAD NO CLUE HOW TO FIX IT AND TOLD ME TO LEAVE 3 OR 4 DAYS. NEXT FORD DEALER WANTED 1500.00 4 HOURS AND MAYBE MORE. SO I KEPT DRIVING SINCE PART COSTS 184.00. WHEN DRIVING THE CAR JUST SHUTS OFF. NO POWER STEERING, NOW BRAKES NO NOTHING. IF I COULD I GOT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED ON MY FLASHERS. I WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND CRANKED IT BACK UP. SEVERAL TIMES ON THE ONE LANE ROAD HEADED INTO HATTIESBURG I ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED BY 18 WHEELERS AND NO SIDE AREA TO PULL OVER - MY CAR JUST QUIT - STOPPED AND I STOPPED. I GOT TO JACKSON 6 LANE ROAD 5:00 P.M RUSH HOUR AND MY CAR QUIT 6 TIMES AND I ALMOST GOT HIT THERE SEVERAL TIMES. MY WRENCH ICON COMES ON, MY OIL LIGHT CAME ON, MY ENGINE LIGHT IS ON NOW ALSO. THE CAR ABRUPTLY STOPS - THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS - MY HUSBAND GOT A CAR HAULER AND HEADED TOWARD ME AND MET ME OUT OF JACKSON. ONCE, IT STOPPED TO ABRUPTLY THAT MY DOGS HIT THE DASHBOARD IN THE FRONT SEAT AND WERE SO SCARED. THEY WERE IN THE BACKSEAT. I HAVE GRANDCHILDREN THAT RIDE WITH ME - SO CAN YOU IMAGINE THE ISSUES THAT COULD HAPPEN WHEN THIS CAR JUST SHUTS OFF. THIS IS A SEVERE PROBLEM THAT FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS AND SO DOES SAFERCAR.GOV. I CALLED FORD TODAY AND THEY ALL BUT LAUGHED AT ME AND SAID I NEEDED TO GET A NEW THROTTLE BODY INSTALLED AND PAY FOR IT THAT THE 2011 FORD EDGE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE CONSUMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM 13N03 THAT I FOUND ON A WEBSITE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS IMMEDIATELY. I COULD HAVE DIED YESTERDAY TRYING TO GET HOME - DID FORD CARE NO - THEY WILL WHEN SOMEONE DIES.

I WAS RIDING DOWN THE STREET AT A NORMAL SPEED, ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEARD A LOUD SOUND. THE CAR STARTED DRIVING REALLY FUNNY. I PULLED OVER ON A SIDE STREET TO SEE IF I HIT SOMETHING,. NOTHING WAS IN THE ROAD, I THEN LOOKED AT THE CAR.THIS IS WHEN I NOTICED MY TIRES ON MY PASSENGERS SIDE HAD BLOWN OUT. I HAD 2 FLAT TIRES. I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. I ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 MONTHS. THE TREAD ON THE TIRE WAS STILL GOOD, THE ROAD WAS OK, A LITTLE ROUGH BUT I DIDN'T SEE ANY NEED FOR 2 FLATS. THE STEERING ALSO MAKES A LOUD NOISE WHEN I TURN IT TO THE RIGHT AND TO THE LEFT. THIS IS NOW THE SEVENTH TIME I'VE LOST ALL POWER WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN, STEERING BECOMES UNCONTROLLABLE AND THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON. I'VE TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I'M BEING TOLD THE CAR HAS NO CODES OF WHAT HAPPENED AND THEY CAN'T REPAIR. I'M NOT SURE HOW A COMPUTER DOESN'T REGISTER A LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT OR HOW IT'S NOT HARD CODED SOMEWHERE IN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM THAT THE CAR JUST CUT OUT AT 35MPH TO 60 MPH I HAVE NO WARNING THAT THIS IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN, I LOST MY STEERING, CAR SHUTS DOWN, BRAKES DO NOT WORK. FORD HAS NO IDEA ON HOW TO FIX THIS. I PULL OVER AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES CRANK UP AND GO, SOMETIMES IT DOES IT 5 TO 6 TIMES IN A ROW BEFORE I CAN GET TO THE DEALER. ALSO, MY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR ALWAYS KEEPS THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT ON, FORD HAS NO CLUE HOW TO FIX THIS EITHER- THE INTERIOR LIGHTS STAYS ON THE WHOLE TIME ALSO. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN SEVERAL TIMES FOR THIS ALSO AND THEY CAN'T FIX IT. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED AND IT WAS GREAT FOR ONE YEAR AND NOW IT HAS MANY PROBLEMS WHICH I BELIEVE IT DID WHEN I BOUGHT IT. VEHICLE FAILED ANNUAL SAFETY INSPECTION AT APPROXIMATELY 40K MILES. DEALER EXPLAINED THAT FRONT TIE ROD ENDS HAD FAILED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR SERVICE. UPON RETURNING FOR SERVICE ON THE SCHEDULED DATE AT APPROXIMATELY 45K MILES, DEALER DISCOVERED LEAK IN FRONT RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY AND EXPLAINED ENTIRE FRONT RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY NEEDS REPLACEMENT. AS OF THIS REPORT, THE VEHICLE IS STILL WITH THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE PART TO BE REPLACED IS ON BACK-ORDER. AFTER QUICK INTERNET SEARCH, DISCOVERED INSTANCES OF SAME PROBLEM IN STEERING & SUSPENSION WITH OTHER 2011 FORD EDGE AND 2011 LINCOLN MDX AWD VEHICLES. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN ADDITION TO BEING EXTREMELY COSTLY IN A RELATIVELY NEW VEHICLE FOR MYSELF AND OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS. THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. *TR
AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS MAKING A SQUEALING NOISE AND THE STEERING WAS SLUGGISH. AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES, THE SQUEALING NOISE STOP AND THE STEERING FELT NORMAL. THE SAME THING HAPPENS EVERY TIME DURING A COLD START. *TR
IN DECEMBER OF 2013 I NOTICED THE STEERING ON MY FORD EDGE WAS ACTING UP AND OCCASIONALLY THE POWER STEERING WOULD GO AWAY FOR A SHORT PERIOD TIME. THIS ISSUE ALMOST CAUSED A COUPLE ACCIDENTS BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD NOT REACT WHEN TURNED. THE DEALERSHIP ADDED MORE POWER STEERING FLUID AND THE ISSUE WENT AWAY FOR A LITTLE WHILE BUT WOULD STILL SOMETIMES SHOW THE SAME SIGNS OF BEING HARD TO STEER. A FEW MONTHS LATER A DIFFERENT FORD DEALER FOUND A SMALL POWER STEERING FLUID LEAK AND REPAIRED A HOSE UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THAT DID NOT COMPLETELY SOLVE THE PROBLEM. LAST TIME INTO THE DEALER FOR AN OIL CHANGE JUST PAST WARRANTY, THE SAME DEALER FOUND A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP, BUT NOW THEY WANT US TO PAY THE FULL COST OF THE REPAIR SINCE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. WE TRIED TO TALK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE BUT THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE ISSUE UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THE ISSUE WAS FIRST BROUGHT UP WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I FEEL THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO A RECALL NOT TO MENTION THE FORD SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND FIX AN ISSUE THAT WAS BROUGHT TO THEIR ATTENTION BEFORE THE WARRANTY WAS UP. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 FORD EDGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE BECAME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 37,000.
THE POWER STEERING DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY AT LOW SPEEDS. THIS IS IDENTFIED IN FORD'S TSB 10-21-1 STEERING THE VEHICLE IS VERY DIFFICULT. I'M CONCERNED THAT THE ABILITY TO PROPERLY CONTROL THE VEHICLE AT LOW OR HIGH SPEEDS MAY BECOME A PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. BY ISSUING A TSB, I BELIEVE FORD IS ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THERE IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM - A MAJOR COMPONENT OF VEHICLE SAFETY. THE ADVANCETRAC (STABILITY/ANTI-ROLLOVER SYSTEM) APPEARS TO HAVE FAILED INDICATED BY THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH. INTERMITTENTLY, THE WARNING LIGHT TURNS ON AND THEN OFF WHILE DRIVING OR PARKED WITH ENGINE IDLING. BASED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, I BELIEVE THERE IS A FAULT IN THE STABILITY SYSTEM. FORD TECHNICIANS CANNOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. MANY OTHER OWNERS APPEAR TO BE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE FORD EDGE AND F-150 TRUCKS AMONG OTHER FORD VEHICLES. THE FUEL SYSTEM DISPLAYS A WARNING THAT THE FUEL INLET REQUIRES CHECKING DUE TO A VAPOR LEAK. FORD REPLACED A TRADITIONAL FUEL CAP ASSEMBLY WITH A CAPLESS SYSTEM WHICH APPEARS TO NOT SEAL FULLY OR ALLOWS DEBRIS TO KEEP THE SYSTEM FROM REMAINING FULLY SEALED. THERE APPEARS TO BE MANY OTHER OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THIS SAME WARNING LIGHT WITH A MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED THAT CANNOT BE TURNED OFF. IF FUEL VAPOR IS LEAKING, THERE IS RISK OF VEHICLE FIRE OR EXPLOSION. *JS
