FORD DEALER HAS ATTEMPTED 3 TIMES TO REPAIR BRAKES GOING ON THE 4TH WHEN THEY GET THE NEW BRAKE PADS IN,THEY TOLD US ABOUT A MONTH FROM NOW.THE VEHICLE SHAKES WHEN SLOWING FROM 55 TO 40 MPH. AND CAN GET SCARY AT TIMES.IT ALSO VIBRATES AT 65 MPH.WE CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE ABOUT OUR PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD US THAT DON MCCLAIN SAID THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY FIXED THE BRAKES,WHICH IS A LIE. THEY ARE GIVING US THE RUNAROUND TO AVOID OUR STATES LEMON LAW.AS FAR AS WE CAN TELL NO OTHER FORD ESCAPES HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THANK YOU.
WHEN DRIVING AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING VEHICLE WILL STALL COMPLETELY, CAUSING LOSS OF POWER. CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED DEALER, DEALER HAS REPLACED IGNITION SWITCH, BUT PROBLEM STILL OCCURS.*AK
BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON DASHBOARD. ALSO, VEHICLE JUST SHUTDOWN WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. WHEN CONSUMER APPLIED BRAKES PEDAL WAS NORMAL. SHE TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP. MECHANIC TOLD HER SHE NEEDED A MASTER CYLINDER. *AK
THE ENGINE STALLED AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER OF 2001. I WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 25MPH WHEN IT STALLED AND HAD TO PULL THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. THE VEHICLE WENT SIDEWAYS AND THE VEHICLE BEHIND BARELY AVOIDED HITTING ME. THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN TOLD ME THAT THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I THEN CONTACTED FORDS CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS OF THIS NATURE REPORTED AND THAT IF THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT DETERMINE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. I WAS EXTREMELY LUCKY THAT I WAS NOT HIT EITHER TIME. *AK

GAS FUMES IN CABIN FIRST TRIP FOR REPAIR INTAKE GASKET REPLACED, BACK IN SHOP SAME PROBLEM AROSE TWO DAYS LATER, CAR HAS BEEN THERE TWO DAYS WITH NO RESOLUTION, DEALERSHIP IS IN CONTACT WITH FORD TRYING TO RESOLVE PROBLEM NO RESULTS AT THIS TIME, VEHICLE STILL IN SHOP, WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A 2000 FORD TAURUS WHICH WAS IN THE SHOP FIVE TIMES WITH NO CURE, CAR WAS BOUGHT BACK BY FORD AFTER ARBITRATION. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED, BREATHING THE GAS FUMES CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS. *AK
2 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT MY CAR BRAND NEW I WENT OUT TO START IT, IT WOULD NOT START AND THE EMISSION LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR SOUNDS LIKE IT IS TRYING TO START, THE ONLY WAY I COULD GET THE CAR TO START IS HOLD THE IGNITION. I SMELLED GAS AFTER THE CAR STARTED. I INFORMED FORD ABOUT THE PROBLEM, THEY FOUND NOTHING BUT REPLACED MY STARTER EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T THE PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR ALMOST 3YRS MY WARRANTY IS READY TO EXPIRE AND FORD STILL CANNOT FIX/FIND THE PROBLEM. THIS CAR HAS LEFT ME STRANDED MORE THEN ONCE, I EVEN HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AFTER WORKING HRS. I WAS TOLD BY THEIR SERVICE MANAGER THE CAR STARTED, WE FOUND NOTHING WRONG. I EVEN TOLD THE DEALERSHIP THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP OVER 3X'S IT IS A LEMON AND I WANT A NEW CAR OR MY MONEY BACK. I WAS INFORMED ACCORDING TO FORD WE CANNOT FIND A PROBLEM THEREFORE, THE LEMON LAW DOES NOT EXIST AND FORD WILL NOT JUST TAKE THE CAR BACK. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR TO 2 FORD DEALERSHIPS, THE SAD PART THE ORGINAL PLACE I BOUGHT IT FROM TREATED MY VERY NASTY SINCE I WOULD TAKE MY CAR FOR SERVICE AT A CLOSER ONE AND HAVE THEM LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM. FORD IS FORD DOESN'T MATTER WHAT DEALER I USE DOES IT? I AM VERY DISSATISFIED AND WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER FORD AGAIN!! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!
WHILE TRAVELING WHEN AND DEPRESSING BRAKE PEDAL, PEDAL WENT TO FLOORBOARD AND VEHICLE LOST BRAKE POWER. *AK CONSUMER ALSO EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH PASSENGER AND DRIVER WINDOW, AND ALSO A FUEL LINE CLIP FAILED CAUSING THE MOTOR TO LOOSE POWER AND FUEL WAS PUMPED OVER THE HOT ENGINE. *JB
DRIVING DOWN A SLIGHT GRADE THE ENGINE JUST QUIT ON SIX OCCASIONS AT THE SAME LOCATION ADJACENT TO A CELLULAR ANTENNA TOWER. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER WHO SAID THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER CODE INDICATED INTERRUPTION IN THE ANTI-THEFT SMART KEY SYSTEM. WHEN THE SAME PROBLEM REOCCURRED, THE DEALER HAD THE CAR FOR A WEEK AND FORD'S SERVICE HOTLINE TOLD THEM TO SHIELD THE IGNITION AND ADD GROUNDING TO THAT ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE ENGINE HAS SHUT DOWN ONCE AGAIN AND DEALER WANTS US TO BRING CAR BACK SO THEY CAN TRY TO DUPLICATE FAILURE WHILE HOOKED UP TO THEIR SERVICE COMPUTER.OCCURRED

DRIVING AROUND 40MPH, AND CAR HAS STALLED THREE TIMES ON ME NOW WITH LOSS OF STEERING AND BRAKES, MOST RECENTLY ON 10/11/2001. FORD SAYS THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG.*AK
VEHICLE WAS AT STOP SIGN, WAS HIT ON PASSENGER'S SIDE, NEITHER AIBAG DEPLOYED, VEHICLE TOTALLED. *AK
FORD SHIPPED VEHICLE WITH FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRES. NEITHER FORD NOR FIRESTONE HAVE ADMITTED RESPONSIBILITY OR CAUSE OF FAILURE OF THESE TIRES ON FORD EXPLORER. I AM UNWILLING TO ACCEPT A POTENTIALLY UNSAFE TIRE ON A NEW VEHICLE. THE TIRES ARE NOT ONLY POTENTIALLY UNSAFE, BUT HAVE LOWER THE VALUE OF MY VEHICLE. CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING 55MPH AND WENT OFF THE ROAD. AS VEHICLE SLID DOWN SIDEWAYS INTO AN EMBANKMENT, IT SPUN AROUND. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DEALER SAID SENSOR WAS RIPPED OFF FROM WHAT THEY DONT KNOW. CONSUMER WENT BACK TO ACCIDENT SITE AND FOUND THE AIR BAG SENSOR. VEHICLE HAS BEEN RULED TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY.*AK

RAW FUEL SMELL IN CABIN WITH HEATER ON AND AT STOP LIGHT/IDELING. INTAKE GASKETS, FUEL RAIL AND INJECTORS REPLEACED. PARTS RETURNED TO FACTORY. *AK
IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS - GOING DOWNHILL AT 35MPH VEHICLE STALLED, LOSS OF PS/PB, HEADLIGHTS/RADIO REMAINED ON, ENGINE/OIL LIGHT ILLUMINATED - VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALER, DEALER UNABLE TO REPLICATE PROBLEM, INDICATED THAT VEHICLE "STARTED RIGHT UP" - 1 WK LATER, VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN, SAME AS BEFORE, THIS TIME SHUT OFF VEHICLE COMPLETELY AND VEHICLE STARTED UP AGAIN - TODAY SEATBELT LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND BELLS WERE RINGING THOUGH DRIVER WAS SEATBELTED. VEHICLE DID NOT STALL DURING THIS EPISODE. AFTER READING OTHER COMPLAINTS, I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND WILL PUT VEHICLE UP FOR SALE.
CONSUMER IS UNABLE TO USE RADIO BECAUSE TRANSMISSION PAWL IS IN THE WAY AND IS TOO FAR, CAUSING CONSUMER TO SHIFT GEAR WHILE DRIVING.*AK
FUEL LEAKAGE AROUND FUEL INJECTORS - STRONG GAS FUMES; DEALER HAS TRIED TO CORRECT TWICE AND CANNOT CORRECT PROBLEM. THEY HAVE ORDERED NEW O-RINGS FOR FUEL INJECTORS BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. *AK
I HAVE HAD BRAKE LIQUID LEAKING FROM THE ENGINE CONTAINER SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR AROUND 2001. I NOTIFIED THE DEALERSHIP AND THE FIRST TIME THEY SAID THE CAP MALFUNCTIONED AND THEY REPLACED THE CAP, THE SECOND TIME THEY SAID I OVERFILLED THE CONTAINER BUT IT NEVER STOPPED AND TO THIS DAY THE CONTAINER LEAKS. I ALSO HAVE HAD THE CAR STALL ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. I THOUGHT THIS TO BE JUST A FREAK ACCIDENT UNTIL I READ THESE POSTINGS AND IT APPEARS THE PROBLEM IS WIDE SPREAD. ONE TIME IT STALLED WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 81 AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO WRECK BUT MANAGED TO PULL OVER WITH OUT AN ACCIDENT. NOW MY CAR HAS A HARD TIME STARTING FOR NO REASON. AT FIRST I HAD THE BATTERY REPLACED, BUT THE PROBLEM JUST GOT WORSE. NOW I SOMETIMES SPEND 20 MIN TRYING TO START THE CAR, WHEN IT FINALLY STARTS, IT STALLS AND WHEN ITS FINISHED STALLING, IT ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN AND STAYS THAT WAY FOR SEVERAL MIN. UNTIL NOW I JUST THOUGHT THESE WERE RARE OCCURRENCES BUT NOW I DON'T THINK THEY ARE. I BELIEVE THEY ARE ALL SAFETY PROBLEMS AND NOT ONCE WAS I NOTIFIED OF ANY RECALL TO FIX. MY COOLANT LIGHT CAME ON OVER 8 MONTHS AGO AND IS STILL ON DESPITE HAVING IT CHECKED AND NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND.*CN
VEHICLE LOST ELECTICAL POWER, INCLUDING IGNITION WHILE TRAVELING AT 65 MPH. IF THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN IN THE PASSING LANE OR IN A TUNNEL UPCOMING IN 35 MILES, THE ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY SERIOUS AND VERY LIKELY CATASTROPHIC. VEHICLE WAS TOWED 100 MILES TO GIBBONS FORD. IT REMAINS THERE AS OF 9 JAN 01.*AK
THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME ITS A PROBLEM WITH THE COMPUTER AND THE FORD ENGINEERS ARE WORKING ON IT. THE CAR CHUGS WHEN GOING LONG DISTANCES WHEN YOU TRY TO ACCELERATE. I HAVE HAD THE PROBLEM SINCE I GOT THE CAR.*AK
FUEL SMELL AFTER RESTARTING VEHICLE WHEN ENGINE IS WARM. FUEL ODOR VERY STRONG! THIS HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE A PROBLEM ON NUMEROUS ESCAPES AND TRIBUTES, AS SEEN ON THE YAHOO FORDESCAPECLUB AND IN THE EDMUNDS.COM DISCUSSION THREAD FOR THE FORD ESCAPE. IF I TURN THE VENT OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE SMELL GOES AWAY. NOTE THAT MY DEALERSHIP AND SEVERAL OTHERS HAVE CLAIMED NOT TO BE ABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE, BUT SEVERAL PEOPLE ON THE FORDESCAPECLUB SITE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TIGHTEN THE BOLTS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD (AS FACING ENGINE) TO LIMIT THE SMELL. MY DEALER EVENTUALLY REPORTED THAT THIS WAS CAUSED BY A "WEEPING" INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. I AM CONCERNED THAT UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS THE FUEL SEEPING FROM THE GASKET COULD IGNITE AND CAUSE AN UNDER-HOOD FIRE.*AK

WHEN TRYING TO SHIFT GEARS IT GETS STUCK. WHEN THE GEAR IS IN REVERSE IF YOU PUT YOUR FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL THE ENGINE JUST REVVS. YOU HAVE TO SLAM THE GEAR SHIFTER UP AND DOWN TO GET IT INTO THE DRIVE POSITION. *AK
WHEN VEHICLE HAS BEEN PARKED CONSUMER CAN SMELL GASOLINE . CONSUMER CAN NOT FIND WHERE LEAK IS COMING FROM. CONSUMER IS GETTING LESS GAS MILEAGE EVER SINCE THIS INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER SAID THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. *AK
VEHICLE EXPERIENCING PROBLEM WITH ICE DEVELOPING ON FRONT WHEELS WHICH CAUSES SEVERE VIBRATION WHEN DRIVING. DEALER / MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED AT THIS TIME. *AK
CONSUMER SMELLS GAS FUMES INSIDE VEHICLE, MOST OFTEN IN MORNING, IF FAN IS ON OR DURING SHORT TRIPS WHEN TURNING VEHICLE ON/OFF. DEALER CHECKED IT A MONTH AGO AND FOUND NOTHING. PROBLEM IS STILL OCCURS AND THEY SEEM NOT TO CARE. *AK THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND THE CAUSE FOR THE FUME INSIDE THE VEHICLE. *YH
CABLE CAME OFF CLUTCH PEDAL UNDER THE DASH. PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO FLOOR AND WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT CARE. CABLE WAS REPLACED BY VEHICLE OWNER, BUT FAILED TO STAY ON 2 MORE TIMES.
EXPERIENCING AN ODOR AND FUMES COMING IN THROUGH VENTS. *AK
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD GET STUCK IN RIGHT TURNS WHEN TURNING RIGHT. WHEN TURNING LEFT THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT FULLY TURN UNLESS FORCED INTO THE NEEDED RANGE. FINALLY STEERING WHEEL GOT STUCK IN A RIGHT TURN AND HAD TO BE TOWED. LESS THAN 24 HOURS OF OWNERSHIP AND LESS THAN ME DRIVING 15 MILES.*AK
THE SHIFT LEVER WHEN PLACED IN THE "D" DRIVE POSITION DOES NOT LOCK IN PLACE. ADDITIONALLY THE SHIFT LEVEL EXTENDS 3-4" INTO THE RADIO AND CONTROL PANEL FOR OTHER INSTRUMENTS LIKE REAR DEFOGGER AND PARKING LIGHT SWITHCH. IF SHIFTER IS BUMPED WHILE TRYING TO CHANGE RADIO OR TO PLAY A CD OR CASSETTE, THE SHIFTER EASILY GETS KNOCKED OUT OF POSITION. I HAVE REPOTED THIS TO MY DEALER, THEY CHECKED OTHER ESCAPES ON THE LOT. THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I EMAILED FORD DIRECTLY ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, AND THEY HAVE NOT AS YET RESPONDED. I BELIVE THAT THIS PROBLEM CAN CAUSE A SERIOUS PROBLEM IF NOT FIXED.
WHEN TRANSMISSION GEAR IS SHIFTED FROM NEUTRAL INTO REVERSE NOTHING HAPPENS, ENGINE REVVS, BUT VEHICLE DOES NOT MOVE. CONSUMER HAS TO SHIFT BACK AND FORTH UNTIL VEHICLE IS FINALLY IN GEAR. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER 3 TIMES, CANNOT REMEDY PROBLEM. *AK THE PROBLEM ALSO OCCURS FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE. THE GEAR INDICATOR LIGHT GOES OFF TOO. *YH
NHTSA:VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE A MIS-ASSEMBLED OR INCORRECTLY MANUFACTURED NUT THAT ATTACHES THE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY TO THE STEERING COLUMN. THE NUT COULD BE UPSIDE DOWN IN THE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY, WHICH COULD OVERSTRESS THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT WHEN THE NUT IS TIGHTENED. IN ADDITION, SOME OF THE NUTS MAY HAVE BEEN CRACKED DURING MANUFACTURE RESULTING IN THE NUT FRACTURING WHEN IT IS TIGHTENED DURING VEHICLE ASSEMBLY.DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE STEERING WHEEL RETENTION ARMATURE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE STEERING COLUMN TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION.*AK
WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NAMED IN THIS COMPLAINT IN OCT. 2000 AND WITHIN FOUR DAYS OF THE PURCHASE RETURNED IT TO THE DEALER BECAUSE WE EXPERIENCED GASOLINE FUMES (NOT EXHAUST) COMING THROUGH THE AIR VENTS WITH EITHER HEAT/AIR OR A/C ON. THE DEALER KEPT THE CAR FOR OVER A WEEK AND SAID THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT, THOUGH SERVICE PEOPLE SMELLED THE GAS FUME SMELL. WE RETURNED THE CAR A SECOND TIME AS THE SMELL WAS GETTING STRONGER. IT OCCURS ON WARM STARTS, NEVER WHEN THE CAR IS STARTED UP COLD. THE FUME SMELL IS APPARENT FOR 5-10 MINUTES, AND THINS OUT WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING AT HIGH SPEEDS AND AIR IS COMING IN. THE SECOND TIME THE DEALER HAD THE CAR THEY KEPT IT A WEEK AND COULD NOT FIX IT. THEY AGREED TO REPLACE THE VEHICLE WITH ANOTHER. TEN DAYS LATER WE TOOK OWNERSHIP OF ANOTHER VEHICLE EXACTLY LIKE THIS ONE. FORTY-EIGHT HOURS INTO DRIVING IT THE GAS SMELL WAS NOTICEABLE AGAIN. WE NOTIFIED THE DEALER WHO SAID THAT FORD HAS NO FIX FOR IT. THE DEALER HAD NO COMMENT OR IDEA ON WHEN/IF/HOW THIS WOULD BE RESOLVED. WE WENT OUT TO THE INTERNET AND IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS, EDMUNDS.COM AND YAHOO ESCAPE CLUB AMONG OTHERS, WE FOUND TESTIMONIAL AFTER TESTIMONIAL OF CUSTOMERS OWNING THE V-6 ESCAPE, AND THE MIRROR CAR, THE MAZDA TRIBUTE, HAVING EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEMS WE HAVE EXPERIENCED. THIS IS CLEARLY NOT AN ISOLATED EXCEPTION WITH OUR VEHICLE. ONE PERSON EXPERIENCED HIS CAR BURNING TO THE GROUND WITH 800 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. WE WANT TO ALERT YOU TO THIS PROBLEM AND THE FACT THAT FORD/MAZDA ARE BEING TOTALLY UNCOMMUNICATIVE TO THE CUSTOMER ABOUT THIS SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW. WE DO NOT KNOW IF THE CAR IS EVEN SAFE TO DRIVE. OUR DEALER HAS NO INFORMATION ON A FIX AND HAS NOT OFFERED TO TAKE THIS CAR BACK.
