I had just started up my 05 Ford hybrid Escape reversed out of a parking space, applied my brakes and a loud warning noise went off, the ABS light & the Brake light went on, then I tried to brake while backing out of the parking stall. I had no brakes, petal went all the way to the floor. I shifted into drive to pull forward. The car wouldn’t stop petal just went right to the floor, had very little resistance. I almost drove through the front glass doors of the P/T office across from the pharmacy in Cool, CA. The roads are mountainous windy and steep. I was definitely scared for my safety. I had to coast very slowly on the way home. I was on my way to work but instead I dropped it off at home and called ride share to take me to work! I had to use my emergency brake to make the turn up my dirt road. I still had little to no brakes to stop the car. I parked it and haven’t driven it since. Much to dangerous to drive this car. I could have easily been killed not having brakes. It Showed no codes, had no warning at all. I just bought the car about 6 months prior. The next day it was as if it never happened.
Brake Hydraulic Control Unit failed loss of braking.
Abs and master cylinder causing an unsafe braking condition hard brake pedal making it very difficult to stop the car. I replaced the entire brake system including the master cylinder assembly with pedal travel sensor attached. As recommended by Ford dealership. Then I was told that the brake system system had to be bled 2 times. Well after doing this 3 times and replacing the calipers and pads and rotors again. The same situation exists. Now I am told that this car has a different problem and a bulletin was issued by Ford stating that this is a problem with Ford Escape hybrid has to be reprogrammed to allow the master cylinder assembly to link up with the computer to rectify the issue. My car has 42000 miles on the vehicle and I is very dangerous to drive because of the unreliable braking action. Ford does not acknowledge the problem. But there are many people who have had this same issue. What can I do ? Please help me.
COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. DRIVEN HOME AT 40 MPH AND THE BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THERE WAS A BEEP. THERE WERE THEN NO BRAKES AT ALL. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND COAST TO A STOP. TURNED OFF THE TRUCK AND STARTED IT AGAIN AND IT HAD BRAKES. ON THIS LAST INCIDENT, THE SAME THING IN THE SAME ORDER HAPPENED. THIS PROBLEM IS VERY DANGEROUS. IT IS INTERMITTENT THUS MAKING IT HARD TO DIAGNOSE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE BRAKES FAILED. THE CONTACT HAD TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. ALSO, THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO JERRY'S FORD ALEXANDRIA (6510 LITTLE RIVER TURNPIKE, ALEXANDRIA, VA 22312, (703) 256-5000), BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 116,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WHILE COMING UP TO A STOP SIGN THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO CARS IN FRONT OF ME AS THE CAR CONTINUED TO ROLL PASS THE STOP SIGN. FLOORING THE BRAKES CAUSED THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN SLOWLY. I ENDED UP PULLING OVER IMMEDIATELY, TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND INSPECTING THE VEHICLE. I SAW NO CLEAR INDICATION OF ANYTHING BEING WRONG. WHEN I TURNED BACK ON THE VEHICLE EVERYTHING WAS FINE, UNTIL THE SAME THING HAPPENED THE NEXT DAY. I TOOK THE CAR TO A FEW CAR SHOPS BUT NO ONE COULD FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. THE CAR WAS EVEN TAKEN FOR A TEST DRIVE BY THE MECHANIC BUT PERFORMED WITH NO PROBLEMS. ONE OF THE SHOPS RECOMMENDED I REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER OR THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT BUT COULD NOT GUARANTEE THE PROBLEM WOULD NEVER OCCUR AGAIN. I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE PAYING SO MUCH FOR A NON GUARANTEED JOB SO UNFORTUNATELY I AM STILL DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND THE BRAKES CONTINUES TO STOP WORKING AT RANDOM TIMES.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKING SYSTEM FAILED TO OPERATE AS INTENDED. THE CRASH OCCURRED WHILE THE CONTACT WAS EN ROUTE TO COCCIA FORD LINCOLN INC (LOCATED AT 577 E MAIN ST, WILKES-BARRE, PA 18702, (570) 823-8888) TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V526000 (HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO BE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ISSUED CASE NUMBER: CAS-14733790. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 174,109.
HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT FAILED. HCU. LITTLE OR NO BRAKES, CITY STREET
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATE (WITH SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM DISPLAYED) AND BRAKE PEDAL GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. BRAKES FAIL TO MANUAL BRAKES ONLY, VERY SENSITIVE AND WILL LOCK THE WHEELS UP; TOUCHY WITH NO REAL FEED BACK, JUST APPLIED OR OFF WITH SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE REQUIRED. HAPPENED WHEN PULLING INTO A GAS STATION AND NEARLY WENT PAST THE PUMP, BUT SKIDDED TO A STOP INSTEAD. SYSTEM RESETS WITH EACH KEY CYCLE ON/OFF. IT IS SOMEWHAT INTERMITTENT. WHILE WAITING FOR MY FORD APPOINTMENT (CAVALIER FORD IN CHESAPEAKE, VA), I DUPLICATED THE EVENT SEVERAL TIMES UNDER A CONTROLLED, OPEN PARKING LOT TEST AND DRIVE TO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP RAN DIAGNOSTICS, AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE. THE RECOMMEND REPLACING BRAKE LINES, THEN MASTER CYLINDER, THEN HCU. REPAIRS IN ORDER ARE $615, $1400, AND OVER $4900. DIAGNOSTICS RAN $130...WITH NO DEFINITIVE ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM.
BRAKE LIGHT BEEPS AND THE BRAKES SUDDENLY GO OUT SO THAT YOU CAN BARELY STOP THE CAR.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, I HEAR AN ALARM FOR "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM", AND LOSE ALL POWER TO MY BRAKES. PEDAL IS DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR WITH MINIMAL ABILITY TO STOP.
WHEN BRAKE PEDAL IS APPLIED WITH CONSTANT PRESSURE, BRAKES WOULD ENGAGE THEN FAIL TO ENGAGE FOR SHORT SECONDS, THEN ENGAGE AGAIN, SYMPTOMS ARE INTERMITTENT. SOME TIMES IT WOULD TRIGGER A BRAKE RELATED DTC. TECHNICIAN DETERMINED IT WAS A FAILED HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND WAS TOLD IT WAS COMMON AND OCCURRED ON A NUMBER OF THE SAME MODEL VEHICLES FROM 2005 TO 2012.
ABS LIGHT ON, VERY WEAK AND DIMINISHED BRAKING POWER, ALMOST NOT STOPPING, VEHICLE WAS OFF, THEN NOTICED UPON STARTUP, 123K MILES ON VEHICLE, FORD STATES IT COULD BE UP TO A $5K REPAIR WHICH FAR EXCEEDES THE VALUE OF THIS VEHICLE, SUSPECT PART IS THE HCU HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT WHICH PRESSURIZES THE BREAK SYSTEM BEFORE START UP, ALSO NOTICED THIS PUMP ISN'T COMING ON ANYMORE, FORD SAYS THEY WON'T COVER ANYTHING OF REPAIR, NO MORE FORDS OR CHEVY'S FOR ME!, YOU HAVE TO KILL AT LEAST 125 PEOPLE BEFORE THEY WILL RECALL ANYTHING JUST LIKE THE $2.25 IGNITION KEY RECALL, WHAT ABOUT THE 180+ PEOPLE FORDS PINTO EXPLODING FUEL TANKS, BECAUSE OF BREAK AWAY FUEL NECKS, LIVES AREN'T WORTH $8EA, TO INSTALL THE RUBBER BLADDER ARE THEY?, THANKS FOR MAKING ANOTHER THROW AWAY CAR JUST LIKE THE CHEVY VEGA, NOW FORD HAS ANOTHER TO ADD TO PINTO, EDSEL, MAVERICK? WHERE DID THEY GO? WHICH ONE'S NEXT? DON'T BUY HYBRID, NOT GOOD TECHNOLGY, DOESNT EVEN GET VERY GOOD MILEAGE , 26? IS ALL I GOT!, THANKS AGAIN FORD MOTORS, HOPE HENRY IS ROLLING OVER IN HEAVEN FOR YOUR IDIOT ENGINEERS THAT WOULD DESIGN A SYSTEM THAT IS BEYOND ECONOMICAL SENSE TO REPAIR.!!!
BRAKES GO STIFF AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE DRIVING FOR NO PRESENTED REASON AND CAUSE A SHOCK TO DRIVER AND HAVE TO LET GO OF BRAKES THEN PRESS DOWN TO SEE IF THEY WILL WORK. HAPPENS IN MOST IF NOT ALL KIDS OF CONDITIONS, NOT JUST ONE SPECIFIC KIND OF SITUATION. HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS.
INTERMITTENT LOSS OF BRAKING OVER THE PAST 12 MONTHS, WITH THE 3RD OCCURRENCE RESULTING IN A COLLISION ON JUNE 28, 2016 ON A CITY STREET. VEHICLE HAS HAD INTERMITTENT BRAKE AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS WITH NO DIAGNOSTIC CODES, AND WARNING LIGHTS EVENTUALLY RESET WITH NO ADDITIONAL ACTION TAKEN. BRAKE SYSTEM HAS BEEN SERVICED SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT RESOLUTION.
IN NORMAL DRIVING, WITH NO WARNING, "BRAKE" AND "ABS" WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATE ALONG WITH "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" DISPLAY. CONSIDERABLE EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND STOPPING DISTANCE IS 2-3 TIMES NORMAL. I ENDED UP IN A DITCH BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP IN TIME.
BOTH FRONT BRAKE CALIPER FLEXIBLE BRAKE LINES FAILED AT THE SAME TIME. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I WAS AT LOW SPEED, HOOKING UP MY TRAILER AT THE TIME. NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THE BRAKE FLUID DUMPED ON THE INSIDE OF BOTH FRONT TIRES.
AFTER DRIVING EVEN SHORT DISTANCES, THE VEHICLE IS REAL REAL HOT.HAD NEW BRAKES PUT ON AND THEY STILL SQUEEL
COMPUTER CONTROLLING THE BRAKES MALFUNCTION. I WAS ON A STATE HYWAY WHEN THE DASH LIGHT CAME ON TO WARN OF BRAKE FAILURE, AND A COUPLE OF SECONDS LATER I HAD NO BRAKES. I TURNED THE MOTOR OFF AND BACK ON, AND I HAD BRAKES. THIS HAPPENED OFF AND ON UNTIL I WAS ON LADSON ROAD GOING TO A FRIENDS HOUSE AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK AND I HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK AND BE TOWED HOME. THIS SCARES ME AND I WILL NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL IT IS FIXED. FORD SAYS IT WILL COST 5000.00 TO FIX IT. I HAVE TO GET MY SON TO CARRY EVERYWHERE. I AM 82 YEARS OLD AND NEED MY CAR !!!!....UPDATED 06/15/16 *BF
