GAS GAUGE NOT FUCNTIONING FOR MOST 1994 FORD EXPLORERS. *PH
THE SPARE TIRE IS SUPPORTED UNDER THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE BY A STEEL CABLE SUPPORT SYSTEM. I WAS TRAVELING ON A FREEWAY AND HIT A BUMP. THE CABLE SUPPORTING THE SPARE TIRE BROKE. APPARENTLY THE CABLE HAD RUSTED AND BECAME WEAK. THE TIRE DROPPED ONTO THE ROAD SURFACE. THERE WAS A NUMBER OF VEHICLES DIRECTELY BEHIND ME AT THE TIME. THE TIRE BOUNCED APPROXIMATELY 3 - 4 FEET IN THE AIR IN FRONT THE VEHICLE DIRECTLY BEHIND MY VEHICLE. LUCKLY ALL OF THE OTHER VEHICLES MISSED THE TIRE. THE TIRE ROLLED OFF OF THE ROAD AND INTO THE DITCH. AFTER RETURNING TO THE LOCATION OF WHERE THE TIRE DROPPED OFF THE VEHICLE, I SEARCHED THE ROAD AND DITCH, AND WAS UNABLE TO FIND THE SPARE TIRE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND CAN CAUSE VEHICLE DAMAGE AND PERSONAL INJURIES. AFTER REPORTING THE PROBLEM, AND ASKING ABOUT REPLACEMENT PARTS AT A LOCAL FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT, I WAS TOLD THAT I WAS THE FIRST ONE TO INDICATE THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM. HOWEVER WHEN BUYING A NEW SPARE TIRE AND RIM FROM A LOCAL TIRE SHOP, I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM OF FORD EXPLORERS AND PICKUP TRUCKS.*AK
WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH CONSUMER NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM VENTS. ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF, AND VENTS CLOSED. VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY DEALER YET. *AK
TEH SPARE TIRE FELL OFF THE VEHICLE WHILE IT WAS PARKED. THE SUPPORT CABLE RUSTED THROUGH AT THE POINT WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE FITTING THAT SLIPS THROUGH THE SPARE TIRE PRIOR TO WINCHING IT UP TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I CONTACTED FORD BUT THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY SERIOUS HAD I BEEN DRIVING THE SUV.*AK
LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID DUE TO LIINE RUBBING AGAINST CHASSIS OF 1994 EXPLORER, LEFT REAR AREA, LINE REPAIRED AND FIXED SO NO RUBBING WOULD OCCUR. ALL FLUID WAS LOST DROVE HOME NO BRAKES, REPAIRED NEXT DAY.
I WAS TOLD BY A CERTIFIED FORD DEALER THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS BAD AND THEREFORE THE PUMP AND FUEL LINE WERE ALSO DESTROYED BY RUST AND CORROSION. FORD HAS RECENTLY SEVERED IT'S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MANUFACTURER BUT WILL NOT COMMENT WHY. FORD REFUSES TO ADDRESS OUR CONCERN, THOUGH ONE C/S REP DID STATE THAT THE FUEL TANK WENT BAD DUE TO THE MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE. IF THIS IS THE CASE, FORD NEEDS TO TELL CONSUMERS THAT THE PURCHASE OF USED VEHICLES MAY BE PUTTING THE CONSUMER AT RISK FOR SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY AFTER 135,000 MILES.
STRUTS THAT HOLD TRUNK OPEN BROKE, AND HATCH DOOR CAN STAY OPEN. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER WAS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING. *AK
WHILE TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY AND WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING VEHICLE WILL SHUT DOWN . DEALERSHIP IS AWARE OF PROBLEM.*AK
WHILE PARKED GEAR JUMPED FROM PARK TO DRIVE AT A VERY RAPID SPEED. HOWEVER, AN ACCIDENT DID OCCUR. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. *AK WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED CONSUMER REVVED ENGINE TO 3000 RPM, TRANSMISSION VIOLENTLY BANGED IN TO DRIVE, LURCHED FORWARD AND RAN INTO A ROCK WALL. *YD
WHILE SITTING IN DRIVEWAY IN IDLE CONSUMER REVVED UP THE ENGINE, AND IN DOING SO, VEHICLE WITH A LOUD BANG ENGAGED ITSELF INTO DRIVE AND STARTED MOVING BEFORE RUNNING INTO A FOREIGN OBJECT WHICH STOPPED VEHICLE. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER WAS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING.*AK *TS
TIRES WERE REPLACED LESS THAN 6 MONTHS AGO DURING MASS RECALL. I WAS DRIVING @ 55 MPH ON A CLEAR HIGHWAY WITH NO DEBIS. THE SIDEWALL BLEW SUDDENLY AND I NEARLY CRASHED INTO A CONCRETE RETAINING WALL. CONSUMER STATES THAT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON THE VEHICLE WILL INTERMITTENLY WORK. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. MR
WHILE DRIVING, VEHICLE STARTED LOSING POWER AND FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM OVERFLOW RADIATOR CONTAINER DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH ENGINE HEAD GASKETS. THE HEADS WERE CRACKED, YOU COULD SEE WHERE THE GASKET SEPARATED FROM THE HEAD. *JG *AK
HEATER BLOWER RESISTOR BLEWOUT, CAUSING VEHICLE TO CATCH ON FIRE, FORD EXAMINED VEHICLE, AND FOUND LEAVES AND HEATER PLUG RESISTOR TO BE THE CAUSE. *JG
I HAD THE SCARIEST THING HAPPEN TO ME LAST NIGHT . ON MY WAY HOME FROM MY IN-LAWS WITH MY TWO CHILDREN. MY 10 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER GOT OUT OF HER CAR SEAT. I HAVE A CENTURY MODEL 1165ONHS, MAN.062997, THAT WAS BOUGHT FOR MY 3 1/2 YEAR OLD SON AND WAS HANDED DOWN TO HER. THE SEAT IS IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER BUT SHE IS A BIT OF AN ACROBAT. AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD I LOOKED INTO MY REAR VIEW MIRROR AND SAW HER STANDING IN HER SEAT, FACING ME!!! I AM ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE I PUT HER IN HER SEAT BEFORE WE LEFT MY IN-LAWS A FEW MINUTES PRIOR TO HER ESCAPE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND TIGHTENED THE STRAP FROM THE BACK WITH THE BAR AND PUT HER BACK INTO HER CAR SEAT, KICKING AND SCREAMING MIND YOU. NOT A 1/2 MILE LATER, AS SHE WAS STILL SCREAMING, I NOTICED HER CRYING BECAME MUFFLED. IT WAS EVENING TIME SO I COULDN'T SEE HER IN THE MIRROR I INSTALLED ON THE SEAT IN FRONT OF HER. AGAIN, I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND WAS TERRIFIED BY WHAT I SAW! SHE HAD AGAIN TWISTED OUT OF HER SEAT AND WAS BEING STRANGLED BY THE WHITE CLASP THAT HOLDS THE 2 STRAPS TOGETHER. SHE HAD TWISTED HERSELF AROUND, THROWN HE LEGS OUT OF THE SEAT TO HER RIGHT AND WAS HANGING BY THE CLASP. FROM HER WAIST DOWN, SHE WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF THE SEAT, HANGING OVER THE SIDE AND STUCK. I HAD MADE SURE THE CLASP WAS HIGH UP ON HER CHEST TO PREVENT HER FROM GETTING OUT, WHICH HAD PREVENTED ENOUGH ROOM FOR HER HEAD TO COME OUT. THE STRAPS WERE ALSO VERY TIGHT ON HER. THEY PULLED HER SHOULDERS DOWN WHEN I STRAPPED HER BACK IN. I THOUGHT THAT WOULD KEEP HER IN. IT DID NOT! THE THOUGHT THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS COULD HAPPEN HAS NEVER CROSSED MY MIND. MY SON HAD NEVER ATTEMPTED ANYTHING LIKE THIS. IT SCARES ME TO THINK WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WASN'T ABLE TO PULL OVER AS FAST AS I DID. MAYBE IF ALL INFANT CAR SEATS WERE REQUIRED TO HAVE A 5 POINT HARNESS OR LAP BAR, THAT WOULD HELP. WE DID BUY HER A NEW CAR SEAT LAST NIGHT, EQUIPPED WITH A LAP BAR. PLEASE HELP! THIS IS VERY SERIOUS.*
LATE NOVEMBER, 2001, I NOTICED A GASOLINE SMELL. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL SENDER HAD CORRODED AWAY. MY RESEARCH SHOWS OTHER RECALLS OF FORD TRUCKS (AEROSTAR) FOR FUEL SENDERS MANUFACTURED IN THE SAME PERIOD (MY CAR MANUFACTURED APPROX. SEPT. 1993). I HAVE CONTACTED MANUFACTURER AND HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE OTHER THAN CUSTOMER SERVICE SAYING THAT IT WASN'T A DEFECTIVE PART.*AK
TEXAS "SALVAGE TRUCK" HOW DID IT GET "RESOLD" IN ARIZONA!. NO SAFETY DEFECT LISTED. *AK
WHILE DRIVING 55-60MPH ON WET PAVEMENT WHEEL LOCKED ,COULD NOT STRAIGHTEN VEHICLE. TOOK VEHICLE TO REPAIR SHOP, AND MECHANIC INDICATED THAT METAL BROKE OUT OF RADIUS ARM. PLEASE ADD VIN. *AK
SPARE TIRE HANGS FROM A WIRE ROPE. THE WIRE ROPE CORRODED AND FAILED, DROPPING THE THRE & WHEEL WHILE MOVING. REPORTED TO FORD AT 800 392 3673, BILL OPERATOR NUMBER 2072. WHILE ACKNOWLEDGING HAZARD, HE SAID THERE WAS NO PROGRAM, AND WOULD BE NO FOLLOW UP. *AK
COMPLETE SIDE OF OUTSIDE TIRE WALL SEPARATED AND BLEW OFF . NO SOUNDS OR WARNING PRIOR TO INCIDENT. TIRE HAD 16,000 MILES ON TREAD AND DID NOT SHOW ANY SIGN OF WEAR.*AK (TIRESIZE: 235R/75/15)
1994 FORD EXPLORER EXPERIENCED RAPID ACCELERATION AND LOST OF BRAKING ABILITY. *MR THE ACCELERATOR CABLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE SECOND TIME AND THE MECHANIC PLACED A WIRE TIE ON IT TO HOLD IT IN PLACE. *SCC *JB
CONSUMER NOTICED A FUEL LEAK. ALSO, SMELLED FUEL INSIDE VEHICLE. HE TOOK VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT SENDING UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO FUEL PIPE RUSTING THROUGH. *AK
DUE TO FAILURE OF THE LIFTGATE BRACKETS, WHICH ARE COVERED BY A RECALL, CAUSED METAL FATIGUE ON HINGES RESULTING ON THEM TEARING AWAY FROM BODY OF THE VEHICLE.IT IS MY OPINION FORD SHOULD MAKE REPAIRS TO MY VEHICLE BECAUSE THE RECALLED COMPONET CAUSED THE DAMAGE. *AK
TRANSMISSION OVERHEATED CAUSING MAJOR MALFUNCTIONING IN TRANSMISSION.. THIS IS SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED WITHIN A YEAR AND A HALF. TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN OFF ROAD TO MY KNOWLEDGE(BODY AND UNDERNEATH ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, I.E. NO RUST). AFTER TALKING TO A FEW REPAIR SHOPS AND DEALERSHIPS I WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS VERY COMMON WITH THE FORD EXPLORER. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED REGULARLY AND TAKEN PRIDE IN IT'S APPEARANCE. IT RUNS GREAT BUT THERE HAS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE MANUFACTURING OF THE TRANSMISSION, OR THIS PROBLEM WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURED TWICE. I STAND BY FORD'S BUT, THIS MAKES ME LEARY OF EVER BUYING ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT THAT THE COMPANY WILL NOT STAND BY. I HAD DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES ON THE FREEWAY DRIVING 65 TO70 MILES PER HOUR AND HAD GOTTEN OFF THE FREEWAY AND WAS TAKING A SIDE STREET DRIVING 50 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE TOTAL ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WENT DEAD. THE CAR SEEMED TO BE WARM-IT WAS A HOT DAY AND I HAD BEEN USING MY AIR CONDITIONING TO THE MAXIMUM. I TRIED RESTARTING THE CAR BUT IT WOULD NOT START. AFTER 45 MINUTES THE CAR STARTED UP AGAIN. NOTE! WE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR ON JULY 9, 1999 AT APPROXIMATELY 96000 MILES ON THE CAR. IF THIS HAD OCCURRED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY I COULD HAVE BEEN BADLY INJURED. I FEEL THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH A FAULTY IGNITION SYSTEM WHICH HAS DESIGN PROBLEMS.*AK
IGNITION TURNS OFF WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING ON I-95. ALSO OCCURS AT SLOW SPEEDS. POWER STEERING AND BRAKES STOP WORKING WITHOUT POWER, MAKING MANEUVERING DIFFICULT. AFTER 10 MINUTES, WILL RESTART. FORD CORP. OFFICE HAS NO RECORD OF PROBLEM, YET IS SETTLING 5 STATE LAWSUIT ACCORDING TO TODAYS NEWSPAPER.*AK
BRAKES ARE NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY, AND HAD TO REPLACE MASTER CYCLINDER. ALSO, THERE IS MANUFACTURER'S RECALL 96S35 CONCERNING PRIMARY ASSISTANCE BOOSTER FOR 1994 FORD, EXPLORER. HOWEVER, CONSUMER'S VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED DUE TO VIN. CONSUMER FEELS AS THOUGH FORD NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING IN NEAR FUTURE.*AK 4 WHEEL DRIVE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND WOULD NOT GO OFF, DEALER REPLACED SHIFT MOTOR AND SHIFT RELAY. DEALER REPLACED RADIUS ARM BUSHINGS AND CALIPER SLIDE PINS. *SLC

AT SPEEDS OF 55 TO 70 MPH THE VEHICLE SHAKES AND VIBRATES EXCESSIVELY. DEALER RECOMMENDS REPLACING THE MOTOR MOUNTS AND REAR AXLE-TO-FRAME LATERAL SHOCK ABSORBER.*AK
THE TRANSMISSION ON THE 1994 FORD EXPLORER APPEARS TO BE DEFECTIVE. THEY FAIL AFTER ONLY BETWEEN 75,000-125,000 MILES. *JB
SPARE TIRE WAS MISSING, AFTER ARRIVING HOME, CONSUMER NOTICED THAT CABLE HAD RUSTED. *AK *JG
LEFT FRONT BRAKE CALIPER LOCKED UP ON DISC WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I'V EXPERIENCED THIS WITH THIS BRAKE SYSTEM. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN 10/98 WITH ONLY 1825 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. AT THAT TIME, THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE CALIPER LOCKED UP ON THE DISC, BURNING OUT THE PADS, DESTROYING THE DISC AND CALIPER. THE CALIPERS SHOULD NOT BE LOCKING UP LIKE THIS! ON THE CURRENT FAILURE OF THE LEFT CALIPER, THE BRAKES HAD BEEN CHECKED JUST THAT WEEK, AND THE CALIPER SLIDE RAILS CHECKED AND LUBED, WHICH SHOULD HAVE PREVENTEED THE LOCKUP. THERE'S OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE SYSTEM (IT'S ANTI-LOCK) TO BE EXPERIENCING THESE FAILURES ON A CAREFULLY MAINTAINED, EXTREMELY LOW MILEAGE VEHICLE.*AK
WHILE DRIVING 65 KM THE RPMS WILL GO UP IN RED, AND NOT GO BACK DOWN UNTIL CONSUMER SLOWS DOWN TO ABOUT 30 KM. THEN, SHE CAN FEEL TRANSMISSION KICK IN, AND RPMS GO DOWN. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES . MECHANIC STATED TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REBUILT AND UPGRADED. CONSUMER CALLED FORD, AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ON EXPLORER'S TRANSMISSIONS WITH THIS PROBLEM. *AK
CABLE THAT HOLDS SPARE TIRE UP SNAPPED, AND CONSUMER'S SPARE TIRE BECAME DISENGAGED WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE. CONSUMER FEELS LUCKY THAT THERE WERE NO INJURIES. CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED DEALER. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFOMATION.*AK
DRIVER'S SEAT METAL IS FATIGUE AND TORE, CAUSING DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT TO WOBBLE AND SHAKE. CONSUMER FEELS THERE COULD BE GREAT BODILY HARM. *AK
THE CAR WAS PARKED AT THE CURB. I BACKED UP ABOUT TWO (2) FEET , PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND TRIED TO TURN THE WHEEL LEFT INTO THE STREET AND IT WOULD NOT TURN THE WHEELS. OWNERS MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS STATES THAT TIRE SHOULD BE ROTATED IN A CRISS CROSS PATTERN. BUT CAR DEALER AND FIRESTONE SAYS THEY SHOULD BE ROTATED FROM FRONT TO BACK. *AK
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A LEFT SIDE FRONTAL COLLISION AT APPROX 50 MPH. UPON IMPACT, BOTH AIR BAGS DIDNOT DEPLOY. DEALER / MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED, AND UNWILLING TO ASSIST IN THIS MATTER. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE US WITH ANY FURTHER DETAILS ON THIS PROBLEM. *AK

RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE 95I00700. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP. REPAIRS WERE MADE. NOTICED ONE SIDE INCOMPLETE. INFORMED SERVICE MANAGER, WHO REFUSED TO DO REPAIRS. PROBLEM STILL EXISTS AFTER 10 MONTHS. CONTACTED MANUFACTURER, AND WAS REFERRED TO DEALERSHIP. NOT WILLING TO GET INVOLVED, STATING THEIR REPAIR WAS ADEQUATE.*AK FIRESTONE TIRE EXPERIENCED WALL FAILURE, NOS IZE OR KIND OF TIRE IS GIVEN BY CONSUMER. AFTER RECALL 99534, THE GAP BETWEEN THE LIFTGATE AND THE MAIN BODY ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE IS EXCESSIVE, PRIOR TO THE REPAIR, THE GAP WAS ABOUT 1/8 INCHES AS IS THE PRESENT GAP AT THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, NOW THE LEFT HAND SIDE IS 3/8 INCH, WHEN THE LIFT GATE IS CLOSED WITH NORMAL FORCE THE BOTTOM LATCH AT THE LEFT HAND SIDE DOES NOT ENGAGE. *SLC

PE00 048; CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 80MPH ON HIGHWAY AND LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE, LANDING ON SHOULDER. NOTICED THAT THE REAR TIRE ON PASSENGER'S SIDE TREAD SEPARATED FROM VEHICLE. GOODYEAR TIRE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES.*AK
CRACKED HEAD GASKET CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL OUT WHILE DRIVING, CONSUMER FELT HER VEHILCE SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER SIMILAR RECALL BUT WAS DENIED, THE CONSUMER IS REQUESTING REIMBURSEMENT FOR DAMAGE TO VEHICLE CAUSED BY CRACKED HEAD GASKET. NLM

FORD CLAIMS THE RECALL WORK WAS DONE (PER THEIR COMPUTER RECORDS, WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER PREVIOUS OWNERSHIP IN 1996), ALTHOUGH A FORD (DEALER) MECHANIC REPORTS THAT THERE IS NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE OF THE WORK BEING DONE. I AM CONCLUDING THAT EITHER IT WAS NEVER FIXED, OR IT WAS NOT REPAIRED CORRECTLY. FORD (BOTH LOCAL DEALER AND CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE) REFUSES TO FIX THIS AT NO COST. *AK
WHILE DRIVING, RIGHT REAR FIRESTONE TIRE EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION, CONSUMER STATES HIS SEAT BELT GOT CAUGHT ON HIS CUFF, CAUSING GREAT PAIN TO HIS LEFT SHOULDER, CONSUMER REPLACED HIS TIRES AND HAS REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT, HOWEVER HAS BEEN DENIED SEVERAL TIMES, CONSUMER DID NOT GIVE ANY SPECIFIC TIRE INFORMATION. *SLC
THE HOOD LATCH WAS FAULTY DUE TO 1 INCH SPRING WHICH BECAME WEAK, THIS ALLOWED THE HOOD TO BLOW BACK AGAINST THE WINDSHIELD CAUSING LOSS OF VISIBILITY WHILE THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING. NLM
