TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1994 FORD F-150. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND TURNED OFF, IT CAUGHT FIRE AND WAS DESTROYED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS DISPATCHED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP BUT THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER RECALL 05V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 170,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1994 FORD F-150. WHEN THE CONTACT PROCEEDED TO ENTER THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS ON FIRE. HE WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE ON HIS OWN. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INSURANCE ADJUSTER, WHO DETERMINED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN A RECALL REGARDING THE CRUISE CONTROL, BUT THE REPAIR WAS NEVER PERFORMED. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
WHEN ACCELERATING TO MERGE ONTO THE FREEWAY, THE THROTTLE (PEDAL) SUDDENLY MOVED OF ITS OWN ACCORD TO A COMPLETELY FULL THROTTLE POSITION. THE PEDAL MOVED ON ITS OWN FROM BENEATH MY FOOT, JUST AS IT WOULD IF THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED. IT STAYED IN THIS STUCK POSITION WHILE MEANWHILE, TO KEEP THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL, I STOOD ON THE BRAKE TO AVOID ACCELERATING TO TOP SPEED. BY CONSTANT APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE I WAS ABLE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE SPEED AT AROUND 85 MPH, BUT NOT WITHOUT EXTREME EFFORT. MEANWHILE I TRIED PUSHING ALL OF THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCHES, WITH NO EFFECT. I ALSO TRIED PUMPING THE BRAKE IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET THE CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH TO ACTIVATE, BUT IT DIDN'T HELP. I ALSO TRIED SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL BUT THE ENGINE WAS OBVIOUSLY GOING TO REDLINE SO I PUT IT BACK IN DRIVE. I CONTINUED THIS WAY FOR SEVERAL MILES. TRAFFIC WAS LUCKILY LIGHT ENOUGH THAT I WAS ABLE TO AVOID OTHER VEHICLES. I WAS AT THE POINT OF HAVING TO PULL OVER AND SWITCH THE IGNITION OFF WHEN THERE WAS A LOUD "POPPING" SOUND FROM UNDER THE DASH (STRAIGHT IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER). WHEN THE "POP" OCCURRED THE THROTTLE RELEASED AND I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL IT NORMALLY. BY THEN MY BRAKES WERE SMOKING AND ALMOST ON-FIRE. THIS OCCURRED TWICE. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON MARCH 17, 2009 AND THE SECOND WAS ON MARCH 27. THE FIRST TIME IT CLEARED ITSELF AFTER A COUPLE OF MILES. THE SECOND TIME WAS MUCH WORSE AND LASTED FOR AT LEAST FIVE OR SIX MILES. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALER (LA POINT FORD, SALT LAKE CITY) AFTER IT OCCURRED ON THE 27TH. THE MECHANIC COULD FIND NO PROBLEM WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL TESTS THAT HE RAN. THEY SUGGESTED DISCONNECTING THE CRUISE CONTROL TO SEE IF THE PROBLEM WOULD STILL OCCUR, JUST IN CASE IT WAS THE ENGINE COMPUTER RATHER THAN THE CRUISE CONTROL. HOPEFULLY I WILL SURVIVE THE TEST. LUCKILY BOTH TIMES IT HAPPENED I WASN'T NEAR ANOTHER CAR. HAD I BEEN, I WOULD HAVE RUN INTO THEM BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO REACT. IF THIS OCCURS TO OTHERS SOMEONE WILL BE KILLED. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1994 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A FORD RECALL NOTICE FOR THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL: CRUISE CONTROL IN AUGUST OF 2007. HE IMMEDIATELY SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE AND THEY WOULD DISCONNECT THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. THE SWITCH WAS NOT DISCONNECTED BECAUSE NO ONE INFORMED HIM OF WHEN THE PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE. THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE. THE RECALL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN.

AN OLD-FASHIONED MASTER CYLINDER WAS PLACED ON HIS VEHICLE, WHICH WAS NOT EQUIPPED WITH CRUISE CONTROL. SINCE THAT TIME, HE HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY RECEIVING RECALL NOTICES FROM FORD REGARDING NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). HE CALLED FORD AND WAS INFORMED THAT BECAUSE THE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED EIGHT YEARS AGO, THEY WOULD ONLY MAKE THE SAFETY RECALL REPAIR IF HE REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER AND RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO ITS ORIGINAL STATE. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 250,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

TL* - THE CONTACT HAS A 1994 FORD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ON 12-30-06 THE CONTACT HAD DRIVEN THE TRUCK ABOUT A MILE UNDER DRY CONDITIONS WHEN SHE PARKED THE VEHICLE IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER (AERO FORD) THEY TOWED THE TRUCK, AND FOUND THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY RECALL ( 05V388000) VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. MY 1994 FORD F-150 WITH ONLY 58,000 MILES WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR WHEN IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE TRUCK WAS AN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION INSIDE AND OUT EXCEPT FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL, WHICH WAS NOT WORKING. I WAS LOOKING AT THE DEALER WEB SITE AND FOUND OUT MY VEHICLE HAD A RECALL. HOWEVER FORD NEVER SENT MY A RECALL NOTICE. *JB
PAPERBOY KNOCKED ON DOOR AT 5AM SAYING TRUCK WAS ON FIRE. FIRE WAS SHOOTING OUT FROM UNDER HOOD. TRUCK HAD BEEN SITTING FOR 14 HRS WITHOUT BEING DRIVEN. FIRE ENGULFED WHOLE TRUCK BEFORE FIRE DEPT WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH IT. THERE HAD BEEN NO PRIOR PROBLEMS.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE CAUSING MINOR BURN INJURIES TO THE CONTACT. THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECT CITED IN A RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS STRANDED 75 MILES AWAY FROM THE CONTACT'S HOME AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVABLE. THE DEALER WAS ALERTED WHO CONFIRMED THERE WAS RECALL ON THE VEHICLE BUT STATED THAT THE RECALL ONLY APPLIED TO REPAIRS OR REPLACEMENT OF THE SPEED CONTROL. THE RECALL WOULD NOT APPLY TO OTHER PARTS THAT WERE DESTROYED BY THE FIRE WHICH WERE THE HARNESS WIRING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND MASTER CYLINDER. THE DEALERS ALSO DETERMINED THAT IT WOULD TAKE 7-10 DAYS TO RECEIVE A REPLY FROM THE CLAIMS DEPARTMENT OF THE MANUFACTURER TO BEGIN THE REPAIRS.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE PARKED OUTSIDE THE RESIDENCE. THE DAMAGE FROM THE FIRE WAS CONFINED TO THE ENTIRE FRONT END. THE POLICE AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WERE CONTACTED, AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE STARTED NEXT TO THE BATTERY ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. THE VEHICLE ALONG WITH PERSONAL ITEMS INSIDE THE TRUCK WERE DESTROYED. THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN ALERTED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY; CONSUMER AFFAIRS DATED 5-1-06 STATING BECAUSE OF THE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, THEY WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF A DEFECT WAS PRESENT.

THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT HAVE THE REPLACEMENT PART AND ONLY DISCONNECTED THE SPEED CONTROL. AFTER THREE MONTHS THE REPLACEMENT PART ARRIVED. THE PART WAS INSTALLED BUT FAILED AFTER DRIVING 55 MPH MILES ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP.
