WHILE TRAVELING ON I-75 OCTOBER 12, 2000, I WAS GOING AT A SPEED OF 75 MILES PER HOUR, WHEN I HEARD A NOISE AND FELT MY FORD TRUCK PULL. I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO SLOW THE VEHICLE WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN A MUCH LOUDER NOISE AND MORE VIOLENT SHAKING GRIPPED THE VEHICLE. I WRESTLED WITH THE STEERING WHEEL OF THE TRUCK AS IT LURCHED IN ERRATIC MOVEMENTS. I LUCKILY WAS ABLE TO MOVE IT TO THE FAR LANE ONTO A SHOULDER. HOW, I AM NOT SURE SINCE TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY AND A SEMI WAS CLOSING IN ON THE RIGHT SIDE. WHEN I EXITED THE TRUCK AND LOOKED AT THE FRONT, I SAW A TIRE ALMOST COMPLETELY DISINTEGRATED WITH THE OUTSIDE RUBBER STRIP SEPARATED FROM THE MANGLED INNER PORTIONS OF THE TIRE. CONSUMER WAS AT A STOP LIGHT & THERE WAS A THUMP. MAKING A LEFT TURN VEHICLE WAS SWAYING LEFT & RIGHT. CONSUMER GOT OUT AND FOUND THAT TRAILER HAD HIT THE GROUND AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE ON PASSENGR'S SIDE. REAR HAD BOTH ARMS CLOSEST TO THE BUMPER COMPLETELY BROKEN OFF. TRAVIS WAS HIT FROM THE REAR AND KNOCKED INTO ANOTHER TRUCK TOTALING OUT ALL THREE TRUCKS IN THE WRECK, OUR AIR BAGS DIDN'T GO OFF THIS CAUSING TRAVIS TO HIT HIS HEAD,CUTTING IT REQUIRING STITCHES ON THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF HIS FOREHEAD,IF THE AIR BAG HAD OF WENT OFF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED,WE HAVE REPLACED THIS VECHICLE WITH ANOTHER 97 FORD,MAKING US HAVE A TOTAL OF 2 1997 FORD ARE THE AIR BAGS SAFE IN THESE TRUCKS,NEXT TIME IT COULD BE FATAL NOT JUST SCARED FOR LIFE. *AK

I HAD AN ELECTRICAL SHORT UNDER THE DASH CAUSED BY MOISTER IN THE FUSE BOX , WHICH WAS CAUSED BY WATER LEAKING AROUND THE WINDSHIELD. I WAS NOT TO CONCERNED UNTIL I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS 13 PAGES OF SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT MOISTURE GET INTO THE FUSE BOX. IT DOES THING AS WIPER NOT WORKING WHILE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE BUT WILL WORK ANY OTHER TIME. RADIO NOT TURNING OFF, BLOWER MOTOR NOT SHUTTING OFF. TRYING TO ENGAGE THE STARTER WHILE THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING.
REPORTED PROBLEM TO FIRESTONE DEALER IN AUSTIN, MN. THEY INDICATED THE TIRE WAS NOT IN THE RECALL AND THEY WOULD DO NOTHING FOR US, EXCEPT PRICE NEW TIRES. THE TIRE BLEW UP WHILE ONE OF OUR EMPLOYEES WAS DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE. WE ARE EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED. WE HAD TO ASK SPECIFICALLY TO GET THE TIRE BACK FROM THE FIRESTONE DEALER. WE FEEL OTHER FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR THE RECALL. REAR SLIDING WINDOW LEAKING AND DRIVER'S DOOR WAS CHIPPING PAINT DUE TO WEAK METAL USED. DEALER / MANUFACTURER NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT NOTHING COULD BE DONE. *AK
ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK WHEN CONSUMER WENT TO PASS A VEHICLE , CAUSING VEHICLE SPEED TO ACCELERATE UP TO 90 MPH. ONLY WAY TO STOP ACCELERATION WAS BY CONSUMER BENDING DOWN AND PULLING UP ON THE ACCELERATOR FROM FLOOR. DEALER CLAIMED PARTS WAS ON BACK ORDER.*AK
PURCHASED VEHICLE NEW IN APRIL 1997. FROM THE THIRD WEEK OF OWNING VEHICLE, ENGINE SHAKES, SPUTTERS, AND STALLS WHEN DRIVING. FORD HAS ATTEMPTED 13 TIMES TO FIX PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED THE ENGINE LONG BLOCK ON 7/24/00. ENGINE EXHIBITED THE SAME PROBLEM LESS THEN 1000 MILES LATER. FORD ONCE AGAIN REPLACED ONLY (BAD PARTS) IN LONG BLOCK THIS TIME. TILL THIS DATE ENGINE STILL EXHIBITS SAME PROBLEM. FORD'S POSITION IS THEIR REPRESENTATIVES MADE THE DECISION MY VEHICLE IS FINE, SO I'M STUCK WITH IT. TODAY, OCT 22, I HAVE ANOTHER APPOITMENT BECAUSE OF A LOUD RATTLE AND ENGINE PROBLEMS. IF REQUESTED, I CAN SUBMIT ALL INVOICES.*AK
THE EMERGENCY / PARKING BRAKE CABLE HAS BROKEN FOR THE SECOND TIME (PREVIOUS BREAK REPORTED TO NHTSA IN 1997 / 1998) BREAK WAS APROX 7" FROM PEDAL END OF CABLE (SAME PLACE AS BEFORE). REPLACEMENT PART # F65Z-2853BA $32.78. SUSPECT CABLE IS NOT THE PROBLEM BUT THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY COULD BE DESIGNED / MANUFACTURED INCORRECTLY CAUSING CABLE TO BE PINCHED / CHAFFED. I WAS JUST LUCKY THAT THE CABLE SNAPPED WHEN I WAS ON THE FLAT AND NOT IN MY INCLINED DRIVEWAY! STILL HAVE CABLE IF YOU WISH TO INSPECT IT, WILL GLADLY SEND IT TO YOUR ENGINEERS JUST GIVE ME AN ADDRESS.

A LOUD NOISE COMES FROM THE PITMAN EVERYTIME THE WHEEL IS TURN. ALSO, THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT STICKS AND STAYS ON LONGER AND LONGER EACH TIME.
FOUND L/F BRAKE ROTOR W/ LARGE CRACK IN IT EXTENDING FROM THE CENTER OF THE HUB TO THE RIM. R/F WAS PREVIOUSLY FOUND CRACKED 10,000 MILES AGO. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE ROTOR FELL APART WHILE TRAVELING DOWN THE INTERSTATE?
FOUND NAIL ENTERED TIRE , TURNED SIDEWAYS AND LODGED IN A "POCKET" UNDER TREAD. I WAS ABLE TO DISLODGE THE NAIL EASILY WITHOUT TOOLS. LOOKS, TO ME, LIKE START OF TREAD SEPARATION. THIS TIRE FOUND ON CONSUMER ADVISORY FOR ANOTHER SIZE.( DOT NUMBER: W2081PT466 TIRE SIZE: P235/70R16 )

MUTIFUNCTION SWITCH CUT HEADLAMPS OFF WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT AT APPOXIMATELY 45 MPH. NO PRIOR WARNING, NO FLICKERING JUST INSTANTANIOUS DARKNESS. SIDE MARKER LIGHTS AND TAILLIGHT S CONTINUED TO OPERATE. WAS IN A WELL LIGHT AREA OR THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS IF AT HIGHER SPEED ON AN UNLIGHTED ROAD. THE SQUEAL ON THE PITMAN ARM IS A NUISANCE. NOTE WHEN I TOOK TO DEALERSHIP TO BE REPAIRED, DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT DENIED ANY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM E WITH EITHER COMPONENT - WHAT A JOKE I NOW FIND BOTH ITEMS APPEAR ON YOUR WEBSITE. THERE SHOULD BE SOME ACCOUNTABILITY OR PENALTY FOR THE DEALER FOR NOT BEING HONEST ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WITH THESE COMPONENTS.*AK
I HAVE CRACKS IN MY DOORS, BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE. THEY ARE ABOUT A 1/4 INCH ABOVE THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDOW OPENING, AND THEY ARE ALMOST A HALF AN INCH LONG, AND THEY ARE CRACKED ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE DOORS. I WAS ADVISED TO REPORT THIS TO THE NTSA, BUT AS FAR AS I CAN TELL IT IS NOT A LIFE-THREATENING ISSUE. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU HAD ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THESE CRACKS, BECAUSE IT IS A PRETTY COMMON PROBLEM AMONG F150S, ALMOST 70% SINCE 1997 HAVE THEM, AND WE WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY WAY THAT WE CAN GET THESE FIXED IF WE HAVE NO WARRANTY LEFT OR IF WE BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED. TIRE BECAME NOISY AND BEGAN TO VIBRATE, INSPECTED TIRES AND FOUND A 6" STRIP TOTALLY SEPARATED WITH MUCH LARGER SEPARATION UNDER THE TREAD. REMOVED TIRE AND TOOK TO FIRESTONE, THEY INDICATED THIS WAS AN "ORDINARY" SEPARATION AND SUBJECT ONLY TO THEIR STANDARD PRORATED WARRANTY. I DECLINED THIER OFFER AND WILL LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR TIRES. TAKEN TO FIRESTONE FOR INSPECTION, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT ALL TIRES WERE SHOWING TREAD SEPARATION ON A 1997, FORD F150, ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT, P235/70R16, DOT# W2081PT237. ALSO, INFORMED CONSUMER THAT TIRES WERE NOT COVERED UNDER RECALL, AND ONLY COULD PROVIDE A PRORATE CHARGES FOR REPLACEMENT. *AK

I TRIED TO SUBMIT THIS BUT GOT A MESSAGE THAT WEG SITE WAS UNAVAILABLE. BUT ON RETRYING GOT A MESSAGE ALREADY SUBMITTED, BUT OBVIOUSLY NOT SO. THE TIRES ARE NOT ON RECALL. I INSPECTED THEM ALL ANYWAY. THE LEFT FRONT HAD WIRE BELT EDGES STICKING THROUGH THE CASING. I HAD ABOUT 20 PRICKS IN MY HAND FROM FEELING. I COULD PUT MY HAD UNDER THE TREAD AND PULL IT AWAY FROM THE CASING. I REPLACED ALL 4. I CALLED, FIRESTONE, FIRESTONE-BRIDGESONE HEADQUARTERS, FORD, THE FORD DEALER, TWO FIRESTONE DEALERS AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED SATISFACTION. ONE DEALER SAID [ON THE PHONE] THAT THE FAULT WAS FORD'S BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T TELL THEIR CUSTOMERS TO ALIGN THE WHEELS OFTEN ENOUGH. THE OTHER DEALER INSPECTED THE TIRE AND SAID THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO ALIGNMENT. I ASKED HOW MUCH WOULD CAUSE THE PROBLEM AND HE REPLIED 1/4". I SHOWED HIM THE ALIGNMENT DATA AT 0.05" OUT AND HE SAID THAT THE OTHER FRONT, ALTHOUGH WITHIN SPEC WAS AT THE HIGH END. *AK( DOT NUMBER: W2081PT197 TIRE SIZE: P235/70R16 ) *TR
TIRES IN THIS FAILURE ARE NOT ON THE RECALL LIST BUT ARE FIRESTONE. I WAS CONCERNED SO I INSPECTED THE TIRES. MY VISUAL INSPECTION OF ALL 4 TIRES INDICATED THAT THE LEFT FRONT TIRE HAD WIRE BELT EDGES STICKING THROUGH THE CASING. [I PUT ABOUT 20 PRICKS IN MY HAND FEELING THE INSIDE EDGE] I COULD L PUT MY HAND UNDER THE TREAD AND PULL THE IT AWAY FROM THE TIRE. I REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES BECAUSE OF THE SIMILARITY TO TIRES ON RECALL. AFTER MANY CALLS TO FIRESTONE, CALLS TO FIRESTONE/BRIDGESTONE HEADQUARTERS, VISITS TO DEALERS, CALLS TO FORD, I HAVE RECEIVED NO SATISFACTION OR OFFERS TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE FAILURE. ONE FIRESTONE DEALER SAID IT WAS BECAUSE FORD FAILED TO INSTRUCT CUSTOMERS ON PROPER ALIGNMENT INTERVALS. ANOTHER SAID IT WAS AN ALIGNMENT PROBLEM. WHEN I ASKED HOW MUCH COULD CAUSE THE PROBLEM HE SAID .25 INCHES. I SHOWED HIM THE ALIGNMENT I HAD DONE ON REPLACEMENT WHICH WAS ONLY OUT 0.05 INCHES. THIS TIRE IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. IT FAILED LIKE THE RECALLS IN THAT THE TREAD SEPERATED FROM THE CAR CASING. YOU COULD PUT YOUR HAND UNDER THE TREAD AND PULL IT AWAY FROM THE CASING. THERE IS A CRACK IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR RUNNING APPROX 1" IN LENGTH FROM THE WINDOW EDGING.CONTACTED DEALER WHO ADMITTED THAT FORD WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT WAS UNWILLING TO REPLACE THE DOOR UNDER WARRANTY WHICH IS ACTIVE UNTIL 05/2001. *AK

I HAD JUST MERGED ONTO 287 BUSINESS NORTH, WHEN I HEARD THE TIRE RIP AND A SUBSEQUENT BLOW OUT. I MEASURE THE TIRE PRESSURE OF THE OTHER 3 TIRES AND THE PRESSURE READ GOOD. THE TIRE DEPTH WAS JUST OVER 4MM, BUT THE STORE MANAGER WHO PUT NEW TIRES ON MY VEHICLE SAID THAT THE TIRE WEAR WAS EVENLY DISTRIBUTED.
