My 2017 F150 5.0. The transmission shift sensor is intermittent. changing gears while driving at low speeds. The indication panel flashes like a Christmas tree.It locked up the brakes twice. Why isn't there a recall for it. The truck only has 73000. Miles.
*What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? -The vehicle downshifts suddenly and hard-shifts down on its own. It is worriesome as it randomly happens and oftentimes at high speeds. Yes it is available for immediate inspection. *How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? -On more than one occasion the vehicle has suddenly downshifted causing a hard noticeable jerk at random speeds. I am worried that at higher speeds it can lockup and cause a serious accident with my kids in the car. *Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? -I have taken it to Ford on several occasions in the past but said they didn't notice anything, but I recently took it again and explained the downshift and hard-shift again and now they told me it needs a full transmission replacement that would cost close to $8000 dollars. *Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? -The vehicle has been taken to Ford on multiple occasions but they did not find any issues at first. I took it again as it has happened more often and now they tell me it requires a full transmission replacement. *Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? -The issue first appeared last year, I took it and told them that it had a suttle jerk and asked them to inspect and if there were any recalls. No warning lights. *I am seriously concerned for my safety, it is my only good vehicle and worried it can cause an accident with my kids in the vehicle.
Repeated Transmission failures. Abrupt shifting that has been repaired numerous times only to return.
2 years ago i replaced my valve body in my 6r80 transmission due to constant down shifts to first gear at 45 miles an hour and rear wheel lock up with no codes shown. Replacing that part fixed my issue up until today, 2 April 2026, as i was driving to work today and the same thing happened again. Approximately 45 MPH my transmission downshifted to first gear, violently rev'd my engine to 6500 RPMS and locked my rear wheels briefly.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 55-60 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted into low gear. The vehicle lost motive power, the brakes locked up, and the transmission failed to shift out of gear. The transmission shifted to neutral and was shifting roughly and erratically. The driver shifted to Manual Mode and was able to continue driving in LIMP Mode. There was smoke coming from the vehicle. No warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Action Number: EA26001 (Power Train). The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who confirmed that there was no warranty coverage for the failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed the warranty status, opened a case, but declined further assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.
I started my truck this morning and turned on the heat and defrost. Came inside to gather my things for work and when I returned back there was a strong burning smell both inside and outside. I placed my work items in the back seat, closed the door. I heard something falling and found the back windshiled windshield had exploded.
Transmission will jump out of gear. Transmission will shift from 1st to 5th skipping all other gears. Transmission will stay in a high gear even when I’m stopped. transmission will get confused on what gear to be in and jump all around. sometimes the transmission will get stuck in limp mode in fifth gear and I will not be able to move until a loud bang when it shifts back into first. These problems will occur every few weeks and has been going on for more then a year. Sometimes going a month or two without any issues.
Sudden and harsh downshifts happening at speeds above 40mph in normal drivign conditions. The vehicle now shudders while crusing and clunks into and out of gears. The 6R80 transmission now feels like it is slipping when giving the vehicle gas from a standstill.
Vista Roof not operating as intended
I was on the freeway in eastern Colorado going 75mph which is the speed limit. Luckily nobody was behind me. My truck went from 6th gear to 1st out of nowhere and I didn't know what to do, very fast deceleration and I almost lost control. I was able to manually shift with the buttons on the gear shifter back up to 6th gear. Recently on the freeway it's been acting awkward and not shifting out of 4th gear.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 75 MPH on the highway, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted from 5th gear to 1st gear, and the rear wheels locked, and the vehicle slid. The vehicle then went into LIMP Mode but was still drivable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,000.
I got a code P0722-00 it says something about a sensor and a molded lead frame in the transmission this is affecting how the truck shifts gears and the amount of gas it consumes and in some cases it says that it can go from speed 6 to 1 currently not using it until its fix but I am reporting it just incase a recall were to happen later on
I've had the transmission replaced under fordprotect warranty and subsequently another torque converter and subsequent to that, a new program installed to repair low RPM Shudder. Under mild acceleration at interstate speeds (65 TO 75 mph) it now hunts for gears with random upshifts and downshifts while failing to maintain or increase speed which constitutes a safety hazard.
Sudden downshift at highway speeds.

Please help
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds, the gear shift indicator failed to display on the instrument panel. The transmission unexpectedly downshifted from 4th gear to 1st gear. A maintenance warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a transmission range sensor circuit (TRS) failure. The vehicle was repaired with a new lead frame. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 107,179.
An unknown coolant leak with my 2017 2.7 engine causing sufficient damage due to a manufacturer error and needing a new engine. I had several people tell me this is a common issue with 2.7 engines.
Automatic 6 speed transmission has down shifted to 1st gear 3 times this week while traveling 30 to 40mph locking the rear wheels and red lining the motor in traffic.
I slowed down to make a turn, when I accelerated after completing the turn the transmission shifted from 1st gear to 5th gear, skipping 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gear. This caused the truck to stall. I shifted the transmission to neutral and back to drive to try to get it moving again. It moved a little and stalled again. I shifted to park and back to drive, the truck moved a little and stalled again. I shifted the transmission to park and shut off the ignition. I restarted the engine and shifted to drive and the truck started moving, shifting perfectly as if nothing is wrong.
6R80- Unexpected downshifting at highway speeds without driver input causing the vehicle to slow down. Harsh/rough when shifting and sounds like I'm driving on the rudders on the side of the highway. No warning lamps or messages. Occasionally downshifts hard when I'm slowing down and then potentially locking up my rear wheels.
6r80 lead frame failure causing erratic shifting and hard slamming and getting stuck in one gear on the interstate
Backup camera will just show a blue screen for a day or two, then it will work for awhile, and then it will go back to the blue screen. I’ve also had the whole system go out, including the radio, and after I turn the truck off for awhile and turn it back on, then the system starts working again.
While driving my 2017 Ford F-150 equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission, the vehicle began experiencing progressive slipping and delayed shifting between multiple gears, including failure to upshift beyond higher gears during normal driving. The transmission would flare between shifts and hesitate before engaging. During one drive, the vehicle would not shift properly and displayed a wrench warning message instructing the driver to see the owner’s manual. The transmission appeared to enter a reduced performance or limp mode. The issue has worsened over time despite a recent transmission fluid service and computer relearn/flash performed by a service center at a cost of approximately $1,100. No overheating occurred, but slipping continued and spread to additional gears. Prior to purchasing the vehicle, abnormal shifting and clunking were noticed during the test drive and brought to the dealer’s attention. The behavior was described as normal operation for the 10-speed transmission. The transmission has since deteriorated into failure requiring replacement. This malfunction creates a safety risk due to unpredictable acceleration, delayed power delivery when merging or crossing traffic, and loss of normal shifting operation. Independent repair facilities have diagnosed the transmission as internally failing and recommended full replacement with estimated repair costs of approximately $8,000. Symptoms began gradually and progressed to active fault behavior with warning message activation.
The transmission control module in the 10R60 transmission is no longer communicating with the vehicle. This caused the vehicle to not be able to determine which gear it is in causing it to not start.
Out of no where I was stopped at a traffic light and just before the light turned green, a yellow wrench appeared on my dash for a moment and stated only "see manual". I cleared the dash screen and pressed ok, the traffic light turned green and when I applied my foot to the gas peddle the RPM's went up but the car did not move. I pressed just a little harder to give a bit more gas and the RPM's continued to increase until the car's transmission threw itself into second gear quite forcefully and the car moved. I had it inspected by my mechanic and when he scanned the car's trouble codes he discovered the following: P0722-00, U0155-00, U0401-82, U0452-82, B1081-07 All those codes are tied to the transmission's lead frame failure which is a well known issue. Ford has extended additional warranty coverage up to 2016 models with the same 6R80 transmissions but will not cover my 2017 which was manufactured in 2016 with the exact same transmission having the exact same problems.
While driving down the road all of a sudden vehicle slams then shifts down indicator lights for gear selection starts flashing. It has happened 4 times so far this week February 17, February 19 of 2026.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stopped at a stop light, the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the driver’s and passenger’s side rear wheels locked up. The contact stated that after several seconds, the vehicle started operating as intended. Neither an independent mechanic nor a dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 78,684.
Reporting an ongoing off intermittent malfunction of the 6speed transmission electrical/sensor components causing unexpected downshifting and upshifting without any driver input or warning. this occurs semi regularly and is very concerning for the safety of the driver, passengers, and those on the road. I’ve been made aware of this ongoing investigation regarding the transmission issue, and am filing a report as a result. No road accident has resulted yet from said issue, but there is growing concern for the safety conditions in said vehicle as it continues to be used.
Torque shudder , involuntary downshifts , gets stuck in 2nd ,
Wheels lock up and down shift at high rate of speed. Code on dash is a PO720.
While driving my truck roughly 60 mph, I experienced a sudden and uncommandded shift from 6th to 1st gear for roughly 3-5 seconds. When this occurred the engine RPMs jumped up to near Red Line and I experienced a rapid deceleration. I was driving on a dry road with new tires and did not experience any wheel lock up or skidding. However, this could have very easily posed an extreme safety hazard to both me and other drivers around me had I lost control of the vehicle which would have been highly likely in less optimal conditions. The problem has not been reproduced by a dealer or independent service center and the components have not been inspected. While the downshift was occurring there were some lights that flashed on the dashboard. I believe it may have been a check engine light, but my focus was on maintaining control of the vehicle so I did not have time to focus on the lights. Once the engine shifted back to normal there were no remaining lights or cautions. The symptoms of this incident very closely match those discussed in the ongoing Investigation EA26001.
I recently discovered a recall notification in my app regarding wiper corrosion, which has resulted in my wipers functioning very slowly regardless of the speed setting. This poses a significant safety concern, especially during rainy or snowy conditions in Michigan, as it substantially impairs visibility. After contacting Ford Motor Company and spending three hours on the phone, I was informed that this recall is applicable only in Canada. However, I am currently residing in the U.S. and experiencing related issues. Given the serious nature of this safety matter, I felt it necessary to bring this to your attention. Thank you for your consideration.
See attached document for complaint. To Whom It May Concern: This letter is submitted as a formal pre-packet notification to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It is not a cover letter and it is not the evidentiary submission itself. Its sole purpose is to formally notify NHTSA that a certified, multi-issue dispute packet has been prepared and is being distributed concurrently to multiple governing, regulatory, and internal oversight entities, and to coordinate assignment of a reviewing party for secure evidentiary transmission. Background and Context This matter concerns a 2017 Ford F-150, purchased and serviced through West Motor Company, Preston, Idaho, and financed through Ford Motor Credit Company LLC. Safety- and recall-related concerns affecting the vehicle have arisen and remain unresolved, directly impacting the condition and value of the collateral securing the associated Ford Credit retail installment loan. Safety / Recall Concerns and Dealer Handling The vehicle has exhibited safety-related powertrain and braking symptoms consistent with known recall or safety campaign issues. Despite written requests for a complete VIN-based recall inspection and completion of all applicable recall work, these matters were not fully resolved. Dealer handling and diversion away from identified safety concerns have impaired both vehicle safety and collateral value. Related Loan Servicing Impact Concurrently, a Ford Credit dispute has been initiated regarding loan servicing practices that materially impaired my ability to access, understand, reconcile, and resolve the account. These practices include customer-portal lockouts during delinquency, forced fee-based payment channels, inconsistent fee assessments, and non-transparent interest application. The combination of unresolved safety issues and servicing barriers undermines any reasonable path to account stabilization. Purpose of This Pre-Packet Notification This correspondence serves to formally notify NHTSA that a multi-issue certified
10 speed transmission hard shifting, sudden power surges, during shifting it’s getting stuck in gear. Sudden shifting while driving. It’s come to my attention this is a known issue for my 2017 Ford F150 EcoBoost 3.5L V6, 10 speed automatic transmission. I need help with repairs. Was told to report this on this site.
Coming down an incline in a parking garage and had a hard down shift while lightly applying the brakes issue is following pre warning signs for safety issues under investigation
I live in Canada. While driving, my 2017 Ford F-150 with the 6R80 automatic transmission suddenly shut off without warning. The vehicle lost power while in motion, creating a dangerous situation. The incident was accompanied by multiple powertrain fault codes (5 P-codes). This appears to be related to sudden transmission faults and loss of gear position. No prior warning lights before shutdown.
During the last two years with my 2017 Ford F150 XLT 4X4 5.4L, I've replaced the brake pads 8 times. I've also replaced the rotors on all 4 wheels. Each time, with less than 30,000 miles between needing to replace the pads, the front pads have worn down the entire pad at an unreasonable rate. I do not brake hard, and I drive mostly on highways without much traffic, so having to replace the pads every other month is excessive. With new rotors, still the pads continue wearing down to plate quickly. I've also had to replace the calipers on each wheel more than once because the caliper pins seize and will break when trying to adjust the caliper. The brakes and all the components are a major safety hazard as I'm always worrying if the brakes will function properly any give time I need to slow down. Also, the transmission shifts roughly and even downshifts without cause on occasion. It startles me when I'm driving and suddenly the transmission decides it wants to shift with a violent jolt as though briskly stepping on the brakes. I've had the transmission fluid changed twice in the last 2 years, which did not have any effect on the issue. Prior to each flush, the transmission has also developed a significant leak, which I led to the decision to flush the fluid and replace the pan and gasket. However, after doing so, the transmission continues downshifting and leaking. Once again, these issues have a significant impact on how safe I feel while driving my truck. I love my truck, but I hope my complaint helps Ford fix these little big issues and can develop a fix for future models.
I seen there were some issues going around with the 6r80 and wanted to voice my concerns as I am having this issue as well. Intermittently ive been having issues where ill be driving, could be doing 65 down the highway. The wrench light pops up for a second and my truck slams down into 2nd or 3rd gear and goes into limp mode. This could happen at any given time without warning. This just happened to me on Monday, went and got a code reading, and have a code for the output shaft speed sensor. Although I was fine, it is certainly not okay the truck just decided to slam down into gear ultimately slowing down the vehicle tremendously fast while being in traffic. Could have caused an accident or worse.
Check engine light for code for P2007 for an intake manifold runner control valve failure resulting in loss of power. This is well known issue for this era of engines. The runner control valve rod breaks and can not be repaired. The entire intake manifold must be replaced at a cost over $2k.
Duval Ford in Jacksonville, Florida claims they will not have the part until April of this year which means my child and I are in danger until that time. I will seek a remedy at another dealership but I do not believe it is reasonable to have this part on backorder for 3+ months after a recall notice has been sent out.
10 speed transmission. Hard downshifting, skipping gears and producing the check engine light when it goes into 10th gear. Yes it is available for inspection. Yes, the problem was reproduced, has not been inspected by the manufacturer. it is a $9,000 fix. There were no warning lamps, messages etc, prior to failure.

While driving my 2017 F150 Lariat 4x4 5.0LV8 with 6speed transmission and 48,700 miles on the odometer at roughly 55mph this morning - the transmission suddenly downshifted to 2nd gear. The downshift was sudden enough to "bark" the rear tires. Thankfully, no one was near me, and I was able to maintain control of the vehicle and reach my destination safely.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. No warning light was illuminated. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local independent mechanic, where it remained awaiting a diagnostic test. The local dealer was not contacted. The power moon roof components are made from plastic, which over time have cracked from sun exposure. When the rail system cracked, it caused the sliding glass panel to become loose and rattle around while driving. It also allows water to enter the inside of the vehicle when it rains, causing damage to electrical components.
while driving at normal speeds in drive mode, the transmission suddenly downshifts to 1st or 2nd gear causing immediate deceleration.
