Data synced from NHTSA on May 4, 2026
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that upon a cold start of the vehicle, a large amount of white or a dark blue colored smoke was coming from the exhaust tip. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic test showed that a tube that feeds the oil to the turbo was defective. Upon investigation, the contact discovered TSB#19-2188, which he linked to the failure. The contact was given an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
My 2017 Ford F150 XLT 3.5 Ecoboost, 10 speed transmission, experienced catastrophic failure recently during a cross country trip from Arizona to South Dakota. Upon driving through Colorado the transmission began shifting very loudly and hard, with a jerking action. The transmission began to shift out've gear into neutral and the engine would increase rpms uncontrollably. Additionally, the truck would roll forward while in reverse and backward while in drive . The Truck would stall in the middle of intersections creating a very dangerous situation if oncoming traffic was approaching. The truck is dangerous to very dangerous to drive. We eventually got the truck to a dealer in Winner, South Dakota, where it is awaiting repair, scheduled for Sep't. 7th and 8th, 2022. All of the above occurred 8/10 and 8/11 of 2022.
The 5.0 Liter V-8 has defective intake manifold runner valves. This is a commonly known problem. This can cause the engine to quit running and lose power at any time. Ford has not had parts to repair for the past 2 or so years
Koons Ford, Woodbridge, VA could not rotate my tires due to swollen lug nuts that cost almost 400.00 to replace. They also informed me that if I were to have a flat tire I could not change it with the standard jack supplied by ford.
Door latch failure. Caused Driver Door Ajar warning to come on. Ford has issued recall for 2017 F150 model door latch but not for my VIN. May be other Ford F150 owners who didn't qualify for repairs because they didn't report the latch failure.
Rear windshield is leaking water into cab when it rains outside. The rear window is a power opening sliding window. Appears that windowstripping is not keeping water out around the sliding window.
The coolant line connector on my passenger side turbo is leaking. Causing my truck to overheat, forcing me to have to stop on side of road. I was informed that the water pump is leaking now also after a leak pressure test was preformed.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while reversing out of his driveway, the brake pedal went to the floorboard while depressed with brake fluid leaking onto the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that one of the brake lines was leaking and the other brake line showed a bulge. The dealer informed the contact that the brake lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.
The truck uses start stop technology. When you start to move after it has stopped the power steering does not start working initially making turns nearly impossible. Once the power steering builds pressure it returns to normal steering. This has occurred multiple times and seems to get worse as the truck ages.
Electric power steering assembly unexpectedly fails resulting in increased risk of injury or fatality from collision.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he became aware that the engine was violently shaking. Additionally, the Cam Phaser warning light was illuminated. The contact related the failure to the Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N03 (Cam Phaser Replacement). The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not included in the Customer Satisfaction Program. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
Incident x2: When coming to a stop after towing, once on the off ramp and the other at the gas station, the truck died/stopped running and would not stay started when trying to restart. Both times, the gas tank was at 50 miles to empty, and while in tow mode, towing a camper trailer. First time we had it towed to dealer, they found nothing wrong, no faulty codes. Second time, after fueling, started the truck and pressed the gas pedal for about 10-15 seconds to RPM at 4000 then let off gas and truck stayed running. Seems something in the gas line, tank or computer system. Does not happen when not towing.
The power steering abruptly stopped working while driving after two violent jerks to the left on the steering wheel. I was able to maintain my lane travel thankfully but it was a close call
The truth caught on fire driving down the road with passengers. It started on the passenger side and engulfed the truck. Insurance is investigating it.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the engine, and the vehicle shuddered. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the cam phaser was reprogramed under Ford Technical Service Bulletin Number: 21N-08B; however, the failure increased significantly. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the cam phaser was reset; however, the failure worsened. The dealer was notified and informed the contact that the cam phaser needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000
Vehicle: 2017 Ford F150 10 speed transmission 3.5L engine I was driving on Route 22 Westbound toward Pittsburgh, within Weirton city limits. The speed limit is 60MPH and I was traveling at 60MPH when truck (unprompted) switched gears to 1st gear. This caused the truck to lunge to nearly a complete stop on the highway with NO warning or brake lights. Only by God's grace did my family survive. I have contacted local Ford garage for service. I am afraid of the cost, as I believe the transmission shredded itself with this unprompted and dangerous shifting of gears. I am contacting you to report dangerous product. Please recall this death machine.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated there was water dripping from the grab handles and the dome light was filled with water. While driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was determined that water was leaking into the vehicle causing the computer to be destroyed. The mechanic informed the contact that the drain tubes were not properly connected. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer, who determined that the drain tube was clogged. While driving in the rain, the headliner was stained and getting wet. The vehicle was taken to a body shop, which determined that water was leaking into the vehicle between the sunroof and panel. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission started shifting abnormally. The contact stated that the vehicle was sputtering, vibrating, and shifting unexpectedly before returning to normal operation. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the PCM had previously been reprogrammed under TSB: 17E01 (Power Train) prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the PCM was re-flashed; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 63,000.
The first time I had a problem was after refueling the gear display went blank and as I started to drive it felt like the truck was not in 1st gear. I stopped turned off the truck and restarted and it was OK. I took it to my mechanic and he did a diagnostic which showed error codes p0706 p0707 p1702 and p1721. He couldn’t replicate the problem and thought is may have been a moisture problem since we had been getting heavy rains. The next time it happened it happened I was on I195 in Richmond driving at 55 mph and the gear indicator lights flickered and then went off and the truck downshifted and slowed suddenly. The indicator lights came back on quickly and everything was fine. I went back to the mechanic and he got the same error messages. It was not raining this day
During service for a recall (possible leaking master brake cylinder) the dealership advised me of leakage from an oil pan beneath the engine block. I assumed it was a matter of tightening the attachment bolts or possibly replacing the gasket. I was then informed that Ford glues the pan to the engine block and the oil was seeping through the glue. Further, the repair was to remove the existing pan and the residual glue from the block and replace with a new pan as the glue cannot be removed from the existing pan. The repair was estimated at $950. I have never heard of gluing on that critical part. Glue will eventually fail at which the pan will separate from the block and be ejected onto the street along with oil. As a design engineer I am amazed that glue is an acceptable assembly procedure.
Hard shift “clunk” transmission, most often when decelerating low speed, gears 3-5. Happening since I purchased the truck. Risk is the truck lurches or slows, leaving the driver unsure of next operational behavior. I have had the transmission oil and filter replaced, which did not resolve the issue. Took to Ford garage and unable to replicate but have heard of this issue from other 10-speed owners. My truck has not been inspected by a regulation body. Anyone like myself that would drive my truck in normal conditions would find this issue, while random it’s still present. I am concerned about my safety, my wife who drives and resale. I receive no warnings lights or any indication the issue is about to happen or just did. Very concerned.
Check engine light came on, took car to certified Ford dealer and found out the intake manifold gasket was cracked. A cracked intake manifold gasket results in poor engine functioning as well as negatively impacts accelerating, endangering both the occupants of the vehicle and those around. This part is on backorder with Ford for over 1400 customers, we are the 1400th so who knows how many in total are actually affected. Ford needs to be held responsible for this faulty part.
Lug nuts swollen and needs to be replaced
2017 Ford f150 super crew 5.0L V8 engine. Started rough idling at stops when in drive about 5 months ago. It started just completely dying while in idle but never threw a check engine light or any code. Ford dealer didn't have an appointment for weeks. We took it to three different licensed mechanics who could not recreate the issue. We just got the truck back after the 4th stay in the shop and the mechanic mentioned the VVT solenoids being bad. There was an issued recall for this exact same problem but not for the 5.0L on 2017 Ford F150. After some more digging, I see hundreds of this exact issue on the Ford forums.
I believe the APIM has failed and I'm only at 54000 miles. My Sync 3 is stuck on version 1.0 and CANNOT be updated to the current 3.4 system.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F150. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH the contact heard a grinding noising coming from the vehicle and no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the stated that the actuators needed to be replaced but the failure reoccurred and blew out the front ended of the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired several times for the same failure. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that a tech needed to diagnose the vehicle to be cover under warranty. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Second time this has happened to my truck. First time was in 2020, now it just happened AGAIN in May 2022. Rear window in Ford F150 suddenly popped and shattered for no reason because the defrost mechanism malfunctioned and over heated causing the rear window to expand and shatter. The shattered window was hot to the touch after shattering and there was an electrical fire smell in the cab of the truck. The first time Ford gave me a case number but blew me off and I had to pay out of pocket. This time I have a case number but it is still a hastle and I am getting the run around and am hoping Ford pays for the window in full this time as they did not follow up or give me a reimbursment last time this happened. Ford has a big problem on their hands and needs to remedy this before someone gets glass in their eyes driving down the freeway after the window pops and someone gets killed in an accident.
The ABS and Traction Control lights came on. Then out of no where the Power Steering just stopped working.
SWOLLEN LUG NUTS HAD TO BE REPLACED BEFORE THEY CAUSED A SAFETY ISSUE
Upon startup, the engine produces a loud “rattle” sound. It has consistently gotten worse. My local Ford dealer advised this is called a “phaser” for the camshafts and that they have failed. Ford has already issued a recall for this problem on trucks like mine, but for unknown reasons, my truck is NOT included. I have been advised that it is only a matter of time until there is a catastrophic engine failure. It has already been demonstrated that this part is defective, yet Ford refuses to address the problem in its entirety. I want Ford to honor their commitment and repair ALL affected trucks with these defective parts.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the dealer. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 91,300.
I brought my ford in to have tires rotated and they were unable to do because ford installed factory lug nuts are distorted. I brought my truck to a reputable tire shop and they told me it is a common problem on Ford F-150 from 2016 to present. I ordered replacement lug nuts to remedy the problem. I am saving the old lug nuts in case I have to take them to small claims.
Cam phasers cause intermittent excessive engine rattle upon acceleration. Problem not rectified by Ford recall. Rattle subsides by letting off gas pedal. Rapid declaration upon merging or being followed too close may lead to collision
The engine rattles on cold start. It has been diagnosed with a cam phasers failure issue. The truck has 74000 miles on it and has had regular maintenance. This is an ongoing known issue with Ford and this engine. How has Ford managed to get away with not having a recall for this?
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that upon a cold start of the vehicle, an abnormal rattling sound was coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer where a diagnostic test was performed, and the contact was informed that the VVT solenoids were defective. The contact was informed that the dealer was aware of the failure; however, there was no recall for the failure. The manufacturer was also made aware of the failure and provided the same information as the dealer. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
The engine formed a premature oil leak around the oil pan.
On two occasions, my 2017 F150 failed to restart after the auto stop/start shut the engine off. April 29, 2022, I stopped at a crosswalk to allow pedestrians to cross. My truck auto stop engaged and the engine stopped. I took my foot off the brake peddle to continue driving and my truck would not restart. Error messages flashed telling me to restart my truck. After attempting to restart my truck, nothing happened. All electronics continued to work (radio, air conditioning, power windows, etc.); however despite numerous attempts to restart the truck, it would not restart. Three pedestrians had to assist by pushing the truck off of the street to a parking lot as it was blocking the flow of traffic at a very busy intersection. As I sat waiting over two hours for a tow truck and periodically attempted to restart the truck, around 2 1/2 hours later the truck restarted and I drove it to the dealer. The dealer noted that the truck may have restarted since it "had time to reset". The dealer checked the truck but could not get it to replicate the problem but did note an error code of p164c. They made no attempt to offer any solutions or probable cause for the issue. We continued to drive the truck and had the auto stop/start issue repeat itself on May 8, 2022. The same scenario happened where the truck went into auto stop during a complete stop and failed to restart. Again, the truck was on an open roadway and impeding the flow of traffic. After numerous attempts to restart the truck, the truck continued to not start while all electronics continued to work. My husband was driving the truck this time and was able to use a tool to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to "reset" the truck. We then drove it to the same dealer who again reviewed the issue. They again concluded that since they could not replicate the problem, they could do nothing to fix the issue to avoid the problem in the future. This is a safety issue as it is extremely dangerous to stop in moving traffic.
Merging on interstate in heavy traffic when transmission would not shift out of 1st gear, traffic was heavy and I had several really close calls of getting run over. The dealership service manager (Supreme Ford Slidell,La.)said the transmission control module is bad. Repair cost will be $1,858.00 and no recalls on my vehicle. I’ve had Ford trucks all my adult life and I’m severely disappointed with this issue
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The vehicle was repaired under Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N08 Transmission Judder (Power Train) however, while driving at 35 MPH, the vehicle was jerking. Additionally, the gear shifter was stuck and there was an abnormal sound coming from the transmission. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed as a low-voltage failure and several unknown codes. The battery was replaced but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing belt tensioner and the cam phaser needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was unknown.
A service bulletin was posted about the oil pan leaking. We take our vehicle to Ford to have the service completed. It was brought to our attention that our oil pan was leaking. Ford had manufactured our vehicle with a plastic oil pan. What compounded the issue is the sensors did not alert the driver the engine oil was low. Ford cannot fix the problem with the faulty sensors. Ford solution to the leaking oil is replacing the oil pan. I feel this is a safety issue and Ford should repair my vehicle at there cost. I should not have to pay because Ford manufactured a vehicle with a very poor design. The leak is not the customers fault, it is a design flaw. If the vehicle operates low on oil it could lose power on the roadway and potentially cause an accident.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission unintendedly downshifted. No further information was available. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer, where it was diagnosed that there were metal shavings inside the transmission, causing the transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
My door get the water in it from time to time winter is the worst are door want latch or the pop open and I think its the cable like the other recall for the truck door latches its a headache and its very scary going around a curve and your door just opens up
On 4/1/22 while driving the rear glass exploded. There are many reports of this issue online. the vehicle was in a perfectly flat road with no holes and for no apparent reason it just exploded with a very loud bang. Thankfully this happened in a 40-mph zone, i can only imagine what would happen if this occurred at a high rate of speed. this vehicle is not used as a commercial vehicle, and we don't off road...
Truck downshifts periodically from 3rd to 2nd gear or from 4 to 3 of 4th to 2nd, for no reason, while keeping speed same on flat road. This causes tire squealing action in some cases and is unsafe. Also, at the same time, rear motion sensor system failure light comes on with an OK button. I select the button and then a wrench sign lights up indicating service requires. Sometimes also a check engine light comes on. Sometimes also the display showing what gear truck is in goes blank, or flutters through all gears. Sometimes a fan/generator comes on as well for no apparent reason. Sometimes the truck is goes in to no gear at all (neutral?) while I am moving. I pull over, restart the engine and the problems usually go away. This problem was reported to 2 Ford dealers (Cella and Bergey) on about 7/2022 and 8/2022. They gave me very different assessments of the problem, the most expensive being a new lead frame ($1,300) Problems originally started around 3/2022. Truck has about 35,000 miles on it.
I was making a turn on a curve in the roadway and truck lost power steering, causing me to fight the steering to keep it in my lane so I didn’t hit the car in the other lane around the curve. Call dealership and I was informed that that it would be over a week or so before they can even schedule me in for an appointment. Took to another shop and they said racks piñon. Be said it could be power steering control module’s
Cam phasers failed after being replaced one time under warranty. Then cam phasers failed again and ford will not cover coast. Mother makes knocking sound when it starts every time sound gets worse sometimes. Would like a call
What compontent: The lug nuts on my Truck swelled and are distorted so at risk of cracking. I couldn't get them off when i had a flat tire. It is available for inpsection. Safety: Safety put at risk 1. i couldn't change my flat, and couldn't tightne them correctly when i DID force it and 2. they are at risk of cracking, they ahve deterioated so wheels at risk of failing. Inependent verification: Costco changed my tires and noticed the issue, having to use other size sockets bc they were swelled so much. Warnings: No warnings or anything as purely mechanical/steel parts. You only know when you try to take ethe tires off, you think the jack is the wrong size. Its messed up how big they got. its ALL OF THEM. These SUCK. dealers so no recal so to be safe i guess I have to buy new ones and replace (Parts AND labor). Thank you
Rear window spontaneously burst no apparent reason everything for that started bulging and then big loud boom
Brakes slowly stop holding while at a stop for too long; such as at a red light or waiting for a train, and takes more force from driver to stop vehicle. After inspecting the braking system I found brake fluid leaking between the brake booster and master cylinder. With a little investigating I found Ford already recalled the same part number for other F150 trucks but mine was not in that group from the same model year. The current recall needs to be expanded to cover every truck with that part number. Due to this failure i was involved in a low speed TC in a parking lot when my brakes stopped holding.
The wheel lugs have seized and are unable to be removed with a tire wrench or impact wrench. This is a huge safety issue as the driver is unable to change a flat tire. The dealer informed me the lugs are made of aluminum and are subject to overheating and corrosion. I was informed the lugs are a two-piece set and have to be replaced and need to be cut off with a cutting torch. Ford is aware of the problem, however, dismisses a recall because they say the dealer service centers are using the wrong tools. The problem is the lugs are inferior metal and easily swell up and seize. Ford has used aluminum lugs since 2000. Since a driver can't change the tire this vehicle needs to be towed. Not being able to change the tire is a huge safety issue.
