Transmission jerks, and stalls. Drive train noise. Engine cuts out and has rough idle.
My truck has a 10 speed transmission and currently has 114,000 miles on the odometer. At about 90,000 miles It began shifting weird mainly into third gear just maybe a little slipping. That has drastically evolved to the engine racing between most shifts and causing hard jerking. At times it feels like it goes into neutral snd the engine revs, putting no power to the wheels. Most recently it has began to happen on the highway, even between seventh and 10th gear. It seems to lose forward momentum, but the income begins to race. This is becoming a major safety factor. At times, even making a turn the vehicle slows, but the engine speeds up, I went to my local Ford dealer. They said they’ve had no complaints of the 10 speed transmission on the Fords. I did some research and realize there are some recalls but not currently for my year.
Back up camera went black, then a very distorted picture came back on. I could not see to safely back up. Diagnosed by dealer found internal failure of back up camera.
Unintended tailgate opening which hit a trailer jack while under tow. $3,652.38 in damages to repair tailgate.
Ford has done a service bulletin on the cam phasers once before. The issues are still not fixed and all they say is it's normal. An engine rattling due to a part they installed is not considered normal. Wrong parts were used and the problem still persists. Ford needs to be made to recall 2015 to 2019 f150 trucks as well as any other series that have the issue. The service bulletin only gave people a certain amount of time to come in and have it fixed the first time which left a lot of people out of luck due to lack of communication to the owners of said vehicles.
The vehicle information screen in the center of the dash has failed. Some of the functions such as hands free cell phone connectivity, navigation, and radio functionality fails requiring manual intervention while driving. This results in distracted driving to correct the issues. The design and expectations are hands free operation of those functions via voice commands, controls on the steering wheel, or automatic functionality. At times the screen goes completely black and distracting noises come from the radio. Upon review of various forums, this appears to be a known long term problem with this important component on several Ford models. This functionality is right in your face and when it doesn’t work, I and most other drivers are focused on the fix and distracting from driving.
Engine randomly ratted and sometimes sounds like a loud sewing machine when first started up. Transmission skips gears and bangs into gears. Transmission has downshifted while driving causes fear and momentary loss of control. Transmission over heats while towing my camper. Truck is rated tow my camper. Engine misses while under load. I fear I will be broke down along side the road. Trade in value for a truck that operates properly has left me with an unsafe situation and a financial loss.

I was driving and the windshield wipers started wiping on their own. It was not raining and the windshield wiper setting was on off. This caused dirt and debris on the windshield to smear and I could not see where I was driving. For the next few days windshield wipers would randomly turn on on their own. It svwrely affected visibility. I read online that this was a common issue due to a malfunctioning windshield wiper switch. I replaced the switch and am hoping this doesn't happen again.

I bought this truck new on the dealers lot with an extended warranty that goes up to 75k miles. I brought the truck back to the dealer 3 separate occasions telling them of hard shifting, lagging in shifting and it missing shifts. All three times they “reflashed” the tranny. Every time within about 10k miles or even less it would get worse and worse. Now that I am at 82k miles I took it back for the same issue and they have finally determined an issue with “Slipped sleeve in CDF cylinder assembly”. The service tech told me they have been having other F150 model trucks coming in with the same issue. I spoke with Ford telling them that the dealer has record of me bringing the truck to them several times before my warranty ran out for the same issue, but they refuse to help me.
While driving on a straight roadway the right rear wheel hub broke off of the rear axle. This caused the truck to turn to the left out of control. The truck crossed over the center line while the entire wheel/tire separated from the wheel well of the truck. The wheel/tire traveled another 50 yards off the roadway into a field. The truck struck a hill on the other side of the road deploying the side airbags due to impact with a road sign. The wheel hub/axle was inspected by a mechanic and the insurance company. The wheel hub was determined to be a defective part by the mechanic and insurance company. The wheel hub had noticeable rust where the axle was connected to the wheel hub. The truck was totaled and removed by the insurance company.
Passenger front coil spring broke causing vehicle stability and suspension issues at driving speeds. Item is currently available for inspection. Problem has been confirmed as the part is broken in half. No warnings were presented prior to the failure. This appears to be recurring problem around 30k miles on this vehicle according to online forum post [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
This complaint is specifically about the transmission. The problem has been fixed, sort of, through Ford’s extended warranty. However, I think it’s still worthy of a complaint. My transmission was slipping out of and slamming into 4th and 8th gear. Turns out there is a TSB related to the issue. After multiple trips to the dealership, I finally received a completely rebuilt transmission. All new internals. Apparently my CDF drum and a pressure band had failed. Even with the fix I am not beginning to feel slipping and slamming into 4th gear again. Something tells me the slam into 4th will eventually leave me stranded at about 30mph somewhere.
The variable camshaft timing (VCT) solenoid becomes gummed up, causing the engine to lag. Specifically after driving on the interstate or highway and then sitting at a red light. The VCT does not perform properly and the engine idle drops, causing the truck to stall and die at the light. Online forums show this to be a common problem for the past couple generations of this Ford 5.0 L motor and always seems to occur between 80,000 and 100,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was a rattling and knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that engine cam phaser started but was not fired up and the contact was able to drive the vehicle. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
The vehicle is a 10 speed automatic, while driving the vehicle when it gets to about 4th gear, the transmission slips. This vehicle was purchased brand new and has only 64,000 miles on it. The transmission slips and at lower speeds when the transmission slips and hesitates before it shifts to another gear, this is a safety issue as while the vehicle semi stalls causes the potential to be rear ended by a trailing vehicle. This vehicle manufacturer should stop selling these transmissions that have serious issues with them. Surely when you purchase a brand new vehicle you don’t expect to have any problems with it at four years into ownership.
The trucks computer has a glitch the past few weeks where it will request permission repeatedly for OTA updates. Since this started, the rear view camera sometimes stays on after shifting from reverse to drive. It has remained on up to 30-40mph before the screen goes completely black. When the screen goes black, no functions work on the screen or audio/nav/camera controls except the radio on/off manual button. A hard reset fixes the issue temporarily by restarting the SYNC system, however it reoccurs frequently. This issue can be a safety concern because it is very distraction and the audio/phone controls cannot be changed or used during driving (i.e. handsfree or nav if you were in the middle of using them). It also puts into question whether or not the rear view camera system works or if it is properly interfacing with the rear parking sensors of the vehicle.
10 speed transmission loses power when passing other vehicles, shifts very hard between speeds, loud banging from transmission, very dangerous situations.
I bought this truck last April, and have not had an issue like this since I bought it. Today, when I got off the highway I made a stop on a light and proceeded on a road (45mph) about a quarter mile down I felt my truck slowing down and all of the sudden it stopped in the middle of the road. I gave it a little gas but it didn’t move much, at first I thought the transmission blew but I didn’t have any lights illuminated nor did I hear any noises. The road I was on was on an incline so I put the truck into neutral and the truck stood still, the brakes felt odd, stiffer than usual. To make a long story short I managed to pull into a parking lot, and started to inspect the vehicle. The rotors were very hot, so I thought maybe something is wrong with the brakes. I opened the hood and I started disconnecting vacuum hoses, one of the hoses closest to the brake booster was stuck and as I disconnected it I heard a loud hiss of air suction. I plugged it back in and started the truck, I put it in N and it started to roll again, and I regained normal brake pedal feeling. On the uploaded image, I circled where I disconnected the vacuum line.
The separator plate between the transmission and engine has corroded to the point of interference with the torque converter. Safety problems associated with this could cause sudden loss of power or control while driving. The dealership says this has been a common repair when being inspected for the rattling sound coming under the vehicle which was the only indicator. Repairs are on hold at this time but will be replaced soon.
When breaking, As the truck down shifts, it lunges forward against the breaks. like it is still trying to accelerate for a second.
Touch screen Sync3 version 22251 resets every time the truck is turned off and back on. Sometimes the screen is completely blank and sometimes unresponsive to touch. Controls for climate, radio, phone, and all other touch screen options become unavailable. Ford is aware and hasn’t made any updates in over 8 months.
Government entity with a fleet of Ford F150s experiencing faulty/defective transmissions
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 70-75 MPH and pulling a camper, the vehicle started sputtering and lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the head gasket had allowed a leak onto the alternator, causing the alternator to fail. The mechanic replaced the alternator. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where the head gasket was replaced. Additionally, the contact stated while the dealer was performing an oil change, the dealer informed the contact that the timing chain cover and the rear main seals were leaking. The dealer determined that the timing cover seals, the rear main seals, and other unknown parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

I've had extremely hard shifts since I got the vehicle at about 30k miles. I have a 2019 f150 xlt 302a with the 2.7l ecoboost in it. I have since found out that ford has defective CDF Drum parts and have updated the ones that are KNOWN to fail. I keep seeing people getting their transmission shudders and hard shifts fixed via a TSB or Recall, but my vehicle never shows any recalls. I dont understand. I've had the defective CDF Drum in my truck since I bought it. Why am I not able to get the recall fix. I've known for quite some time that it's going to fail at some point. Nobody at the Stealership had any help or info for me. So that's why I'm here. My transmission has had issues since the day I bought it. Why do I not qualify for the recall or TSB? I bought it used but it was gold certified so the warranty was until 100k miles. I now have approximately 122k miles on it now. Any help or info is greatly appreciated. Thank you and happy new year!! While driving vehicle displays "Service Advance Trac", "Pre collision assist not available", "hill assist not available" and the drive mode will not work. Brake lights are also on all the time as well. Dealership says the vehicles steering column needs to be replaced only 2 months after purchase. Dealer has diagnosed the issue but did not provide codes.
Transmission will not shift correctly between gears. When you first shift from start up it will make a hard clunk noise. Truck will start jumping and once it’s done the wrench light comes on. At one point I couldn’t get it to go into reverse and I had to shut the truck off and restart it to get it into reverse.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle failed to shift to the next gear. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the failure could not be duplicated. However, the transmission had been replaced three times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 94,817.
Between 3 and 4 gear on a 10 speed transmission. Accelerating on a cold start or going up a hill after start. Has a lunging gear shift and hard shift then after and catching the correct gear. Have taken the truck in multiple times to ford. All they do is just reset the transmission. I’ve had issues on the rentals they give me of the same vehicle. New issue is between 7-3 when braking hard from 60+. Vehicle lunges forward and can hear transmission grinding and having issues switching gears thereafter.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the transmission was shifting gear, the vehicle was shuddering. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the valve body had caused the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
