NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2023 Ford F-150. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
After the vehicle sat parked for 12 days, upon initial startup, the vehicle experienced a total failure of the Electronic Brake Booster (EBB). The dashboard displayed multiple critical fault codes including "Brake System Failure," "Service AdvanceTrac," and "Check Brake System." The vehicle software triggered a safety interlock, refusing to shift out of Park, rendering the vehicle completely disabled. This failure is a direct match to the defect described in NHTSA Campaign 25V488 (Ford Recall 25S77). Ford’s official filing for that recall admits the EBB module is "susceptible to normal but infrequent voltage disturbances" which causes the EBB motor to enter a "faulted state" or shut down. My 2023 Lightning is currently excluded from this recall despite experiencing the exact same "voltage disturbance" failure mode upon waking from a sleep cycle. This is a critical safety defect that resulted in a total loss of power braking assist and vehicle immobilization. Ford is currently refusing to cover the $2,800 repair cost under the recall, despite the identical nature of the failure
I was driving and all of the dash lights came on simultaneously and I lost power braking ability while on the interstate. I was able to pull over and the truck shut off. I had to call a tow truck because it would not start back up. The AAA servicer reprogrammed the battery which turned all of the warning lights off except for the "push brake to start" warning and the truck will still not start because of this. The tech with AAA advised there is a recall related to this issue but my VIN search returns no results.

As I was driving the right rear door flung open and would not engage when pulled back in. Had to drive home with a door that would not shut. Yes safety was at risk for kids in back seat. Confirmed by previous reports and service department at dealership. No warning lamps that were noticed.
I was trying to park the vehicle and it unexpectedly started to accelerate. I had to slam on the brakes. This is not the first time this has occurred. It’s happened many times. I took it to the Ford dealership and they said they cannot find any problems so then I did some research on the Internet and found there’s other people saying the same thing so there’s clearly a problem with this vehicle. Unexpected acceleration.
I am reporting a failure of the manufacturer to provide a timely and safe remedy for Safety Recall 25V512. My local dealer, Springdale Ford in Springdale, Arkansas, officially advised me NOT to drive the vehicle on December 12, 2025, after a routine oil change, citing it as unsafe and at risk of a crash/rollaway. However, Ford has not provided a loaner or rental vehicle and has no ETA for parts. I am currently being forced to choose between driving an unsafe vehicle and being without a vehicle. They are considering giving me a rental vehicle, but the rental company they partner with does not allow their vehicles to tow RV trailers, which is why we purchased the Ford F-150. I am making monthly payments on the Ford truck and our RV travel trailer, plus insurance for both and storage fees for the RV, all while unable to drive our newly purchased vehicle of 6 months. Ford is failing to fulfill its obligation to remedy this safety defect in a reasonable manner. To compound this setback, they have asked us to increase our monthly payment by $200 to trade in our truck for a comparable vehicle, as if this were our fault.
I closed the passager side door and the back window shattered and blew out
My F150 2023, while driving at slower speeds on four different occasions while applying the brakes, the truck will start accelerating all on its own! I contacted a ford dealer and they verified on their end that the truck has done this. I have also read from other owners having this same situation.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact inspected the vehicle and became aware that the brake light located near the rear window was inoperable and the brake light had melted. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 33,321.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle was slipping into park unexpectedly. No warning light was illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V512000 (Power Train). The local dealer was contacted and confirmed that parts were on back order for the recall repair. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.
I have an open recall that has not been fixed. I’ve been reaching out to my nearest ford dealership and all I get back is the part is”ordered” or still on “back order”. I’ve been waiting since December for this to be resolved and still nothing. I bought the truck in November and immediately had it looked at. Now anything after market wheels/tires/supsension or lifts no shop wants to be liable or comfortable working on my truck until the recall is complete.
Rear Taillight assembly filled with water due to a crack. The water caused the bulb to burn out. Dealer tried to get Ford to cover the taillamp and the manufacturer denied the claim stating the crack was not a flaw in manufacturing. The dealer also said that they have seen several of these where the manufacturer wont cover this component under the bumper to bumper warranty. This assembly has never been tampered with, the truck has not been in an accident. The failure of this taillight is likely caused by over torqueing at ASSY at the plant. Besides being costly this is a safety hazard when brake lights and taillights fail. Also..this assembly I find out houses the module for the blind spot monitor.
The instrument cluster on my vehicle has failed intermittently and/or completely, resulting in loss of speedometer visibility and loss of critical warning indicator information. This includes safety-related alerts necessary for driver awareness, such as warning lights and vehicle status indicators. Due to this failure, the vehicle is unsafe to operate because the driver cannot reliably monitor speed or receive safety warnings required for safe driving. A repair order was opened at a Ford dealership to address this issue. The vehicle is covered by an extended warranty provider, which approved a repair request related to the instrument cluster failure on December 16, 2024. The warranty provider further confirmed approval for instrument cluster replacement on December 22, 2024. These approvals confirm the defect was acknowledged and authorized for repair. Despite the safety defect remaining unresolved, the dealership closed the repair order. Ford corporate customer service has confirmed that the repair order shows as closed on their end, even though the instrument cluster failure has not been corrected and the vehicle remains unsafe to operate. Closing the repair order disrupted manufacturer responsibility tracking and reimbursement eligibility while the safety defect persists. As a result, I have incurred out-of-pocket expenses including towing, rental vehicle costs, and related transportation expenses. This instrument cluster failure constitutes a safety-related defect under DOT and NHTSA guidelines because it prevents safe operation of the vehicle. I am requesting manufacturer accountability and corrective action to ensure this safety defect is properly addressed and tracked.
The drive keys fall out of the wiper arm heads which will cause the wiper arms to perform erratically and eventually lead to the wiper arms to become separated from the vehicle. I found the key lying in the cowl vent grill. Ford currently has a recall on this for other vehicles however it needs to expand the recall to include more vehicles including the 2023 F150 Lightning. The Safety Recall number is 22S26.
I purchased this vehicle from Ford about 2 months ago and brought it in for service over 4 weeks ago. The service department inspected the hub bolts and declared the vehicle unsafe to drive until the recall is completed due to sheered bolts. Although the recall says the parts are available, that is apparently not accurate. This is a huge safety issue and Ford put my family at risk when they decided to sell me this vehicle with the bolt issue and no parts available to remedy the situation. Ford customer service is telling me 3q2026. Manufacturer Recall Number23S65 NHTSA Recall Number23V896
The bolt related to this recall inevitably broke on 11/23/25 at 43,842 miles. Ford of Upland took my truck and provided me with a loaner vehicle for about a month and a half, until demanding that I return the loaner vehicle. I had no choice but to take my truck back as I do not have a second vehicle, and they didn’t offer me a solution. At the time of writing this, I have put ~800 miles on the truck since the bolt sheared off. It is now making a terrible noise from the rear end, which I have expressed to Ford of Upland, Colley Ford, and Ford Customer Service.. with no resolve. Ford Customer Service told me over the phone that they are “hoping” to have the parts to fix my truck in Q3 of this year (2026). I purchased this truck as it fit my everyday needs. I often tow which made this truck a good candidate. As I understand, the truck is not currently safe to drive, and definitely not capable of towing. Not having a capable truck is unacceptable. It seems that Ford is incapable of providing a reasonable solution. The truck has been “out of service” since 11/23/25, nearly 3 months at the time of writing this.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 45 MPH, the taillights, running lights, and indicators were inoperable. There were no warning lights illuminated. Upon further research, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V418000 (Exterior Lighting). The local dealer was contacted, the vehicle was visually inspected, but the vehicle was not officially diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 71,842.
Truck is burning oil. Talked to over 5 dealerships and they says it’s a problem that they know about and are waiting for ford to recall a section of the engine. Heard in Naples Fl all sheriff trucks are doing it and burning excessive amount of oil
I recieved the recall. It states parts are available. I called my dealer in Cortex, CO and was told they could not get the part to perform the repair.
We have an incomplete recall, we have been told not to drive vehicle since the wheel end hub bolt is broken by Ford. We have been in touch with Ford dealership as well as Ford Motor Co. since November 13, 2025 and are still waiting for the part. It’s been now 2 months with no estimated date given.
One the drivers side seat cushion, in the front left cushion area, the seam that connects two cushion busted with 36K miles, leaving foam is visible.
On November 10, 2025, our 2023 F150 powertrain failed for the second time in about a month. I was pulling away from a curb when the truck experienced a loss of power. The Ford service center diagnosed this as a PowerTrain Control Module failure. This is dangerous because I was driving when the failure occurred and the truck lost power. This could have been catastrophic on a highway or while traveling at a higher speed. There were NO warning lamps, messages or any other symptoms prior to the failure. Ford had just serviced the truck with an oil change on October 3, 2025 and then replaced a failed auxiliary fuel pump on October 7, 2025 that also led to a failure while driving.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford F-150. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V512000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.
Complaint Description The vehicle is equipped with a Ford 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission that exhibits erratic and unpredictable shifting behavior. The transmission frequently hesitates, shifts harshly, or delays engagement, particularly when accelerating from a stop, slowing down, or attempting to merge into traffic. At times, the vehicle fails to deliver power when the accelerator is pressed, creating a delay in acceleration. This is especially dangerous when pulling into intersections, making left turns across traffic, or merging onto roadways where immediate and predictable power is required to avoid collisions. The transmission also downshifts harshly and unexpectedly, causing sudden jerking and brief deceleration. These events can occur without warning and increase the risk of loss of vehicle control or rear-end collisions, particularly in stop-and-go traffic or at low speeds. In addition, the transmission often clunks or lurches into gear, including when shifting from park to drive or reverse. This creates unsafe conditions in parking lots and low-speed environments where precise vehicle control is necessary to avoid pedestrians or other vehicles. Because these issues occur inconsistently and without warning, the driver cannot reliably anticipate vehicle response. This unpredictability represents a safety defect that increases the risk of a crash during normal driving conditions.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 20 MPH, the vehicle violently jerked while depressing the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal while coasting the vehicle to the shoulder of the highway. Despite the failure, the contact placed the vehicle in 4WD, and the vehicle resumed normal operation. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic test determined that the driver’s and passenger’s side rear axles had broken and caused the failure. The contact was then notified about NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V512000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact was provided a repair number by the dealer and was instructed to contact the manufacturer for assistance. The manufacturer was notified several times about the recall, and the contact was later provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired and remained with the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 33,000.
The driver side headlamp did not work. I noticed both left and right headlamps had moisture inside. I took my truck to the dealership and they told me I would have to get an appointment for them to take digital images of the headlamps to send to Ford Motor. So they sent me home with only one headlamp in working order. I made the appointment. It took 2hrs to get the digital images. A crack appeared at the bottom of each headlamp at the exact same spot. I left the dealership the second time with only one headlamp working. 24 hours later, Ford Motor told the dealership they believed it was caused by an outside collision and would not be covered by the bumper to bumper warranty. The dealership offered to replace at cost and suggested I contact the State Attorney General’s office and try to mediate Ford’s decision. I made an appointment to replace both headlamps after the weekend at their earliest opening. I have kept the faulty headlamps. I believe Ford Motor is trying to mitigate cost of a faulty product at the expense of public safety. The States Attorney General attempted to mediate. However, a Consumer Affairs Legal Analyst from Ford wrote that the warranty was denied because the headlamp was damaged in a car accident. It was not.
The transmssion is shifting by itself from from a low gear (say 1st or 2nd) directly into 8th gear which bring the truck to a complete stop. This happend on May 30th while driving up my gravel driveway and I had the vehicle towed to the Ford Dealer where they inspected it and found nothing wrong. They said they did a software update but could not guantee that this would resolve the issue. I have been driving the truck with out issue up to today (10/21/2025) when it happened again in the same location. I was able to record a video of the dash and it is clear to see that it is shiting from 1st to 8th gear which brings the truck to a complet stop as that part of the driveway is uphill. I am concerned that if I was pulling out at an intersection and this happend I could get stuck in the intersection and hit by cross-traffic.
Ford has known about this potentially dangerous recall for 4 months and parts to repair still not available. Our car has been looked at and determined that repair needs to be done. I just talked to Ford and there is no ETA for the parts to repair and many vehicles on the road that need repair. There is something wrong.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford F-150. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V512000 (POWER TRAIN). However, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that a fluid spill was found on the ground. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the hub bolt had sheared off and damaged an unknown oil component located in the rear. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired. The contact stated that the dealer deemed the vehicle unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 14,146.
Our 2023 F150 has had two back-to-back powertrain failures. I was accelerating out of an intersection after the light turned green and suddenly experienced a loss of power. The Ford service center diagnosed this as a Transmission fluid auxiliary pump fault. This is dangerous because I was driving when the failure occurred and the truck lost power. This could have been catastrophic on a highway or while traveling at a higher speed. There were NO warning lamps, messages or any other symptoms prior to the failure. Ford had just serviced the truck with an oil change on October 3, 2025, four days before the failure. Then it happened again one month later. I will detail that in a second complaint.
NHTSA Safety Defect Report – 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Tailgate Light Bar Condensation My 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning has moisture and condensation building up inside the rear tailgate light bar. It looks exactly like the issue described in Ford recall 23S30, also known as NHTSA recall 23V-418. Even though my VIN is not included in that recall, my truck is showing the same symptoms. The condensation collects behind the lens, especially around the reverse light section, and becomes worse after it rains or after I wash the truck. Lately, I’ve noticed the reverse lights flicker at times, which makes me think the moisture is getting into the electrical components. If the reverse lights go out or stop working properly, it becomes a safety concern because other drivers and pedestrians may not see that I’m backing up. This could easily cause an accident, especially at night or in parking lots. I brought the truck to a Ford dealer and was told that my VIN isn’t part of the recall and that I’m just outside of the 36,000-mile warranty. The truck currently has around 37,000 miles. They said they couldn’t replace the light bar unless Ford adds my VIN to the recall. The issue clearly matches the same defect Ford already acknowledged, which involves moisture getting into the tailgate light bar due to cracks or poor sealing. I believe Ford’s recall should be expanded to include more 2023 model trucks like mine that are having the same problem. It’s not an isolated case, and I’ve seen other owners reporting identical issues online with newer builds. Since this involves lighting that affects safety when reversing, it should be handled even if the truck is just outside warranty coverage. I can provide photos and a short video showing the condensation inside the light bar and the flickering reverse lights if needed.
front camera fault, service required, pre-collision avoidance not available. Lane departure warning fault, service required. This is an ongoing problem since date of purchase, 9/23/2025
The rear passenger window rolled down and is stuck in down position. This is the second time this has happened in our F-150. It happened when we first bought the truck nearly two year ago and was fixed. I worry it was replaced with another faulty component. There have been numerous complaints of this happening and the issue is within the driver side door components.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford F-150. The contact stated that her husband had taken the vehicle in for service at a local dealer. The dealer was aware that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V512000 (Power Train). The dealer inspected the rear hub bolt and became aware that the bolt had fractured. The contact's husband was advised to leave the vehicle at the dealer because it was not safe to drive the vehicle with the fractured bolt. The contact had been advised by the dealer that the remedy was not yet available to complete the recall repair. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,828.

Reported a burning oil/chemical smell to the Ford service center early August and was told nothing was wrong. 2 days ago same smell appeared accompanied with large amount of smoke while driving. Immediately stopped and found flames behind drivers side front tire in engine. Put out the fire ourselves with fire extinguisher and was towed to nearest Ford service center. Ford states was a mechanical issue with the front differential causing an oil to leak, cause metal shavings, and ignite in flames.
My wife went to back out of our driveway. She was on the side of the driveway in some stones. She put the F150 into 4 Wheel High which she has done numerous times. She shifted the truck into reverse with her foot on the brake and the truck accelerated and hit a tree 10' away from the rear of the truck, The truck has been taken for evaluation. I have to report my truck accelerated on its own. I called Ford Motor twice and was on hold for an hour with no luck. There were no warnings at all on the dash. Insurance Adjuster looked at it and told me to have it towed the the body shop for further evaluation. My wife was hurt and a contractor was standing in the are near the tree. The Truck is now at SJM Auto in Sugarloaf PA

I was notified that my Truck has a safety recall and immediately reported this to Frontier Ford via email on 8/18/25 per the service advisors request. Frontier Ford [XXX] [XXX] It's now been 4 months and I'm still waiting for the replacement part. I've been told by the service advisor that it is ok to drive my truck, unless I hear any noise from the axle. No inspections have been done. I'm concerned about safety I don't want to overreact, but at the same time it's been 4 months. Please advise. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Ford is aware of an issue on the 2023 Ford F150 with Pro Power Inverter. When the inverter turns on, the RF frequency emitted blocks the tire pressure sensors from sending their signal creating a fault. Dealers are recommending that owners replace their sensors rather than performing the fix. In many cases the vehicle is now out of warranty requiring customer to pay for the fix.
I received an "important safety recall" notice 25S82 from Ford motor company in August, 2025. The notice from Ford states that replacement parts are available and to schedule an appointment with a local Ford dealership to replace necessary parts and address the safety recall concerns. Since August of 2025, I have contacted my dealership several times and they continue to indicate that parts are still not available from Ford to address the safety recall / concerns. I called the number on Ford's recall notice again today and they either don't answer or immediately hang up on customers like me when the call does go through to speak to an agent. Nine (9) months have passed now and neither Ford nor their dealership network has done anything to address the manufacture defects / safety concerns associated with my vehicle. My dealership has indicated there is a nation-wide back order on the replacement parts but that conflicts with Ford's written communication to consumers and it's no excuse for inaction that could put public safety further at risk. Please take necessary actions to increase Ford's focus on and resolution to this persistent risk. Thank you.
