I PURCHASED AT 2005 FORD FREESTYLE IN 2006. MY VEHICLE NOW HAS 88,800 MILES ON IT AS OF 07/18/11. OVER THE PAST YEAR MY VEHICLE HAS BEGAN ACCELERATING WHEN I SHIFT THE VEHICLE INTO A FORWARD OR REVERSE GEAR. MY FOOT IS ALWAYS FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE. RECENTLY, I HAVE BEEN TURNING THE A/C ON LOW AND WATCHING THE RPM'S BEFORE I SHIFT INTO GEAR. MY CAR WILL STILL JUMP ON ME AND THE MOTOR WILL ACCELERATE EVEN AT 500 RPM"S. I WILL NOT GO THROUGH A DRIVE THRU BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE MY CAR WILL CAUSE THE MOST PROBLEMS AND I NEVER KNOW WHEN MY VEHICLE WILL BEGIN TO MALFUNCTION. I HAVE CALLED 2 FORD DEALERSHIPS AND THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, BUT THEY WOULD HAVE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BEFORE THEY CAN DIAGNOSE ANYTHING. THEY STATE IT COULD BE A NUMBER OF ISSUES. I AM RELUCTANT TO TAKE IT IN CAUSE I KNOW THAT I WILL BE SPENDING LOTS OF MONEY AND THE PROBLEM WILL NOT BE RESOLVED. I THINK FORD NEEDS TO ISOLATE THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT. THIS SEEMS TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO THE ISSUES THAT SOME OF THE FORD TAURUS'S HAD IN THE PAST. THIS CAR IS JUST A REVAMPED FORD TAURUS....DIFFERENT LOOK SAME PROBLEMS! *KB

SINCE JULY, MY CAR HAS BEEN LUNGING BOTH FORWARD AND IN REVERSE WHEN MY FOOT IS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR. I HAVE COME CLOSE TO RUNNING INTO CARS, PEOPLE, AND MY GARAGE DUE TO THESE SURGES. IT STARTED OFF HAPPENING FROM TIME TO TIME. NOW IT IS DAILY AND SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES PER DAY. IN ADDITION TO THE SURGES, THERE ARE TIMES IT STRUGGLES TO ACCELERATE. *TR
OUR 2005 FORD FREESTYLE IS LUNGING FORWARD AT LOW SPEEDS. WE NEED TO FIRMLY PRESS ON THE BRAKES TO STOP IT WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS! AT THIS POINT, THE ENGINE STALLS. 2005 FORD FREESTYLE LURCHES FORWARD WITHOUT ANY ACCELERATOR INPUT OR WARNING. I AM SURE THAT IT IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR INJURY. THIS STARTED AT ABOUT 140,000 MILES THE FIRST TIME, AND IS GETTING WORSE. VERY DANGEROUS EVENT WHEN IT HAPPENS. FROM WHAT I GATHER FROM OTHERS ON LINE IT IS A PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY. THIS IS FOR SURE A SAFETY ISSUE AND FLAW IN THE DESIGN AND USE OF THE THROTTLE BODY WHICH SHOULD BE MADE WHOLE AND FOR SURE BE PUT ON A RECALL TO CORRECT BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT. BEING IT HAPPENS WHEN AT AN IDLE IF COULD CAUSE A COLLISION WITH A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF YOU, BUT WORSE THAN THAT COULD BE A CHILD OR PERSON WALKING INFRONT OF THE VEHICLE AND SUDDENLY BEING HIT BY THE LURCHING CAR. *TR
CAR LUNGES UNEXPECTEDLY AT SLOW SPEEDS ESPECIALLY WHEN PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACES WITH FOOT ON BRAKE. CAR STALLS AFTER IDLING RESTARTS IN FAILSAFE MODE CAR THEN ACCELERATES VERY SLOW WITH UNEXPECTED LUNGES CAR ALSO STALLS AFTER REVERSING. THIS MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH A/C I HAVE NOT HAD AS MANY FAIL SAFE OCCURRENCES DURING THE WINTER. THIS SEEMS TO OCCUR EVERYTIME I DRIVE THE CAR IN WARM WEATHER. WE HAVE TAKEN TO A MECHANIC BEFORE THEY WERE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. REPLACED COILS ON ONE VISIT BUT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. PURCHASED VEHICLE USED AND HAD THIS PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIX. PURCHASED CAR IN JUNE 2010. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH THE BRAKES ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AND THE ENGINE REVVED TO A VERY HIGH RPM. THE FAILURE ALSO OCCURRED WHILE IN REVERSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
WITHOUT WARNING, WHEN MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE IS IN DRIVE OR REVERSE, IT SURGES AND I HAVE TO BE READY TO BRAKE OR CRASH INTO SOMETHING. FOLLOWING THE SURGE, THE ORANGE WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON AND I HAVE TO SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT, AND THEN IT WILL GO AWAY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE NOT HAD ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS LIKE MINE. THEY SCANNED THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THERE WERE NO CODES. THEY ADVISED THAT UNLESS I CAN MAKE THE SURGE HAPPEN, NOT TO LEAVE THE CAR. *TT
FOR MONTHS, CAR HAS SURGED FORWARD OR BACKWARD DEPENDING ON GEAR. ALTHOUGH A LITTLE FRIGHTENING, IT HAS BEEN EASILY STOPPED BY APPLYING THE BREAK FIRMLY. ON JUNE 27, 2011, THE ENGINE UNEXPECTEDLY REVVED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE IN PARK, NO ONE IN DRIVER SEAT. LAST SUMMER A/C COMPRESSOR WAS REPLACED, PROBLEMS SEEMED TO BEGIN AFTER THAT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. WHENEVER THE GEARS BEGAN TO SHIFT FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WOULD LUNGE FORWARD AND THEN BACKWARDS. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH ALL OF A SUDDEN THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD DECREASE TO 35 MPH WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND THE VEHICLE WOULD ALSO SLOW DOWN. ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WOULD ILLUMINATE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST BUT COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE NOR WERE ANY ERROR CODES DISPLAYED. OCCASIONALLY WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND THEN BACK ON IT WOULD RESET ITSELF. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 86,000.
WHILE IDLING MY FREESTYLE WILL ACCELERATE WITHOUT MY FOOT BEING ON THE GAS PEDAL. I AM ALWAYS AFRAID TO TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE WHILE IDLING JUST WAITING FOR THE CAR TO JUMP FORWARD. *KB

THE VIN WAS NOT ACCEPTED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN, BUT THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000.

PURCHASED CAR USED FROM FORD DEALER AND BOUGHT EXTENDED WARRANTY. EXPERIENCED CAR ACCELERATING OR LUNGING AS CAR WAS SHIFTED TO REVERSE WITH FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE. TOOK IT TO DEALER UNDER WARRANTY AND REPAIRS WERE MADE. IT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. NOW WE ARE OUT OF THE WARRANTY AND IT IS GETTING WORSE. NOW IT LUNGES AND TRIES TO ACCELERATE WHILE SITTING AT A STOP AND WILL ALSO STALL REQUIRING AN ENGINE RESTART. SEEMS VERY VERY DANGEROUS. I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. WITH NORMAL DRIVING, THIS VEHICLE WILL SURGE IN SPEED WHEN PLACED IN REVERSE AND DRIVE. I WILL BE IN A PARKING LOT OR MY HOME GARAGE AND START THE ENGINE, PLACE CAR IN REVERSE, AND THE CAR WILL IMMEDIATELY SURGE IN SPEED IF MY FOOT IS NOT FIRMLY PLACED ON THE BRAKE. THIS HAS ALMOST RESULTED IN SEVERAL ACCIDENTS IN PUBLIC LOTS. THIS HAS HAPPENED FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS AND SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. IT HAS RECENTLY HAPPENED WHEN I PLACE THE CAR IN "DRIVE". DURING THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT, MY ENGINE FAIL SAFE LIGHT CAME ON TO INDICATE A PROBLEM. I HAVE RECENTLY HAD THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY REPLACED TO THE AMOUNT OF $665.35. I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THIS PART WAS REDESIGNED FOR LATER MODELS. I HOPE THIS RESOLVES THIS ISSUE. 1. THE AIR CONDITIONER FAILED, HAD TO BE REPLACED JUNE 2011. IT JUST GRADUALLY DID NOT COOL THE AIR AT ALL. FAN ON AC WORKED FINE, ALL CONTROLS AS WELL, JUST NO COOL AIR. $850. THE VEHICLE LUNGES FORWARD OR BACKWARD, MORE NOTICEABLE WHEN STARTING TO BACK UP. HAD VALVES CLEANED. WORKED TEMPORARILY. MY WIFE DRIVES A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE AND IT HAS A TENDENCY TO LUNGE FORWARD WHEN PUT INTO DRIVE, WITHOUT HER FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. SHE KEEPS HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE, BUT IT STILL LUNGES. MY WIFE WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE WITH HER FOOT LIGHTLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD, CAUSING HER TO PRESS HARD ON THE BRAKES. THE CAR DID STOP, BUT IT ALMOST HIT THE CAR IN THE NEXT PARKING SPACE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS CAR HAS DISPLAYED THIS PROBLEM. INCIDENT HAPPENED WHILE ON VACATION IN ANOTHER STATE. CAR WAS IDLING WITH AIR CONDITIONER RUNNING FOR APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES, UPON SHIFTING GEAR INTO REVERSE AND BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, CAR SURGED INTO REVERSE WITHOUT FOOT ACCELERATING THE PETAL. SERVICE ADVISOR RECOMMENDED MULTIPLE ITEMS, INCLUDING REPLACING THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY, PCV VALVE, PCV CONTROL VALVE, REPROGRAMMING THE PCM. UPON ADVISE OF SERVICE ADVISOR THAT IT WAS A DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT "CAR COULD SURGE AND STALL WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS ON THE INTERSTATE" ON THE LONG DRIVE HOME, WE AUTHORIZED TROPICAL FORD TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY ( REPLACED WITH FP # 6F9Z-9E926-A) AND REPROGRAM THE PCM.

SUDDEN ACCELERATION AT SLOW SPEED BOTH IN FORWARD AND REVERSE. WORSE WHEN AIR CONDITIONING IS ON. DEALERSHIP STATES THAT IT IS A THROTTLE BODY ISSUE. VERY COSTLY TO REPAIR, VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. ALREADY RAN INTO CART CORRAL AT GROCERY STORE WHEN CAR LURCHED FORWARD. NO DAMAGE. *TR
WE HAVE EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH OUR FREESTYLE, AND AT THIS POINT ARE FACED WITH A FAILED THROTTLE BODY, WHICH WILL COST $900 TO REPLACE (DEALER QUOTE). SEARCHING THE INTERNET REVEALS THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON, KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE FREESTYLE, AND ITS SISTER CARS (THE 500 & SABLE) ALL BUILD BY FORD WITH THE SAME ENGINE. THE PROBLEM CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO LURCH WHILE AT IDLE, TO PERHAPS 5-10 MPH, ENDANGERING ANYONE IN THE VEHICLE'S PATH (IE, PEDESTRIANS, CARS AHEAD IN A DRIVE-THRU LANE, ETC.) FORD HAS PRODUCED SEVERAL SUCCESSIVE VARIANTS OF THE THROTTLE BODY, INDICATING THE NEWER ONES DO NOT HAVE THE FATAL DESIGN FLAW THAT PLAGUES THE ORIGINAL. WHY AM I FORCED TO PURCHASE A REPLACEMENT FOR AN OBVIOUSLY (AT THIS POINT) BADLY DESIGNED PRODUCT? THESE CARS SHOULD BE RECALLED, AND WE SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR THE EXPENSE. *TR
I WAS IN THE DRIVE THREW OF A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY PLUNGED FORWARD ,I HAD TO PUT BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE TO KEEP FROM HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME,AND THEN THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE WENT INTO A FAILSAFE MODE. THE MECHANIC I TOOK IT TO INFORMED ME THAT MOST OF THESE MODELS WERE DOING THAT BUT FORD WOULDN'T DO A RECALL BECAUSE A LAWSUIT WAS CHEAPER. WHEN CAR IS STOPPED, TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE, FOOT USUALLY ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR SUDDENLY SURGES FORWARD FOR 2 -3 SECONDS. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES SINCE AND HAVE TO THIS POINT BEEN ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE DAMAGE OR INJURY HAS OCCURRED. *TR

THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO APPLY THE BRAKES UNTIL THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THE VEHICLE THEN STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE SEL WITH JUST OVER 77,000 MILES. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE LUNGING AT LOW SPEEDS (DRIVING FORWARD AND REVERSE) AND ONE TIME WHERE IT LUNGED, STALLED AND ENTERED INTO SAFE MODE WHILE BACKING UP. THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS ON DURING THE INCIDENTS. I USE THE BRAKES TO STOP IT FROM LUNGING BUT THAT IS BECAUSE I EXPECT IT TO HAPPEN. FORD PRESENTLY IS LOOKING AT VEHICLE AND WAS TOLD THEY RESET THE COMPUTER AND WE NEEDED A TUNE UP AND AS OF THIS MOMENT, THEY ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY GETTING THINGS BACK TO US. AFTER EACH INCIDENT THE MESSAGE CENTER WOULD DISPLAY "FAILSAFE MODE" BUT WOULD NOT RETURN AFTER THR ENGINE WAS RESTARTED. VERY UNSAFE-MY WIFE ALMOST RAN OVER CHILDREN IN THE PICK UP LINE AT SCHOOL. I AM CONCERNED THE CAR MAY LUNGE INTO FAST MOVING TRAFFIC. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER 5-3-11 TO ASK THEM ABOUT YOUR INVESTIGATION AND WHETHER SOMETHING CAN NOW BE DONE. PURCHASED USED FORD FREESTYLE DECEMBER 2010. RAN FINE UNTIL WARM WEATHER AND USE OF AIR CONDITIONER. WITH A/C ON, THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL SEEMS TO OFTEN GREATLY OVERSHOOT THE CORRECT SETTING WHEN SHIFTING FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE OR REVERSE, WHICH CAUSES A SIGNIFICANT ENGINE RPM INCREASE AND A MOMENTARY "LUNGE" IF THE BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED VERY FIRMLY. MANY VEHICLES DO THIS TO A MINOR EXTENT BUT THE FREESTYLE IS FAR AND AWAY THE WORST I'VE EVER SEEN. THIS DOES CAUSE UNANTICIPATED VEHICLE MOVEMENT AND COULD INJURE A CHILD, PASSERBY ETC OR CAUSE A VEHICLE TO ENTER AN INTERSECTION. MY WIFE IS CERTAINLY UNNERVED BY IT. EFFECT IS IN FACT SOMETIMES THERE IN COOL WEATHER BUT TO A MUCH LESSER EXTENT. READING FORUMS AND THINKING ABOUT THIS (I'M AN ENGINEER AND SAE MEMBER) IT MAY VERY WELL BE SOMETHING LIKE A WORN THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR INTERACTING WITH AN ECU SOFTWARE GLITCH, MAY VERY WELL BE FIXABLE IN SOFTWARE. MY CONCERN IS THAT THERE WERE CHILDREN RIDING THEIR BICYCLES AT THE TOP OF MY DRIVEWAY. NO VEHICLE MALFUNCTION OR WARNING ERRORS WERE DISPLAYED AT THIS TIME. THE SECOND OCCURRENCE HAPPENED ABOUT AN HOUR LATER. WE HAD JUST WALKED OUT OF OUR LOCAL COSTCO STORE AND WERE PARKED. THE CAR WAS IDLING, IN REVERSE, WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER RUNNING. THE VEHICLE LUNGED BACK AGAIN (12-24 INCHES). AGAIN, THERE WERE PEOPLE WALKING IN THE PARKING LOT. WITH THIS OCCURRENCE, AN ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR WAS DISPLAYED. MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR. THE "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE" WARNING WAS DISPLAYED ON THE DASHBOARD ALONG WITH THE ORANGE WRENCH SYMBOL. THE CAR STALLED OUT THIS TIME. I REMOVED THE KEYS FROM THE IGNITION AND LET THE CAR SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES. I THEN RESTARTED THE CAR AND NO WARNING LIGHTS WERE DISPLAYED. AT THIS TIME, WE DROVE THE CAR HOME. THE FOLLOWING WEEK, WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A THROTTLE BODY ISSUE.

MY FOOT WAS DIRECTLY ON THE BRAKE AND I PUSHED EVEN HARDER ON THE BRAKE AND MY DAUGHTER CHECKED MY FOOT LOCATION AS WELL. PROBABLY WOULD HAVE JUMPED THE CURB HAD I NOT BEEN ABLE TO STOP IT. IN THE SHOP AT MY FORD DEALER NOW AND THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT I NEED THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED. NO MONEY FROM FORD IS AVAILABLE FOR THIS NOR FROM MY EXTENDED WARRENTLY AND NOW I MUST MAKE A DECISION WHETHER TO TAKE MY CAR BACK WITHOUT DOING THE REPAIR THAT I CANNOT AFFORT TO DO NOW. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A COVERED SAFETY EXPENSE AS THE PRICE IS OVER 500.00+ AND I AM PAYING FOR ANOTHER REPAIR THAT WAS DONE WHILE UNDER WARRENTLY FOR THE SHIFT ISSUE THAT NEEDED A NEW SHIFTER BEZEL. THIS WAS DONE AT 32,000 MILES AND HAD NEVER BEEN TOTALLY FIXED BUT NOW NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ONCE AGAIN AT 300.00 ESTIMATED COST.
