NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2023 Ford Maverick. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
23,450 miles today for an oil change. Both CV are bad. Drivers side is terrible with no parts eta. Passages is leaking grease and about to go as well per the tech. That is not the first I’ve heard of this but at 23,000 miles is insane. This could cause an accident if failing while turning.
CV axles both going bad at 50,000 miles
While driving down US-69, while attempting to pass a vehicle at about 80 mph, the vehicle shut off and proceeded to stop accelerating, as well as started to slow itself down. The instrument cluster flashed quickly before shutting off, and the radio also shut off. The cabin lights came on, and I had to switch to the right lane to quickly get onto the side of the road where it gradually slowed itself down and threw itself into park. I had taken the key out, and simply turned it back on, and everything seemed to work as normal after the fact. There were no indicators that this would happen, it was sudden and almost caused me to get rear ended by a semi truck.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle was wobbling to the left and to the right. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with CV axle failure. The contact was informed that the CV axle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the parts were on backorder. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated that upon unlocking the vehicle remotely, the exterior lights of the vehicle failed to illuminate. Additionally, the contact stated that the cabin lights failed to illuminate upon entering the vehicle, making it difficult to find the ignition switch to start the vehicle at night. Additionally, the contact stated that he had received notification from the Mobile App that certain vehicle functions were disabled due to low battery and to contact the dealer. Additionally, the contact stated that the battery charge displayed 11.4 Volts instead of 12 Volts after charging the battery overnight and for an extended time. The contact stated that while driving 50 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle lost drive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact pulled to the side of the road. The contact stated that upon turning off and restarting the vehicle, the vehicle responded as needed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the vehicle was diagnosed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 25V158000 (Power Train, Electrical System) and 25V019000 (Electrical System); however, the VIN was not included in the recalls. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.

When I start my truck, a very loud, piercing noise comes out of the speakers. The has happened 2 times over appx 2 years. The info screen on the dash freezes up. It can only be stop by turning the ignition off.
Started to develop a rumble/stumble upon acceleration. It seems to be getting worse. Finally took it in the dealer. The dealer confirmed that it is the CV axles. They need replacing. Dealer said no parts in stock and not sure when they will arrive. WTH. I asked about driving and they said keep on motoring. What. How can this be good for all the other connected parts! It shutters so bad I am not confident it will not cause me to have an accident. This is a major issue with the drive-line components. Ford needs to issue a recall and redesign this part or I will be replacing these again at my cost. I only have 39k milage
The truck is a hybrid and has just 12,000 miles on it. Water is leaking inside the cab on the passenger side and has created mold in the carpet and padding. It has now been at the dealers going on 4 weeks and they say they are having a hard time finding where it is leaking in from. I have seen several other posts about it being the window or A/C fresh air intake.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH, the brake warning light illuminated. The contact attempted to depress the brake pedal; however, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The contact shifted into neutral and coasted to a patch of grass where the vehicle came to a stop. The vehicle was turned off and after a while and shifted into park and restarted. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle and became aware that the lights were no longer illuminated and continued driving. The dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed there were no recalls on the VIN. The contact stated that approximately 3 months after the first failure, the failure reoccurred while driving approximately 45 MPH, causing the contact to coast onto the off-ramp and a curb while in neutral to stop the vehicle. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to restart and drive the vehicle to the dealer with the hazard lights activated. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 18,000.
The wiring harness on this vehicle is made of a soy based material, I had a rodent chew through this coating and my wiring harness, it caused my rear turn signal to go out, I have a 3 year 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty on the vehicle but Ford does not cover this, you have to pay to have it fixed yourself and they replace it with the same material, I am worried that it will happen again and again I will have to pay to have it fixed, I feel that Ford should be responsible for this and have it fixed. I found out that Ford is not the only manufacturer that uses this product.
Upon accelerating from about 40 to 50 mph violent shaking was occurring , took to dealership CV axels were found to be the problem and were replaced at 17,000 miles now at 29,000 miles they are doing the same thing and need to be replaced again took to dealership waiting on new CV axels to be replaced again
CV axel has gone bad, heavy vibration. At 40,000 miles
On 1028/24, driving at approximately 55 mph in the right lane of a local highway, the front collision braking system engaged almost totally stopping my vehicle. There were no vehicles, animals, nor pedestrians in front of my vehicle. I was able to pull to the shoulder. The collection detection icon appeared on the screen, as well as the check engine light, and the wrench. Then a message saying collision warning system unavailable, then service vehicle immediately. The drive gear dial remained in drive (D) position and was flashing. From there, with my warning light activated, I was able to get the vehicle to go up to 25 mph in order to drive to the Ford dealership nearby. I was told by the service department that they operate on appointments only, I would "try to look at it soon." The Ford Pass App states a powertrain malfunction, pre-collision assist not available, and service engine soon warning. Even if the system resets itself when vehicle turned back on, it is totally unsafe to drive in traffic not knowing if these systems will unexpected fail again, causing an accident and injury. I understand that this problem has occurred with other drivers on this model in the recent past.
My wife and I were involved in an accident where we were stopped and a vehicle rear-ended us at approximately 45mph, centered on the rear of the truck. My wife was in the passenger seat and I was driving. My seat collapsed backwards completely, and my wife's seat collapsed within about 2 inches of the rear seat. When mine collapsed, the headrest came out most of the way, and I slid backwards, hitting the top, back of my head on the rear seat just below the head rest, breaking the skin and leaving a mark of blood visible in the photos.
Loss of motive control ongoing issue. This is documented problem being investigated by NTHSA, R2Q4014. Functional issue: • Engine flips into Neutral unexpectedly. Vehicle coasts to a stop, where it flips into Park on its own. • Vehicle requires a restart to move gear out of Neutral. After restarting vehicle, vehicle can operate on limited power that maxes out at about 35 mph. Acceleration is dramatically reduced, gradually ramping up as the vehicle continues to drive — the acceleration pedal does not control speed. Coming to a complete stop while driving with the vehicle in this reduced power mode requires another gradual ramp up to speed, making typical street driving difficult because it may take 30-45 seconds for the vehicle to ramp up to adequate speed (ramp from zero to 35mph), frustrating other drivers behind he vehicle who may think the slow speed is intentional. • After the vehicle has sat powered down for a number of minutes, it can be started up again at full power. I have seen this refractory period as low as 15 minutes and as high at 45-ish minutes. This issue has happened to me multiple times, 9 as of last count. Ford has attempted a fix twice now, and the issue persists. I would be happy to discuss full experience and how Ford has responded, or rather not responded, with your investigative team. Thank you for looking into this issue.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel started shaking, prompting the contact to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle was pulled over, and a squealing, clicking, and grinding sound started coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on three separate occasions and was diagnosed with a CV shaft failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
This vehicle will reduce or cut throttle application/response relative to how many degrees the steering wheel is turning. When trying to pull out in traffic if you have the wheel turned beyond a set angle the throttle doesn't respond as expected and acceleration is greatly reduced. It will also cut the throttle if you pull out and then turn only to fully accelerate as the wheel is straightened out again. Two very dangerous examples I've experienced are 1: pulling onto a "freeway" that has a few side roads with perpendicular access. With the wheel turned the truck is very slow to accelerate when first pulling onto the expressway but suddenly will as the wheel is straightened. 2: When going across 2 lanes of traffic and making a turn to join traffic the truck will accelerate as expected across the first lanes, loose power as you turn, and then accelerate fully again as the wheel is straightened. While an argument could be made to just sit and wait until there is more time to join traffic, there are moments when being able to accelerate hard are necessary. This vehicle will either not accelerate or will reduce acceleration based on angles of steering. I believe this is a dangerous situation that most experienced drivers are not going to be expecting when they have to join fast moving traffic. Following web forums this is an issue other owners have experienced.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated the check warning engine light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve sensor had failed. The sensor inside the valve failed due to condensation getting into the valve and short-circuiting the sensor. The EGR valve sensor had been replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 44,000.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, there was a loud clucking sound coming from the front end of the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with a fractured front stabilizer and stabilizer link. The front stabilizer and stabilizer link were replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 8,000.
I started the Car and it made loud boom boom sounds like as if I was at a loud concert for about 10 seconds. That stopped but then loud static or electrical sound continued even after car was turned off. Re started and the sound continued. The initial sound shook me and wife. Where wife refuses to get back in. Also the initial sound wife said she smelt smoke. I faintly smelled a burnt wire smell. The next day while driving the system made more of the static/ electrical noise and didn’t stop until I parked and shut off system for about 10 min. I will be taking truck into dealer ship tomorrow.
The vehicle shakes during acceleration, specifically in the 40mph-65mph range. The shaking is worst around 55-60mph, especially—but not exclusively—when accelerating from a stop. The shaking does not occur at these speeds while coasting; acceleration prompts the issue. This is a known problem among 2022 Maverick owners, according to online forums including Maverick Truck Club, Reddit, and influencers on YouTube. Drivers widely report that the CV Axle is the culprit here, and report that replacing the CV Axle alleviates the shaking.
Last visit was 1/13/25. I am having constant 12 volt battery issues. I have been to Autonation Ford in Memphis 3 times. They take the battery out of my truck put it on a machine and charge it and tell me my bettery is fine every time. My truck will start and run fine for 2 or 3 weeks then i will have starting issues or battery saver issues. I cannot safely leave my house without a jumpstarter because this bad battery is in my truck.
I am experiencing a serious safety issue with my 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid, which involves powertrain malfunction and sudden loss of power while driving. The issue first appeared on [XXX], when I received a Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power warning in the FordPass app and noticed that the vehicle was losing power intermittently. Since then, I have taken my vehicle to the dealership three times for diagnostics and repairs, but the issue persists. Service history and failed repair attempts: [XXX] – I visited Folsom Lake Ford to address this issue, but the dealer claimed the vehicle was “operating normally.” [XXX] – I took my car to Future Ford of Sacramento, requesting diagnostics and repairs for the transmission. The dealership replaced the CV axles but did not acknowledge or resolve the powertrain issue. [XXX] – The same error occurred again, and I returned to Future Ford of Sacramento. The dealer once again failed to find or fix the problem. [XXX] – Hours after picking up the car, the Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power error reappeared in FordPass. Possible Link to Known Ford Maverick Issues: Ford has already issued recalls for similar problems affecting Ford Maverick (2022–2023) and Bronco Sport models related to 12V battery failures that cause power loss. However, my VIN is not included in any official recall, despite showing the same symptoms. This issue is extremely dangerous, as the vehicle unexpectedly loses power while driving, creating a serious risk of an accident, especially on highways. Suspected Fraud by the Dealer: Despite multiple service visits, the dealership has not provided a detailed diagnostic report. I suspect the dealer is simply resetting the error codes instead of fixing the problem. Investigate whether this is a widespread issue among 2023 Ford Maverick models. Determine if Ford should issue a recall for this powertrain problem. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission inadvertently shifted into neutral(N). There was no warning light illuminated. The failure recurred the next day while driving 70-75 MPH, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
Rear view camera continues to freeze and produce inaccurate pictures. Dealership advised that Ford Engineering has no remedy for this yet, and this is now on going for 6 months. Recall was made, but with no remedy available.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V684000 (Back Over Prevention); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact stated that while reversing out of the driveway, the back-over prevention camera failed to display an image behind the vehicle. The passenger had to verbally inform the driver of what was behind the vehicle. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 12,377. 2023 Ford Maverick 2.0L engine current mileage 5300 Noticed oil leak on top of engine valve cover. Ford Mechanic stated there are (3) current service related engine leak issues with Maverick. (1) Plastic valve cover cracked (2) Turbo Oil leak (3) Timing Cover Leak. Mechanic stated a die test will need to be performed. After review of online forums, this appears to be a more common issue and can cause engine fire, especially since High Pressure fuel pump is also located on top of the engine. With Ford spreading repairs across three known issues, A recall investigation should be opened. Repair Sevice schedule for 9/19/24. Can provide repair invoices if desired after service. From research the valve cover, most likely culprit based on oil leak location, is a 2 week repair.
pre collision assist stops working or false alert when driving around 25-35 miles i had the truck for about 15 months and had many issues with the pre - collision sensor / camera. i took the truck to the dealer and could not duplicate the issue or fix it the sensor show and sound the alarm about crash and no car close in the front of the truck. some times the alert sound when a car is parked on the side and i am driving in a small street i have the alert recorded in the ford mobile App also rear brake locks without pressing the pedal on highway driving
Shortly after startup the infotainment screen on my Maverick froze. After shifting into reverse it was unable to display the reverse camera image. I attempted several shifts between Drive, Park, and Reverse and it remained frozen. I attempted a short key cycle, powering the truck down, including opening the drivers door in an attempt to cycle power to the infotainment and upon restart it remained frozen. After arriving at my destination and leaving the power off for 10-15 minutes it returned to normal behavior on the next key cycle. I have video of the failure occurring, including attempted solutions noted above.
Note: Nobody was hurt, I am pre-emptively reporting this as I see it as a potentially dangerous issue. Transmission can jump/nudge the car a bit, especially in cold starts and if the engine is under load (e.g. AC or Heat). I've seen it online in Reddit reported, but mine seems to be a fairly strong version of it. It occurs pretty much every time the engine is cold. As I learned in a trip, if you don't press the brake hard enough, it can move. We did a road trip. I was stopped at a light (fully stopped). Brakes were pressed hard enough to not move, but not 'to the floor'. The vehicle jumped and moved about a foot into the crosswalk when I was stopped properly before then. Freaked me out. Nobody was in the crosswalk, so thankfully nobody was hurt. But this could be very dangerous behavior in a city where there are a lot a people. A surprising lurch when you think it's stopped isn't safe, and is going to create a liability for me. Me living near a big city, it's a worry. I've already brought it to a dealer about this, they said 'it's normal for mavericks' after investigating it for 25 days. I will re-raise this with them, but am not expecting much. I ran the truck with a diagnostic tool I own, no codes thrown through the bus, no warning lights during the event either. Vehicle was travelling on freeway at freeway speeds suddenly without notable cause the vehicle electrical stopped, giving multiple warning in succession, cutting speed rapidly to 35 mph, with no acceleration pedal response and an automatic speed of 35 on battery power with the ability to break, but with no control of speed and only regulated by break pedal. Pulled vehicle to side of road and put in park, parking break automatically engaged. Vehicle had alarms on all automatic systems being off. Turning vehicle on and off did not effect response. After checking engine visually, was able to turn vehicle on with no alarms or issues. This has happened in both my Mavericks and almost led to a fatal collision in the 2022 Maverick.
The manufacturer has not corrected the recall in a timely manner. The recall 24V684 was started in September 2024. It is six month later March 2025 and no fix has been identified.
I have just recently bought a brand new truck, a hybrid model. Not a single mile on it when I purchased it, and I strongly feel that I almost died or caused an accident, completely not my fault but the truck’s fault. This has happened on 3 separate occasions. The first two times, as I was driving up the highway on a mountain road, I lost power, but just kind of chalked it up to maybe the fuel sloshing around, and no other vehicles were around me. The third time, I was returning home from work, on a busy 4-lane highway that goes across the pass and over the mountains, I was in the left lane, a semi truck was to my right, and a semi truck was behind me, we were passing the slower truck that was on the right, and I was traveling at around 55 mph, the truck completely shut off and was flashing red at me to pull to the side of the road. I lost all power, the steering, gas, and everything was not working. I need to mention that I was in front of semi truck, a larger truck that cannot stop on a dime, so he had to swerve to miss me, as I did not have control of the truck. The slower truck went by me and there was a another pickup truck behind him, and there was a little bit of a gap between them, so I jerked the wheel over and drove into the ditch. It was absolutely frightening, and kind of switched something in my head that I was very close to causing a large crash and maybe a death, of myself or someone else. I was in the ditch and the truck would not start back up. Nothing worked. To add to that, I was in a spot of the mountains that I do not get cell phone service. So I popped the hood and just sat there trying to turn the ignition and start the vehicle. 30 minutes passed and I slammed the hood and got back inside the truck and this time the truck turned over, but it said it was running on electric only, and the check engine light was, so I was able to limp home which was about 30 miles away, driving 20-30 mph. It sent the codes to my phone and I contacted the dealer.
Under 19k Ford replace my axle underwarranty. now 22000 miles the axle is broken again.
Saturday [XXX] I was driving on the [XXX] in SW PA and as I attempted to accelerate there was no power. I looked down at my transmission dial and it was set in neutral. I rolled the dial back to drive and pushed the gas and was able to accelerate. This is the 5th TIME this has happened in this vehicle 3 while driving on the Interstate, 2 while accelerating after a stop. Apparently there is a fix for this, recall 23V330/24S33 . I have been working with a local ford dealer to rectify the situation but it has not been resolved. I guess they updated most of the modules in my truck hoping to unlock a TCM update to preform the correct recall but it didn't work so they can not do the correct update to fix this problem. I also filed a complaint with you for same issue in May 2024 and received an email from Jason Winick. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
CV axles failed prematurely, at 20,000 miles. Wheels and steering column vibration at highway speeds.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated that on some occasions when the vehicle was started, there was an abnormal odor of overcharged battery in the cabin of the vehicle. The contact also stated on several occasions, the odor made his eyes swell with tears, especially in the hotter months of the year. The vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the failure could not be replicated; however, the mechanic observed the same odor of the overcharged battery. The dealer contacted the manufacturer and was advised that the odor was normal. The contact stated that manufacturer had stated that only two instances were reported and there would be no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 24,500.
Rear bed outlet stopped working at 30,000 miles.
Currently at mileage 11,200; was driving about 40 mph at 11:30 am in Folsom, CA; all of a sudden the truck slowed dramatically and I got several error messages: Power-train malfunction/Reduced power, engine service soon, and pre collision assistance not available." Was able to pull off the road safely, although several vehicles were right behind me. Had several recall repais within the last 3 months which involved software updates.
There are/were no warning lights or errors that popped up. When I am coming to a stop (last couple seconds of slowing) I will often feel like there is suddenly no brakes, then a harsh braking suddenly. There has not been an incident where this has resulted in an accident, but it makes me feel like I don't have control of the vehicle if I can't anticipate braking behavior on perfectly dry, smooth surfaces. This would be compounded if there were wet or otherwise slippery/rough conditions.
Rear Passenger Window failed to come back up after being opened. Diagnosed as Master Window Control. Seen several complains on Maverick Truck Forum similar to mine.
On 7/27/24 I was driving my 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid with approximately 17,500 miles on the New York State Thruway @ approximately 70 mph. All of a sudden without warning the vehicle lost propulsion power. All types of warning lights appeared on the dashboard and the vehicle slowed down to 35mph. I could not control the acceleration or speed of the vehicle with the gas pedal. The vehicle stayed at 35 mph unless I applied the brakes. I was able to exit the interstate several miles down the road and have the vehicle towed to the nearest Ford dealer. This vehicle malfunction caused an extremely dangerous situation as I was almost rear ended several times by vehicles approaching from the rear that were not aware of my lack of ability to keep up with the flow of traffic. Ford repaired the vehicle 3 days later. When I was at the dealer picking up the car I was informed this is a very common problem with the Hybrid model. This needs to be corrected before someone is killed because of this common malfunction.
Driving at approximately 65 miles per hour. Vehicle suddenly went into neutral I was forced to pull over on a busy highway. The dashboard was illuminated with several warning lights and messages. After one key cycle, I was only able to drive in a limited limp mode. After a second key cycle and waiting a few minutes, I was able to drive like normal but an engine light stayed illuminated.
Main infotainment screen keeps freezing, and can't reset or power off. Back up camera does not work during this time, creating a dangerous situation while I am doing constant pickup and drop offs.
There's a repeated issue for the backup camera. This happens around every other time I put the car in reverse, but for a few seconds only though. The backup camera often lags when reversing. This is a safety hazard when backing up if it's not real-time.
Upon starting vehicle and entering drive vehicle instrement cluster warnings went off and car applied emergancy brakes and suddenly stopped. upon vehicle restart driver was able to releace brakes and manually start ICE componant of hybrid drive train. vehicle entered drive mode and accelerated without touching gas pedal. brakes were jerky but responsive and vehicle accelerated by itself up to 35 mph while on way to dealer service. vehicle servace alerts given at time of drop off were: pre-collision malfunction Powertrain malfunction engine system fault
I have a 2023 For Maverick hybrid pickup. While driving on the highway at about 70-75 miles an hour, the engine abruptly shut off. I had to carefully make my way to the shoulder while cars zipped by. Scary and very unsafe. My wife was hysterical and does not want to ride in the truck anymore. Once stopped at shoulder, I turned the ignition to the off and on positions several times. The gas engine would not crank. Three or four messages scrolled on the screen: "Service engine immediately," "Pre-collision assist not available," and others I don't exactly remember. When I would turn the ignition to on, the electric engine would start but when I accelerated in Park, the gas engine did not accelerate, not did it work in Reverse, Neutral or Drive. I was able to limp off the highway about 30 miles and hour under what I presume was electric battery power with my hazard flashers on and park at a gas station. I had to have the truck towed to the dealer on a Saturday night at a cost of $400.00 and leave it for repairs. The Service Department told me the truck was not giving any error codes and they were trying to get further guidance from Ford. They required extensive driving and time to input and test Ford updates. The final result was that they were not able to verify any issues after performing additional PCM updates. I was advised they are all done and will deliver the truck tomorrow Wednesday. However, they still don't know what caused the power failure. I have seen numerous similar incidents being posted about on the Internet.
Found Drivers door hard to open and close. Took vehicle to Body shop. Had to replace door.
