NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Honda CR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while driving 35-40 MPH, the infotainment system became inoperable. The contact stated that infotainment system became operable after parking the vehicle in the driveway. Additionally, the contact stated while at a complete stop, she noticed that the engine was about to stall. The contact stated that upon depressing the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal simultaneously, and then releasing the brake pedal, she was able to drive. Several warning lights related to the brake system, the transmission, the fuel system, and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the DTC: P0172 was retrieved. The mechanic determined that the fuel system was running significantly rich, the PCM was malfunctioning, and that there was fuel dilution from the engine oil. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the fuel injectors needed to be replaced. The dealer charged a repair fee, but the contact declined to pay for the repair and advised the dealer to complete the recall repair. The dealer declined to complete the recall repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
The steering at highway speeds doesn't allow for small corrections. If you move the steering wheel slightly nothing happens , then it suddenly “grabs” causing overcorrection then , you get it back to center but then it “grabs” too much in the other direction. Taking the car to dealer tomorrow for inspection. Something wrong with the steering rack cpuld cause big problems.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel lost normal functionality and hesitated while turning. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the steering wheel was stiff and jerked while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the steering gearbox failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
The steering wheel began wiggling when driving straight. Then when I was completing a turn I began to audibly hear a clicking sound, followed by feeling a click when completing a turn. I took the vehicle into the Hardin Honda dealership to have the problem diagnosed. Upon assessment they were able to replicate the issue and determined the issue was that the steering gearbox needed to be replaced. There were no indications from the car’s operating system that anything wasn’t working correctly. It was upon my own assessment of having driven this vehicle for the last six years that I determined the steering experience was unusual.
Blown cylinder head gasket required replacement by dealership. Per the dealership, the car displayed failure codes P0302 and P0303. Dealership covered 80% of the cost as "good will" but also mentioned this is a "known issue." The Check Engine Light had displayed just prior to the gasket failure. A day prior my wife and son described the vehicle as "shaking" when the car started (likely related to the engine misfiring as indicated by the P0302 and P0303 error codes found by the dealer) Safety was at risk as wife was driving vehicle when the gasket failed - resulting in a loss of power to the engine and a potential risk for an accident in traffic. Luckily the problem happened less than a quarter mile away from our home and my wife was able to navigate traffic back to our home at a low rate of speed.
Over the past year, I have had an issue with the steering. I have brought the car into the dealership in addition to multiple independently owned mechanic shops to try to get answers. Currently, when turning to the right, to any degree, there is a popping/clicking noise. I have had the driver's side and passenger's side front CV axles replaced in addition to the right inner shaft (stub shaft) replaced without resolution. Additionally, there is a slight "sticking" in the steering wheel when I make fine adjustments to keep the car straight on the roadway, regardless of whether the road is straight or curved. No resolution from Honda as they continue to act as if this is normal even though the car has less than 60k miles.
I was preparing to turn around a curve when my steering wheel locked straight, causing my vehicle to collide with a concrete barrier. My vehicle was the only one involved, and collided with the barrier twice. This has led to several thousands in mechanical and body damages.

We bought a 2018 Honda CRV in 2021, certified pre-owned. About a year ago (2023), we started having steering issues. When the wheel is turned to the right, there's a creaking noise and palpable resistance (i.e. like the wheel is catching on something). This requires the driver to slightly force the wheel back to center. We informed the dealer about this problem one year ago, but they said they could not replicate the issue. It has gotten worse, and they replicated the problem this year and diagnosed it as "an internal problem with the power steering rack" - something related to the torque. We are surprised that this kind of failure would happen at under 100k miles. We are also disappointed that this part appears to be on an "indefinite back order," assumedly because this is a known recurrent issue that has depleted stock of the part. Our dealer has told us that this is a problem that will only get worse, and we are worried about unknown safety issues if we cannot control the steering.
When driving the vehicle. The steering will catch or stick when trying to steer the vehicle. This happens regularly.
I have received a recall notice related to the fuel pump (NHTSA #23V-858) and have been advised by Honda again today that the part required is still on back order until 2025. Is this vehicle safe to drive? If not, what remedy is available to me? It has been more than 60 days since I first inquired about the part.
The following has happened several times before a repair was made: [Car Alarm / Unable to turn on/off car.] Questions: *BCM failure. My car is available for inspection. *Unable to turn off/on vehicle, children inside. *Problem reproduced months earlier, and at dealership (Goodyear(920-458-8306) and Honda International(920-208-0200), both in Sheboygan, WI) *Warning lights and messages only appeared during the issue happening, not prior. Started [XXX] Car alarm goes off during inconsistent times. Then if I try to turn it on, I am unable to turn the car back off: dash lights flicker, relay is clicking several times. IF I am eventually able to turn it off, I can not turn it back on, though it does try to (engine). Same symptoms as above. Eventually it seems to possibly drain the battery, and all the dash lights and relay again flicker, But then the brake pedal pushes back at me when trying to turn it back on (with no engine sound). Battery, On/Off switch, and BCM were replaced to resolve(?) this issue. We will see if this continues. I am seeing MANY others online having the exact same problem. Side note: Touch Screen Infotainment screen went black months prior. pulling fuse and inserting it fixed that issue. Also, I have video, but am unable to upload here. At highway speeds, while steering wheel is centered, steering “sticks”, when turning to the right. It takes some effort to get it to go past this sticking point then feel a pop in the steering and it lets go. Just like the recall says, but this vehicle as well as many others are affected. Yet still no recall on them
Started having issues with steering rack about a year and a half ago. Steering would stick and make creaking noises. Brought it to my local Honda dealership last spring and they diagnosed it as needing steering rack replacement which would cost about $4,000. I reached out to Honda Corporate and they said the best they could do would to reduce the repair by $1,000. I told them I don’t think I should have to be responsible because 1) I didn’t to anything to cause it and 2) the CRV only had 75,000 miles on it. From going online I’m not the only one to have steering issues on this model. I really don’t feel that comfortable driving the vehicle and am reaching out to you to not only document this problem but also some advice as to how to move forward. As I was driving back from the aquarium with my family going home, the Automatic Emergency Braking System activated and the car suddenly came to a total stop abruptly - this is the third time the car does that since I have it (2020) there was nothing on the way that could have justified the car to stop in such a violent manner. Thankfully there was nobody behind me and we did not get hurt, but we were scared and my little daughter was crying thinking we did crash, of course now I don't feel safe driving my car because if this happens again in traffic someone will hit me in the back for sure.
Steering has developed a stickyness when attempting to make routine subtle adjustments to maintain lane on straight roads. This requires additional pressure on the steering wheel to make it turn. This then results in over-steering and potential lane departure. Dealer reports steering rack and pinion replacement needed. Single owner vehicle that has not been involved in any accidents. 2022 and newer C-RV have been recalled for this condition.

Steering has developed a click and constant correction to maintain a straight line. Alignment did not help. Vehicle will sometimes begin to track to the right or left on its own. I know that a few vehicles were recalled for this electric steering/rack problem, but, mine wasn't one. This is pretty serious and expensive to repair. My local mechanic quoted around $4000. Taking it the Honda dealer next week for their estimate and diagnosis. This condition is now fairly constant.
While driving the car, especially at higher speeds, the steering wheel begins to stick, making it difficult to stay in lane without jerking the wheel to correct for the sticking problem. The car was taken to Honda dealer, who confirmed that the problem is with the steering wheel box, which the dealer said needs to be replaced. We were advised that this is a defect that has been identified for other Honda CR-Vs from the same year, but that our specific VIN is not in the recall group yet. We have notified Honda headquarters that we have had this problem. We are awaiting a back-ordered new steering wheel box, which we are told could take months to arrive. We do not feel the car is safe to drive in the mean time and are using a loaner from the dealership.

While driving without any surrounding traffic I have experienced three instances where the collision warning system will be triggered and initiate emergency braking. At this time, I have not had any collisions. However, I have ensured after each incident that my collision settings were set to the lowest sensitivity to prevent such an occurrence. However, that has not been the case and I have not been able to receive any assistance from the dealership in relation to this matter.

Car has developed a sticky steering problem in the last 12 - 18 months ... seems to be getting worse and is more noticeable the longer you drive at highway speeds ... not sure what is going on but believe it to be a safety issue as it is definitely not normal plus uncomfortable to the point of concern
The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while making a turn, the vehicle independently stopped. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated, and the "BRAKE" message was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the vehicle functioned as intended. The contact stated that the phantom braking failure persisted. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, while driving over a bridge, the vehicle independently stopped suddenly with warning lights illuminated, and the "BRAKE" message was displayed. The vehicle resumed normal driving operation. Most recently, while driving over a speed bump, the vehicle independently stopped suddenly and then operated as intended. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, no cause for the failure was found. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

My 2018 honda crv electronic steering gearbox is faulty. I had honda dealership confirm the faulty part. The estimate is $3400 and on backorder. Explained to them there is a recall on this part for many Honda vehicles for exact problem. They said my vin number does not match for the recall. I contact honda of America, was issued a case number but they declined to assist in any to repair the faulty steering. I have researched via Google the many complaints on the and issue. A simple Google will pull up hundreds of same complaints. This is very dangerous as the steering sticks, intermittent locks, and car is very jerky, unsafe to drive. I'm second owner, 48k miles when purchased and now at 55k. I am asking to please have this looked into, issue a recall. I don't understand how some vehicles are covered and some are not. I understand vin may difference where or when manufacturing was complete, but my car has the same exact problem as so many other honda vehicles that are covered.
This car has not been in an accident and has been routinely maintained in accordance with Honda's recommended maintenance schedule. I went to turn on the car one day - nothing abnormal had happened - and I noticed that multiple (5+) warning lamps illuminated upon starting the car, including for the AWD system, power steering system, stability assist system, parking brake system, adaptive cruise control system, and others. This was on or around 1 June 2024; the car had approximately 25,000 miles on it at this time. The car appeared to drive normally. I took this to a dealership, which stated that their diagnostic computer had identified the fuel injectors on cylinders 2 and 3 as malfunctioning and running rich. I incurred approximately $2400 in replacement and repair costs at the dealership. My safety was not put at risk to my knowledge. The problem was reproduced and confirmed by a dealer. The vehicle and components were inspected by the dealership when diagnosing the problem; there were no manufacturer, police, or insurance representative inspections. The warning lamps were illuminated as above on approximately 1 June 2024.
A couple of months ago, I began to notice that the steering wheel would "click" as I turned left or right at an intersection. This began as a subtle jerk that was easy to overlook, or think to have been imagined. I travel significantly for work on the highway and began to notice that the steering wheel would slip and catch, even on long, gentle curves. When the frequency of these instances began to occur with alarming regularity, I took my 2018 Honda CRV to a Honda dealership. The service technicians confirmed the issue was the power steering rack sticking. I was informed that parts (gear box assembly, tie rods, boot set) would need to be ordered before repairs could be made. Technician also noted (see attachment) they'd found top strut mount popping and thumping. The vehicle issued no warming or messaging to alert to an impending issue. After 6 weeks, the parts are still not available (on backorder) for an undetermined amount of time. Current out of pocket cost, $3,427.51.
My steering wheel gets "sticky" at highway speeds. For instance: At 55 MPH I take a slight turn or curve to the left. The steering wheel does not return as it normally should. It seems stuck. It takes a definite firm pull back to the right. It has recently gotten worse. My dealer says there is nothing they can do other than a $4,500 repair. My wife is the main driver of this car and is very afraid the car is unsafe. My dealer said he called Honda to inquire about "goodwill assistance " for me. They told him due to the age and mileage there was nothing they can do. It is a 2018 Honda CRV - with 86k miles. Given the importance of steering I am afraid this car is unsafe to drive. We feel certain there should be a recall on such an important part. Thank you.
all warning signs come on at the same time on the dashboard. Car repair service explained that this is a known problem with CRV and suggested that I take it to he dealer. I have disconnected and reconnected the battery and this worked in discontinuing the warning signs but this was a temporary fix since same problem reappeared within weeks. This has reoccurred several times since 2024. Appointment has been made with dealer since the danger is whether warning sign is legitimate or just an electrical problem. This happens when car is first started and prior to initial drive. Does not prevent use of the car.
When turning, the steering wheel has a very loud creak and when driving, the steering wheel sticks. The Honda maintenance dept said there’s a recall on 2018 CRV’s for this exact problem due to a faulty steering gearbox but that my VIN # is not affected. The problem on my car has been confirmed by the Honda dealer. The maintenance supervisor at our Honda location stated there is also a recall on newer model Honda’s for the steering gearbox. Honda, as well as multiple independent mechanics, have stated that this issue can cause catastrophic injury or death. However, Honda Corporate has refused to offer assistance in fixing this issue and said the out of pocket cost to me will be $4300. There have been no warning signals about this issue and it started about 1 year ago. The car currently has only 62k miles. The original owner of the vehicle was my mother-in-law who leased it directly from the Honda dealer. She only put 18k miles on the car. We both have had it serviced according to Honda’s official maintenance schedule. This is a serious, known issue with active recalls that can cause a fatal accident and Honda refuses to expand their recall for public safety.
1. When steering to the left, the steering "sticks" and takes additional force to return the steering wheel to other positions. This happens only when steering to the left. 2. This led to inconsistent steering which caused the vehicle to wander from the desired direction. 3. The vehicle has not yet been to the dealer. Inquiry with the dealer shows that there are no recalls or safety bulletins for my VIN. I can reproduce the issue. 4. The vehicle has not been inspected as of yet. 5. There are no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms.
When driving at highway speeds the steering feels like it is sticking and requires a little effort to move the steering wheel. First noticed it about 2 weeks ago

With this report I am trying to PREVENT an incident from happening. I received the Honda recall notice dated May 2024 for my 2018 CR-V regarding an improperly molded impeller within the fuel pump module. Notice stated "An inoperable fuel pump could prevent an engine from starting, cause a vehicle to lose drive power, or stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash or injury". I contacted my dealer and was told there literally were no replacement parts anywhere in the United States and none would be available until sometime in the fall. However, if the vehicle should become inoperable (possibly while actually driving it) an order for the part could be requested. Is there any way Honda can be compelled to expedite this process? This is our only vehicle and we frequently need to drive on the very crowded interstate near the Phoenix area. We are hesitant to drive a vehicle we've been told by the dealer has an "increasing risk of a crash or injury".
