ON 9/3/2013 MY CAR WAS HIT IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT DISCONNECTED FROM THE DOOR PANEL WHICH LEFT ME UNPROTECTED. I EXPERIENCED SHOULDER PAIN AND WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR XRAYS NOTHING WAS BROKEN BUT IT TOOK ME A COUPLE OF WEEKS TO BE RELIEVED OF THE PAIN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE CRUISE CONTROL FAILED TO ENGAGE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CENTENNIAL HYUNDAI (LOCATED AT 6200 CENTENNIAL CENTER BLVD, LAS VEGAS, NV 89149, (702) 483-2200) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE CLOCKSPRING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 96,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.
I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN APRIL 2012. CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED ONLY BY BRANDON HYUNDAI SERVICE CENTER. LAST SERVICE WAS DONE ON 7/25/2014. ON AUGUST 31ST MY CAR CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. CAR WAS TOWED TO BRANDON HYUNDAI. ON SEPT 5, I RECEIVED A CALL FROM SERVICE DEPT SAYING DIAGNOSIS FOUND THE ENGINE WAS LOCKED UP. THEY COULDN'T TELL ME WHY BECAUSE IT HAD OIL AND NO LEAKS. IT WOULD HAVE TO BROKEN DOWN TO FIND OUT WHY ENGINE LOCKED UP WHICH WOULD COST ME $500-$600. ALSO, A USED ENGINE WOULD COST ME $6200. ON 9/15/14, I CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 12:27PM AND SPOKE TO ESPERANZE. I EXPLAINED TO HER MY SITUATION. SHE ADVISED ME TO CALL BACK WITH ID# AND SPEAK TO A CASE MANAGER. AT 12:29PM, I CALLED BACK AND SPOKE TO CASE MGR MARIATTA. SHE STATED SHE COULD DO NOTHING FOR ME AND REFERRED ME BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE DIAGNOSIS DONE. I EXPLAINED TO HER THAT I DIDN'T HAVE $600 TO PAY FOR DIAGNOSIS. CASE#6878995. SHE STATED THAT MAYBE DEALERSHIP COULD HELP ME WITH SOME ARRANGEMENTS SINCE WARRANTY RECENTLY EXPIRED AND TOLD ME TO HAVE A GOOD DAY. I AM CURRENTLY DRIVING A LOANER CAR. I NEED HYUNDAI TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND PLEASE GET MY CAR REPAIRED OR ANOTHER CAR. THANKS SO MUCH! *TR
STARTED ENGINE IN ORDER TO PULL OUT OF PARKING SPACE. ALL RED LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD LIT UP, AC FAILED TO START BLOWING COLD AIR, "PARK (P)" LIT ALTHOUGH GEAR WAS IN "DRIVE (D)" MODE. IMMEDIATELY TURNED ENGINE OFF. REPEATED PROCEDURE FOR TWO MORE TIMES. EVENTUALLY AC KICKED IN, "D" LIT UP AND ALL BUT AIR BAG LIGHT WENT OFF. PASSENGERS SEAT BELT LIGHT KEPT AND KEEPS FLASHING CONTINUOUSLY AND DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON. CALLED DEALER FROM WHERE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AND WAS TOLD REPAIR SHOULD FALL UNDER WARRANTY AND ANY DEALER CAN TAKE CARE OF MY ISSUE. STOPPED BY AT DEALERSHIP CLOSE TO HOME AND WAS TOLD THAT DIAGNOSTIC TEST NEEDS TO BE PERFORMED TO DETERMINE IF THIS REPAIR WILL FALL UNDER WARRANTY. SECOND DEALERSHIP REQUESTED THAT I LEAVE THE CAR WITH THEM AN ENTIRE DAY FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, WHICH WILL COST ME ABOUT $90 (+) IN ORDER TO DETERMINE IF THIS IS A WARRANTY ISSUE OR NOT. *JB
2011 HYUNDAI SONATA TURBO--WHEN DRIVING, THE FRONT END PULLS TO THE RIGHT. I AM REPLACING TIRES YEARLY. THE SHOP SAYS THEY CAN'T FIND ANY PROBLEMS, TURBO WHEN APPLIED SMELLS LIKE BURNING RUBBER. *TR
I GOT INTO VEHICLE TO GO TO WORK & IT FAILED TO START. ILLUMINATION LIGHT KEPT BLINKING TELLING ME TO PUSH IN BRAKES, BUT I WAS PUSHING IN BRAKE PEDDLE. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR USED, 35 DAYS AGO, HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES UNTIL TODAY. CONTACTED HYUNDAI DEALER TO FIND OUT THAT I AM NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, BECAUSE I AM NOT HE ORIGINAL OWNER. WHICH I WAS TOLD VEHICLE WAS COVERED UNTIL 100,000 MILES FROM USED DEALER. HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TO GET VEHICLE INSPECTED & KEEPING FINGERS CROSSED THAT THE ISSUE HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH ONE OF THE MANY RECENT RECALLS. *TT
WHILE DRIVING MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA (APPROX 45,000 MILES) DOWN THE HIGHWAY THE RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT POPPED OFF AND WAS HANGING. AFTER LOOKING IN THE TRUNK AT THE INSIDE TAIL LIGHT AREA, I SAW PLASTIC PIECES AROUND THE SCREWS THAT WERE CRACKED AND BROKEN OFF; THUS CAUSING THE TAIL LIGHT TO POP OFF AND HANG. I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT THE TAIL LIGHT DID NOT FALL OFF THE CAR COMPLETELY AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I THEN DICOVERED THAT THE LEFT REAR TAIL LIGHT STUDS WERE BEGINNING TO BREAK OFF TOO AND DO THE SAME THING. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY CLAIMED THE CLIPS BROKE BUT IT LOOKED FORCED AND WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. UNDERSTAND THIS CAR WAS NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND I AM A STAY AT HOME MOM WHO HAS A GARAGE FOR THE CAR. I WAS SIMPLYING DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE TAIL LIGHT POPPED OFF. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME AND OTHERS.
IN THE WINTER ONCE, CAR WOULDN'T START AND IT TOOK A FEW MINUTES TO GET IT STARTED. I BROUGHT IT IN AND THEY SAID IT WAS FINE. IN APRIL IT STARTED MAKING A TERRIBLE NOISE WHILE IDLING AND ACCELERATING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY CHANGED THE OIL AND THE NOISE WENT AWAY FOR A COUPLE MONTHS. NOISE CAME BACK AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. NOW THEY ARE STATING THERE IS SLUDGE IN THE ENGINE AND UNLESS I HAVE PROOF OF ALL MY OIL CHANGES THEY ARE NOT GOING TO HONOR MY WARRANTY. I HAVE CHANGED THE OIL EVERY 3500-6,000 MILES RELIGIOUSLY. I AM NOT SURE HOW THE ENGINE FAILS AT 50,000. I PURCHASED THIS CAR SPECIFICALLY FOR THE WARRANTY AND NOW THEY ARE BACKING OUT. *TR
REAR TAIL LIGHT ON DRIVERS SIDE FOR NO REASON BROKE OFF FROM THE CAR. THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT , NO DAMAGE OR EVIDENCE OF SOMEONE HITTING IT. LOOKS LIKE THE PART OF THE LIGHT HOLDING IT TO THE CAR JUST BROKE OFF FOR NO REASON. DEALER SAID NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. *TT
THIS VEHICLE IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE IN A STRAIGHT LINE. VEHICLE IS CONSTANTLY PULLING TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT AND REQUIRES CONSTANT ATTENTION. IT IS ALMOST AS IF STEERING WHEEL HAS NOT BEEN CENTERED. I THOUGHT THAT THIS PROBLEM IS WITH MY VEHICLE, BUT AFTER DRIVING MY FRIENDS BRAND NEW SONATA I CONCLUDED THAT THIS IS THE HYUNDAI PROBLEM. DEALER IS DENYING THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR; HOWEVER PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. *TR
CAR WOULD NOT START WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE AND START BUTTON. TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AND NOTHING. BRAKE WAS VERY HARD AND AFTER 10 MINUTES I GAVE UP AND DROVE MY TRUCK. THIS IS ABOUT THE 4TH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. I WILL TAKE TO DEALER. FROM READING THE BLOGS SOUNDS LIKE THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. *TR
I ENJOY THE CAR BUT THE LOW HEAD LIGHT BEAMS ARE DANGEROUSLY POOR. I HAVE REPLACED THE BULBS AND HAVE HAD THE DEALERSHIP RAISE THEM TO THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL. THEY STILL DO NOT REACH OUT 10 FEET PAST THE HOOD AND AS SPEED INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT BECOMES LESS. I MAINLY HAVE TO DRIVE ON HIGH BEAMS OR TAKE ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN WE GO OUT AT NIGHT. IS THERE ANY RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. THERE ARE MANY BLOGS ON THIS AND WE NEED HELP FROM THIS AGENCY TO PREVENT HYUNDAI FROM SELLING MORE CARS WITH INFERIOR LIGHTING. *TT
WHILE TRAVELING, THE CAR SUDDENLY STOP IN TRAFFIC. WE HAD TO MOVE TO A SAFE POINT. CAR EVENTUALLY WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER. THEY PINPOINTED THE PROBLEM AS THE FUEL PUMP. TOLD US NO GAS IN THE CAR, NOT SO, GAS WAS NEARLY FULL. CALLED AND TOLD US CAR WAS READY TO BE PICKED UP. WENT TO DEALER, TOLD TO PUT GAS IN CAR. NOTICE FUEL GUAGE NOT WORKING AND FULL PANEL WAS BLINKING. DROVED ABOUT 1/2 MILE TO CLOSEST GAS STATION, GOT GAS, HEADED BACK TO GET RENTAL CAR AT DEALER, CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED AGAIN. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR NEARLY A MONTHLY. FINALLY HAD CAR TOWED TO ANOTHER DEALER, AND BEHOLD, THIS TIME, SAID, IT WAS AN ELETRICAL PROBLEM AND WANTED $2600 TO REPAIR, SAID NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. MANUFACTURER GOT INVOLVED AND AGREED TO REPAIR AT THEIR EXPENSES. TALKED WITH ANOTHER OWNER OF SAME MODEL AND YEAR, SHE TOO IS EXPERIENCING SUDDEN STOPS. MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEMS, AND IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED, AND THIS TIME MAKING SURE THAT SOME KIND OF COMPENSATION FOR RENTAL IS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.
WHILE DRIVING TO WORK MY INSTRUMENT PANEL AND GAUGES STARTED FLASHING, MY SPEEDOMETER AND RPM ODOMETER WOULD "JUMP" FROM 0 RPM AND 0 MPH TO 2500 RPM AND 70 MPH "BOUNCING" BETWEEN THOSE READINGS. THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON THE STOP LAMP SO I TOOK MY CAR IN TO GET THIS REPLACED EXPLAINING WHAT MY CAR AS DOING. THE HYUNDAI DEALER "CONFIRMED" THAT THIS ISSUE WAS THE CAUSE. AFTER HAVING THE STOP LAMP REPLACED IT DID NOT DO IT AGAIN FOR A FEW MONTHS. ON 10/29/2013, 10/30/2013 AND 11/01/2013 IT BEGAN TO DO THE EXACT SAME THING. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK IN THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC COSTING ME $100 DOLLARS, WHICH THEY THEN "INFORMED" ME THAT IT WAS THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. SO I SPENT $1377 TO REPLACE IT (OF COURSE I WAS 2,000 MILES OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY AT THIS POINT AS MY HUSBAND DID NOT THINK IT NECESSARY TO GET THE EXTENDED ONE WHEN WE PURCHASED IT), I FINALLY GOT MY CAR BACK ON WEDNESDAY 11/13/2013 AND IT SEEMED FINE UNTIL TODAY 11/17/2013 WHEN IT STARTED DOING IT AGAIN. NOT ONLY DID I HAVE TO DEAL WITH A COMPLETE LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM FROM THE DEALERSHIP BUT MY CAR IS STILL NOT FIXED. *TR

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE BRAKE MALFUNCTION. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED APPROXIMATELY 15 TIMES DURING THE 24 MONTHS HIS WIFE OWNED THE LEASED VEHICLE, WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES, MOSTLY AT LOW SPEEDS AND ONCE IN REVERSE, SHE EXPERIENCED A FIRM PEDAL RESISTANCE, BUT NO FUNCTIONAL BRAKING FOR SEVERAL SECONDS.
CAR STOPPED SEVERAL TIMES DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING, CAUSING DRIVER UNNECESSARY STRESS THAT SHE WOULD BE INVOLVED IN DEADLY ACCIDENT. HAD TO MOVE TO SHOULDER AREA DURING RUSHHOUR TRAFFIC SEVERAL TIMES, IN THE DC AREA. MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO GET ISSUES ADDRESSED WITH DEALERSHIPS IN DC/MD. TOLD MANY REASONS WHY THE SUDDEN STOPS. HAD TO PAY OFF OF POCKET FOR RENTAL, NEVER ADDRESSED TO SATISFACTION OF OWNER. MAJOR, MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH SUDDEN STOPS WITHOUT ANY WARNINGS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 13V113000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING , SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). AFTER THE REPAIRS, THE VEHICLE WOULD SPORADICALLY FAIL TO START. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
THE CARS IGNITION KEY DOES NOT RELEASE FROM THE IGNITION FOR UP TO 6 HOURS. THE IGNITION CYLINDER WAS CHANGED BY HYUNDAI BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUED TO HAPPEN EVEN WITH THE CHANGE OF THE KEYS AND THE CYLINDER. ALSO, THE ENGINE SEIZES WHEN I TOOK MY SON AND HIS GIRLFRIEND TO THE AIRPORT. HYUNDAI DID NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY AND CHARGED ME $3600.00 FOR A NEW ENGINE. THEIR 10 YEAR WARRANTY IS A FRAUD. I HAD TO PAY FOR THE KEY CHANGE WHICH DID NOT WORK. *TR
I TOOK ONE OF MY TWO 2011 SONATAS TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN WOODBRIDGE VIRGINIA BECAUSE THE RIGHT TAIL LENS WAS COMPLETELY BROKEN AND HANGING OFF THE CAR. THE BOLTS HOLDING THE TAIL LENS TO THE BODY WERE STILL IN THE BODY WITH THE PLASTIC THREAD PORTION OF THE LENS. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE WARRANTY BECAUSE THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF MARKS ON THE CAR THAT WOULD INDICATE THE FORCE REQUIRED TO BREAK A TAIL LENS. I BELIEVE THE LENS WERE INSTALLED IMPROPERLY AND THE STRESS FINALLY CAUSED THE PLASTIC TO BREAK. TO MY SURPRISE I GOT A CALL FROM THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SAYING THE LEFT LENS WAS BROKEN AS WELL. SHE SAID THEY BELIEVE SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO STEAL THE LENS. SHE SAID THERE IS A SMALL MARK NEAR ONE OF THE LENS. I DID NOT NOTICE THE MARK WHEN I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE. HOWEVER, IF IT WAS SO SMALL FOR ME TO NOTICE THERE IS NO WAY SOMEONE COULD HAVE ATTEMPTED TO PRY OFF THE LENS WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO BEAK 4 LARGE BOLTS WITHOUT LEAVING A HIGHLY NOTICEABLE MARK (S) ON THE CAR. THE MARKS SHE IS REFERRING COULD HAVE BEEN FROM MY ATTEMPT TO PUSH THE LENS BACK INTO THE HOUSING SO THAT I COULD DRIVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I NOTICED I AM THE 14TH PERSON TO REPORT THIS TO YOUR AGENCY. MY CONCERNS ARE: 1. I PAID OVER 400.00 TO REPAIR WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A WARRANTY REPAIR AND 2. I HAVE ANOTHER 2011 SONATA AND I HAVE LIABILITY CONCERNS SHOULD THE SECOND CAR EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUE. IF A TAIL LENS WEIGHING A POUND OR TWO FLIES OFF INTO A CAR FOLLOWING ME AT 50 OR 60 MILES AN HOUR AND THE DRIVER BEHIND ME REACTS HE OR SHE COULD END UP GETTING HURT OR KILLED. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS. I KEPT ALL THE PARTS I HAVE PICTURES OF THE NEW LENS INSTALLED AND THE OLD LENS THAT ARE BROKEN. I WILL EVEN MAIL ONE OF THE DAMAGE ONES TO YOU TO INSPECT AT MY COST. *TR
IN A PARKING LOT I FOUND MY 2011 SONATA WITH THE RIGHT TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY COMPLETELY BROKEN AND HANGING BY THE ELECTRICAL WIRES. THE THREADED PORTION OF THE ASSEMBLY HAD BROKEN OFF AND WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE ASSEMBLY TO THE BODY OF THE CAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE A WARRANTY REPAIR. I RECIEVED A CALL FROM THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SAYING THAT BOTH TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLIES WERE BROKEN. SHE BELIEVED THAT SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO STEAL THE ASSSEMBLYS. SHE SAID THERE IS A SMALL MARK NEAR ONE OF THE LENS. THIS IS SOMETHING I FAILED TO NOTICE AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE CLOSELY. I HAD THEM PUT BOTH LENSES ON BECAUSE THE CAR WAS DUE FOR A STATE INSPECTION. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SHOWED ME THE MARKS SHE BELIEVED WERE CAUSED BY SOMEONE ATTEMPTING TO PRY THE LENSES OFF THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE TWO SMALL HAIR LINE SCRATCHES ON THE PAINT. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE BROKEN OFF BOLTS. I TOLD THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT SCRATCHES WERE MOST LIKELY CAUSED WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO PUSH THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY BACK INTO PLACE. I TOLD HER THAT THE FORCE NEEDED TO BREAK THE FOUR BOLTS OUT OF THE ASSEMBLY WOULD CAUSE MUCH MORE DAMAGE TO THE CAR AND THAN TWO SMALL HAIR LINE SCRATCHES ON THE PAINT. ANYONE ATTEMPTING TO STEAL A TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY IN THIS MANNER KNOWS IT WOULD RENDER THE PART UNUSABLE. THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLIES WERE INSTALLED IMPROPERLY AT THE FACTORY OR THE PART ITSELF IS DEFECTIVE. I NOTICED FROM THE NHTSA WEBSITE THAT I AM THE 14TH PERSON TO DOCUMENT THIS PROBLEM. MY CONCERN IS I OWN TWO OF THESE CARS AND IF THE SAME THING HAPPENS WITH THE SECOND SONATA THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY COULD BREAK OFF AND HIT A CAR BEHIND ME. THIS COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 31,000. ...UPDATED 08-08-13 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE BEARING IN THE FRONT WHEEL, JOINT ASSEMBLY, BEARING BRACKET, ARM CONTROL UNIT AND KNUCKLE TO THE FRONT AXLE, WERE ALL REPLACED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATIONS OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 14V434000 (POWER TRAIN), 15V568000 (ENGINE), AND 15V759000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE PARTS TO DO THE RECALL REPAIRS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT AWARE OF THE ISSUE. DEAR SIR/MADAM, I'M CONTACTING YOU TO REPORT WHAT I STRONGLY BELIEVE IS A DEFECT IN THE STEERING UNIT OF HYUNDAI SONATA, 2011. IN AN ARTICLE THAT WAS PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER 2010 AT YAHOO NEWS, A RECALL PROBLEM OF THE SONATA WAS REPORTED AFTER "COMPLAINTS HAVE COME IN ABOUT FEELING LOOSENESS WHILE DRIVING OR ABNORMAL SOUNDS COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMNS." THE NOISE BECOMES MOST OBVIOUS AND LOUDEST WHEN I DRIVE SLOWLY ON BRICK ROADS. 3) THE PROBLEM BECOMES MOST DANGEROUS WHEN I DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY. AS I SLOW DOWN TO TAKE AN EXIT, THE STEERING WHEEL GOES VICIOUSLY VIBRATING, MAKING IT HARD TO CONTROL OR KEEP STABLE. THIS VIBRATION IS ASSOCIATED WITH A LOUD RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER AND TALKED TO HYUNDAI USA, BOTH PARTIES DISTANCED THE PROBLEM FROM CAMPAIGN 97 (A STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT RECALL). THE DEALER SAYS THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN ON MY EXPENSES. IF THE DEALER IS RIGHT THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT RELATED TO THE RECALL, THEN IT IS A NEW PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND INVESTIGATED. PLEASE TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT THE SAFETY OF HYUNDAI SONATA DRIVERS COULD BE ENDANGERED BY THIS PROBLEM IF NOT FIXED. I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON REGARDING THIS MATTER. *TR
MY CAR COMES WITH A TPMS SYSTEM TO MONITOR THE AIR PRESSURE IN EACH TIRE. INTERMITTENTLY THE WARNING LIGHT INDICATING THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH ONE OF THE TIRES COMES ON. A CHECK WITH A PRESSURE GAUGE OF EACH TIRE ALWAYS INDICATES A FALSE ALARM. TALKING WITH OTHER SONATA OWNERS I HAVE ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. WHEN BRINGING THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER THEY SAY THEY CAN'T FIX IT BECAUSE THERE'S NO ISSUE WHEN THE CAR IS AT THEIR GARAGE. THIS CAN BE A DANGEROUS PROBLEM FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS - 1. THE FALSE ALARM IS DISTRACTING, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS CAN CAUSE THE OPERATOR TO THINK THEY SHOULD PULL OVER IN A DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT TO AVOID HAVING A BIGGER PROBLEM. 2. AFTER IT HAPPENS A COUPLE OF TIMES THE OPERATOR MIGHT IGNORE A REAL PROBLEM. YET THE MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS DRIVING IN TOWN @ SLOW SPEED, & PUT ON BRAKES TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN/CROSS WALK. I BEGAN TO BRAKE A CAR & HALF LENGTH FROM THE CROSS WALK. THE CAR DID NOT STOP & I FELT IT PULL FORWARD, FELT A VIBRATION IN THE BRAKE PEDDLE & HEAR THE MOTOR MAKING A LOW REVVING OR WHINING SOUND. THE CAR WENT THROUGH THE CROSS WALK & INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. AT THAT POINT I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE & DROVE ON UNTIL I FOUND A PLACE TO PULL OVER. THE BRAKES WERE FINE WHEN I STOPPED THE CAR AT THE PARKING SPOT. I LEFT THE CAR RUNNING & CALLED MY HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM & EXPLAINED THAT I WAS ALARMED BY THIS. THE GUY TOLD ME IT WAS PROBABLY MY ABS BRAKES KICKING IN AS IT WAS RAINING. I HAVE DRIVEN CARS FOR YEARS WITH ABS BRAKES & HAD THEM KICK IN & THIS DID NOT FEEL THE SAME. THIS FELT LIKE MY CAR WAS PULLING FORWARD RATHER THAN ABS BRAKES ACTIVATING. I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDDLE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE LAST 5 MONTHS. BUT I DON'T HAVE THE DATE OF THAT INCIDENT. BOTH TIMES I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS TOLD TO KEEP DRIVING THE CAR TODAY & IF IT DOES IT AGAIN TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT AS THEY HAVE HAD SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS BRAKES. I AM GOING ON VACATION IN A COUPLE OF DAYS & THE DEALERSHIP IS 50 MILES AWAY, SO I CAN'T JUST STOP BY WHEN THIS HAPPENS. MY CONCERN, WHICH I EXPRESSED TO THE DEALERSHIP, IS THAT IF SOMEONE HAD BEEN IN THE CROSS WALK I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM AS I HAD NO WAY TO STOP THE CAR AND IT WAS PULLING FORWARD. OR IF I CAR HAD BEEN COMING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, I WOULD HAVE BEEN HIT AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MY FAULT. I AM LESS THAN 3000 FROM MY WARRANTY BEING UP AND TOLD THE DEALERSHIP TO MAKE A NOTE OF THIS AS A PROBLEM AT THIS POINT. I SEE WHERE THERE ARE OTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. PAINT STARTED PEELING AROUND TOP OF WINDSHIELD AND STARTING TO SHOW SIGNS OF RUSTING. THERE SHOULDN'T BE ANY REASON THAT THE PAINT SHOULD BE PEELING BACK TO THE METAL AFTER ONLY 2 YEARS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY THE BACK DRIVERS SIDE TAIL LIGHT FLEW OFF THE CAR AND INTO TRAFFIC. I WAS ABLE TO RETRIEVE THE TAILLIGHT AND THE PLASTIC HOLDING ALL 4 BOLTS IN PLACE WERE BROKEN. I READ ONLINE AND THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER INCIDENTS OF THIS SO I FEEL I NEEDED TO REPORT IT TO PREVENT ANY ACCIDENTS IN THE FUTURE. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING THE VEHICLE ROLLED AWAY ON ITS OWN AND CRASHED THROUGH THE GARAGE WALL INTO THE KITCHEN OF HIS HOME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000. *TR

MY FIANCE' WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON THE HIGHWAY AND IT JUST STARTED TO PUTTER AND STARTED TO MAKE KNOCKING NOISES AND COULD NO LONGER BE DRIVEN. HE PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WE HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE (ON MY RELATIVELY NEW CARE THAT I, THE ORIGINAL OWNER HAD FOR JUST OVER 2 YEARS). THEY CLAIMED THAT MY ENGINE WAS DIRTY AND NON-LUBRICATED. I KEPT UP WITH MY OIL CHANGES AND AS A MATTER OF FACT, JUST HAD THE OIL CHANGED (NOT BY HYUNDAI) ABOUT A WEEK PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. SINCE I HAD THE ENGINE REPLACED WITH A USED ENGINE (ABOUT $5500), THE CAR HAS SEIZED ON ME THREE OTHER TIMES. I JUST FOUND OUT THAT BECAUSE I HAD A USED ENGINE PUT IN BY A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, I AM NOT COVERED UNDER THE 10 YR/100,000 MILE WARRANTY. THIS CAR HAS BEEN A TOTAL NIGHTMARE, REPAIR AFTER REPAIR FOR WHICH I HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR. HYUNDAI HAS "BRANDED" MY CAR, WHICH IS A REAL CRACK UP CONSIDERING ITS A FAULTY CAR THAT THEY SOLD ME.
WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING IN PARK, THE STEERING WHEEL EVERYTIME WHEN TURNED OR ROCKED IN A RIGHT TO LEFT MOTION, A CLUNKING LOOSE SOUND WILL BE FELT AND HEARD. *TR
WE PURCHASED A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA IN 2011. IN JUNE OF 2013 MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WHEN FOR NO APPARENT REASON THE SUNROOF SHATTERED. I CALLED THE DEALER BUT WAS TOLD THAT THE WARRANTY DID NOT APPLY TO THAT SITUATION AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT MY INSURANCE COMPANY. WE HAD A $500 DEDUCTIBLE COMPREHENSIVE POLICY. WE PAID THE $500 AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY PICKED UP THE BALANCE. TODAY, I READ AN ARTICLE IN THE CONSUMER REPORT MAGAZINE THAT RELATED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM SO I THOUGHT I WOULD REPORT THIS INCIDENT. THERE IS VERY LOAD ROAD NOISE. IT IS EXCESSIVE AND GETS WORSE OVER 45 MPH. I HAVE HAD NEW TIRES, ALIGNMENTS, BALANCING TO NO AVAIL. IN ADDITION, THERE IS A CLICKING NOISE WHEN BACKING UP WITH A SHARP TURN BOTH TURNING LEFT AND TURNING RIGHT.
TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM INDICATOR LIGHT HAS COME ON EVERY TIME WE TRAVEL OVER 300 MILES. I HAVE TAKEN INTO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT IS COMMON. I THINK IT IS SAFETY CONCERNED. HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A LOW TIRE OR NOT WHEN I'VE CHECK THEN AND EVERYTHING IS OK. *TR

WHENEVER I MAKE A TURN THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES A CLICKING NOISE. I WAST OLD THAT IT COULD BE THE FLEX COUPLING IN THE STEERING COLUMN AND THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAS TAKEN THEIR CARS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM TO THE DEALERSHIPS TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. MY VEHICLE HAS HAD AN ALIGNMENT DONE FOUR TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR, FIRST TWO BY PEPBOYS AND LAST TWO FROM HYUNDAI BUT THE CAR CONTINUES TO PULL TO THE LEFT ON HIGHWAY. THE CURRENT (THIRD SET) OF NEW TIRES, HANKOOK 727'S, HAVE APX. 20K MILES AND HAVE STARTED TO WEAR THE REAR TIRES IN THE SAME (CUPPING) PATTERN. THE DEALER WAS MADE AWARE OF THIS YEARS AGO DURING A MAINTENANCE VISIT. HE SUGGESTED REPLACING THE TIRES AND ROTATING THEM EVERY 5K MILES. THIS SUGGESTION IS NOT A SATISFACTORY FIX. OUTSIDE OF THIS PROBLEM THE CAR IS PERFECT. HOWEVER, REPLACING TIRES BEFORE THEY'RE WORN OUT IS TOO EXPENSIVE. TIRE REPLACEMENT OFF-SETS THE FUEL EFFICIENCY RATING THAT PROMPTED THE PURCHASE OF THIS CAR! NOT ONE OF THE 3 SETS OF TIRES ON THIS CAR GOT CLOSE TO THE MANUFACTURERS MILEAGE RATING! A NEW SET OF TIRES MOUNTED AND BALANCED IS MORE THAN $1,000.00. GIVEN THE COST OF TIRES, THIS CAR IS MORE EXPENSIVE TO OPERATE THAN MY OTHER CAR, A V8 PERFORMANCE SEDAN WHICH AVERAGES 19MPG. I'M NOT HAPPY WITH THE TIRE WEAR SITUATION AND I'M CONSIDERING A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. THERE WAS A RE-CALL TO REPLACE THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARMS WHICH DIDN'T HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER MORE THAN THREE TIMES AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPLICATE AND DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SECOND DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSTIC TESTING TO DETERMINE THE FAILURE AND THEY INDICATED THAT THE RECALL REPAIR FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V568000 (ENGINE) DID NOT NEED TO BE COMPLETED. THE SECOND DEALER DID NOT COMPLETE THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES AND PROVIDED NO REMEDY. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000.
I OWN A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. I HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE BACK TO HYUNDAI IN KILLEEN TO HAVE THE ALIGNMENT REPAIRED TWO TIMES. WHEN I INITIALLY RECEIVED THE CAR IT PULL VERY HARD TO THE LEFT, THEN ONCE THEY "FIXED IT" IT STILL PULLED. I PAID INITIALLY TO HAVE THE CAR CERTIFIED AND ALIGNMENT IT PART OF IT. *TR
I LEASED THIS HYUNDAI SONATA IN 2011 BRAND NEW AND AFTER 3000 MILES BEGAN HAVING ISSUES WITH THE CAR NOT STARTING BY USING THE START BUTTON. THE WORKAROUND WAS TO PLACE YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND HOLD DOWN THE PUSH BUTTON START FOR 1 MINUTE AND THE ENGINE WOULD START. THIS WAS INTERMITTENT. IT WOULD HAPPEN FREQUENTLY AND THEN SUDDENLY BE BETTER FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. FINALLY AT 18000 MILES WENT TO START THE CAR AND EVERYTHING WAS DEAD. IT DROVE OK THE DAY BEFORE (NOT LIKE A CAR WHO'S BATTERY WAS BAD). THE CAR IS BEING TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAPPENED TO PURCHASE IT. IN ADDITION TO THE START ISSUE AND THE COMPLETELY DYING PART (AND IT WAS NOT ABLE TO BE CHARGED BY ORDINARY MEANS) THE CAR ALSO HAS A LOW TIRE PRESSURE WARNING THAT STAYS ON REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH OR HOW LITTLE AIR IS IN THE TIRE. THAT REMAINED FOR 4 MONTHS AND NOW SEEMS TO BE STAYING OFF. THE CAR ALSO DRIFTS TO THE LEFT WHEN DRIVEN (IT HAS DONE THIS SINCE I PURCHASED IT). I HAD SEVERAL RECALLS FIXED EARLY ON AT THE DEALERSHIP, BUT IT DID NOT CORRECT THE DRIFTING ISSUE. THERE IS ALSO A RATTLE IN THE DASH WHICH BEGAN AT 16,000 MILES. THE BACK DOOR HANDLE (BEHIND THE DRIVER'S SEAT) HANDLE WAS STUCK IN AN OUTWARD POSITION AND THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN. IT FINALLY OPENED ONE DAY AND NOW THE HANDLE IS BACK IN PLACE, BUT A SMALL BLACK PIECE HANGS DOWN FROM THE HANDLE. I HAVE READ ON THE INTERNET SEVERAL COMPLAINTS THAT ARE THE SAME OR SIMILAR AS ALL OF MY ISSUES. *TR
THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH PROXIMITY KEY SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START EVEN WITH THE KEY IN THE VEHICLE, WE TIRED TO USE BOTH KEYS, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE EITHER KEY. LIGHTS ILLUMINATED IN THE DASH, ENGINE LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT (CAR NOT RUNNING) OTHER LIGHTS LIT IN GEAR SHIFTER AND STILL NO CONNECTION. WE COULD NOT OPEN THE TRUNK THERE IS NO KEY SLOT AND THE KEY FOB TRUNK BUTTON WOULD NOT UNLOCK TRUNK. CAR WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER. NOTE: THIS IS THE SECOND TIME OUR VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. JANUARY 2013 SAME PROBLEM WHERE WE NEEDED A TOW TO THE DEALERSHIP. SAME PROBLEM 4 MONTHS APART. *TR
ON 4/14/2013 AND AGAIN THIS MORNING 05/28/2013, MY VEHICLE FAILS TO START. THE ENGINE DOES TURN OVER SO THIS IS NOT COMPLETELY DEAD LIKE OTHER REPORTS. BOTH LAST TIME AND THIS TIME THE SITUATION IS THE SAME: 1 TAKE THE CAR FOR A SHORT DRIVE (~1 MILE) 2 PARK ON AN INCLINE IN MY DRIVEWAY. 3 A FEW HOURS LATER, GET IN CAR, PUSH THE START AND THE ENGINE JUST TURNS OVER - DOES NOT START. THE FIRST TIME, I TRIED TO START THE CAR UNTIL THE BATTERY DIED - I THEN CALLED HYUNDAI AND THEY SENT A ROADSIDE SERVICE PERSON. HE JUMPED THE CAR AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. VERY FRUSTRATING. I ASSUMED IT WAS BAD GAS AND THAT MY TANK WAS VERY LOW (RED LAMP WAS ON FOR LOW FUEL) ALSO NOTE: CAR WAS ON A FLAT SERVICE AT THIS POINT. SO TODAY: I CALLED HYUNDAI DEALER 45 MINUTES AGO, AND AM WAITING ON A CALLBACK FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. IM SURE JUST TO HAVE ME GET ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AGAIN. *TR
WHEN DRIVING TO WORK I HAD JUST GOTTEN ON HIGHWAY WHEN I FELT A THUD AND TRANSMISSION JERKED. I FIRST THOUGHT THAT I HIT SOMETHING ON THE ROAD BUT HADN'T. I NOTICED MY SPEED WAS REDUCED TO 55MPH AND THE RPM,S INCREASED TO 3500 FROM THE PREVIOUS 2000 RPM.I HAD HAD THIS PROBLEM TWICE NOW AND READ ONLINE THAT BY PULLING OVER TO A STOP AND SHUT OFF THE IGNITION WILL RESET THE TRANSMISSION ELECTRICAL CONTROLS.I WITHOUT DOING THIS THE TRANS. WILL REMAIN IN WHATS CALLED LIMP GEAR(4TH) AND WILL REMAIN IN THAT GEAR AT ALL SPEEDS UNTILL YOU SHUT OFF THE IGNITION AND IT WILL THEN RESET HOPEFULLY.I AM SCHEDULED TO HAVE THE DEALER LOOK INTO THIS AND HOPEFULLY CAN COME UP WITH A FIX, AS THIS IS THE 2ND TIME I WILL HAVE THE VEHICLE IN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM.THE ONLY BAD THING ABOUT DIAGONALIZING THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN THE FACT THAT NO CHECK ENGINE CODE LIGHT IS ON THE DASH AND I WAS TOLD THE FIRST TIME THAT WITHOUT THIS AND THE FACT THAT BY DRIVING IT AND DUPLICATE THE OCCURRENCE THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO FIX.
I PURCHASED/ PICKED UP MY CERTIFIED 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA ON 4/4/13. ON 4/10 THE PUSH START FAILED. I HAD TO CALL THE HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS WALKED THRU THE OVER RIDE PROCESS TO GET THE CAR STARTED. IMMEDIATELY MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT FOR THIS ISSUE AND TOOK IT IN ON 4/13. ON THIS DAY IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE THERMOSTAT AND THEY NEEDED TO CORRECT IT, I AUTHORIZED IT AND IT WAS ALL COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THERE WAS NO OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE. I PICKED MY CAR UP THAT SAME EVENING AND DROVE IT HOME AND NO WHERE ELSE FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND. 4/18 ABOUT 22 MILES DOWN THE HIGHWAY THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. 4/19 TOOK IT IN, I WAS TOLD THE THERMOSTAT PART THAT WAS INSTALLED WAS OBSOLETE AND THEY HAD MY CAR FOR 6 DAYS WAITING ON THE NEW PART AND DOING INSTALLATION. I WAS PROVIDED A RENTAL CAR AT $60+ OUT OF POCKET COST FOR INSURANCE. PICKED UP MY CAR 4/25 AND DROVE IT ABOUT 175 MILES ( IT IS 126 MILES ROUND TRIP FROM HOME TO WORK) AND 4/26 THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN. I SIT HERE NOW WITH NO HYUNDAI BECAUSE IT IS AT THE DEALERS GETTING REPAIRS AGAIN!!! AGAIN!!! OPTED NOT TO USE THE RENTAL CAR SERVICE THIS TIME AS IT WOULD COST MORE THAN $50 PER DAY OUT OF MY OWN POCKET FOR AN UNCERTAINED AMOUNT OF TIME. NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS AND I HAVENT EVEN MADE MY FIRST CAR PAYMENT YET. AND ON 4/24 THE DAY BEFORE I PICK MY CAR UP FOR THE SECOND TIME, A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THE BRAKE LAMPS...REALLY HYUNDAI??? REALLY??? WHAT MAKES THIS CAR CERTIFIED? WHAT WAS THE INSPECTION EXACTLY THAT OCCURED TO CERTIFY THIS VEHICLE?? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 90,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
