TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THE CONTACT NOTICED THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS POSITIONED EXTREMELY LOW ADDING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE PASSENGER IF A CRASH OCCURRED AND THE AIR BAG WOULD DEPLOY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT WAS THE DESIGN OF THE SEAT AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO MAKE CHANGES TO THE DESIGN . THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 492.
THE VEHICLE (2011 HYUNDAI SONATA 2.0T) LEAKS GAS AT THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AFTER FILL UP. THIS CAN CONTINUE AFTER 2 BARS REMOVED OFF FROM FUEL GAUGE. IT HAS LEAKED IN THE GARAGE, WHICH INTURN HAS GOT GAS FUMES IN THE HOUSE. THERE IS ALSO AN EXTREMELY STRONG ODOR OF GAS IN THE CABIN. WE HAVE TO DRIVE WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN TO CLEAR THE FUMES. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IS NOT TAKING SERIOUS. WILL IT TAKE AN EXPLOSION FOR SOMEONE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT SIMILAR ISSUES. THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS EVERY TIME THAT WE FILL UP THE CAR. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES FOR THIS COMPLAINT. *TR
THE CONSTANT RECURRING PROBLEM IS MY CAR WILL NOT START. I HAVE BEEN STRANDED SEVERAL TIMES AND HAVE EACH ONE DOCUMENTED. I ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKING AND THE BRAKES ARE UNABLE TO PRESS. I HAVE CONTACTED AN ATTORNEY REGARDING THE LEMON LAW AND SHE HAS NOTIFIED THE HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY IN THE REPAIR SHOP AGAIN AND THIS HAS GONE ON FOR THE 2 1/2 YEARS I HAVE OWNED IT. THERE ARE OVER 598,000 COMPLAINTS AGAINST THIS MODEL OF CAR AND THE PROBLEMS ARE VERY SERIOUS AND CAN CAUSE DEADLY ACCIDENTS. MY CAR WILL NOT CLICK OUT OF THE CRUISE CONTROL FEATURE SO I CANNOT USE THAT FEATURE. THE BRAKE LIGHTS DO NOT ALWAYS WORK AND I HAVE BEEN STOPPED BY CARS BEHIND ME TO TELL ME I HAVE NO LIGHTS AND THEY ALMOST HIT ME. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET THIS MODEL OF CAR RECALLED BEFORE MANY DEATHS OCCUR. THE INTERNET HAS THIS PROBLEM DOCUMENTED AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED TO REPLACE THAT SWITCH. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR IN TO HAVE THE BRAKE LIGHT SENSOR REPLACED TWICE AND IT STILL OCCURS. I HAVE TO CONTINUE TO PAY PAYMENTS ON THIS CAR WHILE I DRIVE A RENTAL CAR. I BASICALLY DO NOT HAVE A SAFE CAR TO DRIVE SO I CAN'T GO ANYWHERE IN FEAR OF BEING STRANDED. CAN YOU PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS AND SAFE LIVES BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED AS HE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF HIS VEHICLE AND HE THEN INTO A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HIM. BOTH THE DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER DOOR OPENED SIMULTANEOUSLY. NO ONE FELL OUT OF THE VEHICLE SINCE THEY BOTH WERE WEARING SEAT BELTS. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE VEHICLE. THREE PEOPLE WERE TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL WITH HEAD, CHEST AND BACK INJURIES, THEY WERE TREATED AND RELEASED. NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED INDICATING THAT THE AIR BAGS MALFUNCTIONED. THE POLICE WAS NOTIFIED AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THE DEALER WERE NOTIFIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,550. UPDATED 09/27/11*LJ UPDATED 2/23/12 *CN
PURCHASED A 2011 SONATA HYBRID (PREMIUM PACKAGE). SINCE DRIVING OFF THE LOT THE CAR PULLS TO THE LEFT AND VIBRATES BETWEEN 65-75MPH. BROUGHT IT TO A LOCAL DEALER FOR SERVICE AND THEY PERFORMED A COMPUTER WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND STRAIGHT TRAK. PROBLEMS STILL EXISTS ALL THE TIME. FROM LOOKING AT THE LISTING, THERE ARE OVER 100 COMPLAINTS ON THIS THAT ARE REGISTERED FOR 2011 HYUNDAI SONATAS. NHTSA, PLEASE HELP THE CONSUMERS WITH THIS PROBLEM. EVEN WHEN CALLING THE HYUNDAI TOLL FREE NUMBER, THEY ACT LIKE IT IS THE FIRST TIME THEY HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR
TWICE THE FRONT BUMPER HAS SEPARATED FROM BODY ON MY DAUGHTERS 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA, THE FIRST TIME THE DEALER STATED SHE MUST HAVE HIT SOMETHING BUT THIS WAS NOT THE CASE EVEN THOUGH THE DEALER INSISTED ON PUTTING THE CAR UP ON A LIFT TO INSPECT FOR DAMAGE, THE CAR WAS ONLY ON THE ROAD FOR 3 DAYS OR LESS. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER NO CHARGE. NOW THE CAR IS 3 MONTHS OLD AND THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. THE BUMPER IS NOT ATTACHED TO THE BODY PROPERLY IN THE DESIGN PROCESS, AND WHATEVER CLIPS THEY USE RELEASE THE BUMPER WHEN THE CAR IS DRIVEN. SOONER OR LATER THE BUMPER WILL FLY OFF THIS CAR AND EITHER BLIND THE DRIVER WHEN IT DAMAGES THE WINDSHIELD OR CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WHEN A DRIVER BEHIND THE BUMPERLESS CAR AVOIDS THE DEBRIS OF THE BUMPER. THIS CAR SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FOR AN IMMEDIATE RECALL. DEFECTIVE ATTACHMENT OF BUMPER TO BODY. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. *TR
AT 5:15 PM ON 8/22/11, I GOT INTO MY CAR TO GO WORK AND IT WOULD NOT START. IT WAS VERY HOT AND I WAS SWEATING TRYING TO GET THE CAR STARTED. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT START. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND I GOT NO ASSISTANCE. THE SCREEN ON THE DASH-BOARD READ "PRESS THE BRAKES" WHICH I DID LIKE I HAVE DONE IN THE PAST. I GAVE UP AND CONTACTED A FRIEND TO TAKE ME TO WORK. LATER, THAT NIGHT IT DID START BUT WOULD NOT START AGAIN SO I ASSUMED IT WAS THE BATTERY. I CALLED ROADSIDE SERVICE AND THEY ARRIVED 5:30 AM IN THE MORNING TO JUMP START THE CAR (NOT THE BATTERY). IT GETS BETTER, A LADY THAT LIVES IN MY AREA WAS WALKING HER DOG, WHO HAS A BLACK SONATA 2011 TOLD ME THAT HER SONATA WOULD NOT START AND SHE JUST GOT HER VEHICLE BACK. SHE TOLD ME WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN WHILE I WAS WAITING ON A TOW TRUCK AND EXPLAINED HOW THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A BAD SITUATION IF I WAS STRANDED WITH MY MOTHER IN THE CAR WHO JUST HAD SURGERY TO REMOVE CANCER. I EXPLAINED THAT I NEEDED MY CAR REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE I NEEDED TO TRANSPORT MY MOTHER AND I WAS CONCERN THE CAR WOULD STOP WORKING AGAIN. THE HYUNDAI REPRESENTATIVE STATED HE WOULD HAVE IT FIXED IN 15 MINUTES AND HE ALSO INDICATED THAT THERE HAS BEEN A FEW SONATAS THAT THE "SENSOR" UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS GONE BAD. THE SALESPERSON THAT SOLD THE VEHICLE TO ME STATED THE SAME THAT THE "SENSOR" GOES BAD. EIGHT (8) MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP AND THE LADY WITH THE BLACK SONATA HAD HER CAR LESS. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER SAID HE HAS PICKED UP A COUPLE OF SONATAS THAT WOULD NOT START. *KB
2011 SONATA PUSH BUTTON ENGINE START PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE STARTING WHEN PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE AND THE BUTTON IS PRESSED. NOTHING HAPPENS. REATTEMPTED 3 TIME NOTHING, 4TH TIME STARTED. TOOK TO DEALER THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE STOP SWITCH WORKED FINE FOR 2 DAYS FOLLOWING THEN SAMETHING HAPPENED SEVERAL TIME IN THE FOLLOWING TWO DAYS. HAVE NOT TAKEN BACK TO DEALER YET, NEED TO AS "NEW" CAR IS NOT RELIABLE. NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO STOP STARTING AND HOW LONG IT WILL BE BEFORE IT WILL START AGAIN. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN SHIFTING INTO DRIVE, THE INDICATOR LIGHT WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE AND HE WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE UNKNOWN REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE YET THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE NOR WAS THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 29,799 AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
"ESC" LIGHT ACTIVATED INTERMITTENTLY OVER PAST FOUR DAYS. SUDDENLY BRAKE SWITCH FAILED, RESULTING IN BRAKE LIGHTS FAILING COMPLETELY. UNABLE TO START THE VEHICLE (SINCE THAT REQUIRES BRAKE PEDAL TO BE PRESSED, AND BRAKE SWITCH FAILURE MEANS CAR DOESN'T KNOW PEDAL IS DEPRESSED), AND UNABLE TO SWITCH GEARS AT ALL FOR SAME REASON. THIS FAILURE HAS OCCURRED ON TWO SEPARATE HYUNDAI SONATAS I HAVE OWNED (A 2006 AND NOW A 2011) MORE THAN A DOZEN TIMES. THE MOST RECENT TIME WAS IN THIS VEHICLE, 28 DAYS AGO. THIS FAILURE IS KNOWN BY HYUNDAI, BUT STILL REQUIRES A TIME AND MONEY INVESTMENT TO FIX, I HAVE LOST HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF MY TIME TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN MITIGATED. I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THE FIRST SEVERAL BRAKE SWITCH REPLACEMENTS, THEY HAVE SINCE BEEN COVERED BY THE DEALER. HYUNDAI SAYS THEY HAVE DEVELOPED A NEW BRAKE SWITCH WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO LAST LONGER, BUT THE FAILURES PERSIST. *KB
2011 SONATA SE DROPPED TO 4TH GEAR AT 70 MPH WITH LOUD BANG HAPPENED ONCE AND PUT IN SHOP COMPUTER HAD CODE TO REPLACE MODULE AND SOMETHING ELSE PARTS ON ORDER SHIFT SOLENOID *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AS THE VEHICLE FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY STATED THAT THE BRAKE SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED SPORADICALLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000.
FOR THE SECOND TIME, IN INTERSTATE HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC (70MPH) THE CAR WITHOUT WARNING DOWNSHIFTED. A THUNDEROUS CLUNK IS ACCOMPANIED BY THE CAR LURCHING AS IT DEACCELERATES THEN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY RESUMES SPEED. BUT INSTEAD OF THE ENGINE BEING AT 1800 RPM ITS CLOSER TO TWICE THAT. IN BOTH CASES THE DRIVER BEHIND ME THOUGHT THAT I BRAKED INTENTIONALLY AND NEARLY REAR ENDED ME. THE CAR IS THEN STUCK IN A LOWER GEAR AND IS DRIVEABLE WITH EXTREMELY POOR RESPONSE. I HAD IT TOWED ONCE AT THE DEALER'S REQUEST AND THE LAST TIME I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT TO A DIFFERENT NEARBY DEALER TO DEMONSTRATE THAT UNQUESTIONABLY THE CAR WAS STUCK IN ONE GEAR. IT IS AN AUTOMATIC. I'M SKEPTICAL THAT EITHER DEALER HAS ANY CLUE TO WHAT IS WRONG. I WON'T LET ANYONE IN THE FAMILY BESIDES ME DRIVE THE VEHICLE AS I'M AFRAID FOR THEIR SAFETY. IT HAS LESS THAN 7000 MILES AND IS 8 MONTHS OLD. THE FIRST EVENT WAS OVER 1000 MILES AGO AND ABOUT 5 WEEKS EARLIER. *TR
THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED IN A THUNDERSTORM: "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" WARNING LIT UP AND ALARM SOUNDED. CAR LOST POWER. HAD TO PULL OFF ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT WAS FINE. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD IT WAS "WATER ON THE SERPENTINE BELT AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT." SECOND INCIDENT WAS APPROX. 1 WEEK LATER WHEN THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH THE "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" LIGHT AND ALARM AND CAR LOST POWER. I PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. TURNED CAR OFF AND RESTARTED. THIRD INCIDENT, A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" ALARM. SAME SCENARIO. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP. THEY CONDUCTED A SYSTEM DOWNLOAD TO ONBOARD COMPUTER. NOW IT IS A DAILY OCCURRENCE. COULDN'T GET OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY TODAY AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR 4 TIMES. WILL BE CONTACTING DEALERSHIP TOMORROW. *TT

DRIVING ON THE FREEWAYS AT ROUGHLY 45MPH WITH AIR CONDITIONING ON WITHOUT HARD ACCELERATION. VEHICLE HAD ROUGHLY 7300MI. VEHICLE LOST POWER AND DECELERATED, CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT TURNS ON, SEVERAL LIGHTS WERE FLASHING AND THE VEHICLE WAS BEEPING. I DROVE ON TO THE SHOULDER AND CAME TO A STOP. I TOOK A SHORT VIDEO OF THE DASH BEFORE TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND TURNING IT BACK ON. IT OPERATES FINE AFTER THIS INCIDENT. THIS INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED TWICE, THE SECOND TIME MORE ERROR LIGHTS WERE SHOWN BUT OTHERWISE IDENTICAL TO ABOVE, TRAVELING ROUGHLY 65MPH ON A HIGHWAY WITH AIR CONDITIONING OFF IT OCCURRED AT ROUGHLY 7700 MILES. *TR
ESC LIGHT CAME ON IN PERFECT DRY CONDITIONS AND THEN THE CAR WAS UNABLE TO BE PUT INTO GEAR. TURNED CAR ON AND OFF A FEW TIMES AND IT STOPPED AND I WAS ABLE TO GET IT INTO GEAR. *TR
MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" LAMP ILLUMINATED WITH CHIME ALARM ACTIVATION WHILE DRIVING, CAUSING LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. HYBRID BATTERY CHARGE LEVEL WAS AT 1/2, WHICH IS WHERE IT NORMALLY IS. I PRESSED ON GAS PEDAL AND GOT NO RESPONSE, AND VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP AS IF I APPLIED THE PARKING BRAKE. I PLACED VEHICLE IN PARK, SHUT OFF ENGINE AND RE-STARTED IT AND IT RAN NORMALLY. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED IN THE PAST 4 WEEKS OR SO. ON A HYUNDAI FORUM WEBSITE, THERE IS AT LEAST 1 OTHER CUSTOMER WHICH HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR HYBRID AS MYSELF. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IF YOU ARE ON THE HIGHWAY AND YOU ARE FORCED TO STOP WHILE IN FLOW OF TRAFFIC. *TT
I HAVE A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA SE, I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I KNOW THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND THEY KEEP TELLING ME THAT THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE AND SEND ME ON MY WAY. IT HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES WHEN MY FIANCE OR I HAVE DRIVEN IT, NOW MY DAUGHTER (WHO JUST GOT HER LEARNER'S PERMIT) HAD IT HAPPEN TO HER. THE TRANNY SLIPS, IT MAKES A LOUD CLUNK WHEN TRYING TO GO IN REVERSE THEN THE CAR WILL NOT MOVE. I HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK, TURN IT OFF AND ON AGAIN THEN TRY AGAIN! OTHER TIMES I WILL BE DRIVING AND THE CAR REVS UP AND WONT MOVE THEN SLIPS INTO GEAR AND THEN CLUNKS BACK IN GEAR AGAIN CAUSING THE CAR TO BUCK. THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD PULL TO THE LEFT MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE OR DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE TECHNICIAN PERFORMED A TIRE ROTATION, A FRONT AND REAR END ALIGNMENT, APPLIED A LUBRICANT TO THE STEERING AND SUSPENSION, AND TIGHTENED THE FRAME BOLTS BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,300.
I BOUGHT A 2011 SONATA 2.0T 2 WEEKS AGO. I AM HAVING ISSUES WITH THE CAR PULLING TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT. THIS VEHICLE HAS 17 INCH WHEELS. *TR

WITH TRAFFIC IN DFW THE WAY IT IS, THIS WAS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE.
AFTER PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW, I CONTINUALLY COMPLAINED TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS THAT THE DRIVERS FLOORMAT WAS NOT REMAINING SECURE AND WOULD SLIDE UP ONTO THE ACCELERATOR. MOST DEALERSHIPS SIMPLY REATTACHED THE MAT TO THE TETHER ATTACHED TO THE CARPET. I CONTINUALLY COMPLAINED THAT THIS WAS NOT SUFFICIENT BECAUSE UPON ENTERING THE VEHICLE THE MAT SLID OFF THE TETHER AND WOULD BEGIN ITS JOURNEY FORWARD. WHILE DRIVING, AT VARIOUS TIMES, MOVING ONES FOOT FROM THE BRAKE TO THE ACCELERATOR WOULD THEN CREATE PROBLEMS WITH SUDDEN ACCELERATION. FINALLY, A DEALER IN SCRANTON PA., DICKSON CITY HYUNDAI DECIDED TO ORDER NEW FLOOR TETHERS. AFTER MONTHS - I RETURNED TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE AND THEY ADVISED THE TETHERS WERE NOT THERE .. AGAIN, AFTER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF OVER THREE WEEKS OF MY CAR LEFT AT THE DEALERSHIP AS IT WAS A HAZARD TO DRIVE, THEY REPLACED THE CARPET AND TETHERS THAT ATTACH TO IT. THREE WEEKS THIS CAR SAT AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR TETHERS. DURING THIS PERIOD, I INVESTIGATED THIS MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR VEHICLE ON THE INTERNET. LOW AND BEHOLD, THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT. THE BATTERIES HAVE BEEN REPLACED IN THE KEY FOB AND THIS DOES NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START THE CAR THE COMPUTER SIMPLY STATES TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND PUSH THE START BUTTON, WHICH I'VE BEEN DOING. THE BRAKE PEDAL OFTEN FEELS HARD AS A ROCK ALMOST LIKE IT'S LOCKED.THE NORMAL DIAGNOSTIC LIGHTS AND FUEL GUAGE DOES OPERATE BUT THE CAR DOESN'T START. I'VE WAITED AS LONG AS 1/2 HOUR ATTEMPTING AND RE-ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE. AFTER IT STARTS, THE CAR MAY WORK PERFECTLY FINE FOR THE NEXT FEW TRIPS UNTIL THE PROBLEM REAPPEARS. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE CAR FEELS UNSAFE BUT HYUNDAI DOESN'T SEEM TO CARE. I TRIED CALLING THEIR HYUNDAI USA TOLL FREE NUMBER BUT HAVE NOT HAD ANY HELP FROM HYUNDAI USA. I THINK THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE A FULL RECALL TO HAVE HYUNDAI CORRECTLY ADDRESS AND FIX THE PROBLEM. I'VE SPENT ALMOST TWO MONTHS AND THREE TRIPS TO DEALERSHIPS TO HAVE THEM MICKEY MOUSE AROUND AND TELL ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A "SIMPLE BALANCE PROBLEM" OR A "SIMPLE ALIGNMENT PROBLEM" WHEN CLEARLY THE CAR STILL PULLS TO THE LEFT AND MOVES SIDE TO SIDE. TONIGHT I WAS REAR ENDED BY A WOMAN IN AN SUV, WHO'S BRAKES DID NOT WORK IN HER DURANGO, SHE SAID. THERE WERE NO SKID MARKS INDICATING AN ATTEMPTED STOP. HER IMPACT ON MY VEHICLE WAS SEVERE. POLICE OFFICER GUESSED SHE WAS GOING 40 MPH WHEN SHE HIT MY CAR. MY CAR WAS SHOVED FORWARD INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF MINE, THAT CAR THEN HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF IT. THERE WERE 3 CARS, MINE LAST IN LINE, SITTING AT A RED LIGHT. WE WERE ALL STOPPED. THEN THERE WAS A 4TH CAR THAT HIT MINE FROM BEHIND. THIS IS NOT A "TORQUE-STEER" ISSUE (THE TENDENCY OF FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE CARS TO VEER UNDER ACCELERATION DUE TO UNEVEN TORQUE TO THE FRONT WHEELS). EVEN ON CRUISE CONTROL, IF YOU DON'T APPLY CONSTANT "RIGHT" CORRECTION, THE CAR WILL VEER LEFT. THE CROWN OF THE ROAD DOES NOT STOP THIS, NOR IS IT A WIND ISSUE. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN ON 7/25/11 AND WENT ON A TEST DRIVE WITH THE TECHNICIAN. TECHNICIAN STATED HE COULD SEE THE VEHICLE PULLING RIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS RELEASED TO ME AND IMMEDIATELY I NOTICED THE VEHICLE WAS NOW PULLING TO THE LEFT ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER SPEEDS. RECEIVED A URGENT RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL AND BROUGHT CAR BACK TO ORIGINAL DEALER. CAR WAS RELEASED TO ME AND IS STILL PULLING SEVERELY TO THE RIGHT AFTER BEING IN THE SHOP 6 TIMES. *TR
ENGINE CAN EASILY BECOME HYDRO-LOCKED IN HEAVY RAIN AND ROAD SPLASH BACK FROM OTHER VEHICLES DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE DIRECT AIR INTAKE OF THE SONATA HYBRID. WITH ITS DESIGN, IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY WATER BAFFLES TO PREVENT WATER FROM ENTERING THE AIR FILTER AND ONCE IT ENTERS THE AIR FILTER BOX, THERE ARE NO DRAIN HOLES FOR IT TO DRAIN OUT. THIS FORCES THE WATER THROUGH THE ENGINE AS THAT IS THE ONLY WAY FOR IT TO GET OUT OF THE FILTER BOX. WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED, NO ELECTRONIC CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED AND THE CAR REMAINED IN THE 'READY' STATE. THIS COULD LEAD TO DAMAGE OF THE HEV SYSTEM AND BATTERY PACK. PER THE TECHNICIAN SERVICING THE CAR, THEY STATED THAT THE HEV WARNING LIGHT ONLY ILLUMINATED WHEN THE HEV BATTERY REACHES 15% CHARGE (THE POINT AT WHICH THEY HAVE TO REPLACE IT), THIS CONTRADICTS WITH THE OWNER'S MANUAL AS WELL AS COUNTERACTS THE PURPOSE OF A WARNING LAMP. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE DESIGN WHERE THE COMPUTER CONTROLS WHEN THE ENGINE START/STOPS, THE ENGINE CAN DAMAGE ITSELF BEFORE PREVENTATIVE ACTION CAN BE TAKEN. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN THE ENGINE STALLS DUE TO WATER INGESTION THROUGH THE AIR FILTER AND THE OXYGEN SENSOR DETERMINES IT CANNOT COMPENSATE, THE ENGINE WILL STALL, BUT BEFORE THE SITUATION CAN BE RECTIFIED, THE COMPUTER ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE ENGINE CAUSING IT TO BECOME HYDRO-LOCKED. WITH MY EXPERIENCE, I AM CONVINCED THAT THE DESIGN OF THE CAR IS FLAWED AND IS UNRELIABLE TO DRIVE IN A HEAVY RAIN SCENARIO WHICH LEAVES IT UNUSABLE SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL HYBRIDS IN THE PAST (2001 AND 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS) THAT I OPERATED THROUGH THE SAME CONDITIONS AS YOUR VEHICLE AND I DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THEM. ADDITIONALLY, WITH THE TOYOTA, WHEN THE ENGINE STALLS AGAINST THE COMPUTER'S CONTROL (E.G.: RUNNING OUT OF FUEL), THE HEV AND ENGINE WARNING LIGHT BOTH ILLUMINATED AND THE 'READY' LIGHT WAS DE-ILLUMINATED. *TR
2011 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED WITH PUSH BUTTON START. PURCHASED THE CAR IN MAY 2011. AT 1600 MILES, THE CAR WOULD NOT START. BRAKE WILL NOT DEPRESS IN ORDER TO START CAR. DEALERSHIP REPLACED BRAKE LIGHT SENSOR PART #93810-3S000. AT 3200 MILES, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. DEALERSHIP WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM, SINCE THEY CAN NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM.. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS RECURRING ISSUE WHICH HYUNDAI NEEDS TO RECOGNIZE AND FIND A DEFINITE REPAIR. MOST CONSUMERS DO NOT HAVE THE FREE TIME TO WAIT NUMEROUS HOURS FOR SERVICE HELP WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START A NEW CAR THAT SHOULD START WITHOUT FLAW. DO NOT PURCHASE A NEW HYUNDAI SONATA. IT MAY LOOK LIKE A LUXURY CAR - REMEMBER, LOOKS ARE DECEIVING. *TR
2012 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS, 200 MILES ON ODOMETER. VEHICLE PULLS TO THE RIGHT. MUST MAINTAIN CONSTANT PRESSURE ON STEERING WHEEL TO MAINTAIN STRIGHT TRAVEL. VEHICLE MOVES COMPLETLY INTO NEXT LANE WITHIN 4 SECONDS OF RELEASING WHEEL. THE CAR HAS BEEN BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THREE DAYS AND NO APPARENT FIX SO FAR. *TT
THIS IS WHAT I WROTE TO HYUNDAI: RENTED A SONATA. LOVED THE CAR EXCEPT: SAFETY ISSUE. WHILE USING THE CRUISE CONTROL THE CAR LEAPED AHEAD SEVERAL TIMES AFTER I HAD APPLIED THE BRAKE (BECAUSE I WAS GETTING TOO CLOSE TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME) AND WAS TEMPORARILY HANDLING SPEED WITHOUT THE CRUISE CONTROL. NEARLY HAD AN ACCIDENT ON TWQ SUCH OCCASIONS. THEN I FIGURED OUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING. THE "RESUME" BUTTON IS SO CLOSE TO THE RIM OF THE WHEEL, AND SO EXPOSED, THAT THE HEEL OF MY RIGHT HAND WAS TOUCHING IT INADVERTANTLY AND THE CRUISE CONTROL REENGAGED WHEN I DIDN'T WANT IT TO AND DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS HAPPENING. IMHO, YOUR BUTTON NEEDS TO BE RELOCATED OR PROTECTED BY A RIDGE. IMHO, THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED NOW. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU AGREE. IF NOT, I WILL CONTACT THE NTSB. 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS PULLS RIGHT. TOOK THE CAR FOR INSPECTION A FEW DAYS AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR. THEY RE-ALIGNED THE WHEELS BUT THE PROBLEM STILL REMAINS. I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY THEY HAVE SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE THE CAR TO 2ND DEALERSHIP FOR 2ND INSPECTION BEFORE THEY CAN ACT ON THE ISSUE. NOTE:THIS COMPLAINT IS FOR 2012 MODEL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE STARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING LIGHT AND AIR BAG LIGHT BOTH ILLUMINATED. THE AIR CONDITIONER ALSO WOULD NOT FUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSIS AND TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE WAS INSTALLED INTO THE VEHICLE. SHORTLY AFTER THE REPAIR, THE FAILURES BEGAN TO OCCUR AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AGAIN FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE WAS REPLACED. AFTER THE REPAIR, THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 33,000.
