NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The vehicle has been slowing down and failing to drive. Took it to the mechanic and the vehicle caught on fire. The mechanic said other vehicles had the same issue. When I called Hyundai they said my VIN was not apart of that recall and they can only go off of that. I have a vehicle that has been sitting for a long time unable to use because of engine problems that Hyundai is well aware of.
Without warning, the Sonata stalls while in motion: - the brake pedal goes close to the floor, - the CHECK BRAKE light goes on, - the emergency brake audio alarm and light go on, - the READY light between the fuel and temperature gauges blinks. I have to pull over and turn the car off / on in order to get the car functional again. The speed of the car doesn't seem to matter. This has occurred 11 times over the past year, including 6 times today (7/22/2021) within a span of 15 min, while at speeds between 30- 60 mph. I took the car to the dealer (initially on 6/22/2021). There were no diagnostic error codes and they could not reproduce the problem. I called Hyundai, both on 6/22/2021 and today, to file a report. Hyundai did not provide any insights into the issue. Online, I have read of others having this same issue with Sonatas. Some believe a faulty power brake booster to be the cause.
I almost got into an accident on the highway with my family when returning home with my family my car started to sputter and the check engine light started blinking the car wouldnt accelerate on the highway almost got into an accident with a truck. my family and i was terrified. i took it to autozone they notified me its an problem with my engine, rod bearings, the representative ,informed me alot of sonatas have came in with the same issue. that occurance reminded me on the letter i received few months back informing me on a national recall. I truly need assistance fixing my car ive lost days from work due to my transportation not working properly. Please help
The taillight socket is melting disabling the effective use of the brake system to alert other drivers the vehicle is stopping. The light works but can not be reinserted into the given space because it has melted close on the tailight cause my entire tail light to have to be replaced. The light bulb then melted into the trunk space and could have caused a fire but luckily we smelled it and moved the placement. I have almost been rear ending multiple times cause long the oncoming driver to swerve off the road to avoid hitting me because they were not able to see I was stopped. I have been stopped by law enforcement and given a warning thankfully. I have sent a complaint to hyundai and have seen multiple complaints and myself seen multiple sonatas on the road with no tail light/brake light issues. My dealer wants to charge over $600-1000 to repair this imperative issue. There was no indication they were malfunctioning until they had melted into the socket. On both lights. I have read multiple complaints on this same issue. This is an important part of the car that needs to be fixed for driver safety.
I was on the on ramp of the freeway with the closest vehicle several hundred yards in front and no vehicles behind or on the side of me when my sunroof "exploded". Fortunately the curtain was drawn so no glass poured in the vehicle, but when I pulled over half the sunroof was gone and the remainder in shredded. I do no believe anything struck the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, an abnormally loud popping sound was heard inside the vehicle and the steering wheel was shaking and vibrating while driving at high speeds. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and the vehicle was diagnosed with an intermediate shaft failure. The contact was informed that the intermediate shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The contact pulled into a service station, checked the engine oil level, and topped off the engine oil. Later that day the contact started the vehicle and drove to his brother’s residence and heard the loud knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The vehicle shuddered. The vehicle remained parked at his brother’s residence. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacture was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,315.
There is looseness/excessive play in the steering, causing a jerkiness motion side-to-side with minimal movement of the steering wheel. There is also a clunking noise when turning and when going over bumps in the road, sometimes the bumps cause the steering wheel to jerk to the side resulting in the car veering to the left or right. When this occurs traveling at a higher speed, I'm afraid it could result in either veering into the ditch or into oncoming traffic. I had my mechanic inspect the issue, thinking it was a suspension problem, but was informed it was a faulty "steering column flexible coupler" that is a known issue with this particular vehicle. This steering issue seems to be getting worse and worse by the day.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 50 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power without warning. The vehicle was towed to two different independent mechanics on two separate occasions, and the mechanics informed the contact that there were recalls associated with the failure. Upon researching, the contact saw that there were five recalls associated with the VIN; NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V152000 (Seat Belts), 15V568000 (Engine), 18V137000 (Seat Belts, Air Bags), 15V759000 (Exterior Lighting), and 16V190000 (Steering). The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, but the dealer informed the contact that they would not perform the recall repairs since the vehicle was supposed to have the recall repairs performed in 2018 when the recall notifications were mailed. The contact stated that he purchased the vehicle three years ago and never received the recall notifications. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
Was driving on city streets, stopped in traffic for red light. The engine caught on fire. No warning, everything seemed fine up to that point.
My airbag light will not go off . return the car back to the dealer . Car in the shop seen July 1 2021 and the dealer change my Sensor out three times, still the light stay on. One time the shop told me the wire harness was the problem, Recall in 2018 was to put a wire filter to help with the problem .
Engine locked up and is to be replaced under theta lawsuit. 12month warranty rebuilt engine is all they offer. Not happy. Car worth 8k and now I can't get 2k. Went to pick it up and it won't start. CALLED customer service for options and no response just delays for 5 was. Can't find a lawyer to help. Please help.
Lost all power going up hill and now only goes about 20 mph and runs bad
I was driving my car on the highway and it suddenly shuddered while I was going 70+mph and the engine light came on and kept flashing. I had to pull off to the side of the road and call for service. I took my car to my local mechanic who told me it was a knock sensor issue and it had to go to the dealership for repair. I then had it towed to the dealership where they told me my motor needed to be replaced. The dealership had my car for almost 3 months to replace the motor. The next day after I picked up my car from the dealership for the engine replacement my battery quit, my headlights quit and my passenger side window motor quit. These were all working fine before the engine went out. Then on the Monday after my check engine light came on. I took it back to the dealer and they told me it was an EVAP sensor that needed to be replaced but wast part of the engine replacement so I had to pay for it to be repaired. They had my car for another week and replaced the sensor. One week exactly after getting it back for the 2nd time my check engine light came on again. The dealership told me it was the EVAP sensor again but they had to call technical support to get a plan to fix it. They told me it was perfectly fine to drive while they are waiting to hear what to do from technical support. The car is now parked in my driveway because I can not physically put gas in it and the one time I was able to put gas in it, I drove approx 120 miles on a full tank of gas and my low fuel light came on and it shows little to no gas on the gas gauge. I am afraid to drive it because I am afraid it will catch on fire or I will mess up the fuel injectors or worse.
motor ticking. car gets hot. car runs rough
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at 70 MPH, the contact noticed the EPS warning light illuminated. The contact continued to drive but noticed the steering wheel of the vehicle was very loose causing the vehicle to swerve on the road. The contact lost automatic power steering which caused the contact to crash into a medium wall on the side of the road. The air bags did not deploy. There was no medical treatment at the scene. No one was injured. No police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle and diagnosed the failure as an electric issue with power steering that would need to be repaired by a local dealer. The vehicle was not repaired..The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 195,000.
Headlights have burnt out 4 times in 1 year w/install, break/tail lights have burnt out 6 times in 1 year w/ install. Cruise control isn't staying set and airbag light is on unknown reason after OBD scan. Break lights have burnt thru the connection piece, causing damage, overpower from the wiring harness has caused over load of power which caused lights to burn out and even burst. Multiple drivers with similar problems, airbag may still deploy for no reason or not deploy at all. Cruise control malfunction possibly due to airbag issues, but may also be from faulty wiring throughout the vehicle and ultimately into the sterring console. Computer or motherboard may also now have damages cause by over amped volts of electricity without a serge protecter. Possibility of electrical damages, caused by overload from power supply and directed throught the vehicle may have cause exponential damages to electrical in the sonata. Causing a serious safety concern and hazard. Exterior lighting requires new wiring harnesses and connection pieces as well as new casing from over amp overload, resulting in overheating and bulb combustion damages. New airbag assembly is probable and reset of mother board with upgraded features and completely new wiring with serge protection is necessary.
The contact’s daughter owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed but was not yet repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V568000 (Engine) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 132,000.
Driver air bag light stays illuminated while vehicle is operating.
Air bag light on All steering controls not working
It's a if the gas isn't getting to the engine. Check engine light is on. The code had read P0451..
Engine replaced under recall. “New” engine has low pressure after install. Car does not accelerate as needed. Check engine light and oil light come on. Took back to dealership several times, told an engine flush would fix problem, problem not fixed, told a tune up would fix problem, problem not fixed. Engine still has lower pressure. Dealership did testing requested by Hyundai corporation. Engine light still illuminated, engine still has low pressure, car still does not accelerate as needed. Have talked to several other people with Hyundai’s that have had engine replaced under recall, having same problems.
Car is very low I found a piece of my spring to my car in the street
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, he heard an abnormal knocking sound then the vehicle stalled. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the engine was replaced in 2017 after the engine seized. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the vehicle was over the 10,000 miles or 1-year warranty coverage for the engine replacement. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
I was driving down the street at about 25 mph and my vehicle stalled out on me and cut off. I was able to start it again, while attempting to get home and stalled and cut off a second time. Each time

my passenger headlight continuously goes out. I also have where my headlights completely go out as well as my interior lights. there is nothing out of the ordinary when it happens. Sometimes it will do it when I use a turn signal, other times just on it's own. I will have it happen very frequently and then not again for months. I also have the taillight burn out very often
I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH ON A HIGHWAY AND IT STARTED RAINING. I TURNED MY HEADLIGHTS ON AND THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON. I ALSO LOST ACCELERATION POWER UNTIL I COMPLETELY LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST MONTH. I ALSO AM UNABLE TO SET THE CRUISE CONTROL IF MY HEADLIGHTS ARE ON.
MY CAR LOSS POWER WHILE DRIVING FROM WORK AND SHUT OFF ALONG WITH A SLIGHT TICK. IT WOULDN'T START AND RESULTED IN ME GETTING IT TOWED.
The air bag light will not go off. I have seen lots of complaints about this same issue.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while her husband was driving 30 mph, the EPS warning light was illuminated, and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The driver was able to continue driving to the residence. The contact stated she also experienced the same failure while driving. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed it was an electronic failure. The contact towed the vehicle to local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the electronic steering assembly to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V190000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

Several people we know have the same issue as we do...the brake light wiring harness shorts out and keeps the lights from working and you can smack the side of the fender and it will work for a little while and go back off....my car was already inspected for this issue and it is an electrical issue. The headlights on our friends cars does it also.
My car when turned off locks but when turned back on will stay locked. Normally you can turn the car on and off a couple times and it will unlock itself but for the past couple months it is now impossible and is so unsafe to drive. I saw in 2009/2010 there was a recall for this with Hyundai and I’m pretty sure my car is now affected with the same thing but 2011 Hyundai sonata.
I BOUGHT MY VEHICLE FROM A LOCAL DEALERSHIP A WEEK AGO. THE HORN AND NONE OF THE FEATURES ON THE STEERING WHEEL WORK. THE FRONT PANEL OF THE STEERING WHEEL FEELS LOSE. I ALSO SMELL GAS OFTEN AND MY LEFT MUFFLER SMOKES AND I SOMETIMES SMELL BURNING RUBBER. NAVIGATION DOES NOT WORK AS IT SHOULD AND MY XM FEATURES DON'T WORK BECAUSE OF A BAD XM ANTENNA (SHARK FIN.) THERE IS VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEN BRAKING. MY TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT BLINKS AND THEN STAYS ON. THE KEY DOESN'T OPERATE THE LOCKS SOMETIMES.
INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION AND ENGINE KNOCKING. HYUNDAI NOT HONORING THEIR COMMITMENT TO REPLACE ENGINE FREE OF COST

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND MAKING A LEFT TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL FAILED TO OPERATE AS DESIGNED. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT MANUALLY TURNED THE STEERING TO THE LEFT AND TO THE RIGHT AND THE STEERING WHEEL RESUMED NORMAL FUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. NEITHER THE MANUFACTURER NOR THE DEALER WERE CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 126,000.
ON MARCH 1, 2021, I NOTICED AN ODD SMELL WHILE IDLING IN LINE. TURNED CAR OFF UNTIL IT WAS MY TURN. THE SMELL WAS GONE ONCE I TURNED IT BACK ON, SO THOUGHT IT WAS ANOTHER CAR AND DROVE TO WORK. THAT EVENING, SMELL STARTED AGAIN AFTER DRIVING A FEW MILES TO PARENT'S HOUSE. PARKED THE CAR AT PARENT'S AND ARRANGED TO DRIVE IT TO MECHANIC THE NEXT MORNING AFTER HAVING MY FATHER CONFIRM THERE WAS WATER IN THE RADIATOR AND THE OIL WASN'T TOO LOW. ENGINE TEMP GAUGE WAS NORMAL. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON, BUT HAD BEEN FOR THE LENGTH OF TIME I HAD CAR. I HAD IT CHECKED SEVERAL TIMES- ISSUE WOULD BE SUPPOSEDLY FOUND, BUT IT WOULD ALWAYS COME BACK ON. I WAS LED TO BELIEVE IT WAS A FAULTY SENSOR ISSUE. THERE WAS NOTHING OBVIOUSLY WRONG WHEN WE LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND HAD NO REASON TO THINK IT WOULD NOT BE SAFE TO DRIVE THE SHORT DISTANCE TO THE MECHANIC. NEXT MORNING, MARCH 2, 2021, I INTENDED TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE SHOP SO THEY COULD ADDRESS THE ISSUE CAUSING THE SMELL, AND FATHER FOLLOWED BEHIND. CAR SEEMED FINE AT FIRST, BUT AFTER A COUPLE OF MILES DRIVING ON SURFACE STREETS, THE SMELL CAME BACK. PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF CAR, THINKING THAT I WOULD NEED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED THE REMAINDER OF THE WAY. I SAW SOMETHING COME FROM UNDER HOOD. MY FATHER, WHO HAD BEEN FOLLOWING BEHIND, ASKED ME TO POP THE HOOD. AS I CLIMBED BACK IN THE CAR TO POP THE HOOD, I REALIZED THERE WAS SMOKE INSIDE THE CAR. I GOT OUT, TOLD MY DAD THAT THERE MIGHT BE A FIRE AS THERE WAS SMOKE INSIDE THE CAR. AS WE HAD THAT DISCUSSION, SMOKE STARTED POURING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND WE BACKED AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND CALLED 911. WITHIN SECONDS, THERE WERE VISIBLE FLAMES AND THE WHOLE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAME. TODAY, MARCH 10, 2021, I WAS MADE AWARE THAT 2011 HYUNDAI SONATAS WERE INCLUDED IN A LIST OF VEHICLES KNOWN TO CATCH FIRE, SO I AM FILING THIS NOTIFICATION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO DRIFT TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT HAD TO CONTROL THE STEERING WHEEL FOR THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE STRAIGHT AHEAD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED BEFORE THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HOWEVER, THE ENGINE LOCKED UP AND THE VEHICLE CEASED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO ANTWERPEN HYUNDAI OF CLARKSVILLE (12440 AUTO DR, CLARKSVILLE, MD 21029) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT REQUESTED THAT THE CONTACT PROVIDE INFORMATION ON OIL CHANGE INTERVALS WHICH WAS PROVIDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
MY SON WHO IS 18 HAD MY SONATA IN OSKALOOSA IOWA HE WAS DRIVING BACK TO HIS COLLEGE CAMPUS ON FEB, 27, 2021. WHILE DRIVING HIS ENGINE SEIZED UP (THE MECHANIC SAYS IT HAS BEARING AND ROD DAMAGE.) MY SON'S ONLY SAVING GRACE WAS THE FACT THAT THE CAR CONTINUED TO ROLL AND HE WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BEFORE GETTING REAR ENDED. HIS FRIENDS AND HIMSELF PUSHED THE CAR INTO A RADIO STATION PARKING LOT AND HAD TO FINISH WALKING BACK TO CAMPUS. ROSS SAID THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE MECHANIC PICKED UP THE SONATA ON THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. THE SONANTA MY SON SAID HAD STALLED OUT A COUPLE OF TIMES BEFORE THE ENGINE SEIZED BUT HE THOUGHT IT WAS DUE TO THE EXTREMELY COLD WEATHER AND CONDENSATION HAD DEVELOPED IN THE GAS TANK SO HE PUT STP IN THE GAS TANK. I DID SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT THE 2011 SONATA'S HAD A HISTORY OF ENGINE PROBLEMS, RECALLS, AND A LAW SUIT IN 2015 DUE TO RODS AND BEARING ISSUES. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI USA TO TRY AND RESOLVE THIS MATTER AND SEE WHAT ALL IS NEEDED TO BE DONE. HYUNDAI HAS DONE NOTHING BUT GIVE ME THE RUN AROUND, TRANSFERRING ME FROM ONE DEPARTMENT TO ANOTHER WITH ALL CLAIMING ITS NOT THEIR AREA. I'VE TRIED CALLING 4 TIMES AND EVEN ONE TIME LINDA IN THE SETTLEMENT DEPT. HUNG UP ON ME WHEN I TRIED ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT I NEED TO DO. ALL I WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER 18065084 AND TOLD ALISHA WAS MY CASE MANAGER BUT SHE APPEARS TO NEVER BE IN AND HAS NOT ONCE TRIED TO MAKE CONTACT WITH ME. I BELIEVE HYUNDAI IS NOT TRYING TO HONOR THE COURT DIRECTIVES AND ARE HAVING CARS WITH BAD ENGINES LEFT OUT ON THE ROADS.
