MISFIRE IN CYLINDER #4
DESPITE GOOD MAINTENANCE RECORDS, ENGINE SEIZED WHILE JEEP WAS IN MOTION, RESULTING IN TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER, STEERING AND BRAKE ASSIST. THERE WERE ZERO WARNINGS SUCH A THING WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN. NO ENGINE LIGHT. NO ABNORMAL ENGINE NOISE. NOTHING. THE ENGINE JUST SEIZED. FORTUNATELY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE GOING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. DEALER DESCRIBED ENGINE FAILURE AS 'ONE-IN-A-MILLION.' VALVE FELL INTO CYLINDER, CAUSING A DESTRUCTIVE CHAIN REACTION. UPON CONTACTING CHRYSLER'S CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND PRESENTING MY 'ONE-IN-A-MILLION' TYPE OF FAILURE (CASE ID# 28648873), I REQUESTED SUPPORT, BUT WAS TOLD THAT CHRYSLER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ME WITH ANY KIND OF SUPPORT AND THAT THE DECISION WAS FINAL. DOES ANYONE GO OUT BUYING A USED CAR EXPECTING THAT THE ENGINE WILL RUIN ITSELF ALL THE SUDDEN, JUST BECAUSE IT'S OVER 100K MILES? (THE MILEAGE BEING ONE OF THE REASONS WHY NO SUPPORT WOULD BE PROVIDED) THE 'AUTOCHECK' REPORT LISTED ONLY TWO OWNERS BEFORE ME. THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD BOUGHT THIS AS A 'PRE-OWNED CERTIFIED' CAR, AND AFTER 6 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP AND PROPER MAINTENANCE LET GO OF IT. THE AUTOCHECK REPORT RATED IT 79 ON A SCALE FROM 71 TO 84, AND I WAS IN EFFECT, JUST THE THIRD OWNER! THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD TO UNFORTUNATELY SURRENDER THE CAR TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY, GIVEN THE EXPENSIVE COSMETIC REPAIR COST OF A REAR END IMPACT. I PURCHASED THE CAR AT A PUBLIC AUTO AUCTION AND GOT THE REAR END REPAIRED. AS WEEKS HAVE GONE BY AND I'VE BEEN RESEARCHING MY OPTIONS, I HAVE COME TO LEARN THAT THOSE 3.7L POWERTECH ENGINES HAD SOME DESIGN FLAWS THAT HAVE COST NUMEROUS JEEP LIBERTY OWNERS ANYWHERE FROM DROPPED VALVES, TO FALLEN ROCKER ARMS, LEADING IN CASES LIKE MINE, TO CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. HAD MY ENGINE FAILURE TAKEN PLACE AT HIGHWAY SPEED, A POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING OUTCOME COULD HAVE HAPPENED.
AUTO MADE LOUD NOISES AND STOPPED RUNNING. WOULD NOT START. HAD TOWED TO JEEP DEALER WHO HAD IT FOR 3 MONTHS AND THEY MADE SURE THAT THE TIMING WAS FINE. REPLACED CAM AND CRANK SENSOR. STILL WOULDN'T START. THEY FINALLY CALLED US TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO OUR HOME BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER TOLD THEM IT WAS PROBABLY THE TIPM AND WIRING HARNESS. THEY TOLD US THE COST FOR THE PART AND TO INSTALL IT (WITH NO GUARANTEE IT WOULD FIX THE CAR) WAS $2,300 WHICH WE DON'T HAVE SO WE HAVE A VEHICLE THAT WE CAN'T EVEN START.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO LOOSE POWER. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY STATED THAT THE COILS AND SPARK PLUGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
THE ENGINE LIGHT COME ON AND STAY ON. THE ONLY TIME IT WILL GO OFF IN THE WINTER TIME. BUT WILL COME BACK ON ONCE THE WARM WEATHER COME. HAD IT TEST AND WAS TOLD A SPARK PLUG OR AROUND THE SPARK PLUG. I CHANGE ALL THE SPARK PLUG AND STILL ENGINE LIGHT COME ON. IT HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT 3 YRS.
I HAVE A 2007 JEEP LIBERTY AND @ 44,000 MILES I HAD TO HAVE THE COMPRESSOR REPLACED, THE AUTO SHOP STATED THAT THE WIRES BURNED OUT AND THIS STOP THE COMPRESSOR WORKING, I ASKED HOW THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THIS COULD HAVE NOT BEEN AVOIDED DUE TO THE WAY JEEP HAS THE COMPRESSOR HOUSED. I PURCHASED A NEW 2007 JEEP LIBERTY ON MARCH 19, 2007 IT HAD UNDER 20 MILES ON IT. AFTER LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP THE JEEP OVERHEATED ABOUT 15 MILES LATER. I PULLED OVER, POPPED THE HOOD, AND SAW THAT THE COOLANT OVERFLOW TANK WAS BONE DRY. IT TOOK ABOUT 1 GALLON OF COOLANT TO FILL THE TANK. WITHIN MINUTES OF FILLING THE TANK I HEARD A GURGLING NOISE WHEN I WOULD MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN. I DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME, SINCE IT WAS LATE AT NIGHT AND PARKED IT. THE FOLLOWING MORNING I POPPED THE HOOD AND NOTICED THAT THE COOLANT LEVEL HAD DROPPED. THIS CONTINUED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY AND THE FOLLOWING DAY. TWO DAYS AFTER I PURCHASED THE JEEP, ON MARCH 21, 2007, I BROUGHT THE JEEP BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. UPON INSPECTION THEY FOUND COOLANT IN THE ENGINE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND HAD A SERIOUS PROBLEM. THEY TOOK THE ENGINE APART, AND FOUND NOT ONLY A BLOWN HEAD GASKET, BUT ALSO A DEFECTIVE ENGINE BLOCK. THEY WERE IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING THE ENTIRE ENGINE. THE ORIGINAL ENGINE WAS SEVERELY DEFECTIVE AND COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. DAIMLER CHRYSLER WILL NOT EXTEND MY WARRANTY OR OFFER ANY SATISFACTORY CUSTOMER SERVICE REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. IN FACT, THEY WON'T EVEN DISCUSS IT WITH ME. THEY TOLD ME TO TALK TO THE DEALERSHIP. WHO ADVISED ME TO TALK TO CHRYSLER CORPORATION. I PUT A TOTAL OF 90 MILES ON A NEW VEHICLE IN 2 DAYS, AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT IN A WEEK DUE TO A FAILED ENGINE.*AK
SINCE I BOUGHT THE JEEP LIBERTY 2007 HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM. ALL THE OUTSIDE SMOKE ENTERS IN THE VEHICLE. WE TOOK IT TO THE CHRYSLER SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES BUT THEY SAID IT WAS FINE, BUT DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY. THIS INCONVENIENCE HAS AFFECTED US IN OUR HEALTH CAUSE EVERY AFTERNOON MY WIFE WHO DRIVES THE JEEP COME HOME WITH HEAD PAIN AND OUR DAUGHTER HAS ASTHMA AND THIS PROBLEM GET HER WORSE. LAST WEEK WE CALL TO THE CHRYSLER SERVICE AND EXPLAINED AGAIN WHAT WAS HAPPENING, THE MAN SAID THAT THEY NOTICE THAT THIS MODEL HAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT JUST AT THE SIDE OF THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM AND THERE WERE MORE PEOPLE REPORTING THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
MY JEEP LIBERTY SPORT CRD HAS 16000 MILES ON IT, AND SINCE NEW IT HAS HAD A SHUDDER OR STUMBLE FROM 50 TO 60 MPH. IT HAS HAD REPAIRS TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT IT STILL REMAIN TO THIS DAY. THIS PROBLEM CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO LOOSE CONTROL IN THE WINTER CONDITIONS IN MY AREA. WHICH CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO END UP IN THE DITCH. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE IF THERE WAS TRAFFIC AT THE TIME. *JB
