THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (55MPH) IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. RAPID DECELERATION AND MANY DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON. I WAS ABLE TO CHANGE TO THE RIGHT LANE AND THEN BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP ON THE SHOULDER SAFELY, AVOIDING AN ACCIDENT, AS THE CAR WAS IN RAPID DECELERATION AND STEPPING ON THE GAS WAS UNRESPONSIVE. THERE WAS NO ACCELERATION, OR ENGINE NOISE OR RESPONSE WHEN I STEPPED ON THE GAS PEDAL WHILE IN DRIVE POSITION AND THE KEY IN THE ON POSITION.I TURNED THE CAR OFF FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, WONDERING WHAT TO DO. I THEN TURNED THE KEY BACK ON, AND THE CAR WAS ABLE TO DRIVE. I TOOK SIDE ROADS HOME AND THEN SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT AT THE SELLING MANUFACTURER DEALERSHIP. THE DEFECT WAS IN THE THROTTLE BODY? THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE $500 REPAIR UNDER THE NEW VEHICLE WARRANTY (OUT ON TIME), THE $1700 EXTENDED WARRANTY I PURCHASED (NOT COVERED PART), THE EMISSIONS WARRANTY (NOT COVERED PART) OR THE HYBRID WARRANTY ( NOT COVERED PART), OR ANY RECALL, OR GOODWILL SERVICE PLAN OR SERVICE BULLETIN REPAIRS. THEN I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A SETTLEMENT WITH THE NHTSA FOR SIMILAR INCIDENTS THAT FORD AGREED TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THE THROTTLE BODY FOR 150,000 MILES OR 10 YEARS. (THIS VEHICLE IS A 2010 WITH JUST OVER 20,000 MILES. THEY SAID IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE SETTLEMENT BECAUSE IT A HYBRID AND THEY WERE NOT INCLUDED IN THE SETTLEMENT. I THINK THAT THIS PREMATURE FAILURE OF AN ITEM THAT THEY WILL REPLACE IF DEFECTIVE IN 150,000 MILES OR TEN YEARS AS PART OF A SETTLEMENT TO AVOID A RECALL AND ASSOCIATED PUBLIC DISCLOSURE, SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE AGREEMENT. I HAVE THE PART FROM THE DEALER. EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE FEWER HYBRIDS ON THE ROAD AS A STATISTIC, IT ONLY TAKES ONE FAILURE TO CAUSE A TRAGIC RESULT. I CAN SEND THE PART FOR INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE IF THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH SUPPLIERS AND PARTS IDENTIFIED PRIOR TO THE SETTLEMENT. *JS
TRAVELING TO ARMY NATIONAL GUARD DRILL DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS IS WHEN THIS OCCURED. I WAS GOING SPEED LIMIT WHILE TURNING RIGHT ONTO AN ONRAMP WHICH LEADS TO THE HIGHWAY. THERE WAS A WEIRD VIBRATION IN THE STERRING WHEEL AND IT FAILED AND COULD NOT BE TURNED BACK FROM THE RIGHT POSITION. I AM STRONG AND I COULD NOT MOVE IT. THIS MALFUNCTION CAUSE MY CAR TO SMASH INTO A TREE. I WAS KNOCKED OUT, HEAD INJRUY, AND VERY BAD BACK/SHOULDER INJURY. I WAS TAKEN BY 911 TO THE HOSPITAL AND I HAVE BEEN TREATED FOR MULTIPLE THINGS. FORD IS YET TO REPOND TO ANYTHING OR TO OFFER SOME SORT OF SETTLEMENT FOR THIS WHICH IS ABSOLUTLY THEIR FAULT. I HAVE GOT A LAWYER TO KEEP SENDING DEMANDS TO FORD. NOW, I SAW ON THE NEWS THAT THIS IS ACTUALLY A PROBLEM THEY ARE NOW FINDING OUT ABOUT AND CLAIMING NO ONE HAS BEEN SERIOUSLY HURT FROM IT...WELL THIS IS NOT TRUE AS I DID. I AM ALSO SEEKING A NEGLIGENCE CLAIM BECAUSE A WEEK PRIOR, THEY REPLACED A FAULTY TRANSMISSION IN MY CAR WHICH ALSO COULD HAVE LEAD TO THIS. HOPEFULLY YOUR AGENCY DOES SOME SERIOUS INVESTIGATION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 MERCURY MILAN HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AND AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND FAILED TO RESPOND. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
DRIVING 65 MPH ON INTERSTATE; CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING, STARTING DROPPING IN SPEED. PRESSED ACCELERATOR UNTIL ON FLOOR, WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, ONLY CONTINUED DECREASING IN SPEED. "WRENCH" INDICATOR APPEARED ON VEHICLE ELECTRONIC DASHBOARD. STOPPED. WHEN TURNED OFF AND BACK ON WRENCH WAS GONE, CAR WOULD ACCELERATE, BUT SEEMED TO BE "MISSING". TOOK TO DEALER FOR REGULAR OIL CHANGE AND MAINTENANCE, ASKED THEM TO CHECK. THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING. 4 DAYS AFTER GETTING IT CHECK SAME PROBLEM OCCUR ED. THEN 2 DAYS AFTER THAT IT OCCURRED AGAIN, AND BESIDES "WRENCH" LIGHT THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT ILLUMINATED. TOOK CAR INTO DEALER, IT IS STILL THERE. DEALER SAID THE THROTTLE BODY IS BAD, AND IT IS NOT COVERED. I FOUND WHERE FORD HAS HAD MULTIPLE PROBLEMS WITH THIS, AND ISSUED WARRANTY EXTENSIONS ON MERCURY MILAN, AND OTHER VEHICLES, FROM 2009-2013, BUT THEY ARE NOT SURE IT APPLIES TO MY VEHICLE. SERIOUSLY? SOUNDS CONSPICUOUS THAT MY CAR WOULD HAVE THAT VERY PROBLEM BUT IT WOULDN'T BE AN "ISSUE" THAT NEEDED RECALLING/OR FIXING UNDER WARRANTY! *TR
THE CAR WOULD INEXPLICABLY STOP DURING DRIVING AND DISPLAY THE RED TRIANGLE WITH THE MESSAGE STOP SAFELY INTERMITTENTLY SOON AFTER THE TIME IT WAS BOUGHT. BUT UPON TURNING IT OFF IT WOULD RESTART. THE DEALERSHIPS DID NOT FIND ANYTHING TO FIX. THE RED TRIANGLE DISPLAY AND SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING DEFECT STEADILY WORSENED AND BECAME SO FREQUENT THAT IT INTERFERED WITH DRIVING. BUT EACH TIME THE CAR WOULD RESTART AND DRIVE. IT WAS AGAIN REPORTED TO YOUR DEALERSHIP WHEN IT WAS BROUGHT IN FOR SERVICE AT ABOUT 48,000 MILES. AGAIN I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. ON JUNE 6, 2014 THE CAR COMPLETELY DIED ON A BUSY ROUTE. TWO GOOD SAMARITANS BEHIND ME STOPPED AND HELPED BRING THE TRAFFIC TO A HALT. THEN THEY HELPED PUSH THE DISABLED CAR ONTO A DRIVEWAY BEFORE PROCEEDING ON THEIR WAY. I ESCAPED SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH, WHICH MAY WELL HAVE RESULTED IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON A FREEWAY. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED IN AS IT BECAME NON-RESPONSIVE WITH NO POSSIBILITY OF RESTARTING IT. FORD CLARIFIED THAT THE HYBRID BATTERY CABLE IS TOO SHORT FOR THE ENGINE/TRANSAXLE MOVEMENT AND CAUSES THE HYBRID BATTERY TO BE DESTROYED AS WELL. NEITHER THE HYBRID BATTERY NOR THE HYBRID BATTERY CABLE ARE COVERED BY THE VARIOUS WARRANTIES FOR THIS DEFECT ACCORDING TO FORD. *JS
LED BRAKE LIGHT FLICKERS ON AND OFF. *TR
I WAS MERGING ONTO A HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 60 MPH. MY CAR SUDDENLY WENT INTO AN IDLE AND THE WRENCH ICON CAME ON IN THE INDICATOR DASH. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND NO VEHICLE WAS BEHIND ME. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND WAS THEN ABLE TO ACCELERATE. LATER IN THE DAY, I WAS AGAIN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 65 MPH. WHEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I THEN WENT DIRECTLY TO A FORD DEALER. THEY IMMEDIATELY KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND SAID FORD HAD EXTENDED THEIR WARRANTY ON THIS PROBLEM TO 120,000 MILES. THIS IS RIDICULOUS! I AM SURE SOMEONE WILL AND PROBABLY HAVE BEEN FATALLY INJURED BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE.THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL!! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 MERCURY MILAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000. UPDATED 8/12/14*CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE RIGHT STOP LIGHT WAS ALWAYS ON WITH THE TAIL LIGHT. THEN THE RIGHT SIDE LIGHT WENT OUT. UPDATED 09/23/14
THE PASSENGER SIDE LED TAIL LIGHT IS NO LONGER WORKING. THE CAR IS NOT EVEN 5 YEARS OLD YET. LEDS SHOULD NOT FAIL THIS QUICKLY SINCE THIS IS A CRITICAL SAFETY PART. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER MY FORD PREMIUM LEVEL EXTENDED WARRANTY. IT IS A COSTLY PART. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 TO 65MPH, THE CAR LOST POWER AND DECREASE SPEED WHILE MAINTAINING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, CAR WAS STILL RUNNING AND AFTER TURNING OFF AND RESTARTING AND ENTERING THE HIGHWAY AGAIN PROBLEM PERSISTED WITH THE SAME RESULTS. *TR
IT FIRST STARTED WITH THE PASSENGER REAR TAIL LIGHT. THE LED BRAKELIGHT FAILED, LED LIGHTS ARE KNOWN TO LAST FOR 20+ YEARS AND THESE LASTED ABOUT FOUR. AFTER THAT A BULB WENT OUT, WHEN THE BULB WAS REPLACED IT STILL DIDN'T RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THERE ARE TWO COMPONENTS TO THE TAIL LIGHT, AN INNER LIGHT ATTACHED TO THE REAR TRUNK AND A OUTER LIGHT ON THE ACTUAL REAR BODY. FIRST, THE INNER PASSENGER WENT OUT, THEN THE INNER DRIVER'S AND THEN THE OUTSIDE PASSENGER. NOW FINALLY, THE OUTSIDE DRIVER'S SIDE HAS STARTED FLICKERING. DOING MINOR GOOGLE SEARCHES IMMEDIATELY RETURNS RESULTS WITH OTHER VEHICLES HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
IMMEDIATELY AFTER ENTERING A MAIN HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE SEEMED TO DIE YET IDLED AROUND 1000 RPM. THE DASH LIGHTS CAME ON, THE ENGINE SPUTTERED, BUT WOULDN'T INCREASE SPEED AND VEHICLE WOULDN'T MOVE MORE THAN 2 OR 3 MILES PER HOUR. AFTER GETTING IT OFF ROAD AND TURNING IGNITION OFF FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES, IT STARTED AND DROVE FINE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 MERCURY MILAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT UNKNOWN SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME HARD TO TURN AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 104,000. UPDATED 7/14/14*CN
WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY, WARNING LIGHT CAME ON TO HAVE POWER STEERING SERVICED. NO PROBLEM STEERING THE CAR AT THAT TIME, BUT AFTER STOPPING AND TURNING OFF ENGINE, THE POWER ASSIST HAD BEEN DISABLED AND I COULD NOT STEER THE CAR. MANAGED TO GET IT TO A DEALER IN SENACA FALLS, NY, WHO RESET THE SYSTEM, BUT COULD NOT FIND CAUSE AND HE REFUSED TO CHARGE ME FOR THE WORK, AS I WAS TRAVELING ACROSS STATE AND HE DID NOT WANT LIABILITY IF SOMETHING HAPPENED. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT DEFECT IN STEERING AND THE RISK THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN TO ME WHILE DRIVING. *JS
I HAVE MERCURY MILAN AND I HAD AN ACCIDENT. A CAR WAS TURNING AND TURNED IN FRONT OF ME I SWERVED AND HIT THE CAR THAT WAS TURNING A STOP SIGN, STREET SIGN, AND A TREE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CAR WAS TOTALED. *TR
In April of 2014 I was driving down a major highway in Phoenix, AZ when suddenly the power steering on the car failed and I received a warning message from the car. I had taken the vehicle to Earnhardt Ford in Chandler, AZ twice prior to this incident and worked with service advisor Gina prior to this incident because the power steering had also stopped working previously but would start working again a few moments after turning on the ignition so Earnhardt Ford was unable to reproduce the issue. After the power steering failed in April 2014, I drove the car to San tan Ford in the gilbert, az area. After a few days, I was quoted a repair price of $7,000 to replace the steering rack entirely. I was told there was no way to repair individual parts in the rack and the whole thing had to be replaced. I had purchased the vehicle as a certified pre-owned car from Sanderson Ford of Glendale, AZ in October of 2012 with roughly 50,000 miles on it. By the time of the incident in April of 2014, the car had roughly 98,000 miles on it and San Tan Ford refused to repair the car under warranty. When I contacted my salesman who sold me the car at Sanderson, he said I that I should buy a pickup truck instead since that might be more reliable, and that was all he had to say about the situation. I sold the Mercury Milan on April 28 of 2014 and traded it in for another vehicle at Van Chevrolet of Scottsdale, AZ since the repair costs closely matched the value of the Milan even if it didn’t need repairs. In 2015, a recall was announced related to a power steering fault in mercury Milan’s. I strongly believe my vehicle was affected by this recall.

ADITIONALLY, THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE HAD RECEIVED A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION DIRECTLY RELATED TO FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 19,000.
I WAS ASKED TO PULL OVER BY A FRIEND WHO TOLD ME THE BRAKE LIGHTS WEREN'T ACTIVATING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. CENTER AND LEFT SIDE WERE OPERATIONAL. WHEN I TURN OFF THE HEADLIGHTS, THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE OPERATIONAL. AN OBVIOUS SYSTEM FAILURE WITHIN THE SEALED LIGHT. CANNOT REPLACE THIS LED LIGHT, THE ENTIRE TAIL LAMP UNIT MUST BE REMOVED. CHECKED WITH VARIOUS PARTS AND DEALERSHIP ($400+) SEEMS EXCESSIVE FOR A TAIL LIGHT THAT COSTS $2-3 IN AN ORDINARY TAIL LIGHT SYSTEM. *JS
DRIVER'S SIDE TAILLIGHT ILLUMINATES AS IF THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED THE ENTIRE TIME THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ON. *TR
I FELT A BIG JOLT AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD. IT FELT LIKE I HIT SOMETHING. MY SON EVEN GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND LOOKED UNDERNEATH. THEN THE NEXT DAY, AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF A GROCERY PARKING LOT, IT WAS REVVING UP BUT WOULDN'T GO, LIKE IT WASN'T IN GEAR. I STOPPED, PUT IT IN PARK FOR A MINUTE, THEN BACK TO DRIVE. IT STARTED GOING BUT HAPPENED AGAIN AT THE NEXT INTERSECTION. THIRD DAY, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY SAID IT NEEDED A COMPUTER UPDATE. LUCKILY, I DO HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, SO THERE WAS NO CHARGE. THAT WAS TWO DAYS AGO, AND IT SEEMS TO BE OKAY FOR NOW, BUT I'M SO AFRAID TO DRIVE IT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, AND I'M HESITANT NOW EVERY TIME I HAVE TO PULL INTO TRAFFIC WHEN LEAVING THE STORE OR MY NEIGHBORHOOD. *TR
IF HEADLIGHTS OR PARKING LIGHTS ARE ON, LEFT AND RIGHT STOP LIGHTS DO NOT CHANGE BRIGHTNESS WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THE BRAKE LIGHT IN THE REAR WINDSHIELD DOES COME ON AS IT SHOULD. *TR
ONE MONTH AFTER MY NHTSA COMPLAINT # 10563879, THE LEFT SIDE TAIL/BRAKE LIGHT SYSTEM IS NOW RESPONDING IN THE SAME MANNER. IE: BRAKE LIGHTS FUNCTION NORMALLY DURING THE DAY WITHOUT THE TAIL LIGHTS ON, BUT WHEN TAIL LIGHTS ARE ACTIVATED, THEY SHINE AT FULL 100% INTENSITY, AS IF THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. BRAKE APPLICATION IS NOW ONLY SHOWN BY THE SMALL THIRD CENTER LIGHT. WHENEVER I SEE A MILAN IN MY CITY AT NIGHT, WHICH IS THE ONLY TIME IT WILL BE EVIDENT, I TRY TO FOLLOW IT TO SEE IF IT HAS THIS ISSUE ALSO. I'LL FIND THAT USUALLY 1 OR BOTH OF THIS VEHICLES LIGHTS DO THIS, AND THE OWNERS DO NOT REALIZE IT. I FEEL THIS IS A WIDESPREAD SAFETY ISSUE, COMPOUNDED BY THE OWNER BEING UNAWARE OF A PROBLEM. NO DASH WARNING IS SHOWN. AND YES, FORD WANTS $400 FOR THIS LAMP. REPLACING IT IS THE ONLY FIX. *TR

THROTTLE BODY FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. CAR IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER AND HAD NO ACCELERATOR RESPONSE AND WOULD ONLY IDLE. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN DANGEROUS HAD THE VEHICLE NOT BEEN IN AN AREA WHERE IT WAS IMMEDIATELY SAFE TO PULL OVER. THROTTLE BODY WAS CHANGED, THE SECOND TIME IT'S HAPPENED TO THIS VEHICLE. *TR
WHEN TURNING ON THE HEADLIGHTS, THE LEFT AND RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT ILLUMINATE AS IF YOU ARE BRAKING. THEY REMAIN ON WITH NO DISCERNIBLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NON BRAKING AND BRAKING ACTIONS. THIS CAN LEAD TO A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD AND THE POTENTIAL TO BE REAR ENDED. THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY IN THESE MODELS IS FAULTY AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. FORD DOES NOT SEEM WILLING TO HELP WITH THIS MATTER. *TR
DUE TO A DEFECTIVE CONNECTION BOTH OF MY TAIL LIGHTS ARE OUT IN MY 2010 MERCURY MILAN. THE DEALER HAS TOLD ME THAT REPLACING THE WHOLE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY, AS THAT IS THE ONLY OPTION AT $400.00 A PIECE IS "NORMAL MAINTENANCE". WHEN I CONTACTED FORD I WAS TOLD THE SAME THING, THAT IT WAS NORMAL TO HAVE TO REPLACE TAIL LIGHTS. WHILE I AGREE, THESE ARE LED LIGHTS THAT HAVE A BAD CONNECTION AND FORD HAS HAD MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME ISSUE. FORD REFUSES TO FIX AN ISSUE THAT HAD TO DO WITH DEFECTIVE PARTS, THE COST AND THE FORDS REFUSAL TO FIX THIS ISSUE, EQUATES TO HUGE SAFETY ISSUES. *TR

THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND FORD REFUSES TO PAY ANYTHING. THIS CAR IS A 2010 MERCURY MILAN. IT IS MY FIRST FORD PRODUCT. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR BEGINS TO LOSE POWER. THEN THE CAR LOOSES THE ABILITY TO CONTROL IT AND APPEARS TO NOT HAVE ANY GAS GOING TO IT. THE WRENCH ON THE DASH BOARD APPEARS AND THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT. THE CAR APPEARS TO NOT BE GETTING ANY GAS. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOPPED THE CAR. AFTER IT SITS FOR A FEW MINUTES IT WILL START AGAIN. SOMETIMES IT STARTS UP AND DOESN'T HAPPEN FOR AWHILE. OTHER TIMES IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN IN A FEW MINUTES. IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED OR AT ANYTIME. MY SON WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED ON THE FREEWAY, WHICH PROMPTED MY INSPECTION OF OUR 2010 MERCURY MILAN. I FOUND THE BRAKE LIGHTS WORK AS THEY SHOULD IN DAYLIGHT. WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS COME ON THOUGH, THE RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT SHOWS THE BRAKE LIGHTS INTENSITY 100% OF THE TIME, AND IS UNAFFECTED BY BRAKE PEDAL APPLICATION. LEFT REAR BRAKE/TAIL LIGHT, AND UPPER 3RD BRAKE LIGHT OPERATE NORMALLY. I CONSIDER THIS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN, ESPECIALLY AFTER RESEARCHING THIS LED LIGHT SYSTEM. THIS VEHICLE SHOWS REPEATED WIDESPREAD INCIDENTS, EXACTLY AS I DESCRIBE. SOME PEOPLE REPORT BOTH LIGHTS MALFUNCTIONING. MY CONCERN IS THAT IT TAKES A THIRD PARTY TO TELL YOU THAT YOUR TAIL/BRAKE LIGHTS ARE NOT OPERATING CORRECTLY, SO MOST OWNERS WONT KNOW THEY HAVE A PROBLEM. THIS COULD BE MORE COMMON TO THIS VEHICLE THAN IT ALREADY APPEARS TO BE. I ONLY PERSONALLY KNOW ONE OTHER PERSON WITH THE SAME VEHICLE AND THEY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ! WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS SWITCH IS IN THE ON OR PARKING LIGHTS ONLY, THE RIGHT AND LEFT BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON AT FULL BRIGHTNESS. WHEN BRAKES PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, THERE IS NO CHANGE IN BRIGHTNESS OF RIGHT AND LEFT BRAKE LIGHTS AND THE CENTER REAR BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATES. WHEN THIS WAS TAKEN IN FOR A REQUIRED NY STATE INSPECTION, THE VEHICLE FAILED DUE TO THIS ISSUE. THE MECHANIC WORKING ON THE VEHICLE HAS STATED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED AND STATED THE COST WOULD BE IN EXCESS OF $1,000 TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT IS MOST LIKELY TO LEAD TO REAR END COLLISIONS AND IS COMMON IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT VEHICLES OF THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RECALLING VEHICLES OF THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE. *TR
DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD POWER STEERING WAS LOST AND CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WAS LOST CAUSING TO HIT A CURB DAMAGING RACK AND PINION TIE ROD ENDS, WHEELS AND TIRES AND ALIGNMENT. *TR
WHILE TRAVELING AT 55MPH MY VEHICLE STALLED, LOST ALL POWER AND CAME TO A STOP AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT WAS RESTARTED SEVERAL TIMES EACH TIME WITH THE WRENCH SYMBOL ILLUMINATED. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A THROTTLE BODY ISSUE WHICH I WILL BE EXPLAINING TO THE TECH'S WHEN I BRING IT IN FOR REPAIR. AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE FOR THE OCCUPANTS OF THIS CAR AND OTHER CARS INVOLVED IF AN ACCIDENT WERE TO OCCUR. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING AT NIGHT, AT A SPEED OF 30 MPH. I HEARD A BELL AND LOOKED AT MY DASH AND SAW A MESSAGE THAT SAID POWERTRAC SERVICE NOW. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY FAILED BUT DID NOT HAVE A CLEAR DIAGNOSIS HOW IT FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000.
DRIVING THRU TOWN AT APPROX 30 MPH THE VEHICLES WARNING LIGHTS FLASHED FOR CHECK ENGINE AND THE THROTTLE CONTROL WARNING (WRENCH) ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND TO ANY ACTIVATION OF THE GAS PEDDLE AND DRIFTED TO IDLE POWER. NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT WENT WRONG, I SHUT THE CAR DOWN AND RESTARTED IT TO CLEAR THE FAULTS. I RE-ENTERED TRAFFIC AND PROCEEDED ABOUT 50 FT BEFORE IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I PROCEEDED TO FOLLOW THE SAME RESET PROCESS AND WAS ABLE TO LIMP THE CAR HOME. THE CAR WAS TOWED AWAY AND REPAIRED BY REPLACING THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT SINCE 2004 FORD HAS KNOWN THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS AND THAT THE ENGINE DESIGN DEFAULT IS TO BRING THE CAR DOWN TO IDLE POWER. INTERNET CHAT BOARDS HAVE STORIES OF THIS HAPPENING ON HIGHWAYS AT HIGH RATES OF SPEED. FORD CLAIMS THERE IS NO RECALL BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT (YOU GUYS) HAVE NOT REQUIRED THEM TO DO SO DESPITE THE FAILURE MODE, AND PUBLIC SAFETY IMPLICATIONS, BEING EXACTLY THE SAME AS NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE13031. FORD FIXED THE PROBLEM RECENTLY BUT DID NOT SCRAP OLD DEFECTIVE INVENTORY AND REFUSES TO FIX THOSE SUSPECT PARTS ON OUR ROADS. THEY HAVE CALCULATED THE COSTS AND CHOOSE TO RISK PUBLIC SAFETY INSTEAD OF A RECALL. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT ABOUT 60 MPH WHEN MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST ALL DRIVE POWER WITHOUT WARNING. I MANAGED TO COAST TO THE SNOW-COVERED RIGHT SHOULDER. WHEN I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, IT WAS SHUDDERING AND THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON. I TURNED THE CAR OFF FOR A MINUTE AND THEN TURNED IT BACK ON. THE CAR SEEMED TO DRIVE OK THEN, BUT I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND LEARNED THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC CODES INDICATED A FAILURE IN THE THROTTLE BODY. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 50MPH WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY STARTED TO LOSE POWER AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCELERATE--CAR WAS COASTING. THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME AS WELL. I TURNED ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. BACK TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY (LED PANEL) OF THE 2010 MILAN IS FAULTY. SOME LIGHTS WOULD NOT LIGHT UP AT ALL AND AT ONE POINT SOMEONE REPORTED NONE WERE LIGHTING UP. THE CAR WAS JUST OVER THE WARRANTY WITH ONLY 16,000 MILES. CHECKING ONLINE IT APPEARS THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL AND YEAR CAR AND MANY HAVE EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM WITH LOW MILEAGE EVEN WITH REPLACEMENT PANELS (AT UPWARDS OF $400 FOR THE PART). SINCE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR A DRIVER TO KNOW IF/WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE OR ARE NOT WORKING - IT IS A SERIOUS DANGER FOR ANYONE DRIVING BEHIND A MILAN. THIS HAPPENED AT A LIGHT IN A MAJOR AND VERY BUSY INTERSECTION. I WENT AND THE CAR DID NOT MOVE AND ALMOST GOT REAR-ENDED. IT ADDITIONALLY OVER EXCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED TO DEALER AS THE CAR DIED DUE TO FAILED THROTTLE. *TT
WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE ON (AT NIGHT), THE REAR LIGHTS ARE CONTINUOUSLY AT THEIR HIGHEST BRIGHTNESS, AS IF THE BRAKES WERE PRESSED DOWN. SO, IT APPEARS THAT THE BRAKES ARE ON CONTINUOUSLY. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED DOWN IS THAT THE CENTRAL LIGHT HIGH UP ON THE TRUNK TURNS ON. THIS IS ONLY AN ISSUE AT NIGHT- DURING THE DAY THE BRAKE LIGHTS FUNCTION NORMALLY. BASED ON INTERNET FORUMS AT EDMUNDS AND CONSUMER REPORTS, AMONG OTHERS, I HAVE FOUND AT LEAST 10 OTHER INSTANCES OF THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH 2010 MERCURY MILANS, MOST WITH LOW MILEAGE: E.G. 2010 MERCURY MILAN WITH 3.0 LITER V-6 BUILD DATE MARCH 2010. CAR WENT INTO LIMITED LIMP MODE WHILE IT WAS BEING DRIVEN AT LESS THAN 30 MPH. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON THREE OCCASIONS. EACH TIME THE ENGINE DROPS TO A ROUGH IDLE AT 500 TO 900 RPM AND THE "WRENCH" LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED. ENGINE DOES NOT RESPOND TO THROTTLE INPUT. CAR SPEED DROPS DRASTICALLY BUT STEERING AND BRAKES APPEAR TO OPERATE NORMALLY. (ENGINE IS STILL RUNNING AN CLOSE TO NORMAL IDLE SPEEDS.) ENGINE DOES NOT PRODUCE ENOUGH POWER TO GO UP THE SLIGHTEST OF INCLINES. AFTER RESTARTING, THE ENGINE THE CONDITION CLEARS AND CAR DRIVES NORMALLY. PORTABLE OBDII SCAN TOOLS DO NOT INDICATE ANY DTC CODES. DEALER REPLACED THROTTLE BODY MECHANISM DUE TO AN INTERMITTENT SHORT IN THE POSITION SENSING CIRCUIT. DEALER KEPT OLD UNIT DUE TO CORE CHARGE. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN IN THAT UNDER MANY TRAFFIC CONDITIONS THE CAR MAY BE HIT FROM BEHIND OR UNABLE TO MOVE TO A SAFE SHOULDER OUT OF THE TRAFFIC FLOW.

THE RESULT OF THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS THERE WAS A CODE STORED IN SYSTEM OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY. IT WAS GIVING A CODE FOR BEING STUCK OPEN WHEN IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN. IT WAS A FAILED COMPONENT. WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH HEADLIGHTS ON ND WAS REAR ENDED DUE TO THE OTHER DRIVER KNOWING I WAS STOPPING. THE OTHER DRIVER WAS HURT ALONG WITH HER PASSENGER. NEXT MORNING TO VEHICLE IN TO DEALERSHIP WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A HEADLIGHT CONTROL SWITCH AND AN REAR TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLIES. NOT BULBS BUT ASSEMBLED AS THESE ARE LED. 435$ FOR EACH TAILLIGHT AND 50 FOR CONTROL SWITCH. *TR
I NOTICED ON DECEMBER 2, 2013 (MAY HAVE BEEN HAPPENING SOONER), THAT WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED, THE TAIL LIGHT LIGHT BLINKED ON AND OFF AND AT TIMES STAYED OFF, BUT THEN WENT BACK TO BLINKING. THERE ISN'T A BULB THAT CAN BE REPLACED. THE WHOLE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY HAS TO BE REPLACED, WHICH IS COSTLY. *TR
