TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT WAS ACCELERATING 5 MPH FROM A TRAFFIC STOP WHEN THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND LEFT. ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER IN REGARDS TO AN UNUSUAL RUMBLING IN THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS LEAKING INTO THE RADIATOR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 58,500.
IN SEPTEMBER, 2010 I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 NISSAN XTERRA AT 55 MPH ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY WHEN IT THE TEMPERATURE SPIKED OVERHEATING THE ENGINE AFTER PULLING OVER AND CHECKING IT I DISCOVERED I HAD TRANSMISSION FLUID IN THE RADIATOR. COME TO FIND OUT THERE IS A KNOWN DEFECT ON 2005 THRU 2010 NISSAN XTERRA'S, PATHFINDERS, AND FRONTIER'S IN WHICH THE RADIATORS INTERNALLY LEAK WATER INTO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS AND CAUSES THE VIOLENT SHAKING AT HIGH SPEEDS. NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND HAS ONLY CHOSEN TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THE RADIATORS AND NOT RECALL THE VEHICLES. IN FACT THE LETTER SENT TO THE CONSUMERS DOESN'T EVEN REFERENCE THE TRANSMISSION (IN WHICH IT DESTROYS). WHILE MY FAMILY AND I WERE NOT HURT, IT WAS A CLOSE CALL AND COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN WORSE AT THE SPEED I WAS GOING AND THE EFFECT THE FAILURE HAS ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A GARAGE AND THE RADIATOR REPLACED AND TRANSMISSION FLUSHED. WHILE SERVICING MY VEHICLE THE MECHANIC DISCOVERED THAT THE ENGINE HEAD HAD CRACKED. I INCURRED OVER 2,400 DOLLARS IN REPAIRS...USING A USED REPLACEMENT ENGINE. NISSAN CORPORATION AFTER 9 WEEKS OF WAITING HAS INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAVE OPTED NOT TO ASSIST IN THE REPAIR OF THE VEHICLE NOR PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT. ON JUNE 23, 2011, MY TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO FAIL. *TR
PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED BY NISSAN SERVICE TECH: XTERRA WAS TOWED TO US WITH THE CONCERN "MY XTERRA IS SLIPPING, WILL NOT GO BACKWARDS, WILL NOT DRIVE IN DRIVE, ONLY DRIVE IN 3RD, HOOKED UP TO COMPUTER AND CAME UP P1716". WE CONFIRMED THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE IN REVERSE, AS IT WAS TOWED IN AND PARKED SO THAT BACKING UP WAS THE ONLY OPTION. THE CODE P1716 IS RELATED TO THE TRANSMISSION TURBINE CIRCUIT NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. UPON FURTHER DIAGNOSIS, WE REMOVED THE RADIATOR CAP TO FIND THE RADIATOR FILLED WITH THE MILKY COMBINATION OF COOLANT AND TRANSMISSION FLUID. THE RADIATOR IS A SUB-LEVEL RADIATOR, WHERE THE TOP PORTION IS FOR COOLANT AND THE BOTTOM PORTION IS FOR COOLING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. THE RADIATOR CRACKED INTERNALLY CAUSING THE FLUIDS TO MIX. THE TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR NEED TO BE REPLACED TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEMS. NEW TRANSMISSION IS $3215.71 WITH THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL DATE OF TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21. THE NEW RADIATOR IS $538, CURRENTLY IN STOCK. THE LABOR ESTIMATE IS $1442.70. THE ESTIMATED COMPLETION OF WORK IS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, WITH ESTIMATED TOTAL BILL COMING TO $5560.16 TAX INCLUDED. *TR
CAR OVERHEATING, WOULDN'T RUN ON HIGHWAY, JERKING, COULDN'T CATCH SPEED, RADIATOR BLEW DUE TO COOLANT PROBLEM WHICH WENT INTO TRANSMISSION NEEDING NEW TRANSMISSION. HOLDING UP TRAFFIC, HAD TO KEEP MY HAZARDS ON. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. RADIATOR REIMBURSED BY NISSAN BUT WOULDN'T PAY FOR TRANSMISSION DESPITE CLEAR DOCUMENTATION THAT IT WAS DUE TO A RECALL. HAD TO PULL OVER SEVERAL TIMES ON HIGHWAY TO GET OUT OF HARMS WAY. *TR
THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR ON MY 2005 NISSAN XTERRA STOPPED WORKING AS I WAS DRIVING TO WORK. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS $500 TO FIX THE SENSOR WHICH WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND RECALLED ON EARLIER AND LATER MODELS OF THIS TRUCK. AND IS ALSO A COMMON PROBLEM FOR OTHER XTERRA OWNERS. PLEASE RECALL THIS PART. FUEL LEVEL SENSORS LAST MUCH LONGER THAN THIS IS OTHER MAKES AND MODELS OF VEHICLES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSIS. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT ANTI-FREEZE WAS LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE BECAUSE THE INTAKE VALVE GASKET WAS BENT. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VALVE GASKET WAS BENDING BECAUSE THE INTAKE VALVE AND RADIATOR WERE MADE OF PLASTIC. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 95,000. UPDATED 05/03/11*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED DUE THE DEFECT WITH THE RADIATOR, ANTI-FREEZE LEAKED INTO THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION TO FAIL. UPDATED 08/04/11
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING THE FUEL PRESSURE TO FLUCTUATE ABNORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT SHORTLY AFTER REPAIRS, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AND WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE IPDM WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED YET THE FAILURE RECURRED TWENTY MINUTES AFTER REPAIRS WITH THE ILLUMINATION OF THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT. THE DEALER THEN ADVISED THAT BECAUSE THE IPDM FAILED, IT ALSO CAUSED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER TO FAIL AND THAT WOULD ALSO TO BE REPLACED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE REPAIR WOULD REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TRADE THE VEHICLE IN. THE VEHICLE WAS TRADED IN NOVEMBER 2010. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, SHE HEARD A RUMBLING SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS, WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT RADIATOR FLUID LEAKED INTO THE TRANSMISSION AND THE RADIATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WERE ALSO PARTS WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION THAT NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED, BUT THE CONTACT WAS UNAWARE OF THE SPECIFIC PARTS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
FILLED UP GAS TANK & CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. AUTOZONE DID A DIAGNOSTIC & FOUND PO463. MY WIFE HAS NOTICED ERRATIC FUEL-GAUGE OPERATION FOR SOME TIME, BUT ONLY MENTIONED IT SINCE THE CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. SHE HAS ALSO NOTICED THE MILEAGE DISPLAYED HAS NOT AGREED WITH THE DISPLAYED FUEL-LEVEL, WHICH SHE THOUGHT SOMETHING HAD HAPPENED THAT CHANGED HER GAS MILEAGE...WHICH HAD NOT. WE DRIVE THIS VEHICLE MAINLY ON THE FREEWAY, AS MY WIFE IS A COLLEGE STUDENT IN THE RN PROGRAM. IN OUR LOCATION, SHE DRIVES ALONG WITH MAY SEMI-TRUCKS GOING TO/FROM CANADA. HAVING OUR VEHICLE RUN OUT OF GAS ON THIS FREEWAY, WITH THE AMOUNT OF TRUCKS PER HR COULD BE DEVASTATING, IF ATTEMPTING TO GET TO A SHOULDER SAFELY. WE HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE NEW. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE THAT WE MUST RELY ON FAULTY FACTORY INSTRUMENTATION. OTHER YEARS HAVE THIS SAME DEFECT & HAVE BEEN RECALLED. ARE WE WAITING FOR THE DEATH TOLL TO INCREASE BEFORE ACTING ON SOMETHING THAT IS SUCH AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM THAT CAN FAIL & CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO STALL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS? RADIATOR COOLING SYSTEM FOR TRANSMISSION FLUID CAUSES MALFUNCTION OF TRANSMISSION CAUSING UNPREDICTABLE SHIFTING AND ACCELERATION / DECELERATION NISSAN DEALERSHIP CHARGING CUSTOMERS OVER 900 DOLLARS FOR REPAIRS......KNOWINGLY THIS ENGINEERED DEFECT EXISTS WITH MOST 2005 NISSAN XTERRA VEHICLES. *TR
2005 NISSAN XTERRA FUEL SENDING UNIT HAS GONE BAD. VEHICLE HAS ~44,000. VEHICLE INSTRUMENT PANEL SHOWS NO GAS IN VEHICLE AFTER FILLED WITH GAS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS WHERE THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT THE VALVE BODY WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE RADIATOR WAS CRACKED AND FLOODED THE VALVE BODY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED AFTERWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
IN THE PAST MONTH I HAVE EXPERIENCED A SERIES OF ANOMALIES WITH MY FUEL GAUGE. I INITIALLY NOTICED THIS WHEN I COMPLETELY REFILLED MY GAS TANK ONLY TO NOTICE THAT THE GAUGE SHOWED 7/8THS FULL. IT SEEMED ODD, BUT I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS AN ISSUE AS THE PUMP MAY HAVE AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF PREMATURELY. TURNS OUT TO NOT BE THE CASE. ON MY NEXT TRIP TO THE GAS STATION, UPON REFILLING THE GAS TANK, MY GAUGE ONLY READ A HALF TANK. UPON MY NEXT TRIP IN THE VEHICLE, THE GAUGE READ PROPERLY. HOWEVER, SUBSEQUENT TRIPS THE GAUGE READ SOMETIMES MORE THAN IT SHOULD AND SOMETIMES LESS THAN IT SHOULD. FOR EXAMPLE, AFTER GOING 78 MILES THE GAUGE STILL READ "FULL", AND THEN AFTER GOING 96 MILES THE GAUGE READ "HALF FULL". AFTER REFILLING THE GAS TANK THIS LAST TIME, THE GAUGE READ 3/4 OF A TANK. THE NEXT TRIP THE GAUGE READ "FULL". SUBSEQUENT TRIPS THE GAUGE READS SOMETIMES MORE THAN IT SHOULD AND SOMETIMES LESS THAN IT SHOULD. THE LAST COUPLE OF TRIPS THE GAUGE SHOWED THE SAME AMOUNT EACH TIME EVEN THOUGH I HAVE DRIVEN MORE THAN 60 MILES. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST NISSAN DEALER (WHERE I'VE HAD SERVICE PERFORMED BEFORE) TO CHECK FOR A RECALL AS I HAD HEARD THERE WERE VEHICLES WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. APPARENTLY, NISSAN HAS ISSUED THE RECALL FOR "SOME" MODELS AND YEARS BUT NOT FOR MINE. THEY OFFERED TO "DIAGNOSE" THE PROBLEM, FOR THEIR USUAL SHOP FEE NATURALLY. YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT LIMITED TO THE MODEL YEARS ALLOWED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE BEEN READING ON ONLINE FORUM WITH MANY 2005 XTERRAS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME ISSUE. I AM LESS THAN PLEASED WITH THE RESPONSE FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO DIAGNOSE A KNOWN PROBLEM; MUCH LESS PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED. I AM ISSUING THIS COMPLAINT IN HOPES THAT YOU WILL DO THE RIGHT THING AND REALIZE THE EXTENT OF THIS PROBLEM AND INCLUDE THE 2005 MODEL YEAR IN THE EXISTING RECALL. *TR

I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA THAT HAS AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THE GAS GAUGE TAKES A LONG TIME TO REGISTER THAT THE TANK IS FULL AND NOW THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. I HAVE READ MANY FORUMS WHERE PEOPLE WITH BOTH THE XTERRA AND PATHFINDER ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THEY DID A RECALL ON THE 2001-2003 XTERRA FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. HOW IS THIS NOT A RECALL. THIS IS AN EXPENSE THAT OWNERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BEAR AS IT IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. CONSUMERS NEED HELP WITH THIS ISSUE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE SENSOR WAS READING INACCURATELY AND SHE WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH GASOLINE WAS ACTUALLY IN THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE WAS SIMILAR TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V075000 ( FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:AUXILLARY TANK). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND CONCLUDED THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT INFORMED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT SINCE THE VEHILCE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
"I HAD 1/4 OF A TANK OF GAS AND WENT TO FILL UP. AFTER FILLING UP MY GAS TANK, I TURNED ON THE CAR, AT WHICH POINT THE NEEDLE DID NOT REGISTER THE FULL TANK. AFTER DRIVING A COUPLE MILES, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WENT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A FUEL SENDING UNIT/SENSOR AND THAT IT WAS NO LONGER COVERED AFTER 30K MILES. AFTER RETURNING HOME AND DOING RESEARCH, I WENT ONLINE TO X.NISSANHELP.COM AFTER PERFORMING A SEARCH, I CAME ACROSS MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. APPARENTLY IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. A SIMILAR PROBLEM WAS FOUND ON THE 2000-2004 XTERRA MODELS AND A RECALL WAS PERFORMED WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP AFTER NOT GETTING ANY FUEL, POSING A GREAT DANGER. IT SEEMS THAT SOMETHING IN THE UNIT IS FAULTY AND WILL CORRODE OVER TIME. THERE IS A GENERAL CONSENSUS THAT EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING THE PROBLEM IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR OVER 2 YRS AND WITH AROUND 30K-49K. IF THIS PROBLEM EXISTED IN PREVIOUS MODELS, AND IT WAS RECALLED, THE 2005-2007 XTERRAS, FRONTIERS, AND PATHFINDERS SHOULD GET THIS FIXED AT NO CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER!! WHY WAIT FOR ACCIDENTS AND POSSIBLE DEATHS, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE PROBLEM LIES IN AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE VEHICLE. COST OF REPAIR RANGES FROM $300-600." *TR
I HAD LESS THAN 1/4 OF A TANK OF GAS, WHEN THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. ON MY WAY HOME, I STOPPED BY AUTO ZONE AND HAD THE CODE CHECKED. IT CAME UP WITH PO463, WHICH INDICATED THE FUEL SENDING SENSOR. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AND FILLED UP. THE GAUGE APPEARED TO GO TO FULL. UPON SEARCHING THE INTERNET I FOUND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND WAS RECALLED ON SEVERAL NISSAN MODELS BETWEEN 2000-2004. I TALKED TO THE DEALER, BUT SINCE MY 5 YEAR WARRANTY EXPIRED THIS MONTH AND I HAVE 63,000 MILES ON MY XTERRA, THE REPAIR WOULDN'T BE COVERED. THE COST OF REPAIR WOULD BE AROUND $600 - $700. I DECIDED TO JUST KEEP UP WITH MY MILEAGE TO MAKE SURE I DON'T RUN OUT OF GAS. SINCE THEN I HAVE DRIVEN 270 MILES. THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT WENT OFF AROUND 200 MILES, BUT I AM STILL NERVOUS THAT THE UNIT IS MALFUNCTIONING AND IT COULD REOCCUR. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT IF THIS PROBLEM WAS RECALLED IN PREVIOUS MODELS, AND IT WAS CONSIDERED A SAFETY HAZARD THAT COULD RESULT IN A MAJOR TRAFFIC ACCIDENT, WHY ISN'T IS BEING RECALLED ON THE 2005-2007 MODELS? *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH THE SUN VISOR ON BOTH THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE HAD FALLEN ALMOST CAUSING A CRASH TO OCCUR. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE SUN VISOR REPLACED AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT STATED THIS WAS A SAFETY DEFECT AND WANTS THE MANUFACTURER BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 151,000.
WENT TO THE GAS STATION TO FULL UP MY XTERRA. WHEN I STARTED IT BACK UP THE GAUGE READ 1/4 OF A TANK. I WENT BACK THROUGH THE LINE AND GOT ONLY $1.00 MORE WORTH OF GAS BEFORE THE ATTENDANT SAID IT WAS COMPLETELY FULL. OVER THE DAY THE GAUGE STARTED TO CREEP BACK UP UNTIL IT READ FULL. ONE DAY LATER THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK IT TO KNECHT'S TO HOOK IT TO THE DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE. CAME BACK ERROR CODE PO463 "FUEL LEVEL SENSOR A CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT." APPARENTLY THIS HAS HAPPENED TO NUMEROUS XTERRA AND PATHFINDER OWNERS AROUND THE 44000 MILE MARK OR THE 57000 MILE MARK. MY XTERRA JUST TURNED OVER 44,000 MILES. *TR
THE FUEL SENSOR/SENDING UNIT ON MY 2005 NISSAN XTERRA HAS FAILED AND NOW MY GAS GAUGE DOES NOT REGISTER A FULL TANK AND MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON. THIS IS APPARENTLY AN EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE AND COMMON FAILURE FOR THE XTERRA AND THIS SAME PART WAS RECALLED ON THE 2004 MODEL. *TR
2005 NISSAN XTERRA FAULTY RADIATOR DESTROYS TRANSMISSION. I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA WHICH I PURCHASED NEW IN JANUARY OF 2006. MY TRANSMISSION JUST FAILED AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THE RADIATOR FLUID WAS MIXED WITH THE TRANSMISSION FLUID BECAUSE THE RADIATOR FAILED. THE SYSTEM BEGAN STALLING ON SUNDAY AND AS I PRESSED THE GAS THE RPM WOULD INCREASE BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE NISSAN DEALER ON MONDAY AND THEY THOUGHT IT WAS NOT THE TRANSMISSION BUT THE IPDM. IT WORKED FOR THEM FINE AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME FINE. AS I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE TO WORK ON TUESDAY THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO MY DRIVEWAY. ON WEDNESDAY I BARELY MADE IT TO THE NISSAN DEALER AND THE BY THE TIME I ARRIVED THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER GO IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. I RECEIVED A CALL STATING THAT IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION AND UPON FURTHER INQUIRY LEARNED THAT THE RADIATOR HAD GONE OUT AND LEAKED FLUID INTO THE TRANSMISSION - AT NO FAULT OF MY OWN. I'VE SINCE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND SEE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY PEOPLE THAT OWN THE 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR NISSAN THAT HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED. 2005 NISSAN XTERRA WITH 69000 MILES BEGAN SHUTTERING EVERY NOW AND AGAIN WHEN DRIVING AROUND TOWN. IT STARTED GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE DURING THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE TIRE BALANCE AND HAD IT CHECKED. BALANCED THE TIRES, THE SHUTTERING WAS STILL THERE AND BEGAN TO GET WORSE WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEEDS I.E. 60MPH. THE REAR END WOULD SHUTTER VERY HARD TO THE POINT WHERE WE COULDN'T DRIVE IT ANY LONGER. TAKING IT TO THE SHOP REVEALED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD RADIATOR FLUID IN IT WHICH WAS CAUSED BY CRACKED RADIATOR LINES LEAKING INTO THE TRANSMISSION. THE FLUID WAS INTO ALL THE TRANSMISSION GEARS. COME TO FIND OUT THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH NISSANS AND THE ONLY WAY TO GET AROUND THIS PROBLEM IS TO PLACE AN EXTERNAL COOLER TO THE TRANSMISSION. SINCE THE 5YR/60K POWER TRAIN WARRANTY RAN OUT, NISSAN HAS NO INTEREST IN ASSISTING A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM OF THEIRS. THERE COMPLAINT DEPT TAKES THE INFO AND PLACES IT INTO A DATABASE. 2005 NISSAN XTERRA HAS A PART WHICH ALLOWS THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO PASS THROUGH AND BE COOLED IN THE RADIATOR. THIS PART BREAKS, ALLOWING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND RADIATOR COOLANT TO MIX. THIS RUINS YOUR RADIATOR, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT BURNS UP YOUR TRANSMISSION, BECAUSE THE COOLANT RELEASED INTO THE TRANSMISSION THROUGH THE BUSTED LINE DOES NOT HAVE THE CONSTANCY TO LUBRICATE THE TRANSMISSION PARTS PROPERLY. OVER A VERY SHORT PERIOD YOUR TRANSMISSION IS RUINED. I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE TRANSMISSION HAD VIBRATION INTERMITTENTLY. TRANSMISSION FINALLY WENT OUT DUE TO A FAULTY RADIATOR. THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH TWO COOLERS ONE AIR AND ONE WATER COOLED. I HAVE READ OF MANY COMPLAINTS FOR THIS. NISSAN KNOWS OF THE PROBLEM AND SHOULD RECALL IT.
