NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Data synced from NHTSA on May 4, 2026
Timeline of issues: 04/11/2026 – Vehicle purchased 04/16/2026 – Brakes began grinding 04/18/2026 – Vehicle developed starting issues 04/19/2026 – Brake system parts (pads, rotors, calipers) ordered due to failure 04/23/2026 – Parts received; same day 4WD was tested and confirmed not functioning properly (dashboard indicates engagement but front wheels do not engage) 04/24/2026 – Complete brake failure occurred due to caliper failure These issues occurred immediately after purchase and indicate the vehicle had significant pre-existing mechanical defects at the time of sale. The 4WD system also does not function correctly despite indicating engagement, and the braking system failed completely shortly after purchase.
Steering has become hard and pulsates at times. Feels unsafe when turning at intersections. Steering issue is unpredictable and dangerous. (many other RAM 1500 drivers seem to have this issue per RAM forums). Fix is to replace entire rack and pinion system which is not acceptable. This is something that should last life of the vehicle. ~$4,000 fix is very hard to swallow.
Power Steerin EPS went out, causin loss of control of truck
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 45 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality with the steering assist warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. The dealer associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V198000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the VIN was not associated with the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 177,000.
EPS rack and pinion failing at 140,000km. Steering gets tight when driving long distances and at higher speeds. Intermittent loss of power steering happening daily. This is super concerning safety wise as this happened when i was on the highway and could have been a serious accident. Not to mention I have to pay over $4000.00 to have this repaired.
Electronic Power Steering (EPS) failure resulting in loss of control of vehicle.
Received an error on the dash for Service Electronic Braking System and ABS System. Took to a mechanic and it is a failure of the Anti-Lock Brake Module. This is the same failure they are recalling other Ram trucks for already. I am not sure why the Ram 1500 is not included in the recall also.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. While the vehicle was at a dealer for routine maintenance, the contact was informed that the fuel system was fractured and rusted. The dealer attributed the failure to corrosion. The vehicle remained at the dealer, and the failure was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V160000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); however, neither the VIN nor the model year was included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 57,969.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle unexpectedly failed to shift into gear properly, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stopped, after depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle unexpectedly reversed. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and shut off, the vehicle unexpectedly started rolling away while parked on a hill at the residence, and the parking brake was engaged. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and DTC: P0814-000; for transmission failure was retrieved. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 214,000.
Electronic Power Steering just stopped all of a sudden while I was going up the mountain into North Carolina that almost caused an accident the only reason it didn’t is because of the pull off right after the curve I was going through when I lost all steering! With the truck already in the pull off I stopped to see if I had lost a serpentine belt unaware this Ram is equipped with the EPS System. I had no phone service luckily someone came by when they did because of the snow storm seeing vehicles was few and far between! After letting the truck sit for about 20mins with the positive cable unhooked I started the truck and had steering again. So the nice gentleman that stopped said he would follow me to the nearest cell service area so I could call someone, No warning light the first time at all the second time the only warning light was service ABS system which shouldn’t affect having power steering. So I repeated the steps as I did the first time and had steering again the service ABS System light was gone and we made it 11 Minutes up the mountain before it happened again only this time all kinds of service lights came on all at once, Service Electronic brake system,Service ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM, SERVICE ELECTRONIC SHIFTER, SERVICE POWER STEERING SYSTEM, traction control was disabled which isn’t good in snowy weather conditions and i had no choice but to continue 3mins to the next town with no power steering no traction control and all these other warning lights because it wouldn’t fix it anymore temporarily by in hooking the positive battery cable and waiting 20 minutes which I attempted 3 times with no success once we reached the town I was able to call and have someone come pick me and my truck up and brought a scan tool I cleared the codes only for them to come right back as soon as I would crank the truck! Had it professionally scanned with same results! Very dangerous issue! Yes it can be inspected yes professionally inspected $2300part only not labor to!
1Rear end shifted to passenger side 3 in 2. The intermittent shaft made the steering wheel over turn over half a turn. 3 manifold bolts replaced but snapped again. Fuel pump went out. Tailgate has opened multiple times. 120 k seems unfit to drive wheel studs drivers rear broke off 1 by 1 till there were 2 left
The Coolant liquid is absorved with no external leaking. There is an active Recall (19V-757, FCA Recall VB1) that the dealer said fits perfectly my vehicle but for some reason my VIN# is not included under the recall and they can not do anything unless I pay them.
Randomly received a “service power steering” message on dash. RAM dealership is saying I need a whole new rack and pinon.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 MPH, several unknown transmission codes were displayed on the instrument panel, and the vehicle went into LIMP Mode. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that a transmission flush was needed. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the power steering rack had short-circuited and needed to be replaced. The contact researched and was made aware of an unknown NHTSA recall; however, the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,455.
I have been told that I need to replace the ABS module. It is causing my trailer brakes not to work, the ABS is not working, and the Anti-Sway is not working. The dealership told me that the part has been back order for over a year. I do not feel that the vehicle is safe to use and we cannot pull our camping trailer with the vehicle. I cannot find a solution other than to trade in the vehicle, which I am not really in the market for a new vehicle. What can I do?
I was driving on Interstate 20 in the third lane from the right of four total lanes when my truck suddenly lost all propulsion while attempting to pass another vehicle. The engine did not shut off, but it immediately dropped to very low RPM and the accelerator pedal no longer controlled the vehicle’s power. Multiple engine warning lights illuminated at the same time. I immediately activated my hazard lights and attempted to maneuver the vehicle across traffic to reach the shoulder. Because the vehicle had no propulsion, this created a dangerous situation in active interstate traffic. Several vehicles had to take evasive action and I experienced multiple near-collisions while trying to reach the shoulder. After safely stopping, I had the vehicle towed to my home and later towed again to the dealership at my own expense. The day before this incident, I received a recall notice in the mail related to this issue: Safety Recall 66A/23V-411. However, the dealership has informed me that my vehicle is only covered under recall 66A (a software update) and not recall 73A, which involves replacement of the tone wheel component. Based on the symptoms experienced and the dealership’s diagnosis, the tone wheel requires replacement. However, the dealership states that this repair is not covered under the recall currently assigned to my vehicle. Given that this failure caused a sudden and complete loss of propulsion at highway speed, I believe this issue is directly related to the safety concern described in the recall and poses a serious safety risk. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether the recall coverage for this issue is adequate and whether vehicles experiencing this failure should also be covered for tone wheel replacement.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that after restarting the vehicle, the message "Service Power Steering" was displayed. The vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. The contact restarted the vehicle several times to correct the failure, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19E077000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 24,487.
I was driving on the highway and the power steering in truck disappeared and the warning light turned on. Lost the power steering.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the service transmission warning light illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The contact used a portable diagnostic tester to diagnose the vehicle and retrieved DTC: U0001 and U0402. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact was informed that an error code had been received, which indicated low voltage. The contact stated that the independent mechanic did not understand what the low voltage meant. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The failure reoccurred. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with steering control module failure. The contact was informed that the steering control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was a known failure with the vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,100.
The electric power steering system has now completely failed and the steering is fully locked/stiff at all times. The vehicle cannot be safely driven or operated. The issue began as intermittent loss of power steering assist and progressed to total failure without warning. Steering now requires extreme force and is effectively unusable. This creates a serious safety hazard, especially if it occurs while driving or turning. The vehicle is currently undrivable and unsafe. The vehicle has not yet been inspected but is available for inspection upon request.
While driving the Electric Power Steering Unit failed. would not steer. maneuvered vehicle to safe area; turned off vehicle; waiter about 5 minutes; vehicle started and steering reset to a usable steering. Drove home and parked. Next day started vehicle; steering would not work. This incident happened while driving. Hazardous to all around. In the past two months started vehicle and tried to steer with no results. Used a system diagnostic device to find codes--reported that EPS unit failure. Talked with dealership and Manufacturer, both stated that there was not a recall for the Vin in question. (Ref. NHTSA- Recall-----VB9-NHTSA-077). They both said the vin number was not in the recall. Vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or any other agency; only by current owner and family members. No warning of this happening was seen with this system failure prior to it happening. A message appeared in the dash system after this happened stating "check power steering"; not prior to the failure. No accident happened, no injuries occurred, no reports to police or insurance were made for this system failure. Contacted local dealership and manufacture of this failure, both stated this would be an "Out-Of-Pocket expense". Because of financial hardship, nothing has been done with this vehicle to date. It would require towing and repair of failure.
Truck suddenly lost power, and no power steering assistance at all. Had it checked out by mechanic and mechanic stated a new Rack and Pinion was needing costing over 2 Grand.
Our vehicle was a 2017 Ram 1500 crew Cab 4x4. We’re getting near to Goldfield Nevada. I saw this town to my left when I remarked about the town to my wife, we were going the speed limit of 70 mph about 2PM in the afternoon than all of a sudden steering went erratic, twisting and turning us all over the highway to strong for me to hold with no warning lights, Genie yelled out what is going on, I slammed on the brakes and the steering forced us off the road and rolled our vehicle close to two time over. My wife and I escaped with bruises and small cuts. Backs still hurt. I just had spent over 8500.00 on services including a new computer timing ring replacement new intake manifold and new ventilated brakes , tires had over 92% tread on them upgraded wheels I could not control the steering at all. All I could do was slam the brakes down trying to stop all of it and come to a halt. Steering twisted us all over the highway. I left a quite a stretch a rubber on the highway as we left the roadway and hit the loose gravel dirt and flipped over into a rocky ditch. This totaled our vehicle my wife and I had to be extricated through the front windshield and by a miracle did not need to go to the hospital. I’ve been in touch with [XXX] at Progressive. The vehicle was towed to Tonopah NV we have pictures that we sent to [XXX] at Progressive. I told [XXX] the brain box needs to be preserved along with the brake system for further investigation. I have learned now through my research as there is a problem with this type of electronic steering system. This vehicle types has to cause major accidents and an ongoing lawsuit. I’ll be contacting attorneys to let him know what happened and I know you need to know what happened also because the ongoing problems with these models 2013 through 2018 with the EPS. Sincerely [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 23V411000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) and 22V406000 (FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL). The contact stated that while driving at a slow speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact pulled into the driveway and turned off the vehicle. After exiting the vehicle, there was smoke coming from the exhaust pipe, with an abnormal burning odor coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle remained at the residence and had not been driven due to safety concerns. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V757000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.
Fortunately the vehicle was not in an accident. About a month ago ABS and traction control lights came on. Took pickup to mechanic with a C2200-49 code. Mechanic said the dealer could only fix the issue. Took to the dealer a couple of weeks ago and am now on a wait list with no indication when a repair can be made because of part availability. This problem seems to be the same as Ram 2500s have and have been recalled. The safety issue is the same.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. While the vehicle was parked, the contact became aware that the fuel tank strap had detached and was hanging outside of the fuel access door. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact researched and became aware of an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
While walking to my car I notice my fuel tank hanging down and upon further inspection the front fuel tank strap broke, I took it to a mechanic who confirmed that the strap broke from the frame which has rusted. This is a MAJOR safety issue which can cause serious injury or death. I know this is a known issue for the 2009-2012 models but it looks like this is an ongoing issue.
ABS Module failure, no parts available. National backorder. Part no longer seems supported by RAM.
Replaced the frozen suspension last year. Now that it’s cold again, similar codes are being thrown with new ones: Service Trailer Brake System, Service Air Suspension System, Service Electronic Braking System. To note, I’ve had a “Check Fuel Cap” code for years. It’s tied to 3 sensors along the fuel tank and absolutely nothing to do with the fuel cap itself. For the air suspension sensors (WHICH I’VE ALREADY REPLACED ONCE), and the fuel cap sensors— they all run nearly $300 a pop and that isn’t including labor. I personally cannot financially keep up with the vehicle’s maintenance costs. The fact that Canada had a class action lawsuit against FCA for the air suspension but we don’t is baffling. I pray nothing comes from these defective parts because I will be suing.
Lost all power steering.
My air suspension suddenly dropped out while I was driving and almost caused me to get into an accident. It was very cold outside.
Electric Power Steering failed
Sudden loss of power steering first occurred in early 2025. Truck was towed to nearby auto shop and it was deemed that the eps system had failed. Geico deemed I was not at fault and that it was likely due to moisture getting in the system. The steering rack and pinion was replaced with insurance and then in January 2026, the same issue occurred again despite not throwing any previous check engine light codes.
The crankshaft tone wheel failed just like the TSB's and recalls. The vehicle would not restart. There are multiple bulletins and recalls along with warranty extensions for this issue but for some reason it does not seem to apply to my truck even thought it falls in the tsb years and details of failure.
Electric power steering failure. (EPS) the Eapas system has failed and now it’s causing my steering to be extremely rough and almost impossible to drive. I have now taken it to a Dodge/Ram dealership and they have confirmed EPS failure on my truck. This happened while I was driving trying to make a turn, almost caused me to get hit but luckily that did not happen.
The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) module in this 2017 Ram 1500 has failed, causing the ABS warning light and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) indicators to remain illuminated. A diagnosis by an authorized dealership on 1/6/2026 confirmed the failure of the ABS module and the need for a total replacement. The dealership informed me that the necessary replacement part is on an indefinite backorder from the manufacturer with no estimated date of arrival. As a result, the vehicle currently lacks functional ABS and stability control. This creates a significant safety risk, as the vehicle may experience wheel lock-up or a loss of steering control during emergency braking or in slippery road conditions. The manufacturer's inability to provide a critical safety component for a modern road vehicle leaves the driver and public at risk. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.
loss of EPS, no the vehicle has not been inspected yet, no prior symptoms . drove vehicle to store and parked in parking lot, when returned to vehicle, no power steering with warning lamps
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while having an annual winter inspection completed on the vehicle, the contact was informed that the fuel strap was extremely corroded. The dealer informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V160000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 89,643.
The electronic power steering rack failed. We have had consistent temperatures near 0°f, with highs rarely above freezing for the past couple weeks. The motor and circuit panel for the steering rack built up enough water to freeze solid and completely lock the steering, luckily in the yard so I didn't have to go get my wife from work. But I've had to sideline my work both to work on it, and so my wife can take my truck to her job as this is her truck. I thawed the unit and re sealed the seam by the motor, as well as the cover over the circuit panel. Some part of it appears to have shorted out as it won't work now that it's been thawed, and is giving a message on the dash to service power steering. No prior issues, or warnings that something was failing. Glad it didn't fail last week when my wife and one year old daughter were on the road visiting family hours away. I can barely afford to buy a vehicle any more, never mind take one to a dealer or other shop for repairs. Plus I'm an hour from any of them, and at least 2 weeks wait to get in. I did try to get an answer from a couple of them. I do all my own repairs. I just can't fathom how putting sensitive electrical components underneath a 4wd truck and relying on a half hearted dab of silicone to seal them against the elements is a good idea. What was wrong with good old hydraulic power steering. I'm waiting for a cost and timeframe to get a replacement currently.
Power steering failed on two seperate occasions. Both times i was moving at a slow rate of speed and was able to safely exit the roadway. Both times check power steering warning light came on after the fact. I feel this is a real safety issue. This vehicle only has 27000 miles on it
Steering goes in and out, stability control keeps acting up and light stays on, and service braking. Contacted RAM dealership, and was told that the recall was already completed before I owned it. It seems odd that the same symptoms are showing up again. I can’t drive the truck safely. The steering locks up and hard to turn. The anti-lock brakes are activated when using brakes.
I am reporting a critical safety failure involving my 2017 Ram 1500 with approximately 89,000 miles. The component that failed was the fuel‑tank support system, specifically the frame section that holds the fuel‑tank brackets and strap. The frame in that area had completely rusted through, causing the fuel tank to drop and hang dangerously close to the ground. The failed components are still on the vehicle and are available for inspection upon request. This failure created a severe safety hazard. A partially detached fuel tank poses an immediate risk of fuel leakage, fire, or complete separation of the tank while driving, endangering both myself and other motorists. The issue has been confirmed by an independent, certified mechanic. They advised that the corrosion was so extensive that the frame would need to be disassembled to attempt any repair, which they were unable to perform. At this time, the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or any other official entity beyond the independent mechanic. There were no warning lamps, messages, unusual noises, or other symptoms prior to the failure. The problem became apparent only when I visually noticed the fuel tank hanging lower than normal. Given the seriousness of this defect and the potential for catastrophic failure, I am requesting immediate review and guidance on next steps.
EGR Cooler cracked @ 58,000 miles resulting in a disabled truck that has to be towed to the nearest dealership 20 miles away and 1 1/2 hours from our home two days before Christmas 2025. Thankfully my family was ok and the engine did not catch fire. The original EGR cooler was replaced by the manufacture under a recall at the end of 2020 @ 28,000 miles.
The Electronic Power Steering system failed on my Ram 1500 and it became extremely difficult to steer the truck. It created a very unsafe condition to drive the vehicle and Stellantis doesn't cover this VIN in the existing safety recall for this steering system on other Ram trucks.
As I was driving onto the highway, my battery low voltage indicator came on and shortly after my power steering failed. I had this issue earlier this year in April 2025 and replaced the old battery with a new one but after this incident, I don’t think it’s the battery anymore. I believe it’s the Electric Power Steering system.
My rear airbag suspension consistently looses air pressure and drops to the lowest setting. The dealer is unable to find a cause of the issue. It is a safety issue because I use the truck to pull a camper and if I loose the rear air suspension while towing, I would loose stability and possible cause an accident. There are no warning lights that there is a problem with anything and the diagnostics performed by the dealer show no failure codes.
Electric power system failure causing sudden loss of power steering assist. Safety hazard steering locks up while driving requiring extreme effort to turn creating crash risk. Codes: C2217-00 and U11E8-00 Connections to Recalls: My vehicle exhibits the exact failure mode covered by recalls 16V-167 and 19E-077, but my VIN was not included despite having identical symptoms and diagnostic codes. The problem occurred about a month ago 12/15/2025. There was a warning message on the Dash and Loss of Power steering while driving. We took it to our trusted mechanic and multiply codes came up: C2217-00, U11E8-00, U0155-00, U0415-00 and C2128-00
1-ABS module, yes ABS breaks do not engage properly Yes, Gettel CDJR Punta Gorda FL Only the Dealer that sold me the truck ABS warning light came on a couple days after purchase, after restarting the truck the warning light went off for a few days then came back on and now is on all the time 2-Exhaust manifold, slight exhaust smell from time to time in cab Yes, Gettel CDJR Punta Gorda FL By dealer No warning light only a loud ticking noise from the exhaust manifold area, confirmed by Gettel service department
The contact owned a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH, the vehicle independently accelerated. The message “Service Electronic Throttle Body” warning light was illuminated. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000.
DTC P0336 crankcase position sensor A circuit range/performance code truck lost power for several seconds at 50mph in traffic almost causing a collision, then power returned causing fast acceleration almost lost control of vehicle. truck is now in limp mode. there is a recall for DTC P0336 is a known defective reluctor wheel problem on Ran eco-diesel trucks made between 2014-2018. I have a 2017 model which was purchased june 2018. Ram dealership says my vin is not included in recall though my model and year is.
