THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT HAS CORRODED AT THE U-JOINT DUE TO INSUFFICIENT PROTECTION AND POOR DESIGN. THIS HAS RESULTED IN STIFF, JERKY STEERING THAT POSES A DRIVING HAZARD, AND IS A SIGNIFICANT EXPENSE TO REPLACE.

TIGHT STEERING I THOUGHT DUE TO EXTREME COLD TEMPS IN FEBRUARY. PROBLEM WOULD RESOLVE ITSELF AS THE OUTSIDE TEMPS AND/OR ENGINE TEMP INCREASED. IN APRIL I WAS STILL HAVING VERY TIGHT STEERING INTERMITTENTLY ESPECIALLY ON START UP AND IN THE MORNING (WHEN MY VEHICLE HADN'T SAT IN THE SUN ALL DAY). TOOK IT IN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC, WAS TOLD THE JOINTS INSIDE THE STEERING SHAFT WERE SEIZING UP AND I NEEDED A WHOLE NEW STEERING SHAFT - TOTAL PRICE $533.00. *TR

THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED. AFTER A COUPLE OF MONTHS I STARTED EXPERIENCING A LOUD "SQUEAK" COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND A "WHISTLE" AT SPEEDS OF 65-80MPH. I CONTACTED DEALER AND TOOK IT IN FOR THEM TO TROUBLESHOOT THE ISSUES. AFTER ABOUT 4 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP ALONG WITH THE ABOVE MENTIONED PROBLEMS I STARTED NOTICING A HEAVY VIBRATION AT SLOW SPEEDS. I BOUGHT NEW TIRES, FRONT END ALIGNMENT, AND HAD TIRES BALANCED AS PER MY DEALERS RECOMMENDATION. THEN THE ACCELERATION ISSUES STARTED..... I TOOK IT BACK TO MY DEALERSHIP AND THEY PERFORMED THE "FLOOR MAT FIX". THE VIBRATIONS JUST KEPT GETTING WORSE AND THE CONSTANT VISITS TO MY DEALER AND CALLS TO TOYOTA'S CORPORATE OFFICE ALWAYS ENDING WITH THE "THAT'S NORMAL FOR THESE TRUCKS" SAYING. THE OTHER DAY I WAS RETURNING HOME AND I WAS APPROACHING A CURVE I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SLOWED DOWN TO TAKE THE CURVE, I WENT TO ACCELERATE THROUGH THE CURVE AND MY TRUCK WAS NOT TURNING. THE REAR TIRES WERE LOCKED EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT WAS OFF THE BRAKE WHICH BY THAT HAPPENING I HAD NO CONTROL OVER WHERE I WAS GOING. ... I ENDED UP NOT BEING ABLE TO STEER AROUND THE CURVE AND WENT STRAIGHT THROUGH SOMEONE'S YARD TAKING OUT A MAILBOX AND SLIDING SIDEWAYS INTO A TREE CRUSHING THE PASSENGER SIDE OF MY TRUCK. CALLED TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND REPORTED THE LOCKING UP OFF MY REAR END, THE FAILURE OF THE ANTI LOCK SYSTEM, AND THE LOSS OF STEERING. ALL I GOT FOR MY TROUBLES WAS A RUDE "WELL THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO" (AS ALWAYS). I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS SINCE I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK. TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS ALL OF THE ISSUES THAT HAS PLAGUED THE TACOMAS FROM DAY ONE. 2007 TACOMA WELL MAINTAINED AND GARAGE KEPT IS SHOWING SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE RUST ON FRAME AND AND INSIDE FRAME RAILS. TOYOTA HAS A CAMPAIGN OUT AT THIS TIME TO COVER EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST ON TACOMA'S IN THE FOLLOWING STATES. CT DE IL IN KY MA MD ME MI MN NH NJ NY OH PA RI VA VT WI WV, & D.C. I LIVE IN IOWA WHICH ALSO USES SALT ON ROADS IN THE WINTER AND ONLY LIVE 35 MILES FROM THE MINNESOTA BORDER, SO WHY IS MY TRUCK NOT COVERED IN THIS SALT BELT CAMPAIGN? HOWEVER, THE REMEDY FAILED TO REPAIR THE FAILURE. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000.
BOTH REAR LEAF SPRINGS FAILED IN NOVEMBER 2014. THE OUTER LEAF OF BOTH REAR SPRINGS FRACTURED. I REPLACED THE LEAF SPRINGS WITH AN AFTER MARKET SUSPENSION SYSTEM WHICH INCLUDED REAR LEAF SPRINGS. THIS WAS BEFORE THE TOYOTA LEAF SPRING RECALL. TOYOTA JUST DENIED MY CLAIM FOR REIMBURSEMENT STATING THAT THE AFTER MARKET LEAF SPRINGS ARE NOT THE PART THAT WAS COVERED BY THE RECALL. THEY STATED THAT AFTER MARKET PARTS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR REIMBURSEMENT. BASED ON WHAT I HAVE READ OF THE LAW, I DON'T BELIEVE THIS TO BE A VALID REASON FOR DENIAL OF REIMBURSEMENT.

REGARDING THE FRAME RUST ISSUE WITH THE TACOMA, I AM CONCERNED THAT MY TRUCK WILL BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. AN INSPECTION OF MY FRAME HAS NOT BEEN PERFORMED BECAUSE IOWA IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE "COLD WEATHER STATE" LIST IN THE SERVICE BULLETIN. I AM GUESSING THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN HERE IN WINTER. IS IT WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD, VIN NUMBER, OR DID TOYOTA JUST LIMIT THE STATES IT WOULD COVER. MY ISSUE IS IF MY TRUCK HAS A RUST ISSUE IT SHOULD BE COVERED FOR THE SAFETY CONCERN. HAD DEALER CALL TOYOTA WITH NO RESULTS. I CALLED FROM THE PARKING LOT & RECEIVED A CASE #. NOTHING ELSE HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED. CALLED A FEW DAYS LATER & SPOKE TO A CORPORATE PERSON. "TOYOTA CAN DO NOTHING AT THIS POINT , BECAUSE A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED FOR MY VEHICLE'S VIN# . MY TRUCK'S CHASSIS HAS BEEN COMPROMISED & YET THEY WON'T REPAIR IT YET! MY INDIGO BLUE PAINT HAS PEELED OF THE ROOF OF THE CAB PREMATURELY AND WITHOUT ANY DAMAGE I RESEARCHED THE TOYOTA RECALL ON WHITE BLIZZARD PEARL PAINT AND I BELIEVE THIS IS DEFINITELY A SIMILAR DEFECT. PRIOR TO THE REMEDY, THE LEAF SPRING HAD FRACTURED. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, THE TECHNICIAN REFUSED TO APPLY THE ADHESIVE SPRAY. THE REPRESENTATIVE FROM TOYOTA INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT DUE TO GOVERNMENT REGULATION THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT HAVE THE ADHESIVE APPLIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,000.

I TOOK THE TRUCK IN FOR IT'S YEARLY INSPECTION AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRAME WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION NEXT YEAR. IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT I CHECK IF THIS TRUCK FRAME WAS UNDER A RECALL. I SPOKE WITH MY TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS TRUCK DOES NOT FALL UNDER CURRENT CRITERIA. I HAVE CALLED TOYOTA EXPERIENCE TO LODGE MY COMPLAINT THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE THAT A TRUCK WITH 51335 MILES FRAME HAS RUSTED SO BADLY THAT IT WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION. AFTER PURCHASING THIS TRUCK USED IN SEPT 2014, MY MECHANIC NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING WAS MISSING HALF OF ONE OF THE LEAVES. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL PROGRAM, EVEN THOUGH THE INTERNET REVEALED NUMEROUS OTHER OWNERS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS. SINCE TOYOTA OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE WHAT SO EVER, I PURCHASED AN AFTER MARKET SPRING REPLACEMENT KIT, AND UPGRADED THE ENTIRE SUSPENSION. IN 2016, TOYOTA NOTIFIED ME OF A NHTSA RECALL 14V-604, DEALING WITH BROKEN LEAF SPRINGS, MY EXACT PROBLEM. SINCE I HAD ALREADY REPAIRED THE PROBLEM AT MY OWN COST, I SUBMITTED THE INVOICES FOR THE SUSPENSION KIT, AND MY MECHANIC'S INVOICE. THEY HAVE CONTINUALLY REQUESTED ADDITIONAL AND UNNECESSARY PAPER WORK, INCLUDING A SEPARATE DETAILED LETTER FROM MY MECHANIC. ONE IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 2 YEARS, AND TWO HE IS NO LONGER IN BUSINESS. I WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY TO COMPLY WITH THESE REQUIREMENTS WHEN THE REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED, BUT OF COURSE TOYOTA WAS DENYING RESPONSIBILITY AT THAT TIME. THIS IS MERELY AN EFFORT TO DELAY AND AVOID PAYMENT UNDER THE RECALL PLAN. I AM NOT TRYING TO GET TOYOTA TO PAY FOR OTHER UNRELATED PARTS AND REPAIRS, ONLY THE REAR LEAF SPRINGS AND LABOR TO REPLACE. EVERY TIME I CALL TOYOTA, THEY SAY THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF IT, AND THEN A MONTH LATER I GET THE SAME ROBO LETTER REQUESTING THE SAME UNREASONABLE INFO THAT I CAN'T PROVIDE OVER 2 YEARS LATER. I WOULD FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE BBB, BUT TOYOTA HAS AN "F" RATING, SO OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE NO CONCERN FOR CUSTOMER SAFETY OR SATISFACTION.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 68,000.
WE WERE INSPECTING THE UNDERBODY OF OUR COMPANY OWNED TACOMA. THERE IS MAJOR RUST ON THE FRONT FRAME, AND THE STEERING ARM (A-ARM?) WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE FRAME. THE RUST IS SUBSTANTIAL ENOUGH TO ALLOW POSSIBLE SEPARATION OF THE ARMS FROM THE FRAME. WE DID SOME INTERNET RESEARCH AND SEE THAT CORROSION WAS A PROBLEM WITH EARLIER MODELS OF THE TACOMA. WE WILL TAKE THIS TO THE DEALERSHIP TO INSPECT BUT WE THOUGHT IT SHOULD BE REPORTED. IT APPEARS THAT IF THOSE CONNECTIONS FAIL STEARING WOULD BE SUBSTANTIALLY IMPAIRED. *JS
ON OR ABOUT JULY 24, 2014, I NOTICED WHILE PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY THAT MY 2007 TOYOTA TACOMA TRD EXTENDED CAB WITH 62830 MILES THAT THE STEERING WAS QUITE HARD TO TURN. BUT THE PROBLEM SEEM TO GO AWAY AFTER A MINUTE. THIS THEN CONTINUED TO HAPPEN INTERMITTENTLY AT VARIOUS SPEEDS FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS UNTIL I HAD NEAR COLLISION WHILE DRIVING OUT OF TOWN IN NEW JERSEY. WHILE PROCEEDING AT AN INTERSECTION AT ABOUT 20 MILES PER HOUR AND TURNING WITH MULTIPLE VEHICLES PARALLELED TO ME, I NEARLY SWIPED ANOTHER VEHICLE ON MY RIGHT. THIS WAS BECAUSE MY STEERING BECAME VERY STIFF WHICH MADE IT VERY HARD FOR ME TO TURN THE WHEEL. DRIVING MY TACOMA HAD NOW BECOME DANGEROUS AND I COULDN'T TAKE ANY MORE CHANCES. THE NEXT DAY I CALLED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND SET UP AN APPOINTMENT TO TAKE MY TRUCK IN FOR THE FOLLOWING DAY. WHEN I DROP-OFF MY VEHICLE, I INDICATED TO THE ATTENDANT THAT THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT MY BE THE CULPRIT. THIS WAS BECAUSE IN DOING SOME RESEARCH I DISCOVERED THAT THE SAME THING HAD HAPPENED TO A MULTITUDE OF PEOPLE WHO OWN A TACOMA. WELL MY VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, WITH THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM BEING THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. A REPAIR THAT COST ME $579.00 SINCE AS PART OF THE REPAIR THEY HAD TO DO A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. *TR
STEERING IS HARD, BINDING UP AT SEVERAL POINTS IN A 90 DEGREE TURN, AND THEN THE WHEEL DOES NOT RECOVER AUTOMATICALLY AS TURN IS COMPLETED. IT WOULD STAY IN THE "TURNED" POSITION IF I DID NOT MANUALLY RETURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE "STRAIGHT" POSITION.
SIMILAR TO OTHER COMPLAINTS, THE POWER STEERING BECOMES INTERMITTENT AND IT BECOME VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE TRUCK WHEN THE POWER STEERING CUTS OUT. THIS COULD POTENTIALLY BE VERY DANGEROUS IN CERTAIN DRIVING SITUATIONS. I AM BRINGING THE TRUCK TO TOYOTA FOR INSPECTION AND HOPING TOYOTA WILL PAY FOR THE REPAIR, AS IT SEEMS TO BE A CHRONIC ISSUE FOR THIS YEAR AND MODEL. *TR

IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD EXHIBITED EXCESSIVE CORROSION ON THE ENTIRE FRAME WHICH WAS PERFORATED. THE MANUFACTURER DEEMED THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
WHILE DRIVING ONTO ENTRANCE RAMP OF HIGHWAY, ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ONTO TRAFFIC, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY STIFF WITH LOSS OF POWER STEERING. I PULLED HARDER TO ENTER HIGHWAY AND STEERING FINALLY CAUGHT CAUSING ME TO SWERVE OVER ALMOST HITTING VEHICLE IN FAR LEFT LANE. CHECKED POWER STEERING AND IS FULL. DID SOME INTERNET SEARCHES AND HAVE COME UP WITH SEVERAL COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME ISSUE. THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING COLUMN BECOMES FAULTY AND IS DANGEROUS. THIS CAN CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY. TOYOTA SHOULD ISSUE RECALL ON THIS PART AND HAVE REPLACED. STEERING COLUMN JOINT IS NOT PROTECTED FROM THE ELEMENTS AND BECOMES RUSTED AWAY. *TR

THIS VEHICLE: A) WAS PURCHASE NEW BY ME IN 2006, B) IS STORED IN A FULLY ENCLOSED GARAGE, C) IS NOT USED FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES, D) MY HOME IS IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY (IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF NEW YORK CITY AND NOT A HOSTILE VEHICLE ENVIRONMENT) AND E) THE TRUCK HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE - 31,000 MI. THE FRAME HAS RUSTED ENTIRELY THROUGH IN TWO PLACES AND SHOWS EXTENSIVE RUST THROUGHOUT, INCLUDING AT POINTS JOINING THE FRAME TO THE CHASSIS. UPDATED 09/04/14
