TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. AFTER THE SECOND FAILURE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP EXPLODED AND SENT METAL FRAGMENTS INTO THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 37,700.
I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPOT , TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL TO COAST IN AND APPLIED THE BRAKE (APPROX 3 TO 4 MPH). THE ENGINE REVVED AND ACCELERATED. THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD. I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I COULD. THE CAR MOVED APPROX 6 FEET AND OVER A 6 INCH CURB. SUDDENLY THE ENGINE RETURNED TO NORMAL REVS. LUCKILY THERE WAS ONLY LAWN IN FRONT OF ME OR I WOULD HAVE DONE SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE. STRANGELY THE CAR RADIO CHANGED STATIONS AT THE EXACT SAME TIME OF THE ACCELERATION. THE ENGINE TYPE IS THE VW DIESEL TDI WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. *TR
WE HAVE OWNED THIS 2010 JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI SINCE BRAND NEW. TODAY 1/28/14 IS THE FOURTH TIME WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE LOCK MECHANISM ON ONE OF THE DOORS. PART NUMBERS 3B4-839-016-AP (LEFT REAR), 3B1-837-016-CG (RIGHT FRONT) AND 3B4-839-015-AP (RIGHT REAR) HAVE ALL BEEN REPLACED AT LEAST ONCE. RIGHT REAR LATCH HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE - ONLY ONCE UNDER WARRANTY. IN LOOKING ON NHTSA WEB SITE THERE ARE 8 OTHER REPORTS OF PROBLEMS WITH LATCHES IN THE 2010 JETTA. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE MOST OF THE REPORTS (INCLUDING MINE) WERE FOR DOORS THAT WOULD NOT UNLOCK AND DOORS THAT WOULD NOT OPEN NO MATTER WHAT THE REPORTING PARTY TRIED. CAN YOU IMAGINE IF THESE LATCHES FAILED IN AN ACCIDENT AND CHILDREN SITTING IN THE REAR SEATS WERE TRAPPED? *TR
NO EVENTS LEADING UP TO FAILURE. BUBBLE IN SIDEWALL. TIRE REPLACED. *TR
JETTA TDI DIESEL ENGINE STALL PRECEDED BY GLOW PLUG ALARM AND SUBSEQUENT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DISPLAY. THE CAR COULD BE RESTARTED AFTER SEVERAL TRIES AND DRIVEN VERY SLOWLY AS THE ENGINE WAS EXTREMELY SLUGGISH. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS FAILURE OCCURRED, THE LAST BEING IN NOVEMBER 2010. THE FIRST FAILURE WAS CORRECTED BY A SOFTWARE UPDATE. IN THIS SECOND FAILURE, THE DEALER SAID THEY FOUND METAL FILINGS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM AND THEY WILL REPLACE ALL COMPONENTS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM AND SEND THE PARTS INCLUDING THE REMAINING FUEL TO GERMANY FOR ANALYSIS. GAS WAS SUSPECTED IN THE FUEL, BUT RULED OUT BY TESTING AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER SAYS VW DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM CAUSE IS AND THEY HAVE HAD SIMILAR FAILURES IN OTHER JETTA TDI'S. *TR
VEHICLE, A 2010 VOLKWAGEN JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI DIESEL MODEL WITH ABOUT 2500 MILES ON IT (NEARLY NEW) STALLED IN BUSY TRAFFIC LEAVING MY WIFE STRANDED. VEHICLE HAD FAILURE OF HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP, REPORTED BY MANY OWNERS OF RECENT VOLKWAGEN TDI MODELS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA DTI WITH HANKOOK OPTIMO H725A TIRES, LINE SIZE P205/55R16. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN FOR A TIRE ROTATION WHEN HE WAS INFORMED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES WERE COMING APART AT THE SIDE WALL. TWO OF THE TIRES WERE REPLACED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT HE WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN SPEAKING WITH SOMEONE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 42,125 AND CURRENT MILEAGE 42,200. UPDATED 5/24/11 *CN THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED ALL FOUR TIRES SHOWED SIGNS OF DETERIORATION. UPDATED 06/03/11
2010 VW SPORTWAGEN TDI 2.0 TURBO, AUTOMATIC. WE HAD A MAJOR LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, GLOW PLUG LIGHT BLINKS, AND FLASHING 'ENGINE MALFUNCTION'. SHE PULLED OVER SAFELY AND TURNED OFF. WE HAD ONLY 4000 MILES ON IT. IT STARTED UP AFTER A FEW MINUTES. CALLED THE LOCAL VW DEALER AND WAS TOLD IT MUST BE A FLUKE. TOLD DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, DRIVE IT. IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN CALL THEM. IT HAPPENED AGAIN, A FEW MONTHS LATTER WITH 8,000 MILES ON IT. AGAIN THE WIFE IS DRIVING. IT WAS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED WHEN AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE ENGINE LOOSES ALL POWER AND CUTS OUT WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC! LUCKY EVERYONE BESIDE AND AROUND US WERE ALERT! SHE PULLED OVER SAFELY. SAME THING ... LIGHTS BLINKING GLOW PLUGS AND ENGINE CODED MALFUNCTION. CALLED LOCAL VW DEALER, I TOLD THEM THEY NEED TO CHECK IT. ASKED WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM? ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM? VW EXPLANATION...WELL THERE WAS NONE. THEY WOULD NOT COMMIT TO ANYTHING! HAD TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT...ENDED UP IT WILL BE A WEEK BEFORE THEY CAN LOOK AT IT. IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT 1-1/2 HOURS SERVICE TIME? I STARTED TO CHECK THE TDI BLOGS FOR THIS PROBLEM. I GOT AN EAR FULL! HIGH PRESSURE DIESEL FUEL PUMP FAILURE. BLOGS HAVE IT AT $9,000 TO $10,000 REPAIR COST? AND MAY NOT BE UNDER VW WARRANTY??? VW NEEDS TO DO A RECALL? I SEE THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHERS OUT THERE LIKE ME. THIS IS NOT SAFE. *TR
WE HAVE 2010 VW JETTA TDI AND WE HAVE THE STALLING PROBLEMS. IT STARTED ABOUT 3 MONTHS AFTER WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. IN CA HIGHWAY TRAFFIC I HAD THE CAR STALL ON ME 15 TIMES, I WAS WRECK BY THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY. I REFUSE TO DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE. IT HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP NOW 6 TIMES TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND THEY KEEP GIVING US ALL THESE STUPID REASONS AND THEN TELL US THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE STALLING PROBLEM SO THEY CAN'T FIX IT. I JUST WANT THE PROBLEM FIXED AND I AM TRIED OF GETTING THE RUN AROUND WITH VOLKSWAGEN ON THIS. OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS. WE TAKE IT THE DEALER IT RUNS GREAT FOR ABOUT 2 DAYS AND THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THEN 4 HOURS LATER THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT COMES ON AND BACK TO THE DEALER WE GO WITH NOTHING IN THE END. THEY KEEP TELLING US IT IS ELECTRICAL NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FUEL PROBLEM. IT IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING THAT VOLKSWAGEN WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. *TR
2010 VW JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI GLOW-PLUG LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGINS BLINKING, LOSS OF ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING. TOOK TO DEALER, TURBO AND EXHAUST SENSOR REPLACED AND CAR RETURNED TO OWNER. NOW, HAS BEEN IN MANY TIMES FOR SHORT HESITATION AND BRIEF ENGINE STOPPAGE. FUEL FILTER REPLACED, ALL SCREEN FILTERS CHECKED FOR METAL, ASSOCIATED WITH PUMP FAILURE, IN TANK PUMP REPLACED, AND COMPUTER UPDATES. CAR IS AGAIN BACK IN OWNERS HANDS AND WAITING TO SEE IF FIXED. VW STATED THAT VEHICLE WILL NO LONGER BE SERVICED FOR THIS ON GOING PROBLEM UNTIL PROBLEM CAN BE DUPLICATED. THIS WILL BE A CHALLENGE SINCE IT IS A TOTALLY RANDOM EVENT. I HAVE SEEN IN SEVERAL FORUMS THAT THIS PROBLEM CAN OCCUR MULTIPLE TIMES AND HAS FOR OWNER. POSSIBLE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP DISINTEGRATION IS SUSPECTED CAUSE. IN ADDITION TO THE OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT FUTURE FAILURE DUE TO FAULTY FUEL PUMPS (IF THAT IS THE CAUSE) AND THE $9,000 REPAIR COST. AND OF COURSE BEING STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD CARRIES ITS OWN HAZARDS. *TR
VOLKSWAGEN 2010 JETTA TDI STATIONWAGON - PULLED TO STOP LIGHT AND CAR JUST SHUT OFF - EVERYTHING ALL ELECTRONICS AND ENGINE. *TR
MY 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA SPORTWAGEN HAS STALLED TWO TIMES SINCE NEW. I AM CONCERNED IT IS THE FAULTY FUEL PUMP THAT YOU ARE INVESTIGATING. I AM STATIONED OVERSEAS WITH THE US GOVERNMENT IN EUROPE AND HAVE RECENTLY BROUGHT THE CAR WITH US TO DENMARK. IT WAS PURCHASED NEW IN MAY 2010 FROM A PITTSBURGH, PA VW DEALERSHIP. I AM VERY CONCERNED OF A COMPLETE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEEDS. THE CAR HAS ONLY STALLED WHILE COMING TO A STOP. *TR
MALFUNCTION INDICATOR, SERVICE ENGINE BEGAN FLASHING, VEHICLE SHUT DOWN AND WOULDN'T RESTART. FROM FIRST WARNING LIGHT TO SHUT DOWN WAS MAYBE 10 SECONDS OR LESS. TOWED TO DEALER AND TWO WEEKS LATER I HAD A COMPLETELY NEW FUEL SYSTEM. APPARENTLY THERE WAS METAL IN THE FUEL SYSTEM THAT GOT THERE FROM THE HPFP. DEALER REPEATEDLY SUGGESTED THAT I MUST HAVE FILLED THE TANK WITH GASOLINE INSTEAD OF DIESEL. I DON'T APPRECIATE THE SHIFT IN BLAME. I UNDERSTAND THE REPAIR (COVERED UNDER WARRANTY) RUNS CLOSE TO 10K DOLLARS. YIKES. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A TRAFFIC LIGHT THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE REFUELED HIS VEHICLE PRIOR TO IT STALLING. THERE WAS A DEFECT INVESTIGATION OPENED ON FEBRUARY 7, 2011 AND WAS OPEN WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL, NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA11003. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THIS VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED CONTINUAL PROBLEMS WITH ENGINE SHUDDERING AND STALLING. MOSTLY, WHILE IN 2ND , 3RD OR 4TH GEAR, EARLY ON INTO A TRIP THE ENGINE WILL SUDDENLY DECELERATE AND IN SOME CASE STALL OUT COMPLETELY. IT IS AS IF THERE IS A SUDDEN LOSS IN FUEL GETTING TO THE ENGINE. THIS STARTED SOON AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR. IT HAS BEEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP NUMEROUS (6 OR 7) TIMES FOR THIS WARRANTY ISSUE, INCLUDING EXTENDED STAY PERIODS OF SEVEN AND TEN DAYS. FIRST THEY FAULTED MY FUEL, THEN THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, THEN THEY HAVE DONE OTHER WORK AND REPLACED COMPONENTS, BUT CLAIM THEY CAN NOT MAKE THE CAR FAIL AS I HAVE REPORTED. THEY CLAIM TO HAVE ALERTED VW AND HAD A VW TECHNICAL ADVISERS LOOK AT THIS CAR. THEY REFUSE TO DO ANY ADDITIONAL WARRANTY WORK ON THE CAR FOR THIS ISSUE SINCE THEY CAN NOT DIAGNOSE IT. I HAVE KEPT A LOG OF THESE FAILURES SINCE MY LAST SERVICING. BETWEEN 10/22/2010 TO 3/12/2011 THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD 19 OF THESE FAILURE EVENTS. THEY USUALLY OCCUR WHEN THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 32 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. THE VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY (28,500 MILES ON THE ODOMETER). I AM FINDING OTHER OWNERS EXPERIENCING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. PLEASE HELP.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD NORMALLY, I OBSERVED A DIESEL SMELL IN THE CABIN AND THAT THE FUEL GAUGE WAS FALLING FASTER THAN NORMAL. PULLED INTO PARKING LOT AND TURNED OFF ENGINE. UPON INSPECTION, DIESEL SMELL PRONOUNCED BY THE HOOD AREA. OPENED HOOD AND SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE BLOCK AREA AT A MODERATE RATE. DIESEL WAS DRIPPING ON THE INSIDE OF THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE. DIESEL CONTINUED LEAKING FOR ONE HOUR. AT THIS TIME, I FELT IT WAS A SAFETY HAZARD TO ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THE CAR ANY FURTHER. I CONTACTED VW ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A VW DEALER. I DID NOT HAVE A CHANCE TO OBSERVE IF THE DIESEL LEAK HAD STOPPED. FURTHERMORE, THE CAR HAD BEEN FUELED FROM AN EMPTY TANK TO ABOUT HALF A TANK BEFORE THIS TRIP (ACCORDING TO FUEL GAUGE). THIS TRIP WAS APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES HIGHWAY DRIVING. THE FUEL TANK CAPACITY OF THIS CAR IS 13 GALLONS AND THE AVERAGE ECONOMY OVER THIS TRIP WAS RECORDED AS 35.7 MPG. WHEN THE CAR WAS SHUT OFF, THE GAUGE READ APPROXIMATELY 1/4 FULL. THIS SUGGESTS THAT THE CAR WAS LEAKING SEVERAL GALLONS OF DIESEL PER HOUR. THE CAR WAS BOUGHT IN MAY 2010 (THIS COMPLAINT IS WRITTEN ON MARCH 6, 2011) NEW WITH 11 MILES ON IT. WAS SERVICED ON OCTOBER 2011 AS PER OWNERS MANUAL. NO DAMAGE OR OTHER ISSUES TO THE CAR. NO SEVERE SERVICE. MAINLY USED TO COMMUTE TO AND FROM WORK AND RUN ERRANDS. *TR
ON A 40 DEGREE DAY I DROVE THE CAR ABOUT 1 MILE. AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT IT STALLED. I HAD TO KEEP THE CAR IN PARK UNTIL THE LIGHT CHANGED, THEN I PUT IT IN DRIVE. WHEN THE CAR WAS INITIALLY STARTED IT DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT. IT DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE POWER OR PICK UP. I NOTICED THE TACHOMETER WAS QUICKLY BOUNCING BETWEEN 1800 RPM DOWN TO 400 RPM PRIOR TO STALLING. CAR HAD HALF A TANK OF DIESEL, OUTSIDE WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE DRY. *TR THE CONSUMER STATED THE STALLING IS STILL ONGOING. THE DEALER BELIEVED THE STALLING WAS A RESULT OF DIFFERENT ADDITIVES IN THE FUEL BETWEEN WINTER AND SUMMER. UPDATED 09/14/11

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO PROBLEM WITH OEM TIRES STATING THAT THESE LOW PROFILE TIRES ARE EITHER A DEFECTIVE BATCH OR THAT THEY ARE NOT PROPERLY MATCHED TO THE 2010 JETTA *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 9,000 MILES, SIDEWALL BUBBLES BEGAN TO FORM ON THREE OF THE TIRES AT SEPARATE TIMES. THE DEALER REPLACED ONE OF THE TIRES AS A COURTESY. *JB
WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID IS INGESTED INTO THE CABIN UPON ACTIVATION. FAILURE IS REPEATABLE AND CONSISTENT. DEALER SAYS THIS IS NORMAL AND COMMON TO ALL VW CARS. MSDS LISTS NOSE IRRITATION, HEADACHE, FATIGUE, NAUSEA, VISUAL IMPAIRMENT OR COMPLETE AND POSSIBLE BLINDNESS, ACIDOSIS, CONVULSIONS, CIRCULATORY COLLAPSE, RESPIRATORY FATIGUE, AND DEATH AS THE INHALATION HAZARDS FOR WASHER FLUID. *TR
MY 2010 JETTA TDI SEDAN HAS STALLED 3 TIMES ON ME IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS. ON THE FIRST OCCASION, I HAD COME OFF A FREEWAY, DRIVEN TWO BLOCKS ON A STREET, AND WAS MAKING A LEFT. THE CAR STALLED AND THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON. I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND RESTARTED THE CAR. TWO WEEKS LATER, I WAS MAKING A LEFT INTO A PARKING LOT AND THE SAME THING OCCURRED. THE CAR STALLED BUT STARTED IMMEDIATELY. ON 2/22/11, I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AND THE CAR STALLED AGAIN. LUCKILY, NO DRIVER WAS BEHIND ME. I HAD THE CAR SERVICED BY VW VAN NUYS, CA BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND COULD FIND NO TRACE OF IT. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE WIPER BLADE ON THIS JETTA IS SCRATCHING THE GLASS LEAVING A STREAK IN THE DRIVERS LINE OF SIGHT. THE BLADES HAVE BEEN REPLACED AND THE WINDSHIELD REPLACED ONLY TO HAVE THE NEW WINDSHIELD SCRATCHED IN THE DRIVERS VIEW. THIS HAS BEEN LOOKED AT BY SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS WITH NO FIX AVAILABLE OTHER THAN REPLACING THE WINDSHIELD EVERY FEW HUNDRED MILES OR DRIVING WITH DRIVERS VIEW OBSTRUCTED.
UPON EXITING THE FREEWAY AND APPLYING THE BRAKES,SPEED35MPH, THE LEFT REAR WHEEL LOCKED-UP AND BLEW THE TIRE. SPARE TIRE WAS PLACED ON VEHICLE, THEN DRIVEN APP. 2MILES TO HOUSE. DURING TRIP TO HOUSE BRAKES LOST FLUID AND IT BECAME HARD TO STOP CAR. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED. REQUIRED NEW TIRE, BRAKE CALIPER, PADS AND ROTOR REPLACE FLUID. *TR
ON 2/14/11, WHILE DRIVING DOWNHILL IN COMMUTER TRAFFIC AT ABOUT 30 MPH, MY 2010 VW SPORTWAGON TDI STALLED FOR NO APPARENT REASON AND FAILED TO RESTART. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND, AFTER A SHORT WAIT, THE ENGINE RESTARTED. AT FIRST IT IDLED VERY ROUGHLY AT 800 RPM, BUT EVENTUALLY THE IDLE SMOOTHED AT 1,000 RPM, AND I WAS ABLE TO PROCEED TO WORK. MY VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 10,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS JUST SERVICED BY VW THREE WEEKS AGO. I REPORT THIS BECAUSE I JUST SAW THIS WEEKEND AN ARTICLE ON BLOOMBERG ABOUT VW DIESEL ENGINES HAVING FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS. THIS IS THE ONLY STALLING EPISODE I HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH THIS VEHICLE TO DATE. *TR
TRAVELING THROUGH PARKING LOT AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY TURNED OFF. APPLIED BRAKE, PUT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN PARK AND RESTARTED VEHICLE. EVENT OCCURRED (ONLY TIME) 02-11-2011 AND VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN APRIL OF 2010. NO INCIDENT OR COLLISION OCCURRED DUE TO EXTREMELY LOW SPEED. MY 2010 JETTA TDI VOLKSWAGEN HAD 12,759 MILES ON IT AND RAN PERFECTLY FINE UNTIL ALL OF A SUDDEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT ON A TRIP IT STARTED TO SHAKE AND RATTLE. WITHIN LESS THAN A FEW MINUTES THE CAR JUST STOPPED RUNNING WHILE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A VW DEALER. IT WAS A TOTAL FUEL PUMP FAILURE; THEY FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FILTER HOUSING AND IN THE TANK. VW REPLACED ALL FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS UNDER WARRANTY. VW CLAIMED THIS ONLY HAPPENS IF GASOLINE IS PUT IN THE DIESEL TANK, BUT I NEVER PUT GAS IN THE TANK AND THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND ANY GAS THE SYSTEM. *TR
SUCCESSFULLY STARTING AND DRIVING THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS OF BELOW FREEZING TEMPS AT 40MPH AVERAGE. PUT CAR IN 40DEG GARAGE OVERNIGHT. STARTED CAR IN THE MORNING IN GARAGE, IT RAN FOR ABOUT 3-5 SECONDS THEN STOPPED. RESTART ACTED LIKE DEAD BATTERY; HALF TURN OF CRANK, THEN NOTHING. SUSPECTING A DEAD BATTERY, I PUT A CHARGER ON AND TRIED AGAIN HALF AN HOUR LATER; STILL NO START, JUST HALF TURN THEN NOTHING. TRIED AGAIN ABOUT EVERY HALF HOUR FOR 3 HOURS UNTIL IT FINALLY STARTED, THEN IT SEEMED TO BE RUNNING ON 3 CYL FOR ABOUT 15-20 SEC UNTIL IT STARTED TO RUN SMOOTH. TOOK TO DEALER WHERE THEY TESTED BATTERY AND CHARGING SYSTEM; EVERYTHING WITHIN SPECS AND NO CODES. THEY KEPT CAR OUTSIDE OVERNIGHT AT 20 DEGREES AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP THE NEXT MORNING. I INVESTIGATED THIS ISSUE ON SEVERAL TDI FORUMS AND IT SEEMS THIS IS ATTRIBUTED TO ICE FORMING IN THE INTERCOOLER THEN THAWING WHEN WARMED UP. ENGINE WILL START NORMALLY UNTIL IT INGESTS THE WATER/VAPOR THAT SHUTS IT DOWN. SEVERAL OWNERS ARE REPORTING HALF CUP TO TWO CUPS OF WATER DRAINED OUT OF INTERCOOLER HOSES. SEVERAL OWNERS ARE REPORTING ENGINE EITHER SHUTTING DOWN OR GOING INTO LIMP MODE ON HIGHWAY AFTER ICE BLOCKS INTAKE SUFFICIENTLY. MOST ARE SUSPECTING THE LP EGR CIRCUIT THAT IS PUMPING MOIST AIR BACK INTO THE INTAKE/INTERCOOLER CAUSING CONDENSATION TO ACCUMULATE THEN FREEZE. I NOTIFIED DEALER WHEN THEY HAD THE CAR AND THEY DID NOT INVESTIGATE WATER IN INTERCOOLER AS REQUESTED. I SUSPECT THIS IS HYDROLOCKING THE ENGINE AND THAT SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR IF THIS CONTINUES DURING THE COLD MONTHS. SEVERAL FORUM MEMBERS IN CANADA ARE REPORTING THAT VW OF USA KNOWS ABOUT THIS AND IS WORKING ON A SOLUTION BUT NOBODY HAS SEEN ANYTHING YET. THERE WERE NO REMAINING PIECES OF GLASS LARGER THAN A DIME, AND SMALL SPLINTERS OF GLASS FELL ACROSS THE FRONT SEATS. THE DEALER INSISTED THAT IMPACT WAS THE ONLY POSSIBLE EXPLANATION, BUT THERE ARE NO OBVIOUS IMPACT POINTS. THE CAR WAS NOT PARKED UNDER ANYTHING. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MANUAL TRANSMISSION CARS SINCE 1975, AND I WAS UPSET THAT MY CAR WAS STALLING EITHER JUST STARTING OUT IN FIRST OR IN THE LOWER RPM RANGE OF THE LOWER GEARS WHEN TURNING AND MOVING THROUGH INTERSECTIONS OR TRYING TO GO UPHILL WHEN THE RPMS WERE IN THE LOWER RANGE. IT WOULD BE JUST FOR A SPLIT SECOND AND THEN BE GONE MY ACCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN I WAS PARALLEL PARKING ON A HILL. I WENT TO BACK UP A BIT TO STRAIGHTEN OUT MY CAR AND IT STALLED, ROLLING FORWARD INTO THE CAR PARKED IN FRONT OF ME. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS INJURED. DAMAGE WAS MINOR, BUT WAS SUBMITTED TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY. AT THIS POINT I WAS JUST BLAMING MYSELF FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO ADJUST TO THE DIFFERENCE OF CLUTCHING WITH A DIESEL ENGINE BECAUSE I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO EXPLAIN IT. THEN A HEARD 2 RADIO REPORTS ABOUT THE COMPLAINTS BEING FILED. I CALLED VW OF AMERICA WHO LISTENED TO MY STORY. THEY TOLD ME THAT IN ORDER TO BE COMPENSATED FOR MY ACCIDENT, THAT I WOULD HAVE NEEDED TO HAVE HAD THE CAR TOWED IMMEDIATELY TO A DEALERSHIP AND HAD IT DIAGNOSED. SHE SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE IT TO BE DIAGNOSED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. A WEEK LATER, I WAS COMING TO A STOP FOR A RED LIGHT AND THE RPMS BEGAN TO FLUCTUATE LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL AND THEN IT WOULD COME BACK TO NORMAL RPMS. WHEN I STARTED TO DRIVE IT WAS A LITTLE ROUGH, THEN SMOOTHED OUT. I CALLED VW OF AMERICA WHO RECOMMENDED THAT I TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER. I AM WAITING FOR THEM TO RETURN MY CALL. I HAVE ALSO 3 INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH MY AM RADIO CUTTING OUT--ARE THE PROBLEMS CONNECTED?
2010 JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI; VEHICLE LOST POWER BUT CONTINUED RUNNING. DASH WARNING LIGHTS(GLOW PLUG LAMP FLASHING) WERE ILLUMINATED. DEALER STATED FUEL CONTAMINATION. FUEL TESTS, BY AN ACTUAL FUEL LAB, SHOW FUEL IN THE SYSTEM MET ALL ASTM STANDARDS FOR DIESEL FUEL OILS. PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE MATERIALS WHICH COMPOSE THE FUEL FILTER/ WATER SEPARATOR HOUSING WERE APPARENT HOWEVER THEY WERE ATTRIBUTED TO "WATER" IN THE FUEL WHICH IS IRONIC BEING THAT IT IS A FUEL FILTER/WATER SEPARATOR. THE HPFP ( HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ) WAS MOST PROBABLY THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE ENTIRE FAILURE. VW'S RESOLUTION WAS TO INVOLVE MY INSURANCE AS THE METHOD OF PAYMENT TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM(TANK TO INJECTORS). I CAN NOT HOWEVER USE THE INSURANCE TO COMPLETE THIS CLAIM AS IT WOULD BE FRAUD KNOWING THAT THE ACTUAL PROBLEM IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF VOLKSWAGEN. *TR
