This page combines three types of NHTSA data: recall campaigns (official manufacturer or government actions), owner complaints (unverified consumer reports), and crash test ratings (where available). A vehicle with many complaints is not necessarily less reliable — complaint volume correlates with sales volume and vehicle age. Recalls indicate identified defects, not overall quality. To compare this model year with others, use the year navigation in the sidebar or return to the model overview page.

While slowing down and just about to make a turn into a private residence off of a highway, multiple indicator lights illuminated and audio warning "dinging" occurred for approximately 3 seconds. As I had already been slowly applying the brakes and starting to slightly turn the wheel towards the driveway when those warnings briefly came up, the moment the lights and sounds stopped, vehicle then maintained speed (while still on the brakes) and locked steering position it was at simultaneously. Having no control at that point, it continued until crashing into a wooden fence. Once at a complete stop, cabin lights and "dinging" activated as it acknowledged the impact. And although it was only going about 15 mph, seemingly to only have damage to the front passenger side bumper/headlight area, it would not shift into any gear or turn off. Not to mention that the front passenger side airbag(s), or any of them, deploy- seriously raised even more concerns as the main reason I purchased a Volvo was for their well known status of safety standards. Had this obvious electrical malfunction happened moments before at higher speed/steering straight ahead, it would've resulted in very serious injuries to myself and others while it speed through 2 intersections at a highway ramp just down the hill. Was towed to a local collision repair & auto body shop until Progressive Insurance took it to their damage assessor where it was declared a total loss. I've owned it for almost 3 years and always had weird inconsistent electrical "quirks"- nothing ever of serious concern though. Has spent a total of 4-5 months in the past 3 years at different Volvo dealerships and mechanics but no one could ever explain why different warnings would be displayed randomly for days-weeks, off/on for no apparent diagnostic reason, 12V power socket was the same way... Please investigate the electrical components that directly affect the operational use and control! Extremely common & dangerous issue with these!
After it rains, i've noticed water collecting in both the passenger and driver side footbeds. It started off nominally and I was easily able to use a cloth. I thought it might have been human error, that I left the window cracked open a bit. The most recent incident (this past weekend 5/4/24) there was a significant puddle on the driver's side. After further research, I discovered the culprit is likely an unbonded windshield, and that this is a KNOWN issue for Volvos, but especially for (2010) xc60s. Having an unbonded windshield seems like a significant hazard risk as the structural integrity of the entire windshield is compromised, as well as risk of electrical components getting wet as the water leaks through the car (and the ripple effects of that).
Front windshield completely separated from vehicle driver side top If side window open it flaps open. Very dangerous at freeway speeds. Known issue of faulty primer on window glass for XC60 vehicles.
Front windshield is not sealed properly. Leaks water at top of windshield and onto the steering wheel. This is not a problem with the sunroof.
Seal around the top of the windshield has failed and worn out. You are now able to press on the windshield and have it unseat from the car frame
Airbag fault lamp illuminated. Trouble code U0433 stored in body module (CEM). The problem described is with the closing velocity module, a component of the collision mitigation system. There is a TSB available from Volvo for this code, reference number US25146.1.1. It states a software update must be performed to resolve the error. My complaint is that the airbag system is affected and shows an airbag fault lamp, which prevents passing vehicle inspection in my state. The collision avoidance system can be turned off by the driver. As such, there is no cause for disabling or otherwise negatively affecting the airbag system in the event of a fault. A remedy is not provided free of charge from Volvo, and it should be so as this issue prevents legal operation of the car despite the affected system (collision mitigation) being designed to be turned off by the user.
Windshield seal was defective causing water leakage into the dash.
I attempted to use the temporary spare tire that came with the car, and 1) the lug wrench provided with the car rounded out when trying to remove the lug bolts, 2) the lug bolts were too long and bottom out in the hub before they tighten down the thin steel spare rim to the car. In short, the spare tire is does not work with the lug bolts that come with the car. This poses a risk as owners will reasonable think they have a means to mitigate a flat tire and be caught stranded as even a well maintained, factor-designed spare tire kit is useless.
Windshield seal developed leak. Water go into hvac shorting out system. No defrost, sever visibility and safety issue. Have seen numerous other volvo owners with similar windshield gasket seal leaks. Car is useless as visibility issue persists
The contact owns a 2010 Volvo XC60. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the charging system failure warning message was displayed, and the battery warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The mechanic replaced the battery and alternator; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to Volvo's Technical Service Bulletin: TJ 27910 (Anti-Tamper Device, Communication Lost). The failure mileage was approximately 148,000.
WATER COLLECTS IN THE DRIVER SIDE FOOTWELL AFTER EVERY RAIN. WHILE DRIVING DURING RAINS, WATER LEAKS FROM (1) DRIVER SIDE TOP LEFT CORNER (2) "A" PILLAR AND (3) LOWER LEFT CORNER OF DASHBOARD AT EMERGENCY BRAKE RELEASE. TOOK XC60 TO LOCAL VOLVO DEALER WHERE THE WINDSHIELD WAS PULLED AND RESET. FRONT FLOOR CARPETS WERE PULLED, FAN-DRIED AND REINSTALLED. VOLVO WAIVED THE CHARGE FOR WINDSHIELD REINSTALL, BUT WOULD NOT WAIVE CHARGES FOR CARPET SERVICES. THIS VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM EARLIER, REQUIRING A WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLVO XC60. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THERE WAS LEAKAGE COMING FROM THE WINDSHIELD ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS AN ADHESIVE BONDING FAILURE WITH THE WINDSHIELD. THE CONTACT CONTACTED BILL GRAY VOLVO CARS (2897 WASHINGTON RD, MCMURRAY, PA 15317, (724) 949-1555) AND WAS INFORMED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000.
MY CUSTOMER WAS HEADED NORTHBOUND ON HWY 63, HAD JUST PASSED OVER I-70 WHEN THE CUSTOMER HEARD A POOF AND SMOKE STARTED BELLOWING FROM THE HOOD AND THE TAILPIPE. THEY PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY, BUT BY THEN SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF THE VENTS AS WELL. THEY GOT OUT OF THE CAR, AND CALLED 911 BECAUSE OF SMOKE STARTED TO THICKEN. ABOUT ONE MINUTE LATER, FLAMES STARTED COMING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE RIGHT (PASS) SIDE OF THE CAR AND WITHIN 25-30 SECONDS, FLAMES WERE COMING FROM UP UNDER THE HOOD AS WELL. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT GOT THERE AND PUT OUT THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FROM THERE. THE CAR WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION. IT PASSED INSPECTION AT THE HONDA DEALERSHIP. WE DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED OR WHAT WENT WRONG. WE DID SOME RESEARCH AND THERE WAS A RECALL NUMBER 09V477000; FUEL SYSTEM. THIS RECALL WAS SUPPOSEDLY FIXED BY VOLVO. WE CONTACTED VOLVO AND THEY SAID THAT THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO. HOWEVER, IN CARFAX THERE IS NO RECORD OF THE RECALL OR THAT THE RECALL WAS FIXED. *TR
MY VEHICLES WINDSHIELD LEAKS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DURING AND RECIVEING A CAR WASH ON A TEACK IN NEUTRAL.
THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST VOLVO FOR BOTH THESE PROBLEMS AND I WAS AFFECTED BY BOTH THIS MONTH. 1. WINDSHIELD FOR VOLVO XC60 IS KNOWN FOR A FAILURE OF BONDING ALONG THE TOP EDGE. WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN THE SERVICE GUYS WERE ABLE TO JUST PUSH THE WINDSHIELD UPWARDS AND OUT WITH THEIR BARE HANDS TO SHOW ME THAT THERE IS A HUGE GAP ALONG THE TOP EDGE. THIS HAPPENED TO MY CAR IN THE PAST 1 MONTH AND ENDED IN A $420 REPAIR THAT INVOLVED POPPING THE WHOLE THING OFF AND RESEALING IT. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE WATER DRIPS ONTO THE STEERING WHEEL AND ELECTRONICS, WHICH IS DISTRACTING FOR THE DRIVER, BUT ALSO OBVIOUSLY A HUGE THREAT TO THE CAR'S ELECTRONIC SYSTEM. 2. IN THE SAME MONTH, THE CAR JUST FAILED COMPLETELY, FLASHING ALL SORTS OF DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND DEMANDING TO BE PUT INTO PARK WHEN IT WAS ALREADY IN PARK. IT SAID BRAKES AND SRS AIRBAGS WERE FAILING. THE WHOLE SYSTEM WENT BLACK AND THE FOB WAS STUCK IN THE CONSOLE. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY SAID THE CULPRIT WAS THE RDAR SOFTWARE, WHICH IS CONNECTED TO THE SATELLITE RADIO. IT CAUSES A PARASITIC DRAW THAT KEEPS SEARCHES FOR A SIGNAL EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS OFF. THEY WILL CHARGE EVERYONE HUNDREDS TO UPDATE THE SOFTWARE (NOT INCLUDED IN THE FREE SOFTWARE UPDATE VOLVO BOASTS ABOUT), AND SOMETIMES MORE TO REPLACE THE BATTERY, PLUS LABOR, OR MAYBE QUOTE THOUSANDS TO TRY TO DISABLE THE SATELLITE RADIO COMPLETELY, WHICH IS HARD OR IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE IT'S INTEGRATED INTO THE REST OF THE ELECTRONICS. LUCKILY MINE WAS PARKED WHEN THIS HAPPENED, BUT I DON'T THINK THIS NEEDS EXPLANATION FOR WHY IT'S DANGEROUS IF THE CAR JUST RANDOMLY DRAINS OF BATTERY WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING DUE TO A FAULTY SATELLITE RADIO SYSTEM THAT VOLVO + DEALERSHIPS WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT AND CHARGE CUSTOMERS HUNDREDS OR THOUSANDS EVEN THOUGH THE PROBLEM IS VERY WELL DOCUMENTED. DISGUSTING AND IMMORAL.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLVO XC60. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CONTACT SMELLED FUEL FUMES INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK AND THE FUEL PUMP AND REGULATOR NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 199,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLVO XC60. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE OIL TRAP, AIR SENSOR, AND AIR FILTER NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. VOLVO CARS OF MISSION VIEJO (28730 MARGUERITE PKWY, MISSION VIEJO, CA 92692) WAS CONTACTED VIA PHONE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,165.
THE WINDSHIELD LEAKS WHEN IT RAINS. IT OBSTRUCTS MY VISION WHILE THE RAIN WATER RAN DOWN THE INSIDE OF THE GLASS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHILE DRIVING.
BATTERY DRAIN FROM SATELLITE IN VEHICLE. ALSO, WHEN ENGINE IS OFF, THE RADIO COMES ON UNLESS MANUALLY TURNED OFF. HOWEVER, EVEN WITH EVERYTHING OFF, BATTERY STILL DRAINS. I HAVE BEEN LEFT IN NOW TWO AREAS WITHOUT A RUNNING CAR. I REPLACED THE BATTERY IN APPROXIMATELY AUGUST, 2016 AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO A VOLVO DEALER IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND ALSO REPLACED THE BATTERY A VOLVO REPAIR SHOP IN AUGUST, 2018 IN SOUTHERN OREGON. I AM WORRIED THAT WITH THE CONTINUOUS DRAINING OF THE BATTERY CAUSED BY SOMETHING ENTITLED RDAR THAT I WILL LOSE ALL POWER TO MY VEHICLE WHILE TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY AND IN AREAS AWAY FROM ANY ASSISTANCE FOR REPAIR (I.E., 2 LANE ROADS TO THE OREGON COAST, FREEWAY TRAVEL ON I-5, ETC.). AFTER SOME RESEARCH, I FIND THAT THERE IS A PENDING LAWSUIT FOR THIS ISSUE, FILED IN NEW JERSEY.
