The contact stated while driving with cargo, the cables fractured, and the items in the bed of the truck shifted to the tailgate and cause the tailgate to become inoperable. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 04V129000 (Structure) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who declined to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 174,000 Parts distribution disconnect.
I WAS HAVING THE EXHAUST CHANGED WHEN I WAS NOTIFIED THAT ONE OF THE CROSS MEMBERS FOR THE FRAME HAD RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. IT HAS BEEN REPAIRED, BUT I WAS INFORMED THAT EXCESSIVE RUST IS IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS ON THE REAR OF THE FRAME AND WILL NEED TO BE WATCHED CLOSELY. KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE CROSS MEMBERS SUPPORT THE FUEL TANK AND IF ONE WOULD BREAK, IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD CASSETTE FUEL TANK TO FALL OFF. THE TRUCK HAS 100,500 MILES ON IT, WHICH IS NOT EXCESSIVE FOR THE YEAR. THE TRUCK SPENT MOST OF ITS LIFE IN MICHIGAN, BUT NOW RESIDES IN ILLINOIS. I HAVE READ SEVERAL FORUMS HAVING THE SAME COMPLAINTS FOR THE 99-2007 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES. THERE ARE SEVERAL HOLES PLACED ON THESE CROSS MEMBERS BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT ALLOW MOISTURE IN, WITH NO PLACE FOR THE MOISTURE TO GO ONCE IT IS PLACE. I AM SURE THERE IS ALSO A LACK OF PROPER PAINT APPLICATION AND EVEN POOR STEEL THAT IS LIKELY CAUSING THE ISSUE. JUST AS TOYOTA HAS DONE, CHEVY SHOULD OFFER A RECALL FOR EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. THE TOYOTA TUNDRA RECALL OFFERS A NEW FRAME FOR ANY TUNDRA WITH A RUST HOLE 10MM OR LARGER. WHY ISN'T THE NHTSA INVESTIGATING THIS FURTHER? THIS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND ALSO CONSIDERABLY LOWERS THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. GM AND CHEVY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR DECISIONS WHEN DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING THESE VEHICLES, JUST AS TOYOTA TOOK ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THEIR DECISIONS.
FARM BROKE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND IS CRACKED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THIS TRUCK HAS NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN A COLLISION. THIS WAS DISCOVERED BY A REPAIR SHOPS WHEN I WAS HAVING A FLAT TIRE FIXED.

FRAME BRAKING INTO OVER THE BACK TIRES MAJOR RUSTING HEATH HAZARD TO MY SELF PLUS OTHER'S SAME ISSUE AS TOYOTA RECALLED FRAME ISSUES. *TR
IN OCTOBER 2014 WENT TO HAVE ANNUAL STATE INSPECTION TO BE PERFORMED. WAS REJECTED DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST ON FRAME. AS TRUCK WAS LIFTED THE FRAME WAS BENDING. INSPECTION STATION SAID TRUCK WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. NO RUST IN WHEEL WELLS, TAILGATE, BUMPERS. TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 91,500 MILES DRIVEN. APPEARANCE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. HAVE REPORTED TO GMAC (CASE # 71-1508539581)AND THEY HAVE MADE NO ATTEMPT TO REPLACE FRAME. DO NOT DRIVE IT IN SALT WATER AND DO NOT TRAILER ANY BOATS OR OTHER NEAR SALT WATER. HAVE BEEN WITHOUT VEHICLE FOR OVER A YEAR. WAS TOLD THAT THIS TRUCK IF DRIVEN IS A DANGER TO DRIVE: HAVE REVIEWED YOUR COMPLAINTS FOR THIS VINTAGE VEHICLE AND MANY COMPLAINTANTS WONDER WHY SOMETHING HASN'T BEEN DONE TO REMEDY THIS APPARENT INFERIOR MATERIAL USED IN THESE TRUCKS OVER A NUMBER OF YEARS IN MANUFACTURING. HAVE IN EARLIER REPLACED THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM THAT RESULTED FROM RUST RELATED CORROSION BRAKE LINES RUNNING ALONG THE FRAME.AM WILLING TO SEND COPIES OF THE TRUCK'S OUTER CONDITION CONFIRMING THAT IT HASN'T BEEN ABUSED IN ANY WAY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT LOW MILEAGE, THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRED BLEW OUT. THE TIRE WAS TAKEN TO A SHOP AND REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION THAT MAY AFFECTED THE TIRE. THE MANUFACTURER OF THE TIRE WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE WAS 42,000.
THE SPARE TIRE HOIST CABLE BROKE, AND THE SPARE TIRE DROPPED ONTO THE HIGHWAY. IT BOUNCED AT LEAST 10 FEET IN THE AIR, NARROWLY MISSING CARS DRIVING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. LUCKILY IT ROLLED TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING. I HAD NEVER USED THE SPARE, NOR LOWERED THE HOIST MECHANISM. THIS TIRE WEIGHS ~75 POUNDS AND COULD HAVE EASILY KILLED A PASSING MOTORIST. *JS

VEHICLE BECAME VERY BOUNCY IN THE REAR, WOULD BOUNCE ENOUGH TO NEARLY SPIN OUT WHILE DRIVING. WENT TO CHANGE REAR SHOCKS AND SAW THAT BOTH CROSS MEMBERS OF THE FRAME ARE ROTTED OFF. THIS SUPPORTS THE FRAME AND IS THE ATTACHMENT FOR SHOCK MOUNTS AND GAS TANK. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO THE VEHICLE TO CORRECT THIS FAILURE. VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE OR ROAD WORTHY IN THIS CONDITION. (INCIDENTALLY, EXPERIENCED TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE AND ALL BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED TWO YEARS AGO DUE TO ROTTING, AS WELL AS THE GAS TANK STRAPS. ROCKER PANELS ARE RUSTED OUT, AS WELL AS THE WHEEL WELLS OF THE BED. I BOUGHT THIS USED IN 2004. *TR
I HAD BRAKE LINE FAILURE,DUE TO RUSTED LINES, HAD TO REPLACE ALL LINES!! ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. HAD ROCKER PANELS, AND CAB CORNERS RUST THROUGH, HAD TO REPLACE REAR BUMPER, BECAUSE OF EXTREME RUST THROUGH, HAVE HAD TO HAVE FRAME REPAIR, BECAUSE OF EXTREME RUST. THE RUST IS NOT SLOWING, AND THE TRUCK WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO BE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD, BECAUSE IT WILL BE UN- ROAD WORTHY. WHY WILL GM NOT ADDRESS THIS WIDESPREAD ISSUE? *TR

REAR BRAKE LINE RUSTED OUT. THANK GOD I WAS GOING SLOW AND THERE WAS NOT MUCH TRAFFIC. WHEN FIXING THE BRAKE LINE I NOTICE THE REAR DUST SHIELDS WERE COMPLETELY GONE AND THE FRAME HAD ALOT OF RUST. FAST FORWARD 8-20-12 WHEN WORKING ON THE FRONT BRAKE LINES BECAUSE THEY RUSTED OUT TOO. I HAD THE TRUCK UP ON JACK STANDS. CAME HOME TO FIND THE FRONT END ON THE GROUND. THE FRAME BROKE COMPLETELY INTO, AT THE CROSS MEMBER FOR THE TORSIONBARS. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IS ONE OF THE STRONGEST PARTS OF THE FRAME. WHAT WOULD OF HAPPENED IF I WAS GOING DOWN THE ROAD. *TR *JS
THE SPARE TIRE FELL OFF OF MY 2000 CHEVROLET 1500 PICKUP TRUCK AND ROLLED INTO A SCHOOL BUS. THESE TIRES ARE SECURED UNDERTHE REAR OF THE TRUCK BY THE SAME TYPE OF CABLE THAT WAS INVOLVED IN THE ON GOING TAIL GATE CABLE RECALL. ALL CHEV AND GMC PICKUPS HAVE THESE DEFECTIVE CABLES HOLDING THE SPARES TIRE AND THEY ALL ARE EVENTUALLY GOING TO FAIL . *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALER WAS ONLY WILLING TO REPLACE THE TAILGATE SUPPORT CABLE, BUT THE TAILGATE HINGES RUSTED AND SHOULD BE REPLACED AS WELL. ACCORDING TO THE RECALL, THE HINGES WERE TO BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. BEFORE HE RECEIVED THE RECALL LETTER THE TAILGATE CAME OFF BECAUSE ONLY ONE CABLE HINGE WAS HOLDING THE TAILGATE AND THIS CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE BUMPER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000, AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 137,000.*AK
